Summer Opportunity for Students

Well, instead of sitting in another typical summer school course, updating your Facebook status, how would you like to travel to another country and possibly earn college credits for teaching about HIV/AIDS in AFRICA? Well, its possible! Support For International Change is looking for motivated and dedicated students who have an interest in taking their education and spreading their knowledge to rural villages in Eastern Africa. SIC offers structured 8 and 12 week volunteer programs open to students and recent alumni of participating schools, including The University of Arizona.

Support for International Change (SIC) focuses on teaching community members and school children how to protect themselves from HIV and how to care for those who are already infected by AIDS. Our volunteer satisfaction ratings have consistently been very high, and we are committed to further improving our programs and we would like you to be our next group of volunteers for Summer 2012!!!

Each program begins with an intensive, expert-led orientation. A week into orientation, volunteers move into a homestay with a host Tanzanian family. After orientation, your primary work as a volunteer will be to run an HIV awareness campaign within your community. The majority of your time will be spent teaching, lesson planning, and training peer educators, and you will also be involved in community assessment work within your village. In addition to these responsibilities, we urge volunteers to take the lead on other projects related to our work.

We believe that education is essential in slowing the spread of HIV/AIDS in northern Tanzania. Each year, student volunteers bring new energy and talents to our work!!!

Student Health Advocacy Committee

The Student Health Advocacy Committee (SHAC) is a highly exclusive organization under ASUA acting as the liaison between Campus Health and the student body. We are currently accepting applications for Spring 2012 and encourage you to apply. Last year, we helped train students in continuous chest compression CPR, hosted healthy cooking classes at the Rec, helped vaccinate the homeless at Hopefest, began implementing first aid kits in the residence halls, raised money to contribute to Hopefest during our annual 5K Run for Your Life event, hosted the second annual Sun Safety Week, began working to install sunscreen dispensers on campus, and started a campaign to make the main UA campus smoke-free. This year we hope to continue advancing our initiatives and reach out to even more students on campus. As such, we find ourselves growing fast, and therefore we are looking for highly motivated individuals to join our team to bring health and wellness to our community. We are looking for different types of people, with a range of skills, including marketing, fundraising, advertising, leadership, or any health related knowledge. The only things required for our applicants are a strong work ethic, an intense passion for health, a desire to help others and a minimum GPA of 3.0 (no exceptions). Key themes include EVA physiology working in a pressure suit in the vacuum of space, basic EVA life support and work support, Thermal Protection System (TPS) inspections and repairs, and discussions of the physical challenges of an EVA. Parazynski covers the common injuries and significant risks during EVAs, as well as physical training required to prepare for EVAs. Most online bachelor #39;s degrees in exercise physiology typically allow students to complete coursework at their own pace within a specific time frame for each assignment and class. However, almost all programs will require students to complete a clinical practicum or internship, usually during a student #39;s senior year, before being eligible to graduate. It is also important to earn certification before entering the workforce, as most employers will require instructors to be certified. Most trainers need to be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before applying for other certifications. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) lists accredited organizations that offer sports training certification.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Molecular & Integrative Physiology

The Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan offers summer fellowship programs to support undergraduate students that are interested in research in physiology and/or biomedical sciences. Any student who is currently enrolled at any degree granting University or College is invited to apply, with preference given to those students interested in a career in research. In general: 1) Biological science students will join our traditional Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) 2) Students from quantitative science majors (e.g. engineering, math, computer science) will join our Short Term Educational Program (STEP) towards Digestive and Metabolic Physiology 3) Underrepresented groups and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds will join out Summer Undergraduate Research In Physiology (SURP) program. Each student will be matched, based on his or her interests, to a laboratory that is led by a faculty member of the Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology or of the University of Michigan Medical School. The selected laboratories are involved in nationally recognized research, in topics such as hormones and signal transduction, obesity and diabetes, reproduction and circadian rhythms including sleep, gastrointestinal physiology including digestive diseases, and many aspects of cardiovascular disease. There will be a research forum at the end of the summer in which fellows will present their work, as well as opportunities to attend research seminars throughout the summer. Dr. Donato Romagnolo, Professor in Nutritional Sciences, will be leading a new program on Mediterranean Diet and Health that will be offered part in Tucson (1 week) and part in Verona (Italy, 3 weeks) in Summer 2013. The program will be offered through UA’s Study Abroad Office and has been approved to grant students 6 credits (NSC455SA). Students will learn about the biology, molecular biology and biochemistry of Mediterranean foods and diet and impact in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. There is also an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in food preparation with the help of Italian instructors. If of interest, the syllabus can be adapted to offer a writing emphasis option through additional assignments. Students will need to get approval of major advisors to gain credit hours from this class.
