Nutrition expert calls for IOC to drop junk food

AUT media release Friday 10 August 2012

Nutrition expert calls for IOC to drop junk food

Corporate, commercial sponsorship agreements with International and National Olympic Committees are undermining the future for our children, says a leading nutrition expert.

AUT professor of nutrition Elaine Rush says the NZOC should put pressure on their colleagues at the IOC to remove the public exposure to McDonalds and Coca Cola as major sponsors of the Olympics.

The IOC five rings along with McDonalds and Coca Cola are among the most recognisable brands in the word.

Collectively these three brands have immense power, and they will leave a legacy not of corporate social responsibility but of marketing junk food to children.

One ad, which has been screening during the games, features a small child eating McDonalds chips while watching the Olympics," says Elaine Rush.

We know that children look up to the athletes at the Olympics and rightly so. They are amazing athletes who have dedicated their lives to representing their country by achieving at the highest level.

Millions of children receive the message linking fast food and drink with sporting achievement. This will not only be detrimental for their long-term health but adversely affects all of society. Products from both Coca Cola and McDonalds are energy rich but nutrient-poor. So not only is this adding to the obesity epidemic it is leading to our children having a lack of essential vitamins and minerals.

Maybe McDonalds and Coca Cola are moving in the right direction by introducing healthier options but these foods and drink options still represent a fraction of their total sales.

Barangay Aides Boost Nutrition Drive

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) play a key role in the implementation of nutrition programs.

The BNS reach out to poor households in remote villages and upland areas to bring governments health and nutrition services, said Jemma M. Bacongallo, president of Provincial Association of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Antique.

Crossing rivers, walking through slippery roads and steep slopes just to reach far-flung communities during Operation Timbang, Parents Nutrition Classes among other activities is a great challenge to us BNS, Bacongallo said.

She said the BNS are inspired most by the thought that we are not working just for our honorarium or reward, but we are on a mission to empower families to become more caring to their children by putting priority to their health, nutrition and education.

Antique has 642 BNS covering 590 barangays, 19 of which are in the island town of Caluya, 3 are in the island barangays of Culasi and most are in the upland areas of the province.

There are barangays especially with big populations that have two or more BNS but most have only one BNS with sitios (villages) located far from each other.

What made the Province of Antique more challenging is the fact that it ranked no. 1 in Region 6 in terms of malnutrition, said Bacongallo.

We have done our best, and remain committed to work hard, however, attending to the health and nutrition problems is no joke. We need more resources, health workers and most importantly cooperation of families, she added.

We are glad that the Department of the Interior and Local Government has issued a Memorandum Circular to all Punong Barangays not to replace us with their own appointees every time the new Punong Barangay is elected, if we are still active in performing our task, said Bacongallo.

As we pledged to do the best we can, she said, we appeal to the local officials to be kind and understanding to our needs, much more our safety while performing our duties.

Cooking, veggie display contests highlight end of Nutrition Month in Basilan

by Rene V. Carbayas

ISABELA CITY, Basilan Without cooking and vegetable booth display contests, the Nutrition Month observance is meaningless, said Maria Jennesa S. Tubongbanua, Isabela City nutrition action officer .

The city highlights veggie cooking and vegetable booth display contests at the end of celebration of the 38th National Nutrition Month.

Twenty of the 45 barangays in the city participated in the vegetable display contest. The veggie booth of Aguada Barangay got the nod of the judges and was awarded best booth.

This year, the different city department heads, including units of the Philippine National Police, will compete in the veggie cooking contest.

Government employees displayed their cooking abilities in preparing nutrition-rich meal that is cost-efficient and palatable, most especially for kids.

The entry from the Provincial Police Office won first place with their vegetable barbeque (stir-fry mix vegetables with barbeque sauce).

The recipe of ginataang kalabasa at sitaw with bulad, and kalderay won second and third places, respectively.

In her message, Isabela City Mayor Cherrylyn Santos-Akbar urged the public to plant vegetables in their backyards, as she anchored her message to this years theme, Pagkain ng Gulay Ugaliin, Araw-araw itong ihain.

She reiterated the benefits of eating vegetables and encouraged parents to make it a daily habit to serve kids with vegetables.

Global Nutrition Event, 12 August 2012

01 August 2012

Almost one in three of the worlds poorest children cannot reach their full potential due to malnutrition. As the Olympics close, Prime Minister David Cameron, will call on the world to take the action needed to transform the life chances of millions of children before the next Olympic Games in 2016.

A central part of Londons successful bid for the Games has been the legacy it will create for Britain reinvigorating one of the poorest parts of the country and inspiring a whole generation of young people. We hope that this event on the closing day of the Games will mean that London 2012 also has a lasting legacy for millions more children around the world by improving their nutrition and giving them the opportunity to fulfil their potential too.

The spirit of the Olympics is about athletes from all over the word striving to achieve their potential. But for around 170 million children today, their potential will already be limited by the time they are two years old. Stunting, the result of a prolonged poor dietor infection in early childhood, affects growth and physical ability. Stunted children may do less well at school and go on to earn less. Intervening in the first 1,000 days from the start of pregnancy can stop poor nutrition leading to permanent damage.

A range of highly cost-effective direct actions can help ensure that children get the right nutrients their bodies need to develop (such as preventing and treating vitamin deficiency). Ensuring people get enough food, clean water, better sanitation and education for mothers and children are vital too.

Generating the political will and leadership to address malnutrition is an even greater challenge. Countries which have taken concerted action to reduce under-nutrition have shown remarkably fast rates of reduction. Brazil, Peru, Thailand and China are among these.

The UN Secretary General recently challenged us all to create a world free from stunting. A new global target to reduce the number of stunted children by 40% by 2025 has been agreed by the World Health Assembly. The Scaling up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, to which 28 countries have now signed up, is developing the framework for monitoring progress against stunting targets. The G8 New Alliance on Food and Nutrition Security is committed to supporting SUN in the scale-up.

On 12 August, Prime Minister David Cameron will challenge global leaders to step up efforts to improve nutrition and reduce the rate of stunting among the worlds poorest children between now and the next Olympics in 2016.

The Global Nutrition Event will help to strengthen these commitments by identifying pioneering new ways of working to tackle malnutrition and bringing in new champions to support the global movement.

DENR-IX joins the 38th National Nutrition Month (NNM) Celebration

by H. A. Ascura/DENR-IX PR

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region -IX, has conducted various activities in support to the observance of the National Nutrition Month (NNM) pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 491 or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines with this years theme Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain.

Regional Executive Director (RED) Arleigh J. Adorable led his officials and employees in attending a Nutrition Seminar which was held last July 9, 2012 at the Office of the RED Covered Court DENR, Sta. Maria, Pagadian City, Zamboanga Del Sur.

Nutrition Officer III Nimfa D. Ekong from the National Nutrition Council- Zamboanga City was the resource speaker. According to her, the month long observance aims to increase vegetable consumption; promote vegetable gardening as a source of additional food and income; and increase demand for vegetables can help local vegetable farmers.

In her power point presentation, Ms. Ekong explained the rationale of the NNM theme: 1) Filipinos are eating less and less vegetables. Based on food consumption surveys conducted by Dept. of Science & Technology (DOST) Food & Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), Filipinos on average are eating less and less vegetables per day in the last three (3) decades. From 145 grams per day of vegetables in 1978, consumption has decreased to 110 grams per day in 2008. Based on the 2012 NNM Talking Points, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends eating a minimum of 400 grams of vegetables and fruits per day which is equivalent to five (5) servings per day with 3 servings of vegetables per day. 2) Vegetables as part of a healthy diet can help prevent major non-communicable disease. Adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk for cardiovascular diseases, stomach cancer, and colorectal cancer. 3) Consumption of vegetables can help micronutrient deficiencies. Eating a variety of vegetables together with fruits ensures an adequate intake of most micronutrients, dietary fibers and a host of essential non-nutrient substances. 4) Having vegetable gardens in the household can increase supply and availability of vegetables for families. Only 67.7% or 7 out of every 10 households had vegetable gardens or fruit trees based on the 2008 National Nutrition Survey.

Ms. Ekong made mention that malunggay plant (from its roots, barks, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds) contains more nutritional value compared to other vegetables. She also shared technique on how to cook vegetables mixed with malunggay fruits.

The display of NNM streamer, press release as well as the conduct of radio program and guesting over DXKP-RPN in Pagadian City were undertaken by DENRs public affairs office to raise public awareness and participation while the livehood training-workshop was sponsored by DENRs Gender and Development (GAD) in cooperation with Technical Education and Skills Development Administration (TESDA) -ZDS Provincial Office.

New School Cafeteria Guidelines Make A Healthier Back-To-School Season

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- When students arrive at school this fall, their cafeteria will look a lot different. School meals must meet new federal nutrition standards requiring more whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables and less sodium and calories, as detailed in an article in the July issue of Food Nutrition & Science.

"With the ever-increasing childhood obesity rates, the government had to step in and help guide schools to provide healthier options for children," says Phil Lempert, founder of Food Nutrition & Science and CEO of The Lempert Report and SupermarketGuru.com. "I support these efforts and am confident the better foods will not only help their bodies, but their minds too."

Every school meal will come with fat free or 1percent milk to provide the calcium kids need for strong bones, and lunch entrees will meet strict limits on saturated and trans fats. Cafeterias will serve a wider variety of vegetables each week, including vitamin packed choices like broccoli, sweet potatoes and red pepper strips, and more fiber-rich beans and legumes.

Also in this month's issue results from a recent study from the Economic Research Service that shows price increases for some high-calorie foods and beverages can lead to lower children's BMI (body mass index). According to the study, a 10 percent increase in the price of sodas lowered BMI .42 percent over a year, and that same increase in the price of 100 percent juices and starchy vegetables lowered BMI .3 percent over a year.

Among other informative articles, this month also includes an interview with Deb Roussou, author of 350 Best Vegan Recipes, and Jerry Lynch, chief sustainability officer for General Mills.

Nutrition council acts on malnutrition cases

Sunday, July 29, 2012

BANGUED, Abra -- Members of the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) has been doubling efforts to trim down malnutrition rate in the province, the highest in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

As part of the various activities being carried out like health education, the PNC is going around the province this Nutrition Month, checking on the implementation of the nutrition programs of the municipal health units.

Win US$500. Join Sun.Star Cebu Yearbook Video Contest.

Abra has the highest rate of malnutrition in the entire Cordillera region, posting 12.77 percent malnutrition rate in 2011, but down from 14.25 percent malnutrition rate in 2010.

Mary June Adriatico-Algarne, provincial nutritionist, said a total of 4,138 children out of the 32,000 children in Abra are recorded as malnourished.

Per statistical report of the Abra Integrated Provincial Health Office, the following are the top 10 malnourished municipalities in the province: Danglas 26.34 percent; Pilar 22.36 percent; Lagangilang 21.86 percent; Tineg 19.04 percent; San Quintin 18.93 percent; San Isidro 18.26 percent; Malibcong 17.25 percent; Tayum 15.45 percent; Manabo 13.70 percent; and Boliney 12.90 percent.

Most of the malnourished children are those who are underweight, which Algarne said, could be attributed to poverty as indicated by the lack of food, especially vegetables and other nutritious food that are supposed to be given to children on a daily basis.

Aside from the inadequacy of food, another reason or cause of malnutrition is the inappropriate intake or wrong choices of food, especially among children, who love to eat junk foods.

The PNC effort is backed by Nutrition Month celebration's theme, Pagkain ng Gulay ugaliin; Araw-araw itong ihain to remind parents of the importance of giving their children vegetables and other nutritious food that boost the health condition of the family members. (Maritess Beas)

Nutrition is tough. But it becomes even more difficult when you're training for a triathlon and have to fuel your body for three sports and for hours of practice. In this week's Segment of "Tri it Again," our Katie Gibas tells us the best nutrition to maximize performance during triathlon training and races.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Fueling your body for a triathlon can be tough.

"It's taken a lot of getting used to. I've been writing down everything I eat and when I eat it. And then chronicling my workout and how I feel," said Laura Currey, a Cicero resident.

Everything you eat has the potential to either make or break your performance.

"It definitely makes a difference on the workout. Whether it's something youre eating or not drinking enough water, the next day you can definitely feel that in a bike or a run or a swim with cramps, stitches in your side, calf cramps," said Currey.

During training athletes need to eat consistently and consume the right kind of calories, especially fruits and vegetables.

"You need fuel. You need to keep those muscles fueled. You need to not be burning muscle when you're out there doing longer workouts. So constant, healthy eating is my advice," said Brendan Jackson, the Fleet Feet Triathlon Training Program Director.

Wockhardt closes nutrition business sale to Danone

Litigation shadow off Rs 1,280-cr deal

Mumbai, July 26:

The uncertainty over drug maker Wockhardts sale of its nutrition business to Danone has ended.

The company has closed the Rs 1,280-crore transaction, Wockhardt said on Thursday.

Despite the deal with Danone being formalised last August, Wockhardt had some heart-stopping moments, as litigation involving its unhappy bond-holders cast its shadow on this deal as well.

An attempt in 2009 by Wockhardt to sell its nutrition business to Abbott fell through precisely for that reason Wockhardt was unable to resolve debt restructuring issues with some of its lenders.

The Abbott deal was for Rs 600 crore. But Wockhardt sealed the Danone deal at Rs 1,600 crore.

Of this amount, about Rs 640 crore would go to Wockhardt Ltd, and an equal amount to Wockhardt EU, and Rs 320 crore to Carol Info Services, a source familiar with the deal said.

But worries over the Danone deal increased as the March 2012 timeline to seal the deal, mentioned by Wockhardt Executive Chairman Dr Habil Khorakiwala, also lapsed.

Debt-saddled Wockhardt had started exiting non-core businesses after it hit the hard times in 2008.

ARAMARK Creates Hub of Health and Nutrition Education to Help Denver Residents Live Healthier Lives

DENVER, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --In the neighborhoods of west Denver, many residents, particularly the elderly, suffer from nutrition-related illnesses, like high rates of diabetes and heart disease. The problem is compounded by lack of access to adequate nutrition education and grocery stores that offer good selections of fresh, healthy food.

Today ARAMARK, the global professional services company, will create an ARAMARK Building Community Opportunity Zonethat will be a hub for ongoing nutrition and wellness programs at Southwest Improvement Council (SWIC), which provides health and human services programs, affordable housing, meals for senior citizens and other services to underserved neighborhoods of west Denver. In partnership with the SWIC, the company will also launch a series of health and wellness workshops to help combat health issues facing many local residents

"Obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases are major issues in our community, especially for the elderly. In fact, more than 15 percent of Coloradans over 65 suffer from diabetes," said Jan Marie Belle, SWIC's executive director. "People in this area often have a difficult time finding nutritious food. Our partnership with ARAMARK, and the work they are doing here today to create a place for our families to focus on health and nutrition, will be key to overcoming barriers to healthy lifestyles."

This effort is part of ARAMARK Building Community (ABC), the company's global volunteer and philanthropic program focused on strengthening local community centers and helping struggling families in 50 cities in the U.S. and abroad. Through ABC, employees use their culinary, hospitality, food and nutrition, facilities management and human resources expertise to create strong and vital communities.

"The mission of ARAMARK Building Community is to put our skills to work to improve neighborhoods by working with local community centers to enhance their capacity and programs. Our culinary and nutrition experts help people achieve healthier lifestyles that are essential to leading happy, productive lives," said Carl Mittleman, Regional Vice President for ARAMARK Sports and Entertainment. "Through our partnership with SWIC, we've been helping people succeed and neighborhoods thrive."

The ABC Opportunity Zone will include a new community health garden, created by the participating ARAMARK volunteers, to help senior citizens who are in need of access to fresh, healthy foods. The garden will supplement the center's existing food pantry and be available to the dozens of seniors who visit the center each day, including those who rely on the center for their daily lunch. In addition, an unused outdoor area will be transformed into a welcoming outdoor classroom, and will serve as a dedicated space for local residents to learn about nutrition and healthy and active lifestyles.

ARAMARK volunteers also donated healthy food items such as canned fruits and vegetables and whole-grain cereals for SWIC's food pantry, and a variety of gardening tools for the center's senior citizens to use in the new community garden.

Throughout the year, ARAMARK culinary and nutrition experts will host wellness educational classes for residents to help them understand health issues and identify solutions such as workshops on "Diabetes and Your Health," and "Shopping for Health." Classes will include healthy cooking demonstrations and nutritional information at the annual health and wellness day.

About Southwest Improvement Council (SWIC) Southwest Improvement Council is a nonprofit charity formed in 1987 by the residents of Westwood, an impoverished neighborhood in urban southwest Denver. SWIC's purpose is to improve living conditions for its residents through civic engagement, health and human service programs, and affordable housing, by identifying and building on the assets of the people in the community. SWIC's first projects included neighborhood cleanups, home repairs for seniors, and after-school education programs for children. Today SWIC provides housing counseling, meals and food for seniors, exercise and fitness programs, health and disease-prevention programs, afterschool programs for youth, evening recreation and gang-diversion programs, an urban wildlife refuge and 19 units of affordable multi-family housing.
