Global sports nutrition market to top $6 billion by 2018, report says

Revamped, more complete product lines that are connecting with new customers are driving growth in the sports nutrition market, according to a new report.

The report, by Global Industry Analysts, Inc., projects that the global market for sports and fitness nutrition supplements will reach $6.17 billion by 2018. The report lists as a key driver something that has been noted in recent product launches, namely the ramification of the market in terms of product offerings, target consumers and sales outlets.

Sports nutrition offerings have historically followed the market, the report notes. In years past, the people most devoted to sports and fitness were a select crew, either certain physically-active groups such as professional athletes or body builders who formed their won distinct subculture and spent most of their time in dedicated gyms. The exercise engaged in by most people was fairly gentle by modern standards.

Now, however, many more regular people have embraced far-ranging fitness goals even as, paradoxically, populations in the Western world continue to get fatter. Marathon running races in the US continue to set attendance records, and new branded fitness regimens like Zumba or CrossFit show up regularly.

The new customers groups that are increasingly becoming an area of interest for various sports and fitness nutrition supplement companies include weekend fitness or sports enthusiasts and people who are interested in maintaining their health by using supplement products, the reports authors note.

With growing interest from such users, sports nutrition products, which were previously available only in gyms and health food stores, are now available in mainstream mass market outlets such as super markets and convenience stores, they said.

Sports supplement manufacturers seeking a greater share of the market are therefore leveraging this trend and are investing substantially in research to develop novel products that can carry a natural claim, the authors note.

You can use the Percent Daily Value (%DV) listed on the Nutrition Facts Label as a guide to determine if a serving of food is high or low in these nutrients. To help reduce your overall risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, be sure not to go above 100% of the Daily Value for sodium, total fat, and cholesterol each day. National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Hyderabad would undertake a fresh district-level survey, likely from February end, to find out the nutrition levels, their impact on children and the probable causes of undernourishment.

"The survey would commence once the administrative approval is received and it would last for six months," commissioner of women and child development, Manohar Agnani told HT.

The NIN had undertaken a nutrition survey in the state in year 2010 (March to September) and the results were released in August 2011. The survey has showed that 51.9% of the rural children below five years of age in the state were underweight. In addition, 48.9% of children were found stunted (height Satna Umaria Barwani Dindori Alirajpur lesser than average for their age) while 25.8% children were found wasted (weight lesser than average for their height)-a sign of short-term acute malnutrition. Though the figures were quite less compared with those highlighted by the National Family Health Survey-III (for 200506 released in 2009), the high percentage of undernourished children had sent alarm bells ringing for the government. NFHS-III (rural) had put the number of underweight children in MP at a shocking 62.7%-highest in the country.

The NIN figures are being used while implementing the flagship Atal Child Health and Nutrition Mission of the state government. The state women and child development department is planning to conduct the fresh survey to find out the impact of the different schemes as well as the mission on the nutrition level of the children.

Apart from finding the nutrition status of children, the survey would also look at the source of income of the families surveyed, their drinking water source, registration for antenatal care for pregnant women, place of delivery (government or private hospital or home), who conducted the delivery (doctor, health workers, etc. immunisation and Vitamin A supplementation status of the women, breastfeeding and child feeding practices, sources said.

School nutrition professionals go beyond the daily lunch menu

BROOKSVILLE The Hernando County School Nutrition Association is a group of about 150 members and is the local branch of the National School Nutrition Association.

"It's a professional organization that supports the endeavors of school food service professionals," said Lori Drenth, the Hernando County School District's food and nutrition services director.

"We try to do things locally to support and show the public that school nutrition professionals care about students and what goes on in our community," Drenth said. "We do fundraisers. We do yard sales (and) pasta sales to raise funds to support graduates interested in food service or nutrition fields."

The group has also recently been selling cookbooks.

Students interested in the scholarship opportunity can apply through their guidance counselors or culinary arts teachers. Drenth said the organization tries to award at least two $500 scholarships a year. Past recipients, she said, wanted to attend the famed culinary school Johnson and Wales, go into medicine or even biochemistry.

Besides providing scholarships through fundraising, Drenth said, the association sponsors training and professional certification in nutrition, safety and sanitation. The Florida School Nutrition Association puts out a publication, and the local groups contribute to the "Chapter Chatter" section.

The association's president is Fran Thomas, Chocachatti Elementary food and nutrition services assistant manager. The president-elect, who takes office July 1, is Beverly Dube-O'Looney, a Winding Waters K-8 food nutrition assistant. The treasurer/secretary is Winding Waters K-8 food and nutrition services manager Jackie Nelson. The certification chairwoman is Diana Bartlett, West Hernando Middle School food and nutrition services assistant manager.

The scholarship committee coordinator is Jennifer Patrick, Moton Elementary's food and nutrition services assistant manager. Patti White is the chapter reporter for the Florida Food Services publication; she is Fox Chapel Middle School's food and nutrition services manager. Carol Monroe, a West Hernando Middle School food nutrition assistant, collects dues.

Drenth is the local chapter's adviser.

Pfizer 4th-Quarter Profit Surges Amid Gain From Nutrition Unit Sale

Pfizer Inc. (PFE) reported a surge in fourth-quarter profit on a gain from the sale of its nutrition unit, while generic competition for cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor contributed to a 7% sales decline.

The drug maker's quarterly results exceeded Wall Street expectations, and Pfizer issued an initial 2013 financial forecast that roughly bracketed analysts' current estimates.

Pfizer shares rose 66 cents, or 2.4%, to $27.50, in recent trading and earlier touched a multi-year high. The stock is up 28% over the past 12 months.

Pfizer is trying to bounce back from the late 2011 loss of U.S. exclusivity for its cholesterol-lowering pill Lipitor, which triggered generic competition that eroded sales of what was once the best-selling prescription drug in the world.

The company has tried to overcome the Lipitor loss by expanding sales of other drugs that remain patent-protected, such as the pain drug Lyrica, as well as introducing new products with sizeable market potential.

These include Xeljanz, a new treatment for rheumatoid arthritis that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November, and Eliquis, an anticlotting drug co-developed with Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) that was cleared by FDA in late December. Analysts expect the drugs to eventually generate billions of dollars in annual sales.

At the same time, Pfizer has taken steps perceived to be "shareholder friendly" over the past two years, including share buybacks, spending cuts, as well as the divestitures of certain non-pharmaceutical assets. Pfizer sold its nutrition business to Nestle for $11.85 billion cash in November, and it will soon stage an initial public offering of up to a 19.8% stake in its animal health unit, Zoetis, with the potential to shed its remaining stake at a later date.

The Zoetis IPO is expected Friday in what would be the largest IPO from a U.S. company since Facebook Inc.'s (FB) last May.

During a conference call Tuesday morning, Pfizer Chief Executive Ian Read reiterated comments suggesting the company could conduct further splits. He said Pfizer was evolving toward two business models, each with separate management: one with patented, innovative drugs and the other with off-patent drugs. He said Pfizer would eventually have to decide whether shareholders want to invest in these as two distinct companies, but that such a decision wasn't a near-term priority.

Mr. Read also said he expected the company to continue to pursue "bolt-on" acquisitions and other business-development deals to supplement the company's internal research-and-development efforts. He didn't, however, set a maximum value for potential deals, and said the company wouldn't rule out any deal that adds to shareholder value.
