How to find good nutrition advice

Anyone can claim to be a nutritionist, which is why finding a good one can be a challenge. Licensure and credentials are an important place to start, but they dont necessarily ensure quality, some experts say.

Nutrition is a controversial and changing area. Keeping up to date requires a lot of work, said Dr. Stephen Devries, executive director of the nonprofit Gaples Institute for Integrative Cardiology in Deerfield, Ill.

The best professionals, he said, have undergone a rigorous formal training program and continuously update their nutrition knowledge.

Red flags that your nutrition professional may be unqualified include over-the-top promises such as a guarantee of permanent or quick weight loss or the idea that diet can cure cancer. Also be wary of practitioners who sell products and who have a one-size-fits-all philosophy. If they cant support their claims with scientific research instead of anecdotes, consider one who can.

Marion Nestle, who has spent her career telling people how to eat, is not a registered dietitian but holds a New York State license as a nutritionist/dietitian. She has a masters in public health nutrition and a doctorate in molecular biology.

Nestle suggests approaching anyones advice, including her own, with skepticism. She likes nutritionists with critical thinking skills, those who understand how and why people eat the way they do, focus on food rather than nutrients, and are able to read current research as well as interpret and apply it in context.

I know people trained in dietetics who can do that, said Nestle, a professor in the department of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. But I know even more nutritionists who are not dietitians who also do that. Would licensing straighten all this out? Only if it sets academic standards that all nutritionists must meet.

TYPES OF NUTRITIONISTS

Consumers should know theres a big difference between the training of a certified nutrition specialist and a certified nutrition consultant. Heres a look at the meaning behind the credentials.

CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board Continues to Engage with Stakeholders

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb 13, 2013) -

This document corrects and replaces the press release that was sent today at 10:29 a.m. EST.

Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board members were in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from February 6 to 7 to meet with registered retailers and suppliers to discuss their views on the Nutrition North Canada (NNC) program.

"The partnerships with retailers and suppliers are a very important part of NNC as their feedback enables us to deliver the program more effectively," said the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. "The Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board continues to play a key role in communicating the views of Northerners and other stakeholders to the Government of Canada."

The Advisory Board met with retailers and suppliers to hear their views on how the NNC program is operating and on what could be done to ensure that the communities they serve continue to benefit fully from the NNC subsidies and the greater supply chain flexibility that it supports. The Board also heard from officials with the Government of Manitoba and community nutrition workers who presented a number of successful nutrition projects using Nutrition North Canada funds. The Board also met with officials from the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, representing First Nations in Northern Ontario.

"Board members heard first-hand from retailers, suppliers and community stakeholders about the positive impact NNC is having on communities," said Wilfred Wilcox, Chair of the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board. "We continue to learn from individuals who are pivotal to the operation of the Nutrition North Canada program and this helps us to better fulfill our role of providing advice to guide the management and activities of the program."

The Advisory Board first met with retailers and suppliers in February 2012. Retailers and suppliers provided early insights on how the program was operating and also offered suggestions for the future operation of the program. As part of the NNC program, accountability measures for retailers and suppliers are in place to ensure that the NNC subsidy is being passed on to consumers.

Members of the NNC Advisory Board represent a wide range of northern perspectives and interests. They meet several times a year in person and by teleconference and have held public meetings in Iqaluit, Nunavut; Kuujjuaq, Quebec; Norman Wells, Northwest Territories and most recently, Nain, Labrador.

Bluewave: Hydrolyzed fish protein set for US sports nutrition splash

New sports nutrition product launches containing a new hydrolyzed fish protein are imminent, says Bluewave Marine Ingredients as it brings its branded AminoMarine ingredient to market.

As NutraIngredients-USA first reported several years ago , advances with membrane technology allowed Bluewave to produce fish protein isolated that meets both the organoleptic and economic requirements for the broader food ingredient/ supplement marketplace.

The membrane system works by having one stream enter and three streams exit. The main stream is separated into a high fat plus protein stream, a zero fat plus protein stream, and a biogenic fraction. The fishiness is removed by the membrane, since it removes the oil and fat.

Mark Rottmann, COO for BlueWave Marine Ingredients, told us that, after several years of development, the company is now ready to offer the hydrolyzed fish protein for the sports nutrition market.

The protein offers a complete profile of the essential amino acids, he said, and the price is competitive with standard whey, with the added benefit that AminoMarine is hydrolyzed. It is at a discount compared with hydrolyzed whey, he added.

Arnold

Californias Genomyx will launch the first dietary supplement for sports nutrition containing the ingredient at the upcoming Arnold Expo in Columbus, OH .

Armando Lopez, Genomyxs CEO, told NutraIngredients-USA that the company is proud to work in conjunction with Bluewave Marine Ingredients to bring their AminoMarine to the marketplace.

In working so closely with the developer of this hydrolyzed fish peptide product, Genomyx can claim to offer the purest and cleanest protein option available; a fat- and oil-free option also devoid of manmade antibiotics, hormones, and any genetic modification(s).

Schiff Nutrition and M&C Saatchi ask consumers “Whose Heart Do You Love?”

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Schiff Nutrition Group, Inc. and M&C Saatchi NY have launched a Valentines Day marketing campaign, Whose Heart Do You Love, for one of the leading and fastest-growing Krill Oil supplements in America, MegaRed. The innovative social media and sampling campaign, the first of its kind in the category, was timed to coincide with both Valentines Day and National Heart Health Month.

Jennifer Steeves-Kiss, Chief Marketing Officer of Schiff Nutrition said: Consumers really love the product once they try it, so sampling is an important part of getting the word out. Since Valentines Day is about celebrating who you love, we wanted to use that insight to turn the sampling model on its head and expand the reach of our effort.

Through a custom Facebook application, MegaRed allows consumers to request a free product sample for their loved ones. As a bonus, the person requesting a sample on behalf of a friend also receives a free sample for themselves.

As part of the effort, Schiff is making a $100,000 donation to the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease (www.womenheart.org). This component, noted Steeves-Kiss, is meant to galvanize consumer participation around a worthy cause. It should be noted that according to a recent study by Latitude Research, 84% of people say they share online to support a cause.

Pierre Lipton, Chief Creative Officer of M&C Saatchi NY, said that given the sampling effort is social in nature, so is the promotion behind it. Theres virtually no paid media supporting the campaign. Instead, the brand is relying heavily on peer-to-peer distribution through Facebook and an influencer component on Twitter where several celebrities are tweeting their support for the effort. Among those are Jennie Garth, Toni Braxton and Joy Bauer, all of whom have a personal interest in supporting heart health. Blogger outreach is also being used to support the effort.

The campaign is further supported by a playful, one-minute animated video tied to the idea that no matter whose heart you love, keep that heart healthy this Valentines Day with MegaRed Omega-3 Krill Oil. Lipton added: We thought there was something kind and sweet about the notion that love, like people, comes in many forms. And that regardless of who you care for, doing something that could keep them healthy is actually pretty romantic. M&C Saatchi partnered with the Los Angeles based animation company Stardust on the video, which will primarily live on MegaReds YouTube and Facebook channels.

M&C Saatchi NY CEO Jeff Brooks said: Schiffs challenge to develop an idea that would drive trial through earned media was incredibly appealing. Doing more with less is the new reality for marketers, despite many brands remaining skeptical about how to use social media to drive commerce.

While social platforms are still primarily about community engagement, the explosion of commerce-supported experiences such as Pinterest, Svpply and Etsy suggests that social shopping is the new frontier. There is a growing trend around social commerce with Facebook driving over 25% of referral traffic to business websites, and Gartner Research suggesting that by 2015 we can expect 50% of web sales to occur through social media. Furthermore, Valentines Day is one of the most social times of year both offline and online. According to the National Retail Federation, last year 141 million cards were exchanged, making it the 2nd largest holiday for greeting cards; and 66% of women and 44% of men talked about Valentines Day on social networks.

Top Nutrition Trends of 2013

Sure, well all still be talking about gluten-free in the coming year, but there are plenty of exciting new nutrition trends, too. Check out our list and get a jumpstart on healthy eating the 2013 way.

RELATED: Top Nutrition Trends of 2012

Cauliflower and mini greens: Move over, kale. One of the hot nutrition trends in the veggie category this year is expected to be cauliflower. Like the curly green, its versatile and packed with nutrients: One cup has nearly 90 percent of your recommended daily value of vitamin C. Cauliflower has been a staple lately on the menus of NYCs fabulous restaurants, says registered dietitian Laura Cipullo, owner of Laura Cipullo Whole Nutrition Services in New York, whos sampled broccolis cousin mashed, curried and caramelized. I personally love to coat an entire head of cauliflower with Dijon mustard, nonfat plain Greek yogurt or canola oil mayonnaise and bake it for an hour.

If youre specifically looking for a trendy new green, check out tiny leafies like baby romaine, mini bok choy and microgreens, which are increasing in popularity, says registered dietitan Julieanna Hever, host of Veria Living TVs "What Would Julieanna Do?"Enjoy them as you would other mixed lettuce varieties or in smoothies, stir-fries, and grain or pasta dishes.

Veggie-centered meals: Speaking of vegetables, dont be surprised to see them moving to center stage more often, as an increasing number of Americans adopt at least a flexatarian approach to their diet, enjoying more meatless meals.

2013 is predicted to be the year of the plant-based diet, and stores are reflecting the interest, Hever says. Im seeing more faux meat and dairy products, as well as bigger raw food sections in the market.

Restaurant industry forecaster Techtomic also predicts that chefs will step up to the plate to embrace this nutrition trend with more meatless mealsparticularly seasonal or exotic vegetable plates. But consumers should be careful not to assume those are the healthiest meals on the menu.

I think it will be an eye-opening experience when restaurants all start posting calorie countssome vegan meals are no healthier than a burger! says Biggest Loser nutritionist Rachel Beller, a registered dietitian and author of Eat to Lose, Eat to Win: Your Grab-N-Go Action Plan for a Slimmer, Healthier You. You still need to watch the calories and fat.

Bulgur: Burned out on quinoa? Try bulgur, the Middle Eastern grain predicted to be one of the top nutrition trends in 2013. I think were going to see a lot of bulgur for breakfast, Beller says. A cup cooked is about 150 calories, just like oatmeal, but fiber-wise, it has double the amount. Try it with almond milk and a sprinkle of cinnamon, she suggests. But beware: unlike quinoa, this grain does contain wheat, which rules it out for gluten-free diets.

Nutrition NGO responds to COI attack: We cannot “continue to exclude business”

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has defended its work with the global food industry, saying it is a vital partner in nutrition-changing efforts in the developing world and does not represent a conflict of interest (COI).

Nutrition at the global level has made little progress for decades and today there is a crisis which cannot be addressed if we continue to exclude business, said GAIN spokesperson, Steve Godfrey.

The debate comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) stated recently that it wanted to know more about the nature of GAINs food industry links before granting it membership of the World Health Assembly.

essential to engage with those who actually produce and distribute foods

Godfrey added with a billion people hungry, 160 million children stunted and 1.4bn people overweight or obese, we need all stakeholders involved if we are going to solve this problem.

It is also important that we have pragmatic and practical approaches in fighting malnutrition, that are based on evidence and results, not preconception. The fact is that the private sector including farmers produce and distribute virtually all the food which poor people consume.

In order to empower poor people to have and make better nutrition choices for their children, it is essential to engage with those who actually produce and distribute foods.

Briefcase NGO?

Pro-breastfeeding lobbyists last week accused the group that counts most of the worlds big food and ingredient companies as members, as a briefcase NGO, saying GAINS philanthropic work enabled commercial opportunities for its members including infant formula makers.

The conference included lectures on strengthening coaching skills and setting goals for a successful health coaching practice. Attendees also received a welcome event, yoga class, and healthy Mexican meals.

The conference was made possible due to the hard work and initiative of four Integrative Nutrition graduates, who coordinated the event: Ana Arizemendi and Georgina Ferrer, both class of 2011, and Gabriela Bambrick-Santoyo and Caren Laboy, both class of 2012.

The energy and enthusiasm of the Mexican Health Coaches was amazing. We are getting organized not only to support each other, but to really create a positive impact in the health of our country. The call to action is clear, and after this conference there is no doubt we will play an important role in the change we want to see in Mexico, Arizemendi says.

The courses innovative online learning platform reaches students all over the globe, empowering them to launch successful health coaching careers in their local communities.

In addition to the conference, Integrative Nutrition has made several recent strides to support the Hispanic community. Rosenthals book, Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health and Happiness, is now available in Spanish translation. The school also donated $5,000 to Escuela de Parteras Profesionales del Estado de Guerrero, the first professional midwifery school in Mexico that is dedicated to improving nutrition for the most impoverished.

We are so inspired by our students and graduates who take the initiative to organize events that support the growth of our community. Our first Latin American conference was a success, and we are thrilled that our ripple effect of health and happiness is truly having global impact! Rosenthal says.

Nutrition Advocates Blast Marketing of Girl Scouts' Newest Cookie

Nutrition advocates chose National Girl Scout Cookie Day to take the organization to task for marketing the organization's newest cookie as "a delicious new way to get your vitamins."

"It's bad enough that the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. sells cookies to raise money, but it shouldn't pretend that its new 'Mango Crmes with NutriFusion' are nutritionally equivalent to fruit," said the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which fired off a letter Friday to Girl Scouts CEO Anna Maria Chvez.

On the Web page for the cookie's baker, ABC Bakers claims that the cookie's mango-flavored crme filling has "all the nutrient benefits of eating cranberries, pomegranates, oranges, grapes and strawberries."

If there were a badge for misleading marketing, Im afraid the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. just earned it, said Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for CSPI.

In the letter, CSPI asks the Girl Scouts to immediately stop promoting the cookies as "healthful" and "find a healthier way to raise funds."

This isn't the first time the CSPI has gone after the Girl Scouts for adding to the childhood obesity rates with its cookie promotions. Last year, the CSPI took the Girl Scouts to task for a licensing deal with Nestl to co-brand candy bars.

The Girl Scouts were not immediately available for comment.
