Former exec at TikTok parent firm sues, citing ‘lawlessness’ – Macau Business

A former US-based executive of ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, has sued it for wrongful dismissal, saying he was fired for sounding the alarm over what he called its culture of lawlessness.

The suit, filed by Yintao Yu in a San Francisco court, comes as political pressure has been growing in the US to ban TikTok. Critics say the popular platform allows Beijing to covertly collect users data and influence their opinions something the company denies.

In his suit, Yu says that he discovered shortly after being hired in 2017 that ByteDance was stealing videos published on rival sites like Instagram and Snapchat and presenting them as its own.

Yu, who was ByteDances US head of engineering, says he notified company leaders about the problem, but the intellectual property infringement continued unabated.

He was fired in November 2018.

On Friday, Yu submitted an amendment to his original complaint which was filed May 1 accusing ByteDance of serving as a useful propaganda tool for the Chinese Communist Party.

He said he had seen ByteDance give prominence to content expressing hatred for Japan, while playing down posts supporting pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong.

Yu said that Chinese government officials had a unit in the US office which maintained supreme access to all the company data, even data stored in the United States.

My client is the most senior executive at ByteDance to come forward publicly, Yus lawyer, Charles Jung, told AFP on Saturday.

He added: My client is concerned about protecting American user data, about the ethical operations of the app and the well-being of ByteDances employees.

The issue of access to personal data on American users has aroused growing concern among US authorities. In response, the company says it stores that data only on US-based servers.

At a congressional hearing in Washington in late March, TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew again reassured legislators that Beijing had no access to the US data. But several lawmakers expressed disbelief.

The White House recently threatened to ban TikTok in the US unless ByteDance sold it to an American company.

Yu asked the San Francisco court to issue an injunction forcing ByteDance to halt the practices listed in the complaint, and to pay him damages and interest, of which he promised to share a substantial part with Asian-American rights groups in the US.

ByteDance and TikTok did not immediately respond on Saturday to an AFP request for comment.

OPINION – A sudden twist in Sino-Canadian relations – Macau Business

A recent saga involving Michael Chong, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Progressive Conservative Party in Canada, led to a sudden deterioration of Sino-Canadian relations in that Canada expelled a Chinese diplomat while China responded in a tit-for-tat pway by expelling a Canadian diplomat in Shanghai.

The incident erupted suddenly when CanadasGlobe and Mailclaimed that the government of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) was targeting an MP, Michael Chong, who criticized Chinas policy toward Xinjiang and who voted in February 2021 for a motion condemning the PRC.

The newspaper cited an unnamed security source that Zhao Wei, a Chinese diplomat in Canada, attempted to target at Chong and to intimidate his family in Hong Kong a serious accusation that aroused great concern in the domestic politics of Canada.

Then the federal government of Canada expelled Zhao Wei from Canada. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said that Canada will not tolerate any form of foreign interference in our internal affairs.

The Canadian government declared Zhao Wei persona non grata after days of pressure from Canadas opposition parties and media criticisms. Clearly, the move was a political one, with the ruling Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Justine Trudeau taking a necessary step to placate its political opponents at a time when the Progressive Conservative Party has been launching a campaign to attack the Liberal Party.

In a tit-for-tat move, China expelled Canadas consult in Shanghai, namely Jennifer Lynn Lalonde.

Some media commentators in Canada and some Hong Kong diaspora commentators have seen the whole incident as not only a deterioration in Sino-Canadian relations but also a prelude to a trade war between the two countries in the months to come.

According to the latest news from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the Canadian security service has begun to reach out to more elected politicians in Canada to brief them on foreign interference. For instance, former Conservative leader Erin OToole and New Democratic Party MP Jenny Kwan were contacted for such briefings. OTooles sister had lived in Hong Kong for many years before she returned to Canada in 2021, while Jenny Kwan said she does not have any family member in mainland China or Hong Kong.

Michael Chong has been a MP from the riding of Wellington-Halton for 19 years. In 2006, he quitted his position as a minister in intergovernmental affairs over a motion which recognized Quebecois as a nation inside Canada, because he said that he did not believe in ethnic nationalism. Chong stressed that he believed in civic nationalism.

Chong said that the governments intelligence report about him was circulated among government departments, although Prime Minister Trudeau and his ministers said that the report was not presented to them.

However, the entire saga raised some questions. First, it is unclear why the intelligence report was not presented to Trudeau, who appeared to be a target of political criticisms by his opposition parties and media. Second, it is unclear how Chinese officials might have targeted the Canadian MPs and their families. Third, if PRCs interference with Canadian politics existed, it is unclear what forms it might take and whether such interference was stopped by the authorities concerned.

The Michael Chong incidence came at a time when Sino-Canadian relations had already suffered from the cases of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig. In December 2018, Canadian citizens Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were detained in China shortly after the arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Sabrina Meng Wanzhou in Canada. While Kovrig worked for an international crisis groups office in Hong Kong, Spavor was a director of Paektu Cultural Exchange, an organization that dealt with tourism and investment in North Korea.

In September 2021, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the two Michaels had been released from detention shortly after Meng was released from house arrest in Canada.

The detention and release of the two Michaels were clearly related to the fate of Sabrina Meng in Canada a case showing that the incidence of the two Michaels was tied to the international politics and Sino-US-Canadian relations surrounding Meng.

From late 2022 to early 2023, there were media reports in Canada making accusations on the establishment of so-called Chinese police stations in Toronto, Vancouver and Quebec. The media asserted that these service stations aimed at Chinese diaspora communities and individuals, some of whom might become a target of the mainland police.

In November 2022, the RCMP in Canada confirmed that they investigated such reports of service stations in Toronto.

However, the PRC embassy in Canada mentioned that the overseas service stations were opened during the Covid-19 pandemic to help Chinese nationals abroad on issues such as drivers licence renewal.

It was unclear whether such service stations were operated by local police in China without the full knowledge of the central-level police leaders in Beijing. With a country as large as the PRC, quite often the local police might have operated their activities beyond the knowledge of the central-level authorities.

There were also Canadian media reports saying that the PRC attempted to meddle in Canadas 2019 and 2021 national elections and to target at some candidates with Chinese ethnic background. Prime Minister Trudeau was under the oppositions criticism, and he decided to set up an independent special rapporteur with the task of providing the government with concrete recommendations.

In March 2023, the PRC Foreign Minister Qin Gang told the Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly during the G20 meeting that China never interferes with other countries internal politics and opposes any country interfering with other countries internal politics.

Although the PRCs official position is clear, Canadas domestic politics have recently witnessed a fierce struggle between the ruling Liberal Party and the opposition Progressive Conservative (PC) Party.

The leader of the PC Party, Pierre Poilievre, said in March that only a public inquiry would find out what happened with foreign interference. He went so far as to make the following claim on March 6, 2023: Justin Trudeau has known about this interference for a decade because it was ten years ago that the Trudeau foundation got its Canadian $200,000 donation from a Beijing-backed donor and ever since we know that the government in Beijing has been trying to influence and support Justin Trudeau. (see CNN report)

The Globe and Mailreported that a foundation was named after Justin Trudeaus father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, had received Canadian $200,000 donation from two Chinese businesspeople in 2016 to support and fund scholarships and leadership programs.

However, a spokesman for Justin Trudeaus office said that he withdrew his involvement from the named foundation when he participated in federal politics about a decade ago. At the same time, the Pierre Elliot Trudeau Foundation said that, considering the media report and accusation, it would refund the donation and maintain its role as an independent and non-partisan charity.

Objectively speaking, with the opposition party targeting at the Liberal Party and accusing Prime Minister Trudeau of being vulnerable to foreign interference, the series of events that pointed to the PRCs interference have political motivations. Specifically, the opposition is keen to oust the ruling Liberal Party in the next national elections, and its campaign strategy is to connect the Liberal Party with the PRCs interference.

In conclusion, the sudden deterioration in Sino-Canadian relations has been attributable mainly to the attempt of the opposition to discredit the Liberal Party in Canada by linking the ruling regime with the so-called PRC interference. By doing so, the opposition, including parties and mass media, appears to achieve several political objectives: digging out previous election candidates who were suspected of being influenced by external actors, warning forthcoming candidates (especially candidates with Chinese ethnic background) against the possibility of being influenced, exposing the weaknesses of the Liberal Party, and turning the Chinese interference into a factor shaping Canadian domestic politics and electoral rivalries.

Although fierce partisan politics are the hallmarks of Canadas domestic political development, the diplomats of Canada and China appear to stay relatively calm. While the expulsion of the Chinese diplomat from Canada was a natural response of the Trudeau government, the PRC expulsion of the Canadian diplomat in Shanghai was a kneejerk response. Pragmatism will likely prevail and trade war between the two countries will unlikely occur; both countries economies are recovering gradually shortly after the end of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there will not be a significant breakthrough at least from now to the next national elections, because the ruling Liberal Party does not want to risk being labelled as a regime vulnerable to foreign interference. Nor does the Liberal Party want to lose the support of voters. As such, Sino-Canadian relations remain pragmatic amid the suddenly rocky relationship due to the fierce opposition politics aimed at discrediting and toppling the Liberal Party in Canada.

Kenya starvation cult death toll exceeds 200 – Macau Business

The death toll in an investigation linked to a Kenyan cult that practised starvation has climbed to 201, as search teams on Saturday unearthed 22 more bodies from a coastal forest, a government official said.

Police believe most of the bodies found in a forest near the Indian Ocean town of Malindi belong to followers of Paul Nthenge Mackenzie, a taxi driver-turned-preacher who is accused of inciting them to starve to death to meet Jesus.

Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha, who announced the latest figures, said 26 people have been arrested over the deaths, including Mackenzie and an enforcer gang tasked with ensuring that no one broke their fast or left the forest hideout alive.

She said investigators would halt exhumations for two days to reorganise their efforts, with the process to resume on Tuesday.

Mackenzie has not yet been required to enter a plea but a court on Wednesday ordered him to be detained for three more weeks pending further investigations over what has been dubbed the Shakahola Forest Massacre.

The 50-year-old founder of the Good News International Church turned himself in on April 14 after police acting on a tip-off first entered Shakahola forest.

While starvation appears to be the main cause of death, some of the victims including children were strangled, beaten or suffocated, according to chief government pathologist Johansen Oduor.

Court documents filed on Monday said some of the corpses had their organs removed, with police alleging the suspects were engaged in forced harvesting of body parts.

But Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki urged caution, telling reporters on Tuesday that it is a theory we are investigating.

Onyancha said that over 600 people have been reported missing, including from villages around the forest.

Questions have been raised about how Mackenzie, a father of seven, managed to evade law enforcement despite a history of extremism and previous legal cases.

The horrific saga has stunned Kenyans and led President William Ruto to set up a commission of inquiry into the deaths and a task force to review regulations governing religious bodies.

Another pastor accused of links to Mackenzie and to the bodies found in the forest was released on bail at a court hearing last week.

Ezekiel Odero, a high-profile and wealthy televangelist, is being investigated on a raft of charges including murder, aiding suicide, abduction, radicalisation, crimes against humanity, child cruelty, fraud and money laundering.

Prosecutors say they have credible information linking the corpses exhumed at Shakahola to the deaths of several innocent and vulnerable followers from Oderos New Life Prayer Centre and Church.

Odero has told the court that he wanted to strongly disassociate himself from Mackenzie and disagreed with his teachings.

Efforts to regulate religion in the majority-Christian country have been fiercely opposed in the past as attempts to undermine constitutional guarantees for the division of church and state.

At least one Russia aircraft crashes near Ukraine border – Macau Business

At least one helicopter crashed on Saturday in a southern Russian region bordering Ukraine, local authorities said, with one official saying Moscow has lost four aircraft.

In a terse statement on messaging app Telegram, Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region in southern Russia, said a helicopter crashed in the town of Klintsy.

He did not say what happened to the crew but added that a woman suffered injuries and was hospitalised.

Five houses have been damaged, he said, without elaborating on the reason behind the crash.

But in a conflicting statement, Vladimir Rogov, a Moscow-installed official in the Russian-controlled part of Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, said thatfour Russian aircraft had been shot out of the sky: two MI-8 helicopters, an SU-35 fighter jet and an SU-34 fighter bomber.

He said that the crew of the helicopters and the SU-34 had died.

He did not provide further details.

Footage of several Russian aircraft crashing in the region of Bryansk has been circulating on Russian social media. One video shows a helicopter apparently being hit and catching fire.

There was no immediate comment from the Russian defence ministry.

Russians are very upset today, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said on social media.

We can understand them: minus two fighter jets and minus two helicopters.

Western allies have delivered increasingly powerful weapons to Ukraine, and Britain this week announced it would send Storm Shadow missiles, becoming the first country to send longer-range arms to Kyiv.

Thailand votes, but will the military listen? – Macau Business

Thailand votes Sunday in an election that could see pro-democracy opposition parties oust the conservative military-backed government of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha after almost a decade in power.

Voters are tipped to deliver a resounding defeat to ex-army chief and coup leader Prayut after a campaign that played out as a clash between a young generation yearning for change and the traditionalist, royalist establishment.

The main opposition Pheu Thai party, fronted by the daughter of billionaire former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, was ahead in final opinion polls.

But in a kingdom where victory at the ballot box has often been trumped by coups and court orders, there are fears the military could seek to cling on, raising the prospect of fresh instability.

At Pheu Thais closing rally on Friday, main candidate Paetongtarn Shinawatra told a rapturous 10,000-strong crowd that Sunday would be a historic day where Thailand will change from junta rule to democratic rule.

A turnout of 90 percent in last Sundays early round of voting points to an electorate looking for change, but the opposition faces an uphill battle to secure power, thanks to the junta-scripted 2017 constitution.

The new premier will be chosen jointly by the 500 elected MPs and 250 senate members appointed by Prayuts junta stacking the deck in the armys favour.

In the controversial last election in 2019, Prayut rode senate support to become prime minister at the head of a complex multi-party coalition.

Some 95,000 polling stations scattered from the lush-forested mountains of the north to the idyllic sands of the southern beaches will open at 8:00 am (0100 GMT) on Sunday.

The election is the first since major youth-led pro-democracy protests erupted across Bangkok in 2020 with demands to curb the power and spending of Thailands king breaching a long-held taboo on questioning the monarchy.

The demonstrations petered out as Covid-19 curbs were imposed and dozens of leaders were arrested, but their energy has fuelled growing support for the more radical opposition Move Forward Party (MFP).

MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat, 42, toured Bangkok streets in an open-top jeep Saturday, urging voters to give the younger generation the opportunity to govern.

While MFP is looking for support from millennial and Gen Z voters who make up nearly half the 52 million-strong electorate Pheu Thais base is in the rural northeast where voters are still grateful for the welfare policies implemented by Thaksin in the early 2000s.

Prayut, meanwhile, has made an unashamedly nationalist pitch to older voters, painting himself as the only candidate capable of saving Thailand from chaos and ruin.

But he has lagged badly in the polls, blamed for a sputtering economy and feeble recovery from the pandemic, which battered the kingdoms crucial tourism industry.

Rights groupsaccuse him of overseeing a major crackdown on basic freedoms, with a huge spike in prosecutions under Thailands draconian royal defamation laws.

The country has seen a dozen coups in the last century and has been locked over the last two decades in a rolling cycle of street protests, coups and court orders dissolving political parties.

The Shinawatra familys bitter tussle with the royalist-military establishment has been at the heart of the drama, with Thaksin ousted in a 2006 putsch and his sister Yingluck unseated by Prayut in 2014.

An unclear or disputed result this time could lead to a fresh round of demonstrations and instability.

Adding to the uncertainty, rumours are already swirling that MFP could be dissolved by court order the same fate that befell its predecessor Future Forward Party after it performed unexpectedly well at the 2019 poll.

EU and UN agree to support Gambia’s transitional justice process – Macau Business

The European Union has committed nine million euros to support The Gambias transitional justice process, in a new partnership with the UN and national government, the presidency announced at a conference Friday.

The government last year committed to implementing recommendations made by a truth commission, known as the TRRC, which probed alleged crimes committed by the state under ex-dictator Yahya Jammehs 22-year rule.

But it has said it lacks the financial resources to do so.

A spokeswoman for the presidency on Friday announced the funding commitment at a conference for stakeholders and donors.

The partnership was unveiled by President Adama Barrow, the head of the EUs delegation to The Gambia, Corrado Pampaloni, and representatives of the UN Development Programme (UNDP).

The Government understands the importance of holding accountable all those responsible for human rights violations, as well as providing reparations and support to the victims, President Barrow said in a speech.

We will strive tirelessly to make sure that justice is served and that the rights and dignity of the victims are upheld.

He said a partnership platform had been established to streamline donor support and avoid duplication of efforts.

The UNDP will provide technical support.

Jammeh held sway over the small West African state for more than two decades until he was unexpectedlydefeated in presidential elections in December 2016 by political newcomer Barrow, who was re-elected in 2021.

The TRRC found evidence of widespread extrajudicial killings, torture, enforced disappearances, witch hunts and other human rights abuses during his regime.

Jammeh was forced into exile in early 2017 after his shock electoral defeat and a six-week crisis that led to military intervention by other West African states.

Barrows government last year accepted recommendations to prosecute Jammeh himself for a swathe of crimes, from raping a beauty queen to using death squads.

Jammeh remains in exile in Equatorial Guinea, which has no extradition treaty with The Gambia.

Ukraine says ‘moving forward’ along parts of Bakhmut front – Macau Business

A senior Ukrainian military commander said Saturday that Kyivs forces were advancing along parts of the front line against Russian forces near the eastern town of Bakhmut.

Our soldiers are moving forward in some areas of the front, and the enemy is losing equipment and manpower, Commander of Ukrainian ground forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said on social media.

The defensive operation in the Bakhmut direction continues.

Earlier Saturday the Germany defence ministry said the country was preparing a new weapons package for Ukraine worth 2.7 billion euros, reportedly Berlins largest since Russia invaded last year.

Kyiv said that the massive new weapons package from Germany was another sign that Russia would lose in its war against Ukraine.

States declare large defence aid packages for Ukraine, said Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He said that the aid indicated that Russia was bound to lose and sit on the bench of historical shame.

Ukraines Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that he discussed next weapons supplies with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

I paid close attention to the importance of providing Ukraine with F-16s and steps necessary to begin training of Ukrainian pilots, he added.

‘Nothing left’ as looting guts Sudan’s already crippled economy – Macau Business

A month ago, Mohsen Abdelrahman owned a small but profitable jewellery store in Khartoum. Now, he has nothing to his name but a broken lock and a hollowed-out shopfront.

Ten days after battles broke out between two rival Sudanese generals, he received a call from the shopkeeper next door to his business saying it had been looted.

Despite the danger, Abdelrahman braved the relentless gunfire and air strikes ravaging the capital to get to his store on the other side of town, only to have his worst fears confirmed.

Everything I owned was gone, he told AFP, adding that now he just wants this war to end, so I can start over.

There is no end in sight to the conflict pitting the forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against those of his deputy-turned-foe Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

But even before the fighting broke out, Sudan was one of the worlds poorest countries, brought to its knees by decades of international sanctions under former dictator Omar al-Bashir, as well as rampant corruption and the 2011 independence of South Sudan which held almost all the countrys oil.

After a brief respite following Bashirs ouster, a 2021 coup led by Burhan and Daglo saw the international community cut $2 billion of annual aid to the country, slashing 40 percent of its budget.

The economy has been in free fall since, with the government never announcing a 2023 budget but instead boasting that dizzying inflation had recently fallen under 100 percent.

Prior to the ongoing conflict, Khartoum saw signs of economic renewal, with international restaurants and supermarkets stocked with organic food and American goods although much of it was smuggled through the Sahel.

But nowadays Khartoum, which is home to five million people, is a city whose shattered windows, gutted shopfronts, pockmarked cars and empty shelves bear witness to the rampant violence and looting.

Khartoum airport, now a shell of its former self, has been shut down since the fighting began on April 15.

Sudan once depended on vital trade coming through Port Sudan on the Red Sea, where now only planes and ships full of fleeing civilians take off, and crucial humanitarian aid trickles in.

Nothing has been spared from the looting, including hospitals, humanitarian organisations, and the abandoned houses of more than 500,000 people who fled the capital for neighbouring towns, or other countries.

Noureddine Adams mobile phone store was no exception. On the fifth day of the conflict, a lock was broken and his shop was ransacked.

They didnt leave anything, and now I have nothing left, he told AFP.

In addition to having lost their inventory, shop owners and traders like Adam are now saddled with debt, he said.

According to a customs official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, the Soba container terminal south of Khartoum where imports are processed before coming into the capital and other areas has been stripped bare.

It was all products from abroad that had come in and were waiting to be processed, but their importers couldnt come and finish the paperwork because of the war, he said.

According to witnesses in Khartoum North, wheat silos at Sayga, Sudans largest producer of flour, have been emptied out a potential disaster for a country where the UN predicts 19 million people could be food insecure within six months.

Khartoum residents have tried to hold out hope, even while sheltering under air strikes and seeing their fleeing neighbours homes broken into and ransacked.

But Abdeldayem Omar knows his clothing store is gone for good.

On the third day of the war, a rocket fell on the market, he told AFP.

Some stalls burned to the ground, including mine. Others partially survived the flames, but whatever was left was looted.

The irony, according to him, is that the main police station in the district is headquartered inside the market itself.

But the police have completely disappeared, and theres no protection left.

Sudanese fleeing war find their homes occupied by fighters – Macau Business

Like many Sudanese forced to flee their homes amid raging street battles, Mohamed said that when he finally returned to his flat, he found heavily armed paramilitaries had moved in.

After cautiously approaching his Khartoum apartment block, he discovered that the entire building had become like a military barracks filled with weapons and ammunition.

Almost a month of heavy fighting has turned Khartoum into a war zone, with the citys five million residents enduring artillery barrages, gunfights, air strikes and anti-aircraft fire.

Many have hunkered down at home amid power outages and a lack of clean water, food and medicines but many have also been forcefully evicted.

The northern suburb where Mohamed lived has become a major battleground in the war between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

After Mohameds family had spent terrifying days at home, waking and sleeping to deafening explosions and gunfire outside, RSF fighters came to evict them.

They knocked on the door and asked us to leave, said the 54-year-old, who like others interviewed by AFP for this article asked not to be identified by his full name citing security fears.

Before leaving home, Mohameds family took what they could carry and locked their doors, he added.

When he returned days later to collect some belongings, Mohamed was interrogated by the RSF paramilitaries whom he had found sitting inside his apartment.

Witnesses in Khartoum say RSF fighters have often taken up positions in leafy residential streets, with soldiers hiding camouflaged trucks under trees.

Men in military fatigues patrol in pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns.

Another man, Babiker, 44, said he fled his home in central Khartoum amid incessant gunfire, only to return two weeks later to find it occupied by the RSF.

I found more than 20 paramilitaries living there,he said, adding he was interrogated for half an hour before being allowed entry.

They were using all appliances and cooking in our kitchen, he said. All the bedrooms that we had locked before leaving were open.

Sudans bitter fighting has so far killed at least 750 people, wounded thousands and uprooted hundreds of thousands, with many refugees fleeing the country.

The UNs human rights commissioner, Volker Turk, said the RSF had allegedly taking possession of many buildings in Khartoum to use as operational bases, evicting residents and launching attacks from densely populated urban areas.

He also criticised Sudans military for launching attacks in densely occupied civilian areas, including air strikes that have killed residents.

The paramilitaries have also turned many hospitals and medical facilities into barracks a practice the UN World Health Organization has condemned as a gross violation.

Even diplomatic missions in Khartoum have not been spared.

On May 3, Saudi Arabia said an armed group had stormed its cultural office and damaged appliances, cameras, and seized some property.

The European Union said on April 17 that its ambassador was assaulted in his residence, labelling the attack a gross violation of the Vienna Convention.

Last Wednesday, the RSF took over my family house in Khartoum, where my cousins and I have our documents, valuables, and all our memories, one Sudanese woman wrote on Twitter.

Its confirmed by the only neighbour left in the neighbourhood that it is the RSF.RSF soldiers are going out of control, out of Hemetis control, she added, referring to General Daglos nickname.

Another citizen, Tahany, 33, escaped her home when fighting intensified in the area near Khartoums airport.

Having abandoned hopes for an end to the fighting, she decided to join the tens of thousands of Sudanese making the long, arduous trip to Egypt but she first needed to return home to get her travel documents.

Paramilitaries at checkpoints interrogated us as we were trying to return to our neighbourhood, and every time we told them we wanted to pick up some things from our home, she said.

Eventually, Tahany and her mother were allowed entry to the home, escorted by paramilitaries.

We found that all our home items had been used, from the kitchen to the beds, she said. They even mounted a weapon on the balcony on the second floor.

Terrified, Tahany and her mother frantically searched for their travel documents and rushed out.We are now on our way to Egypt, she said. We dont know what has become of our home.

Erdogan leads prayers on eve of fight for political life – Macau Business

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will lead Saturday prayers at Istanbuls iconic Hagia Sophia mosque, ahead of a battle for his political life against a powerful secular rival.

The 69-year-old will be emulating a ritual that Ottoman Sultans performed before they led their men off to war as he braces for Sundays parliamentary and presidential ballot.

Erdogan has never faced a more energised or united opposition than the one led by retired civil servant Kemal Kilicdaroglu and his disparate alliance of six parties.

The Turkish leader excelled at splitting his rivals and forging unlikely unions while winning one national election after another over 21 years.

But his Islamic-rooted party is reeling from anger over Turkeys economic meltdown and a crackdown on civil liberties during Erdogans second decade of rule.

The six opposition parties have put aside their political and cultural differences and joined forces for the lone task of pushing Erdogan out.

They are officially supported by Turkeys main pro-Kurdish party a group that accounts for at least 10 percent of the vote.

The math is not adding up in Erdogans favour and most polls show him trailing his secular rival by a few points.

Kilicdaroglu is now desperately trying to break the 50-percent threshold and avoid a May 28 runoff that could give Erdogan a chance to regroup and reframe the debate.

Are you ready to bring democracy to this country? To bring peace to this country? I promise, I am ready too, Kilicdaroglu told a rally in Ankara.

Erdogan was put in the uncomfortable position on Friday night television of being asked what he would do if he lost.

The veteran leader bristled and pledged to respect the vote.

This is a very silly question, he said.

We came to power in Turkey by democratic means, with the approval of our people. If our people were to change their mind, we would do what democracy requires.

His campaign path to re-election will take him to the scene Saturday of one of the more controversial decisions of his recent rule.

The Hagia Sophia was built as a Byzantine cathedral once the worlds largest before being converted into a mosque by the Ottomans.

It was converted into a museum when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk created a secular post-Ottoman Turkey in 1923.

Erdogans decision to convert it back into a mosquein 2020 solidified his hero status among his religious supporters and contributed to growing Western unease with his rule.

The entire West got mad but I did it, Erdogan told an Istanbul rally on Saturday.

Erdogan has played up religious themes and used culture wars to try and energise his conservative and nationalist base.

He brands the opposition as a pro-LGBT lobby that takes orders from outlawed Kurdish militants and is bankrolled by the West.

The strident message appears to be aimed at taking voters minds off Turkeys most dire economic crisis of his entire rule.

The official annual inflation rate touched 85 percent last year. Economists think the real figure could have been much higher and blame the crisis on Erdogans unconventional financial theories.

Kilicdaroglu pledges to do away with them immediately after taking office.

But the starkness of the choice confronting Turkeys 64 million voters is accompanied by soaring tensions and lingering fears over what Erdogan would do if he lost a narrow vote.

Kilicdaroglu wore a bulletproof vest to his two rallies on Friday after receiving what his party described as a credible threat on his life.

He gave an uncharacteristically short evening speech in Ankara that was originally played up by his campaign.

Kilicdaroglus running mate Ekrem Imamoglu a popular figure who beat Erdogans ally in controversial 2019 Istanbul mayoral polls was pelted by rocks days earlier while touring Turkeys conservative heartland.

Turkish officials launched a formal investigation and made some arrests.

But several senior officials in Erdogans ruling party accused the Istanbul mayor of provoking the incident.

The voting will include southeastern regions that lie in ruins in the wake of a February quake that claimed more than 50,000 lives.

The level of anger in these traditionally pro-Erdogan regions could also help swing Sundays outcome.

Were not happy to be voting in the middle of rubble, but we want the government to change, said Diber Simsek, a resident of the city of Antakya that sustained major damage in the disaster.

Temperature in Singapore soars to 40-year high: officials – Macau Business

Singapore reported its highest temperature in 40 years on Saturday, officials said, as a blistering heatwave burns through large parts of South and Southeast Asia.

Saturdays temperature of 37 degrees Celsius was the highest this year, and matches the record for a daily peak recorded in April 1983, the National Environment Agency said on Facebook.

The current warm and dry conditions are expected to continue tomorrow, the agency said on Saturday.

Short-duration showers are expected next week which may help to moderate the warm temperatures, it added.

May is normally one of the warmest months of the year, according to the NEA.

Some schools in the city-state have relaxed rules on uniforms over the rising mercury in recent days, according to local broadcaster Channel News Asia.

Vietnam reported a record temperature of 44.1 degrees Celsius last week, with its state electricity company warning that the national power system would come under strain this summer due to anticipated heatwaves.

Scientists say global warming is exacerbating adverse weather, with a recent report from the UNs Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning that every increment of global warming will intensify multiple and concurrent hazards.

China wants Macau to break its gambling addiction – The Economist

STAKES IN PUNTO BANCO, a popular version of the card game baccarat, have often risen to well over $100,000 in Macaus VIP suites. The high-rollers have usually come from the Chinese mainland. Even before flying into the gambling haven they would commonly agree to bet upwards of $1m during their stays. Those who have arrived short of cash because of the mainlands strict capital controls have easily found lenders of Macanese patacas.

The flow of super-rich punters from the mainland has been enabled by junket agents and promoters. In 2019 SJM Holdings, which owns a huge French Renaissance-style casino in Macau, brought in almost all of its VIP customers through such middlemen. The share of non- VIP gambling in the city has been rising in recent years. But before the pandemic, VIPs still accounted for about a third of the territorys gross revenues from gaming.

Covid-19 has been a blow to the industry. So, too, have stepped-up efforts by Chinas government to curb the junket business. Betting is illegal on the mainland. In March China said assisting cross-border gambling was also against the law. On November 26th police in the coastal city of Wenzhou issued an arrest warrant for Alvin Chau, the head of SunCity, Macaus biggest junket firm. He was later seized in Macau. Officials there claimed this was unrelated to the mainlands warrant, but many in his business felt a deep chill.

The charges against Mr Chau hint at the scope of the junket industry in Macau. Wenzhous police say he had 12,000 agents serving 80,000 customers on the mainland. SunCity allegedly arranged underground banking services to help them evade capital controls. Junkets are legal in Macau. But the mainlands laws appear to have trumped local ones.

How will Macau survive? China wants to see it transformed from a city of vice into a regional entertainment centre and tech hub. This has proved difficult because most of its available land has been used to build casinos. Macaus government hopes a new development zone will help. It is on nearby Hengqin, an island three times Macaus size. It belongs to the mainland and has been leased in part to Macau. Hengqin will have theme parks, family attractions and a high-speed rail link with Chinas interior. The former Portuguese enclave will become even more like a mainland city.

Johor police Commercial Crime chief Asst Comm Amran Md Jusin said the 45-year-old woman lodged a police report on Sunday (Dec 12).

She received a call on Dec 1 at around 1pm from a male caller who identified himself as an officer from Telekom Malaysia.

The caller told the victim that she had been 'blacklisted', claiming that she had many unpaid phone bills and he would call her again soon, he said in a statement Monday (Dec 13).

ACP Amran added that the victim then received another call from a mobile number, this time from a woman who identified herself as Inspector Ling from Kuantan police headquarters, claiming that she could help the victim by making a police report online.

This 'inspector' then ordered the victim to make several monetary transactions into several bank accounts given for investigative purposes and the money would be returned to her once it was complete.

The victim followed the instructions and made 58 transactions to eight bank accounts between Dec 2 and 9, amounting to RM419,050, before realising she had been cheated after trying to call the 'inspector' several times and not getting an answer, he added.

ACP Imran said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

He reminded the public to always be vigilant especially when receiving calls from unknown callers claiming to be from enforcement agencies.

About AB-729

AB-729 is an RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutic specifically designed to reduce all HBV viral proteins and antigens, including hepatitis B surface antigen, which is thought to be a key prerequisite to enable reawakening of a patients immune system to respond to the virus. AB-729 targets hepatocytes using Arbutus novel covalently conjugated N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc) delivery technology that enables subcutaneous delivery. Clinical data generated thus far has shown single- and multi-doses of AB-729 to be generally safe and well-tolerated while providing meaningful reductions in hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis B DNA.

About HBV

HBV can cause chronic infection which leads to a higher risk of death from cirrhosis and liver cancer. Chronic HBV infection represents a significant unmet medical need. The World Health Organization estimates that over 250 million people worldwide suffer from chronic HBV infection, while other estimates indicate that approximately 2 million people in the United States suffer from chronic HBV infection. Approximately 900,000 people die every year from complications related to chronic HBV infection despite the availability of effective vaccines and current treatment options.

Gov’t reclaims 23,324 sqm land in Taipa – Macau Business

Macau authorities today (Monday) cleared out and recovered a 23,324 square meters land plot next to the Va Nam Industrial Building on Avenida Olmpica da Taipa.

The land recovered in this action was divided in two, with one 19,620 square meter section having had its land concession declared as expired, and a 3,704 square meters illegally occupied land plot.

The Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau (DSSOPT) recently issued an eviction notice to interested parties from the expired land, requiring them to vacate it and return it within the stipulated period.

At the same time, a public notice was also published, with the aim of starting the procedures for evicting and evicting the land that was illegally occupied. Those interested in the expired land had already signed a written declaration and returned most of the land to the Macao SAR Government, however, a small part was still occupied by other people, the department noted.

After the deadlines for vacating and evicting the two parts of the land in question, the government carried out a joint interdepartmental action to vacate and recover the entire land, having closed it and posted a notice to prevent any further illegal occupation.

Brother fears Assange may not survive US prosecution – Macau Business

Julian Assanges brother said Monday he feared the Wikileaks publisher would not survive the United States attempts to prosecute him after his fiancee revealed he had suffered a mini-stroke.

Gabriel Shipton was among about 30 people, including Pink Floyds Roger Waters and actress Susan Sarandon, to rally in support of Assange outside the British consulate in New York.

The protest came a day after Assanges fiancee Stella Moris said Assange had suffered a mini-stroke in late October, on the first day of a US government appeal against a ruling blocking his removal.

The demonstrators were protesting against a decision on Friday by British appeals judges to overturn the ruling after accepting US government assurances Assange would receive appropriate treatment and not be held in punishing isolation in custody.

Very worried about it, Shipton told AFP. This hanging over Julians head just increases the pressure on him now.

So we live in fear that he wont make it through this or that he will die basically, during this process, he added.

The United States wants to put Assange on trial for WikiLeaks 2010 publication of thousands of top-secret military documents about the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Assanges lawyers have previously raised concerns about the effects of his lengthy incarceration on his physical and mental health in a bid to halt the extradition.

Assange spent seven years in Ecuadors London embassy until 2019, after jumping bail in connection with sexual assault allegations in Sweden.

He was then jailed for 50 weeks for breaching bail in that case, which was later dropped, but detained ever since on the grounds he was a flight risk.

Sarandon told Assange supporters that no matter what you think of Julian Assange, his case was about journalism that just isnt about entertainment.

(It) has to do with having an informed public because once this goes, were really dead, she said.

Fundraising campaign mounted to improve treatment for bike crash victim – Macau Daily Times

The workplace and school of the recent heavy motorbike crash victim are putting out a call on several social media platforms for public donations to facilitate a higher level of medical treatment.

Last Friday, the victim was riding his heavy motorbike in the New Urban Zone A when a concrete mixer truck allegedly failed to give way as required by traffic signs.

He was not breathing and did not have a heartbeat when he arrived at the hospital, but was resuscitated by medical staff. He is now receiving treatment in the ICU of Kiang Wu Hospital.

A social media post stated that the hospital medical team acknowledged the need for external experts to perform a series of crucial operations on the victim to increase his odds of survival. However, his family may not be able to afford the cost of such operations.

As such, the City University of Macau Students Union and the Pou Tai Youth and Family Service Complex are co-leading a fund-raiser, hoping to obtain financial support for the victim and his family.

The Public Security Police Force is calling for witnesses of the accident. Information can be provided through 2837 4214. AL
