In span of days, Red Sox revamp rotation

After Boston missed out on the Jon Lester sweepstakes, the team felt the need to make changes to its rotation, and quickly.

It all began on Thursday, with the team officially acquiring Rick Porcello from the Tigers in exchange for Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Wilson and Minor Leaguer Gabe Speier. Later in the day, the team officially signed Justin Masterson to a one-year, $9.5 million contract.

Then on Friday night, the team acquired All-Star left-hander Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Rubby De La Rosa, Allen Webster and Minor Leaguer Raymel Flores.

"When you see that all are under 30 years of age, they should be in their prime," Farrell said. "When you start to look at starting pitchers who excel in the season and during the postseason, they are guys that are in their 20s."

Right now, the Red Sox rotation will be: Clay Buchholz, Joe Kelly, Porcello, Masterson and Miley. It's a group that lacks a true ace.

MLB.com's Jeff Nelson discusses the Red Sox's pitching acquisitions in Justin Masterson, Rick Porcello and Wade Miley

"Every guy that evolved into a No. 1 kind of pitcher, they had opportunity and they had support and they performed their way into those roles," Farrell said. "We feel like there are candidates like that in the rotation who could emerge into that. The guy that goes to the mound, he's the No. 1 starter."

Signed by the Tigers as the 27th selection overall in the the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Porcello has made at least 27 starts and pitched at least 162 2/3 innings in all six big league seasons since his 2009 debut.

The right-hander is coming off a career-best season in which he went 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA.

J.Crew Hires 4-Year-Old Blogger Mayhem to Create a New Collection: See Her Designs With Jenna Lyons

Heads up, slackers: A preschool kid just nabbed the job of a lifetime.

After recreating 2014's hottest red carpet looks including Jennifer Lawrence's strapless Dior confection and Lupita Nyong'o's breathtaking Ralph Lauren cape dress with just tape and construction paper, blogger Mayhem landed a job at J.Crew. The catch: she's just 4 years old.

Mayhem's mom (and also her assistant paper dress maker), Angie Keiser, shared news that J.Crew's Executive Creative Director Jenna Lyons hired her talented offspring to design a kids collection for the brand's Crewcuts line, to be released during the Summer 2015 season.

"I remember reading the email [from Lyons] and being certain it was a setup," Angie shared via her blog on Dec. 9. "As in, its probably some kind of wicked virus that if I reply to it, my laptop will explode or at the very least melt before my eyes. (My thinking is irrational on occasion.)"

After obviously replying yes to Lyons' inquiry email, the mother-daughter duo were off to go make a collection in New York City.

Jon Lester Saga Tested Red Soxs Commitment To Organizational Philosophy

The Boston Red Sox chose to think with their heads rather than their hearts.

Jon Lester reportedly agreed to a six-year, $155 million contract with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, making him the second-highest paid pitcher in Major League Baseball in terms of average annual value ($25.83 million). The Red Sox probably could have matched the Cubs dollar-for-dollar likely resulting in a Boston reunion but they instead refrained from becoming too emotionally invested in the saga.

The Red Sox absolutely wanted to bring back Lester this offseason, only they wanted to do so on their terms. Once the Lester bidding extended beyond Bostons comfort zone, the organization needed to decide whether to alter its self-imposed threshold or stick to the plan. The Sox took the latter route.

The Red Soxs decision to not go beyond six years and $135 million for Lester wasnt as much stubborn, frugal and merciless as it was systematic. Boston has been reluctant to dish out long-term contracts to pitchers over 30, and while the Red Sox were willing to making an exception for Lester, there still was a barrier the club was unwilling to cross. Two World Series rings and past success werent enough to cloud Bostons organizational vision.

Every scenario has a point at which the best course of action is to stand up and walk away from the table. The Red Sox felt that point in this particular instance was $20 million less than the Cubs highest bid. Its hard to blame them given the number of lucrative, long-term contracts that have backfired in recent years.

This isnt to say Lester doesnt deserve everything he just received. The three-time All-Star is an extremely reliable and durable pitcher capable of spearheading a rotation. Hes a huge addition to the Cubs, who suddenly look like contenders in the National League Central. But Lester joined some elite company with his new contract, making it easy to forget that there were legitimate questions as recently as 2013 about whether he fit the ace mold.

Lesters 2014 campaign marked his first season with an ERA under 3.00 (2.46) since breaking into the majors in 2006. In that span, Kershaw has had six seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA, Adam Wainwright has had four while Felix Hernandez and Zack Greinke each have had three.

For more than $25 million per season, Lester needs to provide ace-like production annually moving forward.

Will the Red Sox rue the day they let Lester get away? Perhaps. Bostons rotation remains in shambles, meaning general manager Ben Cherington cant waste any time in attempting to orchestrate some magic not involving Lester.

Steven Soderbergh Heads To Red Oaks

With not one but two TV projects either about to hit US cable (medical drama The Knick) or in development (a small screen spin-off of The Girlfriend Experience), Steven Soderbergh is seemingly busier than ever, and thats saying something. Now he will also spend time producing a third show, Red Oaks, for Amazon. And hes recruited Craig Roberts, Paul Reiser, Richard Kind and Oliver Copper to star.

As with The Girlfriend Experience show, Soderbergh wont actually direct the pilot for the new potential series, though hes hired someone more than capable: David Gordon Green. And the show represents him collaborating once again with The Knick writer Greg Jacobs. Greg Jacobs told me this idea on the set of Behind The Candelabra and I told him it was great and that he should start working on it immediately, says Steven Soderbergh in a statement picked up by The Wrap. Then, while we were on the set of The Knick he gave me the script he wrote with Joe Gangemi and I said, This is ready to go, let's find a director. We very quickly agreed to approach David because the humour was sharp without being mean, and we felt he would understand and appreciate that.

Red Oaks is set at the eponymous country club in New Jersey in 1985, and features Roberts as an assistant tennis coach. Itll be put up on Amazons Prime Video streaming service with a variety of other pilots for consideration by customers before the company decides which shows will go ahead. Given the people involved, though, wed guess this has a good shot.

Red Sox acquire Wade Miley from Diamondbacks, per report

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

After nearly a full day of speculation, it appears Boston has finally reached a deal for one of Arizona's top starters.

The Boston Red Sox on Wednesday acquired Wade Miley from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Allen Webster, Rubby De La Rosa and a minor leaguer, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi.

The Red Sox were rumored to be close to a deal for Mileyearly Wednesday afternoon, but it took several hours for the agreement to finalize. Miley heads to Boston having eclipsed 200 innings in each of his last two seasons. The 28-year-old left-hander owns a 3.79 ERA/103 ERA+ in 106 big league games. Miley is two years removed from his best season, when he finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting after posting a 3.33 ERA/122 ERA+ in 194 innings.

Webster, who along with De La Rosa, was acquired from the Dodgers in the trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to Los Angeles in 2012, has been unsuccessful in 89 big league frames across parts of two season. The 24-year-old right-hander put up a 3.10 ERA in 20 Triple-A starts in 2014.

De La Rosa owns a 4.54 ERA/86 ERA+ in 113 innings for Boston. The 25-year-old righty has struck out almost a batter per inning in parts of two Triple-A seasons since joining the Red Sox organization.

Red Tape assessment on CH agencies done

THE newly-formed Investment Ombudsman (IO) Mindanao Team is set to meet with three Davao City Government offices today, Wednesday, to reveal the results of their Red Tape assessment, which was conducted in October.

Office of the Ombudsman-Mindanao public assistance center head Maria Corazon Arancon, who is part of the IO Mindanao Team, said they recently concluded the Red Tape assessment on the City Engineer's Office, City Agricultural Office and the Office Senior Citizens Affairs and they are set to meet with the agency's heads today for an exit conference to reveal the results.

"There were a total of seven personnel who conducted the assessment and three people from Manila came to assist us. So what we did is we went to the offices and we observed and studied the flow of their offices. So we are going to meet with the department heads for an exit conference on Thursday," Arancon said.

She said the assessment is intended to determine the delays in the issuance of permits and other services. But she said their assessment is not to litigate the officials of the offices but rather provide recommendations on how to integrate their system for effective delivery of services.

"We had an orientation with the different department heads with the help of the Atty. Melchor Quitain, the city administrator. We told them that we are not here to find fault in their system. It is all with the good intention of improving their system," Arancon said.

She also said that once they have bared the results and their recommendations to the concerned agencies, they will monitor the offices to ensure that their performance will be consistent.

On another note, she said they are set to conduct the blue certificate assessment on the different local government units in Cagayan and Gensan on January next year.

Arancon said the blue certificate assessment also has the same intentions that of the red tape assessment but more focused on the business aspect.

Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Rodolfo Elman, for his part, said the creation of the Investment Ombudsman Teams in June earlier this year was by virtue of Office Order 327.

The IO teams have been formed to address the grievance of investors against business-related public offices and the speedy resolution of their complaints.

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" celebrates 50th anniversary on CBS

"Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" started out as a song made famous by Gene Autry, but he came to life in an animated special that has charmed generations. On Tuesday, Rudolph will run for the 50th straight year.

For a Christmas special to be a classic, it has to have cross-generational appeal, so CBS News assembled what you might ordinarily call a focus group -- though "focus" is probably the wrong word for the young bunch.

And it appears "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" passes that test with flying -- and glowing -- colors.

First airing in 1964, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was the creation of Arthur Rankin and Jules Bass, using a technique they called "animagic."

"The Rankin-Bass characters are just fun," New York Magazine TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz said. "Their bodies and their heads don't match up. Their movements are very awkward and strange."

"They weren't Disney, they weren't trying to be. But there's an incredible amount of artistry that goes into it," he added.

Filmed in Japan, Rudolph employs the oldest form of film animation, also known as stop motion. Movement is created by adjusting flexible dolls in tiny increments and shooting them frame by frame.

"It feels homemade to the point where generations of children were inspired to try to do their own versions of it with their action figures and bendable figurines and things like that," Zoller Seitz said.

Rudolph has influenced a number of contemporary filmmakers from Tim Burton to Wes Anderson.

"Over my years, my being involved in stop motion, I think that I came to appreciate the purity, the simplicity of Rudolph," Oscar-nominated director Henry Selick said.

Mangaluru: Red Bricks adds more beauty to city with two prestigious projects

Daijiworld Media Network - Business

Mangaluru, Dec 9: The identity of Dakshina Kannada is closely associated with the laterite stones, found abundantly in this coastal region. That is why when an enterprising trio of three brothers Rajesh, Sudesh and Shailesh and ably supported by their father Keshav Sujir decided to make a grand entry into the crammed real estate field of Dakshina Kannada he named his company as Red Bricks.

The name really caught the fancy of the people as it was the first company that came out with budget apartments, something unheard of in Mangalore. With its entry into real estate field in 2011 Red Bricks Dwelling and Infra Project Pvt Ltd, promoted by a Mumbai based Mangalorean created quite a flutter and revolutionised the real estate industry in Mangalore with its new-fangled approach by catering to a segment hitherto uncared for and marginalised.

The company found a strong pedestal in Mangalore with its daring approach. With land prices zooming Mangaloreans who are used to living in independent bungalows and huge houses slowly began accepting the apartment culture. But the existing builders focused more on promoting 2 and 3 bhk luxury flats to acclimatise people to the apartment way of life. This trend led to a void as these apartments are beyond the reach of lower middle class and the common people. But then there was a paradigm shift in the scenario with the entry of Red Brick with their two ambitious projects - Red Bricks Palm Hills at Kulshekar Chowky and Red Bricks Village at Silver Gate in Kulshekar.

Trendsetters in affordable apartments

The entry of Red Bricks offering affordable apartments created dj vu among the otherwise dejected people. Having sensed the existing void Red Bricks, which was always itching to do something tangible in its birth place Mangaluru, bought two prime properties in Mangalore to give wings to their dreams. It has been my fathers dream to give something to the working class people of this district. He had come up in a hard way and we can very well relate to the common people and their difficulties, says Rajesh Sujir the eldest of the three brothers.

NDRRMC, Red Cross clash over 'Ruby' death count

MANILA - Disaster officials and the Philippine Red Cross are at odds over the actual number of fatalities left behind by tropical depression "Ruby."

On Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council's official death toll due to "Ruby" rose to 8, with fatalities coming from Regions 4-A (Calabarzon), 4-B (Mimaropa), 7 (Central Visayas) and 8 (Eastern Visayas).

The NDRRMC removed from its tally the two deaths in Iloilo, which were caused by hypothermia.

The council also defended its slow tally on casualties from "Ruby", which is lower than the Red Cross' own count of at least 22 fatalities.

"Convinced naman kami na namatay e pero dapat alam namin kung may certificate na ba yan, kung namatay yan dahil sa bagyo," NDRRMC executive director Alexander Pama said.

"During past typhoon, ang tanong natin bakit mabagal. Dapat official yan. Baka sabihin ng tao, ito ako buhay na buhay."

On the other hand, Red Cross Chairman Richard Gordon said he stands by the organization's own tally and will not argue with government officials about their own official list.

"We are in the business of saving lives. Gusto nila zero casualty, but that's impossible. I commend that, that's good. We should try to aim high but at the same time, gusto nila DOH pa ang mag-ve- verify," he said.

"Kami, kapag nakakita kami ng patay, we are trained to handle the dead."

Included in the Red Cross' own count are four members of the Amuyo family who drowned in Borongan, Eastern Samar, and a certain Epifanio Jardenia from the same barangay.

Red Light Jihad Thailands new breed of Facebook jihadis

Global Post Tuesday 9th December, 2014

Photo of jihadi holding a soldiers severed head by the hair: 403 shares.

Death threat against a Thai college student accused of insulting Islam: 150-plus comments, many of them clamoring for her beheading.

Thailands jihadis are often compared to ghosts. Theyre notoriously mysterious - a network of underground cells that strike suddenly and vanish into the jungle. Unlike the braggarts of al-Qaeda or the Islamic State, these fighters operate under a strict code of silence.

Or at least they used to.

These days, the ghosts are chattering on Facebook. Their Timelines are terrifying, gorier than snuff films. They post photos taken in the aftermath of grisly roadside bomb strikes. They single out Thai soldiers by name and call for their heads.

"Now youre finished, you dickless pig in a skirt," writes one self-proclaimed jihadi in a death threat, written in Thai. "Siamese pig" is their go-to insult for Thai troops.

They show off buckets full of 5.56mm bullets. Thats the caliber of ammo used by their weapon of choice: M-16s stolen from slain Thai troops. Under one close-up photo of assault rifle ammo, a jihadi asks, "Any pigs wanna suck on these?"

Their interests appear incongruous at times - hinting at youthful zeal rather than seasoned focus. Images of beheadings mingle with cat photos. The militants "likes" include pages devoted to Quranic scri...

AFC Bournemouth: Arter slams Doherty over red-card challenge

HARRY Arter slammed as idiotic the tackle that saw Wolves defender Matt Doherty sent off during Cherries incident-packed victory at Molineux on Saturday.

Doherty followed team-mate Rajiv van La Parra for an early bath after his two-footed lunge on Brett Pitman had seen the hosts reduced to nine men in the closing stages.

Dutch midfielder van La Parra had earlier been shown a straight red card by referee Mike Jones for his part in a clash of heads with Cherries defender Steve Cook.

And while Wolves manager Kenny Jackett later confirmed his club would appeal both dismissals, Cherries midfielder Arter said he felt it could be a futile exercise.

Arter, booked for a clumsy 31st-minute tackle on Kevin McDonald, said he had had a good view of both incidents and felt referee Jones had made the right calls.

Asked by the Daily Echo for his opinion on Dohertys challenge, Arter said: I thought it was idiotic. I dont want to call the boy an idiot but to see another professional go in like that on a fellow player was disgusting.

I go back to the Ryan Lowe tackle on Tommy Elphick (during Cherries 3-0 win at MK Dons in February 2013). I wouldnt say it was as extreme as that but the game was over and, in my opinion, he tried to hurt Brett.

Asked for his thoughts on van La Parras dismissal, Arter said: I watched it full-on and felt it was a red card. He didnt go in to hurt Cookie and was probably trying to protect his face with his elbow. The letter of the law is that if you hit someone with your elbow, unfortunately, it is a red card.

The referee is a good one and has refereed in the Premier League for the majority of his career.I felt he made the right decision and, if it had been me, I would have accepted that decision. He didnt mean to hurt him but he led with his elbow and that is a red card.

Arter added: Unless their respective appeals are successful, it is a shame both players will get three-match bans because the level of malice in the challenges were totally different. If there is anything that could be changed it is the length of bans because some tackles deserve longer than others.

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney Make a Rare Red Carpet Appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors

It's not often that Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney walk red carpets together.

But special occasions call for special exceptions, and Sunday's event fell in the latter category. When the couple of three years attended the 37th Annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., the "G.U.Y. singer" turned heads wearing a floor-length white gown with a matching cape. The pop star, 28, added some of her signature sparkle via two rows of rhinestones, which were placed over her bleached brows.

Gaga performed "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and later shared a photo with Kinney on Instagram. "We had such a wonderful time at the Kennedy Center. We both care so much about the arts staying alive and respected. Celebrating all the honorees was an honor for me to be a part of and watch," she wrote.

Other performers included Bruno Mars, Esperanza Spalding and Bruce Springsteen. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama presided over the star-studded concert event, which honored musicians Al Green and Sting, actor Tom Hanks, ballerina Patricia McBride and comedienne Lily Tomlin.

In another Instagram caption, Gaga called "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" a "classic song about keeping faith as the times and people change. I loved singing with the band last night for STING, Trudie, The President and the First Lady. We brought some grit and fire to the stage, and I loved every second of it."

The outing was a sure sign that Gaga and Kinney's romance is getting more serious.

But are they ready for marriage? "Well, you know," Gaga demurred on SiriusXM's The Howard Stern Show Dec. 2. Asked about their rumored commitment ceremony, she said, "Uh, no. You heard a lot of things."

Gaga and Kinney, who met on the set of her 2011 "Yo and I" music video, have bonded over their shared love of art. "I can't really imagine being with anyone other than who I'm with right now," she said. "He's extremely creative. When it comes to his work, he can be quite introverted. He likes to just study and study and sit with his thoughts. We really connect in that way. We don't do the same thing."

Pearson: Konchesky red card a one-sided decision

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has questioned the one-sided decision to send off Paul Konchesky during the Foxes 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday.

The former Liverpool full-back was dismissed following an altercation with Villas Alan Hutton, as the pair clashed heads after Koncheskys late tackle on the Scotland defender.

Pearson has called for more equality and clarity regarding the decision, claiming the 33-year-old was not the instigator in the incident.

Initially we were under the impression it [red card] was for the challenge, if it was I would question that - I dont think it was a straight red.

If it was for the coming together of heads, then I dont feel he [Konchesky] was the instigator of that.

I dont want players to get sent off but I do feel there needs to be equality and clarity as to what actually happened and why the decision was essentially one-sided.

And Pearson bemoaned his teams defending in the build-up to the Villains equaliser when Ciaran Clark headed past Kasper Schmeichel unopposed inside the Leicester area.

We did pretty well in the first half to cause them problems in terms of how we were disciplined in how we defended and we counter attacked very well, added Pearson. They had their moments but we felt we were doing pretty well in the game.

He continued: It was poor defending [for Clarks goal]. We cant allow players to get free contact in the box from a set play. Giving away a set play in that area in the first place is something we need to avoid.

Red Cross: We walk the talk

Red Cross volunteers. EDWIN BACASMAS

MANILA, PhilippinesWalk the talk.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) said it practices what it preaches as it educates its people first before promoting an awareness campaign on the deadly Ebola virus, according to PRC secretary general Gwendolyn Pang.

Pang made the statement before more than 100 PRC chapter heads during the opening of a two-day workshop on Ebola in Binondo, Manila, to start a nationwide information campaign on the deadly virus, which will be disseminated to all barangays. Pang said local chapters are expected to have ownership of their campaign so they can execute it the best way they can.

After the workshop, every chapter or province will come up with their own Ebola awareness campaigns in their own dialects, Pang said.

The workshop focused on educating PRC chapter heads on the symptoms and treatment of the deadly disease, how it is transmitted and the current situation of afflicted countries.

The Red Tent miniseries a feminist twist on biblical story

They loll on coloured cushions, heads thrown back while they laugh at nothing. Their hair is artfully tousled as a saucy beige garment slides up to reveal a slender leg. These are the women of The Red Tent, and they seem more like The Real Housewives of Mesopotamia than the chattel of the Old Testament.

Leah, Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah are women first, and wives of Israelite patriarch Jacob Second. So posits the miniseries The Red Tent, based on Anita Diamants 1997 novel. In four hours, it turns the biblical story of Jacob, Rachel and Leah essentially Two Girls, a Guy and a Drinking Well into the sprawling tale of Dinah, the daughter of Leah and Jacob who was mentioned only briefly in the text.

For thousands of years, Ive been lost to the world. My name means nothing to you, Dinah (Rebecca Ferguson) intones in the opening voice-over. My memory is dust. Only the names of my father and brothers are remembered, their tales celebrated in your holy texts while mine is but a footnote sad, violent.

Starring Minnie Driver, Morena Baccarin and a cast with vaguely British accents, The Red Tent adds feminist sentiment to the popularity of sheep-and-sandals fare such as Mark Burnetts 2013 miniseries The Bible, this past springs film Noah and the upcoming big-screen feature Exodus: Gods and Kings.

Even The Red Tents title celebrates the extra X chromosome: It refers to the place where menstruating or birthing women in Jacobs camp must take refuge by law, though Diamant has acknowledged that in fact theres no historical evidence of such a sacred shelter.

But with The Red Tents frames bathed in fetching golds and browns and light and shadows, does it really matter? Fact blends into fiction as freely as the winds ruffle Jacobs hair in a very Sundance Kid sort of way.

To wit, the Bible tale says Laban tricked Jacob into consummating a marriage with his daughter Leah even though Jacob had his eyes set on Rachel. But here its Rachel (Baccarin) suffering cold feet who sends Leah (Driver) secretly to Jacob (Will Payne). Laban, meanwhile, is drawn as a drunken wife-beating caricature.

Whats more, the lingering jealousy between Leah and Rachel that led to a game of fertility one-upmanship is summed up with just one line: It took Leah and Rachel years to learn how to share a husband. Each one longed for what the other could give him.

Finally, it seems the sexual revolution has swept into the camp a couple thousand years early, a potent mix of dust and lust. For example, as Leah and Jacob bask in a post-coitus glow on their wedding night, he generously says, Show me what to do. And she does, with her hand rustling under the sheets and a few rhythmic gasps.

But the star of The Red Tent remains Dinah. Strong-minded and sure-footed, she revels in her familys sisterhood but refuses its Sister Wives setup. Instead, by the end of the first half, she falls in love and weds a prince without her fathers blessing. Throw in a kooky sidekick and an Idina Menzel song, and youd think you were watching Disney.
