BALANCED DIET! That is what the nutrition month means, aside from the eating habit of less fat, less calories, more protein etc. Nutrition is one of the key components of being healthy, fit and strong, and what brings us together closer to knowing the right nutrition is food servings and the dining table.

July is the National Nutrition Month, and there are things to be considered and pondered upon when it comes to NUTRITION. Unless the individual thinks otherwise, nutrition will be just having our daily bread and eating three times a day, its just like saying that nutrition can be available when you can buy it then you can have it.

Get updates on President Benigno Aquino III's address to nation.

On the other hand, like a mother who prepares food following the food pyramid to maintain health through nutrition, in sports, nutrition is the best supplement an athlete can get to maintain the essential vitamins, and nutrients the body need to cope up with the daily training and exercise to be in shape.

Nothing is forbidden about eating, food is a primordial need for reasons of health and sustenance, but to be sure you get the most from your food choices, it is best to have a target intake, know your food combinations and especially your diet. To a layman, diet may simply mean the shredding of fat or calories to lose weight or eating a kings breakfast to gain weight, or simply eating and drinking for his daily fare.

On the other hand, the athletes diet is more serious, about not just losing or gaining weight; He makes sure that his diet is met in a regulated manner because to the athlete it is at least 50% of the battle during their off-season cycle and as competition approaches, diet becomes increasingly important until it is up to 80% of the battle. Dieting plus the intensive exercise and training the athlete does give the athlete the edge of being successful in his desire to develop a championship physique.

Athletes can train like Trojans with a perfect mental attitude, but everything will go for nothing if nutrition and diet is faulty. Exercise is not all that helps in the achievement of health, it happens in the kitchen too, but only if yours is stocked with the right foods and supplements necessary to build strength, stamina, and muscle tissue, and that which have the vitally important vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, to achieve the overall psychology and philosophy of what nutrition and diet is.

OMAHA, Neb., July 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Complete Nutrition, the nation's fastest-growing nutritional supplement retailer, has introduced 3Plenish, its first-ever supplement formulated specifically for endurance athletes. Designed to be taken throughout a workout, the product hydrates athletes more effectively than sports drinks or water and provides essential nutrients demanded for peak performance and recovery.

Research indicates endurance athletes require fuel and hydration to perform at their highest levels during prolonged workouts, and nutrients afterward to fully recover. 3Plenish, developed by a team of scientists and nutritionists, satisfies both the intra- and post-workout needs of these athletes through the exclusive Triple-Core Endurance Blend. This non-stimulant formula packs in each serving the optimal levels of electrolytes for hydration through muscle volumization and high-energy carbohydrates to amplify muscles for sustained strength and longevity. The included essential amino acids help muscles recover during and immediately after workouts.

"When formulating 3Plenish we examined the hydration and nutrient needs of runners, cyclists, CrossFit enthusiasts and triathletes," said Dr. Nicholas Rupcich, Chief Formulator of Product Development for Complete Nutrition. "The clinically effective dose of electrolytes, carbs and amino acids makes 3Plenish a go-to drink mix for all athletes who want to push their athletic limits."

Each package of 3Plenish contains 25 servings of instant-mix powder, available in Lemon Lime and Fruit Punch flavors. To use, individuals mix one scoop of powder with 20 oz. of water and consume throughout the duration of their workouts. 3Plenish is free of stimulants, gluten, aspartame, allergens and other restricted ingredients.

Additional benefits of 3Plenish include a reduction in training-induced cortisol to help preserve muscle and an increase in Type I and Type II muscle fiber size for enhanced power and speed. 3Plenish has also been proven to enable athletes to increase resistance exercise by 100 percent for more strength, tone, mass and endurance.

Fresh help for firms struggling with nutrition profiling

Lrbeva Nutrition has launched an online nutritional profiling tool for the food industry that also highlights any nutrition claims that assessed products can make.

The company, which brings together a consulting firm and a development laboratory focused on nutrition and health, has developed NutrimetTIC to provide nutritional analysis with a few clicks of a mouse.

Its the first online application system dedicated to the nutritional qualities of foods, Celine Le Stunff, nutrition and regulatory affairs consultant at Lrbeva Nutrition, told FoodNavigator.

The main need is to get low-cost nutritional values over wide ranges of food products. This would be very expensive if companies had to analyze each recipe in a laboratory. EU Regulation 1169/2011 introduced mandatory nutrition labeling and all companies will have to know the nutritional values of their products. Many of them are starting from scratch!

Major names

The system is based on the Sain-Lim method of nutritional analysis, which is approved by the European Food Safety Authority. Lrbeva Nutrition claims major names in food manufacturing, retail and catering have adopted the tool.

Interested companies simply sign up to use it online and can access their own dedicated database where they can enter new information and get codes for different users. Alongside nutrient profiling and information on potential nutrition claims products can make, the service can also highlight preformatted nutritional labelling.

It can interest any company that has lots of recipes and wants to know their nutritional value, with the aim of nutrition labelling and/or improving their nutritional qualities, said Le Stunff. She said the service would also work as a great way for businesses to work collaboratively and share information.

Four criteria

The tool uses four criteria for consumption frequency: 1/daily; 2/frequent; 3/occasionally and 4/exceptionally. NutrimetTIC not only examines the criteria qualifying and disqualifying the product, but also suggests areas of work to place it in a better category. Lrbeva Nutrition said it could also provide support and guidance to interested parties on how to improve their nutritional profile.

DSM completes acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada and expands its Nutritional Lipids growth platform

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, announced today that it has successfully completed the acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada, the leading global provider of fish-oil derived nutritional products to the dietary supplement and food and beverage markets. The acquisition, announced on 18 May 2012, strengthens and complements DSM`s newly established, global Nutritional Lipids growth platform. The acquisition, for a total enterprise value of CAD 540 million, is expected to be EPS accretive from 2013 onwards.

Feike Sijbesma, CEO and Chairman of the DSM Managing Board, said: "With the completion of this transaction we have now completed 1.7 billion worth of growth enhancing acquisitions since we embarked on our current strategic plan less than two years ago, including nearly 1.3 billion in the Nutrition cluster, as we continue to further improve our attractive portfolio in health, nutrition and materials to deliver shareholder value with stronger, more stable growth and profitability. After our successful acquisition of Martek in 2011, the acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada is the logical next step in developing our Nutritional Lipids into a major growth platform for our Nutrition cluster."

Leendert Staal, President and CEO of DSM Nutritional Products, commented: "Having completed the acquisition in a timeframe of only two months, we are very pleased to welcome all employees of Ocean Nutrition Canada to DSM today and I look forward to developing this exciting opportunity together. Our attention is now fully focused on ensuring a smooth integration of the business in a timely and efficient manner. Business continuity and customer satisfaction will remain key priorities for us as we focus on future synergy generation between both businesses."

Strategic rationale With the acquisition of Ocean Nutrition Canada, DSM strengthens and complements its Nutritional Lipids growth platform, which was established after the acquisition of Martek in 2011. DSM can now uniquely offer a full range of products in the rapidly growing nutritional lipids category, offering both fish oil derived omega-3 fatty acids and microbially derived nutritional lipids.

The nutritional lipids category is at an early stage yet well established and is based on strong science, offering significant growth opportunities across a broad range of market segments and applications. Healthy nutritional lipids have been shown in a growing body of scientific evidence to provide significant health benefits and support brain, eye, and cardiovascular health throughout life, yet many consumers do not include enough in their daily diets because dietary sources are limited. In particular, leading experts have noted the important health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, a specific class of nutritional lipids.

DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), is an omega-3 fatty acid abundant in the brain and retina and important to supporting brain health throughout life. EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is also an omega-3 fatty acid important for human health. Together, EPA and DHA have been identified as important to supporting cardiovascular health throughout life.

Ocean Nutrition Canada is the leading provider of fish-derived DHA and EPA omega-3 with its MEG-3 product line. DSM is the leading provider of microbial DHA from algae with its life`sDHA(TM) product line. Also part of the DSM portfolio is life`sARA(TM), a microbially derived nutritional lipid called ARA (arachidonic acid). ARA is an omega-6 fatty acid and the principal omega-6 in the brain. Like DHA, ARA is important for proper brain development in infants.

Given the very different value proposition and pricing of fish oil derived omega-3s compared to microbial derived nutritional lipids, these products do not compete. In fact, Ocean Nutrition Canada`s fish derived omega-3 products are highly complementary to DSM`s existing microbially derived nutritional lipid products as they address different customer needs and reach different market segments.

The acquisition allows DSM to strengthen and complement its newly established, global Nutritional Lipids growth platform. It strengthens DSM`s position in the North American dietary supplement market by adding fish-oil derived omega-3 fatty acids to its portfolio and it allows DSM to further leverage its global infrastructure to expand Ocean Nutrition Canada`s sales in dietary supplement markets outside North America and in the food and beverage markets worldwide. In addition, by leveraging forms, encapsulation and emulsification technologies, the range of applications and products can be expanded.

DSM expects the transaction to be EPS accretive from 2013 onwards. The acquisition is expected to accelerate revenue growth through material revenue synergies with expanded distribution, marketing and product development. Customary operational efficiencies will also be realized in the integration process.

Boehner says no decision on bringing farm and nutrition bill to the House floor

WASHINGTON House Speaker John Boehner said Thursday that no decision has been made on House consideration of a five-year, $500-billion farm and nutrition bill that has cleared the Senate and was approved earlier in the day by the House Agriculture Committee with some changes.

The bipartisan 35-11 vote by the committee shortly after midnight Thursday added to pressure on House Republican leaders to take a position on the far-reaching bill that will redesign safety nets for food producers, set conservation and energy policies and fund the food stamp program now helping feed 46 million Americans.

But GOP leaders have shown little enthusiasm for diverting from their election-year agenda for a bill that could take days to complete and could be difficult to pass. GOP conservatives don't like the high cost of the bill and the federal subsidies going to farmers while Democrats are unhappy with proposed cuts to the food stamp program.

Agriculture Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., feels the committee did "an awful lot of good work," Boehner said at a weekly news conference. But "no decisions about it coming to the floor at this point," Boehner said.

The House will be in session for three more weeks before it leaves for its five-week summer break. After that there are only eight more legislative days in September. The current farm bill expires at the end of September.

"The House leadership needs to bring the farm bill to the floor for a vote," said Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., top Democrat on the Agriculture Committee. "Our nation's farmers and ranchers need the certainty of a new five-year farm bill and they need it before the current farm bill ends."

With droughts and weather disasters now hitting farmers, said Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debby Stabenow, D-Mich., "failure to pass a farm bill or passing a short-term extension would add even more uncertainty and stress onto American farm families and small businesses."

Both the bill that passed the Senate last month and the House measure would end direct payments to farmers, even when they don't plant crops. Both put more emphasis on crop insurance, with the Senate creating a new taxpayer-financed revenue protection program that protects farmers from moderate losses before crop insurance kicks in. The House gives farmers a choice between the revenue support program and a pricing program, preferred by Southern rice and peanut farmers, that pays producers when prices dip below a certain level.

Both the House and Senate bills would reduce spending by about $1.9 billion a year over current levels through the changes in the commodity protection programs and consolidation of conservation programs. The House bill would save another $1.6 billion a year by targeting waste and abuse in the food stamp program, compared to $400 million in the Senate legislation. Food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, make up 80 percent of the farm bill's spending, nearly $80 billion a year.

"There are some good reforms in this bill. There are other parts of the farm bill that I have concerns with," Boehner said. He referred to what he said was "a Soviet-style dairy program in America today and one of the proposals in this farm bill would actually make it worse."

Nutrition expert questions obesity claims

Published: 10:15AM Thursday July 12, 2012 Source: ONE News

Source: Reuters

A nutrition expert has questioned a scholar's claims that obesity is not a health problem.

Elaine Rush told TV ONE's Breakfast this morning that she is concerned by Dr Cat Pause's assertion that obesity is not necessarily a serious health issue.

Rush, a Professor of Nutrition at Auckland University of Technology, disputes Massey University lecturer Pause's claim that "the science [on obesity] isn't as clear cut as what we might like to believe".

Professor Rush said that Pause's claims contradict research that has proves the carrying of excess weight is dangerous for people's health.

"It's not just how much you weigh for your height, it's where it is in the liver, pancreas, and places that you can't see," Rush said.

The last Ministry of Health Nutrition Survey found that one in three adults were overweight (37.0%) and one in four were obese (27.8%).

Rush says that the chances of developing obesity-related diseases such as diabetes start at conception.

"If a mother has gestational diabetes, which she is more likely to do if she is carrying excess body fat, than that child is at least four times more likely to have diabetes in their life."

Practical Nutrition: Lycopene makes tomatoes a good pick

By: MARY-JO SAWYER | SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Published: July 11, 2012 Updated: July 11, 2012 - 12:00 AM

When I moved to Richmond in the early 1980s, I had never heard of a Hanover tomato. Certainly we ate tomatoes in southwestern Virginia, but I had never witnessed such a fascination with this beautiful red fruit.

Botanically a tomato is a fruit. But it's closer nutritionally to a vegetable and most of us prefer to use them as vegetables in savory dishes. Whatever you call tomatoes, enjoy them because of their nutrients.

Tomatoes are low in calories and a good source of vitamins A and C. One medium tomato has 25 calories, 1 gram protein, no fat, 5 grams carbohydrate, 1 gram fiber, 20 milligrams sodium and 20 milligrams calcium. They're also a good source of the antioxidant lycopene.

Lycopene helps protect our cells from damage that can possibly lead to premature aging, heart disease and cancer.

Some studies show that consuming diets high in lycopene, and fruits and vegetables, can help prevent prostate, lung, bladder, cervical, skin and stomach cancers. It also might reduce the risk for heart disease and macular degeneration.

Lycopene provides the reddish colors of some foods. Tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon and guava are the best sources.

Tomatoes have the highest concentration of lycopene, but it is absorbed better from cooked tomatoes, as in tomato sauce, rather than raw ones. Lycopene is fat-soluble, so add a bit of oil to the recipe to increase absorption.

While we have to make do with greenhouse tomatoes in the winter, locally grown vine-ripened tomatoes taste the best.

When selecting tomatoes, look for those that are firm and shiny. Size and shape vary, but they should have smooth skins without any cracks, blemishes or bruises. Colors range from red or reddish-orange to yellow or pink. Smell the tomato at the stem. It's a good tomato if it has a garden-fresh aroma.
