Introducing the Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Pain podcast – VAntage Point – VAntage Point Blog

Veterans with chronic pain are searching for new ways to manage their conditions. The new Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Pain podcast offers fresh perspectives on chronic pain management and various interventions, discussing self-care and practical strategies for Veterans and their well-being.

The new podcast takes a Veteran-centered Whole Health approach, providing skills and knowledge that encourage them to view healing as a journey that requires them to stay engaged, working toward wholeness.

The podcast also features topics about self-care and complementary and integrative treatments that can be incorporated into daily life to reduce the impact of chronic pain and improve overall health.

Studies have shown that chronic pain is a highly prevalent condition, estimated to affect over 50% of Veterans who receive care through VA. Many of them are seeking new ways to manage this lifelong condition. Veterans are using lifestyle choices and complementary and integrative health modalities such as acupuncture, yoga and therapeutic massage.

Whole Health for Veterans with Chronic Pain podcast

As part of VAs transformation to Veteran-centered Whole Health, these options are available.

Cherise Knotts is a 53-year-old Veteran who is engaged in Whole Health treatment for chronic pain and substance use that incorporates battlefield acupuncture, meditation, healing touch, nutrition and exercise.

I am accomplishing my short- and long-term goals, Knotts said. Im so proud of myself because, when I was using, I hardly finished anything. Life has its struggles with pain, but I am doing a lot of homeopathic medicines along with pharmaceuticals. Things are coming along just fine. I think the reason we overcome obstacles is so that we can be a beacon for others.

The podcast takes listeners through the Circle of Health and the eight components of self-care to teach self-care skills to manage chronic pain. The podcast is helpful for anyone who wishes to learn more and supplement their treatment plans. Podcast host, Dr. Carol Bowman, is a primary care physician at the Los Angeles VA and has worked with patients with chronic pain for over 10 years, and with Veterans for over six years.

In addition to primary care internal medicine training, Dr. Bowman studied and practiced holistic medicine for over 25 years and is certified in integrative pain management.

Our conventional approach using surgery and medications has failed for chronic pain, Bowman said. I have worked with hundreds of Veterans who have benefited from a Whole Health approach and are living their best lives. I wanted to bring these tools and information right to Veterans so they can embark on a healing journey right now.

Alternative Therapies That Have Helped Me Manage Different MS Symptoms – WebMD

Multiple sclerosis is often called the disease of a thousand faces. And thats because the symptoms are variable and can be different for each person.

Besides the commonly recommended physical therapy and occupational therapy, theres also a variety of alternative therapies that can help manage your symptoms as well.

Heres a list of the therapies Ive tried during my MS journey to manage the vast range of symptoms Ive had throughout the years and that have given me the best results:

Of all of them, aquatic therapy has to be my favorite. Theres no limit to what I can do in the water, like marching and lifting my leg. Things I couldnt do otherwise. The benefits are the same as those of a regular workout but without the struggle of fighting gravity.

Not only does our body need maintenance, but so does our brain. Unfortunately, many MSers experience some kind of cognitive deficit due to the condition. For those more internet-savvy, there are options like Lumosity, CogniFit, and Brain Metrix. There are also console games for Wii and Nintendo DS like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy.

If you dont care for technology, a simple puzzle can challenge your visual perception. Crosswords and word finding games can improve your language. A sudoku puzzle will challenge your logical thinking.

No matter where you are in your MS journey, there are many alternatives to manage your symptoms. I would recommend adding an integrative medicine physician to your care team who can guide you and refer you to the different therapies based on your particular needs.

Achieving wellness is the ultimate goal. Wellness is an individual, active pursuit of an optimal state of health and well-being. But when youre living with MS, this can be a little bit of a challenge. It requires determination and resilience. We have the potential to live a healthier and happier life where instead of surviving, were thriving.

Weigh in: 9 ways to reassure shoppers that supplements are a healthful choice – New Hope Network

Whether they're called fraudulent, unproven or expensive urine, dietary supplements frequently fall prey to negative press. Although the full story is usually more complex than "X supplement doesn't work," media outlets make oversimplified conclusions and craft misleading clickbait headlines, generating bad buzz. This leaves natural products retailers to address shoppers' skepticism and set the record straight.

"On social media, negative press travels six times further than positive press does," says Abraham Nabors, second-generation owner and director of education and standards of Mustard Seed Market and Caf in Akron, Ohio. "In this day and age, you can be certain people will read negative headlines about supplements and come in to talk to you about them."

To help retailers answer shoppers' efficacy questions and explain supplements' roleaccurately, effectively and legallywe asked Nabors plus an integrative physician and a supplements educator to share their best advice.

Cheryl Myers, chief of scientific affairs and education,EuroPharma Inc. in Green Bay, Wisconsin

Distinguish vitamins and supplements.Mainstream medical research often says "you're wasting your money on vitamins." Here's the problem: Vitamins are single compoundsA, B, C, D, E and Kbut in many consumers' minds, everything sold in a health food store is a vitamin. So, when consumers see negative headlines, they get the message that nothing sold in a health food store works. To combat this, explain to shoppers that most supplements are not vitamins.

Identify appropriate endpoints. Consumers constantly hear that vitamins don't work or herbs have been disprovenbut it's for things they were never intended to do in the first place. To prevent nutrient deficiency syndrome, it has been proven that that supplemental nutrients work. For optimal immune function, it has been proven that without optimal levels of vitamin C on board, the immune system isn't as vigorous. Ask shoppers what they're aiming to achieve and outline realistic expectations.

Highlight flaws in meta-analyses. Many negative studies on supplements are meta-analyses, where researchers combine the results of several studies to look for trends or efficacy. I don't think these should be used as a research tool for herbsever. Unlike, say, ibuprofen, which is a single chemical entity, herbs contain multiple compounds. To accurately compare multiple studies of an herb, researchers would need to control for standardization, absorption, dosage size, study duration and other factors, but they often don't. They'll just pool the results of several studies and conclude that an herb doesn't work, when in reality, one good study may have shown efficacy, but it was diluted by all the low-dose and weird studies.

Abraham Nabors, owner and director of education and standards, Mustard Seed Market and Caf in Akron, Ohio

Identify experiential vs. nonexperiential."Will I feel it working?" That's the number-one thing people want to know when determining supplement efficacy, even though it can only be applied to some supplements. With CBD or turmeric, you may notice pain reduction or inflammation support, whereas you're probably not going to feel the effects of vitamin A. It's important to communicate clearly which supplements are in the "feel it" category and which aren't. For those that aren't, to help shoppers understand whether or not they're working, I'm a huge fan of diagnostics. We sell omega-3 fatty acid blood spot tests and vitamin D blood tests. It's powerful when people can see data showing their levels.

Arm staff with facts. We have to respond to supplement criticism all the time, which is why we need to be more informed than our customers, who trust us to pour over the details and be transparent and factual about what we've learned. The science is complicated, and you have to look at the nuances. Whenever a new hit piece comes out, I research it and develop our official talking points in anticipation of people asking about it. Along with helping individual customers in the aisles, this helps us maintain our brand proposition in the community. If you don't prepare your staff, who knows what their individual perceptions might be, and if they're speaking on behalf of your brand, that can be risky.

Give credence to correlation data.Regarding the studies suggesting vitamin D is not effective for COVID-19, I tell people we don't have conclusive scientific word yetbut the correlation data blows my mind. When 90% of people dying of COVID-19 are deficient in vitamin D, what's the risk of taking it? As long as you measure and don't go into toxicity, I say there is nothing but benefit to taking vitamin D and getting your levels to the optimal range.

Gina Serraiocco, M.D., internist and integrative medicine practitioner,Palo Alto Medical Foundation's Institute for Health and Healing in San Carlos, California

Explain nutrient optimization. When explaining what nutrients can do for the body, I use the analogy of an old, abandoned tree that's not doing well. When you give it proper sun, water and compost, the tree inherently knows how to fix itself. You're not telling it how to grow leaves; rather, you're supporting its environment and innate wisdom. It's the same with humans. You are trying to optimize the terrain, and with right supportive terrainincluding the proper intake of nutrients. The problem is our soil is now so depleted that it's hard to get enough nutrients from food, so there are many supplements we absolutely need in order to stay healthy in today's world.

Point out study limitations. When research is done on a single supplement, I tell people it's like fertilizing a tree but giving it only nitratesof course that won't work! Similarly, when we study the standard Americanwho is sedentary, eats Big Macs and takes medications that strip them of nutrientsand give them only vitamin D, well, no wonder vitamin D doesn't help. Vitamin D works in concert with other nutrients. It helps the body absorb calcium for bones, but it needs magnesium and vitamin K2 to direct the calcium. So, if vitamin D doesn't have its team, like it doesn't in many studies, then we can't expect much.

Dispel the silver-bullet myth.In our Western world, we have this notion that every single problem has "one pill to fix the ill." But the body is so much more complex than that. And with so much disease in our bodies in our unhealthy environments, there is rarely a simple fix. Now, that doesn't mean negative studies about supplements should be ignored. Retailers should be upfront about what supplements can and can't do.

AIHM Fellowship in Integrative Health and Medicine Accepting Healthcare Practitioner Applicants and Awarding Scholarships for Oct 2021 Session – PR…

We encourage healthcare practitioners from a broad range of professions into our program as we know that we can improve healthcare through collaboration and sharing perspectives amongst all providers, said Mimi Guarneri, MD, FACC, ABOIM, Founding AIHM President.

SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) June 17, 2021

The Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) Interprofessional Fellowship in Integrative Health & Medicine, a 1000-hour hybrid program for clinicians who aim to become leaders in integrative health and medicine, has expanded its program and is accepting applications for October 2021. Rooted in evidence-based research, the Fellowship was launched in 2016 and blends online learning with clinical immersion experience. Scholarships are available on a limited first come first serve basis in these areas as well as others: licensed providers working with the underserved; allied healthcare professionals; and licensed providers from and/or working with BIPOC communities.

We encourage healthcare practitioners from a broad range of professions into our program as we know that we can improve healthcare through collaboration and sharing perspectives amongst all providers, said Mimi Guarneri, MD, FACC, ABOIM, Founding AIHM President.

We provide highly effective tools that can be integrated in their own practice to ultimately have a ripple effect of health and wellness through communities and cities, she added.

Fellows are licensed clinicians or licensed healthcare providers most of whom have their MD or DO or a masters degree. Participants typically become Fellows for continuing education and a meaningful connection to a deeper mission, often helping to address provider burnout and a desire to broaden their sense of purpose.

Nearly 200 graduates of the Fellowship apply their integrative approach to health and medicine in their work nationwide as doctors, nurses, acupuncturists, chiropractors and naturopaths among other professions. The online learning platform provides flexibility to take courses when convenient for the applicant, such as between seeing patients or in the evenings. Immersive experiences include virtual observation and interaction with leaders in Integrative Medicine practicing in a variety of clinical settings. This years online format allows for even more flexibility for working adult learners and a reduced environmental impact.

The curriculum includes a focus on integrative disease management, clinical immersion and self study, nutrition, botanicals and supplements, environmental and global health and more with courses building on the learning foundation in a progressive manner. Three retreats focus on the community and connection and reinforces the curriculum through experiential sessions in the beginning, middle and end of the program. One clinical immersion experience offers virtual input from expert faculty on actual patient case studies to help address patient needs.

More affordable than similar Fellowship programs in Integrative Health and Medicine, AIHMs Fellowship tuition is approximately $26,000. They offer equitable pricing through scholarships, institutional support, and match programs. Approximately fifty percent of Fellows are eligible for scholarships, with over $1 million awarded to date. Scholarships are based on financial need, work embedded within underserved communities, the cost of living in the state where the applicant lives as well as other factors.

The AIHM Fellowship in Integrative Health & Medicine was unanimously approved by the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM) committee in 2015. This means that MDs and DOs who successfully complete the Fellowship have satisfied ABOIM Eligibility Requirement 7(1) and are eligible to sit for the ABOIM exam. In March 2021, the AIHM Fellowship was also re-recognized by the Academic Consortium for Integrative Health & Medicine.

The Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine (AIHM) is a global interprofessional integrative health association working to transform health care - body, mind, spirit, community and planet. AIHM has been the leading professional organization for the holistic and integrative community since its formation in 1978. With the recent merger with the Academic Collaborative of Integrative Health (ACIH), the organization has combined forces with the most important pioneers of the integrative health movement for maximum impact. Together, they are creating health and wellness on a global scale through education, collaboration, and building a global movement.

Higher Education – Daily American Online

Nick Jacobs| The Daily American

For the past four plus years, I have had the honor, the challenge, and the responsibility of serving as a trustee for a small, specialized, health sciences university in California. Why California? My involvement there has been both serendipitous and, from a business and volunteer perspective, very understandable.

While working in California with the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine and Cedars Sinai Medical Center, I recognized that the philosophy of this university coincided with my own. They were teaching the best of western medicine and high genomic science combined with the most effective practices found in world medicine. That covers the business and volunteer perspective.

More unexpectedly, however, there also turned out to be a Western Pennsylvania and specifically a Somerset County connection with the current leadership at the university. The president had an aunt, uncle, and cousin from Somerset, all of whom had been friends of mine decades ago.

In my capacity as a trustee and member of the executive committee, Ive been watching and reading with interest about declining national college enrollments and rising tuition and housing costs, specifically in Pennsylvania. Then, of course, came COVID and all the pandemic-related challenges that all universities have endured these past 15 plus months. One of my alma maters went from about 15,000 to fewer than 7,000 students in the past several years.

In an article titled, A Seismic Shift in Higher Ed by Bill OToole in the Pittsburgh Quarterly, the challenges of this perfect storm were explicitly delineated as he provided the details about the shortfalls coming from the numerous variables, both seen and unforeseen.

According to this quotation in OTooles piece by Drew Wilson, director of media relations at Carlow University, The number of traditional college age students in Pennsylvania has been declining for several years now. There is a dramatic reduction in the number of high school students coming in 2025. So much so that it is referred to as the cliff in higher education circles. The cliff was going to affect higher education whether or not the pandemic occurred.

Having been a more-than-part-time resident of Pittsburgh for the past decade and an observer of the campuses of the numerous universities located within a few miles of our Pittsburgh residence, there was another obvious disruption that was not only foreseeable but also potentially predictably devastating. When the previous administration began imposing severe immigration restrictions, there was a precipitous decline in the number of international students visible on the various campuses.

Not unlike the Amish who pay cash for their healthcare, the majority of students from foreign countries pay full cost for their tuition. Also, according to OToole and Mike Hansen, director and chair of the Brown Center for Education Policy at the Brookings Institution, Essentially they are subsidizing the other students. This, along with the other challenges described above, will most assuredly impact the economy of several of our university towns for decades to come.

Then theres accumulated student debt. The primary reason this debt has become unbearable for many families is that our Pennsylvania legislators have endorsed a series of decisions that have resulted in Pennsylvania being ranked 46th of 50 states in university investments. The culmination of these decisions has resulted in an increased financial burden on the students and parents of those students interested in attending college in the state. This translates into an over 200 percent tuition increase since 2000.

Considering the United States, a land made up of immigrants from all over the world, has always succeeded because of the strength of our superior universities, our entrepreneurial spirit, and our ability to always come up with cutting-edge ideas and inventions, we are most assuredly at a precipice. Do we give up on ideas, infrastructure, education, and immigration? Do we continue to embrace division and misleading theories?

It seems like such a simple choice. Or not.

What foods and drinks can help relieve a headache? – Medical News Today

Headaches are a common form of pain. There are many types of headaches, and they may be temporary or come and go for longer periods of time.

Food and drink may play a role in headaches. Some food and drinks may be especially helpful for headaches, such as water, antioxidant-rich foods, and ingredients such as caffeine.

Other foods may trigger headaches. People who deal with regular headaches can work with their doctor to help identify any underlying causes, including identifying and eliminating trigger foods, to help relieve their headaches.

In this article, we look at how different foods affect headaches, and explain how to identify food and drink related headache triggers.

Headaches are a type of pain that affects the head. Doctors classify headaches by the type of pain and location of the pain.

Headaches may be primary headaches, meaning they appear on their own and have no related conditions, or secondary headaches, which appear due to an underlying condition.

The International Classification of Headache Disorders helps classify over 150 types of primary and secondary headache disorders.

Some of the more familiar headaches include:

The frequency and severity of headache pain can vary greatly. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke notes that some people may experience mild headache symptoms 1-2 times a year, while others experience headaches more than 15 days every month.

The general idea behind using food and drinks to help relieve headaches is to help eliminate or reduce the triggers causing the symptoms.

Drinking enough water is important for all systems and cells in the body, and may help reduce or avoid headaches by keeping a person hydrated.

Even mild dehydration may lead to a number of symptoms, including headaches. A 2015 study in the Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice suggests that drinking water is a simple way to keep the body hydrated and reduce or prevent headache pain.

Many fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that help reduce oxidative stress in the cells and fight against free radical damage.

A 2020 study in the journal Antioxidants notes that oxidative stress appears to play a role in migraine and that some antioxidants may play a simple role in helping treat or prevent migraine headaches.

Apart from taking supplements containing antioxidants, people can also consume foods that contain antioxidants such as fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers.

Some examples of nutritious foods include:

A small 2014 study in the Journal of Headache and Pain suggests that a low-fat, high-fiber diet containing only plant foods helped relieve migraine symptoms in participants. However, researchers concluded that further study was necessary to understand the link between food and migraine.

Herbal teas may help reduce headache symptoms because they are hydrating and may contain pain-relieving ingredients.

A 2014 study of 100 people with acute migraine without aura found that a simple ginger tea reduced migraine severity in people who drank it with fewer side effects compared to sumatriptan, a prescription migraine abortive.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that chamomile may help with issues such as sleeplessness and anxiety. In theory, its calming effect may help with tension headaches.

Anecdotally, some people feel that peppermint tea helps relieve sinus congestion and pressure, which in turn helps relieve sinus headache pain. More formal research is needed to give any backing to this claim.

Small amounts of caffeine may also help some types of headaches, because blood vessels tend to enlarge before a headache.

Caffeine has a natural vasoconstrictive property, meaning it narrows the blood vessels. This may counteract the effects of the headache and ease symptoms.

Some foods with natural caffeine in them include:

However, people should be wary about having too much caffeine. In some people, caffeine may also be a trigger for their headaches or cause a headache later when the effects of the caffeine wear off.

For some people, certain foods trigger headaches or make them worse.

The exact trigger foods for each person will vary. Some potential trigger foods include:

Additionally, some food additives may trigger headaches in some sensitive people. Potential triggers may include:

As food triggers can vary from person to person, the best way for a person to find their potential triggers is to keep a food journal, logging all the foods they eat each day.

When a headache occurs, the person can refer to the journal to see what foods they were eating around that time.

Not everyone will find headache relief by avoiding certain foods. Other natural ways to avoid or get rid of headaches include:

A healthy nighttime routine may help reduce risk factors such as stress. Some tips for improving sleep hygiene include:

Daily stresses and work may cause some people to eat at sporadic times or skip meals. It may also cause cravings for unhealthy snacks or potential trigger foods.

Setting specific meal times and sticking to them may help.

Stress may be an important trigger for headaches and underlying issues such as inflammation. Finding ways to relieve stress may help reduce headaches.

What relieves stress may vary a bit in each person. Some general tips for stress relief include practices such as:

Anyone regularly experiencing headaches should make an appointment with their doctor to test for underlying conditions. Diagnosing and treating any underlying conditions may cause the headaches to go away.

For headaches that appear without a known cause, doctors may recommend medications to help prevent or treat the headaches as they appear.

Changes in diet and lifestyle can help support these efforts. Finding and eliminating any trigger foods may help ease symptoms. Eating a healthy diet rich in plants, nutrients, and antioxidants may also help ensure optimal health and prevent some headaches.

Digital Consultations During COVID-19: A Multiperspective Mixed-Methods Study in an Integrative Medicine Setting in Switzerland – DocWire News

This article was originally published here

J Altern Complement Med. 2021 May 6. doi: 10.1089/acm.2020.0539. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We evaluated digital consultations at a University Hospital in Switzerland within an integrative medicine outpatient setting. Patients and treatment providers (physicians and therapists) evaluated digital conversation-based consultations as well as the digital delivery of practical exercises. Methods: Digital consultations between March 15, 2020 and April 30, 2020 were identified. Between June and July 2020, patients and treatment providers completed online questionnaires addressing challenges and advantages of their digital consultations. Both groups documented their satisfaction and working alliance (Working Alliance Inventory). In addition, semistructured qualitative interviews with treatment providers were conducted. Findings: A total of 82 online surveys (response rate 47%) about the digital consultations were available for analyses, with 60 patients correctly identifying at least one treatment provider, and 9 interviews were performed. Patients and treatment providers overall evaluated the new setting of digital consultation as feasible and an efficient consultation format. Interestingly, the working alliance was rated as good. Technical problems were mentioned as the main challenge and the delivery of practical exercises in digital consultations was seen more challenging than having digital conversation-based consultations. Conclusion: Digital consultations were established with overall positive evaluations and with a good working alliance between patients and providers. For the delivery of practical exercises it might be required to develop more innovative digital settings to overcome shortcomings of the digital format. Hybrid settings that combine the best of both settings could be a good option for future in postpandemic times.

The 21-Day program takes participants on a journey to discover the power of living in communion with the Divine Feminine while exploring love, compassion, empathy, and inner peace. Each 20-minute daily meditation opens with guided wisdom and storytelling from Keys, followed by a lesson and a meditation session from Dr. Chopra.

"I believe the Divine Feminine is an extremely powerful force within all of us," says Keys. "It helps you grow, it helps you create, it cultivates who you are. There's a major imbalance in our world, and we can all feel it. To counteract it, we have to open the door to the Divine Feminine in us and its ability to repair and create. It's been an adventure to travel on this journey of self-exploration with my brother Deepak Chopra. He believes in wellbeing for everyone, as do I, and knows we could all use some extra healing vibes in this moment. That's one of the reasons we and the team at Chopra Global put together a 21-day exploration of the Divine Feminine. As we climb out of the pandemic, we can use self-care and self-love to balance out the loss and brokenness around us. I hope this experience will help us be our best, brightest selves, live healthier and more joyful lives, and find a piece of peace in a broken world."

"Love, compassion, and receptivity exist at the source of the Divine Feminine and when we allow these energies to emerge in our lives, we create space for nurturing and healing both personally and collectively. I am forever grateful to Alicia for this partnership, she is an incarnation of the Divine Feminine and her words will help bring people together and provide peace and solace that the world needs."

Country Ever After Star Criscilla Anderson Seeks Alternative Care in Cancun for Stage 4 Colon Cancer: Im Combining Western Medicine with Natural Cures…

Covering Her Bases

Reality star Criscilla Anderson, 41, has taken a break from family life in Texas to pursue alternative cancer treatment in Cancun.

The wife and mother has been battling stage 4 colon cancer, and has been flying from her home base in Dallas to Los Angeles for traditional chemotherapy treatments. She announced on Instagram Tuesday that she was adding alternative therapy to her conventional treatment.

Related: Nearly 40% of Americans Believe Alternative Medicine Can Cure Cancer

Hello Mexico! Today I started my 3 week journey @hope4cancermexico An all natural treatment facility for cancer patients. An alternative to chemo and conventional medicine, she wrote on Instagram. As you all know Im combining western medicine with natural cures. And this battle isnt a one trip or one place cure type of fight. Its life long and continuous.

Alternative medicine has not been shown to improve cancer outcomes. According to a study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, patients who chose to treat common cancers using only alternative medicine had a 2.5 times higher mortality rate than patients receiving standard cancer treatments.

Criscilla, however, explains that she wholeheartedly believes in this treatment facility, and will be doing everything from diet to IVs, hyperthermia to massages. All of it.

Criscilla stopped her first round of chemotherapy treatment last year to try an alternative approach, which was ultimately not successful. She and her husband, Coffey, 43, went to Spain for alternative treatments, and in April 2020, Criscilla reported her tumors were shrinking. Although she was convinced that she would be healed by her next scan, that is not what happened. Criscilla started chemo again early this year.

At her last scan, she received good news.

Great scan results! she wrote on her Instagram stories a couple weeks ago. All tumors shrunk to normal lymph node size.

She also shared that her blood work was within the normal range. Im taking it in, she said. My Dr. reminded me this chemo doesnt eradicate cancer, but this is the best I could have asked for. My God is bigger than chemo.

Criscilla first started noticing symptoms in May 2018. She was doubled over with stomach pain.

An emergency colonoscopy revealed a blockage, and then she wound up in the hospital for immediate surgery. Doctors removed two feet of her colon and at the time, Criscilla was diagnosed stage 3 colon cancer.

Then after a brief remission, she received the devastating news that she had stage 4, or metastatic, colon cancer. The cancer has spread throughout my para-aortic region and has begun growing up my back, she announced via Instagram.

Experts say that there are multiple treatment options available for patients with advanced disease, and there have been improvements made in survival.

Dr. Heather Yeo from Weill Cornell Medicine explains advanced colon cancer with SurvivorNet.

Stage 4 colorectal cancer means that the cancer has spread away from the colon to a distant part in the body or to another organ nearby, she says. Sometimes with different chemotherapy and surgical treatment, you can get patients to have complete cure. Their chance of survival is lower than stage 3. But we still get cures even in stage 4 patients, which I think is really exciting.

Many people, patients included, are often confused by the term alternative when it comes to medicine.

Dr. Jason Westin, an oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center, explains alternative vs. complementary medicine to SurvivorNet.

Integrative medicine is an approach to care that puts the patient in the center of care and everything flows from that, Dr. Westin explains to us. It emphasizes lifestyle behavior, like diet, stress management, nutrition, and it also blends the best of conventional medicine and complementary therapies. So its not about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It very much believes in the power of conventional medicine, but its trying to bring in other evidence-based approaches, and to optimize peoples health and well-being.

Related: Magic Mushrooms Go Mainstream: Can They Really Help Cancer Patients With Depression & Anxiety?

Alternative medicine is thought about therapies that are in place of conventional care, Dr. Westin says. Complementary medicine, which came out of Europe, is really a wide variety of therapies and approaches, from mind-body approaches, to Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, diet and nutrition. And then integrative medicine is a combination of the best of conventional medicine and complementary medicine, but places the patient in the center.

Interestingly enough, roughly four in 10 Americans (39%) believe cancer can be cured solely through alternative therapies such as enzyme and oxygen therapy, diet, vitamins and minerals, according to a national survey conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

However, a study from the Yale School of Medicine in 2018 found that people who use complementary methodswhich is usually a term for vitamins, herbs, special diets, Reiki, acupuncture, and meditationare more likely to refuse standard cancer treatments, and sadly, more likely to die because of it. Other experts say this study is flawed because integrative medicine is really just added to standard treatment to cope with side effects.

Flare Therapeutics Launches with $82 Million Series A Financing to Advance Precision Oncology Pipeline based on Novel Drug Discovery Approach for…

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Flare Therapeutics, a biotechnology company targeting transcription factors to discover precision medicines for cancer and other diseases, today announced its launch and Series A financing of $82 million. The Series A was led by Third Rock Ventures with significant support by Boxer Capital, Nextech Invest, Casdin Capital, Invus Financial Advisors and Eventide Asset Management. Flare is targeting transcription factors through switch sites newly identified druggable regions that control predictable and profound changes in gene expression as a fundamentally new way to discover novel small molecule medicines to treat the multitude of diseases driven by transcription factor dysregulation.

We created Flare to pursue the mission of conquering transcription factors which have been one of the most sought-after targets of drug developers based on the central role they play in cancer and other diseases, said Abbie Celniker, PhD, interim chief executive officer of Flare and partner at Third Rock Ventures. The outstanding scientific team and co-founders we have brought together have already made strong progress to show how the unique biochemistry of the switch site serves as key targets for transcription factor regulation, translating into powerful biology and a new path for life-changing medicines for patients.

Flares switch-site based drug discovery approach has resulted in an emerging pipeline of drug programs targeting transcription factor dysregulation and mutations that are known to be pivotal drivers of cancer. The Series A will support Flares further advancement of its lead program in precision oncology toward the clinic. In addition, the company will continue to build its unique engine and proprietary assays to discover small molecules that target transcription factors at switch sites.

Over the past decade, there has been a constant flow of scientific discoveries showing evermore pointedly how transcription factors play a central role in diseases, notably cancer. Yet, transcription factors have continued to be elusive for finding targetable sites for drug discovery, with less than 1% of transcription factors successfully targeted for medicines, said Fraydoon Rastinejad, PhD, professor of biochemistry and structural biology, University of Oxford, and a scientific co-founder of Flare. Flares team and innovative approach are well positioned to realize the enormous potential of targeting transcription factors as a gateway to many new medicines.

Flares new drug discovery paradigm for targeting transcription factors is based on a broader understanding of the cooperative communication and allosteric interaction among the elements of the transcriptional molecular complex, which is distinct from the historically narrow focus on individual transcription factor domains in isolation. Seminal work by Flares scientific co-founders recently elucidated molecular mechanisms for targeting transcription factors, showing the way for Flares drug discovery team to recognize the broad potential to generalize these principles to the switch site as a focal point for drugging transcription factors in a new way.

I am excited to join the Flare team in testing our abilities to discover new, first-of-class medicines that act by modulating gene expression. Maturation of the fields of human genetics and the biochemistry of gene regulation now point us towards opportunities for therapeutic intervention using conventional, small molecule drugs, stated Steven McKnight, PhD, professor at the University of Texas, Southwestern, and a scientific co-founder of Flare.

World class team of drug developers and transcription factor experts

The Flare team has made rapid progress from recognizing and understanding switch site biochemistry to advancing several drug programs around genetically and biologically validated transcription factor targets for cancer, said Robert Sims, PhD, chief scientific officer and co-founder of Flare. Our early focus is on precision oncology based on the clear role that transcription factors play in cancer, and we look forward to expanding our future drug discovery in other areas such as neurology, rare genetic disorders, immunology and inflammation.

The Flare team brings together experienced biotechnology leaders with decades of industry expertise and deep scientific, drug discovery and development skills. Company leaders include Abbie Celniker, PhD, interim chief executive officer; James Audia, PhD, distinguished scientist; Lorence Kim, MD, interim chief operating officer; Jeanette Kohlbrenner, interim chief people officer; and Robert Sims, PhD, chief scientific officer.

Scientific co-founders and advisors of Flare include world-renowned experts with decades of experience understanding the biology and structure of transcription factors.

About Transcription Factors

Transcription factors (TFs) are DNA-binding proteins that can activate or repress DNA transcription and, therefore, control gene expression. There are up to 1600 TFs in the human genome and approximately 10% of genes encode TFs, making TFs one of the largest families of regulatory proteins. 1 Transcription factors generally perform their functions while in multi-protein complexes with interconnected biochemical activity. TF mutations are drivers of many diseases, including one-third of oncogenes in cancer and one-fifth of haploinsufficiency genetic diseases.2, 3 Despite their central role in diseases, fewer than 1% of TFs have been successfully targeted for therapeutics because conventional rules for drug design do not apply to transcription factors.

About Flare Therapeutics

Flare Therapeutics is a biotechnology company opening up a new therapeutic space with a novel approach to decipher the biology of transcription factors to develop small molecule medicines. Based on insights from the seminal work of its scientific founders, Flares team has uncovered switch sites, druggable regions that are key targets for transcription factor regulation to address mutations that cause disease. Our drug discovery to target switch sites has rapidly advanced, resulting in an emerging pipeline of drug programs that address well-validated transcription factors, initially focused on precision oncology with future potential in neurology, rare genetic disorders, immunology and inflammation. Flare Therapeutics was launched in 2021 and is backed by founding investor Third Rock Ventures, Boxer Capital, Nextech Invest, Casdin Capital, Invus Financial Advisors and Eventide Asset Management. OMICS. 2021 May;25(5):279-284. doi: 10.1089/omi.2021.0038.

ABSTRACT

This expert review offers an analysis of the global governance of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic is not only a health crisis but also a crisis of global governance. For example, the nation states in dealing with the crises of the pandemic have turned inwards, toward native and national solutions, and therefore away from the much-needed global cooperation to respond to the pandemic. This is an important concern for systems medicine and integrative biology in both normative and instrumental sense. Moreover, if we are to pandemic-proof the planet and the life science innovation ecosystem, new ways of understanding global governance are called for. This article examines the ways in which national governments have reacted to the crises triggered and embodied by the COVID-19 pandemic, surfaces the different approaches and conflicts between scientific experts and policy makers, and reveals the failure of science and politics. I analyze the uneven and disjointed way Western democratic governments have responded to the crisis and the way unchecked normative values and ideas have influenced the pandemic policy and prevented effective measures to contain the pandemic. Finally, the complex relationships between politics, knowledge, science, and governments are explored and clarified, and the way the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the long-standing tensions between technocracy and democracy. In conclusion, it is time to think critically and reflexively for all knowledge actors in systems science and innovate both planetary health and its global governance.

Three ayurvedic concoctions get scientific validation for treating rheumatoid arthritis – Free Press Journal

She said the study was conducted in four phases in rats after inducing rheumatoid arthritis and the treatment duration was based on standard protocol. "Severity of pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis were decided by the infiltration of so many pro-inflammatory cytokines, lymphocytes, oxidants etc. By this study we were able to find that kashayams exerted therapeutic efficacy in the management of rheumatoid arthritis by regulating pro anti-inflammatory cytokines balance, increasing antioxidant level and by immune modulation," said Aswathy.

The study team that was guided by A. Helen, Professor and Mentor, has published their work in the international peer reviewed Journal of Ayurveda and integrative medicine and two papers are under review. The highlight of the study is that while all these three kashayams are available in the market there was no scientific validation, which the study team has been able to do.

The team instead of relying on the readily available kashayams, decided to make their own under the guidance of Ayurveda physician Sukumara Varier of Kottakal Arya Vaidyasala. The team prepared the decoction from 28 different forms of herbs and the major difference was they did not add any substance, which is added to increase the shelf life.

With regard to the outcome, Aswathy said "our attempt was to give better hope to patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis besides a vehicle to enrich traditional knowledge with well documented scientific background for the sake of mankind."

COVID Long-Haulers Find Relief Among Fellow Sufferers on Road to Recovery – CBS Miami

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX) Around California and the Bay Area youll find them: members of a club that no one wants to join. These are patients who experience lingering misery after they no longer test positive for SARS-CoV-2. Theyre known as the long-haulers.

About 10 percent of patients whove had an initial COVID-19 infection will go on to not fully recover, said UCSF neurologist Dr. Juliet Morgan.

It puzzled a lot of us, said Dr. Meghan Jobson, palliative care Fellow at UCSF.

KPIX met two long-haulers: retired former banker Bruce Wheeler and Carla, who is a first responder. Carla asked us not to use her last name.

It felt very lonely and, after a while, you wonder: is this in my head? Wheeler said.

When Carla first noticed the symptoms of her long-haul syndrome, she was worried.

I dont think Im going to be OK, she remembered thinking.

Both were infected last year and felt awful. The infections went away but their brush with the novel coronavirus was far from over. For months, they continue to suffer baffling, debilitating health conditions.

I know what its like to be really tired but this was different, explained Carla.

Carla used to bicycle hundreds of miles and run marathons. Today, she feels extraordinary fatigue, shortness of breath and a terrible, systemic pain.

You know when you cut yourself and you put alcohol in there and you know it burns? she asked. It was similar to that but all over.

Wheeler was an active hiker but he now reports fatigue, persistent shortness of breath, nausea, brain fog and destabilizing headaches.

Many days I get up at 8 oclock in the morning and, at 10 oclock, Im back in bed because my headache is pounding away, he said.

The symptoms for long-haul syndrome vary but can also include a loss of the sense of smell and taste, as well as hair loss.

Theres also a report of patients developing serious inflammatory conditions. Preliminary data indicate that some asymptomatic college athletes developed an inflammatory heart condition.

Whats frustrating is that the syndrome is not well understood. Family, friends, co-workers and colleague often express disbelief at the constellation of symptoms, questioning if the patient is actually sick. Often, patients are mistakenly prescribed anti-anxiety medicine, even anti-depressants.

There just werent answers, Wheeler said.

I felt hopeless, said Carla.

Their situation reached the attention of Dr. Morgan and Dr. Jobson. They both specialize in chronic conditions that impact quality of life and they have expertise in integrative medicine.

What we had been hearing from multiple survivors of COVID-19 is that they didnt feel heard, explained Dr. Jobson.

The cause for the syndrome remains unclear although it may involve an overreactive immune or inflammatory response. And, while older people appear more likely to get it, young people are not immune.

We will see plenty of very young patients in their twenties and thirties who have this COVID long-haul syndrome who continue to suffer, Dr. Morgan said.

The doctors established an online COVID support group: the first of its kind in the nation. Meetings are packed.

There is strength in survivorship, explained Dr. Jobson.

During group sessions, patients share their stories. The doctors answer questions, address fringe treatments and provide expertise in how to manage symptoms.

Shortness of breath, the fatigue we know a lot of the data and literature surrounding these things, Dr. Jobson said.

Instruction is given in ways to relax such as mindfulness and meditation.

Mindfulness is actually pretty powerful and potent medicine. We know in studies that it can reduce markers of stress like cortisol. It can reduce inflammatory markers like IL-6. Dr. Morgan explained.

Bruce Wheeler and Carla told KPIX the online support and help has already provided a great benefit.

Literally in the last two weeks, I began to see improvement on the headache front, Wheeler said.

Instead of doing it every once in a while, now I do it every day, every night, Carla added.

They also learn from each other what strategies work, what doesnt and theyve been inspired by others.

I am really impressed by Carlas strength and that she saw the silver lining even when it was a really bad, bad day, Bruce commented.

Carla did lose her hair. When Bruce saw her online, Carla recounted how he said just the right thing.

He took it upon himself to say You know what Carla, it actually looks pretty good on you, she smiled.

As for the doctors, theyve learned quite a lot from their patients: curiosity, resilience, respect and tenacity.

Theyre showing us what it looks like to ask for help, Dr. Morgan said.

We encourage other people in other areas of the country to start support groups, Dr. Jobson added.

There are other extraordinary COVID long-haul syndrome support groups, such as Survivor Corps and Body Politic.

The UCSF group was so successful and helpful to the long-haulers involved, they asked Dr. Jobson and Dr. Morgan to extend it. Now a new one is set to begin this spring. There is no cost to patients.

Apprenticeships are the catalyst for opportunity – Crain’s Chicago Business

To build a diverse workforce that reflects the country and matches emerging employer needs, we must increase efforts to support students from high school through college with targeted training, on-the-job paid work experience, individualized supports, and career counseling.

Baker's experience highlights a key ingredient: "What really made it work for me was that everyone was committed to one common goal in creating a pathway for success."

Obtaining a four-year college degree is not essential for all students. In Illinois, 52 percent of jobs require education and training beyond high school, but not a B.A. degree. These high-demand fields include health care, medical technology and advanced manufacturing.

At One Million Degrees, our focus is on providing a range of supports to Chicago-area community college students and serving as a connector to employers. Across the state, 60 percent of public college students attend community colleges. Many, like Baker, are the first in their family to attend college and are working full-time jobs and supporting their families.

We are seeing employers across industries partner with educators and students to build on-ramps to in-demand jobs, especially through new apprenticeship programs. There's growing recognition that these programs can help address long-standing underrepresentation in lucrative fields among Blacks, Latinx and women, by providing both access and wraparound support.

Those supports, from stipends and transportation vouchers to child care and counseling must be aligned with the specific needs of each student. "Each individual is unique and needs different supports," says Baker, who found personal contacts for emotional support especially useful over the past year.

Chicago and the state of Illinois are leading the way. MAPP is but one of several new promising programs. Supported by health care providers Rush University Medical Center, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, NorthShore University HealthSystem, University of Chicago Medicine and Sinai Health System, plus West Side United, One Million Degrees and Malcolm X College, the program is designed to help students advance their careers in the health care sector.

The Chicago Apprenticeship Network has become a national model, with one of its founders, Aon, taking the program to six new cities. The strength of the Chicago program is its array of partners40 companies across 16 industries, City Colleges of Chicago and One Million Degreesas it plans to develop 1,000 apprenticeships.

One Million Degrees is also providing mentors to support Career Launch Chicago, an effort by the city of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges to provide high school students entering college with paid work experiences.

Research from the University of Chicago Inclusive Economy Lab on the impact of our support program for community college students shows increases in college enrollment, full-time enrollment and persistence. Our own analysis shows that our support of college apprentices contributes to high retention rates: 98 percent in our collaboration with Aon and 94 percent with MAPP.

We should be encouraged by the momentum around combining training and education opportunities. The state of Illinois is investing in apprenticeships across the state. President Joe Biden pledged during his campaign to make a $50 billion investment in workforce training, including community college business partnerships and apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships can be a bipartisan way of directing increased education and training support to closing skills gaps and should focus on expanding beyond the trades, where they are now concentrated, according to a new report from Brookings.

As Baker tells us, apprenticeships are the catalyst for opportunity. "For years, I kept telling myself that next semester I'd go back to school. MAPP opened the door for me to pursue my dream."

Paige Ponder is chief executive officer of One Million Degrees, a nonprofit providing support to community college students to help them succeed.

Newswise Irvine, CA February 11, 2021 Subconsciously, our bodies keep time for us through an ancient means the circadian clock. A new University of California, Irvine-led article reviews how the clock controls various aspects of homeostasis, and how organs coordinate their function over the course of a day.

What is fascinating is that nearly every cell that makes up our organs has its own clock, and thus timing is a crucial aspect of biology, said Kevin B. Koronowski, PhD, lead author and a postdoctoral fellow in Biological Chemistry at the UCI School of Medicine. Understanding how daily timing is integrated with function across organs has implications for human health, as disruption of the clock and circadian rhythms can be both a cause and effect of diseases from diabetes to cancer.

The circadian clock generates a ~24 hour rhythm that controls behavior, hormones, the immune system and metabolism. Using human cells and mice, researchers from the Paolo Sassone-Corsi Laboratory at UCI's Center for Epigenetics and Metabolism aim to uncover the physiological circuits, for example between the brain and liver, whereby biological clocks achieve coherence. Their work, titled, Communicating clocks shape circadian homeostasis, was published today in Science.

Circadian clocks align internal processes with external time, which enables diverse lifeforms to anticipate daily environmental changes such as the light-dark cycle. In complex organisms, clock function starts with the genetically encoded molecular clock or oscillator within each cell and builds upward anatomically into an organism-wide system. Circadian misalignment, often imposed in modern society, can disrupt this system and induce adverse effects on health if prolonged.

Strategies to tune our clocks and boost rhythms have been promising in pre-clinical studies, which illustrates the importance of unraveling this aspect of our biology and unlocking the potential it holds for treatments and medicines of the future, said Koronowski.

Without electrical light, high-speed travel, constant food availability and around the clock work-life schedules, our ancestors clocks were in constant harmony with the environment. However, due to these pressures of modern society, aligning our internal time with geophysical time has become a challenge in todays world. Chronic misalignment when eating and sleeping patterns conflict with the natural light-dark cycle is associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions, and cancer. A large portion of the global workforce has atypical hours and may be particularly vulnerable.

It has become urgent that we uncover the molecular underpinnings of the relationship between the circadian clock and disease, explained Koronowski. Deciphering the means by which clocks communicate across metabolic organs has the potential to transform our understanding of metabolism, and it may hold therapeutic promise for innovative, noninvasive strategies to promote health.

This work is dedicated to the memory of Paolo Sassone-Corsi (19562020), a great scientist, mentor, and human. It was funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, Novo Nordisk Foundation and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
