Promising to Love, Honor and Remain Quirky – The New York Times

Six weeks after Dr. Lauren Grossman and Glenn Kramon were introduced by mutual friends via email in November 2015, they had not yet spoken to each other, though they were undeniably smitten with one another.

She had a big mind, said Mr. Kramon, 68, a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a former assistant managing editor of The New York Times.

She was also extremely bright, he said, and very, very curious.

Neither, though, seemed curious enough that first month and a half to want to hear the sound of each others voice.

Dr. Grossman, 65, who lives in Denver, and Mr. Kramon of Palo Alto, Calif., emailed each other day after day, night after night for six weeks. They never strayed from the comfort of their respective inboxes, ultimately sending a message to family and friends that the doctor and the lecturer whom she lovingly refers to as my mad professor were more a quirky couple than a conventional one.

We were introduced by email, so we just continued emailing, said Dr. Grossman, who specializes in emergency medicine. She is currently the medical director of the UCHealth Integrative Medicine Center, and a faculty member of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, both in Denver.

The following month they finally met in person, at an inn in Evergreen, Colo.

It was a cold and rainy day, according to Mr. Kramon, with a good chance for quirkiness, as Dr. Grossman would soon find out.

Less than an hour into their initial face-to-face conversation in late December 2015, Mr. Kramon produced a notepad filled with dozens of prepared questions, and began interviewing Dr. Grossman for the role of girlfriend.

There were many doctor-related questions, I had never dated a doctor, said Mr. Kramon, whose previous marriage ended in divorce. He had already printed 200 pages of their emails and committed them to a leather journal.

Dr. Grossman, whose first marriage also ended in divorce, was delighted. Call it an old-fashioned courtship, using a new medium, she said, laughing. I dont know anyone who is as passionate as Glenn about anything he does.

Mr. Kramon, ready and willing to embark on a long-distance relationship, agreed with the doctors analysis. She should know, he said, since she happens to be my greatest passion.

Lauren loves life and she loves people, he added. If she gets down, she never stays down for long.

They were married June 26 at the Bodega Bay Lodge in Bodega Bay, Calif., before Rabbi Oren Postrel and 110 guests, including the couples five combined children.

Also in attendance were the married couple who introduced them, Diane and David Schonberger. Glenn disliked the idea of a long-distance relationship, Ms. Schonberger said. My husband and I agreed that Glenns and Laurens quirkiness made them perfect for each other.

The bride is the daughter of the late Leo Goldberg, a produce grower and distributor, and the late Geri Goldberg, a homemaker, both of Las Vegas; the groom is a son of the late Roy A. Kramon, the founder of a mens clothing business, the Majer Company, in Manhattan, and the late Hermine M. Kramon, a homemaker, both of Scarsdale, N.Y.

Each reduced the other to tears with very-personal, heartfelt vows.

I profess my love, hopes and promises for us with our magnificent village as witnesses, the bride said to the groom. We were upfront right from the start me writing that it was intimidating to meet a very fine journalist via the written word. You replied that it was a little frightening to write to someone who manipulates blood for a living and not pixels.

Then it was the grooms turn.

He promised to remain as quirky as Diane and David said we both were when they introduced us, he said, going on to make several other promises, such as to be your editor, your healer, and to be happier together than apart.

Pet CBD Products Need Better Regulation, Researchers Say – Forbes

Buyer bewarepet products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are freely available and sold as supplements, but research shows labels arent always accurate and those products often get mixed with reputably-sourced brands.

Like clockwork, in early July, The U.S. Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine tweeted its yearly warning to pet owners about unregulated CBD products, ahead of the seasonal spike of CBD sales due to firework-induced dog anxiety. Distrust of the FDA abounds, but the organization may have a solid point when it comes to the sketchier side of CBD products marketed for pets.

Brett Hartmann gives his dogs Cayley, a six-year-old-Labrador Retriever drops of a cannabis based ... [+] medicinal tincture to treat hip pain and anxiety, June 8, 2017 at his home in Los Angeles, California. It's early morning, just after breakfast, and six-year-old Cayley is wide awake, eagerly anticipating her daily dose of cannabis. The black labrador, tail wagging, laps up the liquid tincture owner Brett Hartmann squirts into her mouth, a remedy he uses morning and evening to help alleviate Cayley's anxiety. Recent findings from Leafreport found that 56% of pet CBD products that were sampled were mislabeled with inaccurate claims. Leafreport collected a sampling of 55 pet CBD products, and found over half had inaccurate labeling, most often, incorrect levels of CBD. Out of 55 pet products that were independently tested at Las Vegas-based Canalysis Laboratories, 31 contained the wrong amounts of CBD, and many also contained no THC despite being labeled as full-spectrum CBD.

Beyond pet products, the teams continued research also found an alarming amount of mislabeled delta-8-THC products (often converted from CBD-rich biomass or isolate in a lab) and on July 13, the team published findings detailing wildly different pricing standards between CBD products, meaning some companies scoop up newbieshook, line, and sinker.

One pet product was particularly deceptivecontaining only about 1.5% of the CBD the label claimed it contained, meaning that your pet might not even be getting amounts of the healing compound significant enough to do anything.

Instead, go with a brand that provides certificates of analysis and that is sold in a reputable store, such as a state-regulated dispensary or a CBD store that vets its vendors to ensure their products are safe.

What if we regulated pet CBD products better, consistently providing analytical data, or at the very leastallow veterinarians to properly guide pet owners?

Leafreportoriginally founded in 2019 in Tel Aviv, Israelis an online resource on CBD with discussions from medical doctors, clinical consultants, chemists, nutritional and natural health experts from around the world.

Dr. Zora DeGrandpre practices naturopathic medicine and is a medical and scientific writer and editor, specializing in naturopathic, functional, botanical, and integrative medicine. DeGrandpre writes online courses for medical students around the world including courses for continuing medical education and on the use of medical marijuana and CBD.

DeGrandpre explained that the same product caution that anyone uses for themselves should ideally be applied to their petsadding that consumers need to look into the companys history and reputation.

While different animals may respond differently to CBD, contaminants such as microbial products, heavy metals, toxins, and pesticides are often more toxic to pets than to humans, DeGrandpre says in an email. In addition, dogs appear to be particularly sensitive to THCso you should only use zero-THC products with dogs, and to be safer, with any animals. Also, there isnt a lot of research around CBD and animalsmany vets (for many reasons including legal and professional ones) urge caution when using CBD with your pet.

The effects of CBD on a 200-pound person is not going to work the same way on a 10-pound toy dog, which is why titration is a bit more imperative when dealing with pets, even though they are fully equipped with an endocannabinoid system. Source CBD, for instance, provides a dosing calculator for humans and pets, and relies an anecdotal reports from people who claim a variety of beneficial effects on both mammals and reptiles.

Luna, a pug with acne and seizures, takes her daily dose of CBD oil.

Finally, you should always use the same principle with pets that we recommend for humans! DeGrandpre adds. Start low and go slow, always monitoring the effects on your pet carefully. You want to ensure your pets health, after all! We also recommend checking with your vet to ensure that CBD products will not interfere with any medication that your pet may be on already.

The global pet CBD market is projected to witness considerable growth over the coming years of the forecast period 2018-2028, according to data compiled by San Francisco-based TMR Research. In Europe, researchers came to nearly the same conclusion: Data released on July 12 from Dublin, Ireland-based Research and Markets reported similar findings. The global CBD pet products market to rise with a CAGR of 41.3% during the forecast period (2021-2026). Research and Markets analysts attributed the rise in part to the 2018 Farm Bill, which set things off in the United States.

Some states in the U.S. are starting to allow specific provisions for veterinarians and medical cannabis, such as Nevadas forward-thinking Assembly Bill 101, allowing recommendations, sponsored by Assemblymember Steve Yeager. Then theres Californias Assembly Bill No. 2215, approved in 2018, which basically only allows veterinarians to discuss medical cannabis treatment without fears of repercussions. Californias Assembly Bill 384 would take it a step further, allowing them to give recommendations. Oregon and Washington State Veterinary Medical Associationspostedtheir owncautionary fact sheetsfor medical cannabis advice online. New Yorks Assembly Bill A5172 would offer similar provisions.

Eloise Theisen is a board certified Adult Geriatric Nurse Practitioner who specializes in cannabis therapy. For over 20 years, Theisen has worked primarily with cancer, dementia, and chronic pain patientsfocusing her efforts on cannabinoid therapies for the past five years. Theisen is the president of the American Cannabis Nurses Association.CBD products for pets and humans are still not regulated and testing is not required, Theisen says. It is important to look for companies that do independent 3rd party testing to ensure that the product label. matches the certificate of analysis. Some products may have THC levels that are above the legal limit and that could be unhealthy for pets. Additionally, some companies may have more or less CBD than listed on a label and you may not be giving your pet exactly what you expected.

Furthermore, some companies can be misleading about ingredients such as hempseed oil, which contains antioxidants and fatty acids, butno CBD.

I recommend only buying from a company that provides an independent 3rd party certificate of analysis, Theisen adds. It is important to know exactly what you are giving your pet. A comprehensive certificate of analysis from a reputable 3rd party testing lab will ensure that the product is free of contaminants and that the potency is accurate. If the company cannot provide a certificate of analysis, look for another company that does. There are enough companies out there providing transparency with their products.

In general, its on the consumer to vet the safety and ingredients in pet CBD productsfor the health of their pets, if for no other reason.

Access to medicine, food and supportive care: A clinic serving immigrant communities focuses on keys to getting people through the COVID-19 surge. -…

As COVID-19 surges across Minnesota and state hospitals near capacity, Sahan Journal checked in with a Minneapolis community health clinic to see how immigrant populations are coping.

Roli Dwiveldi is the chief clinic officer at Community-University Health Care Center in Minneapolis Ventura Village Neighborhood. A federally qualified health center, CUHCC specializes in serving patients who dont have health insurance.

Roughly 40 percent of CUHCCs patients are Black and East African, about 23 percent Latino, and the rest are white, Asian and indigenous.

Instead of contracting COVID-19 from going to the bars at night or informal gatherings, Dwiveldi said most of CUHCCs patients are contracting the virus from their living situation or workplace.

Many also dont have easy access to COVID-19 testing, which is why CUHCC has been going to their homes and neighborhoods periodically with mobile testing events.

We spoke with Dwiveldi about how the recent COVID-19 surge is affecting immigrant populations, what people can do to protect themselves, and what to expect in the coming months once a vaccine becomes available.

This conversation has been edited for clarity.

What has your COVID-19 patient volume looked like recently? Has it gone up as infections across the state have gone up?

Dr. Dwiveldi: Yes, definitely. The disparities are real, especially in our Latinx communities, our Black communities, and our indigenous and Native American populations.

The reason the disparities exist is because of the social determinants of health, which can be access to care, transportation, language barriers, and how a lot of folks are essential employees. To respond to these needs, we bring teams of folks to the communities to provide testing.

In the last couple of weeks theres been more demand for testing. Last week, in just three hours we had 40 patients show up for the testing.

Are patients who know theyre infected with the virus coming to the clinic to be treated?

We are trying to keep patients in their houses and provide the care that they need there. The main things that matter is if our patients have access to medication, to food, to supportive care. We serve a lot of patients who experience homelessness. So, having connections in the communities to provide housing so that they can quarantine themselves is key. In my mind, that is safer than getting medicine.

How many of your patients are experiencing mild and moderate symptoms versus serious symptoms?

Most of the patients are in the younger age group, up to age 35 or 40, and they are experiencing mild to moderate illness. Weve had some folks in their 70s or 80s who needed hospitalization to stabilize, and then they got discharged. The majority of folks are mild to moderate illnesses and can be managed at home.

What medications are you recommending for patients infected with COVID-19?

At CUHCC, one of our providers is very interested in integrative medicine. We have been recommending a lot of immune boosters like vitamin D, vitamin C, melatonin, black seed oil. If someone has a fever, then we recommend hydration and Tylenol. We had a patient with signs and symptoms of pneumonia. In that case, we will treat them with antibiotics and inhalers.

How long are symptoms in patients generally lasting?

It is unpredictable. There are acute symptoms and then there are chronic symptoms. Acute symptoms like a fever might resolve within two weeks; a cough might resolve in three weeks. But chronic symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, fogginessall those can take several weeks, or up to two or three months.

How are most of your patients getting infected? From the state level, were hearing the leading cause in recent weeks is people going out to restaurants and bars.

For us it is more like experiencing homelessness, living in crowded housing, being an essential employeethose are the factors which are mainly responsible for infection. Things like living in public housing, working in a crowded environment. People have a fear that if they dont go back to work they might lose their job.

There are some people who have not been able to follow recommendations like wearing a mask or keeping good hygiene because they dont have access to those things.

Because of the disparities, a lot of our patients also have uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled asthma, obesity, and heart problems. The bottom line is systemic inequities lead to comorbidities and put many of our patients at a higher risk of getting a severe COVID-19 illness.

What percentage of CUHCCs COVID-19 testing are coming back positive?

In the beginning we were around 25-26 percent. But since we launched mobile testing and started doing larger events, we are at 16 percent. I know this is way, way higher than the state or national average. (Editors note: Since the pandemic began in March, the overall number of peoples COVID-19 tests who came back positive across the state is 7 percent as of November 20. But positive rates across the state have increased sharply in recent weeks. Minnesotas most recent seven-day average was 15 percent.)

Are you advising the community to act any differently than a few months ago, given the recent surge of infections?

Religious gatherings are very common in the communities we serve. I have been asking people to not go to mosques, dont be engaged in any social or religious gatherings. Just pray at home. Also, I get a lot of questions from our patients like, Well, if I had it once, that means I had it and I cannot get it again. No, you can get it again, even if you had it once.

A lot of our community members are following masking guidance but are not using the masks correctly. So we have done a lot of education around using the masks correctly.

Come to the clinic only if it is needed. We can provide care by telehealth. Some patients dont want to come to the clinic at all because there is so much fear of, If I go to the clinic I will get the virus. While the other population, they will be coming to the clinic all the time because it is hard for them to do telehealth. Were trying to find the balance and making sure that we have adequate access for the people who need to come to the clinic to get the care, and also provide adequate care to the people at home. We have done a lot of work on telehealth education, setting up people on My Chart and engaging our interpreters to do education at mobile testing events.

Any other guidelines you want to tell people right now?

Stay home when you are sick; dont step outside at all. If you have any COVID-19 symptoms, quarantine. Take a lot of immune boosters. Stay healthy by eating healthy and also taking vitamin D and vitamin C, elderberry juiceall the immune boosters that can keep you safe.

Have you started talking to patients about the coming COVID-19 vaccine?

We have, and it is going to be a very long journey. It will be very hard to immunize the number of people to get the effectiveness where we want to be. There is so much fear and lack of trust around the vaccine. We will have to break so many barriers. I am working on a task force with community-based researchers, physicians from different health care systems, a lot of members from the Somali community, the Latinx community and Native American communities to build messaging around the vaccine. It will require a lot of work.

Have you come up with ways to earn community trust over the vaccine yet?

I had a meeting with an imam a few weeks ago, and we started talking about it. The best way will be engaging leaders that the community already trusts. I can say a hundred things and people might not understand or trust or believe me. But if a community leaderespecially a religious leader says something that the community can understand and process, it can go a long way.

We will be transparent with what the data is showing about the vaccine. Ultimately, our job is to be as honest as we can be to put the communities we serve in the drivers seat so they have the power to make the decision to get vaccinated.

Functional fungi: why mushrooms are the winter wellness trend to try – Evening Standard

A

s we prepare to head into the deepest darkest depths of winter, many of us will endeavour to look after ourselves better, what with flu season and the colder weather - throw in a global pandemic and its no surprise were all searching for something to get us through the next few months with our immune systems still intact and stress levels at bay.

The latest hype? Shrooms. No, not that type, medicinal mushrooms, also known as functional mushrooms, are having a moment - and the likes of Elle Macpherson and Gwyneth Paltrow add them to everything from their morning lattes to protein shakes.

Functional fungi is even making its way into craft beer and face serums - so do they deserve a space in your winter wellness toolkit?

Mushrooms have long been used in Asia for their ability to improve health, maintain vitality, preserve a youthful appearance, and to counter the adverse health effects of chronic stress, says integrative medicine specialist Dr Andrew Weil. Research also demonstrates that a variety of traditional mushrooms possess anti-bacterial, anti-viral and immune-enhancing properties.

Are all mushrooms created equal? All mushrooms are good for us and contain beneficial levels of antioxidants and other plant chemicals, offers Grace Kingswell, a nutritional therapist specialising in functional medicine, but those called 'medicinal' simply have greater levels.

Its still worth eating a diet rich in the brown paper bag variety, even the common white button mushroom has immune-modulating properties, says Martin Powell, mycologist and author of Medicinal Mushrooms. While Dr Weil points to oyster mushrooms, which contain compounds that can help address high cholesterol.

When it comes to the so-called medicinal kind, some, like shiitake and maitake, can be found on supermarket shelves. The shiitake mushroom is a personal favourite, it appears to enhance immunity and may reduce the risk of several types of cancer, Dr Weil says. Maitake contains complex sugars called beta-glucans that have immune-enhancing effects.

Others, like lions mane, reishi, cordyceps and chaga, are more commonly found in supplement form, as they are considered less edible due to their woody or bitter taste.

This special class of fungi is also believed to have adaptogenic properties, along with herbs such as ashwagandha and ginseng, which are thought to help the body deal with stress and balance hormones. Adaptogenic mushrooms have the ability to modulate stress hormones from our adrenal glands and regulate the functioning of our immune system," says Tom Smale, co-founder of London-based functional food brand Wunder Workshop."

Shrooms to know

The use of reishi has been recorded for over 2,000 years in China, say Patricia Lopez, founder of the London Academy of Healing Nutrition, and Nam Singh-Tao Shi, a San Francisco-based TCM practitioner and faculty member of the school: It contains bioactive components as well as antioxidant properties that enhance the immune system. It has also been deemed the mushroom of immortality as it is believed to enhance longevity.

Reishi also helps to regulate sleep patterns and achieve homeostasis balance in our system and is an ideal year-round daily supplement, offers Smale.

Chaga is known as the king of mushrooms and is very high in antioxidants," Smale continues. It also contains the beta glucan-rich polysaccharides giving it potent immune supporting properties.

Cordyceps is deemed a kidney and lung tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), explains Lopez, it is best known to support improved stamina and studies have backed its ability to support athletic performance.

Smale agrees, suggesting adding a teaspoon to coffee 30 minutes before exercise to help your body deal with training stress. Cordyceps has been proven to increase aerobic capacity and respiratory function and help with oxygen flow in the brain, he says.

Lions mane is typically taken to support nerves and brain function, Powell says, it may help to promote focus and energy.

Healing (and warming) elixirs

So, how best to reap all of these benefits? When buying supplements, look for organic and wild-foraged mushroom sources, advises Lopez, who suggests adding them to warm elixirs, stews, sauts, or porridge to promote better digestion.

Wellness types are increasingly spiking their morning coffees with shrooms, too. Wunder Workshops Superior Chaga (25) is sustainably wild-harvested from birch trees in the Greater Khingan Mountains in northeast China and dual-extracted, a process which removes the fibrous proteins from the mushroom to give better access to the nutrients. Its the perfect coffee substitute in terms of flavour or you can add it to your coffee for faster absorption. Equally mix it with hot water and a bit of milk, and its not too dissimilar to your regular cup of tea," Smale says.

Glow Bar now sells a variety of mushroom powders, including coffee alternative chaga-ccino (30, glowbar.co.uk), which blends wild chaga and raw cacao, for a mocha with a difference. The brand advises you consult with a doctor before using its products if you are on any medications or are undergoing medical treatment.

Bottoms up

Cutting down on booze? Fungtn, a new alcohol-free craft beer brand born out of the first lockdown, has launched the UKs first range of 0.5% ABV lagers and IPAs brewed with functional mushrooms, including lions mane, reishi and chaga (18/case of six, fungtn.com). The brand says its tapping into the new wave of mindful drinkers - and the addition of myco adaptogens apparently enhances the depth, body and mouthfeel of the beer without the need for additives commonly used in non-alcoholic beers.

Super-charged skincare

Beauty buffs are also getting in on the shroom action. Dr Weil teamed up with Origins to create the brands now best-selling Mega-Mushroom Relief & Resilience range which features products designed to nourish the skins natural barrier and soothe inflamed skin - one bottle of the Soothing Treatment Lotion (32, origins.co.uk) is sold every eight seconds. Studies on several unique mushroom species show promising anti-inflammatory effects, and the topical use of anti-inflammatory mushrooms may help protect the skin against damage from environmental stressors, Dr Weil says.

Meanwhile, snow mushroom, also known as tremella fuciformis, is another fungus-derived active ingredient making its way onto your shelfie. It acts in a similar way to hyaluronic acid to quench parched skin, lock in moisture and support healthy ageing. Further, the Company will work quickly to expand on the current offering of services by leveraging its existing telemedicine infrastructure to provide access to patients across the state of Washington. The Company will also evaluate the current services offered to determine growth in new and complimentary medical services, add new lines of revenue from insurable services, and expand overall patient care. The Company will also launch its subscription-based telemedicine offering at $199/year designed to support the needs of uninsured American with urgent and acute care needs.

Our goal remains committed to establishing a national network of healthcare clinics to help millions of American gain access to affordable and accessible quality care, said Prad Sekar, CEO, CB2 Insights. With the expansion into Washington by way of acquisition, we welcome the opportunity to leverage our multi-disciplinary model to expand quickly on the services delivered by JMC to include telemedicine, sub-specialty, allied health and other complementary services for current and new patients of the practice.

JMC represents the second acquisition by the Company since its recently announced oversubscribed private placement of CAD 5.13 million in September 2020. The acquisition is also part of a 3-pronged growth model which includes growth from the current infrastructure, new services and acquisitions. The Companys experienced management team continues to develop a robust pipeline of accretive and strategic acquisition targets that are revenue generating, profitable and offer significant opportunities for growth. The Company paid a total cash consideration of CAD 0.37 million for JMC. Terms of the transaction include a customary transition by the previous owners for a period of up to 1 year to ensure successful continuity of care for patients in the practice. JMC reported revenues in 2019 of CAD 0.7 million and net income of CAD 0.1 million.

Cold Water Therapy & Hot Coffee: A GI Doc Shares His Morning Routine Essentials – mindbodygreen.com

Most mornings can benefit from a cup of coffee, but that doesn't mean every morning should start with a cup of coffee.

"Something that's become a big game-changer for me is starting the morning off with two large glasses of water," Bulsiewicz says. "I have not given up coffee. I will not give up coffee. I've just found that my body responds better when I reach for water first."

Think about it. To avoid waking up in the middle of the night to pee, urologist Vannita Simma-Chiang, M.D., recommends taking a final sip of water about three hours before bed. If people follow that rule, by the time they wake up, about 11 hours will have passed without any source of hydration.

"Your body needs that water to start working properly," Bulsiewicz says. "My brain, my gut, and my kidneys all seem to function better when I start with water instead of coffee."

Thats even more than the percentage who report using more traditional types of menopause symptom management, such as hormone therapy, according to a study being presented today during the 2020 Virtual Annual Meeting of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

This study highlights a somewhat alarming trend and the need for more research relative to the potential risks and benefits of cannabis use for the management of bothersome menopause symptoms, said Dr. Stephanie S. Faubion, NAMSs medical director and a clinician who specializes in womens health.

Other experts, however, said theres good science behind the connection between menopause symptoms and the bodys natural endocannabinoid system, even if direct research on cannabiss effectiveness in addressing menopause is currently lacking.

In the new study, researchers examined data on a sample of 232 women in Northern California who took part in the Midlife Women Veterans Health Survey.

About half of the women, whose mean age was about 56 years old, reported menopause symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats (54 percent), insomnia (27 percent), and genitourinary symptoms (69 percent).

Of these, 27 percent said they currently use cannabis (in any form) to manage their menopause symptoms or have done so in the past.

Cannabis products were most often used to address hot flashes and night sweats, researchers said.

These findings suggest that cannabis use to manage menopause symptoms may be relatively common, said Carolyn Gibson, PhD, a psychologist and health services researcher at the San Francisco Veterans Administration (VA) Health Care System and lead author of the study.

However, we do not know whether cannabis use is safe or effective for menopause symptom management or whether women are discussing these decisions with their healthcare providers particularly in the VA, where cannabis is considered an illegal substance under federal guidelines.

The study didnt differentiate between use of cannabis products containing the full spectrum of cannabis ingredients, including psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and those containing therapeutic doses of cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabioids but not THC.

An additional 10 percent of the female veterans expressed an interest in trying cannabis to manage their symptoms.

By comparison, just 19 percent said they used hormone therapy or other, more mainstream interventions to manage their menopause symptoms.

This is disturbing because hormone therapy is the most effective therapy we have for menopause symptoms, and the benefits typically outweigh the risks for women in their 50s and within 10 years of menopause, Faubion told Healthline. Cannabis, on the other hand, is not a proven therapy for menopause.

Cannabis use for menopause symptoms was consistent across demographic categories, including age, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and mental health conditions.

Smoking cannabis or consuming gummies or other products containing the full spectrum of cannabis ingredients, including psychoactive THC, could have mixed results for women seeking relief from menopause.

Cannabis is known to have a sedating effect, so it may have a positive effect on sleep disturbance and reduce symptoms of anxiety, but there is also evidence that cannabis use can result in lethargy, increased anxiety, and can provoke serious psychiatric illness, Samantha Miller, spokesperson for Drug Helpline, told Healthline.

Menopause is associated with cognitive changes, feelings of brain fog and difficulty concentrating. These are also side effects of cannabis use, so using cannabis might actually make these symptoms worse, she explained.

Mood changes and irritability are often prominent features during the menopause, which may be counteracted by the euphoric feelings produced by cannabis use. However, there is evidence of a higher incidence of depression in cannabis users.

Miller also pointed out that there are no reliable clinical studies looking at cannabis use to aid menopausal symptoms.

She notes that cannabis products may be illegal in some jurisdictions and are unevenly regulated.

It would be advisable to obtain these products from a reliable source and start at a low dose to assess any adverse effects, she said.

Anecdotally, however, many women have found cannabis products to be effective in treating menopause symptoms particularly insomnia and hot flashes according to Dr. Junella Chin, the chief medical advisor at CannabisMD.

Hot flashes are due to the hormonal ups and downs of menopause, Chin told Healthline. Estrogen is involved with the bodys endocannabinoid system, and CBD binds to those receptors.

She added that both CBD and THC are known for their sedative effects, which could explain their reported effectiveness against insomnia.

It makes sense that some women find relief with plant-based therapy, said Chin.

Dr. Felice Gersh, an OB-GYN and medical director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine, California, told Healthline that beyond hormone replacement therapy, mainstream medicine offers little in the way of relief to women suffering from menopause symptoms other than opioid or NSAID-class painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Cannabis products do offer an alternative to whats out there, she said.

Gersh recommends only organic, hemp-based products containing CBD but not THC to her menopause patients.

She cites the comparative safety of CBD and the lack of regulation of THC products, including raw cannabis.

Marijuana can be grown with a huge amount of herbicides, she noted.

Gersh added that some evidence suggests that excessive use of THC-containing cannabis can lead to cognitive problems.

On the other hand, said Gersh, The cannabinoids found in the hemp plant are very safe and have benefits for things my patients are seeking help for, including pain relief, sleep problems, and hot flashes.

Other than lacking the THC that gets users high, hemp contains all of the 80 to 100 cannabinoids and 300 noncannabinoid chemicals found in the cannabis plant.

Some of those may also play a role in addressing menopause symptoms by interacting with receptors in the brain and in the immune system, said Gersh.

I always encourage using the whole plant for the entourage effect, she said. CBD is one of the major components, but its not the only one.

Markets are volatile, there can be no doubt. So far this month, the S&P 500 has fallen 9% from its peak. The tech-heavy NASDAQ, which had led the gainers all summer, is now leading the on the fall, having lost 11% since September 2. The three-week tumble has investors worried that we may be on the brink of another bear market. The headwinds are strong. The usual September swoon, the upcoming election, doubts about another round of economic stimulus all are putting downward pressure on the stock markets.Which doesnt mean that there are no opportunities. As the old saw goes, Bulls and bears can both make money, while the pigs get slaughtered. A falling market may worry investors, but a smart strategy can prevent the portfolio from losing too much long-term value while maintaining a steady income. Dividend stocks, which feed into the income stream, can be a key part of such a strategy.Using the data available in the TipRanks database, weve pulled up three stocks with high yields from 7% to 11%, or up to 6 times the average dividend found on the S&P 500 index. Even better, these stocks are seen as Strong Buys by Wall Streets analysts. Lets find out why.Williams Companies (WMB)We start with Williams Companies, an Oklahoma-based energy company. Williams controls pipelines connecting Rocky Mountain natural gas fields with the Pacific Northwest region, and Appalachian and Texan fields with users in the Northeast and transport terminals on the Gulf Coast. The companys primary operations are the processing and transport of natural gas, with additional ops in crude oil and energy generation. Williams handles nearly one-third of all US commercial and residential natural gas use.The essential nature of Williams business really, modern society simply cannot get along without reliable energy sources has insulated the company from some of the economic turndown in 1H20. Quarterly revenues slid from $2.1 billion at the end of last year to $1.9 billion in Q1 and $1.7 billion in Q2. EPS in the first half was 26 cents for Q1 and 25 cents for Q2 but this was consistent with EPS results for the previous three quarters. The generally sound financial base supported the companys reliable dividend. Williams has been raising that payment for the past four years, and even the corona crisis could not derail it. At 40 cents per common share, the dividend annualizes to $1.60 and yields an impressive 7.7%. The next payment is scheduled for September 28.Truist analyst Tristan Richardson sees Williams as one of the midstream sectors best positioned companies. We continue to look to WMB as a defensive component of midstream and favor its 2H prospects as broader midstream grasps at recovery Beyond 2020 we see the value proposition as a stable footprint with free cash flow generation even in the current environment. We also see room for incremental leverage reduction throughout our forecast period on scaled back capital plans and even with the stable dividend. We look for modestly lower capex in 2021, however unlike more G&P oriented midstream firms, we see a project backlog in downstream that should support very modest growth, Richardson noted.Accordingly, Richardson rates WMB shares as a Buy, and his $26 price target implies a 30% upside potential from current levels. (To watch Richardsons track record, click here)Overall, the Strong Buy analyst consensus rating on WMB is based on 11 Buy reviews against just a single Hold. The stocks current share price is $19.91 and the average price target is $24.58, making the one-year upside potential 23%. (See WMB stock analysis on TipRanks)Magellan Midstream (MMP)The second stock on our list is another midstream energy company, Magellan. This is another Oklahoma-based firm, with a network of assets across much of the US from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi Valley, and into the Southeast. Magellans network transports crude oil and refined products, and includes Gulf Coast export shipping terminals.Magellan's total revenues rose sequentially to $782.8 in Q1, and EPS came in at $1.28, well above the forecast. These numbers turned down drastically in Q2, as revenue fell to $460.4 million and EPS collapsed to 65 cents. The outlook for Q3 predicts a modest recovery, with EPS forecast at 85 cents. The company strengthened its position in the second quarter with an issue of 10-year senior notes, totaling $500 million, at 3.25%. This reduced the companys debt service payments, and shored up liquidity, making possible the maintenance of the dividend. The dividend was kept steady at $1.0275 per common share quarterly. Annualized, this comes to $4.11, a good absolute return, and gives a yield of 11.1%, giving MMP a far higher return than Treasury bonds or the average S&P-listed stock.Well Fargo analyst Praneeth Satish believes that MMP has strong prospects for recovery. [We] view near-term weakness in refined products demand as temporary and recovering. In the interim, MMP remains well positioned given its strong balance sheet and liquidity position, and ratable cash flow stream Satish goes on to note that the dividend appears secure for the near-term: The company plans to maintain the current quarterly distribution for the rest of the year.In line with this generally upbeat outlook, Satish gives MMP an Overweight (i.e. Buy) rating, and a $54 price target that implies 57% growth in the coming year. (To watch Satishs track record, click here)Net net, MMP shares have a unanimous Strong Buy analyst consensus rating, a show of confidence by Wall Streets analyst corps. The stock is selling for $33.44, and the average price target of $51.13 implies 53% growth in the year ahead. (See MMP stock analysis on TipRanks)Ready Capital Corporation (RC)The second stock on our list is a real estate investment trust. No surprise finding one of these in a list of strong dividend payers REITs have long been known for their high dividend payments. Ready Capital, which focuses on the commercial mortgage niche of the REIT sector, has a portfolio of loans in real estate securities and multi-family dwellings. RC has provided more than $3 billion in capital to its loan customers. In the first quarter of this year, when the coronavirus hit, the economy turned south, and business came to a standstill, Ready Capital took a heavy blow. Revenues fell by 58%, and Q1 EPS came in at just one penny. Things turned around in Q2, however, after the company took measures including increasing liquidity, reducing liabilities, and increasing involvement in government-sponsored lending to shore up business. Revenues rose to $87 million and EPS rebounded to 70 cents. In the wake of the strong Q2 results, RC also started restoring its dividend. In Q1 the company had slashed the payment from 40 cents to 25 cents; in the most recent declaration, for an October 30 payment, the new dividend is set at 30 cents per share. This annualizes to $1.20 and gives a strong yield of 9.9%.Crispin Love, writing from Piper Sandler, notes the companys success in getting back on track.Given low interest rates, Ready Capital had a record $1.2B in residential mortgage originations versus our $1.1B estimate. Gain on sale margins were also at record levels. We are calculating gain on sale margins of 3.7%, up from 2.4% in 1Q20, Love wrote. In a separate note, written after the dividend declaration, Love added, We believe that the Board's actions show an increased confidence for the company to get back to its pre-pandemic $0.40 dividend. In recent earnings calls, management has commented that its goal is to get back to stabilized earnings above $0.40, which would support a dividend more in-line with pre-pandemic levels. To this end, Love rates RC an Overweight (i.e. Buy) along with a $12 price target, suggesting an upside of 14%. (To watch Loves track record, click here)All in all, Ready Capital has a unanimous Strong Buy analyst consensus rating, based on 4 recent positive reviews. The stock has an average price target of $11.50, which gives a 9% upside from the current share price of $10.51. The science and medicine of human immunology – Science Magazine

Immunology through a human lens

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has underscored the critical need to better understand the human immune system and how to unleash its power to develop vaccines and therapeutics. Much of our knowledge of the immune system has accrued from studies in mice, yet vaccines and drugs that work effectively in mice do not always translate into humans. Pulendran and Davis review recent technological advances that have facilitated the study of the immune system in humans. They discuss new insights and how these can affect the development of drugs and vaccines in the modern era.

Science, this issue p. eaay4014

The mammalian immune system is a remarkable sensory system for the detection and neutralization of pathogens. History is replete with the devastating effects of plagues, and the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a defining global health crisis of our time. Although the development of effective vaccines has saved many lives, the basic workings of the immune system are complex and require the development of animal models, such as inbred mice. Indeed, research in mice has been enormously productive, and the tremendous insights gleaned have resulted in many Nobel prizes and other accolades. However, past results are not necessarily a reliable guide to the future, and a notable limitation of animal models has been their failure to accurately model some human diseases and their inability to predict human immune responses in many cases. With regard to inbred mice, which have been the principal model of choice for immunology, this is likely due to the compromises that were necessary to create a more tractable and reproducible system for experimentation, such as genetic uniformity and lack of pathogen exposure, as well as the fact that mice are evolutionarily quite distinct. These considerations suggest that direct studies of the human immune system are likely to be extremely rewarding, both from a scientific and a medical perspective.

In the past decade there has been an explosion of new approaches and technologies to explore the human immune system with unprecedented precision. Insights into the human immune response to vaccination, cancers, and viral infections such as COVID-19 have come from high-throughput omics technologies that measure the behavior of genes, mRNA (single-cell transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics), metabolites (metabolomics), cells (mass cytometry), and epigenetic modifications (ATAC-seq), coupled with computational approaches.

Sydney Brenner remarked in 2008, We dont have to look for a model organism anymore. Because we are the model organisms. We propose that studying the immune system in humans, who are genetically diverse and afflicted by a multitude of diseases, offers both a direct link to medicine (i.e., translation) and the very real prospect of discovering fundamentally new human biology. New approaches and technology are now making this area much more approachable, but profiling immunity in humans is but the first step. Computational mining of the data and biological validation in animal models or human organoids are essential next steps, in an iterative cycle that seeks to bridge fundamental and applied science, as well as mouse and human immunology, in a seamless continuum of scientific discovery and translational medicine. This will represent a new paradigm for accelerating the development of vaccines and therapeutics.

Systems biology techniques can be used to probe the human immune response to viral infections and can define molecular signatures that predict disease severity and illuminate the underlying mechanisms of disease.

Although the development of effective vaccines has saved countless lives from infectious diseases, the basic workings of the human immune system are complex and have required the development of animal models, such as inbred mice, to define mechanisms of immunity. More recently, new strategies and technologies have been developed to directly explore the human immune system with unprecedented precision. We discuss how these approaches are advancing our mechanistic understanding of human immunology and are facilitating the development of vaccines and therapeutics for infection, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

How We Age – The UCSB Current

It is well understood that mortality rates increase with age. Whether you live in Tokyo, rural Tennessee or the forests of Papua, New Guinea, the older you are, the more likely you are to succumb to any number of different ailments.

But how, exactly, do our bodies weather with age, and to what extent do people around the word experience physiological aging differently?

In a paper published in a special issue of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, a team of anthropologists that includes Michael Gurven, a professor of anthropology at UC Santa Barbara and chair of the campuss Integrative Anthropological Sciences Unit, and Thomas Kraft, a postdoctoral researcher in the same department, construct and compare a composite measure of physiological dysregulation among human populations and other species. The themed issue explores the evolution of aging among primates.

Physiological dysregulation refers to the wearing down of the bodys ability to bounce back from stress, damage or other adversity. Examples include how ones body might gradually become less able to properly regulate blood sugar, or it might more likely mount an inappropriate immune response that doesnt dissipate when the threat is gone (thereby damaging the bodys own cells). This decline in resilience is often considered fundamental to aging.

Were only now able to start piecing together what physiological aging looks like holistically in subsistence populations of foragers and farmers, said Kraft, the papers lead author. We first built a comprehensive metric of physiological dysregulation in humans, then compared it to other primates. Its not just the case that adult mortality rates are lower in humans; rates of physiological dysregulation are much slower in humans, too.

For nearly two decades, the Tsimane Health and Life History Project has been collecting a large number of measures of health and aging (referred to as biomarkers) among the Tsimane, an indigenous population of forager-horticulturists in the Bolivian Amazon. These range from the typical measures that might be taken during a regular physical exam blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose level to indicators such as grip strength, various immune markers for inflammation and bone mineral density.

Overall, the current study includes 40 biomarkers among 5,658 adults spread across 22,115 observations. This makes it one of the only comprehensive longitudinal studies of health in a population living a vastly different lifestyle than the urban, industrialized countries, where most studies occur, said Kraft.

While any single biomarker gives a snapshot of just one small part of health, what we did was to combine information from many biomarkers simultaneously both the levels of these markers and the extent to which they are linked together into a single metric, he continued. This summary metric gives a holistic portrait of ones biological age, by measuring how strange ones combined biomarkers are relative to a healthy subset of the population.

Noted Gurven, co-director of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project, In the U.S. and many other countries today, were more likely to die of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases of aging. But among the Tsimane and other populations living similar lifestyles, these chronic diseases are rare. Does physiological dysregulation occur at the same rate in this very different context?

To answer this question, the team compared Tsimane with other human populations. Where adult mortality rates are high, we might expect that aging of our bodies occurs more quickly, tracking closely the higher increase in mortality with age, Gurven explained. Another possibility and a goal for many of us is to maintain healthy bodies for as long as we can, and then have everything fall apart close to the eventual timing of our demise.

The researchers found that despite a lifestyle vastly different from that of urban, post-industrialized populations such as those in the United States and Italy, and despite higher mortality rates throughout adulthood, Tsimane adults show only marginally higher rates of increase in physiological dysregulation among the Tsimane.

Our first glimpse suggests a broad species-typical pattern of physical aging across environments and cultures, said Gurven. Thats a little surprising because the Tsimane have very low levels of late-age chronic diseases. But the Tsimane are exposed to harsher conditions, including strenuous labor tending fields, tropical diseases and minimal access to health care.

Added Kraft, We also found similarities in physiological dysregulation among Tsimane women and men, despite evidence in many populations showing that men typically age faster and are more likely to die than women at most ages.

As Gurven noted, its impossible to understand dysregulation and aging without knowing how different parts of the body function over time. And to date, we have had little understanding of what that looked like in a population like the Tsimane, he said. Yet the conditions we find ourselves in today, where over half of the global population lives in cities, is just a minor blip in the long history of our species. Groups like the Tsimane offer some of the best insight for our understanding of aging prior to industrialization and urbanization.

All that being said, the researchers are quick to acknowledge that their index is still just a statistical composite. Its not a complex network model showing how everything is related to everything else, Gurven said. Whats amazing, he added, is that our global estimates of physiological dysregulation dont change much once the information from roughly 15 biomarkers are integrated.

Additional biomarkers tell you little, and it may not even matter which biomarkers you look at once you hit about 20. That seems to suggest that we're capturing something about the whole system, he explained. And any single biomarker is only weakly correlated with our global index. But well learn much more about what it means and how important it might be once we can link dysregulation to useful outcomes, like functional performance, disease states and the likelihood of dying.

Additional researchers contributing to the study include Angela Garcia of the Integrative Anthropological Sciences Unit at UC Santa Barbara and the Center for Evolution and Medicine at Arizona State University; Jonathan Stieglitz of the Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse, France; Benjamin Trumble of the Center for Evolution and Medicine at Arizona State University; and Hillard Kaplan, a professor in the Economic Science Institute at Chapman University. Stieglitz, Trumble and Kaplan also are co-directors of the Tsimane Health and Life History Project.

7 Best Teas for People With Diabetes – Everyday Health

Though more studies are needed, laboratory models suggest this herbal tea, which is made from the leaves of a shrub grown in South Africa, may be beneficial for weight loss.

And weight loss is a key factor in helping people with prediabetes delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes, research shows. Those study authors also concluded that weight loss could help people who already had type 2 diabetes better control their blood sugar, and potentially reduce the progression of the disease.

One laboratory study, for example, found that rooibos may help halt fat cell formation, which researchers said could play a role in obesity prevention.

In addition, rooibos tea contains a plant compound called aspalathin, which has glucose-lowering properties, researchers suggested, in astudy published in May 2019 in the journalPLoS One. The study, done in a laboratory setting, further found that the compound may help reverse metabolic disease-associated complications. Metabolic disease or metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions like excess body fat around the waist and high blood sugar, that increase your risk for heart disease and stroke as well as type 2 diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Past research on mice with type 2 diabetes found that aspalathin helped improve glucose intolerance and may be beneficial in helping control blood sugar for type 2 diabetes. Plus, one study on humans found that drinking rooibos tea helped lower LDL bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels (though study participants needed to drink six cups a day, which may not be reasonable for everyone).

When shopping for teas, know this: Just because that ingredient is included in a small amount in a tea bag, it doesnt mean the amount is enough to have those same benefits, says Stefanski.

Also, beware of teas that tout weight loss on the packaging. Some specialty teas claiming to produce weight loss or reduce bloating can contain ingredients that increase urination, cause your colon to spasm, or lead to diarrhea, Stefanski says, for example, senna leaf or parsley tea. Those side effects arent ideal by any means for people who are looking to improve their health.
