Song: Up On The Roof – The Fulcrum

Wayne is the author of four books and a practitioner of acupuncture, Chinese medicine and integrative medicine. He is the director and producer of "On the Path to Strawberry Fields."

Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote the song "Up On The Roof"back in 1962. The Drifters made it a big hit that same year.

Other people also sang it, including Julie Grant, Kenny Lynch, Little Eva, Jimmy Justice, Richard Anthony, Laura Nyro, Ike and Tina Turner, Kenny Rankin, the Nylons, the Cover Girls, and Tuck and Patti.

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band covered the song live in 1975 during their initial Born to Run tour. And James Taylor did a version that remains his last top 40 hit as a soloist.

I'm talking about the iconic "Up on the Roof," with lyrics that begin:

When this old world starts getting me down

And people are just too much for me to face

I climb way up to the top of the stairs

And all my cares just drift right into space

Right now for many of us, going up on the roof doesn't sound like a bad idea. This old world is getting a lot of us down, and for many people it is just too much to face. It would be a mighty fine feeling for all cares to just drift right off into space.

I don't blame you for thinking that way. It's been a season of turbulence. We're seeing weather extremes hurricanes, storms, severe heat, fires, floods, earthquakes and more all within the context of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report saying we are nearing a tipping point on climate change.

We're seeing the ravages of war, as the U.S. ends its engagement in Afghanistan.

We're seeing a pandemic that seemingly has no end.

And we're seeing people at each other's throats, ready to seemingly kill one another over these and many other issues that divide us as Americans.

Can we find our way? Or is the only answer to go up on the roof?

We are warring among ourselves, and ultimately, we are warring with our own psyches, stuck in an endless cycle of anger, fear, hate, greed, selfishness, loneliness, fragmentation, trauma, abuse, addiction and more.

We need to love more, and be loved more. We need to be heard, and hear others. We need to care for others, and be cared for. We need to give more to others, without asking for anything in return. We need to appreciate our differences. And we need to slow down.

Furthermore, it can't be all about money and power over others. We must find the balance between materialism and the public good; i.e. the water, the air, the forests, and all other living and nonliving organisms. We can live in synergy with all these, if we want. Or we can choose the path of destruction.

The choice is ours. I think the answer is obvious, in that most of us want peace. And love.

There is a path forward. Through social cohesion, in which we come together as a people. We can move away from this dystopian nightmare and move towards a more just, compassionate, caring, sustainable, regenerative and wise future.

There is a way to get there. It will take political will, a re-thinking about how best to allocate our resources and, perhaps most importantly, a change in mindset akin to a spiritual transformation. We need to go from a scarcity way of living to an abundance approach.

The famed economist John Maynard Keynes envisioned a world that was a post-scarcity society and wrote about it in his 1930 essay "Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren." He saw a coming age of abundance within 100 years. That means we've got nine years to bring Keynes' vision to fruition.

Man, do we have a lot of work ahead of us. But we can do it. I have faith.

Just remember, it's all about the Commons and the public good. By focusing on these, we can find our way.

To put it in easy- to-remember terms: share and care, collaborate and cooperate. And also, as the Ink Spots, Sam Cooke, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and others sang, "The Best Things in Life Are Free." The songwriting team of Buddy DeSylva, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson wrote in 1927:

The moon belongs to everyone

The best things in life are free

The stars belong to everyone

They gleam there for you and for me

The flowers in spring, the robins that sing

The moonbeams that shine

They're yours, they're mine

And love can come to everyone

The best things in life are free

And love can come to everyone

The best things in life are free

In the interim, if you do feel like going up on the roof so that all your cares just drift off into space, be my guest. And when you come back down, be ready to have a renewed vigor for the transformation ahead.

We can do it.

The Golden Ingredient Of Ayurveda: A Complete Guide To Turmeric & The Skin – mindbodygreen.com

As always with any new product or DIY experiment, do a patch test before slathering on; just because you can consume the spice doesn't mean your skin will tolerate it the same way. Sometimes people can have unexpected reactions to the topical treatment, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Finally, we'd be remiss not to discuss traditional turmeric's bright orange hue, which makes for a beautiful mask, sure, but turmeric is also notorious for staining (your clothes and your skin, it turns out). To avoid tinging your face orange, using just a small amount of the spice in your DIY adventures. Or, you can find the aforementioned kasturi turmeric and avoid this problem altogether.

And the worst case scenario: The staining only temporary. So don't freak! "Curcumin, the main component of turmeric, is oil-soluble," says Plescia. So a gentle oil cleanser should be able to remove the pigment, even if it does take a couple of times for it to totally clear. Even if you leave the stain alone completely, the sebum in your skin will lift off the pigment eventually.

As for ingesting the spice, if you take too much curcumin, it can cause bleeding and bruising, says Yufang Lin, M.D., an integrative medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic. So stick to the typical dosing, which is usually around 500 milligrams max per day. "Allergic reaction and intolerancesuch as stomach upset, diarrhea, and refluxare possible," Lin adds, but this is extremely rare.

Theres so much going on in the markets, that its hard to know where to start and what to look for. On the red side of the ledger, its clear that the headwinds are gathering. House Democrats are still rejecting the $1.8 trillion coronavirus aid and stimulus package put forth by the White House, saying that President Trumps proposal does not go far enough. The House Dems are pushing their own $2.2 trillion stimulus. At the same time, both Eli Lilly and Johnson & Johnson have paused their coronavirus vaccine programs, after the latter company reported an adverse event in early trials. This has more than just investors worried, as most hopes for a return to normal hang on development of a working vaccine for the novel virus. And earnings season is kicking off. Over the next several weeks, well see Q3 results from every publicly traded company, and investors will watch those results eagerly. The consensus is, that earnings will be down year-over-year somewhere between 20% and 30%. With this in mind, weve used theTipRanks databaseto pull up three dividend stocks yielding 6% or more. Thats not all they offer, however. Each of these stocks has a Strong Buy rating, and considerable upside potential.Philip Morris (PM)First on the list is tobacco company Philip Morris. The sin stocks, makers of tobacco and alcohol products, have long been known for their good dividends. PM has taken a different tack in recent year, with a turn toward smokeless tobacco products, marketed as cleaner and less dangerous for users health. One sign of this is the companys partnership with Altria to launch and market iQOS, a heated smokeless tobacco product that will allow users to get nicotine without the pollutants from tobacco smoke. PM has plowed over $6 billion into the product. Given the regulatory challenges and PR surrounding vaping products, PM believes that smokeless heated tobacco will prove to be the stronger alternative, with greater potential for growth. No matter what, for the moment PMs core product remains Marlboro cigarettes. The iconic brand remains a best seller, despite the long-term trend of public opinion turning against cigarettes. As for the dividend, PM has been, and remains, a true champ. The company has raised its dividend payment every year since 2008, and has reliably paid out ever quarter. Even corona couldnt derail that; PM kept up its $1.17 quarterly payment through 2020, and its most recent dividend, paid out earlier this month, saw an increase to $1.20 per common share. This annualizes to $4.80, and gives a yield of 6%.Covering PM for Piper Sandler, analyst Michael Lavery likes the move to smokeless products, writing, We remain bullish on PM's strong long-term outlook, and we believe recent iQOS momentum throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has been impressive. iQOS has had strong user growth and improving profitability, and store re-openings could further help drive adoption by new users.Lavery rates PM shares an Overweight (i.e. Buy), and his $98 price target implies a one-year upside of 24%. (To watch Laverys track record, click here)Overall, the Strong Buy consensus rating on PM is based on 9 reviews, breaking 8 to 1 in Buy versus Hold. The shares are priced at $79.10 and their $93.56 average price target suggests an 18% upside potential. (See PM stock analysis on TipRanks)Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son (NTB)Butterfield is a small-cap banking firm based in Bermuda and providing a full range of services to customers on the island and on the Caymans, the Bahamas, and the Channel Islands, as well as Singapore, Switzerland, and the UK. Butterfields services include personal and business loans, savings accounts and credit cards, mortgages, insurance, and wealth management.Butterfield saw revenues and earnings slide in the first half of this year, in line with the general pattern of banking services globally the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on business, and bankers felt the hit. Earnings in the last quarter of 2019 were 87 cents per share, and by 2Q20 were down to 67 cents. While a significant drop, that was still 21% better than the expectations. At the top line, revenues are down to $121 million. NTB reports Q3 earnings later this month, and the forecast is for 63 cents EPS. Along with beating earnings forecasts, Butterfield has been paying out a strong dividend this year. By the second quarter, the dividend payment was up to 44 cents per common share, making the yield a robust 7%. When the current low interest rate regime is considered the US Fed has set rates near zero, and Treasury bonds are yielding below 1% NTBs payment looks even better.Raymond James Donald Worthington, 4-star analyst with Raymond James, writes of Butterfield, robust capital levels [provide] more than sufficient loss absorption capacity in our view for whatever credit issues may arise. Its fee income stability has proven valuable given the impacts of declining rates on NII, where the bank has actively managed expenses to help support earnings. We continue to believe its dividend is safe for now given its low-risk loan portfolio, robust capital levels, and our forecast for a sub-100% dividend payout even under our stressed outlook. These comments support the analysts Outperform (i.e. Buy) rating, and his $29 price target suggests a 15% upside for the coming year. (To watch Worthingtons track record, click here)Overall, NTB has 4 recent reviews, which include 3 Buys and a single Hold, making the analyst consensus rating a Strong Buy. This stock has a $29 average price target, matching Worthingtons. (See NTB stock analysis on TipRanks)Enviva (EVA)Last on our list is an energy company, Enviva. This company holds an interesting niche in an essential sector, producing green energy. Specifically, Enviva is a manufacturer of processed biomass fuel, a wood pellet derivative sold to power generation plants. The fuel is cleaner burning than coal an important point in todays political climate and is made from recycled waste (woodchips and sawdust) from the lumber industry. The companys production facilities are located in the American Southeast, while its main customers are in the UK and mainland Europe. The economic shutdowns imposed during the corona pandemic reduced demand for power, and Envivas revenues fell in 1H20, mainly due to that reduced demand. Earnings remained positive, however, and the EPS outlook for Q3 predicts a surge back to 45 cents in line with the strong earnings seen in the second half of 2019.Enviva has shown a consistent commitment to paying out its dividend, and in last quarter the August payment the company raised the payment from 68 cents per common share to 77 cents. This brought the annualized value of the dividend to $3.08 per share, and makes the yield 7.3%. Even better, Enviva has been paying out regular dividends for the past 5 years.Covering this stock for Raymond James is analyst Pavel Molchanov, who rates EVA as Outperform (i.e. Buy) and sets a $44 price target. Recent share appreciation has brought the stock close to that target.Backing his stance, Molchanov writes, Enviva benefits from an increasingly broad customer base, and there is high-visibility growth via dropdowns. In the context of the power sector's massive coal retirements including (as of September 2020) 34 countries and 33 subnational jurisdictions with mandatory coal phase-outs (To watch Molchanovs track record, click here.)Envivas Strong Buy consensus rating is based on 4 Buys and 1 Hold. Its share price, which has gained in recent sessions, is $42.60, and as mentioned, it has closed in on the $44.80 average price target. LDL cholesterol is otherwise called terrible cholesterol, since it can cause plaque development in your corridors, which builds your danger of getting a cardiovascular failure or a stroke.

Some clinical research does show that drinking green tea or using green tea extracts can lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and increase levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). Tea leaves contain fluoride, which might slow osteoporosis, as well as beneficial compounds such as flavonoids and phytoestrogens, Ring says. Flavonoids are and phytoestrogens are plant synthetic compounds that can reinforce bone arrangement and forestall the breakdown of bone tissue.

In a recent report, 171 postmenopausal ladies with powerless bones and low bone mass were placed into four gatherings. The consequences of the investigation demonstrated that the gathering of ladies who were given mixes got from green tea encountered a remarkable improvement in their bone wellbeing.

A recent report likewise reasoned that green tea may profit bone wellbeing, subsequent to inspecting bone-framing cells. The scientists presented the cells to epigallocatechin (EGC), gallocatechin (GC), and gallocatechin gallate (GCG), which are largely primary parts of green tea. Following a few days, they saw that EGC advanced bone development by up to 79%. They likewise saw that high groupings of EGC disturbed the movement of osteoclast, a cell that debilitates bones.

Drinking green tea or utilizing it topically has numerous advantages for your skin.

When it comes to breast health, you are your own best advocate – Lock Haven Express

Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, my colleagues and I stress the importance of screenings. Regular mammograms are important. They give you your best chance at detecting breast cancer early and the best fighting chance against it.

But what if something seems off and your next mammogram isnt scheduled for a while?

Thats when you need to call your care team. Its your body and no one knows it better than you do. If something doesnt feel right during a self-exam, you learn that a family member has breast cancer or had it in the past or you just have questions that youd like to have answered, dont hesitate to call.

If youve been thinking about putting off regular mammograms due to concerns about COVID-19, Geisinger is offering free 15-minute telephone consultations with clinicians from our breast health teams, including our breast surgeons, high-risk providers and genetics team. The screenings are on Saturday, Oct. 17, open to anyone age 18 or older whos concerned about their breast health and highly recommended for anyone with a family history of breast cancer.

If breast cancer runs in your family, you might also consider asking your health provider about having genetic testing done. Not all people who test positive for an abnormal gene associated with breast cancer will get breast cancer, but if markers are found, our genetics team can help you set up additional screenings as well as suggesting lifestyle changes that could keep the disease from ever developing. Definitely good information to have.

If you need cancer care, Geisinger is here to support you with a multidisciplinary team of specialists that may include a combination of oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, geneticists, integrative medicine providers and behavioral health counselors depending on your unique needs. And when it comes to breast surgery, we keep your wishes and needs in mind and offer an array of services including surgery with hidden scars, techniques to keep a natural breast shape, breast reconstruction, clinical trials, innovative approaches to pain management and more.

Once treatments are over, cancer survivors get the support they need. Geisingers Cancer Survivorship Program coordinates care between your primary care provider and your cancer team. You can take advantage of behavioral and nutritional counseling and a range of complementary therapies such as yoga, Reiki, mindfulness and massage. Support groups meet regularly, because many survivors find that sharing their experiences with others whove been through it too can be an important step in healing mind, body and soul.

With breast cancer occurring in an estimated 1 in 8 women, its common to know or be related to someone faced with this unfortunate disease. The good news is you dont have to face it alone.

And since early detection and treatment are the keys to better health, be your own best advocate. If youve got a question about breast cancer, dont hesitate to ask. Whether its October or any other month of the year. My colleagues and I will be here for you if you need us.

Can CBD Fight COVID-19? – Everyday Health

Perhaps it wasnt surprising that ads touting cannabidiol (CBD) would spring up during the COVID-19 pandemic. After all, the cannabis derivative has been touted in recent years for its antiviral properties.

But this doesnt mean its effective against the novel coronavirus. And for people who take certain medications, it may not be safe.

CBD might one day prove to be helpful for people who have or who are recovering from a viral illness, but the current data dont support its use with the coronavirus, says Jahan Marcu, PhD, a longtime cannabis researcher in New York City and editor in chief of the American Journal of Endocannibinoid Medicine.

If youre using CBD as a shield to protect yourself against the coronavirus, thats a risky roll of the dice right now, he says.

Those who study CBD have been alarmed by some of the claims being made by advertisers. The board of the International Association on Cannabinoid Medicines (IACM)put out a statement in March asking members not to amplify false information that is circulating on the Internet.

Sunil K. Aggarwal, MD, PhD, an integrative medicine physician who uses cannabis in his Seattle practice, notes that there is no evidence that CBD protects against coronavirus infection or effectively treats it, the same message the IACM is working to convey.

RELATED: Scientists Fast-Track Research for Coronavirus Treatment and Vaccine

Cannabis plants, which include both marijuana and hemp varieties, contain hundreds of different compounds. The most famous is tetrahydrocannabinol, commonly known as THC, which is the chemical that makes you high. Another is CBD, which does not create a high.

Hemp plants contain negligible amounts of THC, a key reason why companies have been able to sell a broad array of hemp products. CBD has been especially popular in recent years, with an explosion of offerings featuring the substance in everything from pills and tinctures to coffees and skin cream.

Many CBD products are sold online, with a growing number also available from dispensaries in states that have legalized medical or recreational cannabis.

RELATED: CBD: A Users Guide

Despite CBDs widespread availability, hardly any research has been conducted in human subjects. This is because laws governing the legality of cannabis make these investigations difficult.

The most widely researched use for CBD is for epilepsy, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)approving the first CBD-based drug, Epidiolex, in 2018 to treat rare forms of the disease. The drugs manufacturer, GW Research, tested it in hundreds of patients before getting approval.

For most other uses, much of the research has involved laboratory animals and test tubes. It is here that CBD has shown promising antiviral properties, as well as antibacterial and other effects, Dr. Marcu says.

CBD may also relieve anxiety and help you sleep, according to a tiny study of 15 people published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology back in 1981. Researchers found that patients with insomnia taking 160 milligrams of CBD before bed (but not lower doses) slept longer than those taking a placebo.

But as the IACM notes, no human studies have been published regarding CBDs effects on the coronavirus.

Marketers touting CBD often point to a 2017 statement by the World Health Organization (WHO) that says in its pure state, cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.

But they rarely mention the rest of the WHO statement that the organization does not recommend cannabidiol for medical use.

The chemical is not side-effect free, with people taking CBD reporting problems including diarrhea, fatigue, and vomiting, according to a 2019 review in Current Neuropharmacology.

For people with chronic health conditions, another issue is the possibility that CBD might interact negatively with certain medications.

A report published on the U.S. National Library of Medicine site warns people on the seizure medications clobazam (Onfi and Sympazan) and valproic acid (Depakene) not to take CBD, since it can increase these drugs side effects or boost the risk of liver injury.

For many other medicines, CBD can impact how much of the drug circulates in the body. CBD targets the same metabolizing enzymes in the liver as many common medications, Marcu says. If youre on other medicines, you must proceed with caution.

RELATED: CBD Oil 101: Uses, Benefits, Side Effects, and More

If you have consulted with your physician and decide you still want to use CBD, its crucial that you buy it from a reputable manufacturer, experts say. Youll want a company that tests each batch of product and lists the batch number on the bottle itself, so you can link it to corresponding test results on the companys website or via a phone call to customer service.

One giveaway a product isnt up to snuff: Its too cheap. Good CBD is costly, with a bottle of tincture typically selling for $60 or more.

As for how much to take, your guess is as good as any. There havent been studies on the various dosages, so nobody really knows, Dr. Aggarwal says.

Trick-or-treat for Halloween? Here’s What You Need to Know – Newswise

Newswise Florida Atlantic Universitys Terry Adirim, M.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., chair and professor of pediatrics, Integrative Medical Sciences Department, and senior associate dean for clinical affairs, FAUs Schmidt College of Medicine, provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions and offers helpful tips regarding COVID-19 and trick-or-treating during the pandemic. Adirim is a physician executive with senior leadership and extensive experience in academic medicine and the federal government. Prior to joining FAU, she served as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for health affairs for the United States Military Health Systems, a $50 billion complex acute care delivery system that serves 9.5 million beneficiaries. Her expertise includes pandemic planning and response, health care quality improvement and patient safety, and health policy and management.

This depends on several factors:

In communities with low case rates, it may be relatively safe to trick-or-treat but really depends on your tolerance for risk. The risk is not zero anywhere in the U.S. and is higher in some communities than others.

If your child has a medical condition placing him or her at higher risk for serious disease, avoid trick-or-treating and choose an alternative way to celebrate. Consult with your pediatrician for advice. If you do decide to let your children go trick-or-treating this year, avoid large crowds and indoor activities with others. Consider limiting the amount of time and locations where they are going. Also, make sure that they are wearing masks at all times. Incorporate the mask into their costume, but dont depend on the costumes mask for protection.

In general, avoid large gatherings, avoid indoor activities with people outside of your household and wear face masks (not just costume masks). It would be prudent to limit the amount of time trick-or-treating and especially limit the amount of time at other peoples homes (less than 15 minutes). Make sure your children are wearing masks at all times and practice social distancing. Accompany your children to make sure they are wearing their masks and social distancing at least 6 feet apart. Carrying hand sanitizer is a good idea, too.

There are other fun things that families and children can do that are safe or safer this Halloween:

The CDC has posted guidance on Halloween activities divided by lower risk, moderate risk and higher risk activities. Lower risk activities include things families can do at home such as decorating or carving pumpkins, while moderate risk activities include one way trick-or-treating with children picking up pre-made bags of candy at neighbors doorsteps, and higher risk activities include those that occur indoors such as haunted houses and traditional trick-or-treating. The lists of activities are available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/holidays.html#halloween.

With traditional trick-or-treating where a child (or adult) goes door-to-door, there are multiple exposures to people who could be infected with COVID-19. The more homes you visit, the higher the risk of the virus being passed onto the child (or adult) who could then pass the virus to a family member or someone else who is vulnerable. This is why alternatives should be considered. If a family chooses traditional trick-or- treating, they should limit the exposures, wear masks at all times and social distance as much as possible.

There are several considerations in planning any parties for Halloween this year. These include size of the party, the participants, the location and what is being served. If planning a party, its best to limit the party to 10 or fewer people, hold the party outdoors where the risk is lower, plan activities that allow for social distancing and do not serve alcohol to the adults. Everyone also should wear masks.

People should consider alternatives to answering the door to trick-or-treaters. These include placing pre-prepared bags of goodies at the door so the little ones can take one and go or stand outside to deliver the candy while maintaining social distancing and wearing a mask. If there are high-risk individuals in the household, consider not answering the door to trick-or-treaters and leaving bags of treats outside the door.

Putting out a tray of pre-packaged bags of goodies for the little monsters, ghouls and goblins may be a better alternative and lower risk than opening the door for all trick-or-treaters. Children (and their adults) should carry hand sanitizer while they are out. The most risk is through person-to-person contact as opposed though contact with objects, but its best to wash hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer.

The safest environment is home. Alternative activities at home can include family-only activities such as decorating, dressing up, carving a pumpkin, and making candy or caramel apples. Also, you could consider hosting a Zoom party with friends.

It is not advisable to drive to other neighborhoods to trick-or-treat. Going to another neighborhood has the potential to spread infection from one area to another. It is better to stick closer to home and limit the number of houses you are visiting if you decide to trick-or-treat.

Only consume candy that is individually wrapped. If you want to be the safest, you could wipe off the outside of the wrapper or wait 24 hours before touching the candy. After touching any items you get from someone else you should wash your hands or if hand washing is not available, use hand sanitizer. Please do not put any disinfectant on the candy.

Trunk-or-treatis a Halloween activity in which people decorate their cars and then go to a central location, most likely a church or school parking lot. While this is not a no risk activity, it could be a good alternative to traditional trick-or-treating as long as the number of people involved is limited, everyone wears a mask, and people maintain physical distancing. Also, outdoor activities are lower risk than indoor activities.

Alternate Halloween activities may be a better idea for teens than traditional trick-or-treating. Some of these lower-risk activities could include an outdoor party with 10 or fewer friends or a trunk-or-treat party outdoors. For any activity, it is important to limit the number of participants, wear a mask and maintain physical distance greater than 6 feet apart.

14 things that should never end up in your dryer – AOL

If youre short on time and in a rush, its easy to just throw everything in the dryer from the washer and call it a daybut there can be some major consequences for some of your clothing if you do that. So, we reached out to dryer experts to find out exactly what should never, ever end up in a dryer. And trust us, its worth taking an extra minute to make sure your machine is free of these 14 things. Here are some secret ingredients you should be adding to your laundry.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, between 2010 and 2014, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to almost 16,000 fires that involved dryers and washing machines. Of those statistics, dryers were the culprit of 92 percent of them. While it might seem obvious to never put anything that can catch on fire in your dryer, its easy to just toss those pants you spilled gas on in the dryer without thinking. Washing clothes will not completely remove oil residues, saysTim Adkisson, Director of Product Engineering at Sears Home Services. Failure to obey this warning can result in re, explosion, or death. Here are13 ways to de-stink your clothes without washing them.

While tossing your activewear into the dryer wont damage the machine itself, it could ruin your clothing. Since most activewear is sweat-wicking or even coated to protect from the suns rays, its definitely not dryer-friendly. Drying your activewear in the dryer and exposing it to all that high heat and friction can be damaging to the functional components that these technical fabrics are developed for, according to Brit Turner, co-founder of Fit Atelier. The heat can also wear away on any elastic properties that your garments may contain and weakens the materialleading to tears, holes, picks, and runs. Instead, Turner suggests hanging or laying your activewear flat to dry after washing it in a cold or delicate washing cycle. These are theworst laundry detergents you can buy, according to Consumer Reports.

Yes, you read that right. While dryer sheets might be intended to be used, well, in the dryer, that doesnt mean theyre good for your health. They are bad for your respiratory system, your skin, and moreover, the environment, says Dr. Elizabeth Trattner A.P. DOM, doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine. These are toxic and cause long-term health hazards. It is worth throwing them out and trading them in for a healthier option like scented wool balls using essential oils. Make sure youadd this secret ingredient to your laundry when washing your towels.

As anyone who has tossed lingerie in the dryer might know, this greatly reduces its lifespan. Do not put a good investment in the dryer. Heat will shorten the lifespan of a bra and wear down the latex, lace and other fabric in it, according to Dr. Elizabeth Trattner A.P. DOM, doctor of Chinese and Integrative Medicine. Treat your undergarments with respect. Put bras in special lingerie bags and remove them and hang them from the washing machine or better yet hand wash and hang dry. These are theonly dryer sheets you should be using.

Warm sand might be nice to sit down and relax in when youre at the beach, but it can be a pretty pesky nuisance if it ends up in your dryer. Sand can get trapped between gaps in the drum, according to James Peters, KenmoreLaundry Product Manager. This adds an irritating sound when drying and can damage the dryer over time. These are the9 things you never knew your dryer could do.

Anyone who has a furry friend at home knows just how messy things can gettheir hair ends upeverywhere. But one place where it should never, ever end up is in the dryer. If the hair builds up over time, it could begin combining with lint and debris around it, especially if the lint screen isnt emptied before every load. Excess dryer lint is a major fire hazard, can cause your dryer to become damaged, and also reduces the efficiency of your dryer, according to Dave Lavalle, founder of Dryer Vent Wizard, the nations leader in dryer vent repair, cleaning, and maintenance. To avoid a possible fire sparking, make sure to keep the areas around your dryer, including underneath and behind, free of extra pet hair, lint, and debris that might build up. Dont buy theselaundry products that are a waste of money.

While youre probably not actively trying to dry your chewing gum, it does occasionally get thrown in there by accident. And unfortunately, by the time you notice, the damage has probably already been done. Gum can have lasting damage if left in the pockets of your clothes, says Josh Matteson, a writer for Lula, a home services on-demand company. It can either permanently stick itself to clothes or fall out of the pocket and stretch all over the wall of your dryer. Here are9 laundry facts you didnt know until now.

If youve ever bought spandex leggings or yoga pants, you probably know that they can be pretty expensive. With that being said, if you toss them in the dryer, they probably wont ruin your machine itselfbut theres a good chance theyll shrink a bit, which could be costly to replace. [They should] be hang-dried to avoid shrinking, says Peters. Although many people will also dry them with an air dry cycle with good results. Learn aboutwhat laundry stripping really is.

According tojsonline.com, while some faux leather is actually washable, it should never be put in the dryer. Heat melts plastic, ruining your garment and possibly your dryer. This obviously rules out ironing as well. The same goes for dry cleaning. Ultimately, air drying your suede garments is definitely your best bet. Here arethe ways to avoid ruining your clothes in the laundry.

If youve ever worn tights, you probably know how easy it is for them to rip and tear. And after a trip in the dryer, that little hole that wasnt noticeable before is probably running down the entire leg. The material your tights are made out of might even cause them shrink when its exposed to high heat. The best thing you can is to air dry them, but do NOT hang them! Hang drying tights will stretch out the material and even potentially ruin them, says Caleb Backe, a health and wellness expert for Maple Holistics. As an alternative, try rolling your freshly laundered tights into a dry towel and let them dry overnight.

Lace is another delicate fabric that should never meet your dryer. In fact, according tothelaundress.com, you should really be avoiding machines altogether. Instead, lay your lace garment flat to dry so it doesnt lose its natural shape or damage the fabric. Here are10 things youre probably washing too much.

Unfortunately, you should probably find another way to dry your favorite sequined top. Sequins, gems, stones, or whatever other items that are embellished onto your garments can hook onto other items in the dryer, or even the dryer itself. This can potentially damage the garment itself and its surroundings. According togoodhousekeeping.com, Its way easier to hang dry [embellished garments] orif the material is thin or delicatelay them on a towel to air out.

According totide.com, you should avoid both the washer and dryer when it comes to your silk garments. Instead of adding your delicate silk clothing to your dryer load, the website suggests laying it flat to dry on a towel, then rolling it up inside of it to squeeze out excess moisture. After, repeat this process with a second towel. Hereshow to decode all of the different washing symbols.

Putting a rubber-backed bath mat in the dryer can end up being pretty messy. According to Peters, The rubber can crumble and get caught in the dryer, which can cause a fire hazard. Next, check out16 things you never knew you could put in the washing machine.

What Is a Holistic Veterinarian, and How to Find the Right One for Your Pet? – Yahoo Lifestyle

What Is a Holistic Veterinarian, and How to Find the Right One for Your Pet?

These experts are trained in natural remedies such as food, herbal medicine, and acupuncture.

Natural remedies such as food, herbal medicine, and acupuncture aren't just for humans. They are treatments for your dog, cat, or guinea pig, too, and they come from a holistic veterinarian, who uses a combination or conventional medicine and natural remedies to treat your pets' ailments.

But holistic veterinarians do more than use natural remedies. "A holistic veterinarian is looking at the pet as a whole, where everything is connected, versus just treating symptoms," explains holistic veterinarian Dr. Katie Woodley, DVM. They're concerned with sousing out the root cause of a problem, she says, and then treating that underlying issuenot just reducing its symptoms. For example, if your pet has an allergy, a conventional veterinarian might treat the problem with steroids, but the problem could return as soon as steroids are no longer administered, Dr. Woodley says. But a holistic veterinarian would look for the root cause of the allergic reactionsuch food or environmentand seek to resolve the issue in a way that does not come back, she says.

There's nothing wrong with conventional medicine, of course. Both conventional and holistic "methods have their strengths and weaknesses," says Dr. Gary Richter, DVM, owner of Montclair Veterinary Care and Rover health expert, who practices integrative medicine, which is a combination of both methods.

Both conventional and holistic veterinarians receive the same conventional medicine training, but holistic veterinarians further their education through the study of practices such as food therapy, herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, aromatherapy, and more, Dr. Woodley explains. Pet parents might seek a holistic veterinarian for a number of reasons, Dr. Richter says: They might prefer a holistic philosophy for their own healthcare, and want their pet to experience the same. Or, he says, they've tried conventional medicine and haven't seen the results they ideally want. A pet that's in pain, for example, may not improve with medicationbut a holistic veterinarian could try acupuncture, supplements, or herbal medicine to aid other medications, Dr. Woodley says.

Other unique treatments and services holistic veterinarians may offer could include chiropractic care, ozone therapy, or homotoxicology, says Dr. Richter, who adds that "some [treatments] are more scientifically based than others and what specific therapies are offered by a holistic veterinarian varies greatly based on their education, experience, and personal philosophy."

To find the best holistic veterinarian for youand for your pet's needsDr. Richter recommends going to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's website, where you can search for holistic veterinarians in their area. There, you'll also be able to see what unique certifications a veterinarian hasso, for example, if you think your pet needs acupuncture, you can filter the results to find holistic veterinarians that provide acupuncture service in your area, Dr. Woodley says. It's always smart to check reviews too, she adds, "to see if other people have found them helpful for the care of their pet." Perusing their website and social media might help you get a sense of their philosophy, she says, and help you to determine "if it resonates with you as a pet parent."

Australia Will Have Its Own Centre for Disease Control, Labor Party Vows – Global Biodefense

A Labor government would set up an Australian Centre for Disease Control to strengthen the countrys preparedness for future pandemics as well as boost efforts to deal with chronic illnesses.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese, announcing the initiative, said Australia was the only OECD country not to have such a centre.

The country went into COVID-19 with less than one mask for every Australian in the National Medical Stockpile, an over-reliance on global supply chains, and badly stretched aged and health care systems.

These failures have contributed to the tragic deaths of almost 900 Australians 673 of whom were aged care residents and 28 linked to the Ruby Princess debacle and more than 27,000 infections.

The centre would have three broad functions

The centre would run regular drills like Exercise Sustain in 2008. This was the last time such a pandemic preparedness exercise was held.

It would manage the National Medical Stockpile, and work with other countries on regional and global preparedness.

Albanese said Australias response to COVID was too slow, too reactive and too un-coordinated.

We cant be left playing catchup again.

Labors health spokesman, Chris Bowen, said health experts had been calling for such a centre for more than three decades.

We know that almost 90% of Australian deaths are associated with chronic disease but 38% of the chronic disease burden is preventable. An Australian centre would save lives and ease the pain of chronic illness, Bowen said.

Hazy road to legalise marijuana: The case for it and risks involved – Yahoo Lifestyle UK

New Zealand, which will go into elections on October 17, will also be holding a referendum to decide whether cannabis should be legalised or not.

If New Zealanders are to vote for legalising cannabis for recreational usage, it would join the likes of countries such as Canada, Uruguay and certain states in the United States where consumption of marijuana is legal. Early poll numbers, from the latest Newshub Reid-Research poll, however, reveal that only 37.9 per cent population support the proposition.

In India, the investigations into Sushant Singh Rajputs death has thrown open a Pandoras box of drug abuse in Bollywood. The arrest of actor Rhea Chakraborty by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) over the discovery of 59 gms of curated marijuana seized, and the questioning of lead Bollywood actors such as Deepika Padukone over certain WhatsApp chats which referred to maal and hash, has brought back a much-debated topic - that of legalisation of marijuana.

Also known as Weed, Pot or Ganja, Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world.

Around 3 crore people use it in India, alone, with Delhi the third-largest cannabis consumer in the world and Mumbai, the 6th largest.

India also grows some of the most sought after varieties of weed in the world the stunning Parvati Valley in Himachal Pradesh is a Hippies paradise, where the hugely popular Malana weed is cultivated. Keralas Idukki Gold is renowned as one of the best strains of weed in Asia.

Ariel view of and from the mountain village of Malana, India. The place lushes with greenery in the summers, but as it is at 10000 ft, conical rooftops are made to stand the snowfalls of the winter. Its famous for its Quality Hashish, 5K

India is no stranger to marijuana, a drug that has been used for thousands of years, dating back as far as 4000 BC. The cannabis plant even finds a mention in the Vedas and is closely associated with Lord Shiva. The drink Bhang or thandai served during Holi is prepared from dried cannabis leaves and milk, with other spices added to it. Bhang is legal in the country and is sold at specific government authorised shops.

Weed also has a connection with Ayurveda, which, while connoted as a toxic substance in Ayurvedic texts, has traditionally been used in medicines. In 2018, the Centre Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences in collaboration with Gujarat Ayurved University found that cannabis leaves can be effective in alleviating pain and other symptoms in cancer patients post-chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Further, research is being conducted to develop cannabis-based drugs for the treatment of pain in illnesses such as epilepsy, anaemia and cancer by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR - IIIM) in collaboration with Bombay Hemp Company (BOHECO), a startup which works with industrial hemp.

So, with such religious and historical connections to it, how can the consumption of marijuana be illegal in India?

The recreational usage of marijuana is illegal in India and is governed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. Consumption of marijuana is punishable with a jail term of six months or a fine of Rs 10,000, while illegal production and cultivation can be punished with a jail term of up to 10 years.

However, marijuana was legal in India until 1984. It was in the 1960s that the United States launched an offensive against the drug and a drive to ban it. During the 1961 Convention on Narcotics Drugs, India had even opposed the classification of marijuana as a hard drug.

Bucking under pressure, the Rajiv Gandhi administration passed the NDPS Act in 1985 which criminalised cannabis in its resin and bud form, but allowed the sale of bhang at government-approved shops.

Ironically, several states in the United States have now either legalised marijuana or are considering it. In India, various NGOs and activists have been asking for its legalisation. Their argument is that the criminalisation of marijuana has pushed the drug underground and to onto the hands of criminals who make it more potent and dangerous.

Story continues

Arguments favouringlegalising marijuana also say that it could lead to fewer chances of addiction. A study conducted in 1994 by epidemiologistJohn Anthony who surveyed more than 8,000 people about their marijuana usage, discovered that the chances of getting addicted to the drug were 9 per cent. For alcohol, this figure was 15 per cent, for heroin 23 per cent and for nicotine, 32 per cent.

Legalisation will also help villagersin areas like the Parbati Valley and the upper reaches of Kullu and Manali, and Idukki in Kerala whose main source of income comes from cannabis. Currently, with marijuana being illegal, farmers are forced to sell it to drug peddlers at low prices, and have problems with the police. Those for legalising the drug argue that by making the drug legally available, farmers would benefit from a more regulated market.

However, the fact remains that cannabis, when taken recreationally still remains a drug which could have harmful effects on the consumer. While a plant, it contains the mind-altering chemical, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol(THC), which is responsible for the intoxication that people who consume it feel.

The plant also has over 400 other chemicals. Researchers from the University of Alberta have identified potentially toxic chemicals in marijuana smoke which could have health effects. In a single puff of cannabis smoke, researchers have isolated around 110 toxic chemicals which may have carcinogenic, mutagenic or teratogenic effects, which could affect the development of the embryo or foetus.

Research conducted in Pittsburgh has also discovered that children of frequent marijuana users have relatively less attention span than their peers. Early marijuana usage has also been linked to a loss in I.Q levels of pre-teens.

Further, The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study conducted in Dunedin, New Zealand has found that people who smoke even one joint a week are prone to developing respiratory illnesses. Occasional smokers who cut down on weed, also had reduced symptoms, while heavy smokers had a persistent cough and wheeze even after cutting down, or quitting completely. This proves that the side effects of smoking weed on heavy smokers may linger for long.

Those who are against the legalisation of weed are also worried that its usage could prove to be a gateway to other, more potent, hard drugs.

Marijuana, if used responsibly, could help those cultivating it and using it. However, with India already grappling with problems of alcoholism, excessive tobacco usage, much more research needs to be carried out to ensure that the risks do not outweigh the potential benefits.

‘The women in this group are incredible’ | News | fltimes.com – Finger Lakes Times

CANANDAIGUA Maureen Lathan-Thompson is not downplaying the efforts of her doctors and other healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of her breast cancer two years ago.

She is adamant, however, that a UR Medicine Thompson Health support group she joined around that time was just as vital to her recovery.

The doctors are phenomenal and can explain the science of it all, but the support group takes that science and adds emotional well-being to it, she said.

Thats a familiar refrain among members of the group, which was formed in 2005 by Jennifer Klein of Canandaigua, a certified holistic stress management instructor with a masters degree in integrative health. She has been a volunteer with Thompson Health for more than 20 years.

The women in this group are incredible life-saving incredible, said Lathan-Thompson, a Bloomfield resident. Then you have this lovely woman named Jennifer Klein who has just dedicated her life to studying this. She is knowledgeable in so many areas and that comes from science, her education and a heart of gold.

Klein, who has a physical therapy background, said there are about 50 women in the group with between 10 and 20 attending monthly meetings. Those in-person meetings, however, havent been held since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and group members are using emails and texts to stay in touch, with possible video meetings soon.

We have members from Canandaigua, Geneva and the surrounding area including Newark. The purpose is to provide a safe environment for people to express whatever it is they are feeling and going through, including diagnosis and treatment, Klein said. We have people just recently diagnosed to people 20 years out from their diagnosis and treatment.

Not surprisingly, there have been plenty of tears shed at these meetings.

Authenticity is so crucial to this group. We hear about people trying to be tough for their families ... but one of the things we stress is whatever you are feeling is OK, and feel free to talk about it, Klein said. You need to be honest. When we gather, the first thing we do is greet new members and have the other members introduce themselves. That usually helps break the ice.

Bristol resident Sally Ess, who joined the group in 2014, admitted to being reluctant at first.

I had surgery in the fall of 2014 and a woman from my church, who joined the group the year before, had the same kind of cancer. She heard of my diagnosis and told me of this wonderful support group. She said she would go with me, Ess said. I stayed and listened at first, but wanted to leave. After awhile I said Oh my gosh, they were saying things I was interested in. I learned a lot that first night, and what a wonderful group of compassionate women. We laughed and cried.

The very best part of the group is our moderator, Jen. She is a remarkable woman, said Diane Bassage of Bristol. She is the glue that keeps this group together.

That said, a support group isnt for everyone. Nadine Redington of Victor relied on family to get through her diagnosis and treatment.

Having a positive attitude is the key. I talked to my husband and my girls and informed them every step of the way with honesty, so they knew what was going on, she said. The hardest part was relaxing, not doing anything after surgery and waiting to heal, because I like to keep moving and rarely sit down.

When the group meets in person, Klein said there are often speakers including oncologists. Other topics include acupuncture and nutrition.

We talk about whatever is current. We have new people joining all the time, but a core group that has been here for years, she said. Absolutely, face-to-face contact is so much better. I think we all feel that way. We need that connection, and isolation is not good. We are all looking forward to being together again, maybe by the start of the new year. Its so compelling to see what happens in that group setting.

Klein and Lathan-Thompson are urging women to routinely check for signs of breast cancer and have regular mammograms. Health officials from across the country said its safe to have them during COVID-19.

I was diagnosed after I went for my annual mammogram. I found no lumps on my own, but the mammogram found cancer, she said. Case in point, get your mammogram.

We encourage patients to still have their screening mammograms. We are adhering to all safety and cleaning guidelines to keep patients and staff safe, said Raquel Morris, clinical coordinator at the Dr. Laurie Sands and Constellation Brands Breast Imaging Center in Canandaigua. As with any annual screening, the center wants to detect any abnormalities within the breast when they are small and easily treatable.

Chained and locked up, why some Nigerians turn to religion first to treat the mentally ill – CNN International

"My mum thought it was something spiritual from her side of the family. So they took me for prayers with the hope that I'd be cured of whatever was wrong," he told CNN.

"My aunt advised my dad that they should take me to camp for prayers against evil spirits. I remember I was laying down on the ground and people were all over me praying. I didn't want to react but the prayer wasn't working," Godwin said.

He added that when they realized on the way back home from camp that the expected healing didn't happen, they brought in another pastor to pray for him at home.

At the time Godwin was 18 and he recalls being overwhelmed with fear, hearing voices and crying in distress.

"I felt irritation all over my body. The sound of the fan in the room made me paranoid, I felt like it was rolling too fast and it would cut off and kill me. There were so many confusing voices talking to me in my head," he said.

Godwin's family doctor eventually referred him to a specialist after hearing about his symptoms, "that's when we went to the psychiatric hospital," he said.

In his case, he was later diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and placed on drugs. "I was so relieved to know what was going on with me. My parents too were relieved knowing it was nothing spiritual," he said.

Chained and locked up

A 22-year-old woman who suffered a mental health crisis after her mother's death told the human rights group that she had been held captive in a church for five months and denied food as part of a "spiritual cleanse" for her condition.

Dr. Nancy Orjinta, a resident psychiatrist at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Lagos, said keeping people with mental illness in such facilities can impact their health negatively and damage their self-esteem.

"I have seen patients who were chained for months battle with self-esteem issues. Keeping someone locked up will not only harm them physically, but they will start to feel low and dehumanized too," she said. She added that such conditions can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder caused by traumatic or distressing events.

Not enough psychiatrists

One of the reasons people visit religious and traditional healing centers for mental illness is a lack of understanding of mental health issues in the country, according to Dr. Orjinta.

However, delaying mental care by not immediately going to hospital prolongs the time the patient stays without appropriate care and "may create the worst outcome for the patient as they have more symptoms," she said.

"There is still a stigma around mental illness. People perceive it in a negative light and as a result they don't want to address it if they have symptoms. They want to keep on hiding it," she explained.

"There is a disproportionate sharing of mental health professionals, we don't really have them in rural areas. And if someone lives in such areas without mental health care, of course, they will find alternatives for care like traditional healers or churches," Dr. Orjinta explained.

In recent times, authorities in Nigeria have rescued hundreds of people held under inhumane conditions in a clampdown on religious rehabilitation centers.

But mental health advocates say this is not enough.

Hauwa Ojeifo, a mental health activist and coach told CNN that Nigeria needs strong legislation that will set the standards for psychiatric treatment.

Under the act, people with mental health conditions are allowed to be detained, even without the provision of medical treatment.

"I don't just want any mental health bill to be passed. I am very particular about the content of the bill too. I want it to be respectful and accommodate the rights of persons with mental health conditions," she told CNN.

Mental health awareness is needed to combat the widespread use of religious and traditional healing centers for mental care, according to Dr. Orjinta.

"The media needs to come in to report mental health without framing it in a bad or scary way like some do. The same way you can say someone has a problem with his leg, you should be able to say someone has a brain problem. It should be like every other illness," she said.

She added that she is optimistic Nigeria will eventually get to a place where there is a minimal stigma regarding mental health. "It won't be drastic and it will require many people like the government, media, and religious institutions putting in the effort, but I am optimistic."

Godwin who was initially taken to church for prayers says care outside medical facilities should not be the first resort.

"There are drugs and medical facilities that can help with mental illness. I am not saying people who attribute it to spirituality are wrong, but I'd say there are other ways. Medicine is capable," he said.

He added that in his case, he wished he was taken to the hospital first for quicker diagnosis, before being subjected to religious healing.
