Rainbow Diet: HEREs what you should know about this colourful diet plan – PINKVILLA

Rainbow diet means to have different and colourful foods on your plate that aid in different health aspects. So, Luke Coutinho, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, founder of YouCare, makes you understand what the Rainbow Diet is all about.

When it comes to eating healthy, people are often confused about what should they be eating, how their plate should look like, which vegetables and fruits they should be eating, etc. The simplest way to make sure you are eating well is to look out for a rainbow on your plate. So, Luke Coutinho, Holistic Lifestyle Coach, founder of YouCare, gives you a complete guide on Rainbow Diet.

What is Rainbow Diet?

Making your plate look like a rainbow means, making your plate as colourful as possible like adding foods that are differently coloured, like green, red, purple, yellow, orange, pretty much like a colourful rainbow. Consuming a rainbow of fruits and vegetables ensures that you not only get enough of the different nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals which are necessary for the overall health of the body.

Importance of Colours on Foods?

Ever wondered the reason behind different colours of fruits and vegetables? Every fruit or vegetable colour has a deep meaning behind it. These colours are due to the presence of an array of unique disease-fighting chemicals called 'phytonutrients' and each colour stands for a unique

phytochemical. It is these phytochemicals, which give the fruits and vegetables a unique vibrant colour and numerous health benefits along with it. By eating all the colours of the nutritional rainbow, you will harness the power of these cancer-fighting and immune-boosting foods.

So how to build a rainbow plate and what does each colour signify?

1.Lycopene (red colour):

Lycopene reduces the risk of breast and prostate cancer. The pigment boosts heart, brain, eye, and bone health. Red coloured foods are watermelon, tomatoes, strawberries, red bell pepper, and grapefruit.

2. Beta-carotene (orange colour):

Beta carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A and has anti-cancer properties, reduces inflammation, supports the immune system, and boosts vision. Foods rich in beta-carotene are carrots, apricot, spinach, yellow pumpkin, and sweet potatoes.

3. Vitamin C and flavonoids (yellow colour):

Vitamin C-rich foods are brimming with antioxidants, help inhibit tumour cell growth, detoxify harmful substances, boost your immune system, reduce inflammation, and improve heart health. Vitamin C is generally found in citrus fruits like oranges, papayas, and lemons, kale, strawberries and broccoli.

4. Folate (deep dark green colour)

Folate-rich foods help build healthy cells and genetic material and boosts heart health. They are iron-rich and help maintain healthy hemoglobin levels. They are also rich in chlorophyll, a plant pigment that helps in increasing oxygenation levels of the blood and acts as a blood purifier. Foods like eggs, citrus fruits, asparagus, legumes, leafy greens, Brussel sprouts, and beetroots leaves are rich in folate.

5. Indoles and lutein (light green colour)

Rich in sulphur, Indoles eliminates excess estrogen and carcinogens and support eye health. Foods containing indoles are cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, mustard greens, and broccoli.

6. Anthocyanins (blue-purple colour):

Anthocyanins destroy free radicals, reduce inflammation, and are beneficial for the brain. Anthocyanins are found in foods like eggplant, blueberries, plums, cherries, and grapes.

7. Resveratrol (pink colour):

Resveratrol helps decrease estrogen production, boost heart health and brain health. Foods rich in resveratrol are peanuts, dark chocolate, cranberries, and grapes.

8. Fibre (brown colour):

Fibre again offers a wide range of health benefits. It helps balance sugar levels, reduces blood sugar spikes, regulates bowel movements, lipid control, digestive health, and aids in weight management. Apart from this, it also removes carcinogens. Fresh fruits, dark green vegetables, healthy nuts and seeds, and whole grains are all rich in fibre.

Ways one could add this rainbow to their plates?

Stir fry vegetables or sauted vegetables, salad, chopped vegetables to dals, soups, vegetable sticks with healthy dips, pulao with vegetables like green peas, beetroot, carrots, beans etc. can help you have a proper Rainbow Diet.

What Happens To Your Body When You Eat Grapes | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

As far as healthy snacks go, it doesn't get much better than grapes. They're super convenient to pack and take with youand they taste good, to boot. Best of all, they're about 84% water. Simple, meaning you get an instant dose of hydration from munching on them. Grapes come in literally thousands of different varieties and colors, all of them delicious in their own unique way. But what happens to your body when you eat grapes? Well, a lot of things. While grapes offer a bevy of health benefits, they can also do more harm than good if you go overboard with your snackingwhich, let's be honest, is pretty easy to do with this fruit.

A 1-cup serving of red or green grapes contains 28% of your daily recommended intake for vitamin K, a nutrient that's essential for bone and heart health. Not only that, but they're extremely low in fat, sodium, and cholesterol, and an excellent source of vitamin C. Studies have shown that eating grapes doesn't just support your physical health, but also your cognitive health, too: One 2017 studyfound that when adults took a grape supplement daily, they improved their test scores for attention, memory, and language. That said, grapes are also high in sugar and carbs, and low in protein.

Grapes are incredibly versatileyou can snack on them right off the vine, incorporate them into smoothies, toss them into salads, or even freeze them for a popsicle-like treat. Now, if you're curious about what happens to your body when you eat grapes, read on. And for more healthy tips, be sure to check out our list of The 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.

Grapes pack a whopping 23 grams of sugar per cup. However, certified nutritionist Paul Claybrook, MS, notes that this fruit is relatively low on the glycemic index, meaning they shouldn't cause your blood sugar to spike too much if you eat them in moderation.

"Your blood sugar will increase but not as significantly as something like soda would cause," he explains. "Part of the reason for this is that grapes contain some fiber, which slows down the speed at which your body can absorb nutrients, including sugar. There isn't a whole lot of fiber (just under a gram per cup) but it's enough to keep your blood sugar in a reasonable range as long as you aren't pigging out on them."

Grapes also contain a compound called resveratrol, which research has shown may increase insulin sensitivity, thus having a beneficial effect on your blood sugar levels.

Studies even say that Controlling This Hormone May Help Lower Blood Sugar.

You've heard of antioxidants, right? Those powerful substances that defend your body from free radical damage? Well, grapes are chock-full of them, and they can help protect and repair your cells from oxidative stresswhich is linked to the development of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

"Oxidative stress simply means that there are too many free radicals (waste products) and not enough antioxidants (waste neutralizers) in your body to mop them up," explains Claybrook. "The result is damage to tissues that can lead to disease. Fortunately, grapes contain tons of antioxidants including flavonoids, phenolics, vitamin C, quercetin lutein, beta carotene, and resveratrol."

Research has revealed that grapes contain over 1,600 beneficial plant compounds, and since the highest concentration of antioxidants is in the seeds and the skin, it's better to eat them whole than simply drink grape juice. Additionally, it's also worth noting that red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green ones because they contain anthocyanins, a type of flavanoid that's responsible for their color.

Chronic inflammation can cause a number of long-term symptoms and health issues, including muscle aches and joint pain, weight gain, headaches, fatigue, and gastrointestinal problems. It's also been linked to cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and other serious conditions.

Luckily, according to Claybrook, the diversity of powerful antioxidants found in grapes can help to reduce inflammation in the body. Specifically, resveratrol is known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Multiple studieshave found that taking grape powder extract can increase the levels of anti-inflammatory compounds in your blood.

Here are Instant Ways to Reduce Your Inflammation, According to a Doctor.

"While grapes are very healthy, too much of a good thing can still be a problem," says Claybrook.

If you were to eat, say, 2 cups of grapes, you'd be getting almost 47 grams of sugarthat's almost the equivalent of two candy bars.

"Sugar causes weight gain, so you don't want to eat grapes by the pound," adds Claybrook. "Grapes could also cause gas, bloating, diarrhea, and an upset stomach if you overdo it."

One serving is about 1/2 cup or 16 grapeswhich may seem small, but controlling your portion sizes of this fruit will allow you to reap the benefits without the risks of digestive issues and weight gain.

One cup of grapes contains an impressive 288 milligrams of potassium, which plays a key role in lowering blood pressure. Not only that but studies have shown that red grapes contain compounds that may help to reduce total and "bad" LDL cholesterol.

"The polyphenols in grapes have been shown to lower the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)," adds Claybrook. "They do this of course by eliminating free radicals but also improve the function of the tissues and help avoid LDL cholesterol from being damaged and sticking to blood vessel walls. They also help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, thus reducing blood pressure and keep platelets from sticking together and creating clogs."

Here are 17 Foods That Lower Cholesterol.

Grapes are a stellar source of vitamin C, packing 27% of the RDI in 1 cup. As you may or may not know, vitamin C is an essential nutrient that benefits your immune system, which may explain why test-tube studies have shown that grape skin extract can protect against the flu virus.

In fact, 2013 research that compared the immune-boosting effects of hundreds of foods found that red grapes stood outmainly due to the resveratrol, which works with vitamin D to raise the expression of a specific gene involved in immune function.

Here are 8 Ways to Support a Healthy Immune System, According to Harvard.

I Live in the Mountains, and This $30 Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer Is the Only Thing That Hydrates My Skin – Yahoo Lifestyle

Winky Lux Cream

Courtesy/InStyle

I've been spending the winter in the mountains of New Hampshire, which is wonderful for my mental health and terrible for my skin. While I thought subjecting my skin to Boston's city pollution was bad, it's apparently much more adverse to harsh, sub-zero winds and frequent snowstorms. I'd slather expensive cream on my red, chapped cheeks only to wake up with a sprinkling of acne and an oily complexion. Thankfully, I discovered the newly formulated Winky Lux Dream Gele Moisturizer, and my skin is finally at peace.

If I'm being honest, I was initially skeptical because this cream is only $30. If my $100 celebrity-touted products weren't doing the trick, why would a budget-friendly option? Desperation and curiosity led me to try it anyways. Plus, my New Year's resolution was to clean up my skincare a bit, so I liked that it's vegan, cruelty-free, phthalate-free, sulfate-free, and paraben-free.

Shop now: $30; winkylux.com

When I tried the cream, I was impressed that it not only felt lightweight, but that it also melted in, almost like my parched skin was finally taking a long drink of water. The formula was cooling and gave my irritated skin the same sort of relief aloe vera gives a sunburn which makes sense, because aloe vera is one of the key ingredients. I also liked that the formula contained salicylic acid so I'd avoid the dreaded post-moisturizer breakouts.

I let the cream melt into my skin overnight and assessed the results in the morning. Like any good cream containing hyaluronic acid and glycerin, the moisturizer helped to soften and hydrate my dry, flaky patches overnight. Unlike any other cream I'd tried, though, I woke up with a clearer, brighter complexion than the night before. Not only was I free of acne, but the moisturizer appeared to have this plumping effect (thank you, caffeine) that made me look downright dewy. Honestly, I was a little embarrassed to go into the kitchen looking so glowy when the rest of my household was nursing mild winter-induced wind burns.

The cream's newly enhanced formula also contains resveratrol, an ingredient that helps to protect the skin's natural moisture barriers from environmental aggressors, so now I'm proactive against the elements by blending the cream with my sunscreen for my morning walks. Tip: This also makes for a great primer if you're wearing makeup during the day.

Going forward, I'll be saving myself the trouble of purchasing overly priced creams and sticking to Winky Lux's Dream Gele Moisturizer. Shop the top-rated cream now and glow later.

Sake Is a Beloved Drink in Japanese Culture, but Can the Ingredient Also Help Your Skin? – POPSUGAR

What do twosomes like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, skiing and the Swiss Alps, and sake and skin care have in common? Well, put simply, each pair is better together. The 2000s were defined by The Simple Life, the Alps are known for their awe-worthy slopes, and sake can deliver some surprising benefits to skin that you won't find from many other ingredients. But does it really work?

Let's start from the beginning. It's near impossible to hear the word sake and not think of the chilled cups of rice wine you might order with your omakase. But before you think of adding a bottle to your nighttime routine, it's important to understand exactly what kind of sake is being utilized in skin-care products.

"When we are talking about sake in skin care, it's important to note that it's not actually sake, as in sake wine, so much as it is the nutrient-dense fermented yeast that is used to make sake the actual ingredient name is galactomyces ferment filtrate which is akin to the association between resveratrol (a nutrient-dense extract of grape) and wine," Tiffany Masterson, the founder of Drunk Elephant, told POPSUGAR. "Sake uses a particular type of yeast in the fermentation process (that's the galactomyces ferment filtrate), so in a sense, it is like the 'grape' of the sake process."

Still, there are plenty of benefits of this Japanese skin-care staple. Because the fermentation process increases the production of good-for-your-skin antioxidant compounds, when sake extract is applied topically, it can renew and refresh the skin's barrier, among other things. Dermatologist Corey Hartman, founder and medical director of Skin Wellness Dermatology in Birmingham, AL, noted that sake can even out the skin's texture, gently cleanse, and soothe inflammation caused by eczema and acne.

Additionally, "sake is a natural skin lightener thanks to the kojic acid, which is a potent compound produced during the fermentation process that reduces the amount of melanin your skin produces," Dr. Hartman said. That means, with consistent use, you may notice dark spots fade over time. Due to the vast array of benefits that skin can receive from sake, it's easy to see understand why brands like Drunk Elephant and Cocokind (and more ahead) would include this boozy buzzy ingredient in its products.

Sake-infused products can help to improve the health of all skin, regardless of your main concerns or age, meaning you can raise your glass to this notable ingredient every time your skin is craving it. Cheers.

Style News: Caudalie’s new anti-ageing range, Ying The Label and Risis team up – The Straits Times

Caudalie debuts new anti-ageing range

French skincare brand Caudalie has released a new anti-ageing range of products that comes with Harvard Medical School's stamp of approval.

The improved Resveratrol-Lift line was created from a partnership between Caudalie founder Mathilde Thomas and the school's Dr David Sinclair, an acclaimed biologist who specialises in the science of ageing.

They patented a new combination of ingredients, adding vegan collagen booster to the existing formula of vine resveratrol and hyaluronic acid, which is also patented.

A known anti-ageing antioxidant, resveratrol can be found in grape skin - a tribute to Caudalie's roots, which originated in a vineyard in France. The new recipe is said to be twice as effective as retinol and to help the skin produce five times the amount of natural collagen.

The Resveratrol-Lift range comprises the Instant Firming Serum ($98), Firming Night Cream ($84), Lightweight Firming Cashmere ($82) day cream and Firming Eye Gel-Cream ($79).

All the products have fully recyclable packaging - a first for the brand.

Local brands Ying The Label and RISIS have joined hands for a sustainable capsule of accessories.

Called Re:loop, the collection features upcycled fabric necklaces by Ying, paired with RISIS's signature orchid charms. The gold used for the charms was recycled from unused wastage, according to RISIS chief executive Verene Ng.

The necklaces, priced at $228, come in six fabric designs and four gold finishings for the orchid charm. Shoppers can mix and match the fabric and charms.

The collaboration came about after Ying founder Phuay Li Ying discovered during the circuit breaker that her tailor had plenty of uncut fabricleft over. It spurred her to find creative ways to upcycle the fabrics.

French luxury brand Dior has revamped its signature Rouge Dior lipstick with a refillable case. The lipstick's exterior retains its sleek silver trim and "CD" initials, but you can now pop the lipstick bullet in and out of the case.

A Rouge Dior lipstick, available in 35 shades here, costs $56. Refills (price to be confirmed) will be launched on Aug 15. The house also introduced two new finishes - an extra-matte Velvet with long-lasting comfort and a bright Metallic.

Spanish luxury house Loewe has a new member in its Puzzle bag family: the Nano Puzzle, a rescaled version of the iconic silhouette and the smallest iteration of the handbag yet.

Released in a rainbow of colourways, the Nano Puzzle ($1,990) is made of calfskin and finished with a herringbone-patterned cotton lining and palladium metal fixings. It is also the only Puzzle bag to include a detachable metallic chain.

The geometric Puzzle is the first handbag designed by creative director Jonathan Anderson when he joined the brand in 2013. It quickly became a favourite among fashion insiders and is now a modern icon.

Age-related cognitive decline reversed in mice by fighting inflammation in the brain – ZME Science

As mammals age, inflammation levels increase. Im not talking about painful reactions to wound or infection, but rather a more low-key, grinding, background inflammation that grows increasingly intense the longer we live. This growing inflammation has been associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, frailty, cancer, and just about every chronic health problem we tend to see in old age. This also includes cognitive decline and, at least in this case, scientists believe that it can be reversed through managing inflammation in the brain, as studies on mice have shown.

Researchers at the University of Brighton in the UK found that microglia a specialized population ofmacrophage-like cells in the central nervous system, which act as immune cells that defend the brain and spinal cord from foreign invaders are very vulnerable to changes in the levels of inflammation, particularly to a molecule called prostaglandin E2(PGE2).

When this molecule was in high amounts, the microglia had trouble carrying out their normal cellular processes and related cells didnt generate energy as well as they could.

Levels of PGE2 naturally increase with age in our cells and those of other mammals due to the growing number of senescent cells. These dysfunctional cells cannot divide anymore and their presence causes the release of PGE2, as well as other inflammatory molecules.

But theres a way to reverse this process. Writing in the journal Nature, scientists described how PGE2 exerts its effects on cells by interacting with the EP2 receptor on the macrophages, another important type of white blood cell.

When these white blood cells were treated in the lab with drugs that turned this receptor off, the cells recovered. Moving away from the petri dish, the researchers replicated the experiment on mice.

The researchers genetically modified rodents that lacked the EP2 receptor and simply waited for them to grow old (the average lifespan of a mouse kept in captivity is two years). They then tested the cognitive abilities of these elderly mice by subjecting them to a barrage of tests, including navigating mazes and object location tasks.

Strikingly, the researchers found that the old genetically modified mice could learn and remember things just as well as their young counterparts. The same effects were replicated in old, normal mice that werent genetically modified but which received drugs that turn the EP2 receptor on or off.

Essentially, this series of experiments shows that suppressing the PGE2 receptor may represent an important target for treating and maybe even reversing age-related cognitive disorders. Or at least that seems to be the case in mice. Clinical trials in the future on humans may shed more light.

In the meantime, research has shown that foods such as blueberries, strawberries, and spinach improve cognition in both older mice and people. These foods are rich in fisetin, quercetin, and resveratrol, which are known to flush senescent cells out of the body. One possible mechanism by which they may achieve this is by blocking PGE2 at the cellular level. So until more research can offer more straightforward answers, stock up on that spinach.

Cognitive decline due to ageing can be reversed in mice here’s what the new study means for humans – The Conversation UK

The ageing global population is the greatest challenge faced by 21st-century healthcare systems. Even COVID-19 is, in a sense, a disease of ageing. The risk of death from the virus roughly doubles for every nine years of life, a pattern that is almost identical to a host of other illnesses. But why are old people vulnerable to so many different things?

It turns out that a major hallmark of the ageing process in many mammals is inflammation. By that, I dont mean intense local response we typically associate with an infected wound, but a low grade, grinding, inflammatory background noise that grows louder the longer we live. This inflammaging has been shown to contribute to the development of atherosclerosis (the buildup of fat in arteries), diabetes, high blood pressure , frailty, cancer and cognitive decline.

Now a new study published in Nature reveals that microglia a type of white blood cells found in the brain are extremely vulnerable to changes in the levels of a major inflammatory molecule called prostaglandin E2(PGE2). The team found that exposure to this molecule badly affected the ability of microglia and related cells to generate energy and carry out normal cellular processes.

Fortunately, the researchers found that these effects occurred only because of PGE2s interaction with one specific receptor on the microglia. By disrupting it they were able normalise cellular energy production and reduce brain inflammation. The result was improved cognition in aged mice. This offers hope that the cognitive impairment associated with growing older is a transient state we can potentially fix, rather than the inevitable consequence of ageing of the brain.

Levels of PGE2 increase as mammals age for a variety of reasons one of which is probably the increasing number of cells in different tissues entering a state termed cellular senescence. This means they become dysfunctional and can cause damage to tissue by releasing PGE2 and other inflammatory molecules.

But the researchers also found that macrophages another type of white blood cells related to microglia from people over the age of 65 made significantly more PGE2 than those from young people. Intriguingly, exposing these white blood cells to PGE2 suppressed the ability of their mitochondria the nearest thing a cell has to batteries to function. This meant that the entire pattern of energy generation and cellular behaviour was disrupted.

Although PGE2 exerts its effects on cells through a range of receptors, the team were able to narrow down the effect to interaction with just one type (the EP2 receptor on the macrophages). They showed this by treating white blood cells, grown in the lab, with drugs that either turned this receptor on or off. When the receptor was turned on, cells acted as if they had been exposed to PGE2. But when they were treated with the drugs that turned it off, they recovered. Thats all fine, but it was done in a petri dish. What would happen in an intact body?

The researchers then carried out one of the cleanest experiments it is possible to perform in biology and one of the best reasons for working on mice. They took genetically modified animals in which the EP2 receptor had been removed and allowed them to grow old. They then tested their learning and memory by looking at their ability to navigate mazes (something of a cliche for researchers) and their behaviour in an object location test. This test is a bit like someone secretly entering your house, swapping your ornaments around on the mantelpiece and then sneaking out again. The better the memory, the longer the subject will spend looking suspiciously at the new arrangement, wondering why it has changed.

It turned out that the old genetically modified mice learned and remembered just as well as their young counterparts. These effects could be duplicated in normal old mice by giving them one of the drugs that could turn the EP2 receptor off for one month. So it seems possible that inhibiting the interaction of PGE2 with this particular receptor may represent a new approach to treating late-life cognitive disorders.

There is a long way to go before we are in a position to start using these compounds in humans even though the prostaglandin systems are very similar. But this study has shed light on a fascinating set of observations linking diet and cognition.

It has been known for some years that eating blueberries and other fruit and vegetables, such as strawberries and spinach, improves cognition in rodents and older people. These foods are rich in molecules such as resveratrol, fisetin and in quercetin, which have been shown either to kill or rescue senescent cells.

There is also evidence that they block PGE2 at the cellular level, providing another route by which these compounds may exert their beneficial effects. Until something better comes along, this is one more piece of evidence that a bowl of fruit wont do you any harm. Though its probably wise to go easy on the cream.

The goodness of grapes – The New Times

Grapes are berries and the earliest domesticated fruit crop, which is cultivated for use as a fruit, in juices, jams, jellies, pies, and wines.

They are green, red or blue-black. Some grapes are seedless, while others have seeds, some of which are edible.

Although grapes are not locally grown, they are imported and one can access them in some local supermarkets such as Simba Supermarket in town, New Frulep next to Rwandex.

The benefits

Studies show that only one cup of grapes provides about a quarter of ones daily vitamin C needs, nearly 20 per cent for vitamin K, and at least 10 per cent for copper.

In addition to supporting immunity, vitamin C is needed for DNA repair.

Joseph Uwiragiye, the head of the nutrition department at University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), says vitamin C also significantly boosts the absorption of iron from plant foods.

He says that a higher blood level of vitamin C is tied to increase fat burning, both during exercise and at rest. Vitamin K is required for bone formation, and a shortfall is linked to increased fracture risk.

The copper in grapes, he says, plays a role in energy production, plus the formation of collagen and red blood cells. Grapes also provide smaller amounts of several key nutrients, including B vitamins, potassium, and manganese.

In addition to the vitamins C and A presence which is vital for immunity, Uwiragiye says grapes support the immune system through their natural anti-microbial properties.

A one-cup portion also supplies about two and a half ounces of water, which is important for hydration, circulation and healthy blood flow, and waste elimination.

Grapes contain lutein and zeaxanthin, which have been known to protect the retina and eye lens.

Theyve been shown to increase visual range, lessen discomfort from glare, enhance visual contrast, and reduce the time it takes the eyes to recover from the strain of bright lights.

Grapes also help lower the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts, two common eye disorders.

For people trying to lose some weight due to certain conditions, or just for fitness, Uwiragiye says consuming grapes can help with weight loss or management.

He explains that this is so because grapes are a low-calorie, fat-free food with a low glycaemic index. These vine-growing goodies also contain compounds with antioxidant properties.

One of them, he says, is resveratrol which is thought to trigger certain reactions that may improve energy metabolism.

Emmy Ntamanga, a Kigali-based consultant, says eating grapes can also help rejuvenate the skin. He explains that this is because grapes are filled with vitamin C and antioxidants which revitalise the skin.

In fact, he says, they can even protect ones skin from cancer-causing ultraviolet radiation and free radicals that can, on a lesser scale, cause wrinkles and dark spots.

Also, the added vitamin C is necessary for the skin to form collagen, which helps give the face a youthful firmness.

For a healthy snack, Uwiragiye says grape is the best option as it helps boosts ones energy.

He explains that the complex carbohydrates found in grapes can give one a much-needed energy boost.

Also, when it comes to cardiovascular health, grapes are overachievers. Some compounds in grapes can help regulate blood pressure, reduce inflammation from oxidative stress, improve blood flow, and protect your vascular system.

Nutritionists say that the manganese found in grapes is a health benefit that helps to strengthen the bones.

Manganese is a mineral already occurring in our bodies in small amounts. It contributes to healthy bones (by allowing your body to better absorb calcium and also creating essential enzymes to build bones).

Researchers at the University of Florida in the US have found that, unlike many other alcoholic beverages, red wine does not suppress the immune system. In fact, it may help to boost it.

Many studies have shown that red wine in moderation may have some health benefits, including helping with longevity, lower blood pressure, and preventing coronary heart disease and some cancers.

Could red wine actually be healthy? Thankfully, yes, and enjoying a glass of wine can be part of maintaining ahealthy lifestyle. However, moderation is key and it is also important to realise that not all red wine is the same. Different reds have differentdifferent levels of antioxidants.

Red wine contains naturally occurring compounds called polyphenols, which are found in the skins of berries, specifically grape skins. There are different kinds of polyphenols, including antioxidants likeprocyanidinsandresveratrol, each of which has its own health benefits.

Resveratrol enhances the bodys ability tocreate anti-inflammatory molecules, which may lead to an improvement in the immune system. This antioxidant helpshealthy gut bacteria to flourish by stimulating T-cell production and enhancing the bodys immune response.

The best wines for boosting the immune system are wines high in resveratrol and procyanidins, andlow in residual sugar the natural sugars left behind from the fermentation process.

Dry red wines with high levels of tannins and antioxidants should be your go-to varietals during cold and flu season. Some wines with high tannin levels may have an astringent or slightly bitter taste, so if you get headaches from the tannins, go for a low-tannin red with high levels of resveratrol like Pinot Noir.

Merlot is the most planted of all grapes in France and the fourth most planted grape after Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Shiraz. Its plummy, cassis-like flavours make it one of the more popular drinking wines with a softer, more seductive flavour than Cabernet.

And its good for you as it has high levels of the antioxidant procyanidin. Studies have shown that Merlot has demonstrated positive effects on the immune system.

Malbecis a full-bodied redgrape that grows mostly inArgentina. It is renowned for its plump, dark fruit flavours and smoky finish. The thick-skinned wine grape produces a bold red wine with rich notes of plum and cocoa, and is packed with resveratrol, making it a good choice to boost your immune system.

Pinot Noir is a thin-skinned grape with particularlyhigh levels of resveratrol. This fruity, light-bodied, easy-drinking red has been linked to heart health and may help boost your immune system.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the worlds most widely recognised red wine grape varieties. This highly adaptable grape produces a full-bodied red wine with high tannins, and notes of dark fruit and baking spices.

It is packed with high levels of antioxidantsthat enhance immunity and help to protect cells against free radicals.

Nebbiolo is an Italian red wine from the Piedmont region that contains high levels of polyphenols like procyanidin. This varietal also contains melatonin, which helps to set the bodys circadian rhythm and mayhelp with relaxation.

Also known as Durif,Petite Syrahis a full-bodied wine with rich flavours of blueberry, chocolate, plums, and black pepper, and notably high tannins. Due to its high levels of antioxidants like resveratrol, this varietal has demonstrated cardiovascular and metabolic benefits.

Despite its popularity, Petite Syrah is a relatively rare grape grown mainly in California.

Tannat is a red wine grape historically grown in south-west France. It is a full-bodied, tannin-rich wine jam-packed with antioxidants, making itone of the healthiest red winesout there. It is also one of the most prominent grapes in Uruguay, where it is considered the national grape.

4 Easy Ways To Improve Your Healthspan In 2021 – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE

David Sinclair, author of the book Lifespan, says that if there is one lesson weve learned this past decade, its this: aging is malleable. He has made certain changes in his own life to improve his health and give himself a decent shot at having a long, healthy life.

We all need to be pushing ourselves, physically, especially as we get older and yet, he says, only 10% of people over the age of 65 do. The good news is we dont have to exercise for hours on end. People who run four to five miles a week (for most people, thats an amount of exercise that can be done in less than 30 minutes every other day) reduce their chance of death from a heart attack by 40%, and all-cause mortality by 45%. Thats a massive effect.

He says: Youll know you are doing vigorous activity when it feels challenging. Your breathing should be deep and rapid; you should sweat and be unable to say more than a few words without pausing for breath. This is the hypoxic response, and its great for inducing just enough stress to activate your bodys defenses against aging, without doing permanent harm.

Theres nothing revolutionary about fasting, he says. As far back as Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, doctors have been espousing the benefits of limiting what we eat. This is not the same thing as malnutrition. This is when the systems of our bodies begin to prey upon one another. But allowing our bodies to exist in a state of want is unquestionably good for our health and longevity.

Sinclair cites numerous studies pointing to the health benefits of intermittent fasting. In one such study, participants ate a normal diet most of the time, but five days a month ate a restricted diet. In three months, those who maintained the fasting-mimicking diet lost weight, reduced their body fat, and lowered their blood pressure, too. Participants also had lower levels of a hormone primarily made in the liver, called insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1. Mutations in the IGF-1 and IGF-1 receptor genes are associated with lower rates of death and disease.

Even eating certain plants will make a difference, suggests Sinclair. Health-promoting molecules are produced in abundance by stressed plants. Sinclair explains that we get resveratrol from grapes, aspirin from willow bark and metformin from lilacs. We obtain epigallocatechin gallate from green tea, quercetin from fruits, and allicin from garlic.

This may be evidence of xenohormesis the idea that plants respond to stress by producing chemicals that tell their cells to hunker down and survive.

He believes we should be eating plants and foods raised under less-than-ideal conditions, organic, small farm-raised, or from our own backyard. When plants are stressed, they often add extra color to their stems or leaves.

For example, when a plant or a fruit is exposed to too much light, you may have noticed it produces extra red, blue or purple pigments. These are anthocyanins, and they are produced not only by radiation damage but by drought, adverse temperatures, nutrient restriction, pathogens and wounding. I look for leafy vegetables that are bright, not light green. I dont mind if they have holes eaten in them or are limp.

And if youre wondering which wine grapes have the highest resveratrol content? Sinclair says its pinot noir, because theyre so stress-sensitive.

Cold therapy helps to activate the mitochondria in your brown fat. He writes that his interest in the potential health benefits of cold therapy began in 2008, with a chance meeting at TEDMED with Ray Cronis, former NASA scientist-turned-expert in nutrition and bioenergetics. The two began working together and published a paper together with Andrew Bremmer at the NIH, titled The Metabolic Winter Hypothesis: A cause of the current epidemics of obesity and cardiometabolic disease.

Sinclair takes a colder view of life. He leaves a window slightly open and turns down the thermostat at night, and avoids heavy blankets while he sleeps. At the gym, he plunges into a cold pool up to his neck for at least 20 seconds. The scientist says this leaves him feeling refreshed and energized for the rest of the day.

This is a controversial area for anyone in the scientific world to venture into perhaps more so for an academic specializing in aging. But who wouldnt want to know? According to multiple reports and broadcast material on the subject, he regularly tracks his biomarkers, and takes vitamin D, vitamin K2, and aspirin.

He also takes other longevity-specific substances each morning: resveratrol, NMN, and metformin, a diabetes drug currently being studied for its potential anti-aging effects. Importantly, Sinclair is quick to point out to the media that hes not a medical doctor and that hes not recommending anyone do what he does. This is purely what he does personally, based on what hes learning.

While the natural human inclination is to seek the fountain of youth, theres never a shortage of naysayers. The stakes are particularly high in this area of health, and Sinclair may well be conducting his own real-time personal longevity experiment alongside his lab. However, whatever your viewpoint, there are many strategies that can be adopted without any risk. You can be proactive about improving your lifespan now.

As Dr. Craige Golding confirms, were living in exciting times when it comes to the science of aging. It starts with a better understanding of where you are in your own aging process. Then, you can use the best of science, experts, tests, and information to guide you in making informed choices. Undoubtedly, If you take a proactive approach to your health, and take ownership of it, youll be able to ensure better healthspan.
