MENS TENNIS | Red Notches Victory In Wednesday Match

By SCOTT CHIUSANO

The mens tennis team kept its strong spring season going with a dominant 6-1 win over St. Johns on Wednesday afternoon. The victory marked the Reds third straight, with four wins in the last five matches. Cornell will face off against Buffalo this weekend in its final non-league match of the season, before kicking off the Ivy League season against Columbia on March 28.

Though the Red lost only one match of the day against the Red Storm on Wednesday, five of the singles matches went three sets. Senior Sam Fleck said that although the Red did not play as well as it had hoped, there were some important takeaways.

We actually didnt play too well in our match against St. Johns, he said. A positive that we will take is that we won a lot of very close matches.

Fleck won his No. 1 singles match in three tightly contested sets and then went on to win his No. 2 doubles match alongside sophomore Colin Sinclair. Sophomore Chris Vrabel was the only Red player to win his singles match in two sets.

There will be a lot of close matches in the Ivies this year, so it was definitely good preparation to play in tight situations under pressure, Fleck said. Hopefully we will use this experience in future matches.

According to Fleck, the Red looks to continue its recent successes as it heads into a home matchup with Buffalo on Sunday. Buffalo has taken on Ivy League competition four times so far this season and has failed to come away with a victory.

We are definitely confident coming into the match, as we have built up a lot of positive momentum over the past few weeks, Fleck said. However, we will certainly not be complacent as we have lost to this team before.

In fact, the Red has compiled an impressive 24-1 series lead over the Bulls, but Fleck just happened to be around for the lone loss. The defeat came on Jan. 19, 2014, with a Cornell team struggling to overcome injuries and falling by a close score of 4-3.

Fleck acknowledged that despite Buffalos struggles this season and the Reds overwhelming history of victories against them, the team is by no means complacent. They are still a good team thats perfectly capable of beating us if we dont show up, Fleck said.

DC: Don't take Red Bull threats lightly

David Coulthard has warned that Red Bull's threat to quit F1 needs to be taken seriously as F1 "can't afford" to lose four cars from the grid.

In the wake of the season-opening Australian GP, a race in which Mercedes picked up where they left off in 2014 and trounced their rivals, Red Bull warned they could walk away from F1.

Helmut Marko, who is a staunch critic of the 1.6-litre V6 engines, said there is a danger that team owner Dietrich Mateschitz could lose "his passion for F1."

He added: "These power units are the wrong solution for F1, and we would say this even if [Red Bull supplier] Renault were in the lead.

"The technical rules are not understandable, much too complicated, and too expensive."

Marko's comments were met with some derision from F1 fans while Toto Wolff says Red Bull, Renault and all Mercedes' rivals should put their heads down and "work hard."

Coulthard, though, says people must not scoff at Red Bull's threats as they would not be saying it if they wasn't a possibility they would carry through on it.

"These guys are empowered and are in control, so they are not saying anything that they don't have the position to act on," the former Red Bull driver told Motorsport.com.

"So you take any of these guys seriously because history has shown that manufacturers come and go, teams can and go, and if Red Bull go, they take with them four cars, and you can't afford to just close the door.

"They probably wouldn't. They would probably try to make sure there was something for the mechanics and the engineers."

Red Storm Duo Heads from Queens to Play for Bullfrogs

March 17, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) Green Bay Bullfrogs Green Bay, Wis.- Two of St. John's University's most reliable players, junior second baseman Ty Blankmeyer, and junior left-handed pitcher, Alex Katz, will be playing their first season for the Bullfrogs. Combined, they have experience in the Cape Cod, Hamptons, and Northwoods Leagues.

Blankmeyer is the Red Storm's primary second baseman and also plays shortstop. A native of Morristown, N.J. and graduate of Seton Hall Prep, Blankmeyer plays under the tutelage his father, St. John's 20-year Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer. Ty is an adept base-stealer and so far this spring, has not committed an error defensively. He has started all but one game in the St. John's lineup. He's familiar with the Northwoods League, having played 2014 for the Thunder Bay Border Cats. He hit .260 in 66 games and was second on the club with 14 stolen bases.

"It was the best playing experience I've ever had," said Blankmeyer of his time in Thunder Bay. "You play so much baseball and the venues, the people, the places you go are awesome."

One of St. John's most dominant left-handed arms, Alex Katz, is from New Hyde Park, N.Y. on Long Island and attended Herricks High School. Katz has provided the Red Storm with dominant work so far this season. In four appearances, Katz has a 1.69 ERA paired with a.169 OBP. He throws a fastball, changeup and slider, the latter being his strongest pitch, running inside on the hands of left-handed batters. He will be playing in the Northwoods League for the first time.

"It all worked out well. I have known Ty since my middle school days when we played in summer camps together. And we also played together in the Hamptons League two years ago," said Katz. "[The Northwoods League] prepares you for pro-ball which ultimately is my goal after college."

The Bullfrogs will open up the 2015 season at home on May 26th against the La Crosse Loggers. Group tickets, season tickets and 7-game packages are on sale now. The Bullfrogs off-season hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm. For more information please visit http://www.greenbaybullfrogs.com.

HK chief executive's daughter behaves oddly on red carpet

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Socialite Paris Hilton were among the luminaries who walked the red carpet in Hong Kong ahead of the city's first fundraiser for the Foundation for AIDS Research (AmfAR).

However, one arrival on the red carpet turned heads for all the wrong reasons.

Leung Chai-yan, the notorious daughter of Hong Kong's Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, arrived late on the red carpet and appeared to need support walking.

Leaning against the backdrop for support, she ignored pleas by the carpet host to leave, before stumbling off to laughter and jeers from the local media.

The 23-year-old law student has gained notoriety for a series of explosive social media pictures and messages, one in which she appears to show her slashed wrist, and another saying she feels no shame living luxuriously off taxpayers' money. The accounts have since been deleted.

Stoke City: Ex-favourite heads Stateside to coach at New York Red…

Comments(0)

FORMER Stoke favourite Wayne Thomas is heading to the MLS to take up a coaching role at New York Red Bulls.

The 35 year-old defender will join the club as an Academy coach after working part-time in a similar capacity at Stoke.

But he is best remembered by Stoke fans for his 217 appearances for the club between the summers of 2000 and 2005.

Highlights included a goal - and pitch-long run to celebrate with Stoke fans at the other end - during an FA Cup defeat against Arsenal at Highbury in 2005.

He later played for the likes of Burnley, Southampton and Doncaster.

He even plied his trade in Greece for a spell before returning to play in non-league with Tamworth and Worcester City.

He appeared in a televised FA Cup tie for Tamworth against Bristol City last season.

And this season he played a starring role in Worcester's Cup run that saw them win at Coventry before going out in a replay to Scunthorpe when he missed the fateful penalty in a 14-13 shootout defeat.

Red Cadeaux in good order

World traveller Red Cadeaux will embark on a new stage of his amazing career when he heads to Sydney.

The three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up finished a pleasing fifth in Saturday's Australian Cup won by Spillway.

Flemington is the only track Red Cadeaux has raced on so far in his five visits to Australia.

Robin Trevor-Jones, travelling foreman for Red Cadeaux's trainer Ed Dunlop, said the gelding had come out of the race in good order.

"He looks to have pulled up well," Trevor-Jones said.

"He's wandering around at Werribee eating grass and seems very happy."

Red Cadeaux is entered for the BMW at Rosehill on March 28 as well as the Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick two weeks later.

Trevor-Jones said the gelding would head to Sydney on Wednesday, a day later than originally intended.

With a race meeting at Werribee on Monday, Dunlop wants Red Cadeaux to have a trot on the track before the float trip to Sydney where he will join the other international visitors stabled at Canterbury Racecourse.

Trevor-Jones said if the decision was left to him Red Cadeaux would go straight into the Sydney Cup, bypassing the BMW.

Phillies Notes: Why Phillies' fans eyes were on the Red Sox catcher

CLEARWATER, Fla. - More than a few heads surely turned here at 1:29 p.m. Sunday when the seven-hole hitter for the Boston Red Sox stepped into the batter's box for the first time.

Blake Swihart is the touted catching prospect the Phillies are said to covet in a potential trade involving ace Cole Hamels. The 22-year-old's name constantly surfaces in trade speculation, and will likely continue to do so until the July 31 trade deadline passes.

But while it was a bit curious that Swihart was the catcher sent on the more than two-hour trip to start against the Phillies at Bright House Field, there was nothing to it, according to the Red Sox.

"So, Blake's here because of the rotation that we've been looking for with position players the last four to five days," Boston manager John Farrell said before the game. "Get them a couple of games back-to-back, and his second day falls on today.

Even so, baseball's top catching prospect offered a nice showing at the plate. Swihart, who is expected to start the season in triple A, singled twice in three at-bats and drove in a run. The switch-hitter has seven hits and four RBI in just 13 Grapefruit League at-bats.

"I think people are looking into it too much," Swihart said before the game. "This was just my turn to catch."

Ryan Howard homered, doubled and drove in two runs in the Phillies' 11-4 split-squad win against the Red Sox. Odubel Herrera tallied three of the team's spring-high 15 hits.

Chase Utley, playing again as the designated hitter, singled twice in three at-bats. Nonroster invitee Cord Phelps hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning off Justin Masterson.

In the other split-squad game, the Phillies lost to the Yankees, 3-2, in Tampa. A Chase Headley homer highlighted a decisive two-run seventh inning for the Yankees against nonroster invitee Kevin Slowey.

Red Sox introduce Moncada

"We believe he's certainly one of the few most talented 19-year-olds in the world," said Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. "He's got a really unique combination of skills: a great athlete, speed, switch-hitter with power from both sides of the plate, defensive skills, the athletic ability to play multiple positions if he had to, a natural second baseman.

"So as I said, he's going to enter into our Minor League system, like everyone else. There's still development to do. He's a developing baseball player, but he's an exceptionally talented one. Obviously, given the circumstances surrounding the signing and the investment we're making, we believe he can be a very good Major League player for a long time. And we're committed to helping him get there in the right way."

MLB.com Red Sox reporter Ian Browne discusses Yoan Moncada's signing with the Red Sox and how the team values the Cuban infielder

After working out informally at Minor League Spring Training for the last several days, Moncada will in full uniform from here on out, wearing No. 22. He will likely start this season playing second base for Class A Greenville.

"I need to start playing baseball -- it's been a year since I played," Moncada said. "I'm grateful for everyone involved, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity. I've started to train, and I'm going to train the way I have my entire sports life to be a good athlete. I feel good to be here in this organization."

It was a whirlwind few months for Moncada, as 11 of the 30 Major League teams held private workouts for him.

"It was a difficult process to choose which team, because it's the first time I've ever been through anything like this. My decision was mine and my parents back in Cuba," Moncada said. "I called them and told them the situation. They also believe the Red Sox were the right choice. This is a tremendous organization with great players. I'm going to give it all I can to make it to the Major Leagues."

The Red Sox did due diligence on Moncada before signing him. In fact, Cherington said the club prioritized its efforts in Cuba over the past couple of years. Boston signed outfielder Rusney Castillo to a seven-year, $72.5 million deal last August.

Red Sox to introduce Moncada tomorrow

The 19-year-old Moncada can now report to Spring Training, and he is expected to participate in Minor League camp.

Top 100 prospects

The Red Sox view Moncada as the type of talent you usually get with the top pick in the First-Year Player Draft. In other words, they are excited to have him, but he will need a progression through various levels of the Minor Leagues before being ready to call Fenway Park home.

The deal is worth $31.5 million and shattered the previous signing bonus record ($8.27 million the D-backs paid for right-hander Yoan Lopez) given to an amateur international player.

Browne on Moncada's position, power-speed combination

MLB.com Red Sox reporter Ian Browne discusses Yoan Moncada's signing with the Red Sox and how the team values the Cuban infielder

"We never had a number one pick," said Red Sox owner John Henry on Feb. 24. "This is our 14th Spring Training [as owners of the Red Sox]. We haven't had a number one pick. Would we pay up to get one? Yes."

Because he is not yet 23 years old and did not play in a Cuban professional league for at least five seasons, Moncada was subject to Major League Baseball's international signing guidelines, under which each team is allotted $700,000 and an additional bonus pool based on the team's record the previous year to be used during the international signing period.

Blue Machine's poor home draw tinged with red

Monday, 09 March 2015 01:11

MEXICO CITY: Striker Roque Santa Cruz played with a red bandage after a clash of heads and captain Gerardo Torrado was shown the red card in his 300th match for Cruz Azul as they could only draw in the Mexican championship.

Held 1-1 at home by Atlas on Saturday, the Blue Machine were booed off their Estadio Azul pitch after their first point in three matches leaves them in fifth place in the Clausura standings after nine matches.

Forward Alejandro Vela put Cruz Azul ahead near the half hour mark but Juan Medina equalised in the 75th minute and former Mexico international midfielder Torrado was shown a straight red card for dissent, which included insulting the referee.

"I complained to the referee that there was a foul in the move that led to the (Atlas) goal I made a mistake when I insulted him I went and told him there was a foul, he said 'no' and I lost my head," Torrado told reporters.

Torrado, who has been at Cruz Azul for nearly a decade since joining them from Racing Santander in 2005, is looking for a first Mexican championship, having won the Copa MX knockout competition and the CONCACAF Champions League with them.

Paraguay captain Santa Cruz, who had missed the previous six matches through injury, clashed heads with Atlas's Argentine defender Walter Kannemann when challenging for a high ball.

Cruz Azul made a six-match unbeaten start to the championship but have gone off the boil while Tijuana took the lead which they clung to on Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Santos Laguna that leaves them one point ahead of Veracruz.

Second-placed Veracruz enjoyed 24 hours at the top of the table after Friday's 1-0 home win over Leon, who had three players set off in the final 12 minutes.

Ronaldinho's Queretaro ended a run of six matches without a win when they beat relegation-threatened Guadalajara 1-0 on Friday with a stoppage-time goal by midfielder Mario Osuna.

Bald heads, red beans, and cash for a good cause at Rivershack Tavern St. Baldrick's event

At theRivershack Tavern on Friday (March 13), volunteers armed with shears will perform thousand-dollar haircuts. It's the eighth year the bar and restaurant has hosted such an event, which asks volunteers willing to have their heads shaved bald to raise donations for their bravery from friends and family.

So far, 16 people have signed up online to have their heads shaved at Rivershack Tavern on Friday for donations of $5,870. But numbers could climb quickly, as last year's event saw 30 heads shaved and $18,000 in donations, said organizer Rona Ballard. "Each year it's gotten bigger and bigger," Ballard said. "This is so serious. If you have a sick child, you do everything you can to try to save them...Anything we can do to help these kids, we will do it."

The event is not limited to watching hair fall to the floor. A silent auction features such goodies as a free crawfish boil, a charter boat ride for a fishing trip, jewelry items, and gift certificates donated by area restaurants, Ballard said.

Volunteers get free beer. All attendees can nosh on free red beans and rice, courtesy of the Rivershack Tavern, Ballard said.

The St. Baldrick's event lasts from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday (March 13) at the Rivershack Tavern, located at 3449 River Road in Jefferson.
