York County launches redesigned website – Daily Press

YORK York County launched a redesigned county website Tuesday evening that operates more efficiently, functions better on mobile devices and provides easier access to information from the county's boards and commissions, according to county staff.

The launch encompassed new design for four different county resources: its homepage and main government website, its Yorktown tourism website, its economic development authority website and the website county employees use for work. The web addresses for each website remained the same.

The new website was funded in the county's fiscal year 2017 budget and was built by Civic Plus, a business that creates websites for local governments.

JoAnn Mewborn, the county's webmaster, told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday that the old website, which was 15 years old, had about 70 people managing its content. She said the new website reduced the number of people working on the site to 20, allowing the people who used to have their hands on the website to worry about other aspects of their jobs.

She said the new website is cloud-based and was built with mobile in mind, enhancing its functionality on more devices.

When Mewborn and Paula Hersh, the county's public affairs manager, presented the website to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, the board showed the most excitement for its segment of the site, which packaged all the county's boards and commissions together and made it easier to find agendas and minutes. The documents are also now searchable.

Hersh highlighted a live-streaming feature that allows people to watch board meetings live on the website. The website is also able to upload the meeting video within 24 hours, Hirsch said.

Reyes can be reached by phone at 757-247-4692.

Harford County government receives national awards – Baltimore Sun

The National Association of Counties has recognized Harford County with three NACo Achievement Awards for 2017, County Executive Barry Glassman's administration announced Tuesday.

Harford was recognized for its Harford Streams Summer Adventure, Decisions That Determine Your Destiny, and the County Executives Virtual Town Hall Budget Meeting.

This is the second consecutive year that Glassman's adminstration has earned achievement awards from NACo. Last years awards were for the planning and zoning activity tracker Track-it and the countys multi-faceted approach to the national heroin crisis.

According to the annoucement, NACo is a nonprofit organization comprised of over 3,000 U.S. counties dedicated to healthy, vibrant and safe communities. The annual awards recognize innovative county government programs that produce measurable results.

This summer, explore the natural beauty of Harford County streams, snap selfies at your favorite locations and win prizes in Harford Streams Summer Adventure, a new program developed by the Harford County Department of Public Works' Office of Watershed Protection and Restoration. Harford Streams... (Staff report)

Harford Streams Summer Adventure was developed by the county Department of Public Works Watershed Protection and Restoration Office to raise public awareness and support for healthy waterways.

Citizens in the program visit a variety of local streams, take a selfie photo at each location and upload their photos to the county website to earn a free T-shirt and enter to win other prizes. A dedicated Facebook page and hashtag further promote the program goals on social media.

Last year, nearly 1,200 selfies were submitted picturing citizens from newborns to 80 years old (and several happy dogs), a county press release notes. "Feedback from citizens was overwhelmingly positive, including from lifelong residents who were delighted to discover the beautiful waterways in their own backyard," the release adds.

Decisions That Determine Your Destiny helps senior citizens and their families prepare important legal documents that guide decision-making in case of critical illness or injury.

Developed by the countys Office on Aging under the Department of Community Services, the program offers free legal assistance drafting documents such as a financial power of attorney, advance medical directive and living will, in partnership with the Harford Bar Foundation.

The program offers peace of mind by helping families to avoid disputes and ensure that the wishes of their loved ones are carried out. To date, nearly 700 citizens have participated in the program, with much of the growth in popularity due to word of mouth, the news release states.

The County Executives Virtual Town Hall Budget Meeting increases opportunities for informed citizen engagement in developing the countys annual budget.

Conceived by Glassman and developed by the countys offices of Governmental & Community Relations and Information & Communication Technology, the town hall is a combined virtual and live event for citizens to learn about the county budget process and share budget priorities in a public forum without necessarily being physically present. The virtual town hall began in 2015 and has been held annually since.

In partnership with Harford Cable Network and Harford Community College, the town hall meeting is held on the college campus where attendees can testify in the traditional sense, while others provide real-time input via social media, email and a dedicated phone line, which is then read aloud by a moderator.

According to the county administration, the event also streams live on the County website and to 70,000 cable channel subscribers, "dramatically expanding opportunities beyond those citizens who can attend a public meeting. This in turn provides valuable input for decision-makers."

I would like to thank all of the county employees who thought outside the box and made these programs possible, Glassman said in a statement. I am also proud that my administration has once again been recognized by NACo for developing innovative programs that improve the lives of Harford County citizens.

Mantis PSVR Headphones Review: An Essential Accessory – UploadVR

Ive said it several times: Sonys PlayStation VR (PSVR) is my absolutely favorite VR headset on the market right now from a comfort perspective. Clearly, this was designed as a consumer product end-to-end and I love wearing it. However, it has a lot of problems. The screen door effect is noticeably worse than on the Vive or Rift, there is no true 360 or roomscale tracking, and the motion controllers (PS Move) are a poor substitute for Oculus Touch and the Vive wands.

However, there is another issue thats bothered me ever since the PSVR launched that often goes overlooked and its the lack of a built-in audio solution. The Rift launched with excellent headphones that you can easily flip up or down and the Vive recently got a brand new headstrap that enables that same functionality. Now, the PSVR has its own approximation with the third-party PSVR Mantis heaphones by Bionik.

Bionik is a company thats a made name for itself as of late by creating and selling hardware accessories like charging docks and controller mods for Xbox One, Switch, PS4, and even Samsung Gear VR. Now theyre realizing perhaps their best and most-desired product yet with the detachable Mantis PSVR headphones.

Before the Mantis I was using a white HyperX Cloud headset that goes fully over my entire ear. Theyre extremely comfortable and I also use them for my tablet, Switch, Vive, PC, and pretty much everything else. However, its a hassle to constantly get up and go get them every time I need a headset. Since the PSVR has a built-in microphone and is always on its stand next to the couch when not in use, an elegant audio solution makes a lot more sense than lugging around a headset between every room in my house.

Luckily, installation is dead simple. All you do is clip the headphones onto each side of the headset by expanding the opening until its snug. I wiggled them a bit to make sure they were in the best spot then plugged them into the breakout box just like I would any other pair of headphones. After putting on the headset I just click each side down so it hangs in front of my ear, resting lightly just like the Rift headphones.

The material is different than that of the Rift, though. It doesnt have a mesh-like texture and feels more like some type of plastic or leather exterior. The result is that they still feel extremely comfortable, but dont press against my ear as much. The audio leak is a bit more noticeable as well for people sitting around the wearer, but that shouldnt be an issue. Since the TV already replicates the PSVRs audio no one should notice.

Now the main thing to be aware of is that, depending on what you want your headphones to accomplish, the Mantis may not be for you. If youre looking for something that can block out all outside sound and fully encapsulate you in the illusion of VR, then this isnt for you. The simple fact is that an on-ear hovering headphone is never going to be able to block out exterior sound like an over-ear sound cancelling headset can. Thats just not how sound works.

That being said, if you dont mind a bit of outside sound, or if you actuallywant to be able to quickly lift an earpiece to hear what someone is saying, then these are excellent. As someone that demos VR a lot for friends and family being able to easily lift an earpiece and say something is a godsend.

The cable isnt very long, basically just long enough to reach the audio port with a little bit of slack. If you dont mind the extra hassle, finding some way to attach it to the cord already hanging down from the headset would be a good idea since there is really no reason to ever remove the Mantis from your PSVR once its setup. The clip-on design means you wont find yourself ever using them for anything else.

Other than the necessary PS Camera, the PS Move controllers (required for some games,) and the PS Aim controller (used in some games,) wed contend that the Mantis PSVR headphones may very well be the next best accessory for Sonys VR headset. They clip-on easily, blend in perfectly, and solve an issue thats been frustrating PSVR owners ever since the headset launched. Now lets hope someone figures out a way to improve tracking or give the PS Move controllers analog sticks.

The Mantis is available starting today for $49.99. Visit the official website for more details.

Monkey King Review: Digital Domain’s VR Debut Stumbles – UploadVR

The tale of the Monkey King in the Journey to the West, a classic 16th century Chinese novel, is something youre probably familiar with in some capacity without even knowing it. Some works are simply known as Journey to the West as a direct homage, or the Chinese Odyssey but even not so obvious stories take inspiration from the tale as well, such as the enormously popular Dragon Ball Z manga and anime series. The core of the tale centers onSun Wukong as he completes a journey of self-discovery and mastery of the martial arts.

There is even a video game called Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which was developed by DEXED creators Ninja Theory. This latest iteration of the tale, simply known as Monkey King, is an original animated VR series by Digital Domain, a company thats made its name from impressive visual effects for Hollywood films and commercials. Monkey King is their episodic VR debut.

To be clear, this is not a game in any way. There is a MonkeyKing VR game available on Steam right now from Gene Games Technology, but it has no connection to the Monkey King series from Digital Domain. For all intents and purposes this entry is purely passive and asks you to simply sit, watch, and look around while everything plays out before you.

Weve seen a lot of really impressive and moving pieces in VR that require zero interaction from the viewer. The likes of Dear Angelica and Henry from Oculus Story Studio as well as Allumette and Rose from Penrose Studio all come to mind.

Unfortunately, Monkey King shares very little with those other works. What makes VR such a powerful medium for storytelling is its ability to immerse the viewer in the world like never before and direct attention in clever, subtle ways that arent possible with traditionally flat 2D displays. When a VR experience is at its best its entirely impossible to capture it outside of VR in the same way. Many of these methods are commonly referred to as going beyond the frame of a traditional screen.

In this adaptation of the Monkey King you watch the story unfold before you as a floating observer in the sky. Much of it takes place while your point of view is stationary off to the side, in a tree, or somewhere slightly removed from the scene itself. While this is common for animated shorts in VR, I never really felt part of the story in this case.

Narration is good and does a great job of setting up each scene, but visually I found myself severely underwhelmed. Textures appeared to be flat and lifeless, especially when inspected up close. A bit more detail was afforded to objects around the core of the scene, but if you looked around too much youd start to find the inadequacies.

For a medium like VR, where the user should be encouraged to look around and explore, this seemed like a big missed opportunity. Funneling the viewer to a single point of view at all times made it feel like itd have been just as effective, if not more so, outside of VR completely.

The story itself is told well enough with interesting characters (even if I found myself really disliking the main protagonist) and there is a satisfying arc across the three included episodes. The story is incomplete right now though, which is unfortunate.

Monkey King isnt a bad VR animation, but its just not that great either. The three episodes dovetail together nicely, but it never feels like it really takes advantage of VR as a medium. Visually it felt underwhelming and left a lot to be desired.

Monkey King is available now for PlayStation VR (PSVR) and includes the first three episodes for $9.99. Eventually, its expected to also release for Vive, Rift, Gear VR, Daydream, and Cardboard devices.Read ourContent Review Guidelinesfor more information on how we arrived at this score.

SIGGRAPH: Neurable Lets You Control A Virtual World With Your … – UploadVR

Ive used my eyes to interact with a virtual world before, but startup Neurable just enhanced that experience by reading my thoughts too.

At SIGGRAPH this week the Boston-based startup is showing its modified HTC Vive which include EEG (Electroencephalography)sensors along the interior of the headstrap. This is combined with eye-tracking technology from German firm SMI, which may have just been acquired by Apple. The EEG sensors comb-like structure dug through my hair to subtly make contact against my scalp where they detected brain activity. It is definitely alarming to hear someone outside VR say my brain is looking good.

What followed was a brief training session where a group of objects floated in front of me a train, ball and block among them. Each time one of them rotated I was told to focus on that object and think grab in my mind. I did so a number of times for several of the objects, all successful.

Afterward there was a test. I was told to just think of the object I wanted. I tried not to stare directly at the object I wanted but five out of five times the correct object was picked as I thought about it. A sixth time the wrong object was selected but it occurred as someone was talking to me and I was distracted. As I refocused, almost immediately the correct object moved toward me.

In the video above you can see each of the objects flash. Neurable CEO and President Ramses Alcaide says they are able to detect these flashes in my brain even though they register subconsciously. He said the eye tracking inside the headset wasnt active during the training and test portion of the demonstration. It became active during the next portion of the demo meant to show the potential of the system in a game environment. Heres how Neurable describes it:

Neurable is debutingAwakening,a VR game preview made in partnership witheStudiofuture, at SIGGRAPH 2017 in Los Angeles.Awakeningis a futuristic story reminiscent ofStranger Things: you are a child held prisoner in a government science laboratory. You discover that experiments have endowed you with telekinetic powers. You must use those powers to escape your cell, defeat the robotic prison guards, and free yourself from the lab. The game allows you to manipulate objects and battle foes with your mind, and is played entirely without handheld controllers.

According to Neurable, this works using machine learning to interpret your brain activity in real time to afford virtual powers of telekinesis. The company offers an SDK so Unity developers can integrate the system into a game.

I was able to select a group of objects on the ground of my holding cell just by thinking about them and then use them to try and escape. I was offered some hints from outside VR to escape the room but the selection with my mind worked to grab the objects I wanted. As I moved into a lab, I looked around at the counter tops and thought about the objects to toss at a robot approaching me. One of them was a keyboard. As I thought the word grab it floated toward me. Object after object I tossed at the incoming robots until I progressed through to the end of the level.

We have two modes. Pure EEG mode, which just determines the object you want and brings it to you directly, and we have a mode that is a hybrid BCI [brain-computer interface] mode, and in that mode we can use the eyes as a type of mouse where you can move your eyes nearthe object you want to select, said Alcaide. From there your brain tells us which one you clicked on.

In the video above you can see me sort of covering my face as a kind of surprised reaction each time the system correctly identified which object I wanted. I was frankly in shock I really didnt expect it to work as well as it did. Both this brain-computer interface and the earlier eye tracking demo I tried felt like true super powers.

According to Alcaide, Neurable raised around $2 million and has 13 employees.

I think the future of mixed reality interactions is an ecosystem of solutions that incorporates voice, gesture control, eye tracking and the missing link to that entire puzzle which is brain-computer interfaceswe need some sort of system that prevents the action from happening until the user wants it to happen, and thats where brain-computer interfaces come in, said Alcaide. In my opinion mixed reality cannot become a ubiquitous computing platform like the iPhone, or like the computer, until we have brain-computer interfaces as part of the solution.

The Conquest of Death – HuffPost

Recently, Ive begun teaching Son meditation to a hospice patient. A couple of years ago MRIs revealed that her internal organs were riddled with tumors. After an excruciating treatment of chemotherapy, her doctors informed her there was nothing more they could do. She moved into a hospice and her physicians now predict she has between six months and two years to live.

When I met her, it was hard to guess her age. I couldnt tell whether the chemotherapy had aged her prematurely, but she looked elderly. Still, among the elderly theres a difference between those who expect to live longer and those who think theyll die soon. She obviously belonged to the latter group and the first thing that struck me was the look in her eyes. Im dying.

At our first meeting, she got right to the point, Whats going to happen to me?

Like so many people these days, she didnt belong to any religion, but she considered herself spiritual.

I said, There are two scenarios. In the first one, your consciousness will disappear. In this case, death isnt an experience. Its the end of experience. Its the end of suffering. From this point of view, death is unfamiliar, but its not actually something to be afraid of. Death is literally nothing at all.

The second scenario is that some part of consciousness will somehow survive physical death. It will move on to or manifest itself in some other mode of existence. Maybe it will go to another realm. Maybe it will move into another body. But if a part of consciousness survives, then, again, theres no actual death. One way or the other, death does not exist as a thing to be afraid of. But, on a human level, were afraid of it anyway. We fear the pain of dying, we fear the unknown.

I first became a monk because I wanted an answer to the reality of death and impermanence. I had always been highly aware that all life, including mine, ends in death. But my awareness was only mental. I was a young man, I had a young body. My body didnt feel like it was going to die any time soon. The truth is, it felt like it would never die. There was a disjuncture between what my mind knew and what my body felt. Every dead bug, dried up leaf, meal on my plate, and bit of roadkill that I passed on the highway told me in no uncertain terms what was coming for me. But my body felt glowingly alive and my heart stupidly beat on with clockwork reliability. Like it would do that forever.

But the years passed. One day I looked in the mirror and noticed again, with mild disapproval, the white hairs forming on my head. And then it hit me. Im really going to die. An animal shudder passed through my body. My heart shriveled and I felt my stomach turn inside-out.

Everything changed after that. For the first time in my life, what my mind knew and what my body experienced were in sync.

The patient told me that her chemotherapy treatment had been a nightmare. Every day now she was racked with agonizing pain and she spent all of her energy just enduring it.

But that was nothing, she said, compared to the fear. The not knowing where Im gonna be. That, according to her, was the worst thing.

Would you get on a boat for a year-long voyage without asking where the boat was headed? Would you just gamble with a year of your life like that?

Would you be willing to ride that boat for 70 or 80 years without ever confirming the final destination?

Would you ride that boat the whole time without asking any questions if you knew for a fact that at the end of the trip it will go over a waterfall?

Then, why do we live our entire lives the way we do?

Our society, our culture, our civilization, and each of our individual life plans are built upon a pathological denial of the reality of death. The signs of death the sight of human corpses and terminally ill patients are hidden away in places that people under normal circumstances avoid like theyre radioactive. The symptoms of aging are covered over by make-up, dyes, and wardrobe or theyre literally cut away by cosmetic surgery. Our media subject us to a torrential downpour of the most irrational, obviously deceptive propaganda that has ever been invented: Stay young forever! Look years younger!

Open talk about death is taboo and you broach the topic at the risk of being labeled morbid. At the risk of social censure.

Such a denial of any other obvious fact of life would be considered a symptom of outright mental illness.

But we keep on denying it because we think theres nothing we can do about it. Because, as smart as we think we are, we just cant get our heads around it. Because no one ever taught us how to balance the twin realities of having to live and having to die.

You actually have to know how to do both.

You know that you didnt start dying when you got cancer, right? I asked the patient.

Her eyes lit up and she exclaimed, Yes, yes, I know exactly what you mean! But I didnt know it until now. Were always dying.

Every day of life is a day closer to death.

Its not rocket science, but it never fails to astonish me how poorly even the most brilliant minds think when it comes to the subject of death. Fear completely distorts our reason.

Take, for example, the two most well-publicized ways which scientists have considered for defying death: Cryogenics and uploading our mind into a computer. Even if we could manage such feats, the most obvious thing we can see here is that these are ways of delaying death, not actually eradicating it.

Let's think about this clearly. Either the universe is eternal or its not. If its eternal, then it means that no matter how successfully you clone and enhance your body or how indestructible and replicable the robot body that you build for your mind may be, there is one-trillionth of a chance that some accident will irretrievably destroy this new vehicle for your mind. But in an eternal universe a one-in-a-trillion probability at any given moment is a 100% certainty over time. Eventually, over trillions of trillions of eons, somethings going to get you.

On the other hand, in an impermanent cosmos, the universe will eventually collapse or expand out of existence. How will your indestructible, endlessly replicable mind/body then live without a place to live in? Without energy or space?

And if we think we may be satisfied with an incredibly long lifetime, we need to remember theres an important difference between longevity and immortality.

The difference is this: No matter how long we live, no matter how long our happiness lasts, when its time for us to give up something that we want to keep, it feels too soon. We say, It feels like just yesterday when

This is the obvious truth of impermanence, why its so painful for most of us: When something disappears, its disappears so thoroughly its like it was never there.

Look at an elderly, dying patient and you literally cannot guess what they looked like when they were twenty. Fall out of love and your body and heart dont register at all anymore the nearness of someone you once felt so close to. Lose your passion for doing something and the place where you worked so hard for so long now feels foreign.

Whether you live seventy years, a hundred years or a thousand years, when your time is up, it always feels sudden. Something in your mind always goes, Thats it? Its really over?

So how then shall we conquer death?

Ive chosen to bet that some part of consciousness what Son Buddhists call the source or root of consciousness lives on. Im trying to find Awaken to exactly what part of me that is. I choose this path because a life lived in the shadow of death while nervously, self-deludedly trying to ignore the reality of death is awful.

But its also the choice where I have nothing to lose and everything to gain. In this choice, there is a possibility, however remote, of attaining some form of transcendence over death.

If Im wrong and delusional and at death my mind is completely destroyed, then who cares? Its what would have happened anyway. There will be no me" to be embarrassed or regretful that I was wrong. And it will be the end of suffering.

On the other hand, if Im correct, then I may attain peace in the face of human mortality. Indestructible, eternal peace. I mean that literally. Because Ill be enlightened to the one part of my mind or my existence or reality itself that survives and transcends physical death. And a whole new realm of existence will open up before me. That prospect is actually exciting. Thrilling even.

So I choose the seemingly unlikely possibility that the source of consciousness survives over the 100% certainty that, even if I could freeze my body or upload my mind into a new body or computer, the vehicle of my mind will be destroyed. And I certainly choose it over a desperate and hopeless reliance on diet fads, low-body-fat-at-all-costs workout regimens, botox, and clothes that make me look skinny.

Its a truism among hospice caregivers that people die in the same way that they lived. If we spend our lives in relentless, pathological denial of death, theres no way to measure the helplessness, frustration, and terror we feel on the day that were given a terminal diagnosis. All of the fear and uncertainty that we suppressed come roaring back after us with a vengeance.

But if, while we live, we are able to Awaken to some other timeless dimension of life within ourselves somewhere, well, Id prefer to be illuminated like that when my body finally gives out and theres nothing more I can do but just take it.

It seems like a better way to die.

Alien: Isolation Returns To VR With Unofficial Rift And Vive Mod – UploadVR

In a way, Alien: Isolation was one of the first games to support VR. All the way back in 2014, two years before the consumer Oculus Rift would release, Oculus headed to E3 with a playable demo of the game for its shiny DK2 headset along with other games like Luckys Tale.

The demo was a terrifying experience, taking a slice of the first-person horror game that aimed to capture the dim atmosphere and chilling scares of the first Alien movie. Sadly, full support never made its way into the game and developer Creative Assembly has since moved onto new projects. Around release, DK2 owners were able to get the game running on their headsets with makeshift support, but it was impossible to do the same on the consumer VR headsets released last year. That is until now.

A team of modders has just released an alpha version of MotherVR, which allows the entire game to play played using either an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. Simply download this patch, copy the DLL file from the archive into the game folder and youll be ready to go (provided you have bought the game itself, of course). Thats still with a gamepad, mind you; the team has done a great job converting the original game into the uncharted territory of the VR port, but it sticks with the original controls (mouse and keyboard are also compatible).

Be warned, though, this isnt a professionally-made VR port, and thus you can expect some comfort and immersion-breaking issues throughout. If walking with artificial locomotion isnt your thing then youll have to give this one a miss and, even if youre not, forced camera turns and other issues might get your stomach rolling a little. If youre up to it, though, theres a lengthy and worthwhile campaign to see through, and staring down the iconic Xenomorph in VR is truly a frightening ordeal. You can even play the DLC expansion that released later on, retelling the events of the original movie.

This is probably as close as youll ever get to playing the full game in VR, so show the team some support if you can.

Social Media Marketing: Incredibly Dynamic Field – 38632 Unofficial

Social media marketing or SMM, as it is commonly referred to, is a powerful way to conveniently create new leads and powerfully enhance your overall ROI. However, it could be quite difficult to wrap your head around a comprehensive strategy, mainly because there is seemingly a tremendous amount of them.

Being able to see through what works and what not isnt something that you ought to be capable of. The truth is that in this field, its a lot of trying and a lot mistakes until you find the right path. This is what you need to consider. With this in mind, below you will find a few things to take into account when it comes to SMM.

Do Not Ignore Snapchat

Snapchat is a tremendous, 100-million user infinity pool of potential customers. Over 10 billion snaps are send every single day. This is something that you are obligated to capitalize on if you want to actively reach out to your customer base. By establishing your personalized Snap stories as well as convenient geo filters, you will be more capable of tapping into this tremendously infinite audience.

A comprehensive Geo filter is going to cost you as little as $5. This is a perfectly engaging and interactive tool to reach out to your audience and it is relatively cheap.

Snap stories, on the other hand, would allow you to show photos as well as videos who are following you on your social platform. Its as easy as that.

Targeted Audiences on Facebook

We truly wanted to save the best for last but it cant really wait. Facebook, for obvious reasons, is your go-to social media marketing platform. With billions of active users and a tremendously long average time spent on a per-day basis, its no wonder that this is the platform that the majority of people are actively willing to advertise on. Every corporation is present on Facebook and thats for a good reason.

Now, Facebook has introduced the so called Ad Manager tool which is going to be particularly helpful, provided you take proper advantage of it. It is going to enable you to create specifically targeted audiences based on criteria that you input. This is the beauty of it as it would allow you to easily navigate your campaign as well as to control its budget.

Furthermore, there is the Facebooks Life Events feature which is going to enable you to let people know about a significant change in your life by adding it conveniently to your timeline. So, for instance, if you want to capitalize on your current business, putting a status about it is a good idea. You can do so when you reach corporate milestones, release new product lines and others of the kind.

What is more, you can also target different people based on a variety of interesting factors, including recent behavior, relationship status, education level, interests, estimated income and a whole lot more. If you use these types of filters, youd be able to comprehensively narrow down your overall audience to those who are actually interested in what you have to offer. Not only will this increase your overall ROI but it would proactively reduce the costs associated with your Facebook advertising.

Using Customized Hashtags

The intended use of hashtags is to enable people to find content based on different sets of categories. However, customized hashtags could be a very powerful way to get people interested in what you have to offer. What is more, it could be a trendy way of encouraging them to actively share your content. The best thing is that you can easily use the same hashtag throughout a range of different social media platforms.

Let us give you a quick example. Back in 2015, Marvel created an interesting, Halloween-themed hashtag called #MarvelHalloween. Hundreds of people started using this hashtag during Halloween alongside their own pictures in costumes of Marvel heroes. Not only is this a tremendous amount of absolutely free and high-value advertising for Marvel, but its also a particularly effective way to foster serious consumer engagement.

Google Posts

Even though this is something that we waited for quite a lot of time, Google Posts is already available for smaller companies. Their content is going to appear on the maps results and in the Google Search. This is actually huge when it comes to it.

Small businesses that use the GMB platform (Google My Business) would benefit significantly. You would be given the chance to write a text, add an event title or upload an image when you write your post. This is something quite interactive.

Now, its obvious that social media marketing in all of its beauty can foster serious results. However, most of them would require serious investment until they can reach the point of automation and organic growth without any further cash flow.

This is something that not all small business owners can afford. There is a cost-effective yet lengthier process which would enable you to achieve serious organic outreach and engage people who are actively looking for you and what you have to offer. Comprehensive SEO is by far the most effective manner of increasing your traffic and customer base without constantly funneling money towards it. Sure, there is a serious investment at first but once you get the results, all you have to do is sustain them and this is far cheaper than active SMM. Of course, the latter should be carried out systematically and in parallel and it could seriously complement your overall results. However, prioritizing the most effective option should be your go-to choice.

Relying on a professional is completely out of the question as there is no other way to achieve anything. DIY try-hard attempts are ineffective or they will take a tremendous amount of time, wasted resources and effort that you could have spent better on something else keep this in mind.

Urbanites flock to outdoor yoga to release stress – Japan Today

Practicing yoga in parks, stadiums and other outdoor facilities is a popular way to release stress in Tokyo and other major Japanese cities.

One Friday evening at Tokyo's Jingu Stadium, some 1,000 people took part in a session of "night yoga," an event held a few times a month.

"Control your breathing, release the tension in your mind and body," instructor Arisa Takada, 24, said through a microphone to participants gathering in the home field of the Yakult Swallows professional baseball team.

Guided by her voice, and while listening to therapeutic music, people filling the outfield area moved like waves in the stadium lights.

The program, sponsored by companies, is free of charge and requires no reservation or yoga experience. Some participants were in yoga gear and some others were in T-shirts and short pants.

The most relaxing moment seemed to come when they lay flat on their back on the lawn in a pose called Shavasana, looking up at the night sky while the lights and the music went out.

"It was great. I felt like I connected to the universe," said a woman in her 30s after joining the event with her colleague.

The atmosphere of the stadium creates a "hideaway from the city because the stands seal you from the outside," instructor Takada said. "You have a feeling of unity with others."

"Jingu Stadium Night Yoga" has been organized by a sporting event management company since last year to help promote the local area.

Some local businesspeople have worried about a stagnant feeling in the area since the National Stadium, the main venue for the 1964 Olympics, was demolished in 2015 to build a new facility for the 2020 Olympics.

The organizers plan to hold 10 yoga sessions between May and September, inviting instructors including Ken Harakuma, a well-known yoga practitioner.

The event has been popular from the beginning with the number of participants at a single session peaking at some 1,300.

The participants are mostly women in their 30s to 50s who join after work, but there are also men and older people.

A photo session to help them upload their photos of the event on social media is also popular, organizers say.

There are a number of other outdoor yoga events.

The PARK YOGA website posts such events held in places such as Shinjuku Gyoen park in Tokyo, Yamashita Park in Yokohama, Nakanoshima Park in Osaka and Ohori Park in Fukuoka.

Unlike Roomba, Apple confirms it won’t upload, share or sell your home data from HomePod – AppleInsider (press release) (blog)

By Mike Wuerthele Thursday, July 27, 2017, 07:04 am PT (10:04 am ET)

Following iRobot's CEO declaring that he was looking to sell collated data from the automatic robot vacuum Roomba, a user reached out to Apple to see what it had in mind on the same topic. The user was concerned because Apple advertises it will use room-mapping technology to automatically tailor the HomePod's audio to fit the space.

In an email response to the reader, Apple declared that:

Reaching out to Apple for more data regarding the statement and to confirm its authenticity, AppleInsider was told that there was "nothing at all new here" and there is no change to the company's privacy page for Siri and hardware. The privacy page states clearly that it does not collect and sell user data gleaned by Siri or other services.

While Apple's privacy policy on Siri is not new, the room sensing technology set to be introduced in the HomePod itself is. Confirmation that Apple has no intention to upload or share the data should help put privacy advocates at ease.

Apple's HomePod uses the microphones to listen not only to the user, but to the audio being played in real-time. The A8 analyzes not only the sound of the audio in the room, but "time in flight," telling the device where each wall or sound-reflecting object is in the room, and adjusts the output accordingly based on this data.

While not quite the same as how a Roomba can map a user's floors and furniture, it's still some general idea of how a person's home is laid out, or how large it is.

Unlike Apple, which plans to keep any home data stored on the device itself, Roomba collects and stores information on a user's home not only to improve its products, but also with the possibility that it could share and sell it in the future.

Roomba builder iRobot believes that the data could be of interest to Apple, Amazon, and Google to improve the data sets utilized in home automation software and services, or to suggest a new product to fill a service gap. To boost its bottom line, iRobot has started looking for customers willing to pay for that data.

As detailed this week, the 900-series Roomba automated vacuums measure the dimensions of a room, as well as furniture orientation, size of the devices, and where they are located in the room. This is accomplished by simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology.

Apple's $349 HomePod was revealed at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference and will ship in December. The speaker is powered by an Apple A8 chip featuring realtime acoustic modeling, audio beam-forming, and multi-channel echo cancelation. It features a subset of Siri, optimized for music consumption.

Whole Foods seeks art for limited-edition grocery bag – The Park Record

Whole Foods Market Park City wants to know how local artists view the old mining town.

The grocery store, which will open a new market this fall at 6598 N. Landmark Drive near the Tanger Outlets, is asking local artists to submit artwork to be featured on an exclusive, limited-edition shopping bag to celebrate the event, said Debbie LaBelle, Whole Foods metro marketing and community relations for Utah.

"We're excited to reach out to and partner with our talented pool of artists in Park City to hopefully capture the feel of the town that will be featured on our exclusive shopping bags," LaBelle said. "Whole foods will print a limited quantity of these canvas bags as part of its store opening activities and for a period of time thereafter."

The theme is Park City, and the deadline for submissions is Friday, Aug. 11. Digital artwork should be uploaded to the following site:parkcityphotographer.smugmug.com/upload/f6VtWz/WFPC.

The password is: WFPC.

"Whole Foods Market team members will select the design," LaBelle said. "The winner will be unveiled during our store opening activities during the fall. When we're 60 days out, we will announce the official opening date."

There are guidelines.

"We just wanted to make sure that the artists have some sort of framework to work with," LaBelle said. "We're really looking for an artistic representation that depicts their vision of Park City."

The bag size will be 12 inches by 12 inches.

"Images can include a drawing of Main Street, the [McPolin] Barn, a moose, the new Whole Foods store, or anything else that represents Park City to you," LaBelle said.

Art created with oil, watercolor, pen and ink will be accepted.

"The only thing we're not looking for is a full-on photograph," LaBelle said. "However, artists can manipulate an image so that it doesn't look like a photo.

"One thing I would like to say is that the artists will not lose the rights to their work."

LaBelle added that seeds for the contest were planted a few weeks ago.

"Whole Foods has a partnership with the Park City Professional Artist Association, and while I was brainstorming with [photographer] Deb DeKoff, we both cooked up the idea that it would be fantastic to celebrate local artists with a shopping bag design," LaBelle said. "The winning artist will receive a $250 Whole Foods Market gift card, along with bragging rights as the creator of the Whole Foods Park City bag."

Whole Foods is also hoping to locally produce and print the bags.

"This is a really fun project, and I hope we get a good number of people who want to participate," LaBelle said. "I want to encourage people to apply and submit their art. I can't wait to see the art that will be submitted."

Deadline for artist submissions for the Whole Foods limited edition grocery bag is Friday, Aug. 11. Digital artwork should be uploaded to the following site:parkcityphotographer.smugmug.com/upload/f6VtWz/WFPC.

Here’s why today is a very sad day for music fans – JOE

The day that music died.

Some people will think of the gramophone or vinyl as the first real music player while others will suggest that tapes or CD walkmans revolutionised the music industry.

However, if you were heavily into music in the mid-noughties, an iPod was a must. You didn't have to carry around a selection of discs on your travels and there was no hassle of scratching and damaging a CD while changing them in the walkman.

The thought of being able to upload something on to this small device and that it would hold numerous CDs worth of songs was baffling but we did not question it, we just let it be.

Bono was the poster boy for the brand new music device and up until lately, his silhouette was still being used on the artist symbol in all of Apple's music products.

The first time this JOE writer ever came across the iPod was circa 2004/'05.

Vertigo had just been released by U2 and the rip-roaring chorus of "Hello, Hello... Ola" followed by the constant ending of 'Yeahs' was danced to by the band and a girl both of which had this little music player in their hand with the earphones plugged in.

Clip viaabsolutCommunication

Everyone at school wanted an iPod, even if you only had one CD. It was the cool new accessory to have but nobody could have foreseen the massive impact it would have on the music industry.

Well, 16 years since it was first launched on the market, Apple has decided to finally pull the plug on its iPod Nano and Shuffle products.

The iPod touch is still alive in some form. Apple offers a Touch with 32GB of storage, it's not a real iPod but instead, an iPhone-lite.

Therefore, 28 July marks the end of Apple's era of standalone music players.

You may be reading this article on your smartphone and wondering to yourself 'why should I care about this, can't I get all my music on this thing anyway?' and you'd be completely right to think that.

Cast your mind back though and remember just how happy you were when you tore that iPod box apart on Christmas Day, your birthday or maybe it just even a normal day.

Remember how exciting it was to upload all your music on to it for the first time? The sound was so good and loud that even the oldest of songs seemed fresh.

Like a passport or a phone, your iPod might be sitting idle in a drawer somewhere at this moment in time.

If you do know of its whereabouts, take it out and give it a blast today, for old times sake.

Admission list blooper leaves Jadavpur University vulnerable to legal action – Times of India

KOLKATA: An indigenous software programme used for the first time to collate data and publish the merit list for admission to ME/MTech and interdisciplinary courses at Jadavpur University has played foul, putting the university in the dock. This is the first major goof-up in the recent past, raising hackles among the university teachers who fear the lapse makes JU prone to challenge in court.

According to JU sources, the software was used without a trial run, keeping the dean of engineering and the vice-chancellor in the dark. Even as the university has withdrawn the merit lists, many among the 2000-odd candidates have taken snapshots of both the lists.

JU VC Suranjan Das couldn't deny the lapse that gives students in the first list an option to move court even if the university makes amends in the merit lists. The VC gave a piece of his mind to members, mostly contractual teachers handling the admission process. Das has also ordered an inquiry into the lapse. The admission committee will upload the revised merit list after its meeting on August 2.
