Found in red wine, red or purple grapes, some berries,and dark chocolate, resveratrol is a naturally-occurring polyphenol compound that has been touted as a potential remedy for a range of age-related conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.

Said to contribute to the "French paradox"the observation that people living in France tend to eat a lot of cheese, butter, and other fatty foodsyet have a low incidence of heart diseaseresveratrol consumption has been found to mimic a calorie-restricted diet (which studies have shown can play a role in longevity) and decrease chronic inflammation in the body.

Much of the research pointing to the benefits have been laboratory or animal-based studies. So far, research on resveratrol's effectiveness in humans has yielded mixed results. Here's a look at some key study findings:

1) HeartHealth

For a review published in Clinical Nutrition in 2015, researchers analyzed six previously published studies on the effects of resveratrol on blood pressure, and concluded that resveratrol didn'tsignificantly reduce blood pressure. Higher doses of resveratrol (over 150 mg per day), however, werefound to significantly decrease systolic blood pressure (the top number on a blood pressure reading).

Another review, published in the International Journal of Cardiology in 2015, examined the effectiveness of resveratrol on cardiovascular risk factors. After analyzing 10 previously published studies, researchers concluded that the analysis did not suggest any benefit of resveratrol supplementation on heart disease risk factors, including levels oftotal cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, and C-reactive protein (a blood protein that is raised when there is inflammation, including in heart disease).

2) Aging

There's some evidence that resveratrol may not prolong life, according to research on people living in Tuscany who consume a diet rich in resveratrol from food sources like red wine. In astudy published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2014, 783 men and women 65 years or older were followed from 1998 to 2009.

During that time, intake of red wine (as measured by urine levels of resveratrol metabolites), didn't change the likelihood of dying from any cause, the incidence of heart disease or cancer, or markers of inflammation.

3) Cancer

A number of preliminary studies suggest that resveratrol may have anti-cancer effects. In a2016 animalstudy, for instance, resveratrol suppressed ovarian tumor regrowth after chemotherapy. Published in Cancer, the study found that resveratrol inhibited the uptake of glucose by cancer cells (many cancer cells depend on glucose as their energy supply).

Despite these findings, the data from the limited human clinical trials have shown inconsistent outcomes and the American Cancer Society cautions that randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm the cancer-fighting effects of resveratrol. (There is also some concern that resveratrol may influence levels of estrogen and other hormones.)

Trans-resveratrol is a form of resveratrol commonly found in supplements. Proponents often claim that trans-resveratrol is the most stable form of resveratrol.

In addition to food sources, resveratrol is also found in Japanese knotweed (Polypodium cuspidatum), grape seed extract, cissus quadrangularis, and white mulberry (Morus alba).

Pterostilbeneis a compound related to resveratrol.

LIttle is known about the safety of long-term or high dose use of resveratrol.

Since resveratrol may possess estrogen-like properties, some medical experts recommend that people with hormone-sensitive cancers (including cancers of the breast, ovary, or uterus), pregnant women, and children avoid taking resveratrol.

In addition, resveratrol could interact with blood thinners like warfarin, aspirin, and ibuprofen, which may raise your risk of bleeding.

According to one study, high-dose resveratrol supplementation was associated with fever,reduced blood cells, and decreased blood pressure.

There is some concern that high doses ofresveratrol supplements could lead to kidney problems in some people.

Since the compound was first described in 1992, resveratrol has been studied for its much-touted benefits on the brain, heart, and lifespan, but recent research casts doubt on the notion that resveratrol supplementscan help you live longer or lower your risk of heart disease or cancer.

If you're wondering whether a daily glass of red wine or piece of dark chocolate will improve your health, some researchers note that consumption of red wine, dark chocolate, and some berries has been found to decrease inflammation and have heart-healthy benefits, and suggest that other compounds in these foods may contribute to these benefits.

It's impossible, however, to get anywhere near the doses used in studies from food sources. Many of the studies have used a dose of about 100 mg or more of resveratrol, while a 5-ounce glass of red wine only has about 1 mg of resveratrol.

It's important to note that increasing your intake of red wine comes with a trade-off.Consuming too much may raise your risk of high bloodpressure, liver damage, obesity, and some forms of cancer.

To boost your intake without consuming alcohol, try eating foods like grapes, raspberries, plums,blueberries, cranberries, grape tomatoes, and pomegranate (all of which are rich in resveratrol and a range of antioxidants and nutrients).

According to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a five-ounce container of yogurt can also contain up to 25 grams of sugarand most of that sugar is coming from added sweeteners. When youre in the yogurt aisle, follow their advice and if you see sugar or other forms of sugar among the top four ingredients in the Ingredients list, consider choosing a lower sugar yogurt or use plain yogurt with your own addition of fresh fruit or a drizzle of honey.

A quick internet search will reveal thousands of articles claiming that red wine is healthy. And while it does contain antioxidants like resveratrol, its far from a health food that you should consume with abandon. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies on resveratrol are mixed. Some research shows that resveratrol could be linked to a lower risk of inflammation and blood clotting, which can lower your risk of heart disease. But other studies found no benefits from resveratrol in preventing heart disease, they wrote. Plus, red wine contains a lot of sugar and of course, it contains alcohol, which can have extremely toxic effects.

Yes, studies have suggested that one or two drinks a day can benefit your health, but just as many have shown that no amount of alcohol is good for your health and that even one drink a day can increase your risk of certain diseases, such as breast cancer.

Finding foods that are actuallyhealthy can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. But they do exist! The key is to become a discerning ingredients list reader and find brands that are going above and beyond to stick to real, simple ingredients.

Food gives us the nutrients we need to survive, and we know a balanced diet contributes to good health. Beyond this, many people seek out different foods specifically for their health benefits, hoping eating certain things might prevent or treat particular conditions. Here are five options that aren't nearly as beneficial as their reputation suggests.

Its true many foods contain bioactive compounds chemicals that act in the body in ways that might promote good health. These are being studied in the prevention of cancer, heart disease and other conditions.

But the idea of food as medicine, although attractive, is easily oversold in the headlines. Stories tend to be based on studies done in the lab, testing concentrated extracts from foods. The effect seen in real people eating the actual food is going to be different to the effects in a petri dish.

If you do the maths, youll find you actually need to eat enormous amounts of particular foods to get an active dose of the desired element. In some cases, this might endanger your health, rather than protecting it.

These four foods (and one drink) show the common healing claims around the foods we eat dont always stack up.

Cinnamon, which contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde, is claimed to aid weight loss and regulate appetite.

There is evidence cinnamaldehyde can reduce cholesterol in people with diabetes. But this is based on studies of the chemical in large doses not eating the spice itself.

These studies give people between 1 and 6 grams of cinnamaldehyde per day. Cinnamon is about 8% cinnamaldehyde by weight so youd have to eat at least 13 grams of cinnamon, or about half a supermarket jar, per day. Much more than youd add to your morning porridge.

The headlines on the health benefits of red wine are usually because of a chemical in grape skins called resveratrol. Resveratrol is a polyphenol, a family of chemicals with antioxidant properties.

Its been claimed resveratrol protects our cells from damage and reduces the risk of a range of conditions such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimers disease, and heart disease.

There is some limited evidence that resveratrol has benefits in animal models, although studies done in humans have not shown a similar effect.

It varies by wine, but red wine contains about 3 micrograms (about 3 millionths of a gram) of resveratrol per bottle. The studies that have shown a benefit from resveratrol use at least 0.1 grams per day (thats 100,000 micrograms).

To get that much resveratrol, youd have to drink roughly 200 bottles of wine a day. We can probably all agree thats not very healthy.

Blueberries, like red wine, are a source of resveratrol, but at a few micrograms per berry youd have to eat more than 10,000 berries a day to get the active dose.

Blueberries also contain compounds called anthocyanins, which may improve some markers of heart disease. But to get an active dose there youre looking at 150-300 blueberries per day. More reasonable, but still quite a lot of fruit and expensive.

The news that dark chocolate lowers blood pressure is always well-received. Theobromine, a chemical in chocolate has been shown to lower blood pressure in doses of about 1 gram of the active compound, but not at lower doses. Depending on the chocolate, you could be eating 100g of dark chocolate before you reached this dose.

Chocolate is a discretionary food, or junk food. The recommended serve for discretionary foods is no more than 600 kilojoules per day, or 25g of chocolate. Eating 100g of chocolate would be equivalent to more than 2,000kJ.

Excess kilojoule consumption leads to weight gain, and being overweight increases risk of heart disease and stroke. So these risks would likely negate the benefits of eating chocolate to lower your blood pressure.

Turmeric is a favourite. Its good in curries, and recently weve seen hype around the tumeric latte. Stories pop up regularly about its healing power, normally based on curcumin.

Curcumin refers to a group of compounds, called curcuminoids, that might have some health benefits, like reducing inflammation. Inflammation helps us to fight infections and respond to injuries, but too much inflammation is a problem in diseases like arthritis, and might be linked to other conditions like heart disease or stroke.

Human trials on curcumin have been inconclusive, but most use curcumin supplementation in very large doses of 1 to 12 grams per day. Turmeric is about 3% curcumin, so for each gram of tumeric you eat you only get 0.03g of curcumin. This means youd have to eat more than 30g of tumeric to get the minimum active dose of tumeric.

Importantly, curcumin in turmeric is not very bioavailable. This means we only absorb about 25% of what we eat, so you might actually have to eat well over 100g of turmeric, every day, to get a reasonable dose of curcumin. Thats a lot of curry.

We all want food to heal us, but focusing on single foods and eating mounds of them is not the answer. Instead, a balanced and diverse diet can provide foods each with a range of different nutrients and bioactive compounds. Dont get distracted by quick fixes; focus instead on enjoying a variety of foods.

As a part of our series about entrepreneurs who transformed something they did for fun I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Glen Miller, Professor of Organic Chemistry & Chair of the Chemistry Department at the University of New Hampshire. He is also Founder, CTO and Chair of Vera Roasting Company, makers of the first and only coffee infused with resveratrol, the beneficial antioxidant found naturally in red wine. In his academic life, he is an authority in the area of organic chemistry and nanotechnology.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

I was born in a very small town in central New York state called Chittenango, perhaps best known as the birthplace of Lyman Frank Baum, author of the American fairytale The Wizard of Oz. At the age of 9, I somehow contracted rheumatic fever which forced me out of school for the better part of a year, and this experience changed my lifes path. Until then, I was primarily concerned with football and basketball and other pursuits of an energetic and competitive young boy.

Forced to stay home (primarily in bed) for several months left me with nothing to do except read my school books and try to avoid falling behind. During this time, I became an independent learner in math, science, history and English.

When I returned to school, I realized that I was not behind, but well ahead of my peers in these subjects. That experience changed my perspective on learning and allowed me to channel my competitive nature into being the very student I could be.

What was the catalyst from transforming your hobby or something you love into a business? Can you share the story of your ah ha moment with us?

Im an organic chemist and have been for many years. Over this time, Ive studied many interesting organic compounds, including all-natural compounds that exhibit interesting physical and chemical properties. For years, I was keenly aware of resveratrol, the beneficial antioxidant found in red wine that gives red wine its heart healthy reputation. As an organic chemist, I understood at the molecular level how resveratrol was capable of quenching nasty free radicals that can be associated with the early onset of disease. It is indeed a remarkable antioxidant. I also understood that our bodies do not produce resveratrol. So, the only way we can benefit from resveratrol is to make it a regular part of our diet. And by regular, I mean every day. Few foods contain resveratrol at a significant concentration, red wine being the exception. Like most Americans, I do not drink red wine on a daily basis, so I was not deriving the benefits of resveratrol. Resveratrol supplements in pill form are largely ineffective due to a lack of solubility.

These facts were lingering in the back of my mind when, quite literally, while showering one morning it hit me! Coffee could be the perfect vehicle for resveratrol. A little research bolstered the idea: 82% of all US adults drink coffee and the average coffee drinker consumes 3.1 cups per day. Some kitchen research revealed to me that I could, in fact, take a page out of red wines playbook to infuse resveratrol into coffee beans and make resveratrol soluble (and therefore bioavailable) in coffee. That part is proprietary knowledge, but it ultimately led to Vera Roasting Company, a US Patent, and our signature coffee infused with resveratrol.

There are no shortage of good ideas out there, but people seem to struggle in taking a good idea and translating it into an actual business. How did you overcome this challenge?

This is so true. Good ideas are a dime a dozen; its the execution that counts. Since Vera Roasting Company was launched in December 2015, weve had some great luck and done some things by design really well, but weve also made some mistakes, been distracted by the wrong things at times, and missed out on some opportunities. Its been a constant learning curve for me, especially as I had zero training in running a business prior to Veras launch. The key is to keep learning and continuously improve execution.

Since day one, I have brought the expertise of business professionals into the company. This has included folks with experience in areas like creating a business plan, marketing, accounting, etc. Even so, the road to success has still been paved with potholes (and an occasional land mine). Ive had to make some tough decisions along the way, but we find ourselves in a great spot now. Nearly a year ago, I was fortunate to bring on an investor who has great vision, great energy and a wealth of valuable experience and contacts.

We also have a CEO, Tom Polcaro, who understands the unique value that we offer and who is working around the clock to grow the business. With their leadership, Vera Roasting Company has successfully rebranded with new packaging, a new website, new product offerings, new partners and collaborations, and a great buzz. Weve always had the healthiest and best tasting coffee on the market. Now we have a great plan forward to share this beneficial product with as many people as possible.

What advice would you give someone who has a hobby or pastime that they absolutely love but is reluctant to do it for a living?

I think the advice Id give would be a function of their age, experience and situation. I started this business at the age of 50 while in the midst of a successful career in academia. The advice Id give to someone in a similar situation would be a bit different than the advice Id give to a 20-something, straight-out-of-college entrepreneur. But in the end, my message to both would be this: youve got to be passionate about your ideas and your business in order to be successful. Surround yourself with knowledgeable, dedicated, positive people that share your vision and passion, and then go for it.

Its said that the quickest way to take the fun out of doing something is to do it for a living. How do you keep from changing something you love into something you dread? How do you keep it fresh and enjoyable?

Ive had a lot of fun on this journey. There have certainly been some challenging times but my overall experience has been quite favorable and full of rewards. I think the thing that keeps it fresh and interesting for me is that I love to take on new challenges and learn new things. Vera Roasting Company enables me to create and innovate on a regular basis, and to continue learning. Since our launch, Ive learned so many things, like how to create a business plan, how to raise capital, how to market using social media, the nuances associated with branding, etc. Vera Roasting has also allowed me to meet and partner with many smart, passionate people that I would not have met otherwise.

What is it that you enjoy most about running your own business? What are the downsides of running your own business? Can you share what you did to overcome these drawbacks?

I am the Founder, Chair and CTO of Vera Roasting Company, but I am not the CEO. Still, I stay heavily involved in all the companys business and have done so since our launch. One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the opportunity to further innovate and create new products.

Some time after our signature coffee with resveratrol was launched, I developed a Sunshine Blend coffee that is infused with both resveratrol and vitamin D3. Like all our coffees, our Sunshine Blend is super smooth and delicious, but it also delivers 400 IU of vitamin D3 per cup in order to help fight epidemic vitamin D3 deficiencies. A full 40% of all US adults have a vitamin D3 deficiency. I expected that our Sunshine Blend coffee would be popular with customers in Northern states, especially in the winter months when exposure to sunshine is reduced. However, to my great surprise, our Sunshine Blend is popular with customers all over the US, including southern states, and in every season including the summer.

It turns out that sunscreen and make-up on our faces and arms all but shut down natural vitamin D production for millions of Americans, so customers located in all corners of the US and during all seasons enjoy the benefits of our Sunshine Blend. This is the sort of outcome that really fires me up and keeps me motivated to continue to innovate.

Can you share what was the most striking difference between your actual job and how you thought the job would be?

Because I founded Vera Roasting Company while such a business novice, I really had no preconceived notions of what my job at Vera would entail. You could say that I was nave.

Has there ever been a moment when you thought to yourself I cant take it anymore, Im going to get a real job? If so how did you overcome it?

Start-ups can be difficult and there were certainly moments when I wondered if Id done the right thing by investing so much time, energy and effort into Vera Roasting Company. But throughout my life, Ive always been just stubborn enough to refuse the urge to quit. Im passionate about changing peoples lives, one cup of coffee at a time, and I just couldnt quit on my opportunity to do exactly that. During those trying times, I did what Ive always done in similarly trying times. I put my head down, jumped into the ditch and started digging. One shovel at a time.

Before I knew it, some serious headway had been made and things started looking a lot brighter. Im so glad I was stubborn. Vera Roasting Company has come a long way. We are growing into the worlds premier functional coffee company. Ive never been more optimistic about our company and its potential to improve lives, one cup at a time. I can hardly wait to see where we are a year from now, two years from now, five years from now. But for now, its head down and back to work!

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

Well, its not really a mistake but I have a funny story from the time when the company was just getting started. A few days before our official launch in December 2015, a local reporter prepared a story about Vera Roasting Company that ran in a local newspaper, the Portsmouth Herald. The story generated a little bit of local buzz about Vera Roasting and our unique coffee that delivered the same health benefits as red wine. Some orders trickled in over that weekend, as locals read the article.

The following Monday morning, I was wrapping up my semester of teaching organic chemistry at the University of New Hampshire. It was a few days before the final exam, and I was offering an optional review class which was attended by approximately 200 students. Unbeknownst to me, the local newspaper story was picked up by the AP and published in about 300 newspapers around the country, all while I was teaching my organic chemistry review class. I had set up my Vera Roasting email account on my cell phone such that whenever an order was received, I felt a buzz.

As I was reviewing organic chemistry with 200 students, my cell phone began to buzz. Within a matter of minutes, the frequency of buzzes increased dramatically. Students in the review class could not help but notice that my pants were buzzing loudly. Very soon, there were no longer individual buzzes, but instead a steady stream of endless buzzing noises. I set it on a table in front of me. The table was facing my students and they laughed as it danced across the table from the endless stream of buzzing vibrations. My students and I thought that my phone was defective!

I turned it off until my review class ended, after which time I realized that my phone was not, in fact, defective. We had received hundreds of orders during my review class! We would continue to receive hundreds of orders over the next several days. And so, Vera Roasting Company was born.

Who has inspired or continues to inspire you to be a great leader? Why?

I dont consider myself to be a great leader, but I like to lead. Ive always liked to take the reins and Ive never been afraid to do so. But leadership should be a shared endeavor. I like to work with others on a journey where a set of shared goals exists. This creates a true team atmosphere where we all look out for each other and enjoy each others accomplishments as much as our own. On a few occasions, Ive seen or worked in an organization that had a decided lack of leadership. It wasnt enjoyable.

How have you used your success to make the world a better place?

Success at Vera Roasting means that we are favorably impacting the lives of our customers. I derive great satisfaction knowing that our customers are improving their cardiovascular health with our coffee. All of our coffees are infused with this beneficial antioxidant. Our Sunshine Blend is additionally infused with vitamin D3 and is helping those with a vitamin D deficiency.

What are your 5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started and why? (Please share a story or example for each.)

Traditional advertising is all but dead. This would have saved us time and money!

Packaging is every bit as important as the quality of a product. I was slow to figure this out.

Big retail is expensive. Between distributors, listing fees, buy-backs and the like, retail can be prohibitively expensive for a start-up.

Know your customers. Learning as much about your customerswhy they buy, why they dont, their expectations, etc.is critical.

Dont be afraid to re-brand if needed. Most start-ups begin with a product, not a brand. As one adds more products, customers can get confused. The brand needs to hold it all together. If it doesnt, re-brand to get it right.

What person wouldnt want to work doing something they absolutely love. You are an incredible inspiration to a great many people. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger.

There are several potential movements Id love to inspire. I havent given much thought about how one would get such a thing moving, but heres one Ive been thinking about lately:

Id love to see us, as a society, shift away from our pursuit of recognition and instead concern ourselves with the pursuit of excellence. I see so many people at so many levels, from adolescents to young adults to experienced leaders in their respective fields, that work so hard and spend so much time and energy pursuing recognitionwhether it be a pat on the back, an award, a special designation, likes or follows on social media, or some other feather in our cap.

Were so obsessed with recognition that weve forgotten what really mattersexcellence, and in particular, the pursuit of excellence. If we focus on excellence, recognition will come. The pursuit of recognition places the cart ahead of the horse, turns us into shallow human beings, and reinforces some of our least desirable qualities like selfishness, self-centered behavior and greed. The pursuit of excellence, on the other hand, builds self-confidence and reinforces some of our most desirable characteristics like honesty, integrity and respect.

Can you please give us your favorite Life Lesson Quote? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

I still teach organic chemistry to undergraduates at the University of New Hampshire. Many of them wish to pursue careers in chemistry, biochemistry and medicine, to name a few. I am routinely sharing Life Lesson Quotes with these students. Most of these are as relevant to business endeavors as they are to any other pursuit. One of my favorites is

There is a direction correlation between preparation and performance.

So simple, but so important.

Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US with whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them.

Id like to share a meal and discussion with many different people including:

Indra Nooyi. She is, of course, one of the most successful business persons in the world with a wealth of knowledge in multiple industries including the beverage industry. She was trained in chemistry and physics, much like me, before moving into business. And of course, she must have fought her way through male dominated industries. Assuming shed be willing to share some stories, I suspect it would be a great conversation. This aspect of her career is especially interesting to me, not just because I have four daughters, but because Im always interested and intrigued when the underdog prevails. In her case, the underdog not only prevailed, but absolutely kicked a$%&.

Kevin OLeary, a.k.a. Mr. Wonderful. I find his brutally honest, no-nonsense style to be refreshing and I know that he is heavily invested in the wine industry which has some obvious parallels to Vera Roasting Company. I think hed be intrigued by Vera Roasting and Id be intrigued to pick his entrepreneurial brain.

Charles Barkley, a.k.a. the round mound of rebound! I love that Charles Barkley is never afraid to speak his mind, and I find that I agree with his no-nonsense perspective most of the time. Hes very smart, has great instincts and I think wed have a lot to discuss. I also love that he comes from the highly competitive world of professional basketball before moving into entrepreneurial activities.

Studies in rodents have shown that resveratrol, a chemical compound of red wine , has beneficial properties against diabetes, heart diseases and dementia, said the National Institute of Geriatrics (INGER).

Drinking red wine could keep your diabetes, heart diseases and dementia at bay.

The institute explained that the wine has various chemical compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective and antidiabetic effects. In addition, it favors communication between neurons in certain regions of the brain that improve memory and learning.

One of the most relevant findings, he said, has been to verify that resveratrol activates a protein called Sirtuina1, which regulates other proteins that improve cell functioning, which increases insulin sensitivity, a hormone responsible for decreasing high levels of blood glucose .

In addition, it was observed that red wine or resveratrol protein alone applied in mice suffering from Alzheimers disease improved cognitive status and delayed the normal accumulation of proteins in brain regions that participate in memory control and learning.

However, the attempts that have been made to reproduce the benefits obtained by the treatment of resveratrol observed in animals have been contradictory and unclear in humans.

There is still much to elucidate about wine and more when it comes to confirming or clarifying the beneficial effects of resveratrol on human health, said the National Institute of Geriatrics.

I once met a couple who was dining at the restaurant where I was pouring wine. When I finished the welcome and the order, and I had placed a glass of red wine in front of the woman, the man said that she had a trick, and implored me to ask her to show it to me. Turns out, she was in recovery from head trauma as a result of a car accident, and shyly, she said she now has the ability to make the molecular structure of the contents of a glass of wine fall apart.

Normally, Im pretty into this kind of paranormal stuff, but I feigned a sort of ennui, lack of interest and gave a less than enthusiastic response, something like: OK, but, um, why would you want to do that? So she proceeded to assume the position, cupping her hands fully and firmly around the glass and thus commenced her practice of destroying the wine. The man then urged me to smell it. As it put my nose to it, he blurted out: See!?

It totally smelled like wine to me.

Bottles in space:

I started thinking about that strange encounter yesterday after a morning scroll through the interwebs pointed me to a news story in the Nov. 5 edition of Decanter Magazine called, Bordeaux Wine Fired Into Space To Test Ageing.

The author of the piece, Chris Mercer, announced: A Northrop Grumman rocket blasted off from a NASA launchpad in Virginia on 2 November, sending the Bordeaux wines into space among 3,700kg of research and supply cargo that also included a zero-gravity baking oven.

He continues with the quip that (sadly): The wines were not part of the International Space Stations Christmas dinner planning; researchers hope to study how radiation in space affects the ageing process.

The wine a case of unspecified red Bordeaux will spend a year aboard the Cygnus spaceship, as part of a joint study by the University of Bordeauxs ISW Wine Institute and Space Cargo Unlimited. The wine will rest untouched (by hand or mouth) at 18 degrees Celsius, which is just above cellar temp, perhaps so the wine can be in a more dynamic temperature for ageing, more exposure to falling apart. Im again thinking of my lady from the story with that apparent skill. An identical case of red Bordeaux will be held here on Earth in the same conditions as a controlled sample.

Mercer quotes Emmanuel Etcheparre, co-founder of Space Cargo Unlimited speaking to Frances SudOuest newspaper: Ageing wine incorporates some of the essential elements of the terrestrial biological ecosystem, such as yeasts, bacteria, crystals, colloids and polyphenols.

The study will focus on how these elements mainly the tannins and other solids involved in ageing wine will behave at zero gravity and with different forces of radiation at play.

Red planet, red wine:

After reading this article, I looked back at some of Mercers other works and found more on the same subject: Wine in space. Seems he is like the Patrick McGovern of wine and space. McGovern, you might know from some of my writing, is a celebrated biomolecular archeologist and anthropologist at the Penn Museum, often called the Indiana Jones of ancient ales, wines, and extreme beverages, uncovering things like the history of fermented drink and the ingredients of the Midas Feast.

In his Decanter Magazine article Could Red Wine Help Power A Mission To Mars? from July 19, Mercer asks that question, though it is not about powering a rocketship with our favorite juice, though that does sound like a really cool idea. Maybe a good use for all of that excess bulk wine just sitting around Napa, Sonoma and the Central Valley at the moment.

Rather, the study looks to a key compound in red wine as a possible superfood or nutritional support for long journeys into space. The compound in question is resveratrol, which has long been thought to be the healing grace of red wine, blessing human imbibers with everything from healthy skin and hearts to longevity. For this particular study, the focus is the possibility that resveratrol may help astronauts (and perhaps future civilian space travelers) maintain bone and muscle mass while on Mars.

Not so fast, as Mercer again spoils our wildest dreams of a Bordeaux-and-Burgundy party in space: However, its unlikely that astronauts will be loading up their space shuttle with Chteau Anglus or Romane-Conti for a daily toast on the red planet. The amount of red wine needed to get one gram of resveratrol per day would be anywhere from 505 to 2,762 liters of red wine. The participants in the study, again, sadly, will be administered resveratrol in concentrated supplements.

Given the opportunity to live much longer lives, many of us might feel less than thrilled at the prospect. After all, you might think, who would want to live an extra 20 years dealing with arthritis, dementia, or heart problems?

But what if those years could be filled with youthful vigor or at least middle-aged comfort?

The ability to reverse, or slow down, the degenerative processes that come with increased age has been a long-held human aspiration. Indeed, it has provided a consistent focus for decades of scientific research on aging.

But it is only in the last 10 years that the replacement of palliative treatments (which suppress the symptoms of age-related diseases) with genuine anti-degenerative medicines (which prevent and repair) has become more than a pipe dream.

This paradigm shift stems from recent research that shows that just a few biological root causes underpin almost all the diseases of old age. Such a discovery is an opportunity to address a wide range of illnesses simultaneously with treatments that target single biological mechanisms. For the first time, aging has become druggable.

One leading cause of age-related changes, including illness, is known as cell senescence. This is a consequence of evolution that only really comes into play when organisms outlive their normal reproductive age, or are subjected to a very damaging environment. When cells become senescent, they can no longer divide and typically behave in a way that damages the tissue around them.

For many years, much of the gerontological community had considered cell senescence to be a symptom rather than a cause of age-related decline. However, recent groundbreaking research showed that removing senescent cells from mice not only prevents normal aging, but actually reverses many of the symptoms. This proof that senescent cells cause aging finally provides us with the potential to develop a cure.

Follow-up work has revealed that the positive effects of senescent cell removal in mice extend to myocardial infarction (which causes heart attacks), Alzheimers disease, and metabolic dysfunction. The challenge now is to translate these findings to treatments in aging humans.

To that end, major investors have now joined researchers in the search for ways to kill, remove, or rejuvenate senescent cells. And they have made exciting progress.

For example, when combined, dasatanib (a leukaemia drug) and quercetin (a natural product found in vegetables), show improved health and life span in mice. And early results from clinical trials of this combination have demonstrated the first-ever alleviation of physical dysfunction in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive degenerative lung disease with no current effective treatment.

The list of common side-effects associated with dasatanib means it would likely be restricted to only the most seriously ill patients. But the trials give hope for medicinal chemists to develop a more palatable second generation of similar drugs.

An alternative strategy is the rejuvenation of senescent cells. Resveratrol, found in red wine and chocolate, was shown to be able to rejuvenate senescent cells in the lab, restoring their molecular fingerprint and growth to that of normal youthful cells.

Importantly, this work also demonstrated that small synthetic modifications were able to tune the effects achieved again demonstrating that a medicinal chemistry approach to the problem is highly likely to be successful.

Elsewhere, Fisetin, a natural product found in strawberries, apples, and onions, was recently shown to confer both improvements in health and a reduction in the senescent cell load in old mice. It is now also the subject of clinical trials.

Interestingly, Fisetin also interacts with other key aging mechanisms, such as nutrient sensing the biological mechanism that underlies the well-known health and life span-increasing effects of calorie restriction.

It is not yet clear whether this is a new kind of super-therapeutic that simultaneously targets more than one cause of aging, or whether it will reveal a new piece of the jigsaw that allows us to integrate the known paths to morbidity into a coherent whole.

The research conducted so far, just using natural products and existing drugs, has shown unequivocally that small molecules can produce a broad spectrum of anti-degenerative effects.

Drug discovery for aging is moving beyond its infancy, and preventative medicine that will revolutionize 21st-century healthcare is now genuinely possible. Now we need to add synthetic medicinal chemistry to the mix to develop safe and effective drugs that will help us all into a healthier and more active future.

Red wine is primarily a source of the aglycones cis- and trans-resveratrol. Although we have mentioned that red wine and cocoa are two of the best sources of resveratrol, unfortunately a diet of dark chocolate and red wine may be decadent but ultimately very unhealthy if you overdo it. The best way to obtain the benefits of resveratrol is through balance and moderation. I recommend consuming wine in small amounts, about one glass per day or less; according to most research, up to two glasses daily for men and one per day for women hasnt been shown to cause any health concerns. If you do choose to take resveratrol supplements, still aim to consume antioxidants naturally from a healthy diet, including a variety of fresh plant foods.

While a large body of evidence has already suggested that resveratrol has many benefits, many experts feel that before we can promote drinking more wine or taking supplements to all adults, additional research is still needed. Overall theres support for itspositive attributes, but data is still needed to confirm its effectiveness for prevention of actual diseases in humans. Its still not completely known how different people react to resveratrol and if some benefit more than others. For example, people with existing cases of diabetes or metabolic defects may need to take higher doses than mostly healthy adults to get the same effects. Overall, most of the benefits of resveratrol have been shown in animal studies and at high dosages. Harvard School of Public Health points out, The dose of resveratrol administered in experiments is always much higher than youd normally consume in a daily diet. You would need to drink a hundred to a thousand glasses of red wine to equal the doses that improve health in mice. (11)

7 Health Benefits of Resveratrol Supplements

If you've heard that red wine can help lower cholesterol, chances are you've heard of resveratrol the much-hyped plant compound found in red wine.

But beyond being a healthful part of red wine and other foods, resveratrol has health-boosting potential in its own right.

In fact, resveratrol supplements have been linked to many exciting health benefits, including protecting brain function and lowering blood pressure (1, 2, 3, 4).

This article explains what you need to know about resveratrol, including seven of its main potential health benefits.

Resveratrol is a plant compound that acts like an antioxidant. The top food sources include red wine, grapes, some berries and peanuts (5, 6).

This compound tends to be concentrated mostly in the skins and seeds of grapes and berries. These parts of the grape are included in the fermentation of red wine, hence its particularly high concentration of resveratrol (5, 7).

However, much of the research on resveratrol has been done in animals and test tubes using high amounts of the compound (5, 8).

Of the limited research in humans, most has focused on supplemental forms of the compound, in concentrations higher than those you could get through food (5).

Because of its antioxidant properties, resveratrol could be a promising supplement for lowering blood pressure (9).

A 2015 review concluded that high doses may help reduce the pressure exerted on artery walls when the heart beats (3).

That type of pressure is called systolic blood pressure, and appears as the upper number in blood pressure readings.

Systolic blood pressure typically goes up with age, as arteries stiffen. When high, it's a risk factor for heart disease.

Resveratrol may accomplish this blood-pressure-lowering effect by helping to produce more nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to relax (10, 11).

However, the authors of that study say more research is needed before specific recommendations can be made about the best dose of resveratrol to maximize blood pressure benefits.

Several studies in animals have suggested that resveratrol supplements may change blood fats in a healthy way (12, 13).

A 2016 study fed mice a high-protein, high-polyunsaturated fat diet and also gave them resveratrol supplements.

Researchers found the average total cholesterol levels and body weight of the mice decreased, and their levels of "good" HDL cholesterol increased (13).

Resveratrol seems to influence cholesterol levels by reducing the effect of an enzyme that controls cholesterol production (13).

As an antioxidant, it also may decrease the oxidation of "bad" LDL cholesterol. LDL oxidation contributes to plaque buildup in artery walls (9, 14).

In one study, participants were given grape extract that had been boosted with extra resveratrol.

After six months of treatment, their LDL had gone down by 4.5% and their oxidized LDL had gone down by 20% compared to participants who took an unenriched grape extract or a placebo (15).

The compound's ability to extend lifespan in different organisms has become a major area of research (16).

There's evidence that resveratrol activates certain genes that ward off the diseases of aging (17).

It works to achieve this in the same way as calorie restriction, which has shown promise in lengthening lifespans by changing how genes express themselves (18, 19).

However, it's not clear if the compound would have a similar effect in humans.

A review of studies exploring this connection found that resveratrol increased lifespan in 60% of the organisms studied, but the effect was strongest in organisms that were less related to humans, such as worms and fish (20).

Several studies have suggested that drinking red wine can help slow down age-related cognitive decline (21, 22, 23, 24).

This may partly be due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of resveratrol.

It seems to interfere with protein fragments called beta-amyloids, which are crucial to forming the plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (21, 25).

Additionally, the compound may set off a chain of events that protects brain cells from damage (21).

While this research is intriguing, scientists still have questions about how well the human body is able to make use of supplemental resveratrol, which limits its immediate use as a supplement to protect the brain (1, 2).

Resveratrol has been shown to have several benefits for diabetes, at least in animal studies.

These benefits include increasing insulin sensitivity and preventing complications from diabetes (26, 27, 28, 29).

One explanation for how resveratrol works is that it may stop a certain enzyme from turning glucose into sorbitol, a sugar alcohol.

When too much sorbitol builds up in people with diabetes, it can create cell-damaging oxidative stress (30, 31).

Resveratrol may even provide more benefits for people with diabetes than those who don't have it. In one animal study, red wine and resveratrol were actually more effective antioxidants in rats with diabetes than in rats who didn't have it (32).

No major risks have been revealed in studies that have used resveratrol supplements. Healthy people seem to tolerate them well (47).

And there are some cautions, especially regarding how resveratrol could interact with other medications.

Since high doses have been shown to stop blood from clotting in test tubes, it's possible it could increase bleeding or bruising when taken with anti-clotting drugs, such as heparin or warfarin, or some pain relievers (48, 49).

Resveratrol also blocks some enzymes that help clear certain compounds from the body. That means some medications could build up to unsafe levels. These include certain blood pressure medications, anxiety meds and immunosuppressants (50).

If you currently use medications, then you may want to check with a doctor before trying resveratrol.

Lastly, it's widely debated how much resveratrol the body can actually use from supplements and other sources (51).
