It also provides a powerful methodology to examine molecular and cellular mechanisms of neuronal patterning, migration, connectivity, and all aspects of neuronal function including locomotion, perception, cognition, memory, and behavior. This course teaches genetic approaches to study the nervous system and provides insights into the genetic nature and genetic models of neurological and psychiatric diseases. NROS 330– Principles of Neuroanatomy: Cells to Systems (3 units) Course Description: This course presents neuroanatomy in the context of nervous system function. Rather than focusing on a single species, this course considers the functions that nervous systems must provide and the anatomical strategies used by diverse species to do so, with an emphasis on fundamental concepts that are shared across much of the animal kingdom. Hence, it is a comparative neuroanatomy course. Examples of evolutionary convergence and divergence are presented. In addition, this course aims to be integrative: (i) it deals with nervous system structure at multiple levels, from cellular to regional to functional circuitry spanning the entire neuroaxis; (ii) students will learn how a broad range of techniques can be used to reveal neuroanatomical relationships. Instructor: TBA Lecture: MWF 1:00-1:50 Prerequisites: MCB 181R/L & ECOL 182, CHEM 151/152 with labs. NROS 487 – To Know a Brain: A Neuroethical Approach (3 units) Course Description: To understand the forces and constraints affecting the evolution of animal brains, hence animal behavior, and allowing brains to adapt to and perform well under different and changing environmental conditions. The course will provide students with an appreciation of strategies used to observe, analyze, and study brain organization and function and will allow students to relate their knowledge to the study of animal behavior in an evolutionary context. In this Lecture, we specifically consider thosemedical devices that are computer based, and are therefore referred to as medical instruments. Further, the medical instruments we discuss are those that incorporate system theory into their designs. We divide these types of instruments into those that provide continuous observation and those that provide a single snapshot of health information. These instruments are termed patient monitoring devices and diagnostic devices, respectively.Within this Lecture, we highlight some of the common system theory techniques that are part of the toolkit of medical device engineers in industry. These techniques include the pseudorandom binary sequence, adaptive filtering, wavelet transforms, the autoregressive moving average model with exogenous input, artificial neural networks, fuzzy models, and fuzzy control. Because the clinical usage requirements for patient monitoring and diagnostic devices are so high, system theory is the preferred substitute for heuristic, empirical processing during noise artifact minimization and classification.
