Richie Incognito finds redemption in silver and black – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Richie Incognito went searching for redemption last year. The veteran NFL guard discovered it in a franchise that has time and again offered players opportunity for a brighter tomorrow. Second and sometimes more chances. Its the Raiders Way.

It was at training camp last season when Incognito answered questions about issues with the law and locker room bullying at previous NFL stops. About incidents that called into question his mental health. About all those demons he fought daily.

Now, inquiries have taken a much different tone: Simply, how at age 37 will he follow what was one of the best seasons of his career.

Few were better

The positives from a 7-9 record are few, but Incognito stood on an efficient side of the ledger. The Raiders signed him to a one-year deal in May of 2019, a central reason being they needed to upgrade his position and believed he could still play at a four-time Pro Bowl level.

At the end of the day, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock said at the time, you cant have all Boy Scouts Were all going to take ownership with Richie. The expectation is for him to not only be a good football player, but to be a really good human being. Its a two-way street weve got to help him help himself.

Last December, Incognito signed a two-year extension with a base salary of $5 million and incentives that could push the yearly total beyond $6.3 million. It seems he did his part.

There were few better guards in the NFL last season, but talent has never been an issue with Incognito. His is as massive as his 6-foot-3, 322-pound frame.

Even after missing the 2018 season, one in which he retired, un-retired and then was cut by the Bills, his production was nearly unparalleled in 2019: According to Pro Football Focus, Incognito had a single-season best pass-blocking rate of 88.5.

He allowed just one sack and nine pressures on 414 pass-blocking snaps. That is astaggeringly low failure rate of 2.2 percent, which trailed only Marshal Yanda of the Ravens among qualifying guards.

Yanda, by the way, retired in March and will eventually receive a Hall of Fame bust.

You know, its been great, Incognito said of his time with the Raiders. I was really blown away by the support (Mayock) and (head coach) Jon Gruden threw behind me. I was able to come in and be myself. Guys got to know me, and my role as a leader has grown on this team. It has been special. I just want to be the same guy I was last year.

It was vindicating. I had a tumultuous year off. I had to fight back from a lot. I came in and really just ingrained myself in the organization. It had my back. Im forever grateful to the organization for giving me an opportunity. Now its just time to go out there and kick some ass.

Las Vegas ready

He can always be more disciplined. Incognito has been fined more than $700,000 in his career, including suspensions. Of his eight penalties last year (tied for fourth-most among NFL guards), he was docked $21,054 for a chop block and unnecessary roughness against the Bears in London. Then, a late holding penalty at Houston took the Raiders out of field-goal range. They never possessed the ball again and lost 27-24.

But he has fit with the Raiders far better than most imagined. There is also this interesting storyline: Incognito and his father, who passed away in 2018, bought property in Las Vegas three years ago. Their plan was to attend games at Allegiant Stadium once Incognito retired for good.

Now, the son will be playing in it.

We were just going to go and cheer for the Raiders, he said. I took 2018 off and realized I still loved football. Coach Gruden was in my ear about playing. He already got me to come out of retirement and it couldnt have worked out any better. Vegas was always in the cards for me.

Redemption in Sin City. You cant make these things up.

Seniors are in the crosshairs – Las Vegas Sun

By Don Martin, Las Vegas

Friday, Sept. 4, 2020 | 2 a.m.

Many people say this is the most important election in 90 years. This is especially true for seniors. The problem is, most seniors have no idea what President Donald Trump has in store for them in his proposed 2021 budget.

Now that Trump has started paying out over $1 trillion in tax giveaways for corporate cronies and wealthy contributors, he plans to make seniors pay for it. In his 2021 budget, Trump plans to slash $756 billion out of the earned benefits seniors have accrued over a lifetime of building this great nation.

While Trump is in the courts trying to erase the last vestiges of Obamacare, he has broken his promise of offering the best health care plan ever. He is returning Americans to enduring the fear of being denied coverage over preexisting conditions, medical bankruptcies and death for those turned down as insurance ineligible for any care.

Trump also has plans to cut Social Security and severely eviscerate Medicaid, which seniors turn to when a retirees money runs out.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, would peel back those corporate tax breaks and increase Social Security annual payments by $6,500, taking 500,000 seniors out of poverty by 2030. Biden, like any good Democrat, will never cut the senior safety net, because thats not what Democrats do.

As a senior myself, who has started and run many businesses honestly, paying all my taxes, I find it inconceivable that I must face old age in fear of living in poverty.

Raiders driving force Carl Nassib feels at home with his hand in the dirt – The Mercury News

Carl Nassib likes everything about his new home in Las Vegas except for being behind the wheel.

I have to drive like Vin Diesel in `Fast and Furious to stay alive, the Raiders defensive end said Thursday via Zoom teleconference. Craziest drivers Ive ever seen in my life.

If Nassib can drive like he plays football, he wont lack for effort. Nassib knows only one speed, so assume hell be cutting across lanes of traffic on two wheels if thats what it takes to reach his destination.

Its that quality that drew the Raiders to Nassib during free agency, as they shelled out a reported guarantee of $17 million in a three-year contract worth a maximum value of $25 million.

Well, that plus the fact that hes 6-foot-7 and 275 pounds.

Want to know why the Raiders didnt pursue Yannick Ngakoue and havent made a move toward the available Jadeveon Clowney? Because they believe putting Nassib on the edge is the antidote to a mediocre pass rush even if he spends as many defensive snaps on the sideline as he does on the field.

Over the last two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Nassib played in a 3-4 defense as an outside linebacker. Sometimes he rushed while standing up. Sometimes he put two hands on the ground and split wide. He even chased receivers downfield on occasion and broke up the occasional pass.

Nassibs leap-off-the-screen effort level made him a fan favorite, even as he realized his role with the Bucs wasnt necessarily suited to his strengths.

Im really excited to be playing the position I feel like Im meant to play, being a 4-3 D-end, Nassib said. I have my hand in the dirt I had to make a lot of adjustments going to outside linebacker.

The signing for the Raiders was viewed in some circles as a reach. Nassib had 12 1/2 sacks over the past two seasons in Tampa Bay, playing roughly half the snaps. The Raiders made him their highest-paid defensive lineman at an average salary of $8.33 million per year.

But given the going rate for edge players, it wasnt really out of line. Nassib will be getting about half what the No. 10 player at his position receives. Considering how hard Nassib competes, being an every down player would reduce his effectiveness rather than enhance it.

All of which makes Nassib perfect for the philosophy of new defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, who values effort and hustle above all else. Both Nassib and second-year end Maxx Crosby are off the charts in terms of getting after it, a quality they believe can create a ripple effect amongst the front four.

I guess you could say its contagious, Nassib said. I personally would say its a standard that (Marinelli) sets, and he does not waver off the standard.

The Raiders system should keep Nassibs snap count about where it was with the Bucs, subbing in and out with Crosby, Clelin Ferrell and Arden Key as outside rushers, with Ferrell moving inside on occasion along with Maliek Collins Johnathan Hankins, Maurice Hurst and Daniel Ross.

While the Raiders improved their pass rush a year ago, going from an appalling 13 sacks to 32, the fact is their jump was from 32nd to a tie for 25th. Theyre still 15 to 20 sacks from being truly formidable. This years opposition includes Patrick Mahomes (twice), Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and Philip Rivers, all looking to prey upon a young secondary but needing the time to succeed.

Thus the Raiders are hoping for a centipede effect and fresh legs to apply pressure.

You dont want any dropoff, Nassib said. You want to consistently get after it, consistently pressure. I think were going to do that here.

Nassib, 27, has a prove it mentality borne of being an angular 6-foot-6, 218-pound walk-on at Penn State, before ascending to a scholarship and then being honored as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Ted Hendricks Award as the best defensive end in college football.

A third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, Nassib was inexplicably cut after two seasons, the second of which the Browns were 0-16.

Tampa Bay claimed Nassib on waivers, and once there he formed an opinion of Jon Gruden from a distance.

I never had met him personally but playing in Tampa, you hear about him, Nassib said. The whole town still loves him.

Gruden, combined with Marinelli, a better scheme fit and a huge paycheck, turned out to be a winning hand.

The cards all matched up and Im really happy to be here, Nassib said.

Speaking of cards, Nassib isnt much for games of chance while residing in a city that is famous for them. When it comes to money, Nassib is all about compounding interest, and he even gained a measure of fame on HBOs Hard Knocks with the Browns for giving his teammates a seminar on camera. Hes attempted to educate some of his Raiders teammates as well.

I hate gambling, Nassib said. Ive given little spreadsheets, one-page documents, to teammates, just the basics, and Ive had multiple conversations. I love it. I love hearing about that kind of stuff. Its not about how much you earn its about how much you save.

Nevada landlord charged with hate crime in tenants beating – Las Vegas Review-Journal

A landlord in Indian Springs is charged with a hate crime after police said he beat a tenant with a stick during an argument last month.

Ryan Perry, 45, is charged with battery with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm with a hate crime enhancement, Las Vegas Justice Court records show. According to an arrest report from the Metropolitan Police Department, he beat his tenant with a stick eight times while the men stood in their driveways Aug. 5.

Police said Perry owns the house he lives in and the house next door, where the tenant and his family live. Indian Springs is about 45 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

Police records indicate officers have been called to fights between the two men four times in the past two months. Perry told police he wants to evict them, but Nevadas moratorium on evictions has prevented him, according to the report.

The tenant told police Perry had shut off the electricity and that when the two saw each other in their neighboring driveways they began verbally challenging each other. The tenant said Perry told him youre going to jail and Im having your kids taken away, the report said.

Police spoke to multiple witnesses and reviewed video evidence that showed that Perrys wife swung a large metal pole at the tenant and missed twice before Perry hit him eight times with a 2-foot stick, the report said.

Perry told police the fighting began when the tenant yelled at him and threw rocks, though none of them struck him.

Perry was released on bail with the conditions he have no contact with the tenant and stay out of trouble. He is expected in court again Oct. 1.

Las Vegas Is Too Much for MostBut That’s Why I Love It – Cond Nast Traveler

I was barely 21 the first time I set eyes on Sin City. That made this London boy old enough (just) to enjoy everything it had to offer, beginning with the football-field-size buffet at the Sands, my first all-American, all-you-can-eat experience. Ever since, I've relished the city's sequins-on, shoulders-back shamelessness, a joie de vivre that the French can only dream about. Indeed, much like America itself, Vegas has an elastic ability to co-opt and absorb foreign cultures, French or otherwise, like EPCOT with cocktails and Cirque du Soleil. The Strip, its fluorescent centerpiece, is the truest example of ersatz, with its miniature Eiffel Tower, facsimile of Venice complete with gondoliers, and gleaming Egyptian pyramid crowned by lasers. But above all, Vegas represents an absurdist Platonic ideal: a land of plenty, more American than apple pie, and twice as delicious. Decades after that first trip, I will still stand transfixed on the Strip in bone-dry 110-degree heat as half-familiar names and faces blare from the dozens of illuminated signs perched jauntily above the sidewalk. For some, the city is terrifying, a garish cartoon of debaucherybut that's why I love it so. Come here to shed your inhibitions, and your clothes, without thinking twice about either.

Circa Sports expanding to Tuscany Suites – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Circa Sports venues are expanding outside of downtown Las Vegas.

Derek Stevens sports betting brand has partnered with the Tuscany to rebrand the Strip-adjacent hotel-casinos sportsbook. The venue is set to open in March.

Matt Metcalf, Circa Sports sportsbook director, said the partnership is a key step in the brand becoming one of the premier sports betting brands in the Las Vegas Valley.

The companys app and first sportsbook launched in 2019 at Derek Stevens Golden Gate casino, before opening at its sister property, D Las Vegas. It will also be featured in Stevens Circa resort-casino, which is set to open the worlds largest sportsbook on Oct. 28, according to a Wednesday news release.

Circa Sports also launched a mobile app outside of Nevada in July: Circa Sports Colorado.

Were thrilled to welcome Tuscany as Circa Sports first satellite location in Las Vegas, Stevens said in the release. This will open a lot of doors in the market to provide wider sports betting opportunities for customers.

According to the release, the brand aims to deliver a betting menu that appeals to novices and professionals alike.

Tuscany Suites CEO Brett Heers said he hopes the partnership can turn the property into a top sportsbook destination. The casinos website shows its sportsbook is operated by William Hill.

The Strip Reopens But Las Vegas Casino Revenue is Still Tumbling – The Daily Gazette

The state of Nevada has allowed the reopening of Casinos since June 4. That is a few months after casinos in the state were forced to temporarily close because of the pandemic. The first few places to reopen since then are MGM hotels like Bellagio, New York-New York, and the MGM Grand.

Bloomberg has recently released a report that the casino revenue in the Las Vegas Strip fell 39 percent to 330.1 million US dollars in July from a year ago. The total casino revenue of the state tumbled 26 percent to $756.8 million. This just shows that after the first full month of the reopening of the casinos in the state, Las Vegas is struggling to get customers and tourists once again.

According to Bloomberg, the challenge that the state is encountering relies on aviation encounters. People are hesitant to travel long distances if its not necessary. People are likely choosing to stay at home to keep safe from the virus. After all, its so easy to play casino games on the internet nowadays. There are astronomical casino games online that you can choose from and you can check sites like CasinoWhizz.com to know which sites offer the games that you can play in Las Vegas Casinos.

With the tax revenue that the Nevada state is getting from the casino industry, the officials said that it could eventually hurt the states overall tax revenue. This is especially now that the states virus-related expenses are rising.

The reopening of the casinos in Las Vegas doesnt mean that things are getting back to normal. The new normal in these casinos include sinks with soap and running water sitting on the casino floors and requiring guests to wear masks.

Recently, MGM Resorts The Mirage was also opened to the public for the first time after its five-month closure. Some people happily awaited its reopening and they even clapped as soon as its doors reopened. However, according to some visitors, things are simply not the same.

As soon as the guests enter The Mirage, they immediately see Plexiglas barriers that separate the staff from the guests on the check-in area. Temperature checks are also conducted. When it comes to the casino floors, there are also Plexiglas barriers on the gaming tables. Signs that encourage social distancing can also be found all over the casino.

Not all slot machines are also available to be played with as every other machine is only powered to make sure that adequate distance is in place between the customers or the players.

Reno Gazette-Journal interviewed some of the visitors at The Mirage. They were able to talk to Karen Onedo, a 52-year-old pharmaceutical professional. She said, "Things have changed a lot," she said. "It's been a lot quieter. I'm a little disappointed there aren't any shows.

"They need to come back. Vegas can't be the same without the shows, Karens husband who was also with her as they play a slot machine game added.

The Mirage has been around since 1989 and it never closed until this year because of the pandemic. Niklas Rytterstrom, The Mirages president, said that getting back to work will be a process as the propertys amenities begin to be rolled out.

Rytterstrom said, Over the upcoming days and weeks and months were slowly going to roll as we see the demand coming, and obviously, some of it depends on some of the government regulations. Its Las Vegas, this is such a unique experience, it doesnt matter where you are in the world, there is no place like Las Vegas.

Currently, The Mirage opened its attractions like the Dolphin Habitat, Siegfried & Roys Secret Garden, and the nightly volcano show.

The lack of live shows could also be why regular Las Vegas casino players or goers are still not coming back to the casinos. Live entertainment is still dull at the moment because gatherings with more than 50 people are still not allowed within the state. These live shows make Las Vegas the place to be and the ultimate hotspot for many people, and without them, Las Vegas is simply not the same.

While many casinos have already reopened in Las Vegas, there are still some properties that remain closed. The Stations Texas Station, Fiesta Henderson, Fiesta Rancho, and the off-Strip Palms are still closed and according to the CEO of the Red Rock Resorts, the parent company of Station Casinos, they are still uncertain about reopening these places.

Yes Announce The Royal Affair Live From Las Vegas Concert LP – Rolling Stone

Yes have announced plans to release The Royal Affair Tour: Live From Las Vegas on October 30th. Its a live album recorded July 26th, 2019 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.

The set mixes Yes classics like Ive Seen All Good People, Roundabout and Starship Trooper with covers like Simon and Garfunkels America, Richie Havens No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed and John Lennons Imagine.

Having the opportunity to bring together the band members in the development of a well-refined set of songs that captures the bands true potential is simply an honour for me, Yes guitarist Steve Howe said in a statement.

The 2019 Royal Affair tour united Yes with fellow prog acts Asia, Carl Palmers ELP Legacy and John Lodge of the Moody Blues. Howe, Palmer and Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes pulled double duty every night by performing in their own bands along with Asia, the prog-rock supergroup they founded in 1982. Original Asia frontman John Wetton died in 2017 and former Guns N Roses guitarist Ron Bumblefoot Thal handled lead vocals on the tour.

Yes also has a replacement lead singer, Jon Davison, even though original frontman Jon Anderson remains active and has expressed a desire to return to the band numerous times in recent years. Im very open to it, Anderson told Rolling Stone in 2019. Its been 50 years now. You think something has got to happen. To me, a great album has to be made. Thats what I think. I dont know how its going to be made, but the final Yes event should happen.

Howe shot down the idea in a July interview with Rolling Stone. Yes is about people who love working together and can, he said. That word can carries the whole story. That means compatibility and the same awarenesses about what we want to do. And I think we passed that point a long time ago.

In 2016, Anderson united with former Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman and former Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin and began touring as ARW. The following year, they changed their name to Yes Featuring Jon Anderson, Trevor Rabin and Rick Wakeman. It leads to a brief situation where there were two versions of Yes on the road at the same time, although the ARW incarnation have been on an indefinite hiatus since 2018.

The Steve Howe incarnation of Yes was supposed to tour this year, but they pushed the dates to 2021 due to the pandemic. The show will feature a complete performance of their 1974 LP Relayer.

More than 500 visitors to Nevada infected with COVID-19 – Las Vegas Review-Journal

More than 500 visitors to Nevada have tested positive for COVID-19 since casinos reopened in June, according to newly released state data.

The Department of Health and Human services reported that as of Aug. 15, at least 530 visitors had tested positive for the novel coronavirus either while in the state or soon after returning home. The data dates back to June 1; casinos reopened June 4.

As of July 25, only 347 infected visitors had been identified, according to department data released earlier this month.

The vast majority of the visitors tested positive while they were in Nevada. The state knows of only 11 who have tested positive after they returned home, an increase of just one case since data was last released.

Nevada health officials have said they only find out about visitor cases discovered outside the state if the visitors home state notifies them. So far, Nevada has been notified of such cases in Arizona, California and Ohio.

Professor Samuel Scarpino, head of Northeastern Universitys Emergent Epidemics Lab, has said the low number likely reflects an antiquated interstate disease reporting system.

My hunch would be that those numbers are low because of reporting issues, not because theyre actually low, he told the Review-Journal last week.

Among Nevada residents, more than 67,000 cases had been identified throughout the states outbreak as of Thursday.

Ready for action: Local pro boxer returns to ring in Las Vegas on Saturday – Houma Courier

Chris Singleton|The Courier

It is almost showtime for local professional boxer Rance Pressure Ward.

Ward is scheduled to step in the ring to take on Javier Martinez in a middleweight fight put on by Top Rank Boxing promotions on Saturday in Las Vegas.

The fight is one of eight matches scheduled for Saturday at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. It will be televised on ESPN+ and will start at 6 p.m.

It will be Wards first trip back to fight in Las Vegas since he tested positive for the coronavirus while preparing for the scheduled middleweight fight against Fred Wilson Jr. in June.

Wards trainer, Justin Martinez, also tested positive before the fight in Las Vegas. Ward was forced to back down from the fight due to all boxers being required to pass a coronavirus test in order to compete.

Ward, who has spent recent days training in Las Vegas for Saturdays fight, said he is ready to go this time.

He is very motivated and eager to put on a show for his hometown. He has remained humble and wants to do the talking after the fight.

I feel great, Ward said. Im still out here working. Im very confident. I just got to be humble and bring home the W.

Ward will try to improve on his 4-1-1 record as a pro. He will take on Javier Martinez, who recently turned pro. The fight is set to go four rounds.

When he steps into the ring, Ward said will be more focused than ever before.

Ive been training hard and working hard, Ward said. Im just going to stick to my game plan and just stay focus and keep on pushing.

While training in Las Vegas this week, Ward got the opportunity to visit the Mayweather Boxing Club gym.

Ward said it was a great opportunity to visit the gym, especially since he wants to follow in the footsteps of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.

My turn is going to come one day, Ward said. I just have to be patient with it thats all. I want to learn the business side of this sport.

Wards agent, Thibodaux native Quintarius Queen with CLEVER Sports Entertainment, said it has been inspirational to see how his client has bounced back since testing positive for the coronavirus and missing out on his scheduled fight in June.

Now Queen and the rest of Wards family and friends will get the chance to fight live on national television.

Were all really excited. Everybody has been waiting for this fight to happen. We just feel so good about it, Queen said. Im really confident in Rance, not just because thats my client, but he really looks good. He has gotten better with thework that he has been getting the last couple of weeks. Its been crazy to see his mindset and physical demeanor. Everything about him has changed. The energy is completely different from the last time. This time there is something different about him. He just has to go take care of business.

The main event of Saturdays fight card will feature Jose Ramirez versus Viktor Postol. It is scheduled to be a 12-round fight for the WBC/WBO junior welterweight title.

Open Art Las Vegas offers a new space for creation and community – Las Vegas Weekly

or 23 years, Daniella Etel Courban had a front-row seat in the amphitheater of the human experience while working as an obstetrician-gynecologist. In a May 21 Instagram post (@pineconerevolution), the day that she submitted her final resignation in order to pursue art full time, Courban wrote that she will always be grateful to the thousands of women who allowed me to be there for them both in great moments of joy as well as profound moments of sadness and loss.

Courban is taking all of that hard-earned wisdom, insight and empathy into this next chapter of her life. While the medical doctor has always made her own art on the side and will continue to do so, her new focus is the creation of Open Art Las Vegas, on the second floor of the Arts Factory.

Kids work on personalized mandalas during an Open Art workshop

During the pandemic lockdown, Courban brainstormed about how she might build a business or program Downtown. I thought about different spaces in my life that have been very nourishing the rooms [in my] high schoolI was an art majorwhere people could just drop in and work on projects, Courbon says. I thought, What a wonderful idea to bring that to Las Vegas and have it be for not just teenagers, but for adults.

Thus, Open Art Las Vegas was born with a soft opening in July and a planned full opening on September 1. The light, airy 480-square-foot space serves primarily as a drop-in art studio, where anybody can make art. Im going to have supplies set out at different stations, Courban says, so that they can just drop in to take a break from their regular day and not have to carry anything.

In addition to the unstructured free creative time, Open Art will host workshops and classes for all ages. Due to the pandemic, capacity is limited to six participants. So far, Courban has hosted about seven workshops, along with a few private bookings.

Having lived in Las Vegas for two years, the East Coast transplant has connected quickly with the local arts scene. Courbans desire to help foster community is clear from Open Arts many planned collaborations. Last week, Courban debuted a collaboration with Blue Sky Yoga (on the ground floor of the Arts Factory), in which children participate in an hour of yoga, followed by an hour of art.

On September 26 (7 p.m., $36), artist Stanley Webb will lead a workshop titled Black Arts Movement: The Art of Protest. And in October, Courban will co-lead a monthly multisensory workshop on color with author and Velveteen Rabbit co-owner Christina Dylag. Coming from diverse creative backgrounds, both women will explore the idea of color in experiential ways, Dylag explains. The course will encourage its participants to see and experience color in a new way, Dylag says.

Additional classes include observational drawing for teens, multimedia mandalas, coloring book creation, illustration and gelli-plate printmaking.

Visitors will also have access to Open Arts library of art books and monographs. One of the benefits of having an open space is to be able to share ideas and share art, Courban says. Im trying to bring as many books here as I can in terms of exposing [people] to some artists they might not have heard of. I think thats really exciting.

Open Arts price points further reflect the theme of accessibility to all. Studio time costs $10 per hour, which includes the use of supplies; most workshops run $20. My main goal for this place is to offer a very relaxing, open environment for creativity, Courban says. You dont need to have artistic skills to come here.

UFCs White touts Trump as hard worker on final night of RNC – Las Vegas Review-Journal

WASHINGTON Self-made Las Vegas businessman Dana White, president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, praised his friend, Donald Trump, on the final night of the Republican National Convention.

I am friends of the president, White said. I spoke at this convention four years ago and I am back because I believe in President Trumps leadership.

White, 51, heads the largest mixed martial arts fighting league in the nation. He endorsed Trump in 2016 at the RNC in Cleveland.

His remarks Thursday were taped and aired before live speeches that were delivered on the White House South Lawn.

White and Trump struck up a friendship years ago. In 2001, the UFC held an event at Trumps Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It was dubbed, UFC 30: Battle of the Boardwalk. It was a venue and an event that helped the fledgling UFC under White.

Trump invited White to speak at the RNC in 2016, where the Las Vegas athlete endorsed Trump, who went on to win the presidency.

Whites comments Thursday were part of a videotape on athletes that included images of baseball great Lou Gehrig, golf phenom Tiger Woods, Stanley Cup winning teams and others.

White grew up in Boston and was a boxer before he moved to Las Vegas, where he became a promoter and a partner in the UFC mixed martial arts league.

Earlier this year, Trump tapped White to serve on the White House coronavirus task force. White praised Trump for trying to reintroduce entertainment and encouraging live sporting events during the pandemic.

The UFC was the first to do it, and we are continuing to do it, White said. Now, other sports have joined us.

Still, the Las Vegas businessman conceded, we have a long way to go.

But White said, no one, and I mean no one, is going to out work this guy.

The boxer- turned-promoter becomes the fourth person from Las Vegas to speak at the RNC.

Earlier this week, Trump pardoned convicted bank robber Jon Ponder, who has since been released from incarceration and started a ministry, Hope for Prisoners.

Ponder appeared at the White House with Richard Beasley, the former FBI agent who made the arrest and helped Ponder turn his life around.

The convention kicked off Monday with a prayer by Pastor Norma Urrabazo of the International Church of Las Vegas.

Analyzing the ups and downs from Vegas’ playoff performance thus far – Las Vegas Sun

Jason Franson / The Canadian Press/AP

Chicago goalie Corey Crawford looks back after a goal by Vegas William Carrier (28) during Game 1 of the teams first-round playoffseries.

By Justin Emerson (contact)

Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020 | 2 a.m.

The Golden Knights breezed through the round robin and the first round against the Chicago Blackhawks, winning seven of the eight games and establishing themselves as not just one of the best teams in the Western Conferences, but one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup.

The road only gets harder from here. The Golden Knights have begun Round 2 against the Vancouver Canuckssplitting the first two games ahead of Game 3 on August 27and are three long series victories from hoisting the Cup.

So it seems like a good time to review a few things the Golden Knights have done right in the early goings of the postseason, and a few things theyll need to work on moving forward.

1. Theyve dominated possession. The biggest reason the Golden Knights were able to dispatch the Blackhawks so quickly was that they spent five games treating Chicago like Charlie Brown trying to kick a football. Vegas ended the series plus-4 in goal differential, but other numbers point to a big blowout.

The Golden Knights edge was plus-64 in shots on goal and a staggering plus-100 in shot attempts over the five games. Advanced stats provided by Natural Stat Trick suggest Vegas advantage in expected goals was plus-7 and high-danger scoring chances was plus-24.

If a team has the puck, its going to shoot the puck; and if its shooting the puck, its not defending an attack. The best defense is a good offense, and the Golden Knights showed that in their assault on the Chicago net, and that hasnt slowed against Vancouver, with a plus-48 edge in shot attempts so far.

2. Theyve been comeback kids. During the regular season, the Golden Knights overcame a two-goal deficit to win only twice, and they had never done it in the playoffs prior to this month. But this year through the round robin and the first round against Chicago, the Golden Knights have already done it three times.

Whats especially impressive: the teams against which the first two of those comebacks occurred. In the round robin, the Golden Knights fell behind 3-1 in the third period to Dallas and 2-0 in the second to St. Louis. The Stars and Blues were among the NHLs best in the regular season, in terms of both overall record and in closing out leads.

Overall, the Golden Knights have outscored their opponents 15-5 in the third period and overtime this postseason, a key trait as the playoffs roll on.

3. Their stars are shining bright. Coach Peter DeBoer said it best: This time of year, a teams best players need to be its best players. The Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP rarely goes to depth players, so for a team to make a Cup run, it typically needs its stars to play at their highest level. And thats been the case for the Golden Knights so far through 10 postseason games.

Mark Stone, Reilly Smith and Shea Theodore are all averaging a point-per-game or better during the seasons restart, and Alex Tuch and Jonathan Marchessault are two points back of that pace.

Stone, in particular, has elevated his game when the stakes are highest. Including last years playoffs, Stone has racked up 22 points in 17 VGK playoff games, a per-game pace higher than anyone else with the Golden Knights.

Smith has also been a constant. With 38 points in 37 playoff games as a Golden Knight, hes the only other player to exceed a point per game. Stone, Smith and the rest of the Vegas stars have continued to excel when the games matter most.

4. Theyve showed off their depth. Every team goes through injuries this time of year, but the Golden Knights havent skipped a beat when theyve lost key players. Max Pacioretty and Paul Stastny have missed a combined six games this postseason, and theyve combined to score just seven points in the 14 games theyve played. Yet it hasnt really mattered.

When Stastny went down, Patrick Brown filled in on the fourth line and scored a goal. Chandler Stephenson has been all over the lineup, from third-line center to first-line wing to first-line center to fourth-line center.

And as the stars do their thing at the top of the lineup, so do the players near the bottom. In the Chicago series, the third line of Nick Cousins, Nicolas Roy and Alex Tuch was superb. William Carrier entered the playoffs without a postseason point and already has two game-winning goals.

1. The power play. This was the Golden Knights biggest issue until the series finale against Chicago. In that game, defenseman Alec Martinez scored to tie the game 3-3 before Vegas went on to win, but it was the teams first goal in 10 power-play tries in the series.

The good news is that appears to be less of a systemic issue than a small sample-size one. In the three round-robin games, Vegas went 3-for-12 on the power play, a terrific 33% that, for context, would have led the NHL during the regular season. The Golden Knights are 2-for-7 (28.6%) in two games against Vancouver. Factoring in all 10 postseason games, Vegas has gone 6-for-28 (21.4%), which ranks among the upper half of the playoff teams thus far.

Still, against a porous defense like the Blackhawks, Vegas would have liked more from its power play. It has improved so far in the second round.

2. Finishing chances. The Golden Knights were a far better team than the Blackhawks, yet three of Vegas four wins came by just one goal. All the stats from the positives side of this story should seemingly have added up to a Golden Knights rout. And while a series that ends in five games can be considered a pretty good beatdown, it could have been more lopsided, game by game.

Part of that was Corey Crawford. Chicagos goalie was excellent and kept Vegas from filling the net with pucks, particularly in the Blackhawks lone win. He was the biggest reason Vegas differential between actual goals (15) and expected goals (17.44) was negative, and in Game 4 he held the Golden Knights to one goal, compared to 3.71 expected.

Still, as with the power play, Vegas finishing issues were limited to the Chicago series. In the round robin, the Golden Knights were the NHLs most potent offensive team, and thus far theyve looked very capable of making a deep run.

Sul & Beans

At Shanghai Plaza in Chinatown youll find Sul & Beans, which specializes in Korean bingsoo. For the uninitiated, bingsoo is a bowl of shaved ice topped with various ingredients like condensed milk, fruit and cornflakes. Here youll find heaping bowls with sweet red beans and fresh fruit like watermelon, in flavors such as taro, green tea and chocolate. But stretch your imaginationand your palateand try unfamiliar flavor profiles, at least in treat form, like Earl Grey and black sesame. You might be pleased to discover that dessert need not be cloyingly sweet. 4284 Spring Mountain Road #D103, 702-473-9629.

Black TapsDole Whip Cocktails

There was a time when Dole Whipthat creamy soft-serve pineapple swirl of perfectionwas only available at Disneyland. In fact, its rarity conferred upon it cultlike status, and the lines at the concession stands were legendary. About three years ago, the dairy-free dessert started appearing outside the Magic Kingdom. In town, you can find the adult version at Black Tap in the Venetian, in the form of two cocktails: the Raspberry Lime Margarita, made with Casamigos Blanco, Aperol, lime juice, makrut lime and raspberry Dole Whip; and the Mimosa, with Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, Absolut Vodka, blood orange and orange Dole Whip. Guess theres a new happiest place on Earth. 702-414-2337, blacktap.com.

Somisomi

Its literally impossible to resist the adorable taiyaki waffle cone that houses Somisomis soft serve ice cream. Taiyaki, a Japanese fish-shaped cake, is commonly filled with red bean paste. (Other filling options include Nutella, custard and taro.) Then pick a soft-serve flavormilk, matcha, milk tea, Oreo, horchata or ube (the ubiquitous purple yam from the Philippines), or a weekly-special swirlto add to your sweet-fish creation. The taiyakis are made on the spot, and they come out nice and warm. In fact, theyre so good on their own that you should take some to-go (minus the soft serve) to eat later. 4284 Spring Mountain Road #D104, 702-473-9628.

Searsucker recloses on the Las Vegas Strip, laying off 52 employees – Eater Vegas

Searsucker, the restaurant from Hakkasan Group that offers twists on American classics, reclosed temporarily on August 15 at Caesars Palace.

Hakkasan sent a letter to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation as part of the WARN Act noting that it closed and laid off 52 people, including part-time staff, due to the unforeseen business circumstances caused by the spread of COVID 19, the Governor of Nevadas declaration of emergency and resulting executive orders which have required Searsucker to operate at a reduced capacity, the recommendations and/or orders regarding public gatherings issued by the CDC and various other government agencies and officials, and the resulting unforeseen economic impacts that the foregoing circumstances have caused to our business.

Normally, companies need to give 60 days notice that they are laying off staff, but Hakkasan says, Unfortunately, further advance notice of this cessation of operations was not possible due to the fluid and rapidly evolving nature of the COVID 19 pandemic.

The restaurant does plan to reopen at some point.

The restaurant originally reopened on July 2 at the resort on Thursday through Saturday nights with reduced seating, suggested reservations, and QR codes for accessing the menu. Employees affected included line cooks, servers, dishwashers, prep cooks, bartenders, hosts, and the general manager.
