Its a scene the 20-year-old Salvation Army volunteer has witnessed hundreds of times this holiday season, each one quite by design.

The most common thing I hear is that it sounds way better than the bells, said Hall, who spent most of his Saturday outside Keils market in San Carlos playing tuba and soliciting donations for charity.

One lady wrote me a check because my music stopped her, he said after a slow soulful rendition of O Come All Ye Faithful.

This holiday season, as so many struggle still to meet obligations and provide for their families, donations to the familiar red kettles have plunged by double digits.

Salvation Army officials say donations have dropped 15 percent or more nationally so far this year. They are crossing their fingers for a huge finish before Christmas morning.

Thanksgiving was so late this year, it just knocked five or six days off our schedule, said Adrienne Finley, who oversees fundraising for the Sierra Del Mar division, which includes San Diego, Imperial, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. We kind of lost a week.

The Red Kettle campaign is best known for the nonstop bell-ringing performed by armies of volunteers camped outside stores across the nation. The 150 volunteers deployed in San Diego County are critical to providing recovery, health, emergency and other services all year.

Money raised in San Diego stays in San Diego, Finley said.

Donations in some communities have dropped 30 or 40 percent over last year, the Salvation Army said.

The Roman historian Tacitus commented on the "red hair and large limbs of the inhabitants of Caledonia",[6] which he connected with some red haired Gaulish tribes of Germanic and Belgic relation.

In Asia, red hair has been found among the ancient Tocharians, who occupied the Tarim Basin in what is now the northwesternmost province of China. Caucasian Tarim mummies have been found with red hair dating to the 2nd millennium BC.[7]

Red hair is also found amongst Polynesians, and is especially common in some tribes and family groups. In Polynesian culture red hair has traditionally been seen as a sign of descent from high ranking ancestors and a mark of rulership.[8][9]

Today, red hair is most commonly found at the northern and western fringes of Europe; it is associated particularly with the people located in the British Isles (although Victorian era ethnographers claimed that the Udmurt people of the Volga were "the most red-headed men in the world").[10] Redheads are common among Germanic and Celtic peoples.

Red hair is also fairly common amongst the Ashkenazi Jewish populations, possibly because of the influx of European DNA over a period of centuries.[15] In European culture, prior to the 20th century, red hair was often seen as a stereotypically Jewish trait: during the Spanish Inquisition, all those with red hair were identified as Jewish.[16] In Italy, red hair was associated with Italian Jews, and Judas was traditionally depicted as red-haired in Italian and Spanish art.[17] Writers from Shakespeare to Dickens would identify Jewish characters by giving them red hair.[18] The stereotype that red hair is Jewish remains in parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.[19]

Gentlemen prefer blondes (or so the saying goes) but from time to time they prefer brunettes (take the 90s for example). In earlier history they preferred redheads. These days redheads get a bad wrap being referred to as gingers and other unpleasant names. This list is their redemption! A focus entirely on redheads. So, here are the 25 most significant redheads in history. This list is in no particular order.

1. Carol Burnett (b. 1933) American comedienne and actress most famous for her own variety show, The Carol Burnett Show (1967-1978). She also appeared on Mamas Family in a few episodes reprising the role of Eunice that she created with co-star Vickie Lawrence, and as Jamies mother on Mad About You. In addition, shes done several films and voice-overs. However, she will most likely be remembered most for her ear-tugging salute to her grandmother, her hilarious Tarzan call, and her parody of Gone with the Wind called Went with the Wind.

2. Lucille Ball (1911 1989) American comedienne and actress most famous for the historic early sitcom she created with real-life husband Desi Arnaz called I Love Lucy (1951-1957). I Love Lucy was memorable for being the first American TV show to star a female and one of the first American TV shows to present a pregnant woman, although they werent allowed to say the word pregnant. The most watched episode in American TV history during that time was when Lucy gave birth to Little Ricky during the shows second season. Many of the famous situations on the show are old vaudeville routines, and one of the most memorable is the Chocolate Factory. [Pictured above]

3. Margaret Sanger (1879 1966) She ushered in the modern age of womens liberation by fostering birth control. She successfully mobilized American women to take an active role in the decision to have or not have children. One of her organizations would eventually become Planned Parenthood, and she lived long enough to actively campaign for the legalization of the birth control pill.

4. Judas Iscariot (d. 29-33) One of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ who betrayed Him and identified Christ for Roman soldiers with a kiss in the Garden of Gethsemane for 30 pieces of silver. According to most biblical accounts, Judas was later overcome with guilt and returned the silver and hanged himself, although some accounts have him living several years longer before dying.

5. Lynette Squeaky Fromme (b. 1948) One of Charles Mansons family members who had a passive role in the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969 and an active role in the attempted assassination of US President Gerald Ford in 1975. For the latter, she received a life sentence which she is serving in Texas despite a two-day escape in 1987.

Red Hat shares jump as Q3 earnings, revenue beat estimates

Summary: The open source software provider posted a solid third quarter report as revenue climbed 15 percent, year-over-year.

Just before everyone heads home for the holidays, Red Hat piped out its third quarter earnings report after the bell on Thursday.

The open source giant reported a net income of $52 million, or 27 cents per share (statement). Non-GAAP earnings were 42 cents per share on a revenue of $397 million, up 15 percent annually.

Wall Street was looking for earnings of 35 cents per share on a revenue of $383.11 million.

Almost immediately after the report was published, Red Hat shares jumped by roughly 10 percent in after-hours trading.

With subscription revenues up 17 percent year-over-year to $343 million for the quarter, CEO James Whitehurst highlighted the key products that delivered last quarter:

Strong demand in Q3 for our core Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Middleware technologies led to results that exceeded guidance across several key financial metrics. Red Hat's technologies address the high growth opportunities in the data center to modernize and move away from legacy proprietary software in order to deploy open hybrid cloud technologies that drive IT velocity, efficiency and scalability.

Chief financial officer Charlie Peters also credited "the strengthening of our European and U.S. federal government businesses" as major revenue contributions over the last three months.

Looking forward, Wall Street is expecting Red Hat to return with a fourth quarter revenue of $394.05 million and non-GAAP earnings around 36 cents per share.

Right-on-red postings: Right or wrong?

Q: I am perplexed by how the 'right turn on red' prohibition is applied at different intersections. In East Allen Township, Snowdrift Road joins Airport Road at an oblique angle, opposite Hanoverville Road. Drivers on Snowdrift stopped at the light at Airport routinely turn right on red. I think right on red should be prohibited.

Q: Why aren't right turns on red allowed from Dauphin Street onto Union Boulevard in Allentown? There's plenty of sight-distance. I think it would be perfectly safe, and traffic would move along more efficiently.

A: Traffic engineers determine whether right turns on red are allowed at signalized intersections. Guidelines apply, but conditions at no two intersections are exactly alike, and interpretation plays a main-road role in deciding where to post "no turn on red" signs, and where to let traffic flow more freely. In cases where the ban is in effect and the reasons for that seem unclear, engineers likely decided to err on the side of caution, theoretically favoring motorist and pedestrian safety. On the other side of the road, the demands of efficient traffic flow should get due consideration.

According to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, a kind of road map for U.S. traffic engineers, "no turn on red' should be considered when one or more of the following conditions exists:

"Inadequate sight distance to vehicles approaching from the left (or right, if applicable); geometrics or operational characteristics of the intersection that might result in unexpected conflicts; an exclusive pedestrian phase; an unacceptable number of pedestrian conflicts with right-turn-on-red maneuvers, especially involving children, older pedestrians, or persons with disabilities; more than three right-turn-on-red accidents reported in a 12-month period for the articular approach, or the skew angle of the intersecting roadways creates difficulty for drivers to see traffic approaching from their left."

Some of these are wide-open highways to interpretation ("unacceptable" number of pedestrian conflicts), and note that the manual says the ban "should be considered," not "shall be imposed." At the end of the road, it's largely a judgment call.

Properly executed right turns on red are allowed in Pennsylvania in the absence of "no turn on red" or "no turns" signs. The law first requires a complete stop, and yielding to conflicting vehicular or pedestrian traffic. Left-on-red is allowed if both streets are one-way streets. And it's strictly optional: Drivers can refuse to make the turn for any reason, including merely to aggravate the impatient motorists behind them. (That may not be polite, but it is perfectly legal.)

The intersection of Airport Road with Snowdrift and Hanoverville roads is a model so rare it's suitable for collectors. As you pointed out in your email, Edwin, it features traffic-signal heads mounted on the same cross-member but facing in different directions to control different streams of traffic. For motorists on Snowdrift facing Airport, the signal heads on the arm to the right, but angled toward Snowdrift, work in concert with those across Airport; the angled heads are auxiliaries, more easily viewed by right-turners. Motorists crossing to Hanover tend to maneuver their vehicles to face Hanover, and thus face the signals across the way. It's unusual.

Detroit Red Wings: 5 Storylines That Won’t Go Away During 2013-14 Season

The Detroit Red Wings have uncharacteristically struggled at home this season, but they have been road warriors with an amazing record away from Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit's dominance on the road can be summed up by their strong five-on-five play and dominant penalty kill. Detroit is giving up just 2.125 goals per road game, meaning that it is much easier to win on a consistent basis away from The Joe.

Keep in mind that Detroit has played just 16 road games this season, so it will be interesting to see if Detroit can keep this play up all season.

If that can happen, they should go into any playoff series as a favorite, having learned to play well away from home and potentially opening a playoff series on the road.The Wings are in the wild-card spot right now.

For now though, this disparity in records remains something to shake one's head at than anything else.

If Detroit can become more consistent at home and tone down on the exorbitant amount of goals that they are giving up there (second worst only to the Ottawa Senators in terms of total number), then the Red Wings can improve in the standings.

The color of Santas skin though a hotly debated topic among adults this week pretty much means bupkis to the kids mobbing Kris Kringle at a Hyattsville mall.

That red suit means loot. And it basically ends right there.

Im just excited to see him, and I want him to bring me some doll babies, DaeLese, 6, said as she waited in line at the Mall at Prince Georges, which features one of the regions few African American Santas. But his race wasnt what brought DaeLese and her mom, Masche Williams, 26, to the mall.

I dont care if hes yellow, black, green. And she doesnt care shes so excited to see him because he brings toys, Williams said.

I took my two blond-haired, pink-cheeked children to this mall Santa, a light-complexioned black man with the requisite white beard and hearty laugh. Would they notice his race?

Nope. They didnt hesitate or comment. They climbed on his knees, smiled for the camera elves and ticked off their wish lists. Their voluminous wish lists.

Okay, their pure, naked greed was embarrassing. But I felt a sense of relief that, unlike Megyn Kelly of Fox News, my children and the other kids in line werent fixated on Santas skin color. In our amazingly diverse region, they dont feel any need to declare Santa white. Or any other race or ethnicity.

But the debate does raise an interesting question: Should we rotate Santas on that mall throne to fit our increasingly colorful world? Latino Santa a las dos, Korean Santa until four, then the Senegalese Santa comes.

I spent days trying to find out if these versions of Santa exist. At casting agencies, Santa sourcers said they rarely get ethnically or racially specific requests. I called Latino and Hispanic associations all over the region to see where the best Spanish-speaking Santa could be found.

Huh. I dont know of any. But thats a good business opportunity, said Michel Zajur, chief executive of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
