CHICAGO, April 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Declining health is the number one longevity concern for middle-income Americans, nearly four times the concern over inadequate retirement savings (10%) or outliving their money (9%), the latest study released by the Bankers Life and Casualty Company Center For A Secure Retirement (CSR) reveals.

The study, Longevity Risk and Reward for Middle-Income Americans surveyed 500 Americans ages 55 to 75 with an annual household income of between $25,000 and $75,000.

Retirement Income ShortfallsTo compensate for the possibility of outliving their savings, here's a look at how middle-income Americans plan to deal with shortfalls in retirement income.

The good news is that the majority of today's middle-income Americans are living within their budget.According to the CSR study, seven out of ten (70%) report living comfortably within their budget.Only one in ten (9%) admit to living beyond their means.

Use of Common Planning MethodsFour in ten (44%) admit that their retirement savings may not last until the end of their life. Yet, when it comes to developing a retirement savings goal, only one-fifth (21%) of middle-income retirees and pre-retirees calculated a monthly retirement income goal number; only one in ten (13%) determined a total savings goal number to reach.

"Realistically assessing longevity can be a powerful tool in planning for retirement," said Chris Campbell, vice president of marketing and business development at Bankers Life and Casualty Company, a national life and health insurer. "Set a clear retirement goal and be realistic about the amount of savings it will take to be able to live the retirement lifestyle you desire."

Retirement AnxietyThe CSR study cites more than half of middle-income Boomers (55%) have saved less than $100,000 for retirement. In light of this reality, it is not surprising that nearly two-thirds (62%) of middle-income pre-retirees report some level of anxiety about retirement; one in four (28%) report being "anxious" or "very anxious."

All of these factors suggest that most middle-income Americans should apply some disciplined planning to overcome these anxieties. Yet that does not seem to be the case, according to the study.

MethodologyThe Bankers Life and Casualty Company Center for a Secure Retirement's study Longevity Risk and Reward for Middle-Income Americans was conducted in November 2012 by the independent research firm The Boomer Project. The full report can be viewed at CenterForASecureRetirement.com.

OKINAWA ISLANDS -- Japans Okinawan island group has a global reputation for longevity, with a healthy number of elderly becoming centenarians.

Rice farmer Hitoshi Nane, 78, can expect many more good years because his parents both lived to be 99. But Nane isn't counting on genes alone, so he doesn't stuff himself.

"People don't eat until they are full, but 80 percent full," Nane said through an interpreter.

He also enjoys a stiff drink of awamori, the rice-based local alcoholic beverage.

Nane lives on Iriomote, the largest island in Okinawa's Yaeyama Islands, where in the village, a group of octogenarians gather regularly for a game of "gate ball."

With the help of an interpreter, they share their tips for a long life.

"Smiling, talking to people, it's very good for health," said one elder.

"Take a nap. Also, I live by myself, so it's not stressful," said another.

PARKERSBURG - Parkersburg City Council Tuesday approved the first reading of an ordinance to indefinitely suspend longevity pay for city employees.

Council unanimously approved the first reading but not until a debate over whether the automatic raises should be done away with entirely.

Last year, council did not include the automatic longevity raises for city employees in its 2012-13 budget. The longevity pay would have increased employee pay by 30 cents an hour each year of service. Council later voted to suspend the increases for a year.

At Tuesday's meeting, Councilman John Kelly argued members needed to take a more definitive approach.

"We need to quit suspending it from year to year," he said. "Eventually there needs to be something done with this."

Mayor Bob Newell said he believed longevity pay should not be eliminated entirely, only suspended.

"This is a tool in the toolbox," he said. "Down the road I suspect we may want to bring this back in some form or fashion. I'm against doing away with it entirely."

Councilman John Rockhold and City Attorney Joe Santer said the ordinance as written would not eliminate longevity pay but also would not require an annual vote.

"This suspends it until further action from city council," Rockhold said.

"It will come back if council chooses to bring it back," Santer said.

The study, Longevity Risk and Reward for Middle-Income Americans, which surveyed 500 Americans ages 55 to 75 with an annual household income of between $25,000 and $75,000, found that middle-income Americans do not spend much time thinking about longevity.In fact, for most, longevity is not a topic of discussion.

Discussing Longevity with Others

Self Perception on LongevityDespite their reluctance to discuss longevity, those surveyed accurately estimated average life expectancy for American adults. On average, respondents with a median age of 65 said they think they will live to age 86, irrespective of gender, income or health.

When it comes to perception of common factors influencing longevity, two-thirds feel that their life expectancy is out of their control, saying that genetics (65%) is the determining factor in how long they will live as compared to their own actions, such as eating right (46%), exercising (44%) or smoking (37%).

Longevity Risk and RewardsLiving longer has its rewards. Middle-income retirees say they are having experiences in retirement that they never imaged, such as travel, volunteering and community involvement.

However, longevity also comes with risk. According to the study, the two primary concerns are declining health associated with age, and the ability to create a sustainable retirement income that may need to last 20 years or more.

"Considering longevity and the risks of outliving retirement savings is a first step in developing and achieving heath, income and even personal goals for a satisfying retirement," said Chris Campbell, vice president of marketing and business development at Bankers Life and Casualty Company, a national life and health insurer. "Discuss with loved ones or a professional advisor how life expectancy may affect decisions you make about your retirement years."

Two Decades Separate Wisdom and Old AgeToday's middle-income Americans, ages 55 to 75, find themselves in their "wisdom" years, but not yet in "old age." Study respondents believe that wisdom comes with turning age 56, but old age does not really start until age 78.

Outlook on FutureWhen asked if their best years are ahead or behind them, the majority of middle-income retirees and pre-retirees are optimistic about the future. Six in ten (60%) middle-income Americans age 55 and older say their best years are ahead of them. Respondents attribute this to their positive attitude or outlook on life and freedom from work.

PHILADELPHIA -- Perhaps the best way to quantify Duke's generation of dominance in college basketball is through NCAA seeding: In the past 17 years, the Blue Devils have made the tournament 17 times, receiving a No. 1 or No. 2 seed 14 times.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski's presence represents the obvious constant, but an underrated factor in Duke's supremacy has been the continuity of the staff.

Duke assistants Chris Collins and Steve Wojciechowski have a combined 27 years of experience under Krzyzewski -- Wojo 14 years and Collins 13 -- an unusually long stretch for assistants at an annually successful high-major program. Consider assistant coach turnover at programs like Louisville, Florida and Pittsburgh and the longevity of Duke's assistants is appreciated.

"Continuity is kind of king in this profession," said Duke Athletic Director Kevin White.

With the Chicago Tribune reporting that Collins will interview for the open Northwestern job, the question again looms as to why Duke's assistant coaches stick around so long. Johnny Dawkins spent 11 years at Duke before taking the Stanford job five seasons ago. Collins and Wojciechowski, who both hold the title of associate head coach, have flirted with opportunities but have never left.

"All of us have aspirations to be head coaches," Collins said. "It has to be something that we all believe in because we do have such a good job."

Jeff Capel, the staff newbie at just two years, recalls hearing people criticize Collins and Wojciechowski because they haven't taken head coaching jobs. Collins turns 39 in April. Wojo is 36.

"Those guys have gotten knocked because they haven't left," Capel said. "I know when I was a head coach, I heard that. It's easy to say on the outside when you don't know. This is a great job. You don't leave this job just for any job."

Washington, March 19 (ANI): When looking to discover the 'secrets of a longer life' many scientists turn to the elderly inhabitants of Ikaria, the Greek island, that boast the highest rates of longevity in the world.

Now, researchers investigating cardiovascular health believe that a cup of boiled Greek coffee holds the clue to the elderly islanders' good health.

Only 0.1 percent of Europeans live to be over 90, yet on the Greek island of Ikaria, the figure is 1 percent. This is recognized as one of the highest longevity rates anywhere - and the islanders tend to live out their longer lives in good health.

Gerasimos Siasos, a medical doctor and professor at the University of Athens Medical School, Greece set out with his team to find out whether the elderly population's coffee drinking had an effect on their health.

In particular, the researchers investigated links between coffee-drinking habits and the subjects' endothelial function. The endothelium is a layer of cells that lines blood vessels, which is affected both by aging and by lifestyle habits (such as smoking).

The team homed in on coffee because recent studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption may slightly reduce the risks of coronary heart disease, and that it may also have a positive impact on several aspects of endothelial health.

From a sample of 673 Ikarians aged over 65 who lived on the island permanently, the researchers randomly selected 71 men and 71 women to take part in the study. Medical staff used health checks (for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) and questionnaires to get more detail on the participants' medical health, lifestyles and coffee drinking, in addition to testing their endothelial function.

The researchers investigated all types of coffee taken by participants - but interestingly more than 87 percent of those in the study consumed boiled, Greek coffee daily.

More importantly, subjects consuming mainly boiled Greek coffee had better endothelial function than those who consumed other types of coffee. Even in those with high blood pressure, boiled Greek coffee consumption was associated with improved endothelial function, without worrying impacts on blood pressure.

"Boiled Greek type of coffee, which is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants and contains only a moderate amount of caffeine, seems to gather benefits compared to other coffee beverages," Siasos said.

One said it unfairly targets black people. Two others applauded the basic conceptthough one said it took the city too long to embrace it and still needs more government back-up.

Those views emerged Thursday morning about New Havens Project Longevity as the three announced candidates for mayor gathered for their first joint forum.

The New Haven Register hosted the forum from 8 to 9 a.m. and live-streamed it on its website. The Registers Shahid Abdul-Karim (at left in photo) moderated the discussion with Democratic candidates (from left next to Abdul-Karin) Gary Holder-Winfield, a Newhallville state representative; Sundiata Keitazulu, a Newhallville plumber; and Justin Elicker, an East Rock alderman. All three are seeking to succeed Mayor John DeStefano, who plans to retire at years end after two decades in office. Other candidates are expected to emerge in coming weeks.

The three offered differing takes on Project Longevity, a joint federal-city-community campaign that targets violent drug gangs.

The project began late last year as part of Police Chief Dean Essermans broader efforts to revive community policing in New Haven.

Modeled on successful similar programs in other cities, Project Longevity identifies the small number of people committing the most shootings in town; maps out their gang affiliations, then brings them to call-ins with prosecutors, cops, social workers, educators, and community leaders. At the call-ins, theyre told that if any one member of the gang commits a shooting, law enforcement will swoop down on all members of the gang and lock them up on any charges they can find. Prosecutors vow to give the cases highest priority. At the same time, leaders offer immediate front-of-the-line spots in programs offering job-training, housing, continuing education if the gang-bangers agree to go straight. Since Project Longevitys roll-out late last year, the city has grown relatively quieter. After a 50 percent drop in murders and 30 percent drop in shootings in 2012, violent crime has continued dropping precipitously so far in 2013. Its too early to attribute the drop on any one of a host of new community-policing initiatives or to judge the long-term impact.

So far, Elicker said in the Register forum Thursday morning, he likes what he sees in Project Longevity.

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Depeche Mode has come a long way since its 1980s debut as part of Britain's New Wave scene, and as it prepares to tour behind its 13th album, no one appears more surprised at the group's longevity than the band members themselves.

The British synthpop pioneers - singer Dave Gahan, guitarist-keyboardist Martin Gore and keyboardist Andy Fletcher - are marking their fourth decade in the music industry with the release of "Delta Machine" on March 26.

"We've always been pessimists at heart, so we never think further ahead than whatever's coming next," Gore, 51, told Reuters at the South by Southwest Music Conference this week.

The band has sold more than 100 million records worldwide since its 1981 debut album "Speak & Spell," thanks to hits along the way like 1984's "People are People" and 1989's "Personal Jesus."

Depeche Mode's textured sound and moody lyrics made it one of the biggest bands to emerge from the British New Wave in the early 1980s, alongside groups such as The Boomtown Rats.

The title "Delta Machine" reflects the musicians' contradictory sounds - they're influenced by the Delta blues, but they also use technology like computers and synthesizers.

"We feel like our music is a blend of organic and inorganic," Gore said.

NEW TOUR, NEW APPROACH

The band's appearance at the SXSW conference is unusual, as was its performance on "The Late Show with David Letterman" this week. Depeche Mode has typically gone straight from rehearsal to tour without leaving time to properly promote a new album, Gore said.
