More than 800 hospitalised in Jordan food poisoning outbreak – The Guardian

A food poisoning outbreak in Jordan has hit more than 800 people and killed a child, all of whom ate cut-price shawarma from a restaurant outside Amman, the health ministry has said.

The owner of the restaurant selling the popular rotisserie meat and bread snacks in the Baqaa district north-west of the capital was arrested, local media reported.

A five-year-old boy died of massive poisoning, the ministry said in a statement.

Health minister Saad Jaber later said 826 people had been hospitalised with poisoning since the first cases were detected on Monday evening.

So far, 321 people are still in hospitals, all in a stable condition apart from four cases who are in intensive care, he told journalists. All those affected said they had eaten meals from the same restaurant.

He said hundreds of extra doctors and nurses had been drafted to various hospitals to treat those affected.

Earlier, the ministry said laboratory tests had revealed bacteria in the meat and poultry.

A special offer of a shawarma meal for one Jordanian dinar (about $1.40), or about half the usual price, had sparked an influx to the restaurant, said local news sites.

Health ministry official Adnan Ishaq told state television that the meat had become infected because it was not refrigerated.

A heatwave has hit Jordan in recent days, with temperatures in Amman exceeding 40C.

The district prosecution said three people from the restaurant, including the owner, had been detained.

Jaber said an investigation was underway. Any offender will be held accountable, regardless of who they are, he said.

Ronaldo is the Michael Jordan of football Lingard likens Man Utd legend to Chicago Bulls icon – Goal.com

The current Red Devils star considers a player he once worked alongside at Old Trafford to be a real icon on the back of his countless successes

Cristiano Ronaldo is the Michael Jordan of football, says Jesse Lingard, with the former Manchester United star and current Juventus talisman held up as a real icon in the sporting world.

Comparisons across sporting fields are difficult to make, with different skill sets required in order to reach the very top of contrasting games.

In NBA circles, Jordan reached the summit over the course of two iconic spells with the Chicago Bulls.

Article continues below

He is rightly considered to be one of the finest sportsmen of all time, not just one of the greatest basketball players.

Few can claim to have scaled such heights in their chosen field, but five-time Ballon dOr winner Ronaldo does form part of that elite group.

Lingard, who once worked alongside the Portuguese at Old Trafford, admits as much, with a big basketball fan placing a Portuguese legend alongside Jordan on any roll of honour.

"I have to say Cristiano Ronaldo," the United and England midfielder told Sky Sports when asked if there are any footballers that can be likened to Jordan.

"Everything he has achieved in his career. He has been at plenty of clubs and won many trophies. I believe he is a real icon of football, the Michael Jordan of football.

"When [Ronaldo] first came to Manchester United, I was 11 or 12. We did a skills DVD and it was him teaching us skills which was good. That was the first time I had seen him. He was young and skinny when he came [to the club].

"I have played against him a few times. Did he give me trouble? No, he wasn't too bad, to be fair! There was one game in pre-season where he came on and you could see the skills and the qualities that he brought."

Basketball is preparing to return after a coronavirus-enforced break, with football having already led the way there.

Lingard will be an interested spectator when the likes of LeBron James and Zion Williamson return to the court, with the 27-year-old one of several avid NBA followers in the world of football.

"Basketball has different tactics and ways of playing and they set up a lot different [to football teams] but [as a player] you can relate. Certain players are small and agile and can bring their teams into games. That's similar to football," added the Red Devils academy graduate.

"When Romelu Lukaku was at Manchester United, he was very keen on basketball. He was in Miami with Paul Pogba playing basketball. I think those two would be up there, for me."

Jordan’s Prime Minister Says His Country Contained COVID-19 By ‘Helping The Weakest’ – NPR

"From day one, any discussion of herd immunity or survival of the fittest or, you know, 'Say farewell to the elderly,' are the things that just did not sound right for us," Jordan's Prime Minister Omar Razzaz tells NPR. "So we went for a very different model in Jordan, based on social solidarity." Jane Arraf/NPR hide caption

"From day one, any discussion of herd immunity or survival of the fittest or, you know, 'Say farewell to the elderly,' are the things that just did not sound right for us," Jordan's Prime Minister Omar Razzaz tells NPR. "So we went for a very different model in Jordan, based on social solidarity."

Jordanian Prime Minister Omar Razzaz sits in the front room of his family home in a middle-class Amman neighborhood of traditional white stone houses with small gardens and low walls. Unusually, in a region where senior officials typically live in gated compounds far from public view, the residential street has been kept open to traffic to minimize disruption to Razzaz's neighbors.

Razzaz, an MIT and Harvard-educated economist, was appointed by Jordan's King Abdullah II to head a new government two years ago, following anti-government protests that were sparked by IMF-mandated tax increases seen as bypassing the rich. Although he'd served previously as education minister, Razzaz was seen as a relative outsider.

The small, resource-poor kingdom is surrounded by dangers from neighboring countries: a war in Syria, conflict between the U.S. and Iran in Iraq, and Israeli plans to annex parts of the West Bank it occupies something Jordan says poses a danger to the entire region.

But those issues have taken a back seat to controlling the coronavirus a feat Jordan has accomplished with an early and severe lockdown. The country of roughly 10 million has registered 1,131 coronavirus cases, with 11 deaths.

Razzaz sees vulnerable groups in other countries paying a disproportionate price for policies that don't prioritize them, and says Jordan's approach from the start was to protect the most vulnerable.

"From day one, any discussion of herd immunity or survival of the fittest or, you know, 'Say farewell to the elderly,' are the things that just did not sound right for us," Razzaz tells NPR. "So we went for a very different model in Jordan, based on social solidarity, in fact, helping the weakest. We did everything we can to make sure our children, our elderly, our refugees you know, the haves and the have-nots are protected."

In mid-March, Jordan was one of the first countries in the region to shut its airports and borders for all but essential goods. Arriving passengers were sent into compulsory quarantine. All but emergency workers and security forces were confined to their homes, with even grocery stores shut and the army distributing bread to poor neighborhoods.

The government cut public sector salaries and allowed businesses to reduce workers' wages, but banned them from laying off employees.

Razzaz says in the last four months, almost half of Jordan's population received some form of government assistance.

This week, the country announced it would reopen its airport to flights from a dozen countries where coronavirus rates are also low. With no cases of local transmission on most days, Jordan has stopped enforcing mask wearing and reopened restaurants and shopping malls.

Razzaz says industry production is now back to pre-coronavirus standards, and Jordan is exporting pharmaceuticals and food to other countries.

Jordan took a chance with the lockdown, he says, but felt it had little choice, given the prospect of its health care system being overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases.

"When we took the steps that we took, we did that not because we were certain about the outcomes. So there's always hindsight ... But we're very, very glad we did what we did. And a lot of countries that waited longer, including the U.S., ... are having a harder time containing the coronavirus," he says.

Razzaz and health officials note Jordan remains on guard for a possible resurgence of the virus as its airport reopens.

The longer-term challenge is an already fragile economy in which unemployment is rising sharply. Tens of thousands of Jordanians have lost their jobs in the Arab Gulf states, as those economies decline due to the pandemic and a plunge in oil prices.

The official unemployment rate for the first quarter of the year had already topped 19%. Some economists expect the real rate could reach 30% by the end of the year, with many of the unemployed young people.

Razzaz says, though, he is not worried by the prospect of renewed demonstrations that could be sparked by the economic crisis.

"While some countries worry a lot about social unrest, we see it as people expressing views about that hardship," he says. "We're going to be proactive with employment and job creation. And if you get frustrated and want to shout, we have a constitution and set of laws and institutions that allow that to happen in democratic ways."

The other wild card facing the kingdom is Israel's annexation threat. Jordan, along with Egypt, is one of only two Arab countries in the region to have signed a peace treaty with Israel. Jordan's king says he might suspend the 26-year-old treaty if Israel takes unilateral steps to claim sovereignty over parts of the West Bank.

Israel cites Jewish ties and a strategic need for it, but most of the international community opposes such a move, which could doom Palestinian hopes for an independent state.

Jordan, where a majority of citizens are of Palestinian origin, would be the country most affected by Israel's move, and instability could ripple across the region.

Razzaz says Jordan has not changed its insistence on the need for an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

"If you don't provide a just solution for the Palestinian people and sovereignty, you are pushing them and the region towards despair and extremism. So will there be conflict under such conditions? Yes, there will be, definitely," he says. "I think what His Majesty and Jordan have been doing is sounding the alarm bells."

July 29, 2020

On June 5, Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand committed to donate $100 million over 10 years to directly impact the fight against systemic racism. These donations will focus on three priority areas:

As part of bringing this commitment to life, Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand today announced three initial partners that will receive donations to support their efforts to combat Black voter suppression.

Im all in with Jordan Brand, the Jordan family and our partners, who share a commitment to address the historical inequality that continues to plague Black communities in the U.S., saysMichael Jordan. There is a long history of oppression against Black Americans that holds us back from full participation in American society. We understand that one of the main ways we can change systemic racism is at the polls. We know it will take time for us to create the change we want to see, but we are working quickly to take action for the Black communitys voice to be heard.

Partners were selected based on their ability to take action that can create impact now. Donations of $1 million each to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and the Formerly Incarcerated & Convicted People and Families Movement (FICPFM), and $500,000 to Black Voters Matter to support reformative practices that drive real change in the Black community.

The $100 million commitment was just the start. We are moving from commitment to action. Our initial partners can directly impact the social and political well-being of the Black community, saysCraig Williams, President of Jordan Brand. We will have a disciplined focus on social justice, economic justiceand education, as the most effective ways for us to eliminate the systemic racism that remains in society.

The work of these partners will focus on cities and states where Black people are underrepresented in registration and turnout numbers, relative to their share of the overall population.

Im all in with Jordan Brand, the Jordan Family and our partners, who share a commitment to address the historical inequality that continues to plague Black communities in the U.S.

Through the existing Jordan Wings Program, Jordan Brand has been focused on providing access to education, mentorship and opportunity for Black youth. These existing commitments will continue in parallel to these efforts, with increasing grants to U.S.-based Wings partners who are fighting to help youth overcome the obstacles of systemic racism in Black communities.

Black Voters Matter (Capacity Building Institute) has been successful in supporting policies that expand access to the ballot, including the restoration of voting rights to people who have been incarcerated, and the development of network of grassroots organizations that activate Black voters. Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand will support Black Voters Matter in its efforts to register and turn out voters in the upcoming elections. For more information, visit bvmcapacitybuilding.org.

Formerly Incarcerated and Convicted Peoples and their Families Movement (FICPFM)FICPFM supports formerly incarcerated individuals who are returning to society, to promote civic engagement, help them meet voter registration eligibility requirements and shift the dominant narrative on who convicted people and their loved ones are. Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand will support FICPFM to help restore the rights of disenfranchised voters. For more information, visit ficpfm.org.

LDF, which was founded by Thurgood Marshall before he became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, is the nations premier civil rights law organization. It employs litigation, advocacy and public education to advance its mission to achieve racial justice, equality and an inclusive society. Over the past 80 years, LDF has fought for structural changes to expand democracy and eliminate disparities. Through its many transformative cases, such as Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned the separate but equal doctrine that underpinned legal segregation, LDF has changed the very fabric of American democracy. Today, LDF fights to expand and protect civil rights so that our nations promise of racial equity and justice can become a reality for all Americans. For more information, visit naacpldf.org.

Scottie Pippen downplays Michael Jordan rift after ‘Last Dance’ – ESPN

Scottie Pippen says he has talked with Michael Jordan since "The Last Dance" documentary aired in the spring, and he downplayed any rift between the retired Chicago Bulls stars.

"Why would I be offended by anything that happened 30 years ago?" Pippen said.

Jordan widely praised Pippen in the documentary that chronicled the Bulls' 1990s dynasty as the best teammate he ever had. But Jordan called out Pippen in the second episode for making a "selfish" decision to delay offseason surgery on a ruptured tendon in his ankle until after the start of the 1997-98 season. Jordan said in the documentary he didn't understand Pippen's decision.

1 Related

There were reports that Pippen was unhappy with his portrayal in the documentary, but he said Tuesday, "I wasn't upset about it." The documentary also included Pippen's refusal to enter Game 3 of the 1994 Eastern Conference semifinals in the final seconds.

"It didn't bother me at all," Pippen said. "It was an opportunity for our younger generation that hadn't seen or knew anything about basketball in the '90s."

The series aired over five consecutive Sunday nights in April and May and included never-before-seen footage from the 1997-98 season, when the team chased its sixth championship in a span of eight years.

Pippen, 54, won six NBA championships with the Bulls, was a seven-time All-Star and won two Olympic gold medals. He's now an NBA analyst, primarily for The Jump, an ESPN studio show.

He picked the Los Angeles Lakers as the favorite to emerge out of Florida the NBA champion.

"If you wanted to pick one, I'd say whichever team LeBron James is on," Pippen said. "The fact that his experience, his ability to pull a team together, the ability to be dominant -- he's the most dominant player in the game right now with Kevin Durant not being in the game. "

The documentary was a ratings winner when sports was on hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. ESPN and Nielsen said that the final two episodes of 'The Last Dance" averaged 5.6 million viewers.

Jordan: We’re all buzzing to be back – Blackburn rovers

Rovers Ladies captain Saffron Jordan says the team are enjoying their return to training and are now fully focused on building on last seasons seventh place finish.

With the new FA Womens Championship campaign set to get underway on September 5/6, Rovers have stepped up their preparations by moving into Phase Two of training, whilst still adhering to the COVID-19 protocols.

And Jordan, who scored six goals in 2019-20, revealed it has been a welcome change to finally get back on the grass over the last few weeks.

It feels like forever since any of us played with each other and I had to reintroduce myself to a couple of people, she joked.

Its been strange, but our General Manager put it all [in place], weve had an itinerary and everything has run very smoothly. The girls have cooperated and everything has been up to scratch.

Its just like being a young kid at Christmas again, everyone is buzzing about, from a distance obviously, but theres a buzz around the camp and its really good to get back into it and be out on the pitch playing.

A period of lockdown brought challenges for the team, who were initially in limbo over whether the 2019-20 season would restart.

Jordan added: It was frustrating, but we kept in touch with a lot of Zoom calls. Our Strength and Conditioning Coach sent out programmes and we all kept up to date with it, had competitions sending in our times and what distance we did over the week.

So it was interactive even though we werent actually interacting, just to keep up over the off-season.

As long as it was, that part kept us going, [gave us] a bit of momentum and now were back in, it has all been worth it.

The Rovers skipper also reflected on the Blues first season in the second tier and talked targets for the campaign ahead, both individually and as a team.

How well we did last season, it cut off at the wrong time because we were coming into good form and getting a lot more comfortable with the standard of the league.

For our first season, finishing seventh was not bad at all. I think we would have snapped anyones hands off [for that] at the start of the season.

But this year, we want to build on it and improve. I think weve got some new players coming in who are going to add some strength into the numbers.

And a lot of the returning players are consistent and they know what it means to play for Blackburn Rovers.

I just always want to improve, thats my main target and helping the team to the best of my ability, thats my main focus.

27th anniversary of death of James Jordan in Lumberton – WBTW

LUMBERTON, N.C. (WBTW) Thursday, July 23, 2020 marks 27 years since the shooting death of James Jordan, NBA star Michael Jordans father, in Lumberton. Former Robeson County D.A. Johnson Britt spoke with News 13s Lacey Lee on his memories of the trial.

Its the one case that will stay with me forever, Britt says.

Jordan was traveling from Charlotte to Wilmington when he stopped on the side of the road in Lumberton to take a nap. Thats when Larry Demery and Daniel Green shot, killed and robbed Jordan.

They resorted to committing crimes and they went on a string of robberies this being the third string, Britt continues.

Demery and Green took all of Jordans possessions including his phone and NBA rings gifted from his son, Michael Jordan. The two then dumped James Jordans body in a swamp in McColl. His body was found there 11 days later.

This is a case that its legacy will live with this community literally forever. You know when you go places and they ask you where are you from and you say Lumberton, North Carolina and they go, why do I know that? and thats when you say, thats where James Jordan diedand its not a good legacy in that sense but thats what a lot of people remember us by, Britt says.

Both Demery and Green were convicted of 1st-degree murder and armed robbery and each got life sentences. However, Britt says Demery is eligible for parole. Count on News13 for more updates.

RED JACKETS MOVE UP FROM CLASS AA TO REGION 2-AAAA

COVID-19 pushed back Muscogee County summer conditioning a month in comparison to other GHSA schools, but now teams like the Jordan Red Jackets are right on pace practicing in their helmets. A lot of these players, especially the seniors, are excited to be back on the field.

I was scared at first, said Jordan senior quarterback and wide receiver Hayden Dixon. Thinking I wasnt going to have my senior season because for all of us out here it means a lot to us.

Jordan High is focused on intensity and hard work this offseason under third-year Head Coach Joe Kegler.

Were just trying to up the intensity, up the togetherness and up the family atmosphere around here, said Kegler. Were trying to get better everyday in all aspects of the game.

The Red Jackets finished last season (0-10) in Class AA, and now theyre moving up to 2-AAAA. Jordan joins Carver, Hardaway, Columbus, Kendrick, LaGrange, Spencer, Shaw and Troup County.

You get to compete against some familiar teams and some familiar faces, so I think its good for the fans, said Kegler.

It will make it better. More intense, and the games will be faster and better, said sophomore wide receiver and safety Tycen McDaniels.

Jordans three-way quarterback battle features two seniors and a junior. Their veteran leadership, which includes nine seniors, and experience will help give the Red Jackets an edge.

I feel like this year we are going to have a more tight-knit group, said Dixon. More family-oriented. We struggled years before with that.

Well be older with more experience, stronger and faster, said McDaniels. Well be able to keep up with everybody.

Weve got a good group of young guys and older guys who played some last year, said Kegler. Were anxious to put the pads on, strap it up and see what we look like.

UNICEF and Altibbi partner to provide health services for youth in Jordan [EN/AR] – Jordan – ReliefWeb

Empowering youth in Jordan to lead healthier lives

AMMAN, 27 July 2020 UNICEF and the telehealth platform Alitibbi have announced a new partnership to empower youth in Jordan to lead healthier lives through improved access to quality healthcare, information on disease prevention, including COVID-19, and scaled-up mental health and wellbeing services.

The partnership will provide 3,000 young people with access to real-time consultations with medical professionals at no cost. Telehealth is a future-ready, innovative method of health provision that can improve access to healthcare for the most vulnerable youth, including those living in remote areas without access to specialized medical services.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the critical need to provide reliable, quality healthcare to young people to support their physical and mental health, said Ettie Higgins, Deputy Representative, UNICEF Jordan. UNICEFs partnership with Altibbi will empower young women and men, who are at the most critical juncture in their lives, with the services and information they need to be healthy and successful.

"This partnership truly brings the power of smart technology to provide the youth with remote and fully private access to a great network of board-certified doctors with reliable scientific content 24/7 that allows the youth to totally defeat taboos and misconceptions. This partnership will increase health literacy by covering a spectrum of the most relevant topics that include COVID-19 and mental health," said Jalil Al Labadi, Chief Executive Officer, Altibbi.

Altibbi, a Jordanian social enterprise, is already supporting national efforts to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus through the running of the 111 COVID-19 response hotline, handling 10,000 telehealth consultations per day.

The initial 3,000 young people who will benefit from the telehealth partnership are students enrolled in UNICEFs Amaluna economic engagement programme and Syrian refugee volunteers. Each will receive telehealth consultations, informational bundles on COVID-19, mental health and other relevant health topics, and yearly in-person medical consultations.

The initiative is part of UNICEFs efforts to support young people to successfully transition to adulthood. Telehealth services are key in ensuring young people can successfully transition to the labour market, as the most vulnerable may lack access to tools and information to complete medical clearances necessary for employment, and to improve the participation of young women in the labour force.

Jordan Ayew crowned Crystal Palace Player of the Season – Goal.com

The Ghana international has been rewarded for his impressive campaign with the Eagles

Jordan Ayew has been crowned Crystal Palace Player of the Season after his outstanding performances in the 2019-20 campaign.

Ayew saw off competition from Vicente Guaita and Gary Cahill to clinch the award after earning 37 per cent of the total votes from almost 6,000 club supporters.

It was an eventful Tuesday evening for the Black Stars forward who contributed nine goals and two assists for the Eagles this term. They ended the Premier League campaign in the 14th spot after a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Ayew was also named the Players' Player of the Season and his 87th-minute winning strike against West Ham United back in October was awarded the Goal of the Season.

After receiving the three awards, the 28-year-old paid tribute to former Marseille President, Pape Diouf who died in March after battling with coronavirus.

Ive worked so hard to get into the team and I think the first season I came into this team wasnt the best but the club had faith in me, the club wanted me to stay and I wanted to stay as well, Ayew was quoted by the club website.

"I had the desire to have a better season and things have gone so well. Im just grateful.

"I want to thank everyone at the football club; I want to thank the fans especially, theyve been massive for us this season, for me especially theyve been massive. Id like to thank all the people that supported me within the difficult moments that I had in my football career.

"When I have this type of award I just think of my family and obviously of the fans. And one man thats been so influential in my football career: thats [mentor and former Olympique de Marseille president] Pape Diouf. I lost him within the period of COVID and he passed away, I wish he was still here so I could present him this."

During the season, Ayew was named Crystal Palace Player of the Month twice and he scooped 10 man-of-the-match awards.

Roy Hodgson, in his remarks, described the Ghana international as an unbelievable player and also reserved praise for his work ethics.

"[Jordan] is an unbelievable enthusiast and hard worker, somebody really who never falls below a certain level of performance, someone who never misses a training session and is always lively and alert in each training session, irrespective if its the day after coming back after a long journey or after having a day or two off, the managersaid.

"He's made great strides going forward. When he came to us, he showed a lot of qualities but I think the qualities he possesses he really has worked on and improved... Well done, Jordan."

Jordan Says Detained Union Leaders Sought to Wreak Havoc in Country – The New York Times

AMMAN Jordan said on Sunday it had detained opposition union leaders to prevent a campaign of protests that would have paralysed essential government services as the country grapples with the economic blow from the coronavirus crisis.

The country's security force on Saturday arrested 13 leading members of the Teachers Syndicate on charges of incitement, corruption, criminal activities and financial irregularities in a surprise crackdown on one of the country's largest grassroots movements that has become a leading source of dissent.

"The teachers union were threatening again to stage protests, sit-ins and strikes that harm the state's essential services and their functioning," Amjad al Adailah, cabinet minister and government spokesman, told reporters.

Officials said those being questioned included union leader Nasser Nawasreh and others who last year organised a one-month strike over pay, the longest and one of the most disruptive public sector strikes in the country's history.

The government reluctantly agreed to a deal last October that ended the strike, which included agreeing to a 50% pay rise to come into effect this year in a bid to avoid a deeper political crisis.

In recent weeks, the 100,000-strong union has accused the government of failing to honour the deal.

The government postponed all pay hikes for the public sector saying state finances were under severe strain.

Security forces have deployed around main government buildings where unions have called for protests in coming days in defiance of a government ban, witnesses said.

Some activists have also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Omar al Razzaz.

Razzaz said in televised remarks on Sunday he would not tolerate any attempt to break the law by any "group, political party or union that sought to confiscate the rights of others."

Some officials have accused union leaders of harbouring the Islamist opposition's political agenda. The union says this accusation is part of a government smear campaign.

Rights activists have accused the government of using draconian powers under emergency laws enacted last March to curb the pandemic as an excuse to limit civic and political rights. Scores of activists have been arrested over comments on social media.

Sieger: What was the big deal about The Jordan Rules? – Vacaville Reporter

The Last Dance (now on Netflix), the docuseries about Michael Jordans last season with the Chicago Bulls, mentions a controversial book, The Jordan Rules, which was published in 1992 about the 1991-92 Bulls season. Controversial because it painted an unflattering portrait of Jordan as a teammate.

But it was actually the medias reaction to the book which set off the firestorm, as well as condemnations from people who hadnt even read the book.

After watching The Last Dance (which I heartily recommend), I decided to read The Jordan Rules: The Inside Story of a Turbulent Season with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, written by Sam Smith, who covered the Bulls for The Chicago Tribune.

And I was shocked shocked at why this book was considered so evil by so many at the time.

Unlike Jim Boutons Ball Four, the book does not delve into the personal affairs of the players. It just chronicles their interactions with Jordan and each other over the course of the season. It wasnt a hit-and-run piece, as Smith traveled with the team all season and continued to do so for years to come.

In an introduction to a later edition of the book, Smith wrote, I told every player about the book before I wrote it, although Jordan later said he didnt recall that. I sat down with every one of them at lunch or dinner and explained this was a book about basketball, not private lives. I remain proud of the book because it didnt hurt anyone in that way. And to this day I remain friendly with most of those players.

Apparently it is almost impossible to write a book like this without creating misunderstanding. When John Feinstein wrote A Season on the Brink about Bobby Knights 1985-86 season with Indiana, Knight gave Feinstein permission to immerse himself in the program, giving him the chance to attend meetings and practices, to travel with the team, and even to sit on the bench during games.

Nevertheless, Knight complained to the Chicago Sun-Times that Feinstein wrote the book completely outside the parameters that were set. The book was supposed to be about the players, but it was about me, starting with the cover and going right on through.

Feinstein claimed that Knight knew from the outset that he would be the focus.

Similarly, Jordan was upset with the book.

There was no question he was angry then, wrote Smith, though I felt it was more because of the negative publicity from portions of the book that were taken out of context by others. My guess is Jordan never read the book. But people who read it now ask me why it was such a big deal then.

Count me among that number. The book is tame to the point of being PG by todays tell-all standards. It is well-written and fair. It paints all the players, including Jordan, as merely human and simply portrays the inevitable conflicts and jealousies that arise when 12 people are so close to one another day in and day out for an entire basketball season.

All Smith did was write about the players thoughts and feelings, which they freely shared with him.

Theres always been this mystery and guessing game about The Jordan Rules,' wrote Smith. Who was the source, the Deep Throat. Ive always hated that since the implication is someone handed me all this information and I sat around and just waited There was no secret source. Everyone was the source.

The title of the book conveys the fact that Jordan was treated differently from the other players. Looking back, that was no great revelation.

As Smith explained, The Jordan Rules wasnt a difficult story to get if you looked. For several years, players would tell me something about how Jordan had held someone up to ridicule, or skipped a mandatory workout of some sort. Phil (coach Phil Jackson) had explained publicly, which was part of his brilliance, that the pretty girl gets kissed. In other words, some people just get better treatment because society sees them as more special than others.

At the time, the public didnt want to burst the bubble of the Michael Jordan mystique. Everyone wanted to be like Mike. But Smith felt he might have done MJ a favor.

Michael Jordan had been marketed as perfect, Smith wrote. And he looked the part with that magnificent smile and spectacular game. I always figured The Jordan Rules took some pressure off him by showing he wasnt perfect and he didnt have to be, and that the fans will still love him. Not that the book did him any favors. But he always worried about being unloved and unpopular, and here I was writing about him being a real guy, hardly a criminal but difficult at times. How dare me! And you know what, they still loved him. Maybe even more.

The Jordan Rules is well worth the read and a great companion to The Last Dance. I felt the docuseries glossed over some of Jordans faults and that the book was more honest and less biased. In any case, both are great antidotes to the boredom of sheltering in place.

Egypt hopeful for more meetings with Jordan, Iraq on regional issues – The Jerusalem Post

Egypt is intensely involved in regional diplomacy, according to a recent report about the possibility of more Egypt-Jordan-Iraq tripartite meetings.Last year, the foreign ministers of the three countries came together for discussions reportedly held in Baghdad, Amman and Cairo in March, August and November, respectively.Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, are the key to this growing relationship. Shoukry reached out to Jordan in recent weeks about support for Egypts views on Libya.Cairo opposes increased escalation in Libya caused by Turkey sending Syrian mercenaries and Turkish drones to the North African country. Russia has also increased its presence in Libya. Egypts parliament has supported Egyptian leader Abdel Fatah al-Sisis redline in Sirte that is designed to deter Turkish aggression. But Egypt knows it needs more support in the region. It already has Greece, Cyprus, France, Saudi Arabia and the UAE on its side. But most of these players want someone else to be the muscle in Libya. Iraq would be a helpful piece of the puzzle, but it is also indebted to Iran, as well as being infiltrated by Iranian-backed militias and intelligence agents.Nevertheless, Iraq is traditionally a key part of the Arab world and Arab League. In this context, Baghdad, Cairo and Damascus are the traditional centers of power in the region.Even though power has shifted in favor of Tehran, Ankara and the Gulf in recent years, the creation of a Jordan-Egypt-Iraq bloc on certain issues can aid in fighting terrorism and on energy and other deals, the foreign ministers think. That is at the heart of attempts to encourage Iraqs new prime minister, Mustafa Kadhimi, to visit Riyadh, following his recent visit to Tehran, and also to open up more engagement between Cairo and Baghdad. The concept of tripartite meetings of the foreign ministers is designed to more closely coordinate efforts on Libya and other issues, according to the Gulfs Al-Ain News. For Shoukry, this would be a crowning achievement. He has been foreign minister since 2014 and was a key player prior to that in Washington. He has sought to increase Egypts role in the region at a difficult time, during the end of the Arab Spring, and transition back to stability. His Jordanian counterpart was appointed in 2017, while their Iraqi counterparts have been dealing with more chaos at home to try to project Iraqs power abroad. Northern Iraq is partly occupied by Turkey, and Iran plays a similar role in other areas of Iraq.Safadi has been trying to deal with fallout from the Trump administrations Deal of the Century and balance Jordans precarious position between Israel, the Palestinians, a recovering Syria and an Iraq that still has instability. It thus falls on Egypt to be the main initiator and driver of this relationship. In this context, Egypt hopes its tripartite meetings can bring more stability to the Arab world and challenge the role of Turkey in Libya.

Colts excited to get Jordan Glasgow on special teams – Colts Wire

The Indianapolis Colts made a selection in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft on linebacker Jordan Glasgow with the expectation that he wont be a major part of the defensive side of the ball.

While the roster and depth chart will show that Glasgow is a part of the linebacker corps, the Colts arent planning to use him in that phase of the game.

Instead, they envision the Michigan product having a massive impact on special teams. And they believe that impact could be immediate.

Hes earned everything hes gotten every step of the way. He walks on at Michigan, carves out a captain roll on special teams, and then earned a starting job as a senior. I mean, hes earned everything, every step of the way in his career, said director of pro personnel Kevin Rogers, via Colts.com. I mean, hes a guy that doesnt even need football. Hes a 3.6 GPA guy. He could make money elsewhere, but hes a tough, gritty guy. You put on the tape, hes blocking kicks, he makes almost every tackle on every unit. I mean, hes a guy thats going to be exciting to watch in the third phase this year.

The Colts have a deep linebacker corps entering the 2020 season. Some would argue that its the deepest position on the entire roster. With an All-Pro talent in Darius Leonard, high-quality starters in Anthony Walker and Bobby Okereke and the upside of E.J. Speed, this group has very little question marks.

They even get strong special teams production from Zaire Franklin and Matthew Adamsthe two players likely competing with Glasgow for the final spot in the linebacker room.

But the potential for Glasgow on special teams is extremely high. The Colts mentioned he has Pro Bowl potential in that area, but general manager Chris Ballard also made note of what Glasgow brings to the locker room.

So I have a good friends son that I had seen this kid before, when I was going into Michigan about four years ago, as a freshman. The son said, Man, this guys an unbelievable special teams player. Then I really started watching him. And over the years you see this kid whos a walk-on, he earns a scholarship and hes doing it by playing on teams, and then he works himself up to be a starter on defense, said Ballard. You know, Glasgows the exact kind of make-up that we want in a player, and at one point I said, You know what? Our special teams coaches loved him, I loved him, and I said, Were taking him. And this guy stands for what we want. Now hes gotta prove it at our level, but I think he will.

There are going to be several position battles to watch during this unique training camp, and Glasgow has a chance to carve out an immediate role on special teamsan area hes shown to thrive during his days at Michigan.

GOAT of GOATs Final: Who is the Greatest Athlete Of All Time Wayne Gretzky or Michael Jordan? – Yahoo Sports

Who is the GOAT of GOATs? The greatest of the greatests? An answer to the question: Who is the greatest athlete of all time?

Weve asked you to vote, and now were down to the final two: Wayne Gretzky vs. Michael Jordan.

When you vote, keep this in mind: Its impossible to compare players of different sports. What we can attempt to determine is this: Who dominated their competition the most? Thats ultimately the question were trying to answer here.

So lets get to it to determine who is The GOAT of GOATS.

(Amber Matsumoto/Yahoo Sports illustration)

The case for Wayne Gretzky

The Great One racked up 2,857 points in his 20-year career and would own the NHLs all-time scoring record even if you took away his career goals (894) and counted only his assists (1,963). A nine-time MVP, Gretzky was so brilliant he cast a shadow on three men who would otherwise have great NHL GOAT cases: Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux.

Kevin Kaduk

The case for Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan was so good his claim to the NBAs GOAT throne is still gaining momentum almost a quarter-century after his retirement from theChicago Bulls. The Last Dance documentary reminded us how thoroughly he eviscerated the league. Jordan went 6-for-6 when a title was on the line, winning Finals MVP each time. He added five regular-season MVPs, three more scoring titles than anyone else in history and a Defensive Player of the Year award. No amount of honors or statistics can properly calculate how much fear Jordans blend of skill, athleticism and confidence struck into opponents hearts when the game mattered most.

Thursday marks 27th anniversary of death of James Jordan in Lumberton – WSPA 7News
