Red Cross helping more this winter with increased emergencies

FRANKLIN COUNTY >> The American Red Cross has been busier than ever over the last few months as cold weather and several fires have sent families looking for emergency help.

"Our primary purpose is to help our Franklin County residents and our Cumberland County residents with their immediate disaster needs," said Allen White Jr. emergency response specialist. "We want to make sure if they have been displaced, to make sure they have a roof over their heads, to have something to eat or clothing until either they deal with insurance companies or other types of agencies that can help."

White said Red Cross volunteers have been called out more this winter than past years.

"We have definitely seen an increase in activity this winter," White said. "In the past three weeks, we responded to six fires within Franklin County alone."

The Red Cross, a non-profit that provides disaster relief, heath services and international work, is summoned by emergency and fire personnel to fire scenes if they deem it necessary for residents to get assistance.

White said the local Red Cross has about 30 active disaster volunteers who take turns every week being on call when disasters, such as extreme flooding or hurricanes happen.

"In Franklin County, we have been quite fortunate," White said. "Other areas have seen things that are more extreme."

Carolyn Blackshire, Chambersburg, is a disaster team captain and has volunteered for four years.

Red Springs narrow win inches Devils closer to Fairmont

RED SPRINGS Keeping pace with an adversary that rarely falters is never easy, but Red Springs is doing its best this season.

Fairmonts surprising loss to Whiteville last week re-opened the door for the Red Devils in the Three Rivers Conference championship hunt and on Monday night, they took advantage.

Tavion Atkinsons late steal and layup followed by four free throws in the final 15.4 seconds from Jared Foster helped Red Springs seal a 55-50 victory over the confident Wolfpack, a win that puts the Red Devils within striking distance of first place with two games remaining in the regular season.

If Red Springs (15-6, 10-2) can win out against West Columbus and St. Pauls, Fairmont (15-5, 10-1) would need to sweep South Columbus, East Columbus and South Robeson to win its fourth consecutive league title outright.

A loss by the Golden Tornadoes would mean co-conference champions even though Fairmont holds the tiebreaker for playoff seeding purposes thanks to three wins over the Red Devils this season.

Being able to beat Whiteville is a good measuring stick for where were at as a team, but weve got to be able to find a way to beat Fairmont, Red Springs coach Glenn Patterson said. Maybe South Columbus can give those guys a run when they play.

Following a 12-point loss loss to Fairmont on Jan. 7, Patterson accurately predicted the Golden Tornadoes would have a hiccup somewhere on the schedule the rest of the way. But the Red Devils didnt hold up their end of the bargain, falling again by double digits the next time the two rivals met at Fairmont on Feb. 4.

I knew it would happen, Patterson said. I think its mental more than anything. We allow (Fairmont) to take our heads out of the ballgame. Were still in the race and Im proud of this team for continuing to fight.

Mondays win was a gritty one as Red Springs pulled ahead by 12 in the fourth quarter before Whiteville (15-4, 8-4) closed the gap to within three on Brandon Bests 25-footer with 22 seconds to play. Forced to foul Foster, Red Springs top scorer this season, the Wolfpack never got closer as the senior point guard drained every free throw he attempted over the final two possessions.

I challenge them not to quit when we got the lead, Patterson said. I just told them that it was time to close, time to finish. We got the ball in Jareds hands and he knocked down some shots when we had to have them.

Syrian Arab Red Crescent trucks stand in the besieged neighbourhoods of Homs to supply humanitarian aid, February 8, 2014. Reuters pic, February 10, 2014.Aid teams evacuated hundreds of exhausted civilians from besieged Homs city yesterday, as Syria's regime and rebels again accused each other of violating a truce ahead of new peace talks.

The evacuation of around 600 of the 3,000 trapped people came as representatives from both sides converged on Geneva.

Yesterday's evacuation was the second in three days after a UN-brokered truce for besieged districts of Syria's third city began on Friday.

Five men were killed when one besieged district was hit by mortar fire during yesterday's evacuation, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

They were the latest deaths in a nearly three-year conflict that has killed 136,000 people and displaced millions.

The Observatory and the Syrian Red Crescent said some 600 people had been evacuated from the Old City of Homs yesterday.

The Red Crescent said on Facebook "around 600 people evacuated today, registration is still ongoing".

"We managed to get 60 food parcels & 1500Kg of flour inside old city."

The Observatory said 611 were brought out "210 women, 180 children, 91 men over 55 years old and 130 young men who surrendered to Syrian authorities under UN supervision," adding the men "will be released soon".

Hollande to get super-red carpet treatment on US state visit

French president Franois Hollande: reportedly planning to voice concerns about data protection and the tax optimisation schemes of major internet companies such as Google during his US visit. Photograph: EPA/Mohamed Messara

America is expected to roll out the red carpet for Franois Hollande

today as the president becomes the first French leader to make a state visit for almost two decades.

The three-day visit, which includes a black-tie dinner at the White House and a trip in the presidential plane Air Force One, is seen as evidence of the close ties between the US and France.

As well as talks with Barack Obama, who has hosted only six state dinners since he took office in 2009, Hollande will visit Silicon Valley and have lunch with the heads of key technology and social networking companies.

He will also tour the Francophile president Thomas Jeffersons house in Charlottesville, Virginia. However, unusually, he will not address Congress. Both the White House and the lyse insist this is due to a lack of time.

Google In San Francisco, Hollande will meet Eric Schmidt, the head of Google, and Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, as well as representatives from Twitter and Mozilla.

Hollande is reportedly planning to voice concerns about data protection and the tax optimisation schemes of major internet companies such as Google. Last week Google was reportedly hit with a 1 billion bill in unpaid taxes by the French fiscal authorities.

Officials say, however, that relations between the two countries are excellent, despite revelations last year that American intelligence agencies had been snooping on the French and other Europeans.

And the criticism will not be all one way. Hollande is sure to face hard questions from Silicon Valley firms about Frances high taxes for companies and what are seen as business-unfriendly economic policies.

10 Red Sox Questions to honor Truck Day

Truck Day 2014 is upon us.

Let the cliches roll.

Next stop, Fort Myers.

It's been a landmark week in sports. We've enjoyed the Kitten Bowl, the Puppy Bowl, the Super Bowl, Round One of the Beanpot, the start of the Olympics, bad toilets in Russia, a 2011 Stanley Cup Finals rematch and the continuing saga of Tankapalooza.

All of these monumental events merely served as opening acts for the week's ultimate athletic signature moment on Saturday: Truck Day 2014 at Fenway Park.

Truck Day means we've survive the brutal offseason, or at least that untenable gap between the end of the Patriots' season and the first hint of baseball.

The Red Sox are defending World Series Cup champions. Red Sox fans have until Opening Day to take advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime, and walk away from the team following its most spectacular season since Ban Johnson began the American League. Leaving on top is very, very enticing. But sadly, at least for sad sacks like myself, it's not a real option. Crack, carbs and cigarettes are all infinitely harder to quit than the Red Sox, even they aren't nearly as harmful at times.

Several players, including Xander Bogaerts, Jon Lester and Will Middlebrooks, are already working out in Fort Myers. Truck Day gives New Englanders a nice, clean way to mark the unofficial start of the new baseball calendar year. It's more welcomed during a winter that's been markedly more brutal than most. It also provides the Red Sox with another chance to demonstrate their ability to turn just about anything into a publicity stunt, including the transportation of athletic gear and clothing from Boston to Florida.

Last year's Truck Day carried the slogan: "Big Things Ahead." Big indeed. On this Truck Day Eve, the Red Sox have many unanswered questions heading into the 2014 season. Here are 10 for starters:

Top 10 Hottest Redheads in the World – Brosome

Oh man, redheads! Theres just something about them, right? When theyre not hot, boy theyre really not hot at all, but when theyre hot, you need to look out! Red hair may be one of the hardest hues to pull off, but when someone gets red right theres nothing better!!!

With their fiery looks, cute freckles and stunning light skin, ginger hotties are that rare breed of beauty capable of making even the most stunning blonds and brunettes seem pretty normal. Bruce Springsteen once sang (and I happen to agree with him): Brunettes are fine, man, and blondes are fun, but when it comes to getting a job done I need a red headed woman.

So to honor these ravaging beauties, weve put together this kick ass list with the top ten hottest redheads in the worlds right now. We havent included Jessica Rabbit or other redheads popular years ago, just todays awesome redheads. Lets start with #10.

Best known for her roles in The Wrestler, Across the Universe and for being the crazy vampire goddess in True Blood, this girl is one of the most beautiful redheads on TV. She used to be in a creepy relationship with Marilyn Manson and we didnt liked that at all, but last year they broke up and then she even revealed shes Bisexual so one more reason to love her and feature her in our list, right?

Im pretty sure most of you dont even have a clue who she is and all I can tell you is that shes a young English model who took the word by storm with her unique ginger looks. Shes been featured in numerous magazines across Europe and shes still in college so if you ever imagined a perfect girlfriend from Europe, she might be the one. She looks a bit weird in a couple of photos youll find with her, like a smoking hot alien or something but shes just.. amazing!

Husqvarna Red Bull team goes global with WIL Sport

Mangakinos Kayne Lamont is going from strength to strength.

Fresh from his sensational MX2 (250cc) class win at the 53rd annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville just over a week ago, Lamonts Husqvarna Red Bull New Zealand Race Team is thrilled to report they have secured an additional high-profile sponsor.

Internationally-recognised Kiwi company WIL Sport Management Limited, owned by West Aucklands Phil and Cheryl London, has signed on to support the motocross race team, a further diversification of the assistance they already offer New Zealand sporting endeavours, after previously supporting Kiwi motorcycle road-race heroes overseas such as Orewas Avalon Biddle, Rangioras Jake Lewis and West Aucklands Connor London.

WIL Sport Management already backs Kiwi athletes in sports as diverse as ice hockey, gymnastics, netball and diving, for example.

"We will receive massive support with our travel expenses from WIL Sport Management," said Husqvarna Red Bull New Zealand Race Team manager Stu Lamont.

"Im over the moon about it. It takes a lot of pressure off me and the team. It is a real boost for the team," he said.

The race team is on the road this week and heading to the first of four rounds in the New Zealand Motocross Championships near Timaru on Saturday, with rounds to follow in Tokoroa, Pukekohe and Taupo. The team then packs up and heads across the Tasman to race the 10-round Australian Motocross Championships as well, starting in March.

"We will undergo some re-branding in the next week or so, and should have updated graphics on the bike before round two (of the New Zealand series) in two weeks time," said Lamont.

"The team has amazing support from all its sponsors and we cant think enough individuals like Workshop Graphics owner Darryl Blom, Patrick Stafford of Husqvarna New Zealand, Red Bulls Brendan Thomas and Reece McLeod from and Fox and Shift apparel. They have been awesome for us."

From the WIL Sport Management perspective, the new arrangement fits in well with their strategies.

A BRISTOL man has joined the latest emergency response to flooding on the Somerset Levels.

Roy Marshall from Henleaze joined a British Red Cross crew in a second 4x4 vehicle sent from the charitys international warehouse in Warmley to support with transferring people through flood water.

The Landrover Defender is in addition to the 4x4 Unimog vehicle the charity dispatched last week to transport fuel and supplies through the flooded back roads to the cut-off village of Muchelney.

In total the Red Cross has a team of six volunteers in three 4x4 vehicles on the ground in the Somerset Levels as part of the multi-agency response aimed at keeping residents safe.

Three additional volunteers have been dispatched to assist the authorities with the setting up of a rest centre at North Petherton Bowling Club, on the edge of the Somerset Levels.

More volunteers are being placed on standby to continue the response tonight and into tomorrow, with more bad weather on the way.

Seeing RED on Friday

Everone urged to wear red, Syracuse building will be lit up in red

Wear red on Friday, as part of awareness of women's heart disease

To do on Friday: wear red.

It's the American Heart Association's effort to raise awareness of heart disease as the #1 killer of women.

Many Central New York businesses urge their staffers to be involved (including CNY Central, where you'll see a lot of red in our broadcasts on Friday).

Many Syracuse buildings will also be illuminated in red, to raise awareness.

Kathryn Ruscitto, who heads up St. Joseph's Hospital, and also heads up the local effort for American Heart, says you can also start prevention by knowing your numbers: cholesterol, blood pressure and BMI (Body Mass Index) and doing something about those numbers. (Her interview from Saturday's Weekend Today in CNY is attached)

Red Light Secrets Museum opens in Amsterdam

In this photo taken Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, the entrance of the 'Red Light Secrets' prostitution museum is seen, right, in Amsterdam. On any given evening, thousands of tourists stroll down the narrow streets of Amsterdam's famed Red Light District, gawking at ladies in lingerie who work behind windows, making a living selling sex for money. Now a small educational museum is opening in heart of the district that aims to show reality from the other side of the glass. AMSTERDAM (AP) On any given evening, thousands of tourists stroll down the narrow canal-side streets of Amsterdam's famed Red Light District, gawking at ladies in lingerie who work behind windows, making a living selling sex for money. Now a small educational museum is opening Thursday in the heart of the district to show reality from the other side of the glass.

RED LIGHT SECRETS

Organizer Melcher de Wind says the Red Light Secrets museum is for those who want to learn more about how the area works without actually visiting a prostitute. It's located in a former brothel, one of the narrow buildings typical of Amsterdam.

Visitors enter the museum by passing a hologram of a beckoning prostitute. Then the displays attempt to place prostitutes as part of society. There's a short film showing the many people who work with the prostitutes: cleaning or repairing their rooms, doing their laundry, or running over to their windows with coffee or food during shifts.

Prostitutes rent windows on a half-day basis and can work shifts that are 11 hours long, six days a week. They spend a lot of time waiting for customers. In their free time, they visit local hairdressers, nail salons and clothing shops.

There's also a nursery school in the heart of the Red Light District, right next to the windows. In one scene in the film, a middle-aged prostitute in red leather receives an afternoon visit from her grade-school daughter.

A LONG HISTORY IN AMSTERDAM

The museum makes only a passing attempt to document the history of prostitution tolerance in Amsterdam starting from the 16th century, when it was a port city flush with wealth from the spice trade and authorities turned a blind eye when sailors went ashore looking for women. Or during the Napoleonic Wars, when prostitutes first began to have mandatory medical checkups to combat venereal disease among soldiers.

The museum focuses on the era since 2000, when prostitution became legal in the Netherlands. Since then the city has been struggling it says with some success to eradicate pimps and human trafficking.

Clam, Corn and Jalapeno Fritters

Fennel Kraut Dogs

Packed with heat and flavor, these fritters can spice up even the longest of games. Theyre a great way to offer something new in a sea of chips and dip. To go for the extra point, pair them with a roasted red pepper aioli and serve with a fennel and red onion slaw. CLAM, CORN AND JALAPEO FRITTERS Courtesy of Chef Gus Nations of Le Gourmet Factory Cooking School.

Drain clams. Combine the clams, corn, jalapeo, garlic and the green and Spanish onions. Beat the eggs with the milk and add to the clam mixture. Combine the dry ingredients and stir into the wet mixture. Mix until all lumps are removed. Heat the oil to 375 degrees. Spoon two tablespoon-sized dollops into the oil. Cook until golden and fritter floats to the surface. Serves: about 3 dozen.

Rub the red pepper with one tablespoon of canola oil and roast in a 425-degree oven until the skin blisters. Remove and allow it to cool enough to handle.

Remove the skin, hull and seeds. Combine the garlic, shallot, egg yolks, the vinegars and the lemon juice. Using an immersion blender, process the mixture until completely smooth.

Combine the oils and while continuing to process, slowly drizzle the oils into the yolk mixture. Add in the red pepper and process until well and completely combined. Season with the salt and pepper and adjust, as necessary, to taste.

Johan Franzen pulls out of Sochi Olympics. Who draws in for Team Sweden?

Johan Franzen will be tough to replace for Sweden, as his six goals and 15 points in 24 international games will attest. (Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

Team Sweden will be short a Mule when it heads to Sochi next month.

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen is suffering from concussion symptoms forcing his removal from the Olympic roster on Thursday afternoon.

Its a big loss for the Swedes, whose status among the favorites looks shakier every day as injuries (Henrik Sedin, Henrik Zetterberg) and slumps (Daniel Sedin, Loui Eriksson) slow their top forwards.

Johan is unique. Hes a tank who will stop at nothing, who has good hockey sense and great hands, Swedish coach Per Mrts said.

Mrts added that he wasnt sure yet who would draw in for the Swedes because of those other lingering injury issues.

No, I do not know yet, he said. I want to hear how Henrik [Sedin] and [Zetterber] are before we take the next guy.

There are a few NHL options for the spot:

Patric Hornqvist: The veteran winger has 10 goals and 27 points in 50 games for the Nashville Predators. He has a big body that allows him to play a similar role to what would have been asked of Franzen and he has considerable national team experience on his resume. The one problem: he has just one assist to show for his past 13 games with Tre Kroner. If hes slotted deeper on the depth chart, he might be the safest pick.

Marcus Johansson: The young Washington forward has never played for the national side, but does have experience at the World Juniors where he served as captain of the 2010 team. Hes quick, versatile and a terrific playmaker (26 assists in 53 games with the Caps) and has proven chemistry with teammate Nicklas Backstrom.
