Russia reclaiming lost island names in Oceania – Russia Beyond

https://mikluho-maclay.ru

A descendant of famous explorer Nikolay Mikluho-Maklay is restoring original Russian geographical names in Oceania. Over 70 locations have already made the list. The data will be included in Russias updated World Atlas, commissioned by President Vladimir Putin.

A Russian flag flew over one of the villages of Papua New Guinea in 2019. The local aboriginals were greeting an expedition led by the great-nephew - and namesake - of the famed anthropologist Nikolay Mikluho-Maklay. 150 years ago, his great-great-grand uncles hut had stood where the flag was flying. They remember Russia really well here, and the man from the moon - a moniker given to Maklai for his skin color, Nikolay Miklukho-Maklai Jr. says. After his 2019 visit, the village was also subsequently renamed in his ancestors honor.

Together with colleagues from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Miklukho-Maklai Jr., a leading expert at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN), created a detailed chart with the names and coordinates of all the places in Oceania discovered by Russian explorers in 19-21 centuries.

During field trips in 2017 and 2019, with the aid of Australian archives, the researchers managed to establish the existence of 71 toponyms, of which eight had prior, original names. The rest were given new names.

The Russian scientists wish to preserve the memory of their forebears discoveries, at least on Russian maps.

The Maklai Shore - the north-eastern shore of the island of New Guinea, was renamed Rai Coast, a title borrowed from a nearby village in the early 20th century, at the time of German colonization. A similar fate befell some 50 other locations, originally named by Miklukho-Maklai and Russian sailors. There were also subsequent changes made by Australians.

Here is a list of locations in Oceania that carry their Russian names on international maps to this day.

Russia and Oceania possess a strong historical bond and a relationship that has lasted for more than two centuries. 19th century Russian circumnavigators, Soviet expeditions of the 1930s and 1970s, followed by Russian ones in 2017 and 2019 have all contributed greatly to the study of the regional aboriginal peoples and the advancement of their way of life.

The residents of several villages pass down stories of Miklukho-Maklais contributions in the form of metal tools, as well as some Russian words that ended up in the local language - Bongu. Words like topor (axe), kukuruza (corn) and arbuz (watermelon).

While carrying out his anthropological research in Australia, Milkukho-Maklai founded the first biological lab in the Southern Hemisphere. Aside from his research trips, the remainder of the Russians travels to Oceania in the 19th century were more or less transit stops. The sailors demonstrated to locals the Russian flag, refilled on food and fuel, which they swapped for metal weapons, and collected information on the settlement of Australia by English colonists. Using that knowledge, captain Ivan Krusenstern in 1823 published the Atlas of the Southern Sea - one of the only ones so accurate that it was used by sailors the world over to navigate the Southern Pacific until the start of the 20th century.

Today, the memory of Russian exploits in Oceania remains in part thanks to the family foundation, run by Nikolai Miklukho-Maklai Jr.

The Russians were doing research - not conquest, claims Sofya Pale, lead specialist of the Center for Asia-Picifc Studies at RANs Institute of Oriental Studies. Discovering another unknown island, the captains would travel around it to map the coastline and put it on the map. While there, they would either talk to the locals and find out the name, or, if the island was uninhabited, make up one of their own and lay in the coordinates for its newfound location into their journal, she adds. This information would then be sent to Russias maritime department, where it would be classified. The English, meanwhile, were a naval superpower, and anchored their ships in every port they happened upon.

Archives at the State Library of New South Wales, Australia, together with the sailors journal entries, enabled researchers to discover a number of the lost names. A chart was created, listing in alphabetical order the Russian and current names, together with the coordinates, circumstances of discovery and current political and administrative status. The resulting research was published in the book Russia and Oceania, and can be viewed in this short film.

The collated data is also being used in the creation of a new world atlas, commissioned by President Vladimir Putin in 2018. According to the Russian leader, the current information has sustained a number of edits, many of them regarding old Russian toponyms: Were not about to force our views on others but to abstain from reacting at a blatant twisting of historical and, in this case, geographical truths, is not within our rights, Putin said in April 2018 at a meeting of the board of trustees of the Russian Geographical Society, which he chairs. The naming project was assigned to The Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography, the Ministry of Defense and the Russian Geographical Society.

Each country has the right to assign such names as it seems fit, Miklukho-Maklai Jr. says. Renaming objects or listing alternate names in brackets for posterity is something we can only do on our own maps.

All Whites set to go head to head with minnows in Oceania World Cup qualifying – Stuff.co.nz

The All Whites are set to begin their qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in March next year.

The All Whites are set to face at least one Oceania minnow, if not two, when qualifying for the 2022 Fifa World Cup begins next March, raising the prospect of some one-sided scorelines.

All eleven Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) members are set to take part in the first stage of World Cup qualifying under a proposal submitted to Fifa and made public on Tuesday.

They will be split into a group of six and a group of five, based on their Fifa rankings, with group stage matches to be played in March and June 2021.

The All Whites, ranked 122nd in the world, will therefore potentially have to play one or two of American Samoa, ranked 192nd; Samoa, ranked 194th; Tonga, ranked 203rd; and the Cook Islands, who arent ranked at all teams they would likely beat handsomely if they made a 100 per cent effort with a full-strength squad.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, which will be contested on a home-and-away basis next September, with the winners advancing to the finals, which will be contested on a home-and-away basis the following month.

Whichever team comes out on top will then have the November and March windows to prepare for the intercontinental home-and-away playoff the top Oceania team must win in June 2022 to book their place at the World Cup in Qatar, scheduled for November and December that year.

Fifa is yet to determine where the Oceania teams opponent will come from, with the fifth-placed Asian team, the fifth-place South American team, or the fourth-placed North and Central American team the three possible options.

The All Whites last qualified for the World Cup in 2010, when they finished top in Oceania then beat Bahrain 1-0 on aggregate in the intercontinental playoff in November 2009.

They were beaten 9-3 by Mexico at the same stage ahead of the 2014 event and 2-0 by Peru ahead of the 2018 event.

Danny Hays side have secured a friendly against world No 1 Belgium this October, but it remains to be seen if the Covid-19 pandemic will allow that fixture in Brussels to go ahead.

Hay has only had two matches with the All Whites since taking charge last August losses to the Republic of Ireland and Lithuania in November last year.

NZ Football

All Whites coach Danny Hay is looking forward to hopefully playing Belgium in Brussels in October.

The group stage of World Cup qualifying will likely allow him to select some of the younger players he has on offer, as passage to the final four should be easy to secure. That could come in handy, as he will also take charge of the OlyWhites under-23 team for the Tokyo Olympics, if they go ahead as scheduled next July.

In recent times in mens football, the 11 OFC nations have typically been split into a stronger group of seven New Zealand, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea and a weaker group of four American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands.

The All Whites havent played any of the group of four since 2001, when they had a 2-0 win over the Cook Islands.

That was the same year Australia famously beat American Samoa 31-0, with Archie Thompson scoring 13 goals.

Oceania World Cup qualifying was originally meant to start in August and September this year, but, as it has with most things, the Covid-19 pandemic forced a delay.

The 2022 World Cup is the last one where the top Oceania team will have to win a playoff, with direct entry set to be on offer from 2026 when it expands from 32 teams to 48.

All Whites to have bumper home season in 2021? – RNZ

Home matches a rare commodity for the All Whites, but coach Danny Hay believes that trend could well be reversed next year.

All Whites coach Danny Hay. Photo: Photosport

The Oceania Football Confederation have submitted a revamped plan for the region's 2022 World Cup qualifiers to governing body Fifa.

Oceania's 11 teams would be split into two groups, with each playing group stage games in a central location across the March and June international windows.

The format could give the All Whites up to five home games in 2021, if the team reaches the final and New Zealand hosts one of the group stages.

Hay was optimistic the latter would happen.

"We'd like to hope that we'd get at least one of those entire windows based in New Zealand.

"We've got the facilities and obviously we can accommodate a number of teams as well.

"That for me would be exciting, to bring the players back and play locally here in New Zealand because we obviously haven't had that many opportunities to do that."

If the plan is given the green light by Fifa, it will make for a busy year for Hay and many of the country's top male players.

The All Whites will play two of their group matches in March and the other three in the June window, while for Hay and a number in the squad it will then be straight into their Tokyo Olympics campaign.

Assuming the All Whites finish in the top two of their Oceania qualifying group, that will be quickly followed a home-and-away semifinal in September, with a spot in the home-and-away final in October on the line.

The winner of Oceania qualifying advances to the intercontinental playoff in June, 2022 with a spot at the World Cup in Qatar on the line.

"We've been kept up to date, so they were no surprises there," Hay said of the qualifying plan submitted to Fifa by OFC.

"We knew that it was going to be an 11-team qualification series. Obviously with Covid we were well aware as well that it was going to be pushed back to 2021.

"We're just going to keep on preparing. Hopefully with Covid it does start to settle down and we can get lots of games under our belt next year."

While planning for a busy 2021, Hay had also been keeping a close eye on the here and now.

As well as watching the Kiwi players in action around the world, the former All Whites defender had been keenly following the fortunes of the Phoenix in the A-League.

And Hay had no hesitation placing the second-placed Wellington side as favourites to lift the title.

"I just look at the way they're playing, the sense of togetherness in amongst the squad.

"They seem to be in a really good space, Ufuk Talay has done a really good job.

"Yeah, I genuinely see them going all the way."

Hay also commented on Chris Wood's feats in the English Premier League.

The Kiwi striker finished with 14 goals as the EPL season wrapped up over the weekend, a new single season record for the Burnley club he plays and his third straight season in double figures in the English top-flight

A former Premier League player himself, Hay said those kinds of achievements were inspiring.

"14 goals over the course of a season in arguably the strongest and best football competition in the world is pretty impressive.

"It's great that young players in particular that aspire to be professional footballers or play at the highest level can see a Kiwi doing it week in and week out.

"It's special. We need those sorts of role models."

Bollinger delivers second of three FRCs to be homeported in Guam – WorkBoat

Bollinger Shipyards LLC has delivered the 154x25 fast response cutter (FRC) Oliver Henry to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Fla. This is the 163rd vessel Bollinger has delivered to the Coast Guard over a 35-year period and the 40th FRC delivered under the current program.

The Oliver Henry is the second of three FRCs to be homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam, increasing the presence for the U.S. Coast Guard in the Indo-Pacific Theater. Additionally, later in 2020, Bollinger will be delivering the first of six FRCs that will be homeported in Manama, Bahrain, which will replace the Island Class Patrol Boats supporting the Patrol Forces Southwest Asia, the U. S. Coast Guards largest unit outside of the U.S.

For the FRC, which has a draft of 96, Bollinger is using a proven, in-service parent craft design based on theDamenStan Patrol Boat 4708.Main propulsion comes from twinMTU20V4000 M93L diesel engines, producing 2,900 hp each.

The homeporting of three FRCs in Guam is part of the Coast Guards doubling down on Oceania, allowing more frequent and longer patrols in an area where the Coast Guard has increased its presence over the past 18 months and is aligned with the U.S. position on maritime security in the Indo-Pacific.

Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that the United States champions a free and open Indo-Pacific. In a speech last year, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Karl Schultz stressed the strategic importance of the services presence in the region saying, Were on a trajectory where the geostrategic importance of the Oceania region has not been higher here in decades, and its a place that the Coast Guards looking to be part of the whole-of-government solution set.

While the last 20 weeks of the Oliver Henrys build occurred during the Covid-19 global pandemic, Bollinger undertook precautions to ensure the health and safety of employees and maintain its delivery schedule. In addition to increased and enhanced sanitization practices across the shipyard, Bollinger enacted more liberal leave and remote work policies as well as altered shift schedules to promote social distancing.

Bollinger is proud to continue enhancing and supporting the Coast Guards operational presence and mission in the Indo-Pacific region with the delivery of the Oliver Henry, Bollinger President and CEO Ben Bordelon, said in a statement announcing the delivery. Building ships for the U.S. Coast Guard provides critical assets to bolster our national security interests, both domestic and abroad. We are proud and humbled to be partners in the FRC program.

Each FRC is named for an enlisted Coast Guard hero who distinguished himself or herself in the line of duty. Oliver Henry was the first minority service member to move from the wardroom to the engine room and rose rapidly through the ranks of enlisted mechanics. He was one of the services first minority warrant officers and served over 15 years of his 26-year career as a warrant. As a leader and role model, he mentored many of the next generation of service leaders, including officers and enlisted men. His career exemplified the Coast Guards core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty and serves as an inspiration to other enlisted men and women.

Visitor Arrivals to Hawai’i Plummeted in June – Big Island Now

Hawaii Tourism Authority. PC: HTA

Visitor arrivals to Hawaii were abysmal in June, dropping more than 98% year-over-year.

The Hawaii Tourism Authoritys (HTA) Tourism Research Division said the primary and obvious culprit was the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting consequence of an out-of-state traveler quarantine, which stretched through July and is now in place until at least the end of August.

Exemptions to the quarantine included only travel for essential reasons like work or healthcare. The interisland quarantine was in effect for the first half of June, ending on June 15. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also continued to enforce its No Sail Order on all cruise ships.

In June, a total of 17,068 visitors traveled to Hawaii by air service compared to 951,628 total visitors (by air and cruise ships) during the same period a year ago.

Most of the visitors were from US West (10,149, -97.8%) and US East (5,596, -97.7%). A few visitors came from Japan (40, -100.0%) and Canada (57, -99.7%). There were 1,226 visitors from All Other International Markets (-98.9%). Many of these visitors were from Guam, and a small number of visitors were from Oceania, Other Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific Islands. Total visitor days dropped 94.6% year-over-year.

A total of 110,570 trans-Pacific air seats serviced the Hawaiian Islands in June, down 90.6% from a year ago. There were no direct flights or scheduled seats from Japan, Canada, Oceania, and Other Asia, and very few scheduled seats from US East (-94.5%), US West (-88.4%), and Other countries (-54.5%).

Year-to-Date 2020

In the first half of 2020, total visitor arrivals decreased 58.5% to 2,156,234 visitors, with significantly fewer arrivals by air service (-58.4% to 2,126,443) and by cruise ships (-61.0% to 29,792) compared to the same period a year ago. Total visitor days dropped 55.2%.

Year-to-date, visitor arrivals by air service decreased from US West (-59.0% to 927,890), US East (-55.3% to 523,780), Japan (-59.9% to 294,295), Canada (-49.8% to 155,821), and All Other International Markets (-64.7% to 224,657).

Earnings Miss: Oceania Healthcare Limited Missed EPS And Analysts Are Revising Their Forecasts – Yahoo Finance

Oceania Healthcare Limited (NZSE:OCA) came out with its yearly results last week, and we wanted to see how the business is performing and what industry forecasters think of the company following this report. Things were not great overall, with a surprise (statutory) loss of NZ$0.022 per share on revenues of NZ$196m, even though the analysts had been expecting a profit. Earnings are an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance, look at what the analysts are forecasting for next year, and see if there's been a change in sentiment towards the company. With this in mind, we've gathered the latest statutory forecasts to see what the analysts are expecting for next year.

View our latest analysis for Oceania Healthcare

earnings-and-revenue-growth

Following the latest results, Oceania Healthcare's three analysts are now forecasting revenues of NZ$225.5m in 2021. This would be a meaningful 15% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Losses are predicted to fall substantially, shrinking 71% to NZ$0.0064. Before this latest report, the consensus had been expecting revenues of NZ$211.7m and NZ$0.016 per share in losses. There's been a pretty noticeable increase in sentiment, with the analysts upgrading revenues and making a loss per share in particular.

Despite these upgrades, the analysts have not made any major changes to their price target of NZ$1.09, implying that their latest estimates don't have a long term impact on what they think the stock is worth. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. Currently, the most bullish analyst values Oceania Healthcare at NZ$1.10 per share, while the most bearish prices it at NZ$1.08. Still, with such a tight range of estimates, it suggeststhe analysts have a pretty good idea of what they think the company is worth.

One way to get more context on these forecasts is to look at how they compare to both past performance, and how other companies in the same industry are performing. It's clear from the latest estimates that Oceania Healthcare's rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 15% revenue growth noticeably faster than its historical growth of 3.0%p.a. over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 8.9% next year. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect Oceania Healthcare to grow faster than the wider industry.

The most obvious conclusion is that the analysts made no changes to their forecasts for a loss next year. Pleasantly, they also upgraded their revenue estimates, and their forecasts suggest the business is expected to grow faster than the wider industry. The consensus price target held steady at NZ$1.09, with the latest estimates not enough to have an impact on their price targets.

With that said, the long-term trajectory of the company's earnings is a lot more important than next year. We have forecasts for Oceania Healthcare going out to 2023, and you can see them free on our platform here.

That said, it's still necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Oceania Healthcare , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

World Rugby makes stand clear on Nasilasila situation – Fijivillage

World Rugby says it does not condone any person convicted of a serious crime and currently serving their sentence undertaking any official rugby activities under Union jurisdiction.

In a statement released last night, World Rugby says following reaction from many areas to reports regarding the alleged participation of Amenoni Nasilasila for the Namosi team in Fiji, this position has been clearly communicated to the relevant bodies who have confirmed that the player in question was not permitted to participate in such activity.

It further says rugbys core values are fundamental to the game and World Rugby will continue to drive positive action to ensure they are reflected across the sport, on and off the field.

The world governing body for rugby says as such, World Rugby is fully supportive of and will continue to work with Oceania Rugby and its Unions on the important work being undertaken in the region in partnership with ChildFund and UN Women.

Nasilasila who raped a 24-year-old woman in a settlement in Sigatoka on 22nd December 2018 was spotted training with the Namosi rugby team earlier this month at the Suva Grammar School ground.

On 29th October last year, Nasilasila also took part in a scrimmage session between the Tuvalu 7s team and the Wardens Team which was preparing for the Oceania Rugby Sevens tournament.

This was only five days after he was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment by Judge Justice Daniel Goundar in the Lautoka High Court.

Another down day on the market; Oceania reports weak earnings – goodreturns.co.nz

New Zealand shares fell, led lower by Oceania Healthcare after it reported annual earnings significantly weaker due to covid-19.Thursday, July 23rd 2020, 6:15PM

by BusinessDesk

The S&P/NZX 50 Index declined 29.56 points, or 0.3 percent, to 11,693.41. Within the index, 24 stocks rose, 19 fell, and seven were unchanged. Turnover was $136.4 million.

Oceania reported a net loss of $13.6 million in the year ended May after writing down the value of its property portfolio by $22.5 million. It reported a $45.4 million profit in the prior year.

Its share price fell 3.9 percent to 99 cents but had been steadily gaining in the run up to the result.

Oceania was going to have a flat 12 months anyway, but that revaluation headline spooked the market, Brad Gordon, an investment adviser at Hobson Wealth said.

Other retirement stocks had a mixed response to the sectors first earnings report post-covid.

Arvida Group declined 1.2 percent to $1.62 and Summerset Group Holdings fell 0.5 percent to $7.85. Ryman Healthcare gained 0.4 percent to $13.64 and Metlifecare held at $5.91.

Stuart Williams, head of equities at Nikko Asset Management, said that, even within sectors, various stocks in the benchmark had been moving in different directions.

It is just normal investors' interpretation of company specifics as opposed to some global overview, he said.

Chorus dropped 2.6 percent to $7.25 as the Commerce Commission began consulting on regulatory changes that will affect the companys future return expectations.

Spark New Zealand fell 0.9 percent to $4.865 after gaining almost 10 percent this month. Gordon said this had been driven by steady demand for yield stocks.

The catalyst has been people rolling off term deposits and looking for alternatives, he said.

Vector, which is also considered a yield play, rose 2.9 percent to $3.93, bringing its gain this month to more than 8 percent.

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare dropped 1.8 percent to $35.35, the strong kiwi dollar is acting as a headwind for the exporter which is trading at near its record high.

Auckland International Airport dropped 1.7 percent to $6.31 while Air New Zealand rose 0.8 percent to $1.33.

Z Energy extended its rally after reporting better than expected first-quarter cost savings and improved market share. The stock rose 1.7 percent to $2.94.

New Zealand Refining Company, in which Z Energy is a cornerstone shareholder, rose 1.5 percent to 69 cents, extending yesterdays gains after it announced it had detailed planning underway to simplify the refinery.

Argosy Property rose 3.3 percent to $1.27, posting the days biggest gain, but other property stocks were mixed.

Stride Property and Kiwi Property Group each dropped 0.5 percent to $1.94 and $1.07 respectively. Vital Healthcare Property Trust gained 1.9 percent at $2.66 and Goodman Property Trust rose 1.4 percent to $2.22.

Sky Network Television opened stronger after Jarden upgraded the stock and said establishing a sustainable operating model was not an insurmountable task. However, the early gains faded, and the stock ended flat at 14 cents.

Outside the benchmark index, Cavalier Corp leapt 22.7 percent to 27 cents. The wool and carpet company today said stock levels had decreased "significantly" to about $35 million, on the back of "stronger than anticipated" trading through June, particularly in wool sales.

Holidays That Might Have Been: Oceania Road Trip – Impact Magazine – Impact Magazine

Right now, I should be meeting my partner at Christchurch Airport to celebrate the end of my year abroad and 6 months apart to begin a mega trip across New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and Fiji.

Instead, the height of my lockdown has been sitting in a slightly broken, panic-bought hot tub that has only just managed to reach about 35 degrees. The plan was to spend six weeks in a campervan exploring these destinations; island hopping, hiking up mountains and kayaking. But then COVID-19 hit and ruined all of our plans. In March of 2020 the majority of us on exchange had to return to the UK with less than a moments notice.

There would have been bungee jumping, parasailing and kayaking but instead its Netflix, Netflix and maybe some Disney+ to spice things up

The first four weeks of our trip would have been exploring New Zealand, driving from Christchurch, across the South Island and to the tip of the North. Stopping to peer into Hobbit holes, dipping into thermal pools and spotting whales off the coast of Kaikoura. The South Island loop was definitely what I was most looking forward to, particularly revisiting Queenstown the adventure capital of the world as the first time I went I broke my wrist skiing on the bunny slope, how embarrassing! There would have been bungee jumping, parasailing, and kayaking but instead its Netflix, Netflix and maybe some Disney+ to spice things up!

Fiji was next on the agenda, a week on golden beaches and snorkelling. A relaxing little break before a continuation of the campervan trip, this time in the land of Oz. Driving from Sydney to Cairns in a 30-degree winter. Whilst lots of the walks across New South Wales were decimated by bushfires earlier on this year, there were so many still on my to-do list. There will be a next time Im sure!

Its not quite Sydney, Australia, but its Brighton Pier

Major FOMO is occurring right now, especially when all of my targeted ads are about the most amazing pictures of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. From a selfish point of view, because everybody else is in the same situation I feel a little less bummed out about not being able to go. Its better to put it on hold until things return to normal rather than trying to go now and miss out on most of the fun because things are closed due to COVID-19.

Instead of adventuring this summer, Im spending it working down at the local pub and Im glad to be getting back to a bit of normality. Its not quite Sydney, Australia but its Brighton Pier and if you squint really hard, you may mistake them for the same thing.

NZ’s iconic Eden Park will be a new home for Oceania esports – FutureFive New Zealand

When you think of possible New Zealand locations for esports centres, would the major sporting stadium Eden Park come to mind? Yes, Eden Park famously home to physical sports like cricket, the Rugby World Cup and the All Blacks, will now be home to the Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre.

This centre will act as a hub for the Oceania esports community, with streaming practice rooms for teams to scrim and a broadcast area for live matches and commentary, alongside LAN areas for large scale events, and 5G and fibre capabilities.

Permanent streaming booths featuring the latest in broadcast technology will be available for local and visiting content creators to use, as well as chill out areas and space for the gaming and esports communities to host events and expand.

New Zealands national stadium is iconic and at the centre of many special memories for both Kiwis and tourists around the world. The Esports High Performance Centre will showcase Eden Parks ongoing ability to diversify, evolve, and be at the forefront of new technology, says Eden Parks CEO Nick Sautner.

The centre will also act as a training centre for esports stars like League of Legends team Dire Wolves. Dire Wolves has just revealed a huge expansion including rosters in EA Sports FIFA, Overwatch, NBA 2K, and VALORANT, professional practice spaces, stream booths and broadcast capabilities.

The Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre will also act as a community hub for gaming, hosting weekly leagues for groups such as the fighting game community Standing Fierce.

The Kiwi esports scene is an extremely passionate and vibrant one, and seeing our industry and community establish a new base in the home of New Zealand sport alongside titans of national culture such as the All Blacks and BLACKCAPS, is really exciting for us, says Standing Fierce community manager David Douglas.

The grassroots community in New Zealand has enormous potential, and having a venue like this, not just for our pro players to train, but to nurture and support local talent and fandoms, where we can hold events, network and exchange ideas will be hugely beneficial to the Oceanic scene.

Esports investment and advisory firm Guinevere Capital is backing the build. It has also been involved in launching esports centres at the United Kingdom's Twickenham Stadium and the Esports High Performance Centre in Australias historic Sydney Cricket Ground.

Guinevere Capital managing director David Harris says the Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre creates a melting pot of esports and gaming communities.

Whilst esports is a hugely modern industry which brings a new brand of athlete, setting up a facility like this in Eden Park, which holds immense legacy and cultural significance, feels fitting. Esports is going to be a huge part of New Zealands future, and were proud that we get to be a part of that.

The centre is expected to open sometime in Q3 (July-September) 2020.

By the numbers: ITRA’s report on trail running in 2020 – Canadian Running Magazine

The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) released its first infographic rundown of where the sport stands in 2020, looking at races from 2013 to 2019, and there are a lot of interesting statistics that off-road runners are going to be interested in seeing. From the number of racers and the volume of trail events worldwide to the ratio of men to women competing in the sport, the ITRA put plenty of information into this report. As much as we would like to dive into every stat, we cant, so weve picked a few of the numbers that interested us the most.

The report looked at five million individual results from more than 1.7 million runners (meaning there were quite a few repeat racers in the study pool) worldwide between 2013 and 2019. During that time, 77 per cent of racers were men, while 23 per cent were women. Trail running is very lopsided when it comes to the number of men versus women participants, but the percentage of female participants actually doubled from 2013 to 2019. In 2013, just 13 per cent of all trail race participants were women, but last year, that number was up to 26 per cent. Theres still a long way to go before men and women get anywhere close to equal representation in the sport, but theres no denying that trail running is slowly edging toward that.

RELATED: New study reports more female than male runners for the first time ever

Canada is among the top countries for female participation in trail events, with women making up 39 per cent of all runners. Were tied with Argentina for the third-highest percentage of women participants, sitting behind Finland (43 per cent) and Australia (41 per cent).

The ITRA Performance Index (PI) is used to evaluate the speed and level of different runners around the world, even if theyve never raced against one another. The scale has a maximum of 1,000 points, with a runners score corresponding to their results from every race theyve entered. The report broke down every continents average PI (looking at every runner from those regions), and its a tight race between Europe, North America and Oceania. European racers eked out a win for the top spot with a continental average PI of 443. North America is just behind at 442 and Oceania comes in at 438. Africa isnt too far behind in fourth at 408, and then South America and Asia come in fifth and sixth with PI scores of 393 and 362.

RELATED: Ultras produce the most obsessive runners

In the seven years that the ITRA surveyed, there were 25,700 trail races held around the world in 195 countries or self-governed regions. This is a massive number of races, meaning on average, there were more than 3,600 trail events held each year between 2013 and 2019. The ITRA report broke these races down into seven categories, ranging from XXS (the shortest and least difficult races) to XXL (the longest and hardest runs). On both ends of the spectrum, there were 200,000 or so participants who raced in around 1,000 events worldwide. These are presumably the 5K to 10K trail races on one end and the massive 200-milers (or longer) on the other.

What trail runners apparently prefer are the Small and Medium races, right in the middle of the spectrum. These events made up 54 per cent of all trail races between 2013 and 2019, and the same amount of finishers, 54 per cent, ran in these events.

Looting and the Ministry of Truth – LA Progressive

Dogs have six tails.

If this is an opinion someone wishes to hold, fine. If mental illness isnt playing a role in the formation of this opinion, fine. If this is an opinion someone wishes to broadcast publicly, I would then expect others to rebuke this individual. Dont call the police! And leave the shotgun where it is! But I would expect family and friends to see in the reality this person advocates something at best questionable.

Facts matter. Uninformed opinions is another matter.

Im sitting in the sunroom at the senior complex where I live when two white women enter and take seats. The space is too small for two to have a conversation while another reads or works at a computer. So I save my work and greet the two women. Im familiar with these two. As things go here in this building and in this small village located in Wisconsin, they are the nice ones, although one of the women informed me a week or so back that her masks were slow to deliverbecause of the protesters!

So here we are and its not long before the conversation really begins. Despite my presence!

Its about the looters. Those destroyers of property. And both women are looking at me, one directly and the other looking askance at me.

Perhaps its because of my presence!

These looters destroyed property.

Her friend still looking askance at me chimed in: And destroying property is wrong.

Neither women referred to George Floyd. Neither asked how I felt about this death. How I felt about the protesters. Black Lives Matter.

But there were Italians! Back in the day! The second woman volunteers a story about her struggling Italian family ending the narrative with a what about them? Huh?

All lives matter!

That would be racist, I tell her. Wouldnt it?

Your family of Italians became white at some point!

And now the first woman wants to offer me proof of those looters. She has video! On her cell phone! Actual footage of looters!

Democrats are paying these looters to destroy property! Blacks are being led by the nose by these democrats!

Here!

Shes trying to hand me her cell phone! She a nice one here. A friendly one. Someone, Im sure who would never think herself racist or anti-Black.

Im Black last I checked. And shes asking me in the second week of July to look at videos of looters!

I dont need to see your footage of looters. I think by now I know how to research on the Internet.

That didnt sit well with her. She has a son! And her son sent this footage of looters!

Wonderful!

Is it possible to inform her that her son might be living in a reality that doesnt recognize my humanity? Is it possible for me to ask her how did she raise this son to interact with people of color? Is it possible for me to ask why would she even be proud of a son who would send her footage of looters, as if to suggest that all the protesters, the Blacks and whites and Latinx and Indigenous protesters, are all looters controlled by Democrats?

And what reality do these two women live in if not one that denies the legitimacy of 400 years of systemic oppression and injustice suffered by Black, Indigenous, Latinx people in the US. Its not possible, however, to recognize how these two women actively engage in the crafting of a narrative that erases an historical events and replace it with a narrative that consists only of looters, claiming this then to be the truth, the only truth, and nothing but the truth.

For what happens to George Floyd? What happens to the protesters and their claims of injustice? Their claims of white supremacy?

Its hard to respond to such ignorance. Deliberate ignorance.

These radicals are dangerous.

Im a radical! (And thats what she wants to hear, isnt it?).

I could show you some sources for information

No, I dont need to do that. I have my son

Here are the Americans I decided long ago, after Trump took office, that I couldnt embrace because to do so would be to embrace ignorance, deliberate ignorance. White supremacy.

Racism was the elephant in that sun room, sitting among us.

Here are the people suspicious of reality as described by those who are Black, Latinx, and Indigenous. As a Black in America, I know that this form of suspicion might also point to a refusal to accept Black people as anything worthy of their attention. To do so, would be to acknowledge their responsibility in the history of conquest and enslavement.

Anti-Black is a symptom Trump shares with many white Americans. We are living in an America that cant accept the truthand that truth is that white America today is implicated in the maintenance of white supremacy.

Anti-Black is a symptom Trump shares with many white Americans. We are living in an America that cant accept the truthand that truth is that white America today is implicated in the maintenance of white supremacy. All pervasive and deep. Yet, despite the protests and Black Lives Matter movement, some Americans keep pointing to images of looters as if the 400 years of Americas worship of violence against Black Americans will disappear. Down a memory hole.

Since I refuse to nod in agreement with these two women, I refuse to accept their reality of looters, I refuse to subjugate myself for their benefit, Ill become their targetfor elimination. Its not over the top; its the reality Black Americans face in US. Theres the outright killing of Micheal Brown, Gorge Floyd, or Tamir Rice. And theres the day-to-day feeding of Black lives to a memory hole where we expelled from employment, housing, education. Many end up in prison or in sub-standard housing. Others still are subjected to their disappearance from family and society, relegated to homelessness.

I would have to pretend that I believed in the lies. And lies, Winston Smith understood, pass into history, and become truth. Who controls the pass, ran the Party slogan, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.

No one does facts the way Big Brother does in Oceania. Asks Winston. He loves his job at the Ministry of Truth in the Records Department. He knows all about ideas and people disappearing. That is, ideas and people being vaporized. Staff at the Ministry of Truth are in love with that word. Vaporized. Adrift with Winston as he sits at his desk, working, we follow his thoughts as he recalls his parents. Vaporized. He knew others who were vaporized too.

No history, past, or present

His co-worker (over there), is a woman whose sole job is to remove the names of people, permanently. From existence.

No history, past or present

We are taken, in Winstons mind, to the print shops where experts skilled at faking photographs engage in the vaporizing operation too. And somewhere or other, quite anonymous, there were the directing brains who coordinated the whole effort and laid down the lines of policy which made it necessary that this fragment of the past should preserved, that one falsified, and the other rubbed out of existence.

Yes, Winston, too, vaporizes truth. Indirectly. But nonetheless.

His primary job isnt to reconstruct the past but, rather, to supply Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreen programs, plays, novelsin other words, he is part of the system that produces what citizens are to think, so they dont have to think. If that makes sense! It should make sense; its not that so different from our current reality in 2020.

If in 1984 the Records Department supplies all forms of entertainment and more crucially information for its citizenry, why should we be surprised to find the presence of this phenomena already in reality?

Its not as if the world hasnt experienced deadly regimes that insisted that human beings negate the idea of freedom and subjugate themselves to enslavement. It shouldnt be a surprise that ignorance is sought after as a form of bliss and the use of the intellect is suspect. And warwar is more profitable we know than peace. What is peace if not the acknowledge that Black lives matter so then all lives could finally begin to matter?

The decision as to what to watch on telescreens, then, will be left to those who know! Leave the decision to the word of Big Brother! Just watch, listen, absorb.

The task of making life easy for fellow citizens rest with the staff at the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth. As for Wilson, he doesnt lie. The department doesnt lie. The department as an essential component of the Ministry of Truth is all about the truth. Not lies.

So the Records Department which produces news, films, and novels, produces truth, does a great service to humanity by eliminating lies. Fabrications. Thats Winstons job. However, in his present position he was invisible. He could stop and become lost in a monstrous world where he himself was the monster. Could it be possible that this Party, this system, this way of being endure forever? But what good would it do him to think. He was alone where the past was dead and the future unimaginable.

So Winston does his job. He sends what are damnable lies down wastepaper tubes nicknamed the memory holes. Forever forgotten. The past is history, obliterated.

In Records, then, dozens of citizens of Oceania work on the project of fabrication, that is, truth. One persons version of what Big Brother had actually said is selected and then that selection is subjected to re-editing and whats re-edited sets in motion the complex process of cross-referencing that would be required, and then the chosen lie would pass into the permanent records and become truth.

And everything change and does, Winston muses. A fact today is a lie tomorrow in Oceania.

Winston, today, works on the narrative he calls, Comrade Ogilvy. The Comrade doesnt exist. But in a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs, thanks to that photo shop, Comrade Ogilvy will take on flesh! Winstons creation will breathe and live among humans. And Winston would have done this job for the glory and honor of Big Brother.

Speaking, then, in Big Brother speak, he announces the existence of Comrade Ogilvy, unimagined an hour ago. Comrade Ogilvy was now a fact.

Lies pass into history

Looters today, looters tomorrow, looters forever.

Memory holes proliferate, even while protesters are growing in numbers, unafraid to take to the streets, and taking upon themselves the right to effect change. The dissemination of memory holes continues, and we should expect the fearful and hateful will fight to the death to maintain all glory and honor to Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. We should expect similar slits existing in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the building. In other words, an operation we see being played out in the removal of judges and legal departments who, in turn, are replaced by no-thinking machine men and women. Yes, men and women. Winston, without conscious. Doing the job of eliminating truth.

Because, at the end of the day, the truth is being looted.

Many of Americans dont see Oceania in America. They have been told to worry about what those protesters want to take away from them! They who worked so hard for generations! We are being robbed by those looters. Sowing division makes it so much easier for the sons and daughters still hard t work to vaporize the inconvenient reality of white violence.

Those with nothing will take everything from me!

Fox News is the altar on which the high priest, Trump, disseminates to sons and daughters the greatness of memory holes. Memory holes, then, is the god that is feed daily human beings to the point of sheer absurdity.

Vaporize, vaporize, vaporize.

We who protests are hearing the echo of generations of sheep behaving, as Winston notes in 1984, with paralyzing stupidity and imbecile enthusiasm.

I, a little like Winston, sat giving the time of day to people for whom America is white and always has been white. When I should have gathered by laptop and backpack and left the sunroom because embracing this brand of ignorance isnt an option. Truth is at stake like the climate is changing and global warming is melting to glaciers. The oceans are rising. The temperatures are rising.

The photo shops do a good job!

And so do the Winstons who see the memory hole coming for them but just keep on stepping on the neck of truth.

But, in the end, embracing the real looters, isnt an option. The real looters are losing their foothold on reality.
