Salmonella: A Practical Approach To The Organism And Its Control In Foods - , Alec Kyriakides
ll4.me Salmonella: A Practical Approach To The Organism And Its Control In Foods - , Alec Kyriakides Human illness attributed to foodborne pathogenic microorganisms has been prominent in the mass media in recent years. The Practical Food Microbiology Series has been devised to give practical and accurate information about specific organisms of concern to public health. The information is designed for use by those in the food industry working in manufacturing, retailing and quality assurance, those in associated professional sectors eg public health, and students in each of these areas. The series is unique in its practical approach as it draws on real life situations to highlight practical means for controlling the organism in foods.Salmonella species are arguably the most commonly reported food associated human pathogens in the developed world. They are zoonotic agents and many different animal reservoirs are known. They can be found widely in the environment and may also establish in food processing environments. Over 2000 serotypes of Salmonella have been identified to-date, some of which cause very serious illness in humans particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly. Although rare, illness may result in fatality or long term debility and sequelae. Salmonella spp. are so widespread in raw foods and food source environments that the food industry has to maintain constant vigilance regarding contamination in raw materials, effectiveness of food processing ...From:aliciahorne985Views:0 0ratingsTime:00:12More inPeople Blogs

E. coli: Research

E. coli: Research Prevention
Escherichia coli or E. coli is a common bacterium. Most strains are harmless, but some strains, can cause serious - sometimes life threatening - food poisoning in humans, and are occasionally responsible for product recalls. Dr. James Kaper, professor and chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is researching one of the most dangerous E. Coli strains: O157:H7, which has been tied to a number of deadly outbreaks. Researchers are studying how the bacterium colonizes and investigating possible vaccines. Consumers should be careful to thoroughly cook meat and avoid cross contamination of uncooked foods to avoid E. coli contamination. http://www.medschool.umaryland.eduFrom:schoolofmedicineViews:8 0ratingsTime:03:27More inEducation

My Microbial Self

My Microbial Self I: Guus Roeselers at TEDxDelft
As a child Guus Roeselers developed a great passion for the living world, and as a true naturalist he had the urge to investigate everything. But it was during his biology studies at Utrecht University that he became smitten by the mostly invisible nature: microbiology. He received his PhD in Environmental Biotechnology in 2007 under Professor Mark Van Loosdrecht at TU Delft, the Dutch cradle of microbiology. Subsequently, he received a grant from Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and moved to the US, where he joined the lab of Professor Colleen Cavanaugh at Harvard University. Here he spend several years conducting research on various topics including symbioses between gutless marine invertebrates and sulfur oxidizing bacteria. Since October 2010 he has been working as a scientist in the Microbiology and System Biology department of TNO in Zeist. Roeselers is involved in many projects for industry in which microorganisms play a role. Currently, his research is focused on the microbial ecosystems inside human and animal intestines. In June 2012 he was awarded the title Young Professional of the Year by the young professional network association ICA. According to the jury Roeselers has a "...clear vision to use innovation in solving the ecological challenges of a growing world population with an increasing burden on natural resources...". In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together ...From:TEDxTalksViews:23 2ratingsTime:13:45More inEntertainment
