Exploring the vast, rolling hills of the Faroe Islands – Far Out Magazine

TheFaroe Islands, aNorth Atlantic Island group located betweenNorwayandIcelandis a rough, rugged and unconventionally impressive location.

The cluster of islands, inhabited primarily by sheep and puffins, has developed into Scandinavias ultimate off-the-beaten-track destination. Despite being at the northern tip of Scotland, travel to the Faroe Islands has never been the most convenient.

However, improved links to the 18 islands has been vastly improved in recent years and the uncompromisingly, sharp cliffs, glaciated valleys, rolling hills and waterfalls has allowed the Faroe Islands to develop into the alternative nature holiday.

Part of the Kingdom of Denmark, the island has a population of around 50,000 people, is self-governed, has its own parliament and has a fishing industry that shows no sign of slowing down.

Whether youre hiking to the famous Kallurin lighthouse, taking the ferry from Trshavn to Nlsoy, heading to Gjogv or exploring the isolated little village of Saksun, the Faroe Islands has an expanding list of options.

To give you a taste of what the Faroe Islands has to offer, photographer Annie Spratt headed to the location to explore:

Daufuskie Island offers a taste of the simple life in the Lowcountry – Atlanta Journal Constitution

After disembarking from the ferry and getting my golf cart (essential for getting around on the island), I soon began to experience the simple life I had heard about. This is a place where people make turn signals by hand because blinkers dont come standard on golf carts. Roads are generically named for whats on them: School Road, Beach Road. One-word hand-painted signs in the shape of arrows are tacked to poles at every intersection leading the way to Coffee, Church, Lighthouse, and so forth, making it fairly easy to get around without a map.

Visitors can stay overnight in Haig Point Lighthouse. Contributed by Holger Opderbeck

The Haig Point Lighthouse at the north end of the island is one of two historic lighthouses on Daufuskie, the other being the Bloody Point Lighthouse at the south end, now housing a small but worthwhile history museum. The one on Haig Point was constructed in 1873 and remained in use until 1934. In the 1980s the International Paper Corporation, which owned the property at that time, restored the tower and the keepers quarters underneath. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982; in 1986 the U.S. Coast Guard authorized its re-lighting as a private aid to navigation in Calibogue Sound between Daufuskie Island and Hilton Head Island.

Today the lighthouse is part of Haig Point, one of three planned communities on Daufuskie bordering the Historic District. Haig Point is a private residential community, but visitors can book a Stay and Play package with accommodations in the historic Strachan Mansion (circa 1910) or the lighthouse. The package includes a golf cart, ferry tickets, a round of golf or a horseback ride on the beach, morning coffee and pastries, and access to Haig Point amenities such as tennis and a private beach.

I opted for the lighthouse because I wanted to stay on a solitary point overlooking the water. The front porch has one of the best views on the island. I spent a good deal of time in a rocking chair watching the dolphins surface and the boat traffic come and go through the sound. The tour boats would idle offshore gawking at the old lighthouse. I could hear the narration over the loudspeakers and see people looking through binoculars, probably wondering who I was sitting on the porch staring back and waving.

The lighthouse has been restored to look as it did in the 1890s. The attention to detail is striking, right down to the locks on the doors and the lamps hanging on the wall. In a closet, plexiglass covers interior woodwork with inscriptions from workers dated June 1873.

Tempting as it was to hang out on the point, the Historic District was calling, and I wanted to discover some more history. The island was once home to large indigo and cotton plantations. During the Civil War, the planter class abandoned Daufuskie. The former slaves stayed behind, isolated from the outside world, maintaining their own distinct Gullah culture and eventually making a living from selling oysters. Contamination from the Savannah River wiped out that industry in the mid 20th century, but many of the cottages from the oystering days still exist. These are the classic Daufuskie houses set back in the ancient live oaks dangling Spanish moss on sandy roads.

I met Sallie Ann Robinson, a sixth-generation Gullah native of Daufuskie, in front of one of these old houses near the Mary Field School, the schoolhouse where Pat Conroy taught. The first thing Robinson showed me was a Gullah version of the bible titled De Nyew Testament. Next, she handed me a copy of Oprah Winfreys magazine that included a story about her. Then she showed me a Gullah cookbook penned by her with a foreword by Pat Conroy. Robinson was one of Conroys students at the schoolhouse in 1969. He changed her name in the book just like he had changed the name of the island.

"I'm Ethel," she said with a smile.

Sallie Ann conducts the Authentic Gullah Tour in association with the non-profit Daufuskie Island Gullah Heritage Society. The organization works to help restore the old Gullah homes and maintain the centuries-old cemeteries. Robinsons three-hour tour through the Historic District provides a unique first-person perspective on Gullah heritage and other aspects of the islands history. Shell drive you in her air-conditioned bus (a rare automobile on the island) to the major historic sites and regale you with stories about growing up on Daufuskie before it became an off-the-radar vacation destination. She also talks a lot about Conroy, who she remained close with up until his death in 2016. The two often appeared at book signings and literary events together.

They loved to have the two of us together because we were always so much fun, she said.

A lot has changed on Daufuskie over the years, but some things remain the same. Driving back to the lighthouse in my golf cart I passed the schoolhouse and the church Robinson attended as a child. The schoolhouse is now home to a coffee shop and a clothing store, but the circa-1884 First Union African Baptist Church remains active and is still attended regularly by Robinson.

Islands of Ireland: Small islands, big ambitions – Irish Examiner

It is a long way from the Clew Bay island of Inishlyre to the corridors of power in Brussels, but for the secretary of the European Small Islands' Network (ESIN), the occasional trip there is vital.

The journey involves a half-hour on a boat to Rosmoney Pier, Co Mayo, by road to Westport, and then a further drive to Knock or Dublin to catch a flight to Belgium.

American-born Rhoda Twombly has been living on the island for 20 years, having previously run Joe Wattys pub on Inishmore, Co Galway.

Rhoda is now one of only three residents on Inishlyre, and this voluntary post keeps her very involved in the destiny of Irish and European islands.

ESIN was set up in 2001, with Ireland a leading advocate, along with Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden, and Scotland. The group represents 360,000 islanders on 1,640 small islands. To qualify for inclusion in its remit, an island must have fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. (Some Finnish islands have only one resident.)

While Comhdhil Oilein na hireann (Irish Islands Federation) is concerned with specifically Irish islands, ESINs bailiwick is the smaller islands of the continent.

It overlaps with Comhdhil, when bigger issues come to the fore, such as major infrastructural damage from the likes of Hurricane Ophelia in 2017.

For smaller issues, Irish islanders will go to Comhdhil for help in contacting the relevant people in government. If it is a big issue, we will pass it on to Comhdhil and get them to lobby as well, says Rhoda.

Comhdhil has been reaching out to Europe much more of late and supplements ESINs connections with the European Commission and the parliament.

ESIN is constantly networking to get funding, programming, and trying to get the small islands voices heard, says Rhoda. Her job is to persuade, solicit, and otherwise cajole help from the powers that be for European islanders. And her armoury in the digital age now includes Zoom meetings.

Irish islands are considered very small on the European scale, she says.

"We have defined 'small islands' as islands with populations of fewer than 5,000, with no permanent connection to the mainland so anywhere from one person up to several thousand. You get an awful lot of archipelagos, especially up in Scandinavia, she says.

A few years ago, Inishlyre hosted Comhdhils AGM, with 300 delegates a considerable achievement for an island. ESIN alternates the location for its AGM: one year it goes to Brussels and the next year it goes to one of ESINs islands, such as recently on Hven, in Sweden.

Its very good for networking, meeting with our MEPs. The Irish MEPs are very helpful to us and their European counterparts are as helpful as they can be, says Rhoda.

The group has taken part in several European initiatives, such as the energy project Smilegov, and is involved in the EUs Clean Energy for Islands project, working closely with Mirtn Malid, on Oilen Chlire, and Darragh Molloy, of the Aran Energy Co-op on Inishmore, Co Galway. (Those were the two Irish islands out of 26 selected for that project.)

"ESIN is working towards getting more clean energy on islands, more renewables," says Rhoda.

Since the onset of Covid-19, ESIN has been an invaluable source of information for islanders on how to cope with the disease. They also recently worked on the EUs Intangible Heritage Project and advocated for improved fisheries regulations.

Nobody is paid in the network and it is a group effort to get programmes developed to benefit islands, whether in France, Denmark, or Ireland.

And together with chairman John Walsh, from Bere Island, Co Cork, and Camille Dressler, on the Isle Of Eigg, Scotland, Rhoda is passionate about her calling.

We try to figure out what challenges we have in common, she says.

She also consults with other island support groups, such as the Sherkin Island Development Society. And she still finds the time to contribute to Tom McSweeneys radio programme, This Island Nation. An islanders islander.

Second-Annual Garden Island bodyboarding a success – Thegardenisland.com

KOLOA Long-time bodyboarder Kawika Kaui never lost sight of the second annual Garden Island Boogie Board Classics underlying mission statement.

Saturdays bodyboarding classic held at Kuhio Beach was put on to promote the sport to the islands keiki to preserve Kauais reputation as a bodyboarding mecca.

I just like a day at the beach with all of the local people getting together, Kaui said. It is great families spending time with each other and connecting with the ocean and each other.

Kaui, now 31 and a Kauai resident, will only compete in Saturday afternoons competition as his one contest a year in the open mens division.

Kaui, a former International Boarding Association, and Hawaii Surfing Association competitor, took advantage of this opportunity to showcase his skills and advanced to Sundays quarterfinal in the mens open heat.

Kauis strategy to advance to the quarterfinal round in the second heat was about timing.

There was a nice open face wave, and I wanted to stay up and didnt want to break behind the wave, Kaui said. I kept thinking the wave was going to break, and it ended upholding.

Kaui stated he felt he got lucky during the second heat of the competition.

Normally the center surf break waves kept coming in from the east side and continued breaking during the competition, Kaui said. It was a weird opportunity to get a couple of good waves.

Tragedy to triumph

For Bryce Hollis, a 17-year-old Big Island resident, participating in the Garden Island competition marked his return to the sport.

Hollis, who took a one-year hiatus from the sport to focus on his health, enjoyed competing for the first time in Kauai.

A year ago, Hollis suffered a traumatic experience.

During a whip out while surfing, he experienced a compound fracture in his leg and a broken wrist.

The injury was so severe he had to have a metal plate inserted into his leg.

The wound didnt heal and became an MRSA infection. A bacterial infection usually spread by sharing personal items.

Having to have a PICC line inserted into his body so he could cure the infection took a while before he could return to the water.

Now recovered, he made the trip to Kauai to celebrate his girlfriends birthday and compete in the classic, marking his return to competition.

Maintaining distance

The tournament featured 300 competitors competing in nine different skill levels, and social distancing was something event organizer Chris Burkart remained conscious of.

We are trying our best, and we have to remind people to wear masks, Burkart said. People are always walking by, and we had to remind them to mask up. There were more families huddled up, and I think they are doing a good job. We have to remind people because of everyone slacks off.

Entering Sundays competition, Burkart anticipates it will be easier to patrol in a sport that isnt conducive for social distancing.

I am happy for the turnout publicly, Burkart said.

Why ‘Renovation Island’ Hosts Bryan and Sarah Baeumler Will Never Become the Next Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Ever since Fixer Upper ended in 2013, fans have eagerly looked for a renovating duo who could live up to Chip and Joanna Gainess legacy. The talented pair made a reputation transforming the worst house in the best neighborhood into dream homes for their clients. Fixer Upper became a cultural phenomenon and remains extremely popular today.

A new series on HGTV, Renovation Island, has been generating a lot of buzz lately. Bryan and Sarah Baeumler are the married stars of the series and have been drawing comparisons to Chip and Joanna. But there are a few reasons why this couple likely wont ever reach Fixer Upper levels of fame.

Part of Fixer Uppers appeal was telling the heartwarming stories of families restoring homes to start new chapters in their lives. The Gaineses were intent on helping these homeowners create beautiful spaces. Viewers could envision themselves calling up Chip and Joanna to infuse that signature farmhouse chic style in their own houses.

Meanwhile, Renovation Island has a different aim. The series follows Canadians Bryan and Sarah as they uproot their family and move to the Bahamas to renovate a dilapidated resort and turn it into a luxury vacation destination.

The audience for Fixer Upper is likely different than the viewers who enjoy Renovation Island. And thats not the only reason why the two shows are truly incomparable.

RELATED: Why Fans Loved Fixer Upper Even Though They Knew It Was Fake

Many HGTV shows feature hosts who openly disagree with each other, like Hilary Farr and David Visentin from the long-running series Love It or List It. The frequent fighting between hosts is one reason viewers embraced Chip and Joanna so eagerly they were so clearly in love with each other, and it was refreshing. They were much more likely to laugh and smile than bicker and roll their eyes.

Meanwhile, Bryan and Sarah on Renovation Island tend to get into disagreements during the renovation process. Fans point out that Sarah is more concerned with how upscale the final design appears while Bryan is more focused on finishing the project quickly so the couple can start earning revenue.

Viewers have also expressed their distaste for Sarahs frequent last-minute changes to the design plan and even called her a spoiled brat because of it.

The biggest reason why the Baeumlers will never become the Gaineses is because they dont have to. Chip and Joanna just announced their intentions to reboot Fixer Upper on Magnolia Network, which is scheduled to launch in 2021.

The couple hadnt planned on reviving the series that made them famous. However, after a three-year hiatus they decided it was time to start helping clients create their dream homes once again.

The day we wrapped our final episode of Fixer Upper, we really believed it was a chapter closed. We knew we needed a break and a moment to catch our breath. But we also knew we werent done dreaming about ways to make old things new again, Chip and Joanna said in a statement.

They continued: These past few years, weve continued tackling renovations and projects, doing the work were passionate about, but I dont think either of us anticipated how the show would become such a permanent fixture in our hearts. Weve missed sharing the stories of these families and their homes with you, and were excited to do that again very soon!

Just like that, theres no need for the Baeumlers or anyone else to become the next Chip and Joanna Gaines. These two arent going anywhere.

Waterfowl Hunting Permits Available for Deal Island, Fairmount – The Southern Maryland Chronicle

Lottery Open for Wildlife Management Area ImpoundmentsNews Release, Maryland Department of Natural Resources

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced a new schedule and process for annual permit-only waterfowl hunting at Deal Island Wildlife Management Area and Fairmount Wildlife Management Area impoundments, located in Somerset County on Marylands Eastern Shore. The changes are being made to reduce crowding and improve the quality of waterfowl hunting during the regular duck season.

Applications for permits for both the Deal Island and Fairmount impoundments are now available on the Departments website and are due Sept. 14. Permits for the regular duck season will be issued by a lottery conducted in mid-September.

These permits will allow the selected hunter and up to two additional guests to hunt on the dates for which they are chosen.

The 2020-2021 schedule provides 17 open hunting dates during the three combined duck season segments at both impoundments as follows:

Hunters should note that a permit will now be required to hunt on all open days during the regular duck season at the Deal Island impoundment. As in the past, a permit will be required to hunt at the Fairmount impoundments on the opening day of each segment of the regular duck season.

All the impoundments will remain open to qualified hunters without permits on special youth and veteran hunting days, and during the September Resident Goose Season. In addition, the Fairmount impoundments will be open during the September Teal Season without permits, although the Deal Island impoundment will be closed during that time..

Island Fights greatest: 10 fighters who reached the highest stage after Island Fights – Pensacola News Journal

With the 10th anniversary of Island Fights approaching on Sept. 6, countless big names have been built and have competed in front of an electrifying crowd in Pensacola.

Take a look at 10 mixed martial artists who have competed at Island Fights on their way to some of the biggest stages in the sport including the UFC, Professional Fighting League and the Bare Knuckle Fight Championships.

Fighters are listed in alphabetical order:

Dillon Cleckler (red corner) vs. Jordan Mitchell (blue corner) during Island Fights 58 at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola on Friday, August 2, 2019.(Photo: Gregg Pachkowski/gregg@pnj.com)

Cleckler started 10-0 as an amateur in Island Fights, then rattled off an eight-fight win streak as a professional. After a four-year hiatus, he returned to win two-consecutive bouts. He then signed a major deal with the BKFC, shortly after the company merged with DAZN.

To take the break he did and then sign with one of the biggest companies out there is no doubt impressive, Island Fights founder and CEO Dean Toole said. It was a very proud moment for us.

Brandon Davis reacts after defeating Randy Costa (not pictured) during UFC 236 at State Farm Arena.(Photo: John David Mercer, USA TODAY Sports)

Davis made one appearance at Island Fights and made a major impression, which landed him a spot in UFC commissioner Dana Whites contender series and ultimately a UFC contract.

Him at Island Fights was the greatest fight Ive ever seen, Toole said. He took several short-notice fights and had some tough, split-decision losses. A lot of his fights, it seemed like he was just one judge away from winning.

Davis finished 10-8 before retiring in September2019.

Mike Davis, red tape, takes on Elvin Brito at the Pensacola Bay Center on Friday, December 21, 2018, during Island Fights 51. Davis won by knockout in the third round.(Photo: Jody Link/online@pnj.com)

Davis went undefeated through Island Fights and up to the finals of Whites contender series. He lost to Sodiq Yusuff, who is currently undefeated in the UFC.

That was the best fight Ive seen in a contender series, Toole said. Whoever won that fight was going to get a UFC contract immediately.

Davis returned to Island Fights and rattled off two more wins. He was called for a short-notice UFC contract in April 2019 five weeks after his most-recent Island Fights win and has gone 1-1 in the UFC since.

Hes currently 8-2 as a professional fighter in the UFCs lightweight division.

Hannah Goldy, blue tape, takes on Shannon Goughary during Island Fights 50 at the Pensacola Bay Center on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Goldy won by unanimous decision.(Photo: Jody Link/online@pnj.com)

Goldy appeared at Island Fights three times and instantly became a fan favorite while winning each bout. She accounted for the first female main event in Island Fights history at Island Fights 50. She went on to Whites contender series and currently has a UFC contract.

She wasnt local, so we wondered if she could be a ticker seller for us, Toole said. Before her, we had never seen a non-local fighter get that much support. Island Fights ended up being a huge start for her career and she did a lot for Island Fights. She got a lot of people that werent fight fans excited.

Goldy is 5-1 in the UFC's flyweight division.

Jacob Kilburn (red corner) vs. Deivision Ribeiro (blue corner) during Island Fights 58 at the Pensacola Bay Center in Pensacola on Friday, August 2, 2019.(Photo: Gregg Pachkowski/gregg@pnj.com)

Kilburn has shown great perseverance while continuing to chase his goals as a professional fighter.

He won his first time at Island Fights against an amazing local Elvin Brito, Toole said. He got on Dana Whites contender series after that.

Kilburn took a loss at the contender series and decided to take one year off.

He returned for UFC Fight Pass at Island Fights with a knockout victory. He earned another KO win five weeks later in Georgia.

Hes currently 3-3 in the UFCs featherweight division.

Thats super impressive; if you lose on the contender series, you can be mentally defeated, Toole said. He took a little time off and got right back in there.

Max Mustaki, red tape, takes on Mike Barnett at the Pensacola Bay Center on Friday, December 21, 2018, during Island Fights 51. Barnett won by unanimous decision.(Photo: Jody Link/online@pnj.com)

Mustaki garnered a reputation for creating must-see action every time he put on the gloves. He broke his foot during Whites contender series, but displayed more than enough talent to land a deal.

He will be fighting for Icon on UFC Fight Pass in Biloxi on Sept. 24.

Every fight he had at Island Fights were some of the best Ive seen in Island Fights history, Toole said.

Mustaki is currently 6-4 as a professional.

Alex Nicholson, red tape, takes on Chris Barnett during Island Fights 42 at the Pensacola Bay Center on Saturday, October 14, 2017. Nicholson won by knockout in the first round.(Photo: Jody Link/online@PNJ.com)

Nicholson went undefeated during his time with Island Fights, including wins over previously unbeaten fighters like Cleckler, Chaz Morgan and Chase Sherman. Nicholsons UFC career was highlighted by a first-round knockout against Devin Clark in July 2016. Hes currently fighting in the PFL with a 13-9 MMA record.

He beat every undefeated heavyweight during his time with Island Fights, Toole said. He had a good run in the UFC. He made it all the way to the semifinals in the PFL where you have to fight twice in one night and lost in a very close, split decision.

Frank Carrillo, blue gloves, and Mike Perry, red gloves, fight each other Friday night during Island Fights 37 at the Pensacola Bay Center. Perry knocked Carrillo out in the first round for the win.(Photo: Jody Link/GoPensacola.com)

Perry went 9-0 as an amateur and is currently 14-6 in the UFCs welterweight division. He boxed twice at Island Fights and competed in one MMA bout.

He fought for us a few times and became one of the biggest and up-and-coming stars in the UFC, Toole said. Hes someone that is always exciting to see and always is in an exciting fight.

Perry is 14-6 and currently in the UFC's welterweight division.

Chase Sherman, who has fought on UFC cards, savors his Island Fights 51 win against Frank Tate in their MMA heavyweight bout by chugging a Bud Light at ringside at the Pensacola Bay Center.(Photo: Jody Link/online@pnj.com)

Getting into the UFC is difficult, but making a return after being released is even more daunting.

After a 7-1 start as a pro, Sherman signed to UFC and fought in six bouts, two on short notice.

His contract was not renewed and he returned for three wins at Island Fights between December and May 2019.

He returned to the UFC in May 2020, and defeated Isaac Villanueva by TKO in round two. He also signed a contract with BKFC in March 2019.

He didnt have the best run his first time in the UFC, but he also took a lot of short-notice fights, Toole said. Its the hardest thing in the world to get into the UFC and its nearly impossible to get back in. But that shows what type of fighter Sherman is.

Brok Weaver, red tape, takes on Tyler Hill at the Pensacola Bay Center on Friday, December 21, 2018, during Island Fights 51. Weaver won by submission via a rear naked choke.(Photo: Jody Link/online@pnj.com)

Weaver has made more appearances in Island Fights than anyone and has had plenty of ups and downs in his career.

As an amateur, he had a below .500 record but he was always in an exciting fight, Toole said. Just when we were thinking, 'Dang, maybe this isnt for you, Brok,' he goes on an eight-fight win streak. He got on contender, won some fights and lost in a battle in the finals. He gave the most epic post-fight speech and signed a UFC contract shortly after.

Weaver is 15-5 as a pro and will compete against Frank Camacho at UFC Fight Night on Sept. 12.

Theres been a handful of people that have been instrumental in the growth of Island Fights, Toole said. They might not have made it to the UFC, but they helped get Island Fights where it is today. With Island Fights approaching the 10-year anniversary, its amazing to think about the athletes that have gone through the promotion. Its all been worth it. Theres been countless hours. Matchmaking fights is a 24-7 gig. Its been a super grind for me and my staff for the last 10 years and its all been worth it.

August 10, 2020 - The southernmost Croatian inhabited island, Lastovo, together with other 45 islets, cliffs, and reefs, is Croatia's youngest nature park. Due to the richness of Mediterranean plants and endangered animal species, Lastovo is among the last ten treasures of Mediterranean biodiversity. Along with Mljet, Lastovo is the most forested Croatian island, with about 70% of forest area. Larger settlements on the island are Lastovo, Ubli, Pasadur, Zaklopatica and Skrivena Luka.

The hilly landscape formed by numerous karst fields and bays is ideal for those who enjoy recreational cycling. The seabed rich in caves and passages is a paradise for diving lovers. Of the diving sites, the most attractive and the most visited are Seka Draan and Petrovac.

In addition to the above activities, visitors can enjoy hunting, recreational and sport fishing and star gazing. Lastovo is an island with one of the darkest skies in Europe and among tourists, it's also known as the island of crystal stars.

According to the 2011 census, Lastovo has 792 inhabitants, but the real number is much lower. In the last ten years, many have moved away and the number of those who are registered there, but actually live and work elsewhere, is not negligible.

Most islanders are engaged in tourism and related activities such as agriculture, fishing and trade. Since the season on Lastovo is very short, tourism is not the only branch from which most residents live.

Part of the population is employed in the institutions located on the island, such us JUPP Lastovo islands, Elementary School Braa Glumac, police, army, post office, state administration office There are those whom agriculture, tourism or fishing is the only source of income, so when the season is over, after a short break, preparations for the next one begin very quickly, says Bruna Rizvanovi, director of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Lastovo.

In terms of tourism, last year was a record for the number of overnight stays.

Due to the tendency to increase in number of overnight stays in the last seven years, we believed that it would continue by at least 5-10% in terms of capacity. We planned our activities accordingly. However, this epidemic surprised us all and showed that the future is unpredictable. I believe that we will be able to push through this year and that this experience will help us to become even better and to develop in line with sustainable tourism, she explains.

During July 2020, 74.21% of last year's arrivals and 73.79% of last year's overnight stays were realized in the municipality of Lastovo. All catering facilities are open, but most of them opened later than planned, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for the music festivals for which Lastovo is famous, one has not been held, and the other will be held from 12th to 16th of August.

The 'LUZ Lastovo u zvijezdama' festival was not held this year, but the reason was not the current situation, but technical difficulties with the organization. I believe and hope that next year, the organizers of LUZ will meet again and continue the tradition of a diverse program and offer in the pre-season period, which is extremely important for our island, Rizvanovi adds.

This year's edition of festival LAstovo.OTOKGLAZBE. adheres to a slighty different concept of organization due to the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the attitude of organizers about the importance of ensuring the health of visitors. Because of it, it will be held in a much smaller capacity, without the organization of a camp and with fewer visitors than usual.

DJ D-Gree, Stray Dogg and Mary May are responsible for the music program, while the young contemporary circus collective Madame Gauc will perform the show Fil. In addition to the abovementioned program that will take place in MihajLA bay, part will take place in the village of Lastovo.

Rizvanovi believes that the results of this tourist season are more than good, considering the situation in the rest of the county.

I believe that the distance of the island from large city centers and the lack of crowds, but also the fact that we didn't record any cases of COVID-19, have affected that the results of tourist traffic are higher than expected. People feel safe knowing that the possibility of infection on the island is small, Rizvanovi concludes.

DNR: Conservation officer rescues two men stranded near an island – KESQ

Click here for updates on this story

Michigan (WNEM) Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Todd Sumbera is receiving praise after rescuing two men who were stranded offshore near Drummond Island.

The two Chicago men were stranded in rough water on Friday, Aug. 7. for about 10 minutes.

DNR officials said Sumbera was conducting marine patrol offshore north of the Island and west of Harbor Island when he saw two people in the water clinging to an overturn personal watercraft.

As Sumbera approached the men he identified himself as help.

DNR officials said a 41-year-old man expressed his gratitude to Sumbera stating he didnt know how to swim. They said both men were properly wearing torn life jackets.

Im happy that Sumbera safely returned the men to shore in what could have been a much worse situation had the men not been wearing life jackets, said Chief Gary Hagler, DNR Law Enforcement Division. This is an example of how wearing a life jacket can save a life.

According to officials, after Sumbera helped the men onto his patrol vessel, he determined they were in stable condition.

The 64-year-old man told Sumbera that they had never operated a personal watercraft before and the high winds and rough water swamped them extremely fast when they put the watercraft in reverse, the DNR said.

Sumbera towed the waterlogged watercraft back to the Drummond Island Yacht Haven and took the two men to shore.

Officials said Sumbera advised the men to obtain and use properly fitting, well-maintained life jackets before their next adventure.

DNR officials said several people have drowned or almost-drowned this summer. For more tips on boating and beach safety, visit the DNR website.

Nuclear watchdog opposes any agreement that would transfer ownership of Three Mile Island Unit 2 – LancasterOnline

Discussions are ongoing about a criticized plan to transfer ownership of Three Mile Islands defunct Unit 2 reactor to a Utah-based company that would complete its dismantling.

And signs point to a settlement between state and federal regulators, and FirstEnergy, the power company that now owns the unit that partially melted down in 1979.

At least thats what Dauphin County-based nuclear watchdog Eric Epstein said he suspects. Epstein said he opposes any kind of agreement that would advance the plan, which he worries could threaten radioactive disaster.

We will not agree to allow Three Mile Island to become a radioactive waste site, Epstein said. An island in a river is the worst place for it.

Spokespeople speaking on the behalf of the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission did not provide details about the negotiations.

Regarding a settlement, DEP is evaluating the motion and will reach a decision soon, DEP spokesman Neil Shader said. More information will be available once a decision is reached.

FirstEnergy spokeswoman Jennifer Young said much the same.

FirstEnergy continues to work with the DEP as well as the NRC to address questions relevant to the license transfer and decommissioning plans for TMI-2, she said. Details of the settlement agreement are confidential.

Success! An email has been sent with a link to confirm list signup.

Error! There was an error processing your request.

Last fall, Unit 2s owners at FirstEnergy announced they planned to transfer ownership of all related licenses and assets to a subsidiary of Utah-based EnergySolutions, which would eventually dismantle the reactor.

The transfer must be approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and its to that commission that Epstein of the Harrisburg-based Three Mile Island Alert raised concerns, urging that the transfer not be approved before they are addressed.

Specifically, he worried about the environmental threats of leaving radioactive waste on the island, which is situated in the Susquehanna River just north of Conoy Township near the Dauphin-Lancaster counties line. That's in addition to fears that rate-payer funded accounts will not have enough money to cover the cost of decommissioning.

Similar concerns were included in a letter sent earlier this year from DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell to federal regulators.

But now, Epstein worries that DEP officials will settle, undermining those fears, though he admits he hasnt been a part of ongoing discussions a point of contention.

I dont know how you build public confidence by excluding the public, he said.

Regardless of what may come from negotiations, Epstein said his organization plans to continue advocating for safety by any legal means, appealing decisions if necessary.

Grand Island School district expects technical devices will be in high demand as more students learn remotely – WIVB.com – News 4

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) A local school district is noticing that devices, such as Chromebooks are in high demand, as people continue working from home and students prepare for distance learning.

Grand Island Central School District Superintendent Brian Graham says each student in the district grades 2nd through 12th will have access to a device to learn remotely. He says the district planned accordingly for that, but says any extra Chromebooks they ordered might not be in on time.

Those devices are in high demand so they may be delayed for the start of school, Graham said.

Since the district is leaning towards a hybrid model of learning, Graham says students will need access to devices such as Chromebooks.

Through those devices, our children will be working with our teachers through google classroom, he said.

He says since March, the school district has been planning to make sure each student has what they need to learn from home.

This summer were purchasing Chromebooks and making sure that every child has access, Graham said. Theres a big demand right now for those devices, luckily were only looking at a small number perhaps 200 to 400, because we were already prepared.

Local tech expert Ron Odde says hes not surprised Chromebooks are a hot item.

I can understand why they would go with Chromebooks because that is certainly the least expensive option, Odde said.

Odde owns Your PC Medic in Buffalo. Each week, close to two dozen people, many who work from home, reach out needing computer or technical help. With many school districts in the area pushing for a hybrid model of learning, Odde says that could mean parents who arent used to the technology will have to become more computer savvy by next month.

Regardless of what technology is being used there are definitely going to be some people that will need some assistance in learning how to use

the technology, learning how to access the various resources that the school system might be asking them to access online, he said. So certainly that is anticipated.

His advice for parents..

Just be patient, Odde said. Dont assume that something catastrophic happening just because its not working at the moment.

uBreakiFix is another business in Western New York that tells News 4 theyve been busy lately as well. The owner says each of its seven locations between Buffalo and Rochester have been booked up with people needing computer repairs or technical support.

Sarah Minkewicz is a reporter who has been part of the News 4 team since 2019. See more of her work here.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI) is distributing boxes of fresh free food from Fresh Direct for Staten Islanders, especially in light of thousands of Islanders whose food has gone bad because of power outages, post-Tropical Storm Isaias.

We distributed over 400 boxes (Friday) and have about 50 left for distribution today, said Laura Del Prete, of CHASI. We will be getting more next week to do another distribution.

You can pick up a pre-packed box of non perishable items at 56 Bay Street. Please be sure to sign for your box, while supplies last.

The program, started at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, has recently been extended through the end of September. From March to June of this year, pantry staff served over 24,000 households.

So many people have lost the contents of their fridge due to the storm and we are here to help, added Del Prete. Box contents vary, but include canned goods, cereal, pasta or rice, and other non-perishable grocery items.

The best days to pick up are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., but food may be available at other times by calling 718-808-1450.

The CHASI mobile food pantry visits locations in 16 neighborhoods across the Island, said Emilie Tippins, CHASI Vice President Communications & Development. The past four months have dramatically increased the need for pantry services.

Respecting social distancing protocol, the CHASI pantry service has moved outdoors. Benefits navigators work with clients in need to help with health insurance benefits and SNAP benefits.

Five new bridges leading to Deira Islands open to traffic – The National

Five new bridges leading to the entrance of the man-made Deira Islands have opened to traffic.

The bridges improve entry and exit from the four islands from Al Khaleej Street and Abu Baker Al Siddique Street.

The new roads can handle up to 20,700 vehicles per hour, said Dubais Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The newly constructed bridges and roads provide access points to and from Deira Islands at the intersection of Al Khaleej and Abu Baker Al Siddique streets, said Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, RTA director general.

The bridges span 2,571 metres in length.

The Deira Islands project is a lavish waterfront development which has been years in the making.

Developed by Nakheel, it consists of four man-made islands and will span 17 million square metres along the coast of Deira.

The project is expected to attract 250,000 residents and will also be home to marinas, hotels and mixed-use buildings.

Traffic studies indicated that the project will generate about 110,000 journeys during peak hours, which requires a huge infrastructure of roads and public transport networks.

The bridges leading to Deira Islands Project is a key part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Project that stretches 13km along the Sheikh Rashid, Al Mina, Al Khaleej and Cairo Streets.

The Al Shindagha Corridor project has been split into five sections, of which the first two have been completed.

These include upgrading the junction of the Sheikh Rashid-Oud Metha streets (Wafi Junction), and the intersection between the Sheikh Rashid-Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed streets.

Work is currently underway on the third phase of the project, which will cover entry and exit points at Deira Islands at the intersection of Abu Baker Al Siddique Street.

The work will also include improvements on Corniche Street as well as the intersections at Al Khaleej and Falcon streets.

This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

The projects fourth phase will include the construction of bridges stretching 3.4 km, tunnels that extend to 2.25 km, six surface junctions, and roads extending to 5.1 km.

The fourth phase is due to be completed by the end of 2025.

The fifth and final phase covers the construction of bridges leading to the south of Deira Islands, extending to 1.5 km.

This is expected to be completed by 2027.

Head of island police station to be removed over lax virus checks | Kathimerini – www.ekathimerini.com

The head of the police station on the Saronic Gulf island of Poros is expected to be removed after the local mayor accused him of not doing enough checks among local businesses for compliance with the safety measures against the coronavirus.

In comments made to broadcaster Skai on Friday, mayor Giannis Dimitriades said the municipality had to impose the measures because local police was not doing its job and that there was a general attitude of not intervening among officers serving on the island.

Sources in the Hellenic Police (ELAS), which started the procedure for his removal, said on Saturday thatthe head of the Poros police station has filed a complaint against his transfer on Saturday, which is expected to be assessed by the competent police bodies.

Health authorities have confirmed more than 30 infections on the island which have led Civil Protection to impose a series of restrictive measures to contain the spread of the virus.

These include a curfew shutting down all businesses from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. the following day, a ban on public and private gatherings of any kind involving more than nine people, the suspensions of farmers markets, villages festivals and other such public gatherings, as well as a cap of four (or six if they belong to the same household) on the number of people allowed to sit at the same cafe or restaurant table.

Masks have also been made mandatory in all public spaces, indoor and out.

Rosner told My Devotional Thoughts that the movie was filmed in late October/early November of last year. He told My Devotional Thoughts that the movie was filmed just outside Vancouver at Rowenas Inn.

It seemed like a golf course/AirBNB situation. We shot basically the whole thing there.

HallmarksWedding March 3andWedding March 4 were also filmed at Rowenas Inn on the River.

Rowenas on the River is a 160-acre estate that was built in the 1800s. It was originally owned by the Pretty family (hence why its called Pretty Estates Resort), and now it features an inn, four cottages, a restaurant, and a golf course. Kerry from Ive Scene It On Hallmark interviewed the owners of the estate to get more details aboutWedding Marchand the location (and actually stayed on the property too, so youll definitely want to visit her articlefor more details.). Kerry learned that the Pretty couple originally bought the land in 1924. Charles Pretty built a dam to produce electricity for the property on the land. Kerry wrote that the property was just as beautiful in person as it looks on TV.

Rowenas Inn on the River is also referred to as the Pretty Estates Resort. And yes, they offer wedding packages.

Heres a photo Rosner shared during filming:

Rosner told Moments with Mercy that his favorite film moments were the many sabotaged by dogs.

He said: Dogs are like the ultimate improv actors. They are as natural as you can be (because they dont know theyre shooting a movie) and as unpredictable as you can imagine (because they dont know theyre shooting a movie). It was a lot of fun to work around them.

Heres a photo from filming that Rosner tagged in Vancouver.

Andrea Shawcross co-wrote the movie with Lucie Guest just a year ago, Shawcross shared. She found out the movie was picked up while traveling in Europe.

Heres another behind-the-scenes shot:

Rosner tagged this one in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, with one of the dogs featured in the filming. Maple Ridge is in the northeastern part of greater Vancouver.

A kitchen scene with Marcus and Lily was shot at Golden Ears Cheescrafters in Maple Ridge, according to this post from Rosner.

He joked that the movie wasOn Golden Pond: The Prequel.

Vancouver was also one of the filming locations.

Rosner told My Devotional Thoughts that his character has the same first name that he does because one of the writers had him in mind when writing the movie. Rosner said: once I received the script, I just saw that my characters name was Marcus, and I was like, Uh, thats me, I guess. I dont even remember if there was a conversation about changing my name. I thought it was funny and that it would be funny to keep it. And we just went with it.
