WRESTLING | Start of Season Ahead

The Red heads into the season with the first matchup of the year against Binghamton Friday at home. After a great season last year with senior Kyle Dake, senior Steve Bosak and Cam Simaz 12 all winning NCAA National Championship titles for the Red, the wrestling culture at Cornell expects and prepares for greatness in the upcoming season.

Coming into this season after losing a few critical members of the team to graduation, the squad brought in some reinforcements in the form of ten new freshmen Aaron Benedict, Scott Bosak, Logan David, Chris Dowdy, Nashon Garrett, Casey OMalley, Duke Pickett, Joe Rendina, Owen Scott and Craig Scott. However, some of the guys that have been around the Reds mat for a while continue to maintain their dominance as well including Dake, who already won the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 3, beating out Penn States David Taylor, 2-1, this season.

This past weekend the team held its annual Red-White eliminations where the 20 members of the team battled it out for the top 10 spots and the honor to start for Cornell. The Red team David, Pickett, Scott, Dake, junior Nick Arujau, senior Joe Stanzione, junior Chris Villalonga, junior Craig Eifert, sophomore Jace Bennett and senior Stryker Lane won six matchups to grab a 24-13 victory over the White Garrett, junior Josh Kennedy, junior Mike Nevinger, junior Ryan Dunphy, junior Jesse Shanaman, senior Patrick Sullivan, junior Marshall Peppelman, senior Pete Mesko, sophomore Billy George and sophomore Jacob Aiken-Phillips.

The problem is we have had an unbelievable rash of injuries. Steve Bosak had a minor surgery in the wrist [and] it got a staff infection. Seven or eight weeks later, he is still not back on the mat. Steve is a returning national champion, so we cant lose kids like that, said head coach Rob Koll. In his place, we have a freshman Craig Scott who ended up placing second in the tournament last weekend and is very respectable [though].

Highlights of the day were Dake winning by fall over Sullivan in 165 lbs., Bennett over George in the 197 lbs. class and Peppelman over Pickett in the 174 lbs.

We have a couple good kids at 197. We have Jace Bennett and Billy George He is now 197. We have two solid wrestlers there. I am not saying that they are going to be Cam [Simaz], that would be pretty hard but they are respectable kids. They are young, they are sophomores, but they are respectable, Koll said.

This Friday, the Red will host Binghamton at Friedman at 6:30 p.m. in its first home match of the season. In the past three seasons, the Red has swept Binghamton in the dual meets between the teams winning 22-21 last season while away, 35-3 in 2011 at home and 43-9 in 2010 at home.

It is the season of the knee injuries. I have never had this many injuries. They are not season ending but they are match ending. It doesnt hurt us in the long run but in the short run it could make this match a lot closer than we would like it to be against Binghamton, Koll said.

CROSS COUNTRY | After Strong Showing at Heps, Red Heads to NCAA Regional

After strong finishes by both the mens and womens cross country teams at the Heps finals, the Red is headed to Hamonnasset, Conn. for the NCAA Northeast Regional meet. At this point in the season, coaches are restricted to fielding a squad of only seven runners for the NCAA regional meet.

According to womens cross country coach Artie Smith 96, selecting the team he wanted to field was both easy and difficult.

On the one hand its easy, but its also tough, he said. Its easy because there are certain athletes I know can run well, but its tough because we have such a deep team. Part of the reason weve been so good this year is because weve had great depth.

Mens cross country coach Zeb Lang 03 said that he based his selection on individual performances up to this point.

I selected our team based on performance up to date, he said. Its my best seven to date that Ill be taking to the NCAA Regional championships.

While hes happy that his team won the Heps, Smith spoke about how his teams goal was to remain competitive all season, even beyond the Heps.

I would say that with this group, the reason they were successful at the Heps is because they have aspirations of being successful above the Heps, he said. Theyve had the goal the whole season of being successful at the national level, and I think their focus has been consistent and straightforward all season.

Lang echoed those sentiments, and went on to describe how his team has performed according to his expectations up to this point in the season, a team he characterizes as being very resilient.

These guys have exceeded my expectations, he said. Every time weve had adversity or a bump in the road, theyve responded. Weve had younger guys step to the forefront and raise their game to another level.

As one of the top teams in the Northeast Region, the womens team is expected to fare well this weekend against the rest of the Northeast. Smith feels that his team doesnt have to do anything out of the ordinary to compete well.

Without the All American Red Heads, there would be no WNBA

It's 1966, early winter, on a desolate stretch of Western highway. Ben Overman thinks it's time for "roadwork." He pulls the white limousine to the shoulder. Seven doors open in near unison, as seven young women all willowy redheads groan at the first blast of icy air. They fall into line, some of them kneeling to tighten the laces of sneakers that seem incongruous with the slacks, blouses and sweaters they wear. The cold is so sharp that each inhalation pierces their lungs.

Overman waves out the window and the limousine begins to move, slowly now, as the women jog, puffing tiny clouds of hot breath. The few passing vehicles slow down, both out of courtesy and so the occupants can gawk. It's not everyday that you see a parade of redheaded women crunching through snow, exercising in street clothes with teased hair and full make-up. Overman accompanies them for a bit, just to make sure everyone's OK, and then he drives a few miles ahead, parks and waits. Once the women reach him, the day's training is over. They can relax on the ride to the next high school, YMCA or junior college gym, where they will paint their eyelids blue and their lips cherry-red, toss their henna-dyed hair under florescent lights and play basketball.

The women are members of the All American Red Heads. They barnstorm the country, playing up to 220 games a year and performing circus-style halftime shows. Since the team's beginnings in 1936, the Red Heads have played entirely against men, by men's rules. Forty-six years from now, they'll become the first women's professional basketball team to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. But at the moment, they're just trying to get through this run.

One of the joggers is Judy Cameron 19, 5'10", all legs and an auburn bob. She comes from a farming family in Parkers Chapel, a Union County speck too small for any map. The Red Heads are her escape from eleven siblings and an alcoholic father. She was hired midseason last year, sight unseen, on the strength of her high school reputation. When she got the contract in the mail, she immediately dropped out of Southern State College. Her father didn't think women should go to college anyhow.

Another jogger, Pat Overman, nee Rimer, joined the team four years ago, as an 18-year-old with naturally fiery locks. An expert shooter and soft-spoken diplomat, she'd been a basketball star in her hometown of Edina, Mo. Now Red Head comedienne, she has the toughest position pulling gags and engaging the crowd, while playing better ball than anyone. It took Pat a few years to make comedienne but only a few months to make the coach her husband. The summer after the team's first season on the road, Ben Overman showed up at Pat Rimer's family's home. He had hidden his feelings, but was under the gun they had three months off, and if he didn't move fast, he'd have to pretend that he was only interested in Pat's basketball skills for all of the following season.

That summer, the two courted for a month, married at a Methodist church in Edina, bought a starter home in Ben's Craighead County hometown of Caraway, and then reported for training.

The Red Heads traveled in DeSotos, station wagons and later, limousines, playing daily or even twice a day. Mostly they played fundraisers, splitting the door with whatever civic club or high school student council hosted them. Their opponents were former varsity athletes turned town leaders, and their toughest games were on army bases, against robust young soldiers. Sometimes they played professional athletes, like the Boston Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, who had off-season basketball teams, and once, in Long Island, they played a team that included Julius Erving. The Red Heads sprinkled their games with jokes, such as covering their opponents' eyes, bouncing passes beneath legs and leaving a big lipstick smudge on a referee's bald head. But the Red Heads played to win, and about 70 percent of the time, they did.
