UTEP football: High-powered Red Raiders offense will be huge test for Miners

The UTEP football team heads into its showdown with Texas Tech staring down the barrel of a gun.

A Red Raiders team rarely stopped by anyone in the Big 12 faces a Miners squad that has struggled defensively for a long, long time. UTEP is 0-12 against teams from the Big 12, it hasn't beaten a power conference team in 47 years. UTEP is a three-touchdown underdog.

The Miners are right where they want to be.

"This is so exciting," cornerback Adrian James said. "As a defensive back this is one of the games you dream of playing, going against a passing team, honing coverage skills. We get to show we can cover man, play zone, all the things great defensive backs can do."

This from receiver Jarrad Shaw: "Big game, a big crowd, a Big 12 team, this will be a lot of fun."

All but a few of the players on UTEP's roster weren't considered good enough in high school to be recruited by the Red Raiders and that's one reason they ended up here. The chance to line up against Tech and test themselves is another and Saturday in front of a rowdy home crowd and a national television audience they get that opportunity.

The game begins at 9 p.m. and will be shown on the FoxSports1 channel. There is a 50 percent chance of rain.

Last week, UTEP beat UNM in Albuquerque. Texas Tech struggled to beat Central Arkansas by seven points.

"I don't think they'll have a hard time focusing after this week," Red Raider coach Kliff Kingsbury said of his team.

UTEP's defensive focus begins with the stopping Tech's quick start. Tech looks to run a bunch of plays in a hurry and any chance of slowing them entails getting everyone situated on defense.

Will Middlebrooks: Winter Ball Decision Not Like A Butting Of Heads

The Boston Red Sox have left open the possibility of Middlebrooks playing winter ball after a disappointing 2014 season. The third baseman hasnt yet made a decision, though, as several factors are in play.

Its tough, Middlebrooks told WEEI.coms Alex Speier during the Red Soxs series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium this week. I do understand the organizational side of it and what they need to feel or see, but then theres my side of it. I want to go get healthy, I want to go get stronger, I want to get fresh, turn the page and get ready for next year. Its a tough decision.

I just feel like, do I take the time and go get healthy and let some of these things go away, not swing a bat for a while, or do I get the consistent at-bats in games for a couple months and then have the healing pushed back and take more time for everything?

Middlebrooks expects to have more discussions with the Red Sox this month regarding the possibility of playing winter ball after the season ends. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington, assistant GM Mike Hazen and manager John Farrell all pointed to winter ball as being a possibility for the 25-year-old, but Middlebrooks, who has battled various injuries over the last two seasons, wants to make sure the benefit of garnering extra at-bats wont be mitigated by an inability to fully recover health-wise for 2015.

Thats the part I dont know. Thats the part Im just not sure of. I dont know, Middlebrooks said. Thats something that time will tell. I dont have an answer for you.

Middlebrooks made it clear in his conversation with Speier that the subject of winter ball isnt one involving animosity. The sides remain amicable in all their discussions, which should increase in the coming weeks.

Its not like Im going against them. Its not like a butting of heads. Its not like that at all, Middlebrooks told Speier. They understand where Im coming from and I understand where theyre coming from.

Its been another disappointing season for Middlebrooks, who hasnt lived up to expectations since bursting onto the scene in 2012. Injuries certainly have played a role, even if theyre not the only preventative flaw in Middlebrooks game.

I know Im a good player, Middlebrooks said. When Im healthy no excuses but when Im healthy, I know the type of player I am. I know the impact I can make in the game. Thats not cockiness. I just know the player I am. I know the tools I have. I know what I can do. Ive done it. That adds to the frustration when things arent going well, because I know the player I am. Its hard not to be able to show it.

Red Bluff City Council approves raises for department heads, managers

By Andre Byik

abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter

RED BLUFF >> The Red Bluff City Council approved 4.5 percent raises for department heads and midmangement employees at its meeting Tuesday, bucking a 3 percent increase initially requested by the city manager.

City Manager Richard Crabtree told council members that city employees represented by the city's four bargaining groups such as police, firefighters and others have or will receive 4.5 percent raises during the city's 2014-2015 fiscal year.

The unrepresented managers who oversee those employees, however, were not scheduled to receive any raises this year per the city's budget, Crabtree said. He added that the recommended 3 percent salary increase came "out of fairness to these employees who supervise people who have received 4.5 percent raises."

The City Council last year approved 3 percent raises for management and midmangement employees, and council members Tuesday initially considered a request for 3 percent raises, retroactively effective July 1, 2014.

Eighteen positions, of which five are listed vacant, including the positions of the Red Bluff fire chief, fire marshal, associate and assistant civil engineers and a building official, would have received raises that were estimated to cost the city about $15,400 annually.

The approved 4.5 percent increases bumped that number to about $23,100 per year.

The request came on the heels of a positive budget update presented to the City Council in August, when the city's finance director, Sandy Ryan, said the city's general fund balance at the end of next June was estimated to be about $1 million. The figure was a jump from an earlier estimate that pegged the city's general fund balance next June at about $500,000.

"If the employees got 4.5 percent, why aren't their managers getting 4.5 percent?," Councilman Clay Parker said, adding that while the managers didn't bargain for raises, "They are still doing a great job, and they're good employees. Why wouldn't we give them 4.5 instead of 3?"

Red Amnesia (Chuangru zhe): Venice Review

Qin Hao, Lu Zhong and Feng Yuanzheng in "Red Amnesia"

A slow-starter that evolves into a haunting account of damages endured, inflicted and forgotten

Venice Film Festival (Competition; also in Toronto festival)

Wang Xiaoshuai

VENICE As the title suggests, Red Amnesia considers the selective memory that erases past stains as contemporary China continues its frantic sprint to become a social and economic superpower. Wang Xiaoshuai's latest is somewhat bipolar, beginning as an unhurried mystery about the harassment of an elderly widow before abruptly switching gears more than halfway through to take an unsentimental plunge into the past. Combining elements of melodrama and thriller with a strong political subtext, this is a challenging work that guards its secrets closely but builds cumulative power.

The film represents a return to complex territory for the Sixth Generation director who first turned heads with the underground feature The Days in 1993 and then had his biggest international breakthrough with the neorealist homage Beijing Bicycle in 2001. Wang considers the new film the completion of a trilogy about the legacy of past social and political movements, following Shanghai Dreams and 11 Flowers.

The story's central character is the stubborn, elderlyDeng, played with cantankerous charm and fragility by stage veteran Lu Zhong. Her complaints of receiving anonymous phone calls are initially dismissed by doctors and by her grown children as the product of an aging mind.

Determined to remain useful and reluctant to give up her role as the traditional caregiver, she barges uninvited and without warning into the home of her gay son Bing (Qin Hao) to cook for him, although she makes no secret of her disapproval of the way he lives his life. The casual establishment of his relationship with a male lover, and Deng's refusal even to acknowledge the other man's presence, are beautifully handled. Time spent with her elder son, Jun (Feng Yuanzheng), is made equally tense by the irritation of Deng's daughter-in-law (Amanda Qin), sparked by the old woman's intrusive manner.

How Boston Red Sox Will Solve Murky Future at Third Base

The Boston Red Sox have plenty of holes to fill for 2015, but one of their most glaring points of weakness is at third base.

The Red Sox headed into 2014 with a reasonable amalgamation of talent at the hot corner. Will Middlebrooks was just a year removed from a promising 2012 campaign. Garin Cecchini looked poised to break into the majors. And capable backups like Jonathan Herrera and Brock Holt figured to provide extra depth should something go awry.

However, Red Sox third basemen have hit just .207/.267/.297 with eight homers this yeara startling lack of production from a group that includes Middlebrooks, Holt and Xander Bogaerts.

Its obvious that the Red Sox need to address their lack of front-end starting pitching talent in the offseason, and that is indeed the team's biggest need. Yet Boston will also need to make a decision when it comes to third base, and while there are no shortage of options before them, there's no clear-cut answer, either.

The Red Sox might choose to try and solve their third base vacancy internally. They might look to the free-agent market for help. Or, they could try and swing a trade.

A deeper look at these various options shows that while the Sox have plenty of room to get creative, it's likely going to be difficult to fix third base without allocating substantial resources.

Will Middlebrooks

Few Red Sox have had as disappointing a 2014 campaign as Middlebrooks. Looking to cement himself as Boston's third baseman of the present and future, Middlebrooks has instead cast doubt on his role as an everyday MLB player.

In an injury-shortened year that's seen him reach just 179 PA in the majors, Middlebrooks is hitting .183/.251/.268 with a 29.6 strikeout percentage and just two home runs. The lack of power from Middlebrooks is especially concerning, as that was largely his calling card up until this season.

FIELD HOCKEY |Cornell Squad Will Face In-State Rival Colgate In Season Opener, Looks to Start Season Strong

By LISA AWAITEY

The Cornell field hockey team heads to Colgate for a thrilling season opener this Friday, September 5 against its in-state rival. The Red has a 24-14-4 (.619) record for all-time season openers and edges Colgate in the series with an all-time 20-19-3 record.

At the last meeting against the Raiders, Cornell walked away with 3-2 victory at home. Sophomore Katy Weeks was instrumental for the Red, scoring two for Cornell.

However, the win was tough, with Colgate pulling ahead twice, forcing Cornell to equalize and regain momentum on the offensive end. The first goal came from Elly Plappert 14, who tipped in a shot from current junior Marisa Siergiej. Minutes later, the Red found itself trailing. Plappert helped tie the game once more, this time with an assist to Weeks. The Plappert-Weeks duo was able to score again to secure a win for Cornell.

Looking ahead to the season opener, the squad is optimistic about putting that first W on the board coming off a rigorous preseason, according to senior Katherine Stone.

After looking at how hard everyone has been working this preseason, I am really excited for this season, she said.

Returners will be looked at to make an immediate impact on the field: junior captain Taylor Standiford and assistant captain senior Ann DiPastina in the midfield, Weeks, junior Katie Garrity and sophomore Georgia Lord in the front half, and Siergiej, Stone and junior Stephanie Eggertson on defense.

After Fridays opener, the Red will return to Marsha Dodson field to face Albany. The Great Danes lead the Red with a 4-3 record, defeating Cornell 3-0 at the last matchup. Despite a solid performance from Cornell, the Red played a formidable opponent in Albany, with goalie Carolyn Horner 14 recording a personal best of 15 saves in the loss. The Great Danes recorded almost 30 shots while the Red was held to only three.

After the season and home opener this week, the Red heads to Lehigh on Friday, September 12 and will then make a quick turnover with a game just two days later against Delaware.

Yankees look in terrible shape

NEW YORK So what if the Red Sox are playing a meaningless three-game series against a Yankees team that still has a shot at the playoffs?

Trust me, Red Sox fans, you really dont want to be in the Yankees shoes right now.

Sure, on the face of it, thats a ridiculous statement since every team wants to be playing meaningful games in September.

And the Yankees, technically speaking, are still playing meaningful games. Four games out of the AL wild card chase with four teams Athletics, Tigers, Mariners and Indians ahead of them, the Yankees still harbor hopes of playing in October.

Crazier things than that have happened, but does anyone really feel that this is a Yankees team destined for greatness? How about a pretty good team?

It stands to reason that when a team spends $438 million in one offseason on four players Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Carlos Beltran and Masahiro Tanaka that team ought to be a slam-dunk to make the playoffs or, at the very least, stand out from the crowd.

However, by now you know that the 2014 Yankees are not a great team, and they dont seem to stand for much more than pouring bad money after good.

This wasnt the plan, thats for sure.

The last time the Yanks went to the checkbook strategy was after the 2008 season when they signed CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett for only $424 million. It worked perfectly when they won the whole shebang in 2009.

But look at the Yankees now.

Red Raiders start slow, win season opener By Everett Corder Sports Editor Daily Toreador - Dept. of Student Media, Texas Tech University |

60,778 fans set a season opener record Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium watching the heavily favored Red Raiders take on Central Arkansas.

Texas Tech won the game 42-35, but coach Kliff Kingsbury said he was embarrassed by the sloppiness of the team. The Bears, he said, wanted the win more.

(Im) just disappointed because I know how good they can be and we come out and play like that, Kingsbury said. Ive got to give Central Arkansas all the credit in the world. They played hard. They had a plan. They expected to win the game.

Central Arkansas and Tech both went three-and-out on their opening offensive drives, but the Bears were able to get on the board after their second drive with a 28-yard field goal.

Trying to catch the Red Raiders by surprise, Central Arkansas attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff, but Tech recovered and drove down the short field to score the games first touchdown.

Tech junior DeAndre Washington ran the ball from the one-yard line for the score and eventually racked up 104 rushing yards on 20 carries in the game.

Red, itchy eyes? Why watching too much TV may be to blame

One morning last year, a mother at my daughter's school stopped me at the gates. 'Late night?' she tutted, surreptitiously sniffing as if checking for signs of alcohol. 'You look like you haven't slept for a week. Everything all right?'

I was incensed. I'd been teetotal for a month and had slept eight hours straight the night before - I deeply resented any suggestion of impropriety.

But at home, scrutinising myself in a mirror, I saw immediately that she had a point: my bloodshot eyes were the colour of red snooker balls. I looked like I'd been hurled through a windscreen, eyeballs first. My wife was of scant comfort: 'What's new? You've had red eyes for as long as I've known you.'

Dry eye symptoms include sore, irritated eyes and blurred vision

I had assumed for years it was just the hours spent huddled over a computer screen. But looking at them more closely, I had to accept my eyes - which had been slightly red since my early 30s - had not felt right for months. They were constantly scratchy, sore and dry.

J.Lo turns prim Hamptons heads

Jennifer Lopezs Gucci gown with plunging neckline worn to the 39th Hampton Classic Horse Show on Sunday had some uptight guests doing double takes.

Everybody almost dropped when she walked in, said a blue-blooded spy at the event which brought out Michael Bloomberg and Diana Taylor, Rudy Giuliani, Kelly Klein and author Tom Wolfe.

What she was wearing was very un-horse show, which tends to be stuffier then red-carpet events.

One fashion Web site, however, endorsed the look as, daytime sexy chic.

J.Lo nearly had a wardrobe malfunction, a spy added, when a guest unceremoniously, stepped on the back of her gown and it began pulling sideways to nearly give all an eyeful.

Luckily, she made a graceful recovery and headed to a VIP table with twins Max and Emme in tow.

A day earlier J.Lo was at Mecox Beach with on-again beau Casper Smart.

Also enjoying the equestrian escapades were Christy Turlington, Matt Lauer, Beth Stern and Randy Kemper and Tony Ingrao.

Red Sox acquire Jemile Weeks from Orioles for Kelly Johnson

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- A few hours after Dustin Pedroia suffered what appears to be a concussion and left Saturday night's game in the second inning, the Red Sox completed a four-player trade with the Baltimore Orioles in which they will receive second baseman Jemile Weeks.

Coincidence? Total coincidence.

The Orioles have been looking for a third baseman since Manny Machado was lost to a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago, according to a major league source, and the Red Sox didn't have a well-defined role for Kelly Johnson, whom they acquired for shortstop Stephen Drew at the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline.

And so, the Sox agreed to send Johnson and infielder Michael Almanzar to Baltimore for Weeks and infielder Ivan De Jesus Jr. Weeks is expected to join the Red Sox in Tampa, while De Jesus will be assigned to Triple-A Pawtucket, manager John Farrell said.

As it turns out, Weeks might play sooner and more often than the Red Sox expected. Pedroia was struck on the side of the head by a seemingly accidental elbow from the Rays' Logan Forsythe, who slid head-first into second base while advancing on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Hanigan in Tampa Bay's 8-0 victory at Tropicana Field. After reviewing the play, Farrell said he didn't believe Forsythe intentionally tried to hit Pedroia. Forsythe said that was "absolutely not" his intention, adding that he's "not that kind of player" and simply attempted a "swim-move" to avoid the tag.

Pedroia experienced dizziness on the field, according to Farrell, and was removed from the game immediately. Although his symptoms improved as the game went on, he was scheduled to see a doctor in Tampa and the Red Sox planned to monitor him overnight.

Brock Holt took over at second base and would be the first choice to play the position if Pedroia is sidelined for several games. But Weeks, 27, is a natural second baseman who has also played shortstop, left field and center field this season for the Orioles' Triple A club. After batting .303 with a .761 OPS and 22 stolen bases in 97 games as a rookie in 2011 with Oakland, he slipped to .221 with a .609 OPS in 2012 and has played only 11 games in the majors over the past two seasons.

Johnson, meanwhile, appeared in only 10 games for the Red Sox, going 4-for-25 (.160) with one RBI. He has now played for all five AL East teams, including the Yankees, Red Sox and Orioles this season.

"Yeah, it's crazy. Obviously I'll be familiar with the surroundings (in the AL East)," Johnson said. "It's exciting. It's cool to be in the playoffs or to be on a team that's in first and going to the playoffs. I'll be excited to get there and try to contribute and do some good things."

The Orioles were interested in reacquiring Almanzar, who was selected from the Red Sox in the Rule 5 draft last year but was returned in July when they didn't have a spot for him on the 25-man roster.

Yoenis Cespedes has turned heads with his special skills

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. It was a few hours before a game early in the 2012 season, and then-Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli was minding his own business, working out in the weight room at the Oakland Coliseum.

And thats when he got an eye-popping first look at Yoenis Cespedes.

Cespy walks into the gym in Oakland, picks up two (90-pound dumbbells) and starts warming up, Napoli recalled before the Red Sox continued their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays last night at Tropicana Field. I was like, Um, OK, this guys strong.

As first impressions go, Rusney Castillo will have a tough time topping that.

With the Red Sox $72.5million Cuban center fielder set to be unveiled today in a rookie-level Gulf Coast League game in Fort Myers, were reminded of the splash made by Cespedes, his countryman and soon-to-be-teammate in the outfield who has a distinct flare for the dramatic.

Cespedes already was a star in Cuba when he batted .458 in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, his first widespread exposure on the international scene. Two years later, after defecting from Cuba and being declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, his associates released a 20-minute YouTube video that opened with Star Wars-style rolling text and featured clips of him hitting, running and throwing, to say nothing of showing off a 45-inch vertical leap and 1,300-pound leg press and even roasting a pig on a spit.

It didnt take long for more than a dozen teams, including the Oakland As, to inquire with agent Adam Katz about setting up workouts.

I think color is a great word for it, said Red Sox reliever Craig Breslow, who recalled hearing about the video through former As teammates. You can read scouting reports, you can read commentary on what kind of player somebody is, but until you see them, the visual cues are so powerful.

I feel like a highlight/promotional video was brilliant. You get this kind of like larger-than-life cartoonish presence, and it seems as though he also has lived up to that, to his credit.

Indeed, Cespedes has made quite an impression on the Red Sox. And it isnt merely that he entered last nights game with a team-leading 22 RBI since being acquired in the July 31 blockbuster that sent ace Jon Lester and popular outfielder Jonny Gomes to Oakland.
