Vettel heads Hamilton in Valencia

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel took a stunning pole position at the European Grand Prix.

The world champion was 0.324 seconds clear of McLaren's Lewis Hamilton in an otherwise closely fought qualifying session on the Valencia street track.

I expected to be further back. We had to make some guesses as to what kind of set-up we wanted and it seemed to work OK

Williams's Pastor Maldonado was third, ahead of the Lotus drivers Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen, with Jenson Button ninth.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull's Mark Webber were 11th and 19th.

The Force Indias looked like they might challenge at the front but Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta ended up eighth and 10th.

Di Resta admitted that a mistake in the final corner on his final lap cost him the chance to be much higher up.

"I think we wouldn't have been far away but I just locked a wheel," Di Resta said.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was sixth, ahead of Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi.

Vettel's pole was his third in a row at this track, and the 33rd of his career, matching the great Jim Clark and Alain Prost.

China's banking industry has seen a boom in its managed assets following the fast expansion of banks' asset custody business, the China Banking Association said Thursday.

Assets under the management of Chinese banks reached a record 14.15-T Yuan (US$2.25-T) by the end of Y 2011, an increase of 49.27% from a year earlier, according to a report released by the association.

The figure marked a rise of 277% from 3.75-T Yuan in Y 2009, the report said.

First in the form of a closed-end securities investment fund established in Y 1998, the asset custody service has become a fast-growing banking business that covers extensive domains, the report said.

In the asset custody business, banks serve as the 3rd party to take care of the entrusted assets and perform various duties, including account settlement, asset evaluation and investment oversight, according to trust contracts and regulations.

The assets of five custody products currently exceed 2-T Yuan each. Wealth investment products take the biggest share, valued at 3.89-T Yuan, followed by entrusted insurance funds at 2.65-T Yuan and entrusted property 2.31-T Yuan.

By the end of Y 2011, 18 Chinese commercial banks, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the country's largest lender, obtained the qualifications necessary to run such businesses.

Their custodians' fees totaled 16.8-B Yuan as of the end of Y 2011.

D.C. goes for fifth straight win vs. N.Y.

Harrison, NJ (Sports Network) - D.C. United will put its four-game winning streak to the test on Sunday when it heads to Red Bull Arena to face Red Bull New York in the latest installment of the Atlantic Cup.

The Eastern Conference leaders picked up a fourth successive win last time out, defeating the Philadelphia Union 1-0 at PPL Park.

D.C. now returns to the pitch for a second straight rivalry game, and that is just the way head coach Ben Olsen likes it.

"When the league changed the schedule where we would play New York and Philly and New England more I was pumped," Olsen told the Capital Soccer Show earlier this week. "I liked playing in those games as a player, I like coaching in them and I think people enjoy watching them."

The Red Bulls could be tired after two straight road games, but United captain Dwayne De Rosario insists that the home side will come to play.

"It's a game they are going to be up for regardless if they are fatigued or not," said De Rosario. "I think they got enough days to rest."

New York is winless in its last three matches, taking just two points from that haul. After a two-and-a-half-week break, the club returned to action with a 3-1 loss at the Chicago Fire before leaving it late in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday.

The Red Bulls showed great resolve to pick up a point on the road, especially as they were missing Designated Players Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez.

"We have great players that are missing so we had to step up and get a point in a tough environment," winger Dane Richards told reporters after the match. "That showed depth and the coaches have done a great job."

Heath Pearce popped up with the tying goal four minutes from time, keeping the Red Bulls within touching distance of first-place D.C. United.

Heads Up: Colonia San Rafael in Mexico City is on the Upswing

BESIDE the small, open courtyard on the roof of a former mansion, Anuar Maauad had a cigarette in one hand, a beer in the other and a ringing constantly ringing cellphone in front of him on his long kitchen table. He sat, flanked by friends, as the Mexico City sky exploded with thunder so powerful it shook the 123-year-old building.

The Museo Universitario del Chopo, one of the restoration projects transforming Colonia San Rafael in Mexico City.

The 6,500-square-foot Casa Maauad is a work in progress. Mr. Maauad, a 28-year-old architect turned sculptor, bought the building in 2010 and has lived there while renovating the badly deteriorated structure. The three-story house, rumored to have once been a brothel, is now home to Marso (marso.com.mx), consisting of a curatorial space that opened this spring, an artist residency program and studios for Mr. Maauads friends.

Mr. Maauads house is part of the emerging art scene in Colonia San Rafael, a crumbling working-class neighborhood that in its heyday was home to the upper crust and considered the Broadway of Mexico. Its decline began in the 1970s, when San Rafaels French-influenced 19th-century mansions were abandoned by wealthy residents fleeing in the wake of a new metro line that made it reachable by all. Then, in 1985, an earthquake damaged several of the areas theaters and forced out many of the remaining middle-class families. The neighborhood became a notorious red-light district. But as artists are priced out of nearby Colonia Condesa and Colonia Roma, San Rafaels metro line and the affordability of its gorgeous, decaying buildings have become increasingly attractive.

Institutions are reclaiming forgotten structures as well. One of the most historically significant museums, the Museo Experimental El Eco (Sullivan 43; 52-55-5535-5186; http://www.eleco.unam.mx) reopened in 2005. Founded in the early 50s, the museum was supplanted by a gay bar before the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) bought the building and restored it. El Eco now presents a diverse set of works, from an open-air Godard screening to an installation by the Amsterdam-based artist Praneet Soi.

Just across the Santa Mara la Ribera border is Museo Universitario del Chopo (Dr. Enrique Gonzlez Martnez 10; 52-55-5546-3471; http://www.chopo.unam.mx), another UNAM restoration project for a former exhibit hall transported from Dsseldorf, Germany, in 1902. Enrique Nortens firm, TEN Arquitectos, reconceived the interior. It has now opened as a multidisciplinary space ideal for programs like the current International Festival of Sexual Diversity, with film, lecture and visual arts components.

But the recent revival also includes independent gallerists like Gerardo Contreras, the director of Preteen Gallery(Joaqun Velazquez de Len 58, interior 5; 52-55-2663-9070; preteengallery.net). The tiny studio, across a pink courtyard, is a glaring white. On a recent evening, Mr. Contreras apologized for his floors, which had been pocked by high heels at his last opening. It was packed, he said. Titled after a derogatory word for gay men, the show featured connect-the-dots coloring books that, when completed, revealed naughty scenes from 1970s gay pornography magazines.

Around the corner, Brett Schultz and Daniela Elbahara opened the storefront gallery Yautepec (Melchor Ocampo 154-A; 52-55-5256-5533; yau.com.mx) in 2009. They initially looked for space in Roma. But the rents were already crazy high, Mr. Schultz said.

In San Rafaels scrappy, bootstrapping art scene, Galera Hilario Galguera (Francisco Pimentel 3; 52-55-5546-6703; galeriahilariogalguera.com) is the exception, an established gallery that draws big names like Damien Hirst and propels Mexican artists like Bosco Sodi to international prominence. It was one of the first to bring an American kind of gallery, a white cube, to Mexico, said its director, Mauricio Galguera.

It must be strange to be in this traditional, folkloric neighborhood and come into this building, Mr. Galguera said. But, he added, given the areas history, I think it really fits.

Empire restaurant ready to turn heads in Seaport District

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Fan Pier developer Joseph Fallon are expected to cut the ribbon today as Big Night Entertainment Group opens Empire restaurant on the ground floor of One Marina Park Drive in the bustling Seaport District.

The Asian-themed restaurant will be the seventh venue opened in just six years by fast-growing BNEG, which was founded by brothers Ed and Joe Kane and partner Randy Greenstein. The 14,000-square-foot restaurant that will seat 350 patrons will open next week and serve as a complement to Strega Waterfront, the other restaurant at One Marina Park Drive.

For me, this is our best design ever, said Ed Kane, during a tour of the still-under-construction space last week. Its going to be the biggest head-turner.

Full of custom features from backlit wooden screens to moon door mirrors to mosaic tile floors and masterful stone work, the restaurant will have a sushi bar, private dining rooms and seasonal outdoor seating, all awash in imperial colors that Kane, who travels the world looking for design ideas, says will give it a Hong Kong, new Shanghai look.

The Kanes and Greenstein got their start together at The Estate nightclub in Boston, but quickly expanded in 2007 by inking a deal with Foxwoods Resort and Casino and opening Shrine, an Asian-themed restaurant and nightclub, in the complexs MGM Grand expansion.

The success of Shrine was followed by two more Foxwoods projects: Scorpion Bar in 2008 and the retro-chic bowling alley High Rollers Luxury Lanes in 2010.

Then, the Big Night team turned their attention back to Boston, opening Back Bays Red Lantern Restaurant and Lounge in 2011 and the downtown supper club GEM recently.

But Greenstein says Empire, which will initially be open just for dinner, is going to be the best one yet.

The waterfront is where its at, he said. Its perfect timing for us. The areas exploding as we speak.

With shovels already in the ground by the four major developers in the area and Vertex Pharmaceuticals new headquarters being built next door, Empire may be surrounded by construction for a while, but Big Night is investing in the long term, pouring $6 million into the project, which has a 20-year lease.

Sharapova favorite to reign at Wimbledon

LONDON (Reuters) - With the red clay of Roland Garros tamed, Maria Sharapova heads to the less alien setting of Wimbledon's grass a clear favorite having completed the career grand slam and regained her place at the pinnacle of the rankings.

Having washed the red dust out of her long blonde hair, she waves goodbye to her least favorite surface - on which she once described herself as a "cow on ice" - and says hello to Centre Court where she feels much more at home.

The Russian arrives as the number one seed and world number one having managed to keep her long limbs in check to win her first French Open title.

In doing so, Sharapova proved that she is head and shoulders above the current crop of women players.

Those who would be expected to challenge her at Wimbledon, such as four-times champion Serena Williams and last year's winner Petra Kvitova, have all looked distinctly second best in the run-up to this year's event.

Williams suffered a humiliating first-round exit in Paris at the hands of Virginie Razzano, while Kvitova was convincingly swatted aside by Sharapova in a one-sided semi-final, before being beaten in the first round at the Eastbourne International.

For the younger Williams sister, Paris defeat came as a shock after she had looked in fine fettle with a run of 17 straight wins, which included the Madrid title on clay, in the build up to Roland Garros.

The world number six is perhaps the only player who can rival and outpunch Sharapova when it comes to playing aggressive front-foot tennis which is borne out by an 8-2 winning record against the Russian.

As she nears the end of a trophy-laden career in which she has won 13 grand slams and emerged from a life-threatening injury, the American's hunger for more is frequently called into question, however.

"I've been through so much in my life, I just always think things can be worse," was her philosophical take on defeat in Paris.

Emma Stone’s Goth-Inspired Red Carpet Look Turns Heads

Emma Stone wowed red carpet-watchers on Tuesday with a goth-inspired Gucci gown for the Paris premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man.

The 23-year-old actress attended the event with boyfriend Andrew Garfield, who appears alongside her in the superhero flick. Fittingly, the pair play on-screen love interests Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy.

Stones stunning goth attire combined a plunging V neckline with a thigh-revealing side split, and was complemented by a glamourous vintage hair-do and dark wine red lips; Garfield considerately wore a suit that matched his girlfriends lipstick.

The Amazing Spider-Man hits U.S. theaters on July 3. Directed by Marc Webb and based on the Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, it is a reboot of the Sam Raimi film series, with Garfield replacing Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.

The film depicts Parker in high school, as his super powers are evolving, and follows Parker/Spidey as he attempts to discover the truth behind his parents. There are subtle changes that hark back to the original comics, such as how Parker invents artificial webs, rather than organic webs.

The film is Stones first release of 2012, following a busy 2011 in which she starred in Friends with Benefits, Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Help.

Heres Stone in her full-length Gucci gown on the red carpet. Do you think she nails the goth look, readers? And will you be rushing to catch The Amazing Spider-Man?

Monty heads field for local British Open qualifier

Victorious Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie heads the field for the 36-hole British Open qualifier at Sunningdale in England.

Joining Montgomerie on Monday are six other Ryder Cup stars, including potential 2014 European captain Paul McGinley of Ireland.

Other Ryder Cup players include the England trio of Ross Fisher, Oliver Wilson and David Howell, Frenchman Thomas Levet and Welshman Phil Price.

A field of 96 players will take to the Surrey course with the top 12 assured entry into the British Open starting on July 19 at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

Montgomerie played every British Open from 1990 to 2010 before missing out on qualifying last year.

The Scot, who turns 49 on Saturday, recently tried to qualify for the U.S. Open but was unsuccessful.

McGinley has missed out on qualifying for the past two years.

Also competing Monday will be 45-year old American Billy Mayfair, who last contested a major in the 2009 British Open, finishing 52nd.

Among the reserves seeking entry into the qualifier is Sweden's Niclas Fasth, who was runner-up in the 2001 British Open, the last time it was staged at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

Red Sox Shouldn't Gamble with Pedroia: Fan Take

The Boston Red Sox are on the heels of a 3-game winning streak for the first time this month. Unfortunately, the team might be heading towards another streak of a different kind. Still stuck at the bottom of the AL East, the Sox could face their third straight year without a postseason. With their fate to be decided as summer unfolds, Bobby V and company should be bracing for a marathon not a sprint. So why are they taking foolish risks with Dustin Pedroia?

Tuesday's 7-5 win over the Miami Marlins meant that a mercifully long homestand (9 games) got off on the right foot. Pedroia's performance was the sort of thing the Red Sox were hoping for when they decided to keep him off the DL at the beginning of the month. The homestand opener saw Pedroia go 1-for-3, hitting a double in the bottom of the first while helping to turn in a double-play in the top of the third and a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fifth.

Nevertheless, by the time Pedroia made his way into clubhouse after an early exit, shaking his hand in pain, I probably wasn't the only Red Sox fan who was unsurprised. With the season essentially stuck in the mud, management had figured it was too costly to have Pedroia sit out on a lengthy DL stint despite a torn adductor muscle in his right thumb. The deep slump that followed shouldn't have had anyone scratching their heads.

The Red Sox didn't get much for their gamble. Over the course of the 13 games he's played this month since returning from that initial thumb injury, he's hit .170 and has a .237 OBP while his slugging percentage is .226 and his OPS for June stands at .463. It's worth remembering that Pedroia went 2-for-14 in Chicago. That his BA for the season is .269 right now, still above Adrian Gonzalez's .257, just shows what how important a healthy Pedroia has been for this team.

With Will Middlebrooks as reliable as ever, and the apparent inevitability of a Kevin Youkilis trade, the Red Sox look like they'll have a chance to mix things up and stay competitive as the season starts to reach the halfway point. The first playoff berth since 2009 is hardly a stretch, but they'll need Pedroia at 100% make it happen, and right now he's clearly not healthy.

Bobby V has said that the thumb is a "nonissue" and that "there's no swelling." But it's clear that the thumb has affected Pedroia's swing, if only because he's worried about jamming it all over again. While Valentine seemed to dismiss the concerns of spooked fans on Tuesday, here's hoping he realizes that Pedroia needs recovery time on the DL to make the thumb a "nonissue."

Taurus Londono has lived in Massachusetts for over ten years. He is a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox.

City Leaders Cracked Heads at the County Line

Around noon on March 31, 1912, a crier waved a red banner down Fifth Street. The public is invited to Seventh and B Streets at 2:30, the banner announced, to attend the funeral of Michael Hoey, who died in the cause of Free Speech.

A large man chased the crier down, hooked him around the neck, and slammed him to the pavement. Then the man loaded his mouth with saliva and spit on the emblem of anarchy.

At 2:30, the doors opened at Johnson, Connell, & Saums Mortuary. Harry Daggett emerged first. He wore a frayed, three-piece suit and hoisted a red flag. Behind him came 20 IWW Wobblies. As six men carried Hoeys casket two blocks from the mortuary to the vacant lot at Seventh and B, angry onlookers assembled on the sidewalks.

Thats how contemptible they are, said a sailor from the USS Maryland, using the sanctity of death to protect them.

Too cowardly otherwise, added another.

When the cortege reached the vacant lot, free-speech supporters awaited them. Daggett stepped to the side.

Get the fellow with the red flag, someone shouted. Thats too much!

Detective Harvey Shepherd raised a hand: Dont interrupt the service, he said. Ill get him.

At the station, Daggett told police he didnt know what the flag meant. Hed become the color bearer because Mike Hoey was his friend and a good man. Asked if he was a Wobbly, Daggett said no, but he believed in most of their principles and would let better minds than his plan solutions. When Daggett left the station, wrote the Union, he had to run a gauntlet of hisses, hoots, and jeers from the crowd outside.

Gray-haired Michael Hoey was an IWW veteran of free-speech fights in Spokane and Fresno. Arrested during the first week of protests in San Diego, Hoey spent 40 days in city jail. Although they denied it, Hoey swore that three officers rookie patrolman Irwin, in particular clubbed and kicked him repeatedly in the groin. Cramped with over 100 prisoners in a cell built for 60, Hoey had to sleep on a cement floor and eat inedible food. When I asked Dr. Claude Magee [the police surgeon] for a laxative, he gave me an emetic, which caused such violent vomiting that I became seriously ill.

Red alert still up over La Mesa Dam

By Riza T. Olchondra Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines Authorities monitoring La Mesa Dam in Quezon City remained on red alert status Tuesday morning even though the water level eased at the facility, according to Manila Water Co., which keeps close watch on the Angat-Ipo-La Mesa Dam Raw Water System.

As the La Mesa Dam water level reaches 88.30 meters, it automatically releases water when it reaches its overflow limit of 80.15 meters. The released water will add to the water level in the Tullahan River. INQUIRER FILE PHOTO

From midnight to around 8 a.m., the water at La Mesa eased by 4 centimeters to 79.73 meters, Manila Water corporate communications chief Jeric T. Sevilla said in a text message.

For the alert to be downgraded to yellow, the water level of La Mesa should be below 79.60 meters, Sevilla said.

La Mesa Dam was also placed under red alert Monday.

LGUs (local government units) downstream of Tullahan (River) are still on alert, Sevilla said on Monday night.

Citing reports received by the water concessionaire as of 8 p.m., Sevilla said that compared to 4 p.m. levels, the water at La Mesa Dam was steady at 79.79 meters, Angat Dam increased by 1 centimeter to 189.19 meters, and Ipo Dam decreased by 11 cm. to 100.31 meters.

Still, given that rains have stopped, We expect that level (in Ipo) will gradually go down as well, Sevilla said.

The authorities get concerned when the water level at La Mesa Dam breaches 79.40 meters, Sevilla said.

Kate Nash heads for Guildford's Boileroom

KATE Nash has just returned to London from Los Angeles, where she has been writing and recording songs for her third album, and she cant stop talking about how much she loves the place.

It was amazing, we stayed in this old nunnery in this huge park. Its owned by an interior designer and antiques dealer so it was full of crazy taxidermy stuff and there were two huge guard dogs, she explained at about one hundred miles an hour.

It was inspirational to be able to create music and work in that big space and then muck around with my girlfriends in the evening and have parties and stuff.

The happy-go-lucky singer, who shot to fame in 2007 when her debut album Made Of Bricks went to number one, is embarking on a short intimate tour, during which she will give fans a sneak peak of songs from the new album.

The Faster Pussycat Run Run Tour stops at the Boileroom in Guildford on Friday, June 29, a venueNash admitted she had never played before, but which is a familiar place for her all-girl backing band, Emma Hughes (bass), Carmen Vandenberg (guitar) and Fern Ford (drums), who hail from the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM).

My manager went to ACM and she knew a lot people there. Before my tour last year, she suggested we looked there for a backing band. I saw and then interviewed a few musicians and I knew straight away the ones that I wanted, and they have been great and now theyre like my best friends, she beamed.

Although the new album will have Nashs recognisable quirky lyrics, the 24-year-old admitted it was quite a departure from her last album, My Best Friend Is You, and its predecessor.

Its a lot more angsty. Ive written everything on the bass. Its still about my feelings but its a bit more out there like a punch in the face, the musician explained. Musically it really comes from my gut.

And its not just her music that has had an overhaul, her image is also a lot more gritty than when she burst onto the pop scene, and she has also landed herself acting roles in two feature films.

My image has changed so I do look quite different. I think people recognised me before for my red hair, but thats gone now and Im browny/blonde, she said.
