Beets and their greens are an underestimated vegetable if I ever saw one. Beetroots are known to improve blood flow to the uterus to help with embryo implantation, explains Becker. Eating a diet rich in beets during IVF treatment is especially helpful. Thats why they should definitely be added to your fertility foods list, even if youre not going through IVF.

Theyre pretty simple to prepare too. All you need to do is treat them like potatoes: Wash and scrub them clean, and then toss them with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Wrap a whole one in tin foil and roast at 400 for about an hour, until tender, or shorten your time by chopping them into small pieces. Then, once theyre cooked, rub the skin off with your thumbs (wearing gloves because, otherwise, your hands will end up pink for hours) and toss with a little red wine vinegar and olive oil for a scrumptious salad. You can also add some sweet potatoes to this salad for an extra boost.

Introduction: Malnutrition is common in haemodialysis patients and closely related to morbidity and mortality. We evaluated the effect of twelve weeks of supplementation with resveratrol and curcumin on recovery of bone and muscle mass and protein oxidation, lipid peroxidation on patients with chronic kidney disease and iron overload undergoing hemodialysis, we performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.Methods: We included a total of 40 patients, were randomly assigned to two groups, 20 to the group with antioxidant supplementation (Resveratrol + Curcumin) (Group A), treated with a daily oral dose of 500 mg of Resveratrol and 500 mg of Curcumin, and 20 to the control group treated with placebo (Group B).Results: Significant differences were found in the body composition of the patients between both groups. There was a significant difference in Body Mass Index (BMI) values (p = 0.002), fat percentage (p = 0.007), muscle mass (p = 0.01) bone mass (p = 0.01), as well as in the score of the subjective global evaluation (p = 0.03). Also differences were found between the basal and final serum levels of Triglycerides (TG) (p = 0.01), VLDL (p = 0.003). A significant decrease in the levels of serum ferritin (2003.69 518.73 vs 1795.65 519.00 ng/mL; p = 0.04). Nor were significant differences observed between the baseline and the final Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) values (70.45 69.21 vs 50.19 32.62, p = 0.24). The same results was obtained for carbonyl values (2.67 0.75 vs 2.50 0.85; p = 0.50).Discussion: The present study is the first assay on patients with chronic kidney disease and iron overload that demonstrates the beneficial effects of combined supplementation with Curcumin and Resveratrol on muscle and bone mass. There was a significant decrease in circulating levels of ferritin, to finding that remarkably novel.

While Adele hasn't spoken publicly about her weight loss, the New York Post claimed that she has lost 50 pounds by following the eating plan (and her name was originally attached to the diet back in 2016 ). A former trainer of the star also recently told The Sun that she believes the changes in Adele's physique come down to " 90 percent diet ."

The Sirtfood Diet has allegedly received love from a number of celebs in addition to the "Someone Like You" singer, including Pippa Middleton and famous athletes like former pro boxer David Haye .

The short version: The Sirtfood Diet is said to be rich in foods that contain a particular nutrient that helps trigger genes in the body connected to fat loss and fat storage (more on all this in a minute). And some people say they love it because there are some pretty delicious foods that have these special nutrients (hi, wine and chocolate), so you don't feel deprived.

But...is the Sirtfood Diet too good to be true? Here's everything you need to know about the oh-so-buzzy-right-now weight-loss method.

The diet comes from a book of the same name. The authorsTK and TKof The Sirtfood Diet advise eating foods rich in sirtuins, a type of plant-based protein that has shown some promise in clinical studies to improve metabolic health. "The eating plan itself is designed to 'turn on' the sirtuin genes (particularly SIRT-1), which are believed to boost metabolism, increase fat burning, fight inflammation, and curb appetite," says Edwina Clark , RD, head of nutrition and wellness for Yummly .

Early studies suggest that calorie restriction and resveratrol (a polyphenol found in foods like grapes, blueberries, and peanuts), activate the SIRT-1 gene, and these two principles underpin the Sirtfood approach to eating.

The diet lasts a total of three weeks and is divided into two phases. During phase one, you limit yourself to three Sirtfood green juices (containing kale, arugula, parsley, celery, green apple, lemon juice, and green tea) and one Sirtfood-rich meal per day, totaling about 1,000 calories each day, says Caroline Apovian, M.D., director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center at the Boston Medical Center.

For the next four days, you drink two Sirtfood green juices and eat two Sirtfood-rich meals, which brings your calorie total to about 1,500 per day.

Phase two, or the maintenance stage, lasts 14 days. During those two weeks, you're supposed to have three Sirtfood-rich meals and one Sirtfood green juice daily.

Once those three weeks are up, there's no set plan to follow. To continue on the Sirtfood path, all you have to do is tweak each of your meals to include as many Sirtfoods as possible. Exercise is also encouraged (30 minutes of activity, five days a week), but getting sweaty isn't the main focus of the weight-loss plan.

What are the potential downsides of the Sirtfood Diet?

The Sirtfood Diet includes many nutritious foods that are beneficial for weight loss , such as celery, kale, green tea, Medjool dates, lean chicken, lean red meat, and parsley, says Apovian. The diet also restricts or eliminates many foods that are known to cause weight gain, such as refined flours, added sugars, and processed foods with little to no nutritional value. And thanks to that ridiculously low calorie intake, followers will likely lose weight provided they stick to the plan, she says.

"Evidence to date suggests that caloric restriction and intermittent fasting can be an effective strategy for weight loss and improving metabolic health," says Clark. "However, this may not be appropriate for everyone," she says.

The long-term sustainability of this plan is questionable. Once you're past the first few weeks, there's no eating strategy to follow other than adding more Sirtfoods to each meal. This makes the diet much more flexible than most, which is a huge perk, but a three-week long stretch of deprivation could easily lead to overeating during phase two, ultimately placing you back at square one.

Even if you're uber-disciplined, this is still a tough diet to follow. "A mere 1,000 calories will leave most people feeling very hungry," says Apovian. And if you're not a fan of green juice, a staple of the first week, that will make you even hungrier, she says. Also, since most of the weight loss in phase one is water weight, it will come right back on once you resume normal eating, she says.

Plus, following any diet that doesn't include a healthy amount of protein, i.e. the first week of the Sirtfood Diet, will result in muscle loss and a slower metabolism, says Apovian. To lose weight and keep it off, building muscle through eating plenty of protein and working out with weights is paramount.

On top of all that, research on SIRT-1 activating foods is still very much in its infancy, so it's unclear whether consuming polyphenol-rich foods has a substantial impact on weight in everyone. "Weight is a multi-faceted concept, involving complex interactions between our unique genetic makeup and our diet, movement patterns, sleep habits, and emotional state," says Clark.

The bottom line: The approved foods in the Sirtfood Diet are low in calories and high in nutrients, which is great for weight loss . However, nutritionally speaking, this particular diet is too restrictive, says Apovian. "Ultimately, eating a diet rich in a variety of healthy foods, including lean protein sources, different fruits and vegetables, and whole grains is a healthier, more sustainable way to lose weight and keep it off," says Apovian.

Resveratrol is the polyphenol everyone has heard of because of the French paradox, hoping that drinking a bit of wine every day may indeed be healthy. Resveratrol does have some antioxidant and heart-protective properties. However, its bioavailability is poor and most of its purported benefits have not been confirmed in humans. Resveratrol is a small polyphenol that came to scientific attention during the 1990s. Since then, it has been hyped by supplement manufacturers and news outlets alike.

This compound has been nicknamed the French Paradox in a bottle since resveratrol is found in red wine that the French like to consume it in not-so-moderate quantities alongside a diet high in saturated fats. Yet, the French have very low rates of heart disease [1].

While the resveratrol in red wine is unlikely to fully account for the paradox, some scientists say it may be a contributing factor [1].

Resveratrol is high in grape skin, as grapes produce resveratrol in defense against toxins and parasites. It is also found in various berries, peanuts, soy, and Itadori tea made from Japanese Knotweed [2].

Limited studies have explored its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and phytoestrogen activity. Resveratrol does hold some potential for improving chronic diseases. Researchers are also exploring its ability to mimic the effects of caloric restriction in animals, which might affect lifespan [3, 1].

Clinical studies suggest that resveratrol is likely safe. However, no long-term studies have been done with humans [1].

Resveratrol also has one major flaw: poor bioavailability. Resveratrol is absorbed into the blood from the gut a bit better than other polyphenols (such as quercetin). But it gets broken down fast, leaving little free resveratrol in the bloodstream. Scientists say that this is one reason why a lot of the findings from animals and cells might not apply to humans [1].

Additionally, resveratrol supplements have not been approved by the FDA for medical use. Supplements generally lack solid clinical research. Regulations set manufacturing standards for them but dont guarantee that theyre safe or effective. Speak with your doctor before supplementing.

Some theories have linked aging and age-related diseases to impaired autophagy. Though these theories are still a topic of research, they have yet to be confirmed or rejected.

Autophagy theories also led to the recent boom in caloric-restriction practices. Caloric restriction is said to promote longevity and healthy aging by activating autophagy [14].

However, caloric restriction is not safe for everyone. It may be especially tricky for older or thin people who struggle to get enough nutrients in their daily diet.

In animal studies, resveratrol confers similar benefits to caloric restriction and increases autophagy induction without the need to reduce daily calorie intake. These effects have not been investigated in humans yet [14].

Glial cells, specifically astrocytes, provide support and protection to neurons and their damage or dysfunction is linked to many brain-related diseases [15].

One of the ways in which astrocytes protect neurons is by removing excess glutamate (a neurotransmitter) from synapses and the extracellular space that surrounds neurons. Excess glutamate in the brain can lead to excitotoxicity and ultimately neuronal damage or even death [15].

In a cellular study, resveratrol increased their glutamate uptake. Theoretically, this is linked to better protection from brain degeneration and stroke. However, we cant draw this conclusion from a cell-based study [15].

In animal studies, resveratrol reduced seizures and protected the hippocampus, the brains main memory hub. It also increases IGF-1 in the hippocampus, which may improve cognition [16, 17].

One research group suggested that resveratrol may protect the brain by acting on the gut-brain axis [18].

According to this unproven theory, resveratrols potential benefits may not even depend on it being absorbed and passing the blood-brain barrier. In mice, resveratrol stimulated gut nerves, which passed the signal on to the hippocampus. Resveratrol was undetectable in the hippocampus, it improved cognition only by activating nerves in the gut [18].

In a study on brain cells, resveratrol increased the activity of the antioxidant gene heme-oxygenase 1, which protects the brain from damage. The effect was enhanced by melatonin [5].

In mice with late-onset Alzheimers disease, long-term resveratrol supplementation reduced cognitive impairment and disease biomarkers. It could also activate AMPK, which maintains energy balance in the brain under challenging conditions [19, 20].

Nonetheless, clinical studies have not yet examined the effects of resveratrol on brain health. Thus, this purported benefit remains unproven.

Limited evidence suggests that red wine, in moderation, supports heart health. Additional, large-scale studies are needed to determine the specific effects of resveratrol, especially in people with blood pressure and heart problems.

In 67 men at high heart disease risk, alcohol-free red wine reduced blood pressure (both diastolic and systolic) after 4 weeks. It increased nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels. Regular red wine (9 oz glass/day) also slightly reduced blood pressure and increase nitric oxide, but less so than dealcoholized wine. A control group that only drank gin didnt see any benefits [21].

One analysis of 19 studies concluded that drinking 1 2 glasses of wine daily (150 300 ml) reduces heart disease risk [22].

Interestingly, based on the first study, the alcohol in red wine may actually reduce the beneficial effect of resveratrol and other polyphenols. This especially holds true for people who already have high blood pressure or those at high risk.

In healthy people, though, moderate intake of red wine may indeed improve heart health. In a study of 80 healthy, young people, a smaller amount of red wine (100 ml/day) over 3 weeks boosted blood vessel health, nitric oxide, and the number of cells that regenerate blood vessels (endothelial progenitor cells). Drinking water, beer, or vodka didnt achieve these effects [23].

In cells, resveratrol increased the enzyme that makes nitric oxide (NO synthase) [24].

According to animal and cellular studies, resveratrol also reduces the formation of plaques in arteries, known as atherosclerosis. It also reduces the clumping of platelets, reduces blood lipids, and lowers inflammatory substances that increase risk of atherosclerosis [25].

In cells, resveratrol increases the expression of the PON1 gene, which reduces inflammation and helps detox pesticides and drugs [26].

Some scientists believe that the gut microbiome can also protect against diseases of the arteries [27].

In one study, resveratrol protected blood vessels in mice without APOE, stopped harmful bacteria in their gut from secreting harmful oxidative substances (like TMAO), and balanced their microbiome. It increased beneficial gut bacteria (such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium), which raised the production of bile acids [27].

According to some, resveratrol may counter lower bile acid production and the weaker ability to eliminate cholesterol in people with heart disease. However, clinical trials are lacking to support such claims [28].

One study suggested that resveratrol helps with glucose metabolism. In 11 healthy but obese men, resveratrol (150 mg/day) increased insulin sensitivity and lowered blood sugar levels after 30 days [29].

However, additional clinical studies are lacking. Therefore, existing evidence does not support the use of resveratrol for lowering blood sugar.

It also raised SIRT1 and PGC-1a levels. SIRT is an enzyme crucial for turning off harmful genes that increase fat deposits, blood sugars, and inflammation in the body, while PGC-1a supports healthy mitochondria [29].

Resveratrol lowered blood sugars in studies on rats with diabetes. It prompts cells to take in more glucose, which reduces insulin resistance. Resveratrol also protects the insulin-secreting beta cells in the pancreas, which helps increase insulin when its low and decrease it when its too high [30].

Scientists have yet to explore resveratrols effects on insulin resistance and diabetes in humans.

No clinical evidence supports the use of resveratrol in people who struggle with obesity. The existing animal research should guide future human studies.

In mice fed a high-fat diet, resveratrol reduced oxidative stress and prevented the death of protective immune cells called Tregs [31].

Resveratrol stopped fat cells from making new fats and triggered their death, in cell-based studies. It accomplishes this by turning off genes that cause weight gain (such as PPAR gamma) while activating genes that enhance energy use and mitochondrial health (SIRT3, UCP1) [32, 33].

Additionally, resveratrol may boost weight loss by blocking several key fat-creating enzymes (called fatty acid synthase, lipoprotein lipase, and hormone-sensitive lipase) [32].

This purported benefit remains unproven.

Stem cells in the connective tissue are presented with several possibilities: to develop into fat cells, bone-building cells, joint, or muscle cells. Resveratrol activates the fat-burning pathway (SIRT1), which blocks genes that increase fat storage (PPAR gamma). This epigenetic shift causes stem cells to develop into bone-building cells, which may boost bone health [34].

According to some, resveratrol may synergize with Vitamin D and vitamin K2 to protect the bones and increase their mineralization [35].

The effects of resveratrol on cancer prevention in humans are unknown.

Scientists are investigating resveratrol for its potential to prevent cancer, especially liver cancer and some other cancer cell types [36, 37, 38].

In mice, resveratrol applied to the skin before UVB exposure prevented skin cancers. Given orally, it was active against esophageal cancer in rats [39, 40].

Since resveratrol is an antioxidant phytoestrogen, some scientists are investigating its effects on breast cancer. In cells, it blocks the enzyme aromatase, which makes estrogen. High activity of this enzyme and high estrogen levels worsens a common type of breast cancer that has receptors for estrogen (receptor-positive or ER+) [41, 42].

In animal studies, resveratrol prevented and reduced the growth of breast cancer. Clinical studies have not yet determined its efficacy and safety in breast cancer patients [41].

Aside from its hormonal effects, scientists are wondering whether resveratrol can regulate another cancer enzyme called topoisomerase II. In cells from a deadly brain tumor (glioblastoma), resveratrol blocked the activity of this cancer enzyme, which should guide further research efforts [43].

Researchers are investigating the effects of resveratrol on liver disease and bile flow. In animals, it prevented and improved Nonalcoholic Fatty liver disease and improved conditions of obstructed bile flow (by blocking MMP-2 and MMP-9). It also prevents liver damage in animals with sepsis, or blood poisoning from serious infections. Clinical trials are needed [44, 45, 8].

According to some unproven theories, resveratrol may increase muscle-building pathways and block processes that degrade proteins (proteolysis). For example, it increased the size of fish and enhanced their muscle growth in one study [46].

In another study, resveratrol supplementation enhanced the exercise training response, upper muscle strength, and aerobic performance in rats [47].

Scientists are questioning if its effects stem from epigenetic changes like activating fat- and sugar-burning sirtuins (SIRT1) and other molecules that heighten energy levels (AMPK and PGC-a). Future studies might give us some answers [47].

In mice, high-dose resveratrol had a good anti-radiation effect. It prevented the decline in bone marrow and white blood cells from radiation, helping to maintain proper immune function. It also increased the antioxidant and detox enzyme SOD without causing adverse effects. These effects remain completely unproven in humans, though [48].

Scientists found that noise increases free radicals, which can cause ear damage and hearing loss. In mice exposed to damaging noise, resveratrol protected against hearing loss by neutralizing free radicals and improving blood flow in the ears [49].

In a different rat study, resveratrol prevented ear damage from the toxic chemotherapy drug cisplatin [50].

Clinical research is needed.

According to one research team, resveratrol may help balance the response to estrogen, which affects reproductive health in both men and women.

In male rats, resveratrol increased testosterone and sperm count without any adverse effects. Scientists think it may activate the HPG hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis that controls sex hormone release from the hypothalamus via the pituitary in the brain [51].

In women, resveratrol may act in a somewhat different way. In one trial of 40 postmenopausal women, resveratrol (1g/day for 12 weeks) didnt affect estrogen or testosterone but increased the protein that binds sex hormones and carries them through the blood (SHBG) by 10%. It also improved estrogen metabolism, which may lower the risk of breast cancer [52].

In animals, it blocks the enzyme that makes estrogen (aromatase) and mildly activates estrogen receptors. Resveratrol binds to estrogen receptors much weaker than estrogen does, which has a balancing effect: it may help increase estrogen-like activity when this female sex hormone is low (as after menopause) or decrease it when its too high. More human studies are needed [53, 54].

In a clinical trial of 20 people with acne, a gel with resveratrol showed positive results over 2 months. It reduced acne severity by almost 70% and improved overall skin health by over 50% with no adverse effects. The team discovered that cosmetic products with resveratrol are stable and dont degrade when kept in the fridge (at 4C/40F) [55].

Resveratrol is being researched for reducing pain and inflammation. In animal studies, resveratrol given directly into the brain reduced the sensitivity of pain. Its pain-relieving effects could be to its ability to block COX-1 and COX-2 inflammatory enzymes, the same targets of commonly used NSAID painkillers [67].

Oral resveratrol also reduced pain and inflammation in mice, but injections had a stronger effect. In another study, resveratrol decreased hard-to-treat neuropathic pain in mice [68, 69].

While its oral bioavailability is still unclear, some people suggest that a way to bypass this is to use resveratrol creams locally, applied directly to painful areas such as joints or the back.

Although resveratrol can penetrate the skin, its unlikely that the concentrations present in most cosmetic products can have any effect [70].

Resveratrol blocked the enzymes that take noradrenaline and serotonin back into brain cells from neurons in rat brains, which increases their concentration in the synapse. By increasing serotonin activity in the brain, resveratrol may boost mood at least theoretically [71].

Resveratrol also blocks MAO (MAO-A and MAO-B), an enzyme that breaks down monoamine neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which is equally important for mood [71].

Shlisel is working to produce wine with higher levels of resveratrol, a plant compound found in red wine that has recently hit the headlines for its strong health benefits. Resveratrol is the most popular of stilbenes, phytochemicals found in berries, grapes, peanuts, and wine.

Natural health food store shelves are lined with resveratrol powder supplements, thanks to research studies linking this compound said to have the most effective antioxidant properties with protecting brain function, slowing the development of cancerous growths, preventing infection, and lowering blood pressure, among other health benefits.

Today, one glass of wine does not comprise enough resveratrol of the daily recommended dose, Shlisel tells NoCamels. One of the goals of my research is to elevate the amount of stilbenes and specifically resveratrol, in grapes, with post-harvest treatment.

Shlisels lab is now developing Superwine, what may be the worlds first officially healthy wine.

And the timing for this innovation couldnt be better. Israels wine scene is garnering admirers around the globe and not only those interested in kosher wines.

Were finally being taken seriously as a wine-growing region. For 30-40 years, the Israeli boutique wine renaissance has been happening and people around the world have gotten familiar with Israeli wine, Jacob Ner David, a winemaker and entrepreneur, tells NoCamels. Israeli wines are now being found on wine menus, and nothing to do with the fact that theyre kosher.

There are new and exciting wine places throughout the world that deserve attention, and certainly Israel is one of these places, Erika Frey, a Boston-based certified sommelier and wine educator, told the Lowell Sun.

Earlier this year, the Israel Export Institute, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Economy and Industry, and the Wines & Grapes Board, launched its first-ever Wines of Israel campaign to educate the US wine trade and the general public about the quality of Israeli wine.

Ner David, who is also CEO of Vinsent, is hoping his startup a digital wine shop and e-commerce exchange will help get Israeli wines to more customers as well.

Innovation in how wine is distributed, how people experience wine, he says of his mission.

In Israel, wine has been distributed more or less the same way since the times of the Roman Empire, with a lot of middle people, brokers, the need to ship it as a physical good. If you look at the global wine industry, a $350 billion industry, it has been virtually untouched by the e-commerce revolution of the past 20+ years, says Ner David.

Launched earlier this year, the Vinsent app (still in pilot mode) sells wines from Italy, France, Spain, the US, and Israel. But it is not just a discounted online wine-seller, Vinsent connects people to the wineries themselves. People want to know where things come from, where they were made. They want a connection, he says.

And people are increasingly learning about Israels winemakers. Earlier this month, VinePair named Israel as one of 2019s top ten wine travel destinations. The article highlighted this countrys winemakers, technology, and its renewed focus on native grapes.

The focus on the grapes and the technology is where scientists Shlisel and his research student Ron Schweitzer are standouts. The pair are on a course to make wine scientifically healthier.

Wine is considered to be very healthy, Shlisel tells NoCamels in a telephone interview. Many research studies show the alcohol and antioxidant contents [are the reasons this is so].

Just as pomegranate, seaweed and garlic all hold superstar superfood status because of their nutrient-rich antioxidants and vitamin properties, now, Shlisels research will enable scientists to develop healthy wine as a superfood.

And it makes sense that in a country known for its cross-disciplinary expertise, superwine wine as a superfood would spark from Israel.

Shlisel and Schweitzers Superwine took part in XLR8, a technology business accelerator venture between the Ministry of Economy and Industry and the Kiryat Shmona municipality. The program helps entrepreneurs who have an early stage venture in developing the project, giving guidance and exposure with investors.

Schweitzer, a student in the Food Science department atTel-Hai College, conducted the initial experiments of exposing grapes to ozone gas in Shlisels laboratory. The research showed an increase in the level of resveratrol in grapes exposed to ozone gas as opposed to grapes not treated after harvest.

The ozone gas puts oxidation pressure on the tissue of the grapes which respond with increased production of stilbenes, says Shlisel.

Their lab results led to a Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Agriculture research grant, as well as a partnership with the Galilee Mountain Winery, an investment by the Industrial Cooperation Authority at the Ministry of Economy and Industry, and a collaboration with the Beit El engineering company which manufactures ozone chambers.

Thanks to the introduction to the world of innovation, the two Israeli scientists are now hoping to prove that their research can produce a healthy red wine. Theyre using strains of grapes used to produce merlot, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon.

The first year of research focused on analyzing the grapes. This year, we decided to make wine from the grapes to see if this ozone treatment affects the wine, Shlisel says.

They found that the post-harvest treatment increased the production of stilbenes by up to five-fold and also boosted health properties of another group of molecules.

And thats not all.

Shlisels research shows that ozone treatment is not just for grapes.

He tells NoCamels that other fruits may be treated with this process so we can elevate the antioxidant levels in them, too.

The near-future goal, however, is wine. I hope that people will soon be able to enjoy one glass of Superwine and get all the health benefits, he says.

Its more fun to drink wine than take vitamin pills.

Resveratrol: Benefits and Uses

Have you heard of the so-called French Paradox? It refers to the fact that despite their high cholesterol and high saturated fat diet, the French do not contract heart disease because of their high red wine intake.1 While this belief most likely stemmed from a marketing campaign perpetuated by the wine industry,2 there may be some truth to this, as red wine contains a potent antioxidant known as resveratrol.

However, drinking red wine is not the only way to get resveratrol, and you should not rely on it as your primary source of this antioxidant as it can pose many negative effects (more on this later). But first, lets touch on what resveratrol is and how it does your body good.

Resveratrol, also known as 3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene, is a naturally occurring compound found in a number of plants. It belongs to stilbenes, a class of polyphenolic compounds, and acts like an antioxidant. Resveratrol is actually designed to help increase the life span of these plants by making them resistant to diseases, injury and various stressors, including excessive UV radiation, drastic climate changes and fungal infections.3

The discovery of resveratrol can be attributed to Japanese scientist Michio Takaoka, who first isolated the compound in 1939. He took it from white hellebore, a poisonous medicinal plant. Many years later, in 1963, another Japanese scientist known only as Nonomura isolated resveratrol from Japanese knotweed, an herb that has been used for many centuries to help treat liver and cardiovascular illnesses.

It was only in 1976 when the presence of resveratrol in grapes became known, and only in 1992 was it discovered to be in wine. More studies regarding the potential benefits of resveratrol are still being conducted.4

Clearly, you can get resveratrol from a number of plant foods, but most people believe the misconception that they can simply drink red wine to reap the benefits of this potent antioxidant. But as mentioned above, this can pose many drastic health effects.

Although some studies claim that resveratrol is highly soluble in alcohol, making it more absorbable in red wine, this should not be reason enough to rely on this as your main source. First of all, alcohol is a neurotoxic that can severely damage your brain and other organs. Plus, it increases your insulin levels.

Wine has also been shown to harbor glyphosate, the active and carcinogenic ingredient in the Roundup herbicide. Hence, I would advise you to get this compound from healthier food sources or to take a resveratrol supplement.

It is said that when you consume resveratrol, you get the protective effects it imparts to plants, too. Muscadine grapes are known to have the highest resveratrol concentration in nature, mainly because of their extra thick skins and numerous seeds these are actually where the compound is mostly concentrated. In fact, one gram of fresh grape skin contains at least 50 to 100 micrograms of resveratrol. Other potent sources of this nutrient include:

The problem with most of these food sources, specifically the grapes and berries, is that theyre particularly high in fructose. Consuming them in excessive amounts may prove to be detrimental, especially if youre one of those who suffer from insulin resistance.

In addition, if you want to get resveratrol from cacao, make sure that you consume organic dark chocolate or raw cacao, and not the milk chocolate varieties that are loaded with sugar. Another potent yet lesser-known source of resveratrol is itadori tea, or Japanese knotweed. This has long been used in China and Japan as a traditional herbal remedy for stroke and heart disease.5

If you arent receiving enough resveratrol from food sources such as these, I recommend taking a high-quality resveratrol supplement. Ideally, look for a whole food complex that makes use of muscadine grape skin and seeds.

As an antioxidant, resveratrol is known for combatting damaging free radicals in your body. However, its benefits go beyond that, as it has been found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties as well, both of which are well established by science. That is why this potent compound can be highly useful for helping to fight and reduce the risk of a variety of chronic illnesses.

One of the standout benefits of this potent antioxidant is its neuroprotective effects, which may help slow or prevent the progression of Alzheimers disease, vascular dementia and stroke. Resveratrol can cross your blood-brain barrier to quell inflammation in your central nervous system. This type of inflammation actually plays an important role in the development of neurodegenerative illnesses.

Resveratrol also shows promise in improving cerebral blood flow, which is responsible for its protective effects against stroke and vascular dementia. To summarize, here are some of the effects that resveratrol can have on your brain (and overall) health:

Another impressive way that resveratrol can boost your well-being is its ability to improve mitochondrial health. According to one study, mice that are on a high-calorie diet exhibited better health and a higher survival rate after taking resveratrol.7

In another research, it was found that improved mitochondrial health through resveratrol helped protect against metabolic disease, diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance. It does this by activating SIRT1 and PGC-1alpha, which are the primary drivers for mitochondrial biogenesis.8

There is a growing number of studies that support resveratrols potential effects on cancer, with evidence dating as far back as 1997. Cancer researchers took great interest in these findings, particularly its ability to make cancerous tumors more vulnerable to conventional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy.9

A 2011 review of dietary agents that have tumor-sensitizing properties (making them more susceptible to chemo drugs) found that resveratrol was a clear candidate owing to its multi-targeting properties. Some cancers that resveratrol had a substantial effect on include:

Resveratrol was also shown to help alleviate some of the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which include depression, fatigue, anorexia, neuropathic pain and sleep disorders, to name a few. The study authors noted that these symptoms occur due to dysregulation of inflammatory pathways in your system, which clearly explains the efficacy of this antioxidant.10

Take note that the some of the studies on resveratrols effects on diseases usually employ high doses of resveratrol higher than most supplements. For example, the largest U.S. clinical trial on resveratrol, which involved 119 Alzheimers patients, made use of doses as high as 1 gram per day this is typically higher than most supplements,11 which are only around 250 to 500 milligrams per dose.

Ideally, consult a physician if you want to take resveratrol for its therapeutic effects, as you may need proper guidance if you want to take higher doses. Nevertheless, even just regular supplementation and getting it from food sources may already offer profound impacts on your well-being.

Resveratrol is generally safe, and according to WebMD,12 there are no severe side effects associated with this supplement, even in high doses. However, please note that resveratrol is recommended for adults ages 18 years old and older. Do not give this supplement to children, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women, without the advice of a health practitioner.

Resveratrol may also interact with medications like blood thinners and NSAIDs, so refrain from taking this supplement if youre using these prescription drugs.13

The benefits of resveratrol can be far-reaching, but take note that taking it will be useless if you do not address your overall diet and lifestyle. Resveratrol (trans-3, 40, 5-trihydroxystilbene) is a polyphenol found in grapes, peanuts, and mulberries. Resveratrol, produced in response to UV irradiation, fungi, rhizobacteria, etc.,177 has been studied in a wide variety of health areas since the French Paradox was suggested, the French population has a low incidence of cardiovascular diseases although they consume a diet rich in saturated fats.178

Resveratrol inhibits COX-2 and NF-B, thus possesses antiinflammatory properties through inhibition of COX and proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1).179182

The antifibrotic properties of resveratrol were demonstrated in an experimental model of CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by downregulating TGF- and NF-B, and preventing HSC activation.181,183,184 Resveratrol reduces the level of cell cycle protein cyclin D1 in HSC and inhibits the production of TNF- by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated Kupffer cells.185 Besides its immunomodulatory properties, resveratrol possesses antioxidant capacity due to its chemical structure, its OH groups and the delocalization of electrons through the molecule should act as scavengers of free radicals.186 Moreover, resveratrol possesses beneficial effects against acetaminophen-induced damage through its antioxidant properties by preventing GSH depletion.187 As an alternative way of protection from oxidative stress, resveratrol stimulates Nrf2, therefore inhibiting oxidative stress by stimulating the antioxidant enzymatic system.188,189 According to this, resveratrol protects from BDL-induced secondary biliary cirrhosis by preserving liver function and blocking oxidative damage and inflammation; moreover, resveratrol inhibits ductular proliferation resulting in an anticholestatic effect.190

In addition, resveratrol is effective to avoid the novo lipogenesis in different models of hepatic steatosis invitro191; it also reduces the expression of the transcription factor important for lipogenesis, SREBP-1c, in a steatosis induced with palmitate192 and inhibits lipid and triacylglycerol accumulation in HepG2 cells induced by high concentrations of glucose.193,194

Regarding HCC, resveratrol inhibited the formation of hepatocyte nodules by decreasing malignant cell proliferation and enabling apoptosis through reducing Bcl2 increasing Bax expression and decreases hepatic cell proliferation.194 Interestingly, a clinical study demonstrated the ability of resveratrol to induce apoptosis of cancerous cells in patients with colorectal cancer and hepatic metastasis.195 Resveratrol has demonstrated to inhibit the proliferation HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner; resveratrol also prevents the cells from entering mitosis and arrests them in the S and G2/M phase.196

In addition, it inhibits the expression of VEGF in HepG2 cells, downregulates NF-B signaling pathways, and overexpresses caveolin-1, which increases apoptosis in a caspase-3 expression and p38 mitogenactivated protein kinase pathway-dependent manner.197199

In summary, resveratrol displays demonstrated antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antisteatotic, and anticancer properties useful in the treatment of various liver disorders.

Resveratrol is a natural chemical compound found in grapes, red wine, and other foods. As a supplement, resveratrol has been promoted as a treatment for many conditions -- including aging itself.

Researchers have long believed that substances in red wine might have health benefits. Drinking red wine in moderation may be associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Beginning in the 1990s, experts began to focus on resveratrol, an antioxidant compound in red wine. Since then, some animal and lab studies have shown that resveratrol has promising antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer effects.

However, resveratrol supplements have not been well studied in people. We don't really know what benefits and risks they might have. We also don't know if resveratrol is necessarily more important than some of the other natural substances in wine.

Nonetheless, resveratrol has become a popular supplement. People use it for many different conditions. Some take resveratrol supplements to try to prevent or treat serious diseases, like cancer or heart disease. Others hope that they will slow the aging process. For now, these uses are unsupported by evidence.

Resveratrol is an unproven treatment and there is no standard dose. Some estimates of doses come from preliminary research studies. Ask your health care provider for advice.

Resveratrol occurs naturally in red wine, red grape skins, grape juice, peanuts, mulberries, and some Chinese herbs.

Some people wonder if they should drink more red wine because of the possible health benefits of resveratrol. However, most experts and organizations like the American Heart Association still suggest limiting alcoholic drinks to one per day for women and two for men. Four ounces of red wine equals one drink. Other forms of alcohol do not have resveratrol.

Given the lack of evidence about their safety, resveratrol supplements are not recommended for children or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Diabetes (4 Types) and Thyroid Health

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 (1). The disease especially has a high prevalence in the Western countries, and it has been linked extensively with heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, kidney failure, and blindness. For this reason, a lot of research has gone into the disease progression and treatment options available for diabetes. In this article Im going to discuss four different types of diabetes, along with some of the natural treatment options available. Then towards the end of this article Ill discuss how each type relates to thyroid health.

Before discussing the different types of diabetes, Id like to answer the question why is there an increased prevalence of diabetes? Although genetics is a factor in the development of the different types of diabetes, the main reason why there has been an increased prevalence is due to poor diet, along with other lifestyle factors. This is especially true with type 2 diabetes, but it is also a factor in the other types of diabetes as well.

Lets go ahead and look at the different types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that involves the immune system attacking the pancreas. Beta cells are destroyed in the pancreas, and these beta cells are responsible for the production of insulin. Insulin is involved in the regulation of blood glucose levels. Consequently, there isnt a way for glucose in the blood to enter the cells without insulin, resulting in high blood sugar. Adolescents typically develop this type, which is why type 1 diabetes once was referred to as juvenile diabetes. However, adults can also develop type 1 diabetes, although many times they actually have type 1.5 diabetes, which Ill discuss later in this article.

Potential Causes of Type 1 Diabetes

Just as is the case with other autoimmune conditions, genetics plays a role in the development of type 1 diabetes. Some children who are born with a particular genotype variation with a family history of the disease have a 1 in 5 chance of developing this condition (2). Interestingly, more than 85 percent of children who have type 1 diabetes dont have a family history (2). Just as is the case with Hashimotos thyroiditis and Graves disease, we can t change the genetics of those with type 1 diabetes, but we can modify diet and lifestyle factors, which can have a huge impact.

In the past I wrote a blog post where I discussed the triad of autoimmunity. This is also known as the 3-legged stool of autoimmunity, and according to this triad, the development of any autoimmune condition requires the following three components: 1) a genetic predisposition, 2) an environmental trigger, and 3) a leaky gut. And while the damage to the beta cells supposedly cant be reversed, in type 1 diabetes the goal still should be to find and remove the environmental triggers and heal the gut. This of course is true will all autoimmune conditions, including Graves disease and Hashimotos.

Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes

The diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is usually based on a persons symptoms and blood tests. Some of the common symptoms patients with type 1 diabetes experience include excessive thirst, hunger, blurry vision, lethargy, and weight loss. These symptoms occur because since insulin isnt available to shuttle glucose into cells, they are left without an immediate source of energy.

Laboratory tests involve testing fasting blood sugar, glycosylated hemoglobin (A1C), and an oral glucose tolerance test. Its also a good idea to test for fasting insulin. These tests will usually be conducted initially. C-peptide is a 31 amino acid peptide that can also provide some valuable information, and it is more reliable than insulin as a measure of endogenous insulin secretion (3). In type 1 diabetes we would expect the C-peptide levels to be low, while someone with type 2 diabetes will usually have normal or high levels of C-peptide.

As is the case with other autoimmune conditions, it is also possible to test for autoantibodies. These include antibodies to insulin (IAA), glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and protein tyrosine phosphatase (IA2). These antibodies can be tested at most labs, including Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics.

Conventional Treatment Options For Type 1 Diabetes

Conventional treatment options usually involve providing dose-dependent amounts of insulin the patient has to take at regular intervals. Even though type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition, conventional medical treatment doesnt do anything to improve the health of the persons immune system.

Natural Treatment Options For Type 1 Diabetes

Although there is no cure for type 1 diabetes, the overall goal should be to improve the health of the persons immune system. This involves removing any environmental triggers and healing the gut. Even though the person with type 1 diabetes might need to take insulin, its important to keep in mind that someone with one autoimmune condition is more likely to develop other autoimmune conditions in the future. Improving the health of the persons immune system will decrease the chances of other autoimmune conditions developing in the future. In addition, it might slow down or prevent further damage to the beta cells of the pancreas, which means that the person wont need to take as high of a dosage of insulin.

Curcumin. This is a potent natural treatment option for type 1 diabetes. This is the compound that gives turmeric its orange-yellow color. One study showed that curcumin helps to reduce the release of proinflammatory cytokines and suppresses T cell activity (T cells aid in the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells) (4). Some patients with type 1 diabetes have also used curcumin supplements help control high blood sugar. Another study I came across showed that both curcumin and resveratrol can enhance the function of the pancreatic beta cells (5).

Gymnema sylvestre. This herb has been shown to cause insulin secretion from the beta cells, and might even help with beta cell regeneration (6) (7). This isnt to suggest that taking gymnema will reverse type 1 diabetes, but taking 500 to 1,000 mg/day might help with insulin secretion.

Type 2 diabetes doesnt involve an autoimmune component, although it does alter the way glucose is used in the body. This condition is characterized by either a lack of insulin, or the bodys inability to use insulin efficiently, the latter which causes a state known as insulin resistance. Either way, the person with type 2 diabetes will have high blood glucose levels. About 90 % of people who have diabetes have type 2 diabetes (8).

Potential Causes

Although genetics can play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes, lifestyle and environment seem to be much greater factors. Obesity, weight gain, smoking, and physical inactivity are all risk factors (9).

Its also worth mentioning that pregnant women can develop gestational diabetes, which is the most common medical complication of pregnancy (10). Dietary changes and exercise usually are recommended initially, although oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin may be given if the blood sugar levels remain high. Gestational diabetes is similar to type 2 diabetes, but usually resolves itself after the woman gives birth. However, women who develop gestational diabetes are often at greater risk for developing diabetes later on.

Diagnosis

Just as is the case with the other types of diabetes, the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes involves analyzing the patients symptoms and ordering specific tests. In the beginning stages the person might not experience any obvious symptoms, and so its commonly found during routine testing. For example, someone might obtain a fasting glucose as part of a routine physical, and upon seeing this value elevated the doctor orders additional tests, such as the hemoglobin A1C and the oral glucose tolerance tests. If the blood sugar levels remain continuously high then the person may experience symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, nausea, and dizziness.

Conventional Treatment Options For Type 2 Diabetes

Depending on the severity of the patients condition, some medical doctors will initially recommend diet and lifestyle changes without giving medication. Speaking of medication, metformin is an anti-hyperglycemic drug, and it usually is the first line of therapy recommended to those who have type 2 diabetes. The main way it helps those with type 2 diabetes is by greatly decreasing glucose production in the liver (11). There is also evidence that metformin can help to restore ovarian function in PCOS, reduce fatty liver, and to lower microvascular and macrovascular complications associated with type 2 diabetes (11). However, there is evidence that long-term use of metformin can cause a vitamin B12 deficiency and anemia (12).

In some severe cases of type 2 diabetes the person may need to take insulin. But usually this is a last resort, and many people do fine taking metformin. Of course the overall goal should be to improve the health of the individual so that they hopefully wont need to take metformin or insulin, at least not for a prolonged period of time.

Natural Treatment Options For Type 2 Diabetes

Eating well and exercising regularly can help with many different health conditions, and without question this includes type 2 diabetes. With regards to diet, eating a standard Paleo or autoimmune Paleo diet can help, although some healthcare professionals recommend a ketogenic diet for type 2 diabetes. This involves a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, and the body converts the fat into energy instead of the carbohydrates.

Ketosis vs. Ketoacidosis

When talking about a ketogenic diet, some people get concerned about diabetic ketoacidosis. This is a serious complication of diabetes, and it occurs when there are very high levels of ketones in the body. This is more common in those people with type 1 diabetes, although it can also affect those with type 2 diabetes who dont properly manage their health. Ketoacidosis happens when your body is unable to produce enough insulin, and some of the symptoms include frequent urination, excessive thirst, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, weakness or fatigue, and/or shortness of breath (13). In addition, the person will usually have high blood sugar levels and high ketone levels in the urine.

How does this differ from ketosis? Ketosis is considered to be a mild form of ketoacidosis. When someone is eating a lower amount of carbohydrates and is eating a good amount of healthy fats (i.e. avocados, coconut oil, fatty fish) their body will create ketones. With the ketogenic diet the body is essentially using fat for energy instead of glucose.

Berberine. I mentioned how metformin is the most common conventional medical treatment for type 2 diabetes. For those who are looking for a natural option, berberine is something to consider taking. Berberine is an isoquinoline derivative alkaloid isolated from the herb Rhizoma Coptidis, and it has anti-hyperglycemic properties (14). Not only is berberine a potent oral hypoglycemic agent, but it also has beneficial effects on lipid metabolism (15). In other words, berberine not only can help to lower fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1C levels, but can also help lower total cholesterol and LDL.

Chromium. A few studies have shown that chromium can benefit those with type 2 diabetes by helping with glycemic control and increasing insulin sensitivity (16) (17) (18).

Magnesium. Intracellular magnesium plays a key role in regulating insulin action, and oral magnesium supplementation can have beneficial effects on blood glucose levels (19) (20).

Fish oils. Fish oil supplementation is a natural treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes. One study has shown that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil can help improve insulin sensitivity (21).

Cinnamon. Research has demonstrated that patients taking oral cinnamon daily reduced their blood glucose and triglyceride levels (22). As for conventional treatment, patients are often started off with metformin, which increases insulin sensitivity.

Exercise. While eating well and taking nutritional supplements can decrease insulin resistance associated with type 2 diabetes, studies also show that exercise can help to increase insulin sensitivity (23) (24).

Type 1.5 diabetes, also known as latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA), has characteristics of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It is similar to type 2 diabetes in that 1) it is diagnosed during adulthood, and 2) has a slow onset. However, it is similar to type 1 diabetes in that the person has autoantibodies that damage the beta cells of the pancreas, and as a result, insulin therapy will eventually be required. Type 1.5 diabetes accounts for 2%-12% of all cases of diabetes (25).

What frequently happens is that someone is mistakenly diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes, and as a result may be put on an oral hypoglycemic agent such as metformin. But while this can greatly help someone with type 2 diabetes, type 1.5 involves destruction to the beta cells of the pancreas, and so eventually the person will become insulin dependent.

Potential Causes

Type 1.5 diabetes is often a result of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

Diagnosis

In addition to screening the person for blood sugar imbalances (i.e. fasting glucose, hemoglobin A1C), autoantibody tests can be ordered. This includes antibodies to insulin, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and protein tyrosine phosphatase . The most common autoantibody present is GAD, and this usually results in a slower destruction of the beta cells than other types of antibodies.

LADA has also been sub-classified as type I and II. Patients with higher GAD antibody (GADA) levels are classified as LADA 1, and are more similar to type 1 diabetics, while patients with lower levels of GADA are classified as LAD2, and are more similar to type 2 diabetics (26).

C-peptide might also play a role in the early detection of those with type 1.5 diabetes. I mentioned C-peptide earlier, and discussed how it is usually low in type 1 diabetics, while in those with type 2 diabetes it is usually high or normal. It seems that those with type 1.5 diabetes have normal or decreased C-peptide levels, and so if someone has elevated levels of C-peptide this would rule out type 1.5 diabetes (27).

Conventional Treatment Options For Type 1.5 Diabetes

The treatment of patients with type 1.5 diabetes can be complex. Insulin therapy is typically used to help delay the onset of islet cell failure. Sometimes oral hypoglycemic agents (i.e. metformin) will also be administered. Just as is the case with type 1 diabetes, nothing is done to improve the health of the immune system from a conventional medical standpoint.

Natural Treatment Options For Type 1.5 Diabetes

As for natural treatment options, agents that can lower blood glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity can be taken. I mentioned some of these earlier, including berberine, chromium, magnesium, and alpha lipoic acid. However, just as is the case with type 1 diabetes, with type 1.5 diabetes the autoimmune component also needs to be addressed. In other words, the environmental triggers need to be detected and removed, and the leaky gut needs to be healed.

Some researchers label Alzheimers disease as being a neuroendocrine disease, and the reason for this is because of the shared molecular and cellular features among type 1 and type 2 diabetes associated with memory deficits and cognitive decline in the elderly (28). As a result, many refer to Alzheimers as being type 3 diabetes.

Because glucose is the primary fuel for the brain, if someone has problems with the uptake and utilization of glucose, then this can essentially cause the brain to starve. This in turn can cause oxidative stress, impairments in homeostasis, and increased cell death (29). The inhibition of insulin/ insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling mediates Alzheimers disease neurodegeneration (29). In other words, chronic deficits in insulin can lead to the development of Alzheimers disease, which has characteristics of insulin deficiency that is associated with type 1 diabetes, as well as insulin resistance that is more characteristic of type 2 diabetes. Its also worth mentioning that amyloid beta protein deposits on the pancreas in patients with type 2 diabetes are similar to the protein deposits that occur in the brain in type 3 diabetes (30).

Causes

As mentioned previously, issues with insulin and IGF are contributors to type 3 diabetes progression. Although Alzheimers disease has characteristics of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, the research shows that people who have type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for developing Alzheimers disease (30). In fact, those with type 2 diabetes have almost twice the risk of developing Alzheimers when compared to those who only have insulin resistance.

Conventional Treatment Options For Type 3 Diabetes

Although most medical doctors dont recognize Alzheimers disease itself as being a type of diabetes, keep in mind that many of these people will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As a result, some people with Alzheimers will be given dietary and lifestyle advice, along with medications to lower blood glucose such as metformin. However, drugs are also commonly given to treat the cognitive symptoms, such as memory loss. These drugs include cholinesterase inhibitors (Aricept, Exelon, Razadyne) and memantine (Namenda).

Natural Treatment Options For Type 3 Diabetes

If Alzheimers disease is indeed a form of diabetes, then it makes sense to do what is necessary to lower and stabilize blood sugar levels. As I mentioned earlier in this article, this should be addressed through dietary and lifestyle factors, although nutritional supplements can also be of benefit. Here are a few nutrients/herbs that have been shown in the research to benefit those with Alzheimers disease:

Gingko. A few different studies show that Ginkgo biloba has neuroprotective properties, and might play a role in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimers disease (31) (32).

Bacopa. A few studies show that Bacopa monnieri can enhance cognition and has neuroprotective effects against Alzheimers disease (33) (34).

Curcumin. Curcumin has many different health benefits, and this includes helping people with Alzheimers by inhibiting the formation and promoting the disaggregation of amyloid-B plaques (35) (36).

Resveratrol. Like turmeric, resveratrol has many different health benefits, and it also seems to have neuroprotective benefits in animal models of Alzheimers disease (37) (38).

Green tea. Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG), is the main and most significantly bioactive polyphenol found in solid green tea extract, and there are a few studies demonstrating the beneficial effects of EGCG in the treatment of Alzheimers disease (39) (40).

Vitamin D. Human studies strongly support a correlation between low levels of vitamin D and cognitive impairment or dementia, and it might play a role in preventing and even stopping neurogeneration in those with Alzheimers disease (41) (42).

Fish oils. Patients with Alzheimers have been shown to have lower docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels, and supplementation with DHA might help to prevent or delay the onset of cognitive decline associated with Alzheimers disease (43) (44).

How Do These Diabetic Conditions Relate To Thyroid Health?

Type 1 Diabetes. Those with one autoimmune condition have a greater risk of developing another autoimmune condition in the future. And there seems to be a higher prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity in those with type 1 diabetes. One cross-sectional study confirmed that there is an association between thyroid autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes (45). Out of 58 patients, 18 had hypothyroidism, with only one patient experiencing transient hyperthyroidism. Another study involving 1,304 patients showed that the incidence of autoimmune thyroid disease is high (46). Another study involving children and adolescents showed a high prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (47).

Type 1.5 Diabetes. Since type 1.5 diabetes also has an autoimmune component, it shouldnt be surprising that the research shows an increase prevalence of thyroid autoimmunity with this condition. One study investigated the relationship between type 1.5 diabetes and thyroid autoimmunity, and it found that there is a higher risk of thyroid autoimmunity, especially for those with higher levels of GAD antibodies (48). Another study revealed higher levels of both thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies in those with type 1.5 diabetes (49). I wasnt able to find any evidence that showed an increase in Graves disease antibodies in those with type 1.5 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes. Although type 2 diabetes isnt an autoimmune condition, there still seems to be a relationship between this type of diabetes and thyroid conditions. Some suggest that having a hypothyroid or hyperthyroid condition can lead to type 2 diabetes due to impaired glucose utilization and disposal in muscles, the overproduction of glucose output in the liver cells, and enhanced absorption of splanchnic glucose, which in turn contribute to insulin resistance (50). Another study looked at the association of thyroid function with the risk of type 2 diabetes, and the study showed that higher TSH levels were associated with a higher diabetes risk, even when it was within the lab reference range (51). In other words, if the TSH is within the lab reference range, but outside of the optimal range, then this might lead to an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This doesnt mean that most people with a thyroid hormone imbalance will develop type 2 diabetes, but only that they will be more susceptible to developing this condition. The good news is that improving diet and lifestyle factors, along with correcting the thyroid hormone imbalance will greatly improve your chances of NOT developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 3 Diabetes. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause reversible dementia (52), but this doesnt mean that these conditions can cause Alzheimers disease. One study involving 1,864 people looked at the relationship of TSH levels to the risk of developing Alzheimers disease (52). Over a follow-up period of 12.7 years, women with the lowest and highest TSH levels demonstrated an increased risk of developing Alzheimers disease, but the same study showed that TSH levels were not related to Alzheimers disease in men (52).

Another study I came across looked at the relationship between thyroid hormone replacement and the development of Alzheimers disease (53). Beta amyloid plaque accumulation is a factor with Alzheimers disease, and T3 can increase the production of these plaques (53). The results suggested that taking thyroid hormone medication may be associated with a faster rate of the diagnosis of dementia related to Alzheimers disease. However, there were a few limitations to this study, and more research is needed. In addition, the same study discussed how thyroid hormones play a significant role in the production and survival of microglial cells, which help to remove beta amyloid plaque from the brain.

I realize this was a lot of information, but hopefully you have a better understanding of the different types of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type, and unlike type 1 and 1.5 diabetes, it does not involve an autoimmune component. Many refer to Alzheimers as type 3 diabetes. The conventional approach for all of these types of diabetes is to lower blood glucose levels through diet and medication, and sometimes insulin therapy is administered, especially in type 1 and 1.5 diabetes. Natural treatment options also incorporate dietary changes, but nutritional supplements and herbs are also utilized. Plus you also need to remember to address the autoimmune component in type 1 and type 1.5 diabetes.

Is it possible to increase your health enough to improve your chances with COVID-19? There is no cure or vaccine for the novel Coronavirus. However, staying healthy is the best way to give your body a fighting chance.

As people age, their immune systems change, making it harder for their bodies to fight off diseases and infection. Who is at risk? Older adults and people who have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease.

Stefano Sarge is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Personal Trainer. A graduate of Governor Mifflin, Sarge is the co-founder of Ampersand Integrated Wellness, a local wellness company focusing on healthy lifestyles, managing injuries or other health related issues.

Now working from home himself, Sarge says the best way to begin an exercise routine is to get outside into nature. Its been shown and even supported with studies to help fight off anxiety and depression.

If youre just starting out, just look for things around your house says Sarge. Even if you dont have any weights you can use gallons of water. You can use broomsticks or use your couch and tables. Whatever you have, just keep it basic.

In addition to items around the house, Sarge suggests starting a daily routine of basic movements like squats, push ups, or planks. Most importantly, Sarge says this is the time to figure out what you like and dont like to do.

I would say my number one recommendation is to set up a schedule, develop a routine for yourself. The more you can make your workout consistent the easier its gonna be for you and its definitely gonna be a challenge at first.

Its not all about the workout, its also about the food you put in your body. There are no specific diets, or special foods, that will directly boost your immune system. However, eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise will increase your overall health, and give your body a better shot at defending against diseases and illnesses.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, good nutrition lowers peoples risk for many chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis. An overall healthy lifestyle must include good nutrition, regular physical activity, no smoking and stress management.

So what can you do to improve your immune system? Local certified nutrition and wellness consultant, Whitney George, fills us in. The number one thing that people can do first to improve the immune system response and function is to drop sugar from their diets.

Added sugars, refined carbohydrates, foods made out of flour, and even natural sources of sugars that are high glycemic like dried fruits, impair white blood cell function. Coinciding with the importance of sugar reduction for immune function is to increase non-starchy vegetables in the diet says George.

To maintain a balanced diet, George recommends eating 6-8 cups of non-starchy vegetables per day and 1/2-1 cup of low sugar fruits like berries, kiwi, and grapefruit.

It is from these plant foods that we get an abundance of phytonutrients like quercetin, rutin, luteolin, myricetin, resveratrol, and apigenin, which have immune strengthening properties says George.
