Recently, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and 15 other bipartisan Members of Congress sent a letter encouraging President Biden to end the extradition request currently pending against Australian publisher Julian Assange and halt all prosecutorial proceedings against him in an effort to preserve free speech and freedom of the press.

As the Members write in the letter, It is the duty of journalists to seek out sources, including documentary evidence, in order to report to the public on the activities of government. The United States must not pursue an unnecessary prosecution that risks criminalizing common journalistic practices and thus chilling the work of the free press. We urge you to ensure that this case be brought to a close in as timely a manner as possible.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Last night, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) forced the U.S. Senate to vote on his conservative amendment to the U.S. House of Representatives short-term spending bill that would have saved American taxpayers $50 billion over ten weeks.

Dr. Pauls $50 billion cut, one percent of total federal spending, would exclude Social Security, Medicare, the Department of Defense, Military Construction, and the Department of Veterans Affairs and would rescind $30 billion from funds originally appropriated to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

To continue spending money at the current levels will inevitably lead to the bankruptcy of our great nation. My amendment, in order to stave off such a terrible fiscal outcome, would cut approximately 1% of our budgetary spending and help to put us on the path towards fiscal responsibility.In June of this year, the national debt surpassed $32 trillion. Then, in September, the national debt surpassed $33 trillion.You heard that right. It took Congress 90 short days to add a trillion dollars in debt.

Unless we change course, the debt will consume us. Americas future as a nation is not threatened from without but from within. Our mounting debt will ultimately force a day of reckoning.The Congressional Budget Office predicts that we will add an average of $2 trillion in debt every year for the next decade.Using Congressional Budget Office projections, the U.S. government will add over $5 billion to its debt pile every single day for the next ten years.We borrow over $176 million every hour, we borrow $3 million every minute, and we borrow $50,000 every second.

Its only a matter of time before the world wakes up and refuses to buy our debt.This reckless level of borrowing and spending is patently unsustainable. The ever-increasing heights of our debt mean a weak economy, high inflation, and confiscatory tax rates. In other words, todays spending threatens tomorrows prosperity.

ICYMI: Dr. Rand Paul Forces Senate Vote on Conservative Amendment Saving Taxpayers Billions - Senator Rand Paul

Two Republican U.S. senators each with their own set of conservative fans clashed recently over, of all things, the TikTok social media site.

Missouris own Josh Hawley proposed a bill last week that would effectively bar the Chinese-owned site to operate in the U.S., reported The Hill, a political news website.

Hawley pointed to a New York Times story which reported that TikTok engineers based in China have accessed users drivers licenses, addresses and photos of app users. He added that Chinese law requires corporations to make information and data available to the Chinese government.

But Sen. Rand Paul, who has strong libertarian leanings, slammed the door on Hawleys effort to get unanimous consent for his measure.

"If there is a better national strategy to permanently lose elections for a generation, Ive not heard of it, the Kentucky Republican said, referring to TikToks popularity with young people.

Suggesting that Hawley was promoting censorship, Paul compared the effort to McCarthyist paranoia.

Paul said Hawleys move comes while the GOP is complaining that liberal U.S. social media companies are canceling and censoring conservatives.

So without a hint of irony, many of these same, quote, conservatives now agitate to censor viewpoints they dont like, Paul said.

Hawley said his effort was not aimed at curbing free speech, but rather at China spying on the U.S. He pointed out that Congress last year approved removing TikTok from government-owned devices legislation that Paul also opposed.

Paul said the best way to combat TikToks influence is to counter flawed ideas or falsities with more speech and better arguments.

Secretary Austin:

You have broken your promise to the American people not to politicize the military, and your actions have harmed and threaten to further harm institutional norms within our democracy. On June 28, 2022, four days after the Supreme Courts decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization,you issued a memorandum to senior leaders in the Department of Defense (Department) stating that the Department is authorized to pay for government funded, official travel for active duty personnel to receive abortions outside of the state in which they are stationed.

On October 20, 2022, you issued the memorandum Travel for Non-Covered Reproductive Health Care Services, properly referred to as the Departments abortion travel policy (Policy), which directed the Department to pay travel expenses not only for active duty personnel to receive abortions, but for their dependents to receive abortions as well. Importantly, on July 19, 2023, at a hearing on the Departments abortion travel policy, the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness confirmed that this policy extends to late term abortions.

All legislative power is vested in Congress, and the Executive branch is responsible for implementing and enforcing the law. While the Department may issue regulations, it can only do so under the laws authorized and enacted by Congress. But, Congress never authorized the Department to expend funds to facilitate abortions and, until the Policy was issued, the military never facilitated abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or where the life of the mother would be endangered if the unborn child were carried to term. Now taxpayersmany of whom have deeply-held religious and moral objections to abortionsare on the hook to facilitate the very abortions they fundamentally oppose. Indeed, a Marist poll in January 2023 found that 60% of Americans strongly oppose the use of taxpayer dollars to pay for an abortion, consistent with polls taken throughout recent years.

Rather than respect the Supreme Courts decision, you decided to engage the Department, and our men and women in uniform, in a policy debate properly reserved for the legislature. You did so by claiming that Dobbs had readiness, recruiting, and retention implications for the Force. By your own officials admissions, however, the Department has no data to support that claim, and few servicemembers or dependents have utilized the Policy.

After multiple inquiries from Congress on this question,the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness finally confirmed that The Department does not have any data on women being deterred from joining the military for fear of being stationed at an installation or base in a state or nation that has restrictive abortion laws. Finally, a recent letter from the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee revealed that only 12 women have taken advantage of the Policy since its inception, which undercuts your argument that Dobbs has significant recruiting and retention implications.

Our men and women in uniform deserve Senate-confirmed leadership but the current situation began with your original sin of promulgating the Policy. Much has been made in the press about one Senators decision to try and stop your egregious wrongs, without acknowledging the Senate Majority Leaders refusal to bring general and flag officer nominations to the floor until forced to by Republicans.Seeking to circumvent the Senate prerogative of the informal hold practice without addressing the underlying causesthe novel Policy and the subsequent refusal of the Majority to bring these nominees to the floorwill not ultimately reconcile this matter. It could create a toxic precedent with lasting negative effects on future military nominations.

Your decision to issue the Policy politicized the military and placed the wants of a few over the needs of the entire nation.

Do the right thing. Rescind the Policy now.

Rand Paul, byname of Randal Howard Paul, (born January 7, 1963, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.), American politician who was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 2010 and began his term representing Kentucky the following year. He sought his partys nomination in the U.S. presidential election of 2016.

Rand, the middle of five children, was the son of Ron Paul, a physician who, while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives (197677, 197985, and 19972013), helped swing the Republican Party rightward and toward libertarianism. Rand attended but did not graduate from Baylor University, leaving upon his admission to medical school at Duke University. He earned a medical degree in 1988, and he went on to specialize in ophthalmology. In 1989 he met Kelley Ashby, and they married two years later.

After about 15 years of working in partnerships and clinics, Paul established his own medical practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1997 he broke away from the medical board with oversight for certification in his field, the American Board of Ophthalmology, and founded a rival certification authority, the National Board of Ophthalmology. The latter group, the board of which was made up entirely of members of his family, disbanded in 2011. He was also active in the Lions Club International, which runs eye banks and offers humanitarian aid related to eye care around the world.

While a college student, Paul was involved in several conservative organizations, and he worked for his father during the 1988 U.S. presidential election, when his father was campaigning on the Libertarian Party ticket. In 1994 Paul founded the antitaxation group Kentucky Taxpayers United, with himself at the head. Two years later he helped his father defeat an establishment Republican candidate after the elder Paul decided to run for Congress after an absence of more than a decade.

In 2009, riding a wave of anti-Washington sentiment, Rand Paul took advantage of the unpopularity of incumbent Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky and announced that he was running for the seat. Bunning subsequently withdrew from the race, and Paul, aligned with the Tea Party movement, won the Republican primary. He then easily defeated the Democratic candidate in the 2010 general election, despite controversy over a campaign trail statement in which Paul questioned the constitutionality of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

With Utah Senator Mike Lee, Paul founded the Tea Party Caucus upon entering the Senate in 2011. He soon became a vocal opponent of his partys leadership and establishment Republicans. Among the issues he pursued were massive cuts in federal spending. Consistent with his generally libertarian position, Pauls proposed cuts involved not only social programs but also defense allocations. In addition, he sought the abolishment of all foreign aid. Although Paul generally voted on the losing side in arguments over the budget, he was an influential voice on some issues, such as the government shutdown of 2013. Adopting philosophically consistent but not ideologically rigid positions, he forged unlikely alliances with such groups as the American Civil Liberties Union and with such individuals as Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, with whom he introduced legislation softening mandatory minimum sentencing penalties in federal cases. In April 2015 Paul announced that he was entering the U.S. presidential election race of 2016. He suspended his campaign in February 2016. He subsequently offered a tepid endorsement for the partys nominee, Donald Trump, whom he once called a delusional narcissist and orange-faced windbag.

After Trump won the presidential election, Paul became increasingly supportive of him, though he occasionally refused to back the administrations policies. While Paul voted for a massive tax reform bill in 2017, that year he also helped defeat a Republican-led effort to repeal and replace the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA; 2010); he opposed the proposed replacement plan, claiming it was too similar to the PPACA. In November 2017 Paul made additional news when he was attacked by his neighbour, who later pleaded guilty to felony assault; the altercation, which left Paul with bruised lungs and broken ribs, was allegedly motivated by a yard dispute.

In 2019 Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives following a whistleblowers allegation that Trump had extorted a foreign country to investigate one of his political rivals. The proceedings then moved to the Republican-controlled Senate, and Paul made headlines by revealing the alleged whistleblowers name, despite a law protecting the persons identity. In February 2020 Paul voted for Trumps acquittal; the president was acquitted in a near party-line vote. During this time, the coronavirus was spreading around the world, eventually becoming a global pandemic. As schools and businesses closed, the U.S. economy entered an economic downturn that rivaled the Great Depression. In March 2020 Paul became the first senator to test positive for the virus, and he went into a self-quarantine. The following month he resumed his public duties. Paul was elected to a third term in November 2022.
