The couple went public with their relationship in May, and in June, the opinionated Haze spoke out after receiving some criticism.

"An interracial gay couple, I mean thats just weird for America right now," Haze told The Independent. "We f--k and friends dont f--k. I have never f--ked one of my friends."

Red Shirts cornered as army stifles dissent

Bangkok: With leaders rounded up and soldiers deployed in their rural heartlands, Thailands Red Shirts have gone to ground but experts say they will regroup against the militarys toppling of the government they helped elect.

The red-clad street protest movement, established in the wake of a 2006 coup to rally support for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, has warned that the kingdoms long-running political conflict could descend into civil war.

The Red Shirts say they have been hit hard by a crackdown since army chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha deposed the Thaksin-allied government last Thursday and seized wide-ranging powers.

Several activists told AFP they have been hemmed in by a big army presence, detentions and closures of influential local radio stations used to spread their pro-Thaksin message.

There are no leaders, said Aporn Sarakham, a former senator and the wife of Kwanchai Pripana, a hardline Red Shirt from north-eastern Thailand detained by the army on Friday.

The movements hierarchy from the firebrand protest leaders to local village heads are being held or harassed or have gone to ground to avoid detention.

The Red Shirts do not know what to do... we have to wait and see what the army does and what our leaders in other provinces and districts say, Amnuay Boontee, a Red Shirt co-ordinator in Buriram province, told AFP by telephone.

Phone lines have also been cut, according to the activists. Calls by AFP to several other leading Red Shirts could not be connected.

In our hearts we are against the coup but people are scared, said a Red Shirt leader who requested anonymity. All of our leaders are detained.

People are sitting and talking about it, but things are quiet.

Victorino heads to disabled list again for Red Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Boston Red Sox placed right fielder ShaneVictorino on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season.

Both times it's been because of a strained right hamstring. He was sidelined from the start of the season until he was activated April 24. Outfielder DanielNava was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Also, designated hitter DavidOrtiz and first baseman MikeNapoli were not listed in Saturday's lineup because of injuries.

The flurry of activity took place before the Red Sox played Tampa Bay, with Boston trying to end an eight-game losing streak.

Manager John Farrell said Ortiz has a calf injury. Napoli is still feeling the flu-like symptoms that sidelined him Wednesday and Thursday in addition to hamstring, calf and finger issues.

"We're beat up," Farrell said.

Saturday was a planned day off for Ortiz to deal with his injury.

"This is what his situation called for," Farrell said.

Napoli could miss a few days.

"I can't say this is a one-day thing," Farrell said. "It might be more days needed than that, and we're hopeful to avoid a down time on the DL as well with him."

Stephen Drew Heads For Red Sox Minor-League Assignment

The Sports Xchange The Hartford Courant

6:50 p.m. EDT, May 23, 2014

Shortstop Stephen Drew cleared waivers on Friday and was sent him to Class A Greenville after he re-signed with the Boston Red Sox this week.

Drew, who rejected a contract offer during the offseason before accepting a prorated share of a $14.1 million qualifying offer on Tuesday, is expected to be in the minor leagues about 10 days before he returns to the majors.

Boston manager John Farrell told reporters that Drew would be with Greenville for four days before going to Double-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox want Drew to get back into the swing of things with about 25 at-bats.

During the Red Sox's World Series season in 2013, Drew batted .253 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs in 124 games.

Another reversal has Red Sox heading the wrong way

BOSTON (AP) - Most of the fans had left Fenway Park by the time the Red Sox scored against the Toronto bullpen to cut a five-run deficit to two. And when the game ended in another Boston loss, there wasnt enough energy left in the crowd for a healthy boo.

The defending World Series champions lost again the next afternoon, completing back-to-back sweeps at Fenway Park by the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. Its the first time Boston has gone winless on a homestand of at least six games since Butch Hobson presided over the 1994 team.

With eight losses in a row after a 1-0 defeat Friday night to Tampa Bay, that brings up another embarrassing name in franchise lore: Bobby Valentine. Not since the Red Sox lost the last eight games of his one-year reign have they slumped this badly.

Its frustrating right now for a number of guys, Red Sox manager John Farrell said after losing to Toronto 7-2 on Thursday to end the homestand without a win. Everyone in our uniform is aware of whats taking place.

Less than seven months after going from worst-to-first, following the collapse under Valentine with a World Series victory, the Red Sox have reversed course again - and not in a good way. They are a season-worst seven games under .500 and have fallen into last place in the AL East.

Theres plenty of time to turn it around, catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. Weve just got to do it tomorrow. We cant waste any more time.

The front office apparently agrees.

The signing of shortstop Stephen Drew to a one-year deal Wednesday helps shore up the left side of the infield, at least while third baseman Will Middlebrooks is injured. Drew was the shortstop on the World Series champions, but he remained without a team after rejecting Bostons $14.1 million qualifying offer over the offseason.

At the very least, his signing is a signal that the team isnt ready to concede its title defense and use the year to get young players like Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr. some experience. But Drew, who batted .253 with 13 homers and 67 RBIs last year, might not help much at the plate for a team that is hitting .245 for the season.

The Red Sox entered Friday 12th in the AL with 4.02 runs per game, and their .238 batting average with runners in scoring position is 13th out of 15 teams in the league.

Red Cow: Fab frites, sharing at Ethan Stowells brasserie

Originally published May 23, 2014 at 6:15 AM | Page modified May 23, 2014 at 6:50 AM

After opening a series of mostly Italian restaurants in neighborhoods across Seattle, Ethan Stowell segues from bistecca to steak frites at his new Madrona brasserie, Red Cow.

Youll know the place it was once Cremant, then June, then lately Restaurant Bea but you wouldnt recognize it. Beas flowered wallpaper has given way to a sophisticated urban monochrome of black, white and not-quite-50 shades of gray. A squat pillar candle on a plate is the sole adornment at each zinc-topped table, unless you count the modish men and women who regularly dine here.

They look good reflected in mirrors embedded in weathered wood paneling above high-backed, cushioned banquettes. Mirrors also trim the archway to the kitchen, visible beyond a cozy bar and lounge that is a haven for drop-ins and something of a refuge from the almighty roar up front. (The noise level is something that hasnt changed. Management hopes to install sound panels soon.)

Steak frites is Red Cows raison dtre. The frites are fabulous, which bodes well for Chippys, the fish-and-chip joint Stowell debuted this month in Ballard, next to his flagship, Staple & Fancy. But the inch-thick, one-pound boneless rib-eye with them lacked a proper sear: no crust, no juice, in short, a bust.

In that same meal, sea scallops were poorly seared as well. Browned only on one side, they were missing the crusty edge they sorely needed in a dish that, except for some hazelnuts, was all luxurious softness: pured potato, braised fennel, nettle pesto, brown butter.

Another night, hanger steak was cooked just right. So was a fat pork chop, evenly burnished and tender to the bone. Roast chicken was perfect, mussels a delight.

Sweet parsnip pure and a potent demi-glace enhanced that chop. A light, lemony, green sauce flattered the crisp-skinned chicken. The mussels, simply steamed with white wine, shallots, butter and sprigs of fresh thyme, came with frites and aioli on the side.

A choice of four sauces is offered with steaks. Ask for a sampler if you cant decide among a mellow red-wine reduction, bold horseradish cream, chive and shallot butter (my preference) or barnaise, which was dense as sour cream one night, thin and frothy another. (Chocolate mousse pebbled with irresistibly crunchy chocolate BBs had similar issues of consistency: pourable as a milkshake one time; smooth and spoonable the next.)

Sharing is a great way to go here with appetizers, salads and sides. Just about everyone starts with charcuterie, six or seven items that will vary, prettily presented with baguette toasts, two mustards, plus pickled carrots, cauliflower and haricots verts. I was most impressed with satiny foie gras torchon, herby lamb terrine and pork rillettes packed in a jar sealed with fat.

BOSTON - Mark Buehrle got his major league-leading eighth win with a big boost from Toronto's powerful lineup.

Neither was surprising.

"Look what he's done all year," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after a 7-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday. "Who's pitched better in baseball?"

Buehrle (8-1) has eight wins through May for the first time since 2002 and an ERA of 2.16. He gave up two runs in the first two innings, but by then Toronto had seven, starting with homers on consecutive pitches by Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista in the first inning.

That gave the Blue Jays a major league-high 67 homers and gave Buehrle a big cushion.

The 15-year veteran lefty blanked the Red Sox for his final five innings and allowed seven hits and no walks while striking out five in seven innings.

Dustin McGowan pitched two shutout innings as the Blue Jays took a half-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East.

"It's nice, obviously" to lead the majors in wins, "but I've always said you can go out your next eight starts and (stink) and be under .500," Buehrle said. "I try to throw it out the window and get ready for my next start."

Toronto improved to 8-2 in its past 10 games, while Boston lost its seventh straight. The Red Sox went 0-6 on their homestand, the first time since June 1994, when they also lost six in a row at Fenway Park, that they were winless on a homestand of at least six games.

"We're in a stretch of games here where we're giving up too many runs early and we're scuffling to score runs," Boston manager John Farrell said. "That's a dangerous combination."

Red Sox's slide hits 7 with 7-2 loss to Jays

BOSTON (AP) - Jon Lester took little solace in a strong recovery after a rough start.

Allowing seven runs in the first two innings was too much for Boston to overcome and end a skid that hit seven straight with a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday.

I just wasnt able to do it with anything. Pick a pitch, I wasnt able to do it, Lester said. It just wasnt good from the start.

Its been a common theme for the defending World Series champion Red Sox, who are on their longest losing streak since losing the final eight games of the 2012 season.

Mark Buehrle won his major league-leading eighth game, Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista homered on consecutive pitches for the Blue Jays as they completed a three-game sweep and won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Lester (4-6) had his worst outing of the season, allowing seven runs and seven hits through 1 1-3 innings. He settled down and retired 12 straight batters and left with one out in the seventh. Lester allowed 10 hits and striking out just three.

He just missed some spots and theyre hot right now. Missed spots against these guys, theyre going whack it, catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. I think the frustrating thing for him was he made some good pitches and they got hits.

Buehrle (8-1) allowed two runs in the first two innings and left after giving up seven hits and no walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. He retired 11 of his last 12 batters.

Lester retired the first batter of the game, Jose Reyes, on a grounder. But Cabrera hit a 1-0 pitch for his eighth homer and Bautista followed with his 12th. Both were to left field.

Toronto kept rolling in the second when six of its first seven batters reached base on five hits and a walk.

Blue Jays deep-six Red Sox

At this rate, it almost would be better if Clay Buchholz was injured.

Then, at least, this would make sense.

But there he was last night, after getting knocked around again like it was batting practice, talking about how good he felt physically, chalking up his problems to rotten luck more than awful pitching.

If you didnt know better, you would have thought Buchholz latest dud five runs (four earned) allowed on nine hits, including two home runs, over 423 innings in the Red Sox sixth consecutive loss, a 6-4 defeat against the Toronto Blue Jays, was just a blip rather than his new norm.

I felt like I had the best stuff in this start, velocity-wise, that Ive had all year, Buchholz said. There is absolutely nothing physically bothering me. Its tough to go out there and, when you miss with one pitch, it gets hit every time. Thats sort of where Im at right now.

Where Buchholz is at is a 6.32 ERA that ranks as the second-highest among all major league pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings. Only Minnesotas Kevin Correia (6.52) is worse than Buchholz, who has given up 14 runs on 29 hits in his last 15 innings.

The last time he pitched this poorly for this long a nine-start stretch to open 2012 in which he posted a 7.84 ERA he still was concerned about letting loose because of a back injury that eventually ended his season in 2012.

Then, like now, Buchholz strayed from his signature changeup, a pitch he didnt throw at all last week in Minnesota. Last night, 12 of his 90 pitches were changeups, but once again, he relied heavily on his fastball and cutter.

Manager John Farrell, the former pitching coach who helped Buchholz through tough times early in his career, suggested the culprits are inconsistent command caused by flaws in his mechanics. Too many pitches are catching too much of the plate, and hitters have been teeing off rather than swinging and missing.

But Buchholz insisted his mechanics are relatively sound.

Red Bluff softball beats Foothill to advance to 7th straight section final

By Rich Greene

rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter

RED BLUFF >> The 2014 Lady Spartans kept their own streak alive to continue Red Bluff High School's streak.

The Lady Spartans won their 22nd consecutive game Tuesday, beating Foothill 8-4 in a Northern Section Division-III semifinal game.

The win puts Red Bluff into a section title game for the seventh consecutive season. They've won three of those, the last coming in 2012.

If they want to make it four titles in eight years, they'll have to beat the team that last handed them a defeat all the way back on April 4 - Enterprise.

The Lady Hornets beat Paradise Tuesday to set up the showdown in Redding scheduled for Saturday.

Meanwhile Red Bluff was in a nail-biter against Foothill despite the 8-4 score.

The Lady Cougars battled back all afternoon and attempted to do so again in the bottom of the fourth when their cleanup hitter Emily Harvey came to the plate as the tying run with the bases loaded and one out.

Harvey got under a Hailee Nichols pitch enough to scare the Red Bluff faithful, but Cheyanne Grannes cradled it into her glove in left field for the second out.

Red Sox show little sign of repeating

More than any other major league baseball team, the Red Sox have redefined the term "impossible." They authored the game's original Impossible Dream in 1967, in 2004 became the first (and still only) baseball team to win a playoff series after losing the first three games, and last year became the first team to go from posting a .426 winning percentage one season to winning the World Series the next.

Ergo, nothing is impossible for the Sox.

Their chances of repeating as AL East champions, world champions or even playoff qualifiers this season become increasingly more unlikely, though, as the weeks drone on. Boston had Monday off and opens a three-game series with Toronto tonight at Fenway Park. As the Red Sox peer ahead at the rest of the season, their outlook should be this:

Cautiously pessimistic.

The Sox are 20-23 after 43 games, that deficit courtesy of the three-game weekend sweep by the Tigers. Since the Impossible Dream was authored in 1967, Boston has never been below .500 43 games into a season and made it to the playoffs. It has happened 12 times before this year, all but one of those occasions before the expanded wild card was introduced.

While the 119 games left to play provide the Red Sox with a lot of time and opportunity to get things right, and while their deficit in both the AL East and wild card races is almost inconsequential right now, 43 games is enough to establish team character, and that is the hardest part of the formula to adjust.

Boston's character is not very good. That isn't for lack of effort or commitment. Lack of talent? Maybe, because the 2014 Red Sox are not as good in reality as they looked on paper.

A.J. Pierzynski is a mistake, and now Boston is stuck with two 37-year-old catchers.

That's like having a pair of 85-year-olds serving as president of the United States and vice president.

Jackie Bradley Jr. is no Jacoby Ellsbury; he may not even be a Bob Zupcic. Will Middlebrooks, hurt again, seems to be much more potential than performance. The Grady Sizemore experiment is not working.

Pharrells wife turns heads with her rebellious red-carpet style

Pharrell might rock The Hat, but his gorgeous wife Helen Lasichanh wears The Pants.

From jeans to knickerbockers to jumpsuits, Lasichanh borrows her favorite looks from the boys. What did she wear to the Oscars, where an evening gown is de rigueur? A tux, of course.

Pharrell and Lasichanh are known for mixing casual street style with designer duds (in NYC in 2012).Photo: Dave Allocca/Startraksphoto.com

Like her hit-maker husband, Lasichanh has a daring and distinctive style. She wears European and Japanese designer brands, but picks unexpected pieces, steers clear of anything overtly sexy and appears to prize comfort over glamour. A fashion rebel, she tied the knot last fall in a navy tartan wedding dress. Shes not afraid to tower over her man at awards shows in 4-inch stilettos. And somehow, H, as Pharrell affectionately calls her, makes even her most challenging outfits look cool.

I love her style! shrieks Andr Leon Talley, artistic director of Zappos Couture and former contributing editor at Vogue. Theyre totally into Chanel and Louis Vuitton, but they mix it to make it their own unique style. Helen has this extraordinary quality where she can dress to the nines for the red carpet, or she can go around here with leggings, he adds, nodding at Lasichanh at a recent Uniqlo party.

Asked how she puts together her combos, Lasichanh tells The Post, I dont choose, its just who I am.

Pharrell is almost as prolific in fashion as he is in music, with a new Uniqlo collection as well as upcoming collaborations with G-Star, Adidas Originals and Comme des Garons Parfums, not to mention his own brands. While his wife attends every event with him, she deliberately keeps a low profile and rarely says more than 20 words to the press. Shes been described as a model, a stylist and a designer, but for whom remains a mystery. (Pharrells representative did not respond to requests for comment, even to confirm how her last name is pronounced.) Even her ethnicity is the subject of speculation.

Lasichanh, 33, went to high school and college in Miami. She was a star volleyball player at St. Thomas University, earning the Florida Sun Conferences Player of the Year award in 2001. Her coach, Hector Martinez, calls her a quiet warrior. She was very intense, but she would not necessarily express it verbally.

In a quirky fashion twist, the couple tied the knot on Oct. 12, 2013, in Miami wearing coordinated plaid wedding finery.Photo: INFphoto.com

Lasichanh is said to have met Pharrell in Miami, and they were friends for 2 years before they started dating. She just reminded me so much of myself, Pharrell, 41, told Oprah. Different, and marches to the beat of her own drum. Their son, Rocket, was born in 2008.

Tigers beat up John Lackey, Red Sox

BOSTON John Lackey's last outing against the Tigers was a gem 6 scoreless innings in the Red Sox' 1-0 win in Game 3 of last year's ALCS. The stakes weren't so steep Saturday night at Fenway Park, and Lackey's performance wasn't nearly as sparkling, either.

Lackey lasted just 5 innings matching his shortest outing of 2014 and Detroit battered him for nine hits in a 6-1 win on a beautiful night for baseball.

The Tigers collected five doubles off Lackey, and Miguel Cabrera wrapped a solo home run around the Pesky Pole in the third.

"I thought he had very good stuff," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Lackey. "There were some mislocated fastballs, particularly to the arm side that they were able to capitalize on. When you saw the doubles to the right-handers, those were balls that ended up on the inside part of the plate."

For the second straight game, the Red Sox got hardly anything going offensively. Xander Bogaerts' solo home run into the Monster seats in the fifth accounted for the Red Sox' only run of the series so far.

Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello (7-1, 2.91) won his sixth straight start. He retired the last 11 Red Sox batters he faced. Porcello went eight innings, his longest outing of the year.

"He throws a lot of strikes," Farrell said. "He attacked the strike zone. They've done a good job. It's a good team."

The Red Sox have lost three straight and four of their last five games.

The Tigers have won 10 straight road games and improved to 13-4 away from home, the best mark among American League teams.

Cabrera, who doubled off reliever Koji Uehara in the ninth, was 3 for 4.

Red Sox-Tigers Live: Rick Porcello Shuts Down Sox; Boston Falls 6-1 At Fenway

Final, Tigers 6-1: The Tigers have clinched this series, regardless of Sundays outcome.

Rick Porcello tossed eight solid innings Saturday to guide the Tigers to a 6-1 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Detroit now has taken the first two games of this weekends three-game set, as Max Scherzer spearheaded Fridays impressive display of pitching by the Tigers.

Porcello gave up just one run on six hits while earning his seventh win of the season. The right-hander struck out four, walked one and threw 110 pitches (71 strikes).

John Lackey did not fare as well. The Red Sox starter lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He struck out four, walked two and threw 96 pitches (70 strikes).
