Needle-Sharing by Sex Workers Tied to Spread of Syphilis

(HealthDay News) -- Needle-sharing among drug abusers may play as big a role as risky sexual behavior in the transmission of syphilis, a new study suggests.

American and Mexican researchers interviewed more than 900 female sex workers in the Mexican border towns of Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, which are adjacent to San Diego and El Paso, Texas, respectively. The sex workers, who were also tested for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), operate legally in the two Mexican towns, which are located on major drug trafficking routes.

The researchers found that female sex workers who didn't have HIV, but tested positive for active syphilis infection, were more likely than those without active syphilis infection to inject drugs, to use illegal drugs before or during sex in the past month, and to have U.S. clients who had higher rates of drug use, including the use of injection drugs. Functional Medicine Physicians and Staff – Five Stones

Our physicians are Board Certified in both Family Medicine and in Integrative and Holistic medicine, and are trained in Functional Medicine. Dr. Calihan is a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. Our nurse practitioner is also trained in functional medicine, and we have a variety of other providers who offer services in alignment with our philosophy of health and wellness. That philosophy is that optimal health and wellness comes from being in balance in the body, mind and spirit, and that this is best attained through addressing each of the five key areas that contribute to the overall balance: healthful eating, balanced movement, integrative medicine, mindful stress management and interconnected living. These areas are the stones in the Five Stones.

Dr. Martha Calihan has practiced Family Medicine for more than 25 years, during which time her interests and her practice have evolved into a holistic, integrative approach to medicine. She is licensed to practice acupuncture and is also trained in Mind-Body Medicine. In 2013, she was certified to practice Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. She was part of the first group of practitioners to be certified nationally.

Dr. Calihan graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1982 and then completed her residency in Family Medicine at the Fairfax Family Practice Center, in Fairfax, Virginia, where she served as chief resident. After completing her residency, Dr. Calihan served as a faculty member at the residency until she moved to Leesburg-Sterling Family Practice in 1990.

Dr. Calihan studied acupuncture at the UCLA School of Medicine program with Dr. Joseph Helms. In 1997, she trained with Dr. Jim Gordon at the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC, and was subsequently a preceptor at his program for training health care professionals in Mind-Body Medicine skills. In 2000 Dr. Calihan attained board certification in Holistic Medicine.

It is from this learned background that Dr. Calihan has come to practice Integrative Medicine, a field for which she has great passion. It is in the practice of Integrative Medicine that she is able to combine modalities from multiple traditions of healthcare, and in so doing to approach each patient uniquely and to develop a personalized plan with each to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

Men More Likely to Skip Cancer Screenings: Study

(HealthDay News) -- Men are less willing than women to be screened for cancer, even though men have higher cancer death rates, a new study shows.

Researchers conducted a telephone survey of nearly 1,150 adults in New York City, Baltimore, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, who answered questions from the Cancer Screening Questionnaire. Most of the participants were aged 30 to 59, and 35 percent of them were men.

"This study examined beliefs and attitudes held by men and women about cancer screening. Our aim was to gain insight for improving existing cancer health promotion practices," study corresponding author Jenna Davis, of the department of health outcomes and behavior at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla., said in a center news release.

"Our findings indicate that there is a need for better health and cancer screening promotion among men," she said.

The researchers suggested several reasons why men are less willing than women to undergo cancer screening: most cancer awareness campaigns in the media are for women's breast cancer; there is a lack of government-sponsored men's cancer awareness campaigns; and studies indicate that women see their primary care doctor more often than men. Researchers Perfect the View of Heart Disease

(HealthDay News) -- Radiologists have developed a way to gain better insight into signs of heart disease by using cardiac CT scans that detect narrowed arteries and low blood flow.

CT scans use X-rays to create cross-sectional images of the body's internal anatomy. The scans can detect blockages in coronary arteries, but it's hard to tell if they're actually preventing blood from flowing to the heart.

In a new study, published Sept. 15 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital explained how to gain more detailed pictures of what is going on inside the body, potentially giving doctors more information about the best treatment.

The research, based on tests in 34 cardiac patients, "is among the first demonstrations of the use of cardiac CT to detect both coronary artery stenosis and resulting myocardial ischemia simultaneously in a single examination," Dr. Ricardo C. Cury, a cardiac imaging specialist at the hospital's Heart Center and the study's principal investigator, explained in a hospital news release. Read more...
