ChildFund and Oceania Rugby announce new partnership to keep children safe in sport – sportanddev.org

The wellbeing of young people participating in sport has become an increasingly prominent concern among major sporting bodies, including the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which has recognised the risks of exploitation and abuse for children.

Through membership with World Rugby, Oceania Rugby is committed to ensuring rugby is a safe sport for all children taking part across the region.

The 'Child Safeguarding in Sport Project' was launched in December 2019, with ChildFund providing technical expertise, tools, training and support to Oceania Rugby to build child safeguarding systems in-line with international best practice.

In 2020, the project will see Oceania Rugby undertake a review of best practice and implementation of a regional framework. In addition to this, two member unions, Nauru Rugby Union and Samoa Rugby Union, will launch workshops on child safeguarding this month.

The increased focus on child safeguarding among sporting bodies has led to the emergence of important new initiatives and policies. This includes the IOC Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance, which makes it compulsory for organisations that belong to the Olympic movement to adopt these principles, implement relevant measures and monitor compliance.

The 'Child Safeguarding in Sport Project' builds on learning and resources developed through ChildFund Australias rugby for development program ChildFund Pass It Back.

ChildFund is considered a pioneer organisation in the development of the International Safeguards for Children in Sport and 2017 was awarded the UNICEF Safeguarding Children in Sport Award at the Beyond Sport Global Awards in recognition of its work supporting partner sporting bodies.

The over-riding objective of the project is to ensure that children engaging in rugby across the region will benefit from a safer environment both physically and emotionally.

Oceania Rugby general manager Bruce Cook said: Rugby is committed to ensuring player welfare, in all forms and at all levels of the game.

As the regional governing body of World Rugby, Oceania Rugby is committed to ensuring our game creates dynamic practices and environments where all boys and girls, men and women in our sport can thrive.

The most fundamental element to a positive sport experience is being safe physically, emotionally and socially, said Cook.

He added: Oceania Rugby is pleased to partner with ChildFund Australia. Weve worked with ChildFund Australia before and know our organisations share a commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes that are meaningful for our members and their communities.

ChildFund Pass It Back director Chris Mastaglio said: We are very proud to be partnering with Oceania Rugby on this important initiative for children.

Sport should always be a safe place for children to play, learn and grow, and Oceania Rugbys commitment to ensuring their sport is safe at all levels is to be commended.

Working in partnership with Oceania Rugby and its member unions, National Governing Bodies, the project will involve:

GM sounds the retreat over Oceania and Thailand – just-auto.com

Holden had been reduced to a shadow of its former self, importing cars from Europe, North America and Asia and adapting global models for regional requirements

On Sunday, GM confirmed it planned to "wind down" sales, engineering and design operations in Australia and the sales anddistribution operation in New Zealandwhich, combined, employ 830 people, and "retire"the long serving Holden brand by 2021.

The company also said it had agreed to sell its Rayong plant in Thailand, which employs 1,500 people, to China's Great Wall Motors and withdraw the Chevrolet brand from that market by the end of 2020.

This is a continuation of the US automaker's policy over the last 10 years to exit markets that do not generate what it regards as adequate returns on investment.

The company sold its European Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to France's PSA group in 2017 and has also exited virtually all markets in Africa over the last several years.

In Asia, GM closed its plant in Indonesia in 2014 and agreed in January 2020 to sell its second plant in India, also to Great Wall Motors, having sold the other Indian plant to SAIC Motor in 2017.

The company said it planned to focus on "growth opportunities in specialty vehicle business"", no doubt referring to the huge industry wide shift that is expected to take place in the current decade towards electric vehicles (EVs) as well as growth relating to autonomous driving technologies (AV).

GM chairman and CEO Mary Barra confirmed the company is "restructuring its international operations, focusing on markets where we have the right strategies to drive robust returns, and prioritising global investments that will drive growth in the future of mobility, especially in the areas of EVs and AVs".

She added "while these (restructuring) actions support our global strategy, we understand that they impact people who have contributed so much to our company. We will support our people, our customers and our partners, to ensure an orderly and respectful transition in the impacted markets".

GM president Mark Reuss said the company had "explored a range of options to continue the Holden operationsbut none could overcome the challenges of the investments needed for the highly fragmented [global]right hand drive market, the economics to support growing the brand, and delivering an appropriate return on investment".

The company said it also carried out a "detailed analysis of the business case for future production at the Rayong manufacturing facility in Thailand. Low plant utilisation and forecast volumeshave made continued GM production at the site unsustainable. And without domestic manufacturing, Chevrolet would be unable to compete in Thailand's new vehicle market".

The company said it expected to take a US$1.1bn cash and non-cash charge this year relating to its restructuring in the three countries.

GM senior vice president and president GM International, Steve Kiefer, said GM International "is well positioned in its core markets: South America, the Middle East and South Korea. The company continues to optimise partnerships in markets like Uzbekistan, by transferring assets and building strong supply chains to reduce costs in growth markets".

Holden started full local car manufacture in Australia in 1948 and once had final assembly plants in almost every state. By the 1980s, as various government import duty and taxation measures to 'protect' local automakers from imported competition began to be reduced, it was consolidated into one large new factory at Elizabeth, a suburb of Adelaide, in South Australia, where local manufacturing ended in 2017. Many dealers subsequently lost, or quit the franchise and the company announced late in 2019 it was dumping the Commodore nameplate, dating back to 1979, and the Astra, both Opel-developed cars sourced from PSA in Europe.

Local assembly in New Zealand ended in 1990 after increasingly frictionless free trade with Australia and lowering import duty rates made the Trentham plant, built in 1967, uneconomic. GM also ended local parts production.

Australia's ABC News quoted prime minister Scott Morrison as saying he was "disappointed but not surprised" at the GM announcement.

"But I am angry, like I think many Australians would be. Australian taxpayers put millions into this multinational company. They let the brand just wither away on their watch. Now they are leaving it behind," he said.

Federal industry minister Karen Andrews said it was unacceptable for GM to have made the decision without any consultation with the government.

Holden had been whittled down to about 800 local workers with 600 focusing on design and development work for local and regional markets.

GM officials told ABC about 600 would leave by Junewhile 200 would remain in ongoing roles connected with the company's pledge to offer at least 10 more years of customer service to owners of the 1.6m Holdens in use.

Work at the Port Melbourne site would be wound down by the end of June and the [former proving ground] Lang Lang calibration facility would finish up in August.

Acting ANOC President Mitchell to feature at second AIBA Continental Forum – Insidethegames.biz

Acting Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) President Robin Mitchell is set to speak at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Continental Forum for Oceania, taking place here tomorrow.

It is the second AIBA Continental Forum to take place, with the inaugural meeting held in Panama last month.

The Forums were devised by AIBA Marketing Commission chair Umar Kremlev to create fruitful dialogue between AIBA, Confederations and National Federations after a crisis-riddled year for the organisation.

AIBA was stripped of its Olympic status last June over a number of issues, including governance, finances and refereeing and judging.

The organisation's future remains precarious due to a large amount of debt and uncertain leadership, with Mohamed Moustahsane currently acting as Interim President after the resignation of Uzbekistan's Gafur Rakhimov.

Mitchell, a Fijian and also the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC) President, will be one of the speakers at tomorrow's event.

He is expected to give a presentation on ONOC's education programme.

Fiji's Secretary of Youth and Sports Jone Nemani Maretino, Oceania Boxing Confederation (OCBC) President Ted Tanner and Boxing Fiji President Manasa Baravilala are also set to be in attendance and will give opening remarks.

Moustahsane is set to give a Reform Commission progress report, while Kremlev is scheduled to give a Marketing Commission update.

A presentation will be given on the future of AIBA and OCBC, alongside plans for an Oceania development programme.

Throughout the day, National Federations will be given time to discuss issues with the AIBA leadership and raise proposals of their own.

The European Forum is scheduled to take place in the Italian city of Assisi on February 29, with details for the events in Asia and Africa yet to be announced.

Pindai Caves, Once Home to the Lapita People and Extinct Species – Ancient Origins

New Caledonia, in the South Pacific , is a special collectivity of France. Not only does it have a fascinating history and unique culture, the islands also have one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Oceania, the Pindai Caves. These caves have provided archaeologists with a treasure trove of human remains, and palaeontologists with remains of extinct birds, reptiles and other fauna that dates to the Holocene Period.

The Lapita people were the first people to settle on the islands of New Caledonia. As these sailors of Austronesian extraction were extremely skilled navigators, New Caledonia played a very important role in their colonization of Oceania. They are regarded as the ancestors of the Polynesians who went on to populate many Pacific Islands and New Zealand. They are also the ancestors of the modern Kanak people of New Caledonia.

Archaeologists have found items that once belonged to the Lapita people, including many pot shards, within the Pindai Caves. They also left several heaps of shellfish scraps. Guano (bird excrement) was harvested in the caverns and used as a fertilizer.

New Caledonia was absorbed into the French Empire in the 19 th century when they used the islands as a penal colony. While the caves were explored in the 19 th century, archaeologists only investigated in the 20 th century and found two settlements in the Pindai Caves that were occupied by humans over a period of at least two millennia.

Along with the prehistoric settlements, a great many animal and bird remains have been discovered. Of the 45 species found, at least 20 are now extinct in New Caledonia or globally. Among the extinct species are rails, a kagu, pigeons, and a large snipe. Other long-extinct species of birds found includes the Sylviornis, a flightless megapode who laid its eggs on the ground in mounds, and a flightless swamp hen. The remains of a number of owls were also found. These too have been extinct for many years. A great number of these remains were found in potholes and sinkholes in the caves, which trapped the birds.

Sylviornis, the extinct flightless bird ( Renata Cunha )

A number of extinct reptiles were also found, including a land-dwelling crocodile ( Mekosuchus) as well as fossils of the giant horned turtle, Meiolania. The fossils and remains in the cave are providing researchers with insights into the extinction of species after the arrival of the first humans.

The results of various studies have not shown a definite link between human activity and the extinction of species such as the flightless birds on New Caledonia. The remains have been carbon dated and indicate that humans and the extinct species co-existed for many years. Over time, humans had an adverse impact on the environment and this, rather than overhunting, led to the demise of many species.

The caves are on a peninsula on the north coast of the main island, Grande Terre. The location has six caves of the karst type, two of which are accessible. The remaining four caves have been categorized as sinkholes - chasm created by the flow of subterranean water.

The location of New Caledonia (Google Maps)

The two accessible caves were once the homes of the first people who settled on the islands. The entrances of the cave broaden out into a large chamber and contain stalactites and stalagmites. Many species of birds lived in the caves, such as the extinct prehistoric birds whose fossils have been found by palaeontologists.

The caves are 130 miles (182 km) north of Noumea, the capital city of New Caledonia. There are guided tours of the region and they include excursions to the caves. The caves are protected by the local government and visitors are asked to respect the site.

Chinese team to be in quarantine before Olympics qualifiers – The Tribune India

Vinayak Padmadeo

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 20

The United World Wrestling (UWW) has decided to put the Chinese contingent that will participate in the upcoming Asia/Oceania Olympics qualifying tournament in quarantine in Serbia before the tournament to ensure none of the other participating nations get affected by the coronavirus.

The same protocol will be followed for the Chinese team before its participation at the world Olympics qualification tournament to be held from April 30 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

President Nenad Lalovic has decided that UWW will quarantine the Chinese team in Serbia before it heads to the qualifiers, UWW-Asia president Daulet Turlykhanov told The

Tribune through a translator. After the competition, they will again go to Europe, where they will train for the world Olympics qualifiers. I have not heard any such decision taken by any other international federation, he added.

The virus breakout forced the sports governing body to shift the Asia/Oceania qualifying tournament out of Xian, China. As a preventive measure, the Indian Government did not issue visas to the 40-member Chinese team for the Asian Wrestling Championships. In fact, even before heading to New Delhi for the Asian meet, the teams from a few countries had privately inquired about the Chinese teams participation from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials.

Despite UWWs initiative, Turlykhanov is still concerned about the virus and its impact leading up to the Tokyo Games that start on July 24. We are really worried about this situation with the coronavirus in China. No one knows what will happen in the next six months. We will wait and watch, he said.

Getting hosts is difficult

Turlykhanov also raised concerns about getting new cities to host the Asian meets amidst the economic slowdown the world over. Yes there are some difficulties. But (bidding) also depends on the power of the federations and their resources, Turlykhanov said. For example, countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia want to stage the Asian Championships. But the UWW regulation is that each championship should have three styles, Greco-Roman, freestyle and female wrestling; and Iran and Saudi Arabia dont have female wrestling. We want to extend the geography of the Asian Championships but it takes a lot of energy and money to hold it, he added.

Kyrgyzstan to host Asia Olympics qualifiers

New Delhi: Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan will play host to the Asia/Oceania Olympics qualifying tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in Xian, China, from March 27 but had to be moved out due to the outbreak of coronavirus. I spoke to the UWW president and most likely it will be held in Kyrgyzstan. A final decision about this will come out either by tomorrow or a day after, UWW-Asia president Daulet Turlykhanov said. Both the Wrestling Federation of India and Turlykhanovs Kazakhstan Wrestling Federation were interested to play host for the Asia event. Vinayak Padmadeo

The Indian Fed Cup team will travel to Dubai for this years competition as the ITF has named the desert city as the new venue for the matches, to be held from March 3 to 7.

The ITF named the new venue after moving out the matches from then Chinese city of Dongguan due to Coronoavirus threat. TheAsia/Oceania Group Imatches were originally scheduled to be played from February 4-8.

The event will be held in the week following the ATP Dubai tournament at the same venue, and will see six nations China P.R., Chinese Taipei, India, Indonesia, Korea Rep. and Uzbekistan compete for a place in the Fed Cup Play-offs in April, an ITF release said.

The six teams will vie for two spots in Fed Cup Play-offs.

Being in Dubai makes no difference. But the dates give enough time to Sania for her recovery. Doubles is an important point. Ankita is playing well. The other team members will also get some tournament to play under their belt, Indias Fed Cup captain Vishal Uppal told PTI.

Sanias participation was under doubt due to a calf injury she aggravated during the Australian Open, where she pulled out of the mixed doubles before retiring mid-way into her womens doubles opening round match.

I think we have a good chance but we will have to be at our best and fight hard for every point, every game, every set, every match, Uppal added.

Global Automotive Fuel Cell Market is Estimated to be 13.6 Thousand Units in 2020 & Projected to Reach 932.6 Thousand Units by 2028 -…

Europe is projected to have the highest growth rate in the automotive fuel cell market

The EU2020 focuses on increasing the demand for fuel cells by improving the infrastructure and decreasing the cost of fuel cells. Even though European companies lag behind their Asian counterparts in fuel cell technology development and patents, Europe is slowly shifting its focus on renewable sources of energy. Germany represents around 75% of all European demonstration activities due to the presence of a number of small and large companies such as Siemens Westinghouse, Proton Power Systems PLC, Heliocentris, and SFC Energy. As governments are shifting their fleet of buses from ICE vehicles to zero-emission vehicles, it would create massive opportunities for growth of the fuel cell bus segment in the region. Besides buses, countries like Norway and Switzerland will be key markets for fuel cell trucks.

The Young Guns – The Bay’s News First – SunLive

Posted: 8:00am Saturday 08 Feb, 2020

Xavier Daw and Riley James. Image Daniel Hines/SunLive.

Riley James has just turned 11, Xavier Daw is 15.

Theyre not widely recognized in the broad spectrum of youth sport. But James of Paraparumu and Daw of Queensland are being paraded proudly at the Tauranga Citizens Club this week as the future faces of their chosen craft. That of cue sports particularly snooker. They are the cueists the young guns.

And when the rest of Tauranga was seeking respite from 30 degrees Celsius of heatwave in the surf or swimming pool, James and Daw were at the table for the Oceania under 19 snooker tournament.

They were oblivious to global warming only interested in the heat that each other would bring to the table in this transtasman rivalry. Daw and James have similar stories to tell.

I got interested in snooker when Dad took me to the local RSA, says Riley.

I learned to play on an eight ball table at my Dads pub, says Xavier.

A commitment and lots of practice have lifted their game to an international level and perhaps to a professional career.

As young rugby players live in awe of Beauden Barrett and Sam Cane these guys model themselves on pros like the smooth and silky Aussie, Neil Robertson whos probably won in excess of $5 million as a professional, or Ronnie OSullivan and Judd Trump. James and Daw would prefer to play at Sheffields Crucible than Eden Park.

No, they dont want to be out in the sun, says Frank Dewens, president of the Australian Billiards and Snooker Council. They may be young but they know what they want to do and thats the big big thing.

And this year both James and Daw will be off to England, the spiritual home of snooker, to finesse their skills, to take them one further step towards professionalism maybe.

Snookers a lot more popular in England because of the climate its colder so people seek indoor sports.

Think of darts.

Whereas here in NZ young people are skateboarding or playing tennis and its harder to capture their imagination, says Frank.

And there is another issue the degree of difficulty.

Its enormous with our game. So you have to commit a lot of time and effort over the table.

And there arent too many in Oceania keen to do that.

Were happy with the state of the game in New Zealand, says Dan OSullivan, president of the New Zealand Billiards and Snooker Federation.

But he admits they couldnt always accommodate more players. There are probably about I000 registered players in the country, another 2000 in Australian. But that doesnt take into account the enormous popularity of cue sports as a casual sport.

There are ten players from either side of the Tasman competing in the Oceania Under 21 Championship at the Citz Club this week. And 16 of Oceania s finest women players are also competing. They are making inroads, there will also be a mixed-doubles contest.

In a couple of weeks in Australia there will be the open championship. Its snookers honey pot down under. The winner of that gets to play professionally for two years on the world circuit.

Neither Riley nor Xavier are expected to cut it this time round. But they are both sufficiently driven to have half an eye towards the outcome of that event. One day it could be their pass to a professional career.

Snooker in Australia and New Zealand is holding its breath.

Ryoma on Australia vs. NA LoL: "It’s a lot better here than Australia" – LoL – News – WIN.gg

Olivia R. February 9, 2020

100 Thieves were feeling quite confident after their win against Team Liquid yesterday. Unfortunately, that confidence didn't translate into a victory over Immortals. The loss leaves them with an even 3-3 record.

WIN.gg sat down with Tommy "Ryoma" Lee to talk about what they need to improve on, how they think next weekend will go, and kangaroos.

You guys beat TL yesterday. Were you expecting better results today?

Ryoma: Not really. We were going in with the same mindset of just doing our best. Just playing the game how its supposed to be played.

Yesterday, it seemed like you guys were going for a more aggressive playstyle. Why do you think that didnt work today against Immortals?

They just came in better prepared than Liquid did. What they did was pretty smart. They played better in-game.

What do you think the team needs to improve on to get to the top?

We just need to work on what we failed on today. That will be our focus heading into next weeks match. Focusing on the stuff we didnt do today, like early game. We had a really good early game against TL, but it was a different story today.

How are the teams in the LCS different from the teams in the Oceania region?

Its a lot different. Any team can play a lot of champs. In Oceania you can kind of tell how theyre going to pick. Everyone has smaller champion pools there so its easier to read what theyre going to do. Its harder in America. You cant plan out how its going to go as well.

How do you prepare for that?

Its kind of similar. Most people will still go with their comfort, though, or better picks. You can go off of that. But sometimes it can just change.

How long have you been in America?

Two months now.

How does Los Angeles compare to Australia?

Its a lot better than Australia, League of Legends-wise. I like Australia a lot. But for League of Legends, its a lot better here. Its treated more seriously.

LA itself has been pretty good. The weather has been quite different, but right now in Australia its not the best weather either.

How have you been liking the food?

I feel like I ate a lot already. In LA, they give really big portions. I dont finish my food. The burgers in Australia are not as big, the pizzas are smaller, too.

Ive heard that kangaroos are considered pests in Australia. Did you ever run into any trouble with them yourself?

In Sydney, I dont see much. Its mainly cities and suburbs. But I went to Brisbon one time and I saw them on the road. That was my first time seeing them on the road, jumping around.

Do you think you could take one on?

No, theres no way. I think they're supposed to be really strong.

What about in League?

Probably still no.

Who is the most talkative in-game?

I think Meteos. He normally communicates what he wants pretty well.

What about outside the game?

Same, Meteos as well. Hes pretty much our captain and leader. But when were talking outside of the game, I dont know who the leader would be.

Who is the most toxic?

Nobody. Everyone is pretty friendly. The environment has been pretty good. Everythings been pretty chill.

Who eats the most? I'm assuming it's not you.

Not me. Stunt does, if I recall.

Who has the worst taste in food?

Were not too picky. Everyone eats pretty standard stuff. Ssumday only eats Korean food sometimes.

What's your favorite food?

Steak and pho.

Who is the best singer?

Maybe our coach, Joe. Hes pretty good. Hes the only one I can remember singing something.

Can you sing?

No.

Who takes the longest to get ready?

I think its me. I am normally pretty late. I have to work on that one. Im just not good with time. Im always late when were leaving the apartment.

Who watches the most anime?

I think Stunt. I watch a bit here and there, but I havent been watching much lately. I only watch Haikyu!!, but that was before I got to LA. I even watched it on the plane ride.

How is the team going to celebrate Valentines Day?

I dont know. Im not sure what everyones relationships are but I know Cody Sun has a girlfriend.

If you could have any pet at the team's office, what would you prefer?

I would like a dog actually.

What kind?

A Pomernaion. I used to have one at home. He was pretty well behaved. He was always really dopey and slept a lot. He peed and pooed in the right places. He never barked that much, either. Except when we came back home, hed get excited.

How do you think your match againstDignitas will go next weekend?

I think Dignitas is a pretty good team from what Ive seen so far. They have weaknesses, you can see them. It depends on how much we will improve. We have to work on our issues and I think we can beat them.

Paddling prodigy eyes up Oceania idols – The Bay’s News First – SunLive

Posted: 1:00pm Thursday 30 Jan, 2020 | By Jamie Troughton jamie@dscribe.co.nz

New Zealand's Luuka Jones. Photos: Jamie Troughton/Dscribe Media

Evy Leibfarth turned up Down Under this time last year with stars in her eyes and the fresh-faced enthusiasm only a 15-year-old can bring.

The American teen shyly introduced herself to kayaking stars Jess Fox and Luuka Jones and proudly proclaimed them her idols as she watched their classy performances, on and off the water.

A year later, as she lines up at this weekend's Oceania canoe slalom championships in Auckland, the paddling prodigy will be eyeing Australia's Fox and New Zealand's Jones as near-equals after an astonishing break-out 2019 season.

She became the youngest person to win a world cup medal, picking up C1 bronze in Solvenia, and made a series of finals in both K1 and C1 across the world cup rounds and the world championships.

"My paddling took a huge jump - just being in the presence of so many top athletes and being able to watch and learn from them really helped my paddling," Leibfarth says at the Vector Wero Whitewater Park in Auckland this week.

"I was just really excited the whole year to keep training and pushing and I'm really excited for this upcoming year, starting with the Oceania championships."

She celebrated her 16th birthday on her first trip to New Zealand this week, although the Bryson City, North Carolina native met Jones and Fox at the Australian championships last year.

"Both of them have such a unique style and each does certain moves better than others and I just love to watch them and see how smooth they are in the water. Off the water, they just have such a great attitude towards the sport and they get a lot of younger kids into it and I really admire that about them."

Evy Leibfarth (United States) training at the Vector Wero Whitewater Centre in Auckland.

The Oceania championships double as the first Olympic qualifier for many Australian, New Zealand and Pacific Island paddlers, with the second in Australia next month. Leibfarth has her own Olympic trials in Oklahoma in April - where she's heavily favoured to book spots in both C1 and K1 - while Fox and Jones have already pre-qualified with their world championship performances and just need their selections confirmed.

Fox, who became the most successful paddler in world championship history last year, was herself a precocious teen, winning Olympic silver in the K1 in London in 2012. She predicts a big future for Leibfarth too.

"She was catapulted onto the world tour last year with some amazing performances by a 15-year-old so she's definitely one to watch," Fox says.

"She's a bubbly, exciting paddler to watch and she can put down some fast paddling. She's just really tidy and clean and gets through the gates well, she's got a lot of potential and progress to make, being so young."

This will be the fourth time Fox has competed at Vector Wero and she's also looking forward to reigniting her long rivalry with Jones, with the pair sharing podiums in some big events in recent years.

"It's great to have such awesome competition close to home - I've known Luuka for years now and she's one of the strongest paddlers in the world and on her home course, she'll be hard to beat. I think back on Rio and how special it was to share the podium with her and to have New Zealand and Australia side by side, like a sisterhood in a way. It was nice to have the Southern Hemisphere represented when it's such a European-centred sport and the growth of the sport in the Southern Hemisphere is fantastic."

For Jones, having some of the world's best paddlers come to her home course is immensely gratifying.

"It's a huge weekend having the Oceania champs in New Zealand and it's really special having so many internationals over to compete with," Jones says.

"It's such an awesome whitewater course and I feel quite proud to show them where we train. Jess is an amazing paddler - the most successful in our sport - and just to have her here to measure myself against is pretty exciting."

While selection rivalry will be particularly intense in the men's K1 - where both New Zealand and Australia have qualified boat spots for Tokyo - the men's C1 is wide open with a continental qualification still up for grabs between paddlers from Australia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

Entry is free for spectators across all three days, with the championships starting at 9am on Saturday.

Kobelco switches to TRT in Oceania – Cranes Today

Kobelco has chosen TRT, Tidd Ross Todd, as its distributor in Australia and New Zealand. The announcement comes after longstanding distributor ACM (Australian Crane & Machinery) said it was relinquishing the deal.

TRT and their Queensland-based subsidiary, TRT (Aust) Pty Ltd, will provide Kobelco crane customers in the Oceania region with technical information, parts supply, and sales of new Kobelco cranes.

Kobelco said: This new partnership reflects both organisations commitment to outstanding customer service and support throughout the region. We are excited to combine TRTs great customer support and expertise with Kobelco cranes, which are valued in the industry for their high performance, having earned a reputation as the most reliable brand of crawler cranes on the market.

TRT, a New Zealand based company operating across Oceania and established in 1967, have built up many decades of expertise in the crane industry. TRT is highly respected and well experienced with crawler cranes, including Kobelco, the Japanese manufacturer says. This new partnership will reshape the way customers are supported moving forward.

In a December 2019 email announcing the end of ACMs deal, MD Ben Potter said the company would be continuing to supply the local crane industry, through a new partnership with Zoomlion.
