Red Wings' Franzen heads to IR

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Red Wings have placed forward Johan Franzen on injured reserve with an upper-body injury after the veteran missed Wednesday's game at Calgary.

In Tuesday's game against Edmonton, Franzen was hit near the head area by Rob Klinkhammer away from the puck in the neutral zone. He remained on the ice momentarily but was able to skate to the bench and remain in the game.

On the team's flight from Edmonton to Calgary, Franzen reported feeling ill, and he will be re-evaluated.

In 33 games this season, Franzen has seven goals and 15 assists. The 35-year- old owns 369 points in his 600 game NHL career, all with the Red Wings.

In a corresponding roster move, the Red Wings recalled winger Teemu Pulkkinen from Grand Rapids (AHL). Pulkkinen has scored in eight consecutive games for Grand Rapids and leads the AHL with 20 goals.

Peoples Choice Awards Worst Dressed: Ginnifer Goodwin & More

Awards season is officially here and you know what that means! Along with a slew of stylish looks theres bound to be some misses on the red carpet. While the fashion from the 2015 Peoples Choice Awards on Jan. 7 in LA was pretty standard there were still some unflattering styles that left us scratching our heads. From ill-fitting silhouettes to unflattering frocks, see the looks we didnt love hopefully these gals can recover from their style slip up and make it through the rest of awards season looking fabulous and flawless. Are there any styles you really didnt like last night?

Honestly all in all it was actually quite hard to round up our worst dressed list and while some looks werent our favorite they werent totally awful. The biggest problem here seemed to be with the silhouettes with a little tailoring a majority of these looks couldve gone from drab to fab!

Take, for example, Ginnifer Goodwin. I get it, hitting the red carpet after having a baby definitely isnt easy, (thankfully not everyone can bounce back like theyre Gisele!), but relying on a loose silhouette isnt always your best bet. For starters, I didnt think the white color did anything for the star. The dress just didnt do anything for her figure! If the hemline was raised an inch or two and we caught a glimpse of her ankles I think it wouldve done more for her frame. Aside from the silhouette, I also was underwhelmed by the styling. Plain black pumps and a clutch added to the snooze factor of this look. Although I didnt like the dress, I do commend Ginnifer for stepping out and think her post-baby body is fabulous I just hope next time shes back to showing off her stellar style on the red carpet.

New mom Kristen Bell also opted for a loose silhouette but in a bold pink hue the proportions totally worked on the star. She hit the red carpet just three weeks after giving birth. I dont know how Ginnifer and Kristen did it!

Host Anna Faris was dressed to impress on stage but unfortunately the same cant be said about her red carpet look! The ruffled top and matching skirt was very early 2000s and thats a time that I have no desire to relive, especially on the red carpet! She looked like she was heading to the beach in a mediocre teen movie from, like, 1999. Not exactly the vibe you wanna go for at an award show but luckily she recovered and finished off the night flawlessly in one great dress after another.

Another look that left me quite perplexed was the sheer get-up that Camila Cabello showed off on the red carpet. Not only was the skirt entirely sheer, but the top hardly closed, putting her bra on display. It was just showing too much skin in all the wrong ways. Had she balanced out the skirt with a high halter top I mightve been able to get on board but that wasnt the case. The whole get-up seemed ill-fitting and a bit cheap. We love Camila and her trendy sense of style, we just hope next time she tones it down!

What do you think? Which star really impressed you on the red carpet?

White wine is actually red': experts

Brace yourselves, winos that chilled glass of Chardonnay youre sipping may look white, but its actually red, experts claim.

Scientists have discovered that white grapes contain the same pigments which give red wine its color, implying that white wine may technically not exist at all, NewScientist magazine reports.

What distinguishes red from white is that white wine grapes dont have anthocyanins, said Panagiotis Arapitsas of Italys Edmund Mach Foundation.

Blackberries and Raspberries also get their color from anthocyanins which are naturally colored pigments that represent a part of the protective mechanism of many plants, according to Food Research International.

While connoisseurs will surely be left scratching their heads, vitners and winemakers may finally have an answer as to why they occasionally wind up with a pinkish product.

Sometimes there were producers of white wines who collected white grapes and ended up with a slightly ros wine, Arapitsas said. Now they have some information about why that happened.

Up until now, wine experts believed that white grapes didnt contain anthocyanins. This explains why the wine would sometimes appear more white than red.

Using a process known as mass spectrometry, his team analyzed the skins of grapes from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling grapes all used in the production of white wine, according to NewScientist.

Arapitsas and his colleagues found that white grapes did contain anthocyanins, but in concentrations several thousand times smaller than the red grape varieties such as Merlot. This is ultimately why the wine is still referred to as white.

Edmonton woman heads to Africa to help battle Ebola

Chandra Lye, CTV Edmonton Published Sunday, January 4, 2015 2:16PM MST Last Updated Sunday, January 4, 2015 6:30PM MST

An Edmonton woman is heading to West Africa to help in the fight against Ebola.

Laura Keegan left Sunday as a delegate with the Red Cross, something she said brought up many emotions for her.

I am excited because I am ready to go. I am ready to help. Nervous because I dont really know everything about what Ill be doing.

Just knowing the reality of what I am going to is nerve racking but knowing that I can help, hopefully, makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.

Keegan will be based in Kenema, Sierra Leone for a month offering psychological support.

It is a dire time for them but there is always resilience and hope in that.

I am looking forward to celebrating survivals and helping them move forward with a sense of hope for the future.

Skills that she uses in her day-to-day work at HIV Edmonton will come in handy, she explained.

I do a lot of behaviour and communicating around stigma and discrimination and that will be very similar.

After Rajan, PSU banks' heads now question farm debt waivers

Pune, Jan 4, 2015 (PTI)

To check adverse impact of farm debt waiver programmes on the banking sector, heads of the public sector banks have now joined the chorus to seek elimination of such schemes after the issue was red-flagged by RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan last month.

Last month, the RBI Governor had said that debt waiver schemes have constrained flow of credit to farmers.

"In some states on certain occasions we have had debt waivers. How effective these debt waivers have been? In fact the studies that we have typically show that they have been ineffective. In fact they have constrained the credit flow post waiver to the farmers," he had said. Doing away with debt waivers schemes of the government was one of the recommendations by the bankers at 'Gyan Sangam' or Bankers' Retreat which concluded here yesterday.

Besides, they have also sought removal of interest rate caps on agriculture loans of less Rs 3 lakh so that there is no artificial distortion in credit market.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments had declared loan waivers for the farmers hit by cyclone Phailin last year.

While the Telangana government has given the mandated 25 per cent of the written off loan amount to the banks, Andhra Pradesh has not done it so far.

Banks have over Rs 1.3 lakh crore exposure to the farm sector in these two states. In 2008, the then UPA government at Centre had come out with Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme (ADWDRS) 2008 under which 3.69 crore small and marginal farmers and 60 lakh other farmers were given debt relief to the extent of Rs 52,516 crore.

Government auditor CAG had found in several cases that ineligible farmers were given benefit while deserving were left out, pointing to large-scale possibility of fraud.

Besides, top management of the bank also sought digitisation of top 30 processes including land records so that risk of frauds could be minimised. Sensing opportunity from ambitious Digital India campaign of the government, bankers in the 2-day retreat also pitched for enabling infrastructure for Digital Banking under the campaign.

No Red whine for self believer Greg

Andy Gregory claims strong self belief is needed to allow the Salford Red Devils to stand toe to toe and trade blows with Super Leagues heavyweight challengers this season.

Gregory who spent four years coaching Salford from 1995, maintains he always tried to make sure this key trait was prominent and strong within the teams he selected and enjoyed success with.

Most importantly, he labels it a must have component especially for clubs of Salfords stature.

He certainly expects to see it in Iestyn Harris' side that includes a galaxy of stars ranging from Kiwi ace Kevin Locke at full back to star halves Michael Dobson and Rangi Chase.

Harris also has a formidable pack to select from.

Self belief is so very important, says Gregory.

It is so vital and it is surprising what can be achieved when a team has it.

If a player believes in himself, he can do so much for himself, his coach and for his team..

The importance of self-belief was certainly seen at Salford back in 1996 when we beat Wigan in the Challenge Cup and ended their 43 match unbeaten run with a famous victory.

I remember us training on the Saturday morning and John Wilkinson, the then chairman, was watching us.

Live review: The Parson Red Heads ring in the new year with 'Rumours'

Exactly 40 years ago, the Parson Red Heads informed the White Eagle audience on Wednesday night, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac. The partnership rocketed the band to stardom and built one of rock's most enduring catalogs: what better way to celebrate the auspicious (and, the band admitted, coincidental) anniversary than with a tribute?

As 2014 crept into 2015, the Parson Red Heads -- bolstered by fellow Portland musicians to an eight-piece for the evening -- played 1977's "Rumours" straight through, catching the enthusiasm of the classic album's supergroup harmonies and indelible guitar solos. If you closed your eyes after enough McMenamins beer, it might be the '70s still, with Lindsey and Stevie and Christine McVie at the peak of their heartbroken powers. Drummer Brette Way matched both Mick Fleetwood's power and signature tone -- and Mick never had to play "The Chain" while pregnant.

Perhaps the comfort of nostalgia wasn't the boldest way to enter a new year, but a bar wall removed from sub-freezing temperatures, it was a warm and welcome one. The Parson Red Heads topped a night of decades-old tributes: Kevin Lee Florence opened with a spare, gritty performance of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska," and the Moody Dudes (including Blitzen Trapper's Eric Earley, Telecast's Josh White and the Parson Red Heads' Evan Way, among others) delivered a winking rendition of the Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971-1975" that even The Dude might've enjoyed after a long night, at least until the band got to "Tequila Sunrise." The group had fun with falsetto ("Witchy Woman") and teasing at too many lyrics ("Lyin' Eyes"), but the musicianship, particularly Earley's guitar work, was as serious as a nihilist.

Protesters detained after rally near Moscow's Red Square

MOSCOW (AP) 18 protesters, including members of the punk provocateur band Pussy Riot, have been detained in Moscow after spending the night near the Red Square.

Pussy Riot member Maria Alekhina said on Twitter that she and other protesters who stayed the night near the famous Moscow landmark were detained by police early Wednesday.

Activists at the OVD Info group said 18 people were taken to a nearby police station.

A few thousand people rallied outside the Red Square on Tuesday in the boldest anti-government demonstration in years to protest against the court conviction of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his brother. Police allowed the protesters to stay for about two hours before dispersing the crowd.

A FIRE truck raced past a group of travel-weary international soccer players as they trotted around an immaculate Morshead Park Stadium on Sunday.

Welcome to Ballarat, Bahrain.

The group began its preparations for the Asian Cup 2015 in a low-key fashion after arriving in Melbourne in the early hours of Sunday.

Team manager Muhannad Al Ansari was suitably impressed with the facilities and the surrounds, saying the pitch was better than some surfaces the team had practised on at home.

The team will call Ballarat home until two days before the tournament starts on January 9, and, after a bit of encouragement from mayor John Philips, Mr Al Ansari said the players and staff planned to soak up all Ballarat had to offer apart from the soccer.

Red Sox Beat: No strength in numbers

With 2014 winding to an end, lets break down the Red Sox by the numbers. Some are quirky, some are telling, and some are just interesting.

In any event, they can shed some light on what we just saw, as well as the upcoming season.

0 Red Sox relievers who averaged at least 94 mph on their fastball last year. There were otherwise 57 such pitchers across the game, and this points to one possible deficiency as the team heads into the final portion of the offseason.

The Red Sox can hope a youngster like Matt Barnes develops into a late-innings power arm, and stay the course.

Or they can make one more key addition to whats shaping up to be a deep squad and add a legitimate power arm to the back of the bullpen. Junichi Tazawa (93.9 mph) is the closest theyve got, but they could use someone else in front of Koji Uehara.

.143 Average by Xander Bogaerts during a disastrous 60-game stretch from June 8-Aug. 30.

Theres lost and then theres what Bogaerts was in the months after Stephen Drew came aboard and punted Bogaerts from shortstop to third.

The assumption is that Bogaerts will never experience such an epic run of brutality again for the rest of his career. But the fact that he was in that vicinity at all should at least give the Red Sox pause as they project what hell give them this season.

It helps that Bogaerts hit .320 with four homers and 16 RBI the rest of the way. Those 25-game totals project to 25 homers and 100 RBI over a full season, which the Red Sox would take.

Listen, I still think Bogaerts will be a star sooner than later, but we cant discount the notion hell once again struggle.
