Do You Recognize These Lessons of Longevity ?

Surveys taken as recently as a few years ago regularly found that Americans underestimated how long they would live. That's no longer the case. We now have a pretty good idea of our longevity.

Longevity is not a topic of discussion for most middle-income Americans, with only half talking about it with a doctor (50 percent) or spouse (49 percent) and only one-fifth (21 percent) discussing life expectancy with a professional advisor.

To compensate for the possibility of outliving their income, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of middle-income Americans plan to reduce their own spending to deal with shortfalls in retirement income and resources. Two-fifths (41 percent) would get a part-time job and one-quarter (25 percent) would sell their home.

Nearly three-fourths (72 percent) of middle-income Americans say Social Security benefits make up at least half or more of their retirement income, which exceeds the national average of 65 percent, according to the Social Security Administration.

One in three (34 percent) of those age 55 and older do not understand that delaying when they begin to collect Social Security can increase their future benefit amount.

One in three (35 percent) middle-income Americans age 55 and older who are not yet receiving Social Security do not know what their Social Security income will be when they retire. As confirmed in a recent poll sponsored by Bankers Life and Casualty Co. in Chicago, seniors think they will live until about the age of 86. That differs from official U.S. Census Bureau projections, which peg the average life span for a 65-year-old at 84.5 years (slightly lower for men; a bit higher for women).

Unfortunately, that's where the good news on longevity ends. Knowing how long we're going to live has not translated into doing much if anything about it.

"More than half of middle-income Boomers (55 percent) have saved less than $100,000 for retirement," the insurer's Center for a Secure Retirement research and education program said. "One-fifth (19 percent) have saved less than $10,000. For this reason, it is not surprising that three out of four (75 percent) middle-income Boomers expect to work in retirement."

The recently released CSO data indicated that the population above the age of 55 now stands at almost 19 per cent. This represents a more than doubling of that in 1980. In actual numbers, it is a little over one quarter of a million people.

This follows the trend in the developed world where the Stanford Center on Longevity indicates that there has been a 30-year increase in life expectancy. This is due, in part, to advances in medical sciences and allied fields including nutrition and sports science. Genetics, however, may be the dominant factor in that there are those whose lifestyle does not conform to generally accepted tenets of healthy living but who nevertheless live to an advanced age.

The late fitness guru Jack Lalanne, who died at the age of 96, promoted proper eating, exercise, positive thinking and relaxation. Continuing clinical and research studies have confirmed this approach. In fact, the diet recommended for longevity and disease prevention includes one high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains and very low in animal products and refined carbohydrates, in addition to exercising.

The importance of the mind-body connection has emerged as a significant factor. Meditation and mindfulness can play a critical role in stress reduction and weight control and are thus being promoted as part of the programme on holistic and preventive medicine now being emphasised.

Despite the advances made in the science of longevity, the average life span is 80-plus years. People 90 and beyond are still the exception, for the ageing process may be delayed by lifestyle changes but cannot be stopped. So the focus now is on research to delay and reverse the aging process and to developing a range of assistive technologies.

Former team mate Phil Neville, 36, plays at Everton and the 39-year-old Ryan Giggs signed a new contract at Old Trafford today keeping him at the club another season after signing his first professional contract there in 1990.

"The majority of the Manchester United players who started in the mid 1990s - Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and I - are still on the pitch," Beckham told French sports daily L'Equipe on Friday.

Butt and Gary Neville have recently started coaching careers at United and England respectively but Scholes returned to the field in January 2012, eight months after calling it quits as he sought to help his club through an injury crisis.

"I think it is because Sir Alex Ferguson showed us the way when we were teenagers. He taught us to respect the game, to respect our body and to love what we do," Beckham said.

"For now, Ryan Giggs is the one who has been furthest (in his career). He continues to play at the highest level and he does not seem to want to stop. But in the end, maybe it will be me (who will quit last)," he said.

Beckham started his professional career at United in 1993 and left to join Real Madrid in 2003.
