Learn Something New About the Ocean
Lauri Buckley from OnlineClasses.org wrote us to mention that they've done a round-up of interesting ocean-focused documentaries that can be found around the web. Some of these have direct relevance to seasteading.
Here are a few I liked:
Big Stuff: Water: This video is a great place to learn more about the mega-ships of the water industry.
How Ephemerisle 2010 Will Bring Us Closer to Seasteading
As you probably know, the long-term goal for Ephemerisle is to be an incremental path towards seasteading, by cutting down the challenges along every dimension, and then advancing year by year. Here are some of the dimensions, and how we are making progress this year:
Francesca Galea Improves Understanding of the Legal Standing of Artificial Islands
Late in 2009, Francesca Galea wrote us to declare the completion of her doctoral thesis entitled Artificial Islands in the Law of the Sea. With her blessing, we posted the PDF of her significant and clarifying inquiries on our Research page, but it is more appropriate that we give her research the highlight it deserves. From the paper:
TSI Argonauts: Benefits for Leading the Way
If your passion for making seasteading happen goes well above and beyond the call of duty, then consider joining the ranks of the Argonauts. Argonauts demonstrate their commitment to the seasteading dream by pledging $1000 a year for ten years. And we have now made it possible to receive the benefits of being an Argonaut for a full 10 years by pledging either $5000 over 2 years, or $10,000 all at once.
Freedom in Brazil
I spent last week in Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to speak at a series of events. I was invited by Anthony Ling, winner of the "Personality" award in last year's design contest, and had a fabulous time.
Pioneering Undersea Life in Legoland?
From the boy-in-a-bubble dept...
Australian scientist and undersea adventurer Lloyd Godson has for the past 10 days lived entirely underwater in a tiny house inside the Legoland Atlantis by Sea Life aquarium in Germany. Armed with a bicycle-powered generator, Lloyd declared on his LegoLand blog:

Seasteading R&D Company Looking For Investors
Hadean is a seasteading R&D company based in Singapore. Our goal is to create technology that will enable floating, inde?nitely self-sustaining sovereign entities on the sea by 2024.
Our belief is that business and not political ideology, will be the driving force that makes affordable seasteading a reality. To that end, our focus until 2015 will be developing and implementing new methods and infrastructure for aquaculture that will enable them to function efficiently without input from the land.
Patri Friedman Appears on Freakonomics Podcast
This past Friday, the third episode of the Freakonomics Podcast hosted by Steven Dubner and Steve Levitt featured our own Patri Friedman. The discussion centered on the question, "What if economists ruled the world?"
Internships at TSI
TSI has a limited number of unpaid* internship openings!
Website Downtime
Last Thursday, our hosting provider had some problems which resulted in seasteading.org being down for some time--more than half a day. But not to worry--we're back and none the worse for wear. We didn't need to go to backups, so none of your discussions should be lost.
As always, we want to know about any problems. Please report any issues to webmaster@seasteading.org!
The Plastiki Sets Sail to Glorify Waste
This past weekend, the Plastiki, a 60-foot catamaran buoyed by 12,500 reused plastic bottles, launched from San Francisco's Pier 31. The brainchild of eco-warrior David de Rothschild and the product of four years of construction, planning, and media and sponsor outreach, Rothschild's crew will take the Plastiki on a three-month tour covering over 7500 miles through the Pacific Ocean.
WindWard Looks Seaward: Incremental Developments in Energy and Community
Early in February, I met with Opalyn Brenger and Walt Patrick of WindWard, founders and caretakers of a sustainability research community in the middle of beautiful Washington State. They brought me to witness the final triumphant hours of an intensive weekend-long gasification workshop taking place at All Power Labs in Berkeley, California, where attendees and mentors were subverting modern diesel engines to the gasification techniques of the 1890s.

And have fun looking at all the seamounts in international waters. Unfortunately, many of them do not have depth available - we will have to intersect with other bathymetric databases. But some do, like Josephine Seamount, just outside Spain's EEZ, which has a depth of 150-170m.

The Seasteading Institute March 2010 Newsletter
A mountain is composed of tiny grains of earth. The ocean is made up of tiny drops of water. Even so, life is but an endless series of little details, actions, speeches, and thoughts. And the consequences whether good or bad of even the least of them are far-reaching.

Countries & Cruise Ships
I was checking up on T-Mobile's website to see what their roaming rates are by country, as I'm doing some international travel this weekend.
I was delighted to see that their list of "countries" you can check coverage on starts with all the countries in the world...and then continues on to list individual cruise ships, sorted by cruise line and ship name!
Viver no Mar (Living in the Sea)
Recently, Portuguese reporter Vitor Hugo Alvarenga contacted us to find out more about The Seasteading Institute, as part of a feature for high-profile news outlet TVI24.pt about the seasteading movement. Entitled "Viver no Mar", the three-piece feature focuses on The Seasteading Institute, on SeaLand, and on the concept of seasteading in general.
