Green Kiwi tux heads to Oscars red carpet

The wife of an Oscar winner and the daughter of Cambodian refugees met on a Wairarapa farm yesterday over an unlikely object - a tuxedo made partly of recycled bottles, to be worn by a vampire.

When Suzy Amis-Cameron, wife of blockbuster director James Cameron, was told in a Los Angeles meeting that the winner of her eco-fashion competition was from New Zealand she was amazed: "The connection couldn't be more meaningful than having the winner be from our new home."

The new menswear section of Amis-Cameron's ecologically conscious fashion design competition, Red Carpet Green Dress, was won by Hallenstein Brothers' designer Jomnarn Dul, whose parents fled to New Zealand from Cambodia via a Thai refugee camp.

There, her mother sewed clothes for people who had fled with nothing; yesterday, the Aucklander was hosted by Amis-Cameron at her Wairarapa farm to celebrate the success, which will see Dul's design worn on the red carpet at next Sunday's Oscars by actor Kellan Lutz, who played vampire Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies.

Former model and actress Amis-Cameron, 52, founded the design competition five years ago, inspired by her husband's box office record-breaking film, Avatar, which has a strong conservation message.

"We were in one of our brain-mash pow-wows and someone said, why don't we do a dress-design competition?"

The motivation was fundraising for her conservation-oriented, not-for-profit MUSE School in California, founded with sister Rebecca Amis nine years ago, which provides scholarships to half its students.

Each year since, the winning gown, made of sustainably produced fabrics, has been worn by an actress on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

Amis-Cameron, a mother of three children with Cameron, as well as one from a previous marriage and one from one of Cameron's previous marriage, tries to dress her family in fabrics which were neither toxic for the planet, nor for their bodies, and made without "destroying lives" in sweat-shops.

"It's a much, much bigger issue for me, it's not just a pretty dress to wear on the red carpet . . . Everybody wears clothes."

Red Sox will lean on Lester, deep rotation

Red Sox starter Jon Lester delivers a pitch during Thursday's practice in Fort Myers, Fla. AP PHOTO

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- The "no vacancy" sign is up for the Red Sox rotation.

With five veteran starters, the World Series champions have no openings. But if they did, there would be several outstanding young candidates competing for them -- and others not too far away.

Coming off a brilliant postseason, Jon Lester leads the starting staff after pitching a career-high 213 1-3 innings. Clay Buchholz, John Lackey, Jake Peavy and Felix Doubront complete the group that should have little trouble weathering Ryan Dempster's decision not to play in 2014 for physical and personal reasons.

Brandon Workman heads the young group after a year in which he wasn't even in the major league camp yet went 6-3 with the Red Sox. Manager John Farrell showed faith by having him pitch the eighth inning -- he retired St. Louis in order -- of Boston's clinching Game 6 of the World Series.

The more pitching, the better.

"I don't think any of us have any false confidence or an embarrassment of riches because we've seen that pitching is a game of attrition," Farrell said Friday. "We went through 20-something relievers last year so we were fortunate, with the exception of maybe Clay's situation, we were relatively healthy in the rotation. But that can change in a moment's notice."

Like when Dempster surprised management about two weeks ago with his decision not to play the final year of his contract.

So the Red Sox added left-hander Chris Capuano to work in the bullpen and as insurance for the rotation.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS) -Another day of workouts in the books on this Saturday down here at Red Sox Spring Training in Fort Myers.

Here are some notes and observations:

CHRIS CAPUANO

Chris Capuano was on the field with his new teammates after signing a one year contract and passing his physical.

Capuano was born and raised in West Springfield and graduated from Cathedral High School. He will wear number 55. He says he grew up a Sox fan and was devastated by the 1986 World Series at the age of 8.

Chris Capuano. (WBZ-TV)

Amazingly, the only park that the 31-year-old hasnt pitched in as a big leaguer is Fenway. He said he did pitch there once when he played for Massachusetts in a Mass. vs Connecticut All-Star game when he was in high school. Hes expected to be extended as a starter in the spring, but will be used as a third lefty out of the bullpen, at least initially once the season begins.

The starting staff could definitely be as good as any Ive been on, said Lackey, entering his 12th season. We were the last ones standing last year, so that says something.

Lackey missed the 2012 season following Tommy John surgery, had a 3.52 ERA and then allowed one run in 62/3 innings of Bostons 6-1 win that clinched its third championship in 10 years.

Red Raiders to play in Brooks Wallace Memorial

The Texas Tech baseball team will play Oral Roberts this weekend in the memorial series for former Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace.

Wallace is one of four Red Raiders to have his number retired by the team, according to a news release from Tech athletics, and died at age 27 after a battle with leukemia.

Tech junior pitcher Dominic Moreno said he has a friend who is dealing with leukemia and the after effects of it, and it will probably be an emotional weekend for him.

You get up for morning workouts and youre like I dont want to be here, I dont want to do the running, I dont want to do this, and hes gone through more than any of us have, Moreno said. Hes kind of a guy that I use for motivation every single day.

The Red Raiders enter the series ranked No. 28 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers poll after beating No. 3 Indiana three times in last weekends four-game series.

Sophomore utility player Eric Gutierrez said the series win against Indiana was great for momentum, but the players are trying to just take it one game at a time.

Everybody is pumped for this weekend, Gutierrez said. I mean, were just taking it day by day and weve been working as hard as we worked in the offseason.

In the series against Indiana, the Red Raiders were strong offensively, scoring 23 runs in their three wins. The one loss on opening day was the only time Tech struggled at the plate, giving Moreno zero runs in his start.

Moreno credited the Indiana pitcher in the opening game, but said he thought all of the hitters throughout the lineup stepped up in the next three games.

No matter how good your offense is, Moreno said, youre always going to run into a buzzsaw.

When we think of smokin hot Hollywood blondes, Molly Sims ranks high on the list. But the model, actress and jewelry designer just underwent a major hair transformation, trading her signature blonde locks for a fiery red hue. And by just underwent, we mean that Sims literally had the mane change a few hours ago; we were there, and we have the exclusive first images of the stars sexy new look.

So what inspired the dramatic makeover? I wanted to be vibrant, and I wanted a change, Sims tells PEOPLE. I wanted to do something bold. I thought about cutting my hair, but then I was like, Everyone is cutting their hair! I wanted to do something different and to look different in clothes.

And yes, Sims is already making a shopping list for outfits to offset her new do. Im excited to wear different colors. I was always doing cream and gold with the blonde. Now it will be nice to wear something black, and the red gives you that color, she says. I think Im going to buy myself a new jacket. A little Helmut Lang, maybe. Its like how a nice a new pair of heels or boots changes how you walk. Hair changes changes how you feel. Its so important for confidence.

Speaking of confidence, Sims was so ready to make the change, she only gave her husband a heads up. He was like Are you sure? And I was like, Either that or Im going to to cut it. So he voted for the color. Regardless, hes sleeping with a different woman. Shes also curious to see how her son Brooks, 19 months, will react to her new do. I just FaceTimed with him as a blonde, and Im a little concerned he wont know who I am, but hell know me by my voice.

Though were used to seeing her as a blonde, Sims is a natural brunette and she started off her modeling career with black hair. And like any model, shes sported some styles that she regrets. I did this French braid cornrow that was way too tight, she shares. It was maybe good for an island or on vacation, but thats about it. You could see the lines in my scalp. And Im from the South, so of course I permed. I loved putting all those chemicals in my hair.

Area teams seeking success in girls conference tourney

By WARREN RAPPLEYEA Correspondent

RED BANK CATHOLIC

R ed Bank Catholic (RBC) High

Schools girls basketball team heads into the Shore Conference Tournament as the seventh seed after losing three of its last four games.

The Caseys (15-6) fell to St. John Vianney High School, the top seed in the Shore Conference Tournament (SCT), twice recently. They fell to the Lancers, 55-32, on Feb. 8 and then again on Feb. 17 by a 55-26 score. They also fell to Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, 52-30, on Feb. 6.

In the first contest against St. John Vianney, RBC found itself on the wrong end of a 20-4 tally when the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter. It was a hole that proved too steep to dig out of.

The Rumson-Fair Haven game was a far cry from the teams previous matchup, which was won by the Caseys, 37-33. This time around, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 first-quarter lead. It was 25- 11 at the half thanks to a stifling defense that held Alex Barazotti to just five points. Grace Fallon led the Caseys with eight points.

Prior to the loss against Rumson-Fair Haven, RBC won four straight games, downing Archbishop Malloy High School (New York), Shore Regional High School, Raritan High School and Holmdel High School.

Coach Joe Montanos team scored a win over Monmouth Regional High School (3- 19), 57-26, on Feb. 11. Caitlin Conroy led RBC with 11 points, as 12 Caseys players saw action during the rout.

We have a lot of young players, but our strength is that they play as a team, said Montano, whose team won the SCT last season. The girls have had some very strong games, and theyre learning from their mistakes.

Ryan Dempsters exit adds flexibility

FORT MYERS Ryan Dempsters surprising announcement that hell walk away from $13.25 million and sit out the 2014 season robs the Red Sox of starting pitching depth, but in truth, opens more avenues for improvement.

Dempster decided not to pitch this season because he believed injuries to his neck and groin would keep him from meeting the standards of his 16-year career. He faced an uphill roster climb as it was, with a young Felix Doubront and veteran Jake Peavy the favorites to land the last two spots in the rotation.

Dempster represented a long reliever and spot starter, and there are better ways to spend $13 million, particularly if he ended up pitching as ineffectively as he feared.

And so begins the trickle-down effect of his decision. Here are three areas his absence will impact.

1. The future is now

If the Red Sox suffer an injury in the starting rotation and of the five starters, only ace Jon Lester has exhibited a track record of durability theyll likely turn to youngster Brandon Workman, who opened eyes with his attacking approach in relief last season.

Workman has spent the winter preparing to start, and yesterday said he views himself as a starter long-term, though hell obviously pitch wherever the team wants.

Starting is what Ive done for all except half of last season, Workman said. Its definitely a comfort zone for me, its what I grew up doing, what Ive done on my way through the minor leagues. Id say that is what I see myself as because of the amount Ive done it through my career and my life, but I got comfortable in the bullpen as well. Whatever they decide my role ends up being, I feel comfortable I can get it done.

What becomes interesting is the group behind Workman. Even with the rotation remaining relatively healthy outside of Clay Buchholz last year, the Sox still used 11 starters. Included on that list were Alfredo Aceves, Franklin Morales, and Stephen Wright.

Now imagine those starts being made by some combination of prospects Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa and Drake Britton. Or maybe even Matt Barnes, Anthony Ranaudo and Henry Owens, the best of the next generation.

British Designers Rule The Baftas 2014 Red Carpet

Amy Adams opted for Victoria Beckham, while Lily Allen stepped out in vibrant Vivienne Westwood

Amy Adams wore a Victoria Beckham dress for the Baftas

The Baftas is all about celebrating the best of British talent, so it makes sense that fashion should get a nod as well as the film industry especially since the ceremony takes place slap bang in the middle of London Fashion Week.

This year, some of the biggest names chose British designers to dress them for the red carpet. American Hustle star Amy Adams chose a black Victoria Beckham dress for the ceremony. The minimalist LBD with given a contemporary twist with a sheer cropped overlay, making it a perfect choice for the red carpet.

Meanwhile, Lily Allen turned heads in a vibrant Vivienne Westwood gown. The singer showed off her enviable figure in the eye-popping tangerine and fuchsia dress, which she also expertly clashed with the red carpet.

Blue Jasmine star Sally Hawkins, who was up for the best Supporting Actress award, wore a bespoke Mulberry gown for the evening. The cute pale blue jacquard number was created in collaboration with the actress which is probably why she looks so good in it.

Red Knights win first sectional game in 8 years

MORRISTOWN - To some teams, a first-round playoff game is just a bump on the road toward a district, regional or even a state title.

To the Toronto girls basketball team, the first game was a hurdle that hadn't been cleared in eight years.

On Saturday at Union Local, the Red Knights took a strong leap over the daunting barrier with a 54-51 win over Bellaire St. John in the opening sectional game of the Division IV tournament.

"We came in and knew we had to do something to change the history of our school," said point guard Lexie Berger. "The only way to do that was to win this sectional game."

The Red Knights (12-10) previously topped the Fighting Irish twice in the regular season.

"It's very hard to beat a team three times," said Toronto coach Mallory Blanton said. "That's another goal we had."

Red Storm sweep away Yachtsmen for A West title

Scarborough thundered to an early lead over Falmouth in Wednesday nights A West Championship, then maintained control throughout. In the first five minutes alone, Elizabeth Gross picked up two and Samantha Shoebottom tallied one.

After that, the Red Storm cruised to a 7-0 W.

We told the girls, We need to go out there and pop a few goals in quickly, Scarborough head coach Caitlin Cashman said. Take the wind out of their sails.

The speeches she gives sometimes, Gross said of Cashman, really pump me up. Just go as hard as you can, right off the bat, shut em down.

Scarborough, now 20-0 on the season, advances to Saturday nights state final against Lewiston, who defeated Leavitt/Edward Little 2-0 for the A East crown. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

Cashman didnt expect to beat the Yachtsmen by such a huge margin. We just went out there saying, Take it shift by shift, carry by carry, shoot with a purpose because Falmouth is a gritty, hardworking teamYouve to be able to finish, and [we] were able to finish tonight.

Senior forward Rachel Wallace was also surprised by the Red Storms lopsided victory. Whenever we play Falmouth, they come to play. So I was expecting it to be a bit closer game. Obviously, every team hopes they can win by that much.

Falmouth managed to even out play in the latter part of the first period, generating a handful of solid opportunities as the clock ticked toward zero. Red Storm goalie Devan Kane proved unbeatable, however. The one puck that bounced over her, even appeared to slide in the net, must not have crossed the goal line, as the attendant official waved it off.

Scarborough turned some additional pretty plays themselves, before the first buzzer. Riley McKeown whirled through a spin-move to divide the Falmouth defense in the slot and pull the trigger on a backhander in close. McKeown didnt score just then, but the thrilling display of footwork and puckhandling foreshadowed the dominance her team would exert in the second.

Building a big lead can lull teams into false security, but not Scarborough. Gross felt that she and her roster-mates might have let up here and there but never for long. We might have [relaxed], at some points, but then we just stepped it right back up.

Red algae returning to Lee Co. beaches

LEE COUNTY, FL -

It may not be the most romantic beach setting to look forward to--current weather conditions are expected to push more unsightly red drift algae onto Lee County beaches now through the weekend.

Many seasonal residents say they're prepared to deal with it.

Seasonal resident Diane Vedmore says has she little to complain about.

"Even though it's windy, there's always something to do. On the beach we're finding these gorgeous shells!" Vedmore said.

But it's an activity that could be short-lived.

Scientists expect the combination of looming storm systems and winds pushing toward the coastline to push more red drift algae onto beach shores

"I expect there to be more stranding events and the frequency of those stranding events is probably once every two weeks," Dr. Eric Mildbrandt, SCCF Marine Lab Director.

Researchers at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation are studying the growth and believe the algae is tied to the Lake O fresh water releases from last summer.

"It's a very patchy phenomena so most times you'll find it washed up on one beach but if you just go down the road a mile there may not be any," Milbrandt said.

A Tribe Called Red hits the right buttons with powwow step

REGINA It was just a few years ago DJs NDN, Shub and Bear Witness were holed up in rehearsal session, trying to loop an Aboriginal grass dance into the opening of a dubstep instrumental.

Right away as soon as we heard the two together, we slapped our heads, said Bear Witness. Were remixing dance music with dance music now.

That experiment would become the first live mash-up produced by the DJ collective thats now A Tribe Called Red. Theyre known for revamping electronic tracks, from dubstep to trap and reggaeton, with traditional chanting and drums. Its even being called a new sub-genre: powwow step.

It comes from music and traditions that are very much alive right now, but being exposed to a lot of people who didnt realize that it existed, said Bear Witness. We started doing this for the urban indigenous community, but we didnt expect everybody else to get it.

A Tribe Called Red has since toured all around Canada and the United States, where rave culture and EDM has especially reached mainstream popularity. The group even played festivals in the France and the United Kingdom last year.

I guess were coming at a moment where people are ready to hear it, said the DJ from Ottawa. I definitely come from a time when electronic music was underground, at least in North America. Its exciting to play all these big shows its good and weird at the same time.

But according to Bear Witness, thats the biggest challenge creating tracks that can translate to dance floor hits without the limited shelf life of commercial music something thats not just for clubs, but also tells a story, he said.

The DJs are hoping to accomplish this by collaborating with a range of different vocalists, including MCs, for the upcoming new album. A Tribe Called Red is also heavily involved with Tribal Spirit, a fair trade record label that allowed the group to sample all the chants and drums from its catalogue. For the new album, Tribal Spirit is even helping by recording on multiple tracks. The new audio of hand drums and big drums, even men and women singing separately, will give the group more creative freedom, says Bear Witness.

Meanwhile, A Tribe Called Red is touring Canada and continuing to use its success as a platform to raise political awareness. The group was vocal supporters of Idle No More and last year, DJ NDN even filed a human rights complaint against the Nepean Redskins Football Club.

I think it comes down to a fine line where we dont make political music on the surface, its politic by nature, said Bear Witness. What were able to do as performers is be able to affect the way that were represented in the media, going against a long history of misrepresentation of indigenous people. We can break down those stereotypes as simply as with a photograph of us laughing and smiling.

Kendra Wilkinson Rocks Huge Baby Bump on Red Carpet: Picture

Must have been in hiding! Pregnant Kendra Wilkinson is showing -- in a big way! After first debuting a tiny belly last November, the reality star turned heads sporting a major bump on a red carpet in L.A. on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

PHOTOS: Celebrity pregnancy confessions

The 28-year-old Kendra on Top star proudly showed off her belly at the premiere of The Hungover Games in a tight-fitted blue dress. She placed her hands on her tummy for pictures on the red carpet, and looked flawless with her shoulder-length blonde locks worn down.

Red Sox Second Base Outlook: Mookie Betts Turning Heads In Minors

Pedroias extension seemed inevitable despite the Red Soxs recent reluctance to hand out lucrative, long-term contracts. The four-time All-Star is the heart and soul of the Red Sox, and Pedroias contract actually is an extremely team-friendly deal despite reaching nine figures.

Either way, Pedroia was going to be Bostons second baseman in 2014. The new contract, however, ensures that Pedroia likely will be a Red Sox for life, and that the rest of the roster will be filled in around him on an annual basis.

Its still worth diving into the Red Soxs second base situation, though, as there are a few notes worth mentioning before spring training kicks off.

Depth chart

1. Dustin Pedroia 2. Jonathan Herrera

Pedroia, obviously, is the guy. Jonathan Herrera, acquired from the Colorado Rockies this offseason, figures to be the Red Soxs primary backup, although that could change throughout the year if he proves to be ineffective in his role.

Points of optimism

-The Red Sox have arguably the best baseman in baseball at a very reasonable price (Pedroia will earn $12.5 million in 2014). Whats not to like about that if youre the Red Sox?

-Pedroia played 160 regular-season games and all 16 of the Red Soxs playoff games last season despite suffering a thumb injury on Opening Day. You can count on him to be in the lineup every day, which cant be said for a lot of big leaguers nowadays.
