Land transfer for proposed Red Wings arena clears council committee, heads for final vote Tuesday

Construction of a new Red Wings arena near downtown cleared a hurdle with a City Council committee on Thursday, but the council president said the developers promises to hire Detroiters on the project are not yet strong enough to win her final support for the project.

Council President Brenda Jones said she still wants a guarantee that Detroit residents will receive jobs after the arena is built.

Related: New Red Wings arena project should mean jobs for Detroiters, groups say

At the meeting, representatives of the arenas developer Olympia Development of Michigan, an Ilitch company did not commit to changing the terms of the arenas work force requirements, but they insisted the Ilitch family, which owns the Red Wings, has a strong history of hiring Detroiters.

Jones said she wants more than a verbal commitment.

We can look at a history forever, but at the end of the day if something is not in writing, and you know as well as I know, it means absolutely nothing, she said. Thats my concern. Ive had that concern all along, and I still have that concern.

Ultimately, the councils planning and economic development committee on Thursday unanimously agreed to send legislation to transfer public land for the arena to the full council for a possible vote on Tuesday. Jones is not a voting member of the three-member committee.

There appeared to be some confusion after the meeting about whether the council committee sent the legislation to the full council with a recommendation for approval.

Councilwoman Mary Sheffield, a member of the committee, said the committee was not making a recommendation for or against the land transfer and that she has not decided how she would vote on Tuesday.

But Councilman Gabe Leland, chairman of the committee, had a different view of the committees vote.

Concussion keeping Franzen out of Olympics

Johan Franzen will be tough to replace for Sweden, as his six goals and 15 points in 24 international games will attest. (Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Team Sweden will be short a Mule when it heads to Sochi next month.

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen is suffering from concussion symptoms forcing his removal from the Olympic roster on Thursday afternoon.

Its a big loss for the Swedes, whose status among the favorites looks shakier every day as injuries (Henrik Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg) and slumps (Daniel Sedin, Loui Eriksson) slow their top forwards.

Johan is unique. Hes a tank who will stop at nothing, who has good hockey sense and great hands, Swedish coach Per Mrts said.

Mrts added that he wasnt sure yet who would draw in for the Swedes because of those other lingering injury issues.

No, I do not know yet, he said. I want to hear how Henrik [Sedin] and [Zetterber] are before we take the next guy.

There are a few NHL options for the spot:

Patric Hornqvist: The veteran winger has 10 goals and 27 points in 50 games for the Nashville Predators. He has a big body that allows him to play a similar role to what would have been asked of Franzen and he has considerable national team experience on his resume. The one problem: he has just one assist to show for his past 13 games with Tre Kroner. If hes slotted deeper on the depth chart, he might be the safest pick.

Marcus Johansson: The young Washington forward has never played for the national side, but does have experience at the World Juniors where he served as captain of the 2010 team. Hes quick, versatile and a terrific playmaker (26 assists in 53 games with the Caps) and has proven chemistry with teammate Nicklas Backstrom.

Red Sox Prospects Flying Under Radar Could Turn Heads In 2014 (Photos)

One thing has become clear recently: The Boston Red Sox minor league system is stacked.

ESPNs Keith Law released his minor league system rankings this week, and the Red Sox ranked fifth among Major League Baseballs 30 teams trailing only the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs. According to Law, the Red Sox have an excellent top 10 prospects list and overall are very deep, particularly in the starting pitching department.

Law also released a top 100 prospects list this week, and the Red Sox were well-represented. Xander Bogaerts was ranked the No. 2 prospect in baseball behind Twins farmhand Byron Buxton, and Henry Owens (42), Jackie Bradley Jr. (51), Garin Cecchini (53), Blake Swihart (56), Mookie Betts (61) and Matt Barnes (89) also appeared on the list.

A lot of Red Sox fans probably are familiar with those names by now, but some other, lesser-known prospects certainly look primed for a big 2014 season. Perhaps those under-the-radar prospects someday will land on one of Laws lists.

Check out the link below for 10 under-the-radar Red Sox prospects who could break out in 2014.

Red zoners apply to Govt for extension

Residents still living in Christchurch's red zone have just three days left to leave their homes.

Those who want to stay have to apply to the Government for an extension, and if granted could be forced to pay a penalty fee to the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority.

Laurie Osborne has lived in the area with his wife, Patricia, for 54 years. He says it is virtually like "camping but with a roof over [their] heads".

They have been told to take their piled-up belongings and be out by Friday.

Mr and Mrs Osborne have running water and electricity but no sewerage. Instead they've paid $11,000 for a portaloo at the end of the driveway.

Mrs Osbourne says "it's clean, tidy and convenient and better than a hole in the ground".

They are waiting for a new house to be built in Amberley, which has already delayed by three months, so they've applied to CERA for an extension. But will they get it?

"What's another 10 weeks when you have had 1150 days?"

Nearby, Iddo and Vrouwkje Bongers received a red-zone extension until the end of May. Any longer and they will have to pay a penalty fee.

The Government has already provided extensions to red zoners but their patience is running out.Mr and Mrs Osborne are waiting for one last reprieve or will be forced out.

David Ortiz’s Contract Situation Should Be Handled By Boston Red Sox Soon

David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox are nearing that bridge again.

The Red Sox dont need to make a decision right now regarding Ortizs contract, which expires after the 2014 season. But the slugger is seeking a multiyear deal, and the club should consider offering an extension sooner rather than later.

Ortiz said Sunday that while hed like to retire as a member of the Red Sox, its possible that he could play for another team in 2015 and beyond. Thats a pretty substantial demand for a designated hitter who will turn 39 after this season, but the Red Sox would be wise to lock up Ortiz this winter to avoid any potential distractions in 2014.

The Red Sox already are facing a difficult decision regarding Jon Lester, who, like Ortiz, is a free agent after this year. Lester could be the best pitcher available on the free-agent market next offseason, and the Red Sox certainly will need to pony up some cash to keep the lefty around, even though he indicated last week that hed accept a hometown discount. You can bet that Lesters future will continue to be a talking point for as long as he remains unsigned or until he signs elsewhere, and it certainly wont do the Red Sox any favors to have Ortizs uncertain future hanging over their heads as well.

Ortiz, who is entering the second year of a two-year contract he signed last offseason, typically is outspoken, and its part of what makes him such a fascinating athlete. Big Papi always is willing to say whats on his mind, and while thats refreshing in an age when so many athletes go by the book, it also means that his next contract could be a conversation topic for the entire season if he doesnt sign an extension this offseason. It isnt exactly the end of the world, but extending Ortiz now rather than next offseason will help keep the focus on on-field matters.

The 2013 Red Sox showed an incredible ability to avoid distractions, which was a stark contrast from 2011 and 2012, when off-the-field drama generated plenty of headlines. Ortizs impending free agency might not threaten the status quo too much, but its a side bar with the potential to do more harm than good.

Obviously, there are advantages to waiting until next offseason to re-sign Ortiz. While the 38-year-old is coming off a strong 2013 campaign that was capped by a historic World Series performance, he will be another year older and its reasonable to expect some regression at some point. The Red Sox might want to wait to see how Ortiz fares this year his 18th big league season before making a potentially sizable financial commitment. After all, Ortizs value is extremely high right now because of his 2013 performance, so waiting could save the Red Sox a few bucks.

When you get right down to it, though, a contract extension for Ortiz should be inevitable. He has become more than just a feared hitter in the middle of the Red Sox order. He is the face of the franchise, and perhaps even the face of Major League Baseball. Those factors should be trumped by on-field production at the negotiating table, but letting Ortiz walk away over a few extra dollars would have serious repercussions.

The Red Sox might need to pay more to lock up Ortiz now, even though Boston would be competing with 29 other teams next offseason for his services. Its an investment worth making, though, as it will only ensure a smoother future for all parties involved.

Central Red Devils capture EM Class C cheerleading title

BANGOR, Maine When the Central High School cheerleading team is performing, there are 20 girls dancing, jumping and tumbling around the mat.

While that means there is more potential for a catastrophic mistake, the Red Devils instead showed Saturday afternoon that there is strength in their considerable numbers.

Central of Corinth demonstrated energy, precision and overall cohesiveness while taking home the Maine Principals Association Eastern Maine Class C cheerleading championship at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Red Devils racked up 127.4 points to register a comfortable victory over runner-up Narraguagus of Harrington, which scored 113.3 points, and third-place Houlton (109.8).

So much could go wrong, but we practice so much, said Central senior co-captain Melyssa Prescott.

We have a lot of different stunts this year, like our waterfalls, she added. We use everyone in our pyramid and not a lot of teams do it.

Sumner of East Sullivan (108.8), Orono (106.4) and Dexter (102.7) were the other three teams to earn spots in the state championships, which are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Augusta Civic Center.

The other scores were: Bucksport 101, Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 99, Washington Academy of East Machias 90.5, Calais 87.9, Penquis of Milo 84, Lee Academy 83.8 and George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill 54.

More than 2,500 fans turned out to watch the days three competitions in Classes B, C and D.

Central, directed by co-coaches Cristy Strout and Whitney Susee, won the first regional cheering championship for the school. The Red Devils, who tuned up for the Eastern Maine competition by winning the Penobscot Valley Conference crown a week earlier, will try to win their second state championship in three years.

Red Storm top Butler for third-straight win

INDIANAPOLIS Butlers first four home games as a member of the Big East Conference had each gone to overtime.

St. Johns saw to it that wouldnt happen again.

JaKarr Sampson scored 20 points and the Red Storm rolled to a 69-52 win on Saturday, St. Johns first win outside of New York City this season.

I thought this was a good win for our team in a tough environment, St. Johns coach Steve Lavin said. Its no secret weve had our struggles in January and to open this conference season.

I think today we took a step in the right direction.

Rysheed Jordan added 16 points and DAngelo Harrison scored 12 for the Red Storm (12-8, 2-5), who have won three in a row and followed Thursdays home win over Seton Hall with its first true road win of the season. St. Johns two victories away from campus had both been at Brooklyns Barclays Center.

The Bulldogs had made extra sessions a part of their first season in the Big East. But their efforts to rally on Saturday were done in by a woeful second half.

Butler (11-9, 1-7) was just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from the field in the second half after scorching the Red Storm for 61.9 percent shooting (13-of-21) in the first half.

I felt if we could force a faster tempo, our deeper bench would help us, Lavin said.

Khyle Marshall had 16 points and Kellen Dunham scored 13 for the Bulldogs, whose streak of 18 seasons with at least 10 home wins is in jeopardy. The Bulldogs are 7-4 this year with four home games remaining.

Public Health officials told to be on alert

THE PUBLIC Health Ministry has instructed its officials to be on the alert for violent incidents ahead of the February 2 election.

Dr Narong Sahametapat, the ministry's permanent secretary, yesterday ordered the heads of provincial public health offices in 18 provinces to be on the look out for clashes and be ready to provide emergency medical attention to the injured.

Separately, the Thai Red Cross Society yesterday warned medical workers against using the Red Cross symbol when joining PDRC rallies, saying that the misuse of the emblem would violate the society's universal principle of impartiality and humanitarianism.

The Red Cross issued its warning on Faceook, saying that people from all walks of life have the right to express their political opinion, but they should not use the Red Cross emblem as it would create a misunderstanding about the Thai Red Cross Society's principle of impartiality. Members of the public are also encouraged to call the 1664 hotline in case they find the Red Cross flag being misused.

The Red Cross move came after a group of medical workers joined a PDRC march from Siam Discovery Centre to the Asoke intersection, with some of them holding Red Cross flags.

Meanwhile, the Public Health Ministry's deputy permanent secretary, Dr Wachira Pengjuntr, said yesterday he had been monitoring the rallies led by the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) in 18 provinces and so far, no casualties had been reported, although in Phatthalung, public health officials have had to move to another office.

"Some provincial public health offices have been shut, while some officials have moved to work in other places. The protesters are just making symbolic moves," he said.

Dr Narong Apikulwanich, chief of the ministry's emergency medical services operation, said his agency has not received any reports of violence during the PDRC rally to shut down several government offices in Bangkok, such as the Government Savings Bank and Export-Import Bank.

As many as 272 people have been injured and four killed in violent clashes since December 26. Up to 25 of the injured are still being treated in hospital. Dr Panpimol Wipulakorn, deputy director of the Mental Health Department, said the ongoing political turmoil has been stressful for many people, especially those living near the protest sites and those closely following the news reports.

Echoing the Red Cross warning, Medical Council of Thailand president Dr Somsak Lohlekha has issued a warning for medical workers to properly express their political opinions after a group of medical workers who joined a PDRC protest held up a banner reading "I left patients to overthrow Yingluck".

The quirky number was a collaboration between Ms Clarke and designer Daniela Stephanie.

"She's done a fantastic job. We were after something that was sexy but demure, something chic and classic," the glowing brunette said as light ricocheted off her diamond bling.

COLUMN By DICK VANO'LINDA

Two days before Christmas, the Red Lion boys' basketball team lost a game.

The Lions haven't lost one since their 50-45 setback to Central York.

Red Lion is riding a 10-game winning streak as the York-Adams League heads into the final third of its season.

The victories during the run include a signature triumph over York High, a team that Red Lion hadn't beaten since the 2009-10 season.

The Lions count on balanced scoring and a defense that is ranked second in the league.

Three Red Lion players are averaging in double figures. Mike Fox, a senior, is the team leader at 17.8 points a game. He's followed by Stone McCreary (11.0) and Evan Miller (10.5). Fox, according to York Dispatch records, has 927 career points.

McCreary and Miller have combined for 66 3-point baskets.

Defensively, the Lions are holding opponents to 43.1 points a game. Jason Rebuck, who is averaging 7.2 points game, is a strong rebounder and defender in the post and Head Coach Steve Schmehl lauded the defense of guard Austin Huson following the Lions' 62-40 victory over Dover.

Emilia Clarke Says She’s Never Been Blonde in Real Life, Flirts With Jared Leto at SAGs 2014

Emilia Clarke doesn't just command three fire-breathing dragons -- she also commands attention on the red carpet. Radiant in a rose-gold gown at the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards on Saturday, Jan. 18, the Game of Thrones beauty turned lots of heads -- one of which belonged to Dallas Buyers Club nominee Jared Leto.

PHOTOS: What the stars wore to the 2014 SAG Awards

The two were introduced by Giuliana Rancic after Clarke's red carpet interview. "I haven't seen your show, but I know people are obsessed with it and say it's absolutely amazing," he said, wrapping her in a big hug like they were old friends.

"See, I know your band, and I've seen your movie," she replied. Then, as she turned to say goodbye, Leto pulled her closer and said he wasn't quite done with her yet.

PHOTOS: The best and worst SAGs dresses ever

"I haven't finished here. There's work yet to be done," he quipped, fixing a sexy gaze on the gorgeous HBO actress. "Have you looked into her eyes? I mean, they're absolutely insane."

Sensing chemistry between the two, Rancic got the camera crew to zoom in on Clarke's face. "I'm blushing!" the GOT standout said, laughing.

PHOTOS: Big awards show snubs

Prior to the cute exchange, Clarke chatted with Rancic about her dark chestnut hair -- a marked contrast from the white-blonde locks she sports on Game of Thrones. "I've never been blonde [in real life]," she confessed, citing a bad experience with highlights when she was 12.

Asked whether she has more fun as a blonde or as a brunette, Clarke laughed. "Well, I don't think my character is the best example of blondes having fun, so I think I have more fun," she quipped.
