Lifespan: A Groundbreaking Book About Aging – Wall Street Pit

Just finished reading Dr. David Sinclairs new book, Lifespan, and it goes without saying that this is an intellectually fascinating, inspiring and informative book that demonstrates we are at the dawn of a new era in human biology restructuring.

The book, which surpasses everything we know about aging and life extension, has been written with a rich literary material of impressive depth and clarity to offer a deeper understanding of genetics and human longevity research.

It covers the recent advances in the labs and the actual observations relevant to those discoveries. It also questions the foundations of our basic conception of aging viewed for centuries as inevitable and unstoppable.

In fact, the book includes the development of a proven method by an impressive team of researchers, including George Church, David Sinclair and Steve Horvath in which a technique of just three core reprogramming factors, Oct4, Sox2, and Klf4 is used to reset cell epigenome alterations that affect cells during the aging process, thus restoring youthful vision in mice. More tests are being performed to achieve the same results in other areas of the body as well.

The book also offers Dr. Sinclairs bold vision for the future of humankind, a vision in which we feel and become younger and shift from observers of nature to architects.

Highly recommended book. A must read for anyone interested in the science of aging, and how we can slow or even reverse it.

Former Clinton Aide Blumenthal Tackles Lincoln’s Life in 5 Volumes – WTTW News

A country bitterly divided, dealing with issues of demagoguery, nativism and political dysfunction. That could describe the current state of national affairs, but Sidney Blumenthal says those very conditions produced arguably the nations greatest president: Abraham Lincoln.

A Chicago native, Blumenthal served as the former senior adviser to President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. He has reported and written for The Washington Post, The New Yorker and The New Republic.

He joins us in discussion.

Below, an excerpt from the book.

In 1850, the Union was proclaimed to have been saved again in a great compromise that removed slavery as a controversy from national politics. President Millard Fillmore declared it nothing less than the final settlement. The issue tearing the country apart, whether the vast territory conquered in the Mexican War would be slave or free, was no longer to be a matter of debate. We have been carried in safety through a perilous crisis, Franklin Pierce announced at his inauguration on March 4, 1853.

The Compromise of 1850 admitted Texas as a slave state and California a free one, and avoided determining the status of New Mexico until far into the future. Only a few agitators trying to shield fugitive slaves from being returned to their masters under the new federal law continued to be nuisances. Slavery as a question that would divide the country was now safely consigned to the past as it had once before.

Most importantly, this new compromise left sacrosanct the Compromise of 1820, the Missouri Compromise, the original final settlement. The Missouri crisis had aroused all the issues and arguments revived in the crisis in the aftermath of the Mexican War. The admission of Missouri as a state would increase the proslavery bloc in the Senate to a four-seat majority. Its admittance would also establish a precedent for admitting further Western states as slave states. The Northern objection was mirrored in Southern fears that the entire West would be denied to slavery and the balance of power inevitably shifted. Secretary of State John Quincy Adams wrote in his diary that the Missouri problem was a flaming sword . . . a mere preamblea title page to a great tragic volume. He believed it was based in the Constitutions dishonorable compromise with slavery, a bargain between freedom and slavery that was morally vicious, inconsistent with the principles upon which alone our revolution can be justified. He prophesied that the seeds of the Declaration are yet maturing and that its promise of equality would become the precipice into which the slave- holding planters of his country sooner or later much fall. In the Senate, the Southerners anxiety that slavery might be prohibited in the territories assumed a hostility congealed into ideology against the egalitarian premise of the Declaration of Independence. Senator Nathaniel Macon of North Carolina, the former Speaker of the House, posed the question, A clause in the Declaration of Independence has been read declaring that all men are created equal; follow that sentiment and does it not lead to universal emancipation? The Declaration, Macon stated, is not part of the Constitution or of any other book and there was no place for the free blacks in the United States. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky managed to hammer together a narrow majority for a compromise that brought in Maine as a free state to balance the slave state of Missouri and established a line restricting slavery north of 3631 latitude excepting Missouri. The debate inspired a sense of panic in Thomas Jefferson retired at Monticello. This momentous question, like a fire bell in the night, awakened and filled me with terror. I considered it at once as the knell of the Union.

Jeffersons nightmare hung over the Senate debate of the Compromise of 1850, filled with frightful images of death, premonitions of catastrophe, and curses of doom if slavery were allowed to persist as a vital issue. The Great Triumvirate of Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and John C. Calhoun, the representative political men of their age, hurled lightning bolts from their Olympian heights. Henry Clay, young Abraham Lincolns beau ideal of a statesman, who invented the power of the Speaker of the House, who as a senator crafted the Compromise of 1820, who served as secretary of state, and who was nearly elected president, warned that the nation stood at the edge of the precipice before the fearful and leap is taken in the yawning abyss below, which will inevitably lead to certain and irretrievable destruction. Daniel Webster of Massachusetts, the Godlike Daniel, the voice of liberty and Union, one and inseparable, now and forever, whose framed picture hung in Lincolns law office, cautioned, Secession! Peaceable secession! Sir, your eyes and mine are never destined to see that miracle. The dismemberment of this vast country without convulsion! . . . Sir, he who sees these States, now revolving in harmony around a common center, can expect to see them quit their places and fly off without convulsion, may look the next hour to see the heavenly bodies rush from their spheres and jostle against each other in the realms of space without producing a crash of the universe. John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, whose stunning career included every officecongressman, senator, secretary of war, vice president, secretary of statebut the one he coveted mostpresident of the United Statessat wrapped wraithlike in a black cape on the Senate floor. The great nullifier, who insisted the states had preeminent authority over the federal government, objected to any compromise that would thwart the extension of slavery anywhere in the country, an injustice which he called the oppression of the South. No, sir, he prophesied, the Union can be broken. Calhouns acolyte, Jefferson Davis of Mississippi, in opposing the admission of California as a free state, threatened, If sir, this spirit of sectional aggrandizement, or if gentlemen prefer, this love they bear for the African race, shall cause the disruption of these states, the last chapter of our history will be a sad commentary upon the justice and the wisdom of our people. Calhoun died less than a month after his final appearance in the Senate. Clay and Webster were dead within two years. The old order passed. By then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis was the power behind the president.

Two years earlier, in 1848, a different sort of warning was delivered in the House of Representatives from a backbench congressman, Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, in a bloodcurdling speech that attempted to get to the root of the crisis created by the Mexican War. Lincoln called himself a Proviso man, after the Wilmot Proviso, an act that would prohibit slavery in all the seized territory, which he voted for numerous times but that never passed the Congress. Opening the West to slavery had roiled politics for a decade. In 1844, Lincoln had supported Henry Clays presidential campaign against the annexation of Texas, which Clay called wicked. Clay lost to James K. Polk of Tennessee, who launched the Mexican War that gained territory that would become the states of California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. The balance of political power between North and South, slave states and free, hung on whether slavery would be extended into what was called the Mexican Cession or halted in its tracks.

Lincoln the Proviso Man rose to challenge the narrative of the war in order to undermine the legitimacy of slavery extension. He insisted that the origin of the war was fraudulent and demanded the evidence for the spot where it began. Lincoln the devotee of Shakespeare described President Polk as a Macbeth-like despot, deeply conscious of his guilt and stained by blood he could not wipe awayhe feels the blood of this war, like the blood of Abel, is crying to Heaven against him . . . and trusting to escape scrutiny, by fixing the public gaze upon the exceeding brightness of military glorythat attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of bloodthat serpents eye, that charms to destroy. Polks message on the war that had opening the issue of the extension of slavery, said Lincoln, was the half insane mumbling of a fever-dream.

OSU Extension: 2020’s best garden starts now – Chillicothe Gazette

Ross Meeker, Correspondent Published 11:14 a.m. ET Sept. 22, 2019

Whether you are putting this year's garden to bed for the winter or planning a new space, this is the time of year to get started. All successful gardens require planning. Setting a garden up properly now will make for a much more relaxed and less stressful growing season, for you and your plants. OSU has numerous resources for proper care, of many specific plants spaces, and situations. I strongly encourage you to seek them out or contact our office for any information you may need. Today I want to discuss some best practices for general garden care as fall is rapidly approaching. Look for links throughout for great resources.

Garden success this year was tough, timely plantings were bathed with excess moisture, and late second attempts found drought stress in the middle of production. Others have seen excellent produce as evident in our local markets who have had a decent selection throughout the season. Your garden depending on your circumstance could be at a variety of stages as things slow down its time to look towards next year.

First things first, we want to start clean. Clearing the area of debris will mitigate disease and weed pressure. Discard sickly or diseased plants, and ensure that weed seed is not introduced into compost or your gardens seed bank. Careful removal, before any cultivation, will save lots of work next year. Most diseases present in our gardens are fungal and rely on spores to propagate. If you think a plant may be diseased, err on the side of caution and remove it from the area. Compost the remaining debris elsewhere. In an agronomic setting, we would prefer to leave it in place for nutrient cycling. However, in the intensely managed environment of a garden, this debris can often provide a home for pests. It is best to allow this material to compost in a designated area and once it is ready, to reintroduce it to the system.

Fall is the right time to perform soil tests, and plan soil amendments. Soil PH, composition, macro, and micronutrients, are best adjusted after we know where we stand. The best way is through a soil test. Blanket fertilizer applications, or routine applications, have proven wasteful. Plants can only use what they can. The addition of unnecessary nutrients will not only waste time, money and effort but in time can create masking of other nutrients, as well as contribute nutrient runoff, a water quality issue that we are all facing. So lets test, add what we need and nothing more. These principles apply to lawn care as well. Testing information is available through our office.

Find proper technique and recommendations for soil sampling at https://go.osu.edu/soilsampling. Lime, phosphorus, and potassium applications, done properly, are welcome in the fall. Other nutrients more susceptible to leaching or movement through the soil profile should wait until we have a growing lawn or garden ready to use them. Remember the 4Rs, RIGHT SOURCE, RIGHT RATE, RIGHT TIME, and RIGHT PLACE. Not familiar with these? Follow this link or contact us. https://go.osu.edu/4rflyer

Cover crops offer a fantastic way to improve your garden and utilize a normally fallow time of year to your benefit. This topic warrants an article by itself, but here are the highlights. Our soil is a living environment, the healthier the environment, the higher the capacity for production. Microbial activity in our area is alive and active during the growing year. As the season turns and fallow ground prevails these critters fall dormant, and their populations dwindle, a natural cycle. The nutrients they utilize become free to leach and move away from the root zone, where our crops could have used and recycled them. Cover crops sustain a portion of these organisms through slow times and reduce recovery time in the spring, meaning that our gardens can have a jump-start. Additionally, cover crops add to the organic component of the soil (referring humus or the remnants of living material in its most decayed state) which increases soil water and nutrient holding capacity.

A little strategy with cover cropping can reduce effort and inputs the following year. Cereals offer a grow-in-place straw for mulching gardens and suppress weeds through competition and allelopathy. Legumes can provide readily available nitrogen for next years veggies. Winterkill varieties can reduce tillage effort in the spring, and living mulches done properly can lead to a no-till system that has its list of benefits.

Again, cover crops are a big topic and a buzzword in many production circles. I urge all producers to investigate their many benefits. Like all hot topics, properly vetting information about cover crops is critical. Self-appointed gurus and findings from improper research have clouded this area. Always look to your land grant system for properly reviewed information so that you can be successful.

Finally, in preparing for next year, and probably the most important, make a record. I have forgotten more lessons in the garden than I have ever learned. Start a journal that can span years. I cannot tell you what was where five years ago, crop rotation can prevent disease, reduce inputs, and curb pests. Some are persistent for decades, so make a note. Write down what varieties and cultivars worked, what you actually used in the kitchen and what added to your life. Write down the ones that did not fare well, that were not as tolerant or prone to drought, required too much suckering, or just a pain to keep happy. Draw next year's plan, and keep it up to date, as Mother Nature makes you adapt. We love to say "better luck next year," but that is useless if we forget what happened this year.

Always feel welcome to reach out to OSU Extension Ross County, or our Master Gardeners for help and information. Look for upcoming opportunities to hone your garden skills as we put together our winter schedule.

British schoolgirl killed in Jamaica after family moved for safer life – Metro.co.uk

Caption: British schoolgirl fled London because of knife crime only to be stabbed in her parents native Jamaica (Picture: Mega)

A teenager who left London to live in Jamaica over fears of rising knife crime in the capital has been stabbed to death.

Stefika Smith, 17, left her Thornton Heath home in south London for a new start on the Caribbean Island because her parents Morris, 56, and Pauline, 54, wished she could have the same idyllic life growing up they did.

The star-student, whose killer has yet to be found, was murdered and dumped next to a lonely track beside a sugarcane field on May 12, two days after vanishing on a trip into town with a friend.

She was found wearing her favourite one-piece yellow body suit with a single stab wound to the throat in rural May Pen, in the south of the island, two weeks before her 18th birthday.

Her clothes were ripped and there were signs she had put up a struggle, authorities have said.

Stefikas body was found dumped near a sugarcane field (Picture: Mega)The familys trauma was made all the worse after a picture of Stefikas body was posted on social media, before they had learned she had been killed.

Speaking out for the first time about her daughters death, Pauline said: Ive lost an angel. There was a lot of knife crime in London and I wanted to take Stefika away from those dangers.

We wanted to her to have the same idyllic life my husband and I had growing up in Jamaica. But wicked people put an end to that.

My beautiful sweet daughter left what we saw as a knife threat but became a stabbing victim herself where we took her to be safer. I still cannot take it in.

Stefika, a pupil at Norbury Manor Business Enterprise College for Girls, sang at the gospel choir of the New Testament Church of God in Brixton before moving to Jamaica in May 2016.

Stefika left London in 2016 (Picture: The Mega Agency)Mum Pauline, who herself lived in Jamaica until she was 23, told the Sunday People: Stefika was always concerned about her safety in London when she went out because of the stabbings and gangs.

She didnt like to be on the streets. It stopped her meeting friends or joining groups.

By contrast, growing up in Jamaica in the 1960s was an ideal world. We could do anything totally safely.

There was no sense of danger. We could be outside all the time, swimming in rivers or playing in each others yards.

But crime in the region has soared since the family moved to the area with the government declaring a state of emergency in 2018.

During states of emergency police and military personnel are given the authority to search people and buildings, curtail business hours and detain individuals without a warrant.

Crime rates in Clarendon have soared with the govenment declaring a state of emergency (Picture: The Mega Agency)Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that a one-month extension to the state of emergency in Clarendon, the district covering May Pen, will last until 19 October and said it could yet be extended further.

Under the emergency measures, businesses must close at 10pm each day.

Murder and shooting rates fell by 73 per cent between 5 September and 11 September as a result of the emergency state, police officials said.

They have recorded 948 murders and 908 shooting incidents across 19 police divisions since the start of 2019, with much of the violence linked to gang rivalries.

Satoshi Nakamoto is Dead, Thinks BitMEX’s Arthur Hayes – Cryptonews

Source: iStock/D-Keine

Arthur Hayes, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX, thinks that the Cryptoverses icon and the inventor of the worlds first and most popular cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, is in fact dead.

We dont know who Satoshi Nakamoto is, or even are, but the rumors about their identity, or if they are even still alive for that matter, have been a constant in the Cryptoverse since its inception. Many large figures within this industry have weighed in on the topic too. Just recently, when asked if well ever find out who Satoshi is, Bloomberg reports that BitMEXs co-founder replied with a no, explaining that: I think theyre already dead.

Some are saying that Harold Thomas Finney, cryptographer and crypto pioneer who worked closely with Satoshi Nakamoto, was Satoshi himself - Finney passed away in 2014 and was cryopreserved by the Alcor Life Extension Foundation.

Over the years, many have come out with various claims relating to the Bitcoin founder, but none are as interesting as those claiming to actually be him. The most famous case is that of a controversial Australian computer scientist and supporter of Bitcoin SV (BSV), Craig Wright, known also as Faketoshi. In the most recent episode of the long Faketoshi saga, Wright was ordered by the court to pay BTC 550,000 (USD 5.5 billion) to the brother of his late business partner David Kleiman, who sued Wright for stealing Kleiman's BTC holdings.

Watch the latest reports by Block TV.

In the meantime, we saw Caantoshi enter the scene, when a person called James Caan came out with a series of detailed blog posts, claiming to be the Bitcoin creator.

Going back to Hayes, though, speaking at the Milken Institute Asia Summit in Singapore, he stressed how Satoshi's creation is changing the global market: unlike the traditional markets which have an opening and closing times, as well as lunch and weekend breaks, the cryptocurrency market is opened 24/7/365. Hayes finds that digital finance will have an effect on every aspect of the market, including traditional equities, bond and currency trading, and that these traditional markets will absorb elements of the digital markets, probably costing traders their lunch breaks and weekends in the process, Bloomberg reported.

Hayes, who is known for his earlier predictions, now estimates that BTC will hit USD 20,000 in a year, and USD 100,000 in three years. He explained that one realizes that BTC is not such a strange idea, once one understand[s] that everything will be digital in the next 10 years. He added that crypto is not a threat to fiat and that itd be useful to the governments too, because they can track things better in their native currencies, which they cant do with physical cash.

Meanwhile, as reported in July, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) started an investigation into whether BitMEX broke rules by allowing Americans to trade on the platform, which isnt registered with the agency.

FIT LIFE: 3 ways to release tension in your hamstrings – KY3

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Tight hamstrings can lead to pain in your hips and lower back. So, on today's Fit Life we're visiting with Cady O'Quinn of Sumits Hot Yoga to look at three ways to stretch those hamstrings.

Here's how Cady described these Yoga moves:

From table top position (see video), extend your right leg back. On an exhale, bend the knee, squeezing heel to glutes, as though you want to crush a grape between your calf and hamstrings. Hold for a breath, repeat three times. Return the right leg to extension, flexing the right foot. Lower ball of the foot to the floor and gently press back into the heel, stretching the calf. Hold for five breaths, then relax. Repeat sequence on left side.

Sit on the floor, or prop your seat up with a folded blanket. Extend right leg out, bend left knee and bring left foot to the inside of your right thigh. Sit up tall, and contract your right quadriceps, flexing the right foot, release. Repeat twice more, holding the last contraction for three breaths. Relax right leg, point your navel toward your right knee, and fold over the leg. Hold five to 10 breaths. Roll up slowly. Repeat on left side.

Lie on your back. Knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Extend right leg to the ceiling. Wrap your hands around a towel or a strap around the back of your right thigh, keep shoulders and hips flush to the floor. Flex the right foot, and keep the right knee slightly bent (or very bent, if this is too challenging). Drive the right heel away from the center of your body, using the hands to create resistance. Hold for a count of five, and then relax the leg. Walk the hands/strap up higher and the leg, and repeat, using resistance. One final time, reach as high as you can, keeping the knee soft, and drive the heel away, hold for five seconds and then relax. Repeat this sequence on the left side.

If you see a spotted lanternfly, kill it – PennLive.com

If you see a spotted lanternfly an invasive species native to Asia that has spread to 14 counties in Pennsylvania since 2014 dont call the police. Its not something they can do anything about.

Kill it. Squash it, smash it. Just get rid of it, advises the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. These are called bad bugs for a reason. Dont let them take over your county next.

After youve dispatched the insect, you can report its presence online or by calling 1-888-4BADFLY.

The agency explains, The spotted lanternfly causes serious damage in trees, including oozing sap, wilting, leaf curling and tree dieback.

In addition to tree damage, when spotted lanternflies feed, they excrete a sugary substance, called honeydew, that encourages the growth of black sooty mold, which is harmless to people but causes damage to plants.

And, in counties infested and quarantined for the insect, residents report hundreds of the insects that affect their quality of life and ability to enjoy the outdoors during the spring and summer months. Spotted Lanternflies will cover trees, swarm in the air, and their honeydew can coat decks and play equipment.

After being discovered in Berks County in 2014, the insect has spread to 14 Pennsylvania counties, which are now under quarantine. Those counties are Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Dauphin, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia and Schuylkill.

Infestations of the insect also have been found in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

Spotted lanternflies are beginning to lay their eggs in masses of 30-50 eggs each, according to the department. They will continue through late November or early December.

The egg masses, which look like gray or tan, unevenly spread, smears of mortar or clay, will be deposited on any smooth trunked tree, stone or other flat smooth surface, including vehicles, campers, yard furniture, farm equipment or any other items stored outside.

The non-native, invasive spotted lanternfly passes through four stages of nymph development before becoming the winged adult.

In addition to killing all winged adults, the department encourages the destruction of every egg mass that is spotted. Simply scrape them off, double bag them and throw them in the garbage, or place them in alcohol or hand sanitizer.

Successful scrapings can be reported online.

Penn State Extension has developed additional instructions for homeowners wanting to attack their own spotted lanternfly problems. They advise the following.

Wrap tree trunks that the insects are climbing with sticky tape, which is available online and from local garden centers. Banding is most effective against nymphs in the spring, but homeowners have had success in trapping adults as well.

But sticky tape has trapped birds and small mammals as well. That can be avoided by caging the sticky tape with wire or fencing material wrapped around the tree.

Remove tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), a non-native, invasive plant common in landscape plantings and disturbed areas, such as along the sides of roads. Its a preferred host plant of the spotted lanternfly.

Attack the insects with pesticides. The extension website advises, Only use insecticides that are registered by the Environmental Protection Agency to treat any insect on your property. All EPA-registered insecticides have an EPA registration number and a label for appropriate and legal use. Home remedies should not be used against spotted lanternfly because they may be unsafe to humans, pets and plants, and could be illegal.

The extension website discusses a range of pesticides, including some natural materials.

Geographically, the global surgical rejuvenation market is segmented into five major regions: North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and Rest of the World (RoW). North America followed by Europe accounted for the major market share for surgical rejuvenation due to the technical developments in the medicine and surgery field. These developments have enabled surgeries to be non-invasive and less painful. As the financial condition of developing countries has gradually improved, the disposable income in the hands of citizens has also improved drastically in recent years. This has led to a rise in the expenditure on luxuries such as facial rejuvenation.

The growing complexity of surgical rejuvenation procedures, which has led to the development of pain-free and effective non-surgical techniques, is expected to hamper the demand for surgical rejuvenation. Asia Pacific, followed by Latin America are expected to exhibit the highest growth rate due to rising development, increase in disposable income, growing healthcare industry and the presence of a large patient population in these regions. However, unfavorable reimbursement scenario and increasing cost of surgical procedures are some of the factors that might hinder the growth of surgical rejuvenation market.

F&B players get insights on how to innovate – The Business Times

Mon, Sep 16, 2019 - 5:50 AM

Singapore

SMEs in the food and beverage sector keen to learn how to innovate can look forward to an Oct 1 event at the Food Innovation & Resource Centre (FIRC) at Singapore Polytechnic (SP).

The event, organised by The Business Times in collaboration with The Future Economy Council, will showcase ways the FIRC can help SMEs in their quest for better products, more efficient processes and product acceptance to grow their business.

Launched in 2007, the FIRC has eight labs and provides four main services: consultancy, training, lab testing and the leasing of equipment.

Consultancy refers to professional services from fulltime professionals with expertise in food science and technology, nutrition, automation and more to help solve specific product or process challenges faced.

SMEs can gain a business edge by working with the FIRC on specific issues related to their products and process development, including packaging and shelf life extension, sensory and consumer studies, and smart automation.

For example, in learning how to extend the shelf life of their products, SMEs are better placed to explore opportunities to sell these products overseas.

The FIRC also has dedicated training facilities offering generic, certified and customised training courses including those for food safety, food hygiene and packaging technology.

The centre can assist with conducting pilot trials and has an extensive range of equipment for lease which can be used to manufacture products for test marketing purposes.

So far, the FIRC has completed more than 1,500 consultancy projects and technical services, trained over 5,000 adult learners, and worked with more than 700 food establishments achieving a commendable commercialisation rate of 38 per cent.

Asked about the costs related when collaborating with FIRC, Koh Kok Sin, centre director of FIRC, said: "The charges of each project vary depending on the type of services needed, and are based on cost recovery of the expected man-hours and materials that will be spent on the project."

Kelly Koh, manager at All The Batter, which touts itself as "Singapore's first avocado-themed cafe", said: "It would be indeed useful to find out how the Food Innovation & Resource Centre can help to improve our business. We would be interested to find out how to extend the shelf life of our fresh foods made without preservatives."

The Oct 1 event, which includes a tour of the facilities, is being held at Level 5 of Singapore Polytechnic's Block T11C at 500 Dover Road from 3 to 5.30 pm.

Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry, will be engaging participants in a dialogue to discuss key areas of concern in the food and beverage businesses.

Participants will hear firsthand accounts from F&B business owners who have worked with the FIRC, and learn how the collaboration has helped to fuel growth for their business.

The Life Extension Blog

The latest research shows that natural medicine could be the best place to look for new chronic pain treatments. Researchers recently discovered an intrinsic fatty acid, called PEA (Palmitoylethanolamide), that inhibits peripheral nerve inflammationtheorized as the first step in developing chronic pain.

Additionally, a little-known plant extract called honokiol improves GABA signaling in the brain, thus restoring a normalized perception of painan important step for chronic pain relief.

The newest approach to finding relief might include supplementing with PEA and honokiol. Life Extensions Michael A. Smith, MD, and Crystal Gossard, DCN, CNS, LDN, discuss chronic pain and readily available solutions that dont involve opioids in this episode of Live Foreverish.

Did you know that chronic pain is not only long-term, day-in-and-day-out pain, but a diagnosis in its own right?

Chronic pain is defined as persistent or recurrent pain lasting longer than 3 months.1 While acute pain is the temporary pain that is the result of numerous possible occurrences or conditions, chronic pain is something that many people live with 24 hours a day, often for years. It is a condition that involves more than the site of the initial insult to the body and includes changes that occur in the spinal cord and the brain.

Chronic pain is now recognized as a diagnosis that is separate from any disease or condition that may have initiated it. As an article published recently in the journal Postgraduate Medicine noted, Evidence supports the redefinition of chronic pain as a distinct disease entity, not simply a symptom of injury or illness.2

According to a recent review, If one views chronic pain as a single disease entity, then it is the most common and costly medical condition.3

Chronic pain symptoms

In addition to persistent, significant pain, people suffering from chronic pain unsurprisingly endure other symptoms, including a significant amount of stress which, in turn, can aggravate their pain.4 Depression, anxiety, insomnia, physical disability and even cognitive changes can also be experienced by those suffering from chronic pain.

Local anesthetic injections that can be administered by a physician are sometimes an option. There are also pain-relieving patches, balms, lotions and ointments that can be applied topically.

Natural therapies for chronic pain include acupuncture, spinal adjustments, exercise, physical therapy, meditation, massage and specific plant compounds.5

PEA and HonokiolExciting New Options for Pain Relief

How does PEA work?

Palmitoylethanolamide, which (fortunately) is referred to by its acronym PEA, is a fatty acid produced in the human body that also occurs in small amounts in egg yolk, milk, soy and other foods.6 Available clinical data support the ability of PEA to relieve discomfort.7 The compound targets the mast cells activated peripherally during the initial insult to the body that is the first step in the development of chronic pain, thereby reducing the release of inflammatory mediators. PEAs action against mast-cell driven localized inflammation is what makes it different from other compoundsnatural and otherwisethat have an anti-inflammatory action.6

PEA also targets the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPAR-alpha) to support a healthy level of inflammation. According to a recent review, Synergistic interactions among several mechanisms often seem necessary so that PEA can produce its important therapeutic effects, both in the central and the peripheral nervous system.6

Human studies have revealed benefits for the use of PEA for sciatic nerve pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome and migraine.8- 11 Doses used in these trials range from 300 milligrams to 1,200 milligrams.

The results of anatomical, biochemical, molecular and pharmacological studies support the notion that generalized activation of GABA receptor systems dampens the response to painful stimuli, write S. J. Enaa and K. E. McCarson in Advances in Pharmacology. The data leave little doubt that, under certain circumstances, stimulation of neuroanatomically discreet GABA receptor sites could be of benefit in the management of pain.13

Targeting the beginning and the end of the development of chronic pain is one way to break the pain cycle. Unlike NSAIDs, PEA and honokiol are safe on the stomach, and unlike opioid drugs, theyre nonaddictive.

Although chronic pain has frustrated patients and physicians alike, there are treatment options that dont involve the use of dangerous and addictive drugs. Do you or someone you care about suffer from chronic pain?

Life Extension Foundation – Wikipedia

The Life Extension Foundation (LEF) is a nonprofit organization that sells supplements and vitamins. Its claimed goals are to extend the healthy human lifespan by discovering scientific methods to control aging and eradicate disease. It is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

It was founded by Saul Kent and William Faloon in 1980.[1][2]

In 1987, the FDA raided the Life Extension Foundation's warehouse, and charged Kent and Faloon with 27 counts, including that of distributing unapproved drugs, in later dropped charges. In response Kent and Faloon opened the FDA Holocaust Museum, a one-room museum that contains "books and articles about life extension" and comparisons between the FDA and the Nazis.[3]

In May 2013, the Internal Revenue Service revoked the Life Extension Foundations tax-exempt status, retroactive to 2006.[4] Forbes reported that "The IRS problem with the Foundation is [...] an entirely worldly one: it asserts the membership organizations operations seem to be too entwined with the for-profit Life Extension Buyers Club."[5] LEF filed a Complaint for Declaratory Judgment on August 7, 2013, in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia challenging the IRS' allegations.[6]The case is pending.[7] Its most recent tax filing at the time stated that it had assets of over $25 million and netted more than $3 million on revenue of more than $18 million that year.[5]

The Foundation claims that its primary purpose is to fund research and disseminate information on life extension, preventive medicine, anti-aging and optimal health as well as sports performance, with a focus on hormonal and nutritional supplementation, deriving much of its income from the sale of vitamins and supplements.[8]

In the late 1990s, it sold "antiaging nostrums like DHEA and melatonin," whose "antiaging benefits" mainstream researchers asserted were "dubious or nonexistent".[1]

More recently, it has been involved in providing $5 million in funding to the Stasis Foundation,[5] an organization which aims to build a "Timeship" which would aid in the "cryopreservation of patients, organs, the DNA of humans and endangered species," but had been threatened with the loss of nonprofit status due to the lack of construction up to the year 2011.[9] In 2016, the Stasis Foundation claimed to have begun work on the Timeship.[10]

The Life Extension Foundation also donated $3.5 million to 21st Century Medicine, a for-profit company that specializes in living systems preservation technology[5] that was founded by Kent.[1]

The life-saving browser shortcut everyone should know – CNET

Lost tabs? No problem.

If I had a dollar for every time I'd accidentally closed a browser tab -- or worse, an entire windowful of 'em -- I'd be rich.

But there's a simple keyboard shortcut that can instantly correct this error: Ctrl-Shift-T.

OrApple-Shift-T, if you're using a Mac.

Honestly, I'm a little embarrassed to admit I only discovered the shortcut a few months back, but it's changed my life ever since. (I used to use a browser extension called TooManyTabs to do something similar, but this is way better.)

Just know that some browsers work better than others. With Chrome or Safari, you can restore an entire window full of tabs with this one quick three-button press, so long as your browser is open.

But with Firefox or Microsoft Edge, you can only restore tabs one at a time, and only if you opened those exact tabs in the same browser window.

If this keyboard shortcut is new to me, I'm betting it could be new to you too. If not, maybe it'll help someone else?

Rangers Renew Partnership With Globe Life For Stadium Naming Rights – CBS DFW

August 24, 2017 11:10 AM

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) The Texas Rangers have a name for their new ballpark slated to be open in 2020 and its very familiar.

The Rangers and Globe Life announced an extension of their naming rights partnership through the year 2048.

Proposed Rangers baseball stadium (credit: City of Arlington)

In a pressconferenceon Thursday, officials announced that the new ballpark will be called Globe Life Field, not to be confused with the Rangers current home, Globe Life Park.

The futurebillion-dollar climate-controlled stadium deal will keep the Texas Rangers in Arlington at least through 2054.

Half of the money for the new stadium comes from the city, the other half from the Rangers.

Last November, Arlington voters approved the extension of a half-cent sales tax, 2 percent hotel-occupancy tax and 5 percent car-rental tax for the new Rangers stadium.

That revenue previously went to defray Arlingtons $155 million debt on its share of the cost of AT&T Stadium, the home of the NFLs Dallas Cowboys.

The stadium should be completed in time for the 2020 MLB season.

Keppel secures order worth more than US$400m to build two LNG containerships – Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

Keppel AmFELS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) in the United States (US), has secured a contract worth more than US$400m from Honolulu-based Pasha Hawaii for the construction of two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) fueled containerships.

The dual fuel LNG vessels will be built to Keppels proprietary design with delivery of the first vessel expected in 1Q 2020, and the second vessel in 3Q 2020.

Mr Simon Lee, President of Keppel AmFELS said, We are pleased that Pasha has chosen us to build their first two LNG fueled containerships to our innovative design. Keppel O&M is at the forefront of designing vessels that run on LNG propulsion systems and has the experience in LNG vessel conversions as well as the expertise in newbuild specialised vessels. In addition, Keppel AmFELS is ideally located and well-equipped to build a wide variety of vessels for the Jones Act market. We look forward to building these ships which will have a direct impact on American jobs at our shipyard and suppliers across the country.

This contract with Keppel allows Pasha Hawaii to continue to move forward in our commitment to providing the best resources possible for our customers and Hawaiis shipping industry, while minimising our environmental footprint, said George Pasha, IV, President and CEO of The Pasha Group. We are proud supporters of the Jones Act and look forward to working with Keppels team of highly skilled shipbuilders.

Customised to Pasha Hawaiis requirements, the new, 774-foot Jones Act vessels will be able to carry 2,525 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), including a fully laden capacity of 500 45-foot containers, 400 refrigerated containers, and 300 40-foot dry containers, with a sailing speed of 23 knots. The ships hull has been fully optimised using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and will be one of the most hydrodynamically efficient hulls in the world.

The containerships will be able to run completely on LNG fuel, dramatically reducing their environmental impact and increasing fuel efficiency. Energy savings will also be achieved with a state-of-the-art engine, an optimised hull form, and an underwater propulsion system with a high-efficiency rudder and propeller.

When compared to conventional fuels, LNG is a much cleaner alternative fuel for shipping and offers significant environmental benefits, including the reduction of up to 95 percent sulphur oxides, nearly 100 percent particulate matter, up to 90 percent nitrogen oxides, and up to 25 percent carbon dioxide emissions from engine exhaust emissions.

Located in Brownsville, Texas, Keppel AmFELS possesses comprehensive facilities, a highly-capable workforce, and a strong track record in the construction, refurbishment, conversion, life extension and repair of a variety of projects.

The Jones Act requires vessels carrying goods between US ports to be built in the US, and Keppel AmFELS is well-positioned to capture opportunities in this market. The average age of the US-built fleet of vessels is more than 30 years old, beyond the typical operating life of most ocean-going vessels, and new vessels will be needed to meet the latest safety and environmental standards.

The above contract is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets or earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year. Source: Keppel AmFELS

In SA, the feasibility study into the $265m Klipspruit life extension project has been completed and a final investment decision will be made before end-December. Kerr said Klipspruits current reserve would be depleted by 2020.

Mike Fraser, president and chief operating officer for Africa, said Klipspruit was close to Eskoms Kusile power station and although it was an export coal mine, the mix could be changed to suit Eskoms needs.

At the end of June South32 held $1.6bn in net cash, five times more than a year ago.

It recently began a $500m share buyback programme, which was raised to $750m, as the most efficient mechanism for returning cash to shareholders. About $539m of the programme is still to be spent.

The shares added 1% to R30.73 after the announcement.
