William Wordsworth was the supreme bard of nature and solitude – The Economist

Two hundred and fifty years after his birth, he remains a poet of blessed consolations in distress

IN THIS SEASON of cancelled parties, the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworths birth will also go unmarked in public. Celebrations of the English poet, born on April 7th 1770, should have bloomed like his beloved daffodils all over the Lakeland region (pictured), and beyond. He taught not only his compatriots but devotees around the world to be, like him, a lover of the meadows and the woods, / And mountains; and of all that we behold / From this green earth. Now the British landscapes he trudged through are empty of the visitors that his verse attracted from overcrowded Victorian cities. (Indeed, in his later years Wordsworth fretted about the mass tourism that his Romantic worship of unspoilt nature had fostered. Is then no nook of English ground secure / From rash assault? he thundered when the Kendal and Windermere railway, designed to carry Wordsworthian excursionists, was proposed in 1844.)

Wordsworth has lately stridden back into fashion as a pioneer ecologist, a green visionary. For him, nature is a single, interconnected system. Every child joins it not as an alien manipulator but, as his autobiographical epic, The Prelude, puts it, an inmate of this active universe; even as an agent of the one great mind. The fledgling poet, his mature self recalled, grasped and gloried in the interdependence of nature, for in all things / I saw one life, and felt that it was joy. The so-called Gaia hypothesis of modern environmentalism starts here.

First-hand encounters with the healing benefits of fell and vale have now been put on hold. Still, the bard of the great outdoors has lessons for people trapped inside by natural forces greater than human will. In a period of enforced apartness, Wordsworths lifelong pursuit of joyous solitude seems timelier than ever. He contrasted calm, reflective isolation with the loneliness of compulsory sociability. As his poem Home at Grasmere warns, he truly is alone, / He of the multitude whose eyes are doomed / To hold vacant commerce day by day / With that which he can neither know nor love.

For Wordsworth, solitude brings joy above all because it carves out space for memory. Even his over-familiar daffodils (I wandered lonely as a cloud) matter most not at first sight but when, recollected, they flash upon the inward eye / Which is the bliss of solitude. More than the treks, tours and climbs around picturesque locations that filled his years and drew generations of disciples to ramble after him, what Wordsworth cherished was memory as solace and strength. The Prelude finds meaning not so much in the rapture of observation as the balm of reminiscence, since The earth / And common face of Nature spake to me / Rememberable things. Uncannily, his great poem of 1798, Lines written a few miles above Tintern Abbey, talks of finding relief through memory from the fever of the world. That relief comes in fond thoughts of the winding river Wye, Thou wanderer through the woods, / How often has my spirit turned to thee.

Generations of readers have noted that Wordsworths own memory-enriched solitude was companionably shared: his poetic jaunts around the Lakes depended on the decades-long support provided by his sister Dorothy, wife Mary, and sister-in-law Sara. This champion of rugged hermits, outcasts and nomads could always walk home to warm fires and friendly faces. He did, however, live with grief and lossof his parents, his brother, of two young children, and of the political hopes prompted by the French Revolution that later shattered into what he calls these times of fear / This melancholy waste of hopes oerthrown.

As a poet of comfort via simple, everyday experience, of blessed consolations in distress, he remains without equal. The philosopher John Stuart Mill paid the finest tribute to this gift. Stricken by a depressive breakdown after his hyper-intellectual youth, Millas his Autobiography of 1873 explainsfound in Wordsworth a supremely effective medicine for my mind. His poems fed Mill with a source of inward joy, of sympathetic and imaginative pleasure, which could be shared in by all human beings. As Mill put it: I felt myself at once better and happier as I came under their influence.

During this spell of collective standstill, that power need not dimand you do not need to contemplate some awesome summit, torrent or ravine to feel it. As the Ode: Intimations of Immortality confesses, To me the meanest flower that blows can give / Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears. Look closely when out on your next state-approved stroll.

Symkus column: Some ideas for a night of offbeat movies in the living room – Wicked Local Plymouth

Over the past week or so, Ive been using this space to suggest films to stream at home that I think might be of general, mainstream interest. But I tacked on the caveat that they must have appeared on one of my annual Top 10 lists and that I liked them so much that Ive seen each of them at least twice.

Now its time to get out of the mainstream, but still stay within the rules. These 10-Top 10, at least twice-seen films defy categorization. Maybe the right word is miscellaneous or offbeat. If you were playing Jeopardy, theyd likely be found under a column called Movie Potpourri. All are currently available on the usual streaming platforms.

Being John Malkovich - A brilliant but struggling puppeteer (John Cusack) takes a job as a filing clerk, damages his marriage to Lotte (Cameron Diaz) when he develops a crush on coworker Maxine (Catherine Keener), discovers a portal into the mind of John Malkovich (Malkovich), and learns about the pitfalls of immortality.

Inherent Vice - Joaquin Phoenix plays a stoned-out 70s private detective whose former girlfriend (Katherine Waterston) comes looking for help. Based on the Thomas Pynchon novel, this is a noir-comedy, populated by, among others, a nasty cop (Josh Brolin), a cocaine-fueled dentist (Martin Short), and a difficult current girlfriend (Reese Witherspoon). The favor asked of him puts him in touch with many unsavory types, but theres humor in the films darkness.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Petty thief Robert Downey Jr. finds himself accidentally auditioning for - and landing - a movie role, and getting involved with murder, and a private detective (Val Kilmer), and a long-forgotten girlfriend (Michelle Monaghan). Then the bodies start piling up. But the clever script has the movie constantly winking at itself, suggesting (rightly) that its a spoof of murder mysteries.

Pleasantville - Serious and funny, charming and deep, this superbly crafted, wholly original tale has contemporary high school siblings David (Tobey Maguire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) inexplicably sucked into their TV set and deposited in the black and white world of a 1950s sitcom. One wants to get back home, the other wants to rescue the townsfolk from their square existences. Theres a great deal of light humor, all complemented by a subversive edge that touches on sex and racism and being something other than normal.

Requiem for a Dream - Adapted from the harsh Hubert Selby novel about different forms of addiction, Darren Aronofskys daring film makes for an even more unsettling experience than the book. Some characters are stuck on drugs, another on television (though she, too, moves on to drugs). This is a story of peoples impossible dreams being dashed, due to their own weaknesses. Its jittery and scary and erotic and unflinching in delivering an anti-drug message.

Sideways - A divorced and frustrated author and wine connoisseur (Paul Giamatti) goes on a wine-themed road trip with his washed-up-actor pal (Thomas Haden Church) just before the pals wedding day. But they each have different agendas, as one of them is thoughtful and the other is carefree. Besides revealing what makes these guys tick, the film also works as a primer on wine and how to drink it, has comments on bad behavior by men, and brings a rare dose of sophistication to the screen.

Stan & Ollie - This ode to comedy greats Laurel and Hardy features Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly in the title roles, not just playing them, but inhabiting them. It focuses on a little-known period of their lives when, late in their careers, they attempted a comeback while on a tour in England. Theres some warmth and whimsy and sadness - things dont go as planned - but also some hilarity when Coogan and Reilly recreate some wonderfully slapsticky old routines.

2 Days in the Valley - All sorts of unrelated stories with all kinds of unrelated characters are slowly drawn together via sex and violence, along with a quirky sense of humor. We get equal shares of nice people (Glenne Headly, Paul Mazursky) and nasty people (James Spader, Charlize Theron - in her debut), and as it moves along, the plot thickens like a tasty stew. Not everyone makes it to the end, but it can still be considered a happy one.

Velvet Goldmine - It starts out suggesting that the playwright Oscar Wilde was from another planet, then turns into a fictionalized study of 70s glam rock, with the dazzlingly costumed Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and the outrageous Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor) standing in for David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Something awful happens to one of them - onstage - and years later, a journalist (Christian Bale) tries to put pieces of the event together. Lots of music, bursts of energy, and a multi-layered story.

Whiplash - An impatient, antagonistic conservatory teacher (J.K. Simmons) and an ambitious, goal-oriented drumming prodigy (Miles Teller) clash, with all pistons firing. The scripts dialogue is as percussive as the drum fills, and because each of the lead characters is passionate about what they do, everything between them becomes a test of wills. There are a couple too many sideplots and coincidental twists, but this is a winner because of its belief in the power of music.

In Lucifer season three, Smallville star Tom Welling appeared as the antagonist Marcus Pierce/Cain and fans have been anticipating his return to the series ever since.Express.co.ukhas everything you know about Wellings potential return to the final series.

At the moment, the return of Marcus Pierce (played by Tom Welling) has not officially been confirmed by Lucifer showrunners Idly Modrovich and Joe Henderson or Welling himself.

However, his return does look promising, after Welling is reportedly attending a Lucifer Convention in Chicago with the main cast of Lucifer.

NerdsandBeyond.comreported Welling had been added as a guest to the Lucifer convention, which is expected to place on Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.

At the moment, the convention is still going ahead but this may change due to the current worldwide coronavirus outbreak.Express.co.ukwill update this article when more information is available.

At the convention, he will join an already confirmed line up of Lucifer stars, Tom Ellis, Lesley-Ann Brandt, Aimee Garcia, Rachael Harris, DB Woodside and Kevin Alejandro.

The fact Welling has been added to the line up has led Lucifer fans to suspect he will almost certainly make an appearance in the final outing of Lucifer.

Alongside this news, fans believe the season five, episode 11 title points to Peirces return.

Episode 11 is titled Resting Devil Face and fans immediately took to Twitter to share their theories about who the title is referring too.

One fan tweeted: Oh my... this reminds me of Pierce.. do you remember when in a sting operation Lucifer said to him 'Don't give me your resting Pierce face'..? I really hope it has NOTHING to do with him!

A second fan commented: I really want Chloe to know everything that Lucifer has done for her. And for her to tell him why she said yes to Pierce. And also the Vegas thing.

Alongside a photograph of Marcus Pierce, one fan said: Resting Devil Face still better than resting Pierce Face.

Moreover, Henderson and Modrovich have previously teased that a familiar face will appear in the new series and with Lucifer (played by Tom Ellis) returning to hell at the beginning of the new series, it is highly possible he could meet Marcus Pierce, who is really the evil Cain.

Welling has not commented on whether he would return to the Lucifer universe since leaving the show after season three.

Tom Welling starred as Marcus Pierce, an LAPD Lieutenant and boss of Chloe Decker (Lauren Decker), Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro) and Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) in season three of Lucifer.

However, it was later uncovered Tom was Cain, the worlds first murderer and the oldest son of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Cain had killed his brother Abel after years of fighting. As a punishment from God, he was doomed to walk the Earth alone for a tortured eternity, and was cursed with immortality.

Believing Cain had killed Chloe, in a fit of rage Lucifer killed Cain, stabbing him to death with one of Mazes (Lesley Ann-Brandt) demon blades.

Cain originally believed he would be going to heaven, confessing he has no regrets.

However, Lucifer knew Cain regretted killing Chloe Richards (Tricia Helfer) and told Cain in his final moments he will torture himself with guilt in hell.

Fans will just have to wait until season five drops on Netflix to find out whether Tom Welling will reprise his role as Marcus Pierce/Cain.

The series is expected to premiere in May 2020 on Netflix worldwide.

There will be 16 episodes in the final season, split into two halves.

Fantastic Voyages: Myth, Legend, And The Recreation Of Ancient Boats – DeeperBlue.com – DeeperBlue.com

For centuries humans have looked across the water at the horizon and wondered what lay beyond. Fabulous monsters? New worlds to conquer and immense wealth to gain? Immortality in the fabled Land of Youth? Stories of fearless mariners have been found across many cultures. The Greeks have Odysseus and the Voyage of the Argonauts, for example. An ancient Danish author, Saxo, recounted the adventures of Thorkill and his voyage to the World Beyond the Ocean. Irish myths tell of the journey of Mael Duin to the Land of the Living and the Voyage of Bran across a flower-strewn sea. St Brendan the Navigator was supposed to have sailed all the way to America from Ireland in the sixth century AD. In a leather boat! All fantasy of course. But is it?

In the National Museum of Ireland is a stunningly beautiful miniature (18 cm, 7 inch) model of a first century BC boat in gold! The so-called Broighter Boat was found in a seaside hoard with other gold objects and is thought to be an offering to the Irish sea god, Manannan. It may represent a type of hide-covered boat called a currach. This was the type of boat supposedly used by the Irish missionary, St. Brendan, and his crew of monks to sail to America in the sixth century AD. Tim Severin had such a boat built in order to test whether this journey could have been undertaken. The 11 meters (36 foot) Brendan was constructed of forty-nine oxhides over a wooden frame. From May 1976 to June 1977 Severin and his crew sailed the Brendan 7,200 km (4,500 miles). Severins successful six-month voyage from Ireland to landfall in Newfoundland proved that hide boats were capable of long voyages even if St. Brendans adventures were perhaps more fable than fact. Tim Severin has undertaken other expeditions based on famous exploits including sailing from northern Greece through the Dardanelles, across the Sea of Marmara and into the Black Sea in a replica of a Bronze Age galley following the supposed route of Jason and the Argonauts.

In the same way, Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl had attempted to prove that the Polynesian islands could have been colonized by people from South America in pre-Colombian times using only the materials and technologies known then. In Peru, he commissioned a raft made out of balsa logs and other native materials. The raft, the Kon Tiki, was based on illustrations recorded by Spanish conquistadors. In 1947 Heyerdahl and five companions sailed for 101 days over 6,900 km (4,300 mi) from Peru to landfall in the Tuamotu Archipelago in the southern Pacific Ocean. Just as Tim Severins Brendan voyage did not prove that Irish monks sailed to America, the Kon Tiki did not prove that Polynesia was colonized by people from South America. In fact, recent DNA studies indicate that the Rapa Nui people have only a small South American component. But it does indicate that such a seemingly fantastic voyage was tantalizingly possible.

The ancient Vikings have long been admired both for their daring and their expertise in boatbuilding. There have been several modern reconstructions of Viking boats including the 30 meter (98 ft) long Sea Stallion which sailed in 2007 successfully from the Danish port of Roskilde 900 miles to Dublin, Ireland. It landed to a much warmer welcome than its predecessors had evoked more than 1000 years before! The Skjoldungen, a replica of the Skudelev 6 discovered sunk in Roskilde fjord, Denmark in 1962 sailed up the southwest coast of Greenland as part of an experimental archaeology trip.

Perhaps the most ambitious expedition of these Viking reconstructions was undertaken by the Draken Harald Harfagre (Dragon Harald Fairhair, after a Norwegian king) in 2016. This ship set sail from Norway across the North Atlantic bound for Iceland, Greenland, Canada and the USA. A reconstruction of a Viking great ship it carried a crew of 32 men and women of varying nationalities. The Draken Harald Harfagre is an open, clinker-built ship 35 meters (115 ft) from stem to stern, the largest reconstruction of a Viking-era ship to date. One of the aims of its builders was to explore the world as the Vikings did in the past, following the journey of the famous Leif Erikson who is believed by some to be the first European to land in America. The Drakens landfall in Newfoundland was at St Anthonys Harbour near the site of the Viking-era settlement at Lanse aux Meadows.

Amazingly, one reconstruction of an ancient vessel is actually a commissioned ship in the Hellenic Navy of Greece. This is the Olympias, a replica of an Athenian trireme. The trireme was the dominant warship in the Mediterranean during the 7th-4th centuries BC. They had three rows of oars to give them speed and maneuverability with a bronze bow ram to attack enemy ships. The Olympias bow ram weighs 200 kg (441 lbs) and is a copy of an original ram now in the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, Greece. Built of Douglas fir and Virginia oak the Olympias underwent several successful sea trials with a volunteer crew of 170 oarsmen and women.

Archaeologists, scientists and adventurers have recreated ancient ships from a Greek trireme (warship) to St Brendans leather boat in order to test if, and how, these vessels might have sailed. Learning about the past and these fantastic sea voyages has never been more exciting!

20 Actors Who Would’ve Been Great In These MCU Roles | TheThings – TheThings

The MCU is arguably the most formidable force in the entertainment industry, and beginning in 2020, the MCU will enter its fourth phase as it builds towards another incredible saga. The first three phases of the MCU all gave way to one of the most incredible spectacles in film history, with Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

Among all the other things that Marvel did well as they marched towards immortality, the casting of their biggest roles is perhaps the most impressive aspect of the MCU. The cast that they selected has been exceptional in their roles, but this has not stopped people from dreaming of some other performers who could have been great, as well.

Today, we are going to look at 20 performers who could have been great in these iconic MCU roles! Hopefully, these performers will end up appearing in the MCU in some capacity.

Jensen Ackles is known for his time on the series Supernatural, but this has not stopped people from casting him as Hawkeye in the MCU. Ackles has a ruggedness to him that he could bring to the character and his charm could have helped bring some levity to Hawkeye as well.

Eliza Dushku is a tremendous actress that has been in the game for some time, and she would have been a good fit in this role. She has the looks to make it work, but more importantly, she has the talent and the spy girl history. Need proof? Go watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Billy Crudup is a fantastic performer that already has experience playing a scientist. Superhero fans no doubt remember him taking on the character of Dr. Manhattan in the film Watchmen. Crudup would have been a great Bruce Banner, as he can play just about any character that is required of him.

Having appeared in films like Baby Driver and Mama Mia! Here We Go Again, Lily James has shown that she is capable of doing a little bit of everything on the big screen. She could have brought a unique take on that character of Captain Marvel, and fans would have loved this.

Terrence Howard was the original War Machine, but he would be replaced by on Cheadle. We think that Michael Ealy could have been great in the role. He may look younger, but he is as smooth as Terrence Howard and he could have built a great rapport with Robert Downey Jr.

Unless a person has been living under a rock the last two or three years, they would have noticed that Saoirse Ronan has been turning in one amazing performance after the next. Her range and ability to take a character to the next level would have paired nicely with an emotional character like Scarlet Witch.

Scott Lang is meant to be a lovable character that was never really meant to be a superhero. The actor for this role needs to be someone that feels relatable and endearing, which basically describes Joseph Gordon-Levitt perfectly. He would have been a tremendous addition to the MCU that people would have loved.

Rose Leslie really burst onto the scene when she was cast on the series Game of Thrones. She has shown the ability to take on a character that requires toughness, which would make her a perfect fit for Nebula. Just imagine Rose Leslie in full makeup going toe-to-toe with Thanos.

Yes, we did get Donald Glover in the MCU in the film Spider-Man: Homecoming, but we wish that he had had more to do in the movie. Casting him as Falcon would have been tremendous for the MCU. Glover can play serious roles and comedic roles, which would have balanced out Falcon.

Kate Beckinsale already showed that she could anchor a franchise when she was cast as the lead in the Underworld films, and she would have fit in nicely in the MCU. Beckinsale is a gorgeous performer, like Evangeline Lilly, and her past action film experience would have paid dividends here.

Being able to portray a villainous character is truly an art form, and it just so happens that Christoph Waltz can do this better than just about any person on the planet not named Cate Blanchett. Waltz would have been an incredible Red Skull, bringing a sinister take to the character.

Bryce Dallas Howard is a fine actress, and seeing her as Pepper Potts in the MCU would have been great. She has really blossomed in the Jurassic World franchise, and she would have been able to put a spin on Pepper Potts that fans would have loved. Her abilities behind the camera would have also been handy.

Over the years, Colin Farrell has shown that he can handle any role and shine in any project. Iron Man 3 utilized the character Aldrich Killian, and Farrell would have been perfect. He could have gotten his Marvel redemption while giving Killian additional smoothness and some depth in the film.

At some point, Emily Blunt is going to bring her incredible talent to the MCU, and fans cannot wait to see it happen. She would have been perfect as Peggy Carter. Blunt has shown that she can play an elegant and driven character, with both of these qualities being perfect for Peggy Carter.

Yes, we know that J.K. Simmons has returned as his iconic J. Jonah Jameson, but hear us out. Thunderbolt Ross appeared long before Jameson, and Simmons would have been tremendous in the role. Go watch Burn After Reading and tell us that he couldnt have taken this character to another level.

Olivia Wilde is a solid performer that has seen and done a little bit of everything in the business. Wilde would have been a nice fit as Jane Foster. Her history with playing intelligent characters would certainly come in handy, and she would have had great chemistry with Chris Hemsworth.

Related:15 Actors Who Turned Down MCU Roles

Dwayne Johnson is a hulking man that has more muscles than most of the other guys in the MCU combined. Naturally, this would have made him a perfect fit for Drax. Not only that, but his comedic timing would have suited this character well while mingling with the other Guardians.

Considering that Maria Hill is a character that can crank up the action and bring some levity to situations, Rose Byrne would have been great here. She has thrived on the big screen for years, and seeing her with Samuel L. Jackson in the MCU would have been great for fans.

Related:10 MCU Characters We Respect (And 10 We Never Will)

Much has been made about staying true to comics, which is why casting Ken Watanabe would have been a better decision for the Ancient One. Watanabe has a wealth of experience on the big screen and has great range as a performer. He would have been stellar in this role.

Zoe Kravitz has been on the top of her game in recent years, and she is quickly becoming a force in the business. She was recently cast as Catwoman in The Batman, but we cant help but wonder how she would have been as Gamora. She would have brought a smoothness to the character.

Paris Hilton looking for a way she can live forever

As the fear of coronavirus grips the world, the thought of the end is undoubtedly hovering over many heads.

In the midst of that, American media personality Paris Hilton is looking for a way to evade wait for it death.

Speaking to Britains Cosmopolitan magazine, the 39-year-old socialite revealed: Death scares me because I don't know what happens. I just don't want it to be nothing because that would be so boring.

She went on to further say that she is trying to find a way that would let people escape death and reach immortality.

I'm trying to figure out a way - freezing myself or inventing the fountain of youth pill so people could live forever, like that movie 'Death Becomes Her'.

"I feel 21 forever. And I'm all natural. I feel so lucky that my mum always told me to stay out of the sun. I feel lucky I haven't had to resort to what most people do in this town," she said.

Apart from that, she also spoke about stepping down from her role in the show The Simple Life and how the producers had put forth a question in front of her on who would be a fit for the show.

"My schedule is just so insane. I can't imagine leaving my life and going to the middle of nowhere and doing that again. Plus the show is so timeless and iconic, you can't remake that. They asked me who I would recommend if I didn't want to do it myself. (Who did I say?) I can't tell. I've signed a confidentiality agreement, she said.

Greek laurel (the bay tree) is undeniably one of the Greek plants with powerful symbolism and deep roots in mythology. It is the plant we use in the Christian ceremony for Palm Sunday (Kiriaki ton Vagion) before Easter, named for the plants common name vagia. It is also known as Daphne Apollonos. Its scientific Latin name, Laurus nobilis, with laurare meaning praise and nobilis meaning noble, indicates tht the Romans considered that this plant conveys the utmost sense of honor and they therefore used it to honor soldiers, athletes, and others. But the deep history of the plant begins with the name Daphne Apollonos, meaning Daphne of the Greek god Apollo, the god of light, arts, and oracles.

It all began, as usual in Greek mythology, with a love story. Daphne was a beautiful nymph of Pineios river. Her name is etymologically derived from the words Da (=earth) and phnis (=suddenly), meaning the one who was created from earth all of a sudden. Apollo was pursuing Daphne to marry her, but she did not want to be married, so Apollo transformed her into a tree to have her close to him. From then, the daphne plant symbolized success and this tradition started in ancient Greece. A crown of daphne was the prize of athletes, musicians, and solders after their victory or success.

This tradition was used also in Olympic games. Romans, great emulators of the Greeks, followed this example too. Its symbolism has expanded to include peace, immortality, victory, fame, power, and holiness. Byzantine emperors, generals and ecclesiastical hierarchs used it as a symbol of power and success. Apart from myths and stories, the true glory of this plant, however, stems from its medicinal powers.

This gave it a prominent position in ancient oracles and was used by the priests. Apollo, as the god of oracles, shared this plant with the priests. It is not random that Apollos famous Oracle of Delphi had a forest of daphne trees around it. Priests burn daphne leaves and other plants as part of the rituals involved in the interpretation Apollos prophecies. It is said that Pythia, the oracles highest priestess, was placed into a trance and a hallucinatory state of mind by using this and some other plants. Daphne is rich in a powerful essential oil, hence its great therapeutic power (or toxicity if you use too much). In food we use it as a, herb, mainly in with lentil soup and other legumes to help the digestion of their fiber.

* The above is not medical advice but mere suggestions for improving your diet. Before reach herbal use you should consult your doctor, especially those who have health issues, are pregnant or are under the age of 6.

Bob’s Burgers plays the hits with a song contest gone awry – The A.V. Club

TV ReviewsAll of our TV reviews in one convenient place.

Wag The Song gives us a classic Bobs Burgers setup, as the Belchers find themselves dealing with two of the shows longest-tenured antagonists, Jimmy Pesto and Mr. Frond. Each of their stories are quintessentially them. Jimmy is so desperate for some more ill-conceived flash that he has installed an awning made of old Ferrari parts, while Mr. Frond is making another failed attempt to prove his guidance counselor bona fides by making a contest for students to write and select the new school song. The latter story at the school gets more attention in this episode, as is generally customary for whenever the adults and kids are put in separate stories, and we actually get a better sense than usual of just what Mr. Frond is trying to accomplish and how conflicted he is about the mess hes made through his string of foolish oversights and unforced errors. Hes the perfect co-conspirator for Tina here, who isnt quite as obsessive in this story as she was, say, A Fish Called Tina, but still proves plenty willing to break the rules in a mildly well-intentioned bid for Wagstaff immortality.

This is an episode that benefits from just how simple and clear everyones motivations are. Tinas inability to take a school photo because of her awful luck with the flu fits so seamlessly into her character that Im only almost sure this wasnt established seven or eight seasons ago. Thats a funny, nicely observed inciting reason for Tina to feel concerned shes passing through her school years without leaving a mark. Bobs Burgers has a reliably good read on its characters and their desires, and the show recognizes this matters to Tina without being the existential calamity that, again, her time as a failing big fish was. That more low-key approach makes it a lot easier for Tina to share the spotlight with her siblings and the other kids. Since Tina isnt having a full-on meltdownjust, you know, a little sly compromising of her core principlesLouise and Gene can focus on their magnum opus, The Pee-Pee And The Poo-Poo. Plus theres more time to devote to the other kids songs, which are all different breeds of hilariously awful.

Poor Mr. Frond. Nobody sort of means well quite like he does. Louise recognizes the first of two obvious flaws with his student song contest straight away, namely that students will pick the winner through volume of their applause, so the winner figures to be the dumbest, silliest choice. But really its on him for missing the other big issue, that children typically arent good songwriters. Before getting into Mr. Fronds scheme to fix this disaster, we get to hear the songs themselves, which prove perfect encapsulations of the various kids behind them. None of these are bad just for bads sake, as all track with the specific characters. Courtney Wheeler has some talent but overextends herself even as she should have known betterthe most common reason for messing up in this shows universe, Id say. Jocelyn is pure vapidity, wanting just to say Whoa for the entire song because shes heard that elsewhere and likes it. Tammy wants to game the system to wingiving her a broad similarity to Louise, not for the first timebut can only do so in the most direct and ridiculous way possible, by singing the name of every kid at the school. Regular-Sized Rudy is trying his best despite his physical limitations and his dads extremely Kirk Van Houten home like, which merge with him talk-singing about the school a la Love Shack. And then there are eventual winners Zeke and Jimmy Jr., who are just pure rambunctious chaos energy.

One of the unexpected wrinkles of this story is how sympathetic Mr. Frond turns out to be. Unlike, say, his attempts to cover up his bad planning in Synchronized Swimming, he appears to genuinely care about the kids here, in as weird and limited a way as that ends up being. Mostly, it comes down to what he says to Tina when she asks if theyre bad: Theyre definitely not great, but at least they feel bad about it. In the past, Mr. Fronds concerns have often appeared to begin and end with his own career aspirations, but here he is trying to clean up his own mess and spare the kids feelings as much as he can. To his credit, when Tina does the right thing and sings her actual, barely begun song, Mr. Frond accepts his defeat and declares Zeke and Jimmy Jr.s song about wanting to be inside Wagstaff the winneralbeit with a desperate plea no one tell their parents. None of this is so far from the Mr. Frond we know, but these little variations help keep the storytelling fresh.

Theres less of that with Jimmy Pesto, give or take his admission that he kept the awning mostly because he needs the simple joy of annoying Bob. But then, his whole point is to be the same irrational thorn in Bob under any circumstances. While that can be a bit much when its the main thrust of an episodeone of the shows wiser course corrections was largely not doing those beyond the first few seasonsit works beautifully when its contained as the restaurant subplot. The awning is the perfect vehicle for this because its very plausibly the kind of faux status symbol he would think looks goodor, more accurately, makes him look goodand the problem it presents for Bob and Linda is simple yet intractable. The various attempts to solve it let the Belchers and Teddy do what they do best, which is lose it at varying speed. For Teddy, it comes as soon as he obligingly refuses to put down the cardboard, even as it burns his hand. Bob gets there next, as the attempt to shade the restaurant with newspaper instantly brings in a sympathetic passerby and a realtor eager to sell this clearly abandoned property. Linda is too distracted to ever get quite as worked up as her husband, but she does get into a whole debate with him about how best to throw bread at birds, so Id say that counts.

Wag The Song is an ideal distillation of what makes Bobs Burgers so reliably great. It knows all its characters, both the Belchers and the wider ensemble, so well that it needs only simple setups like the song contest or the awning to set them off. That could then feel repetitive, but the show avoids that trap by finding little wrinkles in its charactershere with Mr. Frond, and a little bit with Tinato keep things fresh, and to rely on just how massive the shows bench is to keep mixing and matching which students get involved in a given story. And it knows when to put more time into a story and when to keep it short and simple, as we see with the kids and adults plots respectively. Thats the core Bobs Burgers formula, more or less, and while that cant explain what makes the show special when it pushes itself and tries something wilder or more innovative, it does speak to just how this show has been so consistently good for a decadeand why the show could keep this going for years to come.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool close to immortality – but their lasting legacy is already painted across Merseyside – Liverpool Echo

This is a Liverpool squad that has become immortalised in its own time. A town that has been painted red.

The current champions of Europe remain firmly on course to end a three-decade wait for an English league title, with a 22-point advantage at the summit leaving them just a half-dozen victories away from a sizeable slice of modern history.

Jurgen Klopp and his teak-tough band of brothers are the talk of the town, with the eternal chatter from the Red half of the city largely surrounding this current crop's place in the pantheon of all-time Liverpool greats.

Where they sit among the sides sculptured and shaped by Bob Paisley, Bill Shankly et al, will one day make for one of the healthiest of Merseyside football debates.

In the here and now, though, there are medals to be won and trophies to be lifted.

Liverpool have veered only slightly so far throughout what has been remarkable campaign; just two Premier League points dropped with the Reds still in the hunt for both the Champions League and the FA Cup.

Their impact and influence, however, stretches beyond the regular confines of football fandom. To many, Klopp and the players at his disposal have already become icons, whatever happens between now, May - and the rest of the decade.

As world and European champions, this current squad have sent the levels of pride among the fanbase soaring to levels rarely seen across the club's 128-year history.

As such, Liverpool's players and their charismatic coach remain omnipresent throughout a city that boasts just as much civic pride as it does in its sporting accomplishments.

Take a stroll through the burgeoning Baltic Triangle area of the city centre and you will be confronted by a giant mural in homage to Klopp. It has become the coolest tourist attraction around - even for locals - since its inception in December 2018.

The likability factor of the affable Klopp, coupled with his sometimes underrated acumen as one of the sharpest tactical minds in football, has helped Liverpool to the brink of domestic glory once more.

No other manager has come as close as Klopp as to ending a wait for league title No.19 and after guiding the club to a sixth European Cup last year, his place as an Anfield great is already safe and secure. The German even has a sports bar named in his honour in the city centre.

French graffiti artist Akse has painted some of the most recognisable faces on the planet onto various walls across the world. From Bob Marley and David Bowie through to Martin Luther King and Muhammad Ali, the breathtaking artist's work always catches the eye.

The same applies to the likeness of Liverpool's manager, which can be found on Jamaica Street.

Commissioned by the club itself, Klopp's image was the first time Akse had painted a manager of the game, despite his ample experience of football-themed street art that include Wayne Rooney, Harry Maguire and Juan Mata.

"You really can feel the love from the fans [for Klopp]," he tells the ECHO. "Each time I go back to the wall, there are always fans from all around the world taking pictures with the mural.

"As an artist you get very attached to the pieces you paint on a personal level. Each piece has its own story: from the choice of the subject, the selection of the reference image, the preparation of the mural and the painting process."

The Klopp piece took two days to complete and was not without its weather-related technical issues, but for Akse - the artist who also produced the Trent Alexander-Arnold piece last year - his hard labour merely shines further light on the positive role models who are his subject matter.

He adds: "These murals pay tribute to the outstanding achievements of the subjects and the fans recognise that. After painting the Jurgen Klopp and Trent murals, I received a lot of requests from LFC fans to paint other players so its really a testament to how much they mean to them.

"[The Alexander-Arnold] mural is also dedicated to Fans Supporting Foodbanks so it brings fans together to fight food poverty in Liverpool. This is why I love doing street art, it can have such a positive impact in the community on so many levels."

Discreetly tucked away down a city-centre backstreet is an 'Ode to Mo' - a celebration of Liverpool's Egyptian King himself, Mohamed Salah.

As the poster-boy for football in his homeland, Salah carries the weight of expectation of his 90million compatriots and his rise at Anfield has catapulted him into the realms of global superstardom.

Magazine covers and lucrative endorsements have followed for a player who has become something of a pop culture phenomenon during his two-and-a-half years as a Liverpool employee.

Guy McKinley was the artist who sketched Salah's face on a wall midway down Basnett Street, creating a six-metre-by-three painting paying tribute to the Liverpool hero, bringing an otherwise nondescript collection of brickwork to life in the process.

Created just before the 2018 Champions League final, thanks to the work from local company RRUNews, Guy's art was accompanied by the words of poet Musa Okwonga, hailing the "golden smile of the nile."

"Mo is more than just a good footballer, he is a role model to lots of people from varying backgrounds," Guy told the ECHO. "He brings divergent people together which is always good.

"This was important to the piece as a whole, putting the image alongside Musas words and then interacting with the locals for the accompanying film, all helped highlight how well he is received by the local community too.

"That was the concept rather than just a mural of Mo Salah, it was a chance to open debate too. I dont think he is just a hero in Egypt now, he seems huge everywhere by what I have seen.

"From the outside looking at him, he seems to be a very positive person and is such a benefit to the team and city.

"I had kids come over to me while I was painted telling me how important it was that he is seen as this positive influence and thanking me for painting it, which was very touching.

"Appealing to people in a number of ways certainly helps cement his status among the whole family of Liverpool FC fans from all over the world."

This is about more than just a good football team; the current Liverpool squad have allowed even the most gnarled supporter a chance to remind themselves why they fell in love with the sport.

Beyond their accomplishments on the pitch, their willingness to embrace the supporters who lionise them is a constant theme throughout the squad.

Perhaps few embody that more than Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose rise from Academy hopeful to Ballon d'Or nominee has been sharp. In under four years, the West Derby-born, lifelong Liverpool supporter has become one of the world's most valuable defenders.

Cherished by locals, the 21-year-old's appearance was painted, three-storeys high, on to a home at the corner of Sybil Street and Anfield Road - just an Alexander-Arnold cross from where the Reds star has stamped his mark on the game he loves since his debut in October 2016.

The mural was arranged by the Anfield Wrap, a popular fan podcast with subscribers in over 80 countries, as a way to commemorate an incredible season that ended with Alexander-Arnold lifting the Champions League trophy.

Alexander-Arnold, though, represents more than just a great player being adored by a club's fans. He is a Steven Gerrard for the Millennium, a homegrown hero living the idyllic dream of thousands of other Liverpool-born football followers.

"I was trying to think of something we could do to celebrate the players' achievements," says Craig Hannan of the Anfield Wrap. "And it was the BT Sport clip after the game of Alexander-Arnold saying: 'I'm just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dreams have just come true'.

"He is a footballer who has lived all our dreams, coming through the youth system, lifting the European Cup - everything made sense for him. That is where the idea came about. He is not just his achievements on the pitch, it is what he has done off it too.

"He is a local lad and done loads of work for foodbanks and An Hour For Others, so it all just made sense. This is a local lad who has won the Champions League but also a grounded 21-year-old who gives back and hasn't forgotten where he has come from.

Paul Gorst is the ECHO's new full-time LFC correspondent covering the Reds both home and away.

He'll be across all the biggest stories both on and off the pitch and is a must follow for fans worldwide.

Paul can be found on Twitter @ptgorst, Facebook @ptgorst and Instagram @PaulGorst.

You can email Paul at paul.gorst@reachplc.com.

"We chose him for the wall, but in actual fact, when you look through the whole team, we wanted to celebrate the fact that these are footballers that stand for a lot and believe in a lot. You can see the continuous work they do in the city for charity. For Trent, we all see a bit ourselves in him.

"In a city like Liverpool, it is great that we can feel that connection with the players. There hasn't always been an obvious relationship with the players and the fans over the years, but with the likes of Andy Robertson and Trent and the rest, their values seem to be in line with us as fans.

"It is not just about them playing 90 minutes and then we don't see them, it is about them helping out in the local community. Even the kind of content the club put out, we get a great understanding of what they are like as people."

The Alexander-Arnold mural was unveiled days before the current Premier League season kicked off in August to help raise awareness for Fans Supporting Foodbanks - a cause the Anfield Wrap have championed for some time.

Craig adds: "They are giving us the best experiences of our lives right now and are also doing their bit off the pitch too.

"We are really proud of what we have been able to do [with the mural]. It was great that Trent came down to see it but the biggest thing is it is helping a cause we want to give as much coverage as possible to. But to see him on the wall and people flocking to see it is the biggest thing for us.

"For example, if one person a game sees it and looks into Fans Supporting Foodbanks more to donate then it has done its job. Also, we can celebrate a young lad like Trent who is someone who is inspiring kids every day.

"We're really proud of it and we love that Trent loves it and it has become a landmark to inspire kids in the area to show them what can be achieved. That is a brilliant thing."

New World Developer Diary Shows New Lore and Factions – SegmentNext

Amazon Game Studios recently released a New World developer diary. The diary reveals story elements and different groups that reside in the massively multiplayer RPG.

The 3-minute video called Fight the World shows the developers talking about New Worlds huge map called Aeternum. They wanted to create a map that provided players the possibility to explore and create their own narrative. Players will find themselves washed up on shore with nothing to their name. Then the exploration will begin and you will find other players roaming around the map.

No one can really die in the game as no soul can leave the body according to the devs. This immortality is granted via a magical source on the island called Azoth. The developers then introduce three main factions present in the game. The first faction is the Lost. They are the undead ghouls of the island that are half-dead and half-alive. The Lost consists of dead sailors and pirates that died a gruesome death and wander the island as straggling creatures.

The next faction is called the Angry Earth. These are beings of pure nature taking the form of humans and animals. They personify nature and have risen up to battle the forces that are trying to corrupt the island. The final faction is that of the Ancients. The Ancients had taken hold of the power of Azoth and used it to further their technological advancements. They are a hidden civilization that met their downfall due to mysterious reasons.

The New World developer diary also has mentions of the Corrupted. These entities will be the players main adversaries. They can block roads or summon a portal to teleport enemies to your location.

Players will be able to take over territories on Aeternum and build them up to their liking. Bear in mind that the more established your territory gets, the more it is likely to come under siege by other players and enemies.

Amazon Game Studios New World is shaping up to be quite an immersive sandbox MMO experience. New World is set to release in May 2020 for Microsoft Windows. There is no news on console release for the time being.

Kobe Bryant: Reflections on Fatherhood, Passion, and Immortality | The Exchange | A Blog by Ed Stetzer – ChristianityToday.com

Some moments embed themselves in your memory. Most people can remember where they were during 9/11the dreadful day thousands of American lives were lost in several terrorist attacks.

Yesterday was one of those moments for me.

Besides my family, my life tends to orbit around three Bs: the Bible, books, and basketball. I love NBA basketballat times, much to my wifes chagrin. As our ministry team closed our worship services yesterday, one of our members delivered me the news: Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter accident.

My stomach dropped. I had more questions than answers.

As the tragic story unfolded, I learned that Bryants 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven other people also lost their lives in the accident. I felt numb all day. I didnt know what to feel.

When the numbness subsided, one thought plagued my mind. What is it about the tragic, untimely death of iconic men and women that causes a collective lament from people from various religious, ethnic, and social backgrounds?

Three things about Kobes life and legacy ring true. And I think they are informativeespecially for believers.

The Changing Narrative on Black Fatherhood

As a father, my heart hurt that Bryant could no longer continue to nourish and develop his growing relationship with his daughter.

While I did not care for Kobe Bryant as a player, I admired him in his retirement as a father. His active involvement in his daughters lives and his presence after missing special moments because of a rigorous NBA schedule was refreshing.

Our country is rife with mischaracterizations about black fatherhood. Kobe had joined the litany of NBA Black father ambassadors to help shape and change the false narrative of fatherlessness in Black and Brown communities.

We lost the opportunity for Bryants story as a father to play out. But we are also reminded of ordinary, everyday, working Black fathers who put the same effort and love into their childrens lives.

It is no secret that we live in racialized times. Dont get trapped in talking point tales that undermine image-bearing men and women. As believers, let us make sure we continue to believe the best about others and not perpetuate stereotypical views that alienate brothers and sisters in the faith.

The Importance of Passion and Drive

As a Christian, I prayed earnestly that those involved had heard and believed the gospel and that my passion for gospel proclamation would never wane.

Bryant was one of the hardest working players in his sport. And it paid off for him. His passion for the game of basketball led him to study it more than any other player in modern history. He didnt want others to remember him as a disinterested member of the NBA, but as an ambassador.

He also served as an ambassador for the womens gamehelping the basketball community acknowledge and honor the work women put in on and off the court. Down to his last game, that passion never wanedhe scored 60 points in his final game.

What about our gospel passion and drive? Temporal trophies and legacy drove Bryants passion. Gospel work tells another story. Gospel work impacts eternal destinies.

Even for veteran Christians, its easy for the passion and drive to subside. It is easy to plod along in life without having shared our message of hope with those around us. My prayer is that Bryants misguided passion for NBA crowns leads us all to a renewed passion for our eternal crown (1 Cor. 9:25).

The Myth of Immortality

As a 41-year-oldthe same age as BryantI was reminded of the words of the writer of the Psalmist: Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Ps. 90:12).

In many ways, Bryant appeared immortal. He won five NBA championships and multiple NBA MVP awards. Bryant is going to be an inductee in the basketball Hall of Fame this fall. A mere two years into a new entertainment venture, he won an Oscar Award.

The news of his death shocked the conscience because he oozed invincibility. Many of us scrolled and refreshed our social media timelines yesterday because we found it hard to believe the news. But we may have missed an important moment.

As we peered through the windows of social media, many of us neglected to turn our gaze to the mirror of introspection.

We believe in our immortality, too. Or at least we live that way. We dont maximize the moments with our children the way we should. We procrastinate and put things off because theres always tomorrow.

Why? Because thinking of our mortality makes us reshape our priorities. And reshaping our priorities brings us face-to-face with the reality that we are more selfish than wed like to admit.

National tragedies lead to national conversations. But the most important conversation we all need to have in light of yesterdays news is an internal one.

Have you looked in the mirror of your soul lately? If not, step away from the window for a moment, let the truth of your mortality wash over you, and allow Gods grace to numberand shapethe rest of your days.

Steve Aoki to Perform at the Agora in March – Cleveland Scene

One of the most popular DJs in the world, Steve Aoki has just announced the dates of a winter tour that includes a March 11 stop at the Agora. Aoki founded Dim Mak Records, a record label and events/lifestyle company, back in 1996. The label has served as the launching pad for acts such as the Chainsmokers, Bloc Party, the Bloody Beetroots, the Gossip and the Kills.

As it approaches its 25th anniversary, the label has issued more than 1,000 official releases. Aokis tour supports hisNeon Future series (released via Ultra Music/Dim Mak), albums that delve into Aokis deep interest in futurism through technology and explore timely themes of singularity, biotechnology, electronic immortality and the symbiotic relationship between man and machine.

Neon Future is about a global community. Across the board, the artists on this album represent different cultures, languages, and walks of life coming together around this album concept, says Aoki in a press release. Ive always intended for the Neon Future concept to extend beyond just the music. I really do like to spread my wings far and wide and I love being able to cross into different cultures, genres, and worlds.

Tickets to the show go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Robert Horry thinks its idiotic to measure greatness with NBA championships – ClutchPoints

The evaluation of players due to the number of rings on their fingers has a been long-used method to measure a stars greatness. Robert Horry, who has won seven titles during his 16 seasons in the league, is here to say those chips dont mean literal greatness.

The always-blunt Horry said as much during the California Strong charity softball game on Sunday:

All these other idiots who dont play basketball and never played basketball, when they say you wanna judge a guys greatness by number of championships theyre idiots, Horry told TMZ Sports.

Heres the thing that people are so stupid about. They measure great players by how many championships they win. Its the stupidest thing, he said.

There is a myriad of factors that revolve around the chance to win an NBA title: roster construction, coaching, chemistry, path to the playoffs, etc. Horry, whos won titles with the Houston Rockets (1994, 1995), Los Angeles Lakers (2000-02), and the San Antonio Spurs (2005, 2007), ensured to drop some names to make his case.

Thats like saying Karl Malone, Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing are not great players.

Horry was fortunate to join teams that had a path to a championship and a roster built to contend for one. Saying his seven rings make him a better player than Michael Jordan (six), who catapulted the Chicago Bulls to basketball immortality, is just sheer dumb logic.

Some years ago (it might be as many as fifty) I read anarticle in a scientific journal (it might have been Science, The AmericanScientist, or Scientific American), which I believe was written by a Nobellaureate in physics from Asia (perhaps India) as you can see, at my agedetails get obscured. It was the scientists acceptance speech.

The author wrote of a conversation between two dragonflyeggs, attached to a reed below the surface of a lake. They noticed that eggs onother reeds floated to the surface and then disappeared, and they told eachother that, when they rise to the surface they would get back to the other andtell it what lies above them.

And then, of course, one of them floats to the surface, shedding its egg sac, its wings unfurl, and it flies off, never to return tomake good on its promise. That is, it is basically a parable about ones mortalityand hope for immortality.

Is there anyone who has heard of this, or how I might goabout finding it? Google failed me in this search.

Lions have what it takes to claim immortality against All Blacks – Irish Times

How to quantify this one? Rugbys greatest series, to quote Sky Sport NZs advertising campaign and that hyperbole doesnt seem excessive has reached its first series-deciding showdown since 1993. Viewed in that light, its possibly the biggest game of the professional era outside of World Cups.

For the back-to-back world champions, its an opportunity for a somewhat remodelled, younger team, captained by Kieran Read in his 100th test, and marshalled by the world player of the year, Beauden Barrett, and his brothers, to emulate illustrious names of the All Blacks past in the post-Richie McCaw and Dan Carter era and cement their own status.

For the Lions its an even rarer chance to grasp a slice of rugby-playing immortality, and emulate something only one Lions squad has ever achieved before. Then it was the sepia-tinged class of Willie John, Gibson, an array of Welsh legends and others, back in 1971.

Thats all then. Truly, its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, never to be experienced again.

The very nature of the tour and the series so far has set up the climax perfectly. The Lions were largely written off before this suicidal tour and from the outset. Gradually the quality of their players was honed into two strong teams, albeit one stronger than the other.

Even then, in the first test, they left opportunities behind, whereas the All Blacks clinically took theirs, whereupon the Lions defied expectations as 5/1 outsiders a week ago with a drama-filled comeback, admittedly against 14 men for 45 of the last 55 minutes on a raucous night in a rain-sodden Westpac Stadium. They were the clinical ones, with two nicely created and strongly finished tries. The Red Army were in raptures and are liable to be buttressed by further re-enforcements here. The All Blacks fans have been provoked into finding their voice. Another filthy forecast will only add to the drama.

Whod have thought, at the outset, that coming into this climactic third test, the Lions would not only have the momentum, but would have an unchanged side in a test for the first time since 1993? And meanwhile, that the All Blacks would be making three changes in personnel, including a 20-year-old (Jordan Barrett) and 24-year-old (Ngani Laumpape) making their first test starts in an untried back three and new midfield?

Revenge is a powerful spur in rugby, not least when the matches come close together. Wounded pride, and a whiff of cordite and all that, and therell plenty in the Auckland air. The Lions had it last week, the All Blacks this, and Ireland felt the full, brutal force of this blacklash in November.

Yet Warren Gatland is adamant, as is Johnny Sexton, that this Lions team can be even better again.

We also still dont think were at our best, we still think we can improve. Obviously theres going to be an improvement in the All Blacks but its something we dont think is going to be a shock to us. Rory Best spoke earlier in the week about how the Irish felt they didnt handle the physicality that the All Blacks brought in the game two weeks after the Chicago game, even though theyd spoken about it. Were ready for it.

I think theyre going to try to dominate us up front, particularly in the tight five, and try and give some of their inexperienced backs some go-forward. If they dont get that advantage up front and were aware of making sure we try and negate the threat of their tight five it should make the game interesting.

Despite their Queenstown time-out, and satisfaction from last week, theres no sense that the Lions players are content with their lot, according to Gatland.

I havent witnessed that. I hope I dont see it on Saturday night because that would be pretty disappointing. Theres a group of players there who are incredibly competitive and realise this is a massive opportunity to win a series in NZ. It doesnt come round very often. These Irish players who played in Chicago know what it was like two weeks later; theyve another chance to make sure they dont get caught with their pants down.

As in the previous two tests, the lines in the sand are liable to again be drawn close in along the gain line. The All Blacks won the collisions in round one, the Lions with some tampering in personnel in round two. The personnel now largely remains the same, with Laumape on from the start after being the All Blacks most potent runner, but also their weakest defender, a week ago.

Sean OBriens availability is a game changer, or at any rate his nonavailability would have been. If the Lions can reproduce the same strength and accuracy in the tackle close in, and if OBrien, Sam Warburton and co can slow down the All Blacks customary high-tempo game in other words, if they can stifle Beauden Barrett, they have every chance.

With yet more biblical rain forecast, the scrums could be a significant factor, as again will the referee, in this instance Romain Poite. He showed in the series decider four years ago that, as ever, he is both a strong, thick-skinned personality and favours the scrum going forward, whatever the means. The All Blacks will assuredly go after the Lions at scrum time.

The Lions have lost the penalty count by a combined 24-15 in the tests to date, and Gatland clearly feels the Lions havent been given a fair deal yet, and particularly in this series. He will meet with Poite, his assistants Jerome Garces and the hitherto unsatisfactory Jaco Peyper, a description that could also apply to the TMO George Ayoub.

All Gatland wants is that they have an open mind.

Thats the message I will hopefully give to the officials tomorrow night when I meet them. Weve got the confidence and self-belief to win this Saturday and win the series, so all we ask of them is to be open-minded, not to be surprised by us being in front and good enough to win. Thats an important message I am trying to deliver. I am not questioning their integrity or anything. Its just that sometimes its a mindset. The message is just, if there are some 50-50 calls, to be open-minded.

To support Gatlands theory that there is more in this team, the Sexton-Farrell combo was at the heartbeat of the two tries that turned the game on its head and has given the lie to Warrenball while giving them a cutting edge, which has been sharpened by a brand-new back three who have only played two games together. They also have a core of proven Lions. They wont be fazed.

The All Blacks havent lost at Eden Park since France won 23-20 in 1994, and have won 37 tests in a row there. They are hot favourites, and could win well, but if opportunity knocks, these Lions have tries in them.

After all the verbal sparring up until this point a week ago, both Gatland and Steve Hansen assumed a more restrained, balanced mindset, culminating in them both being quite philosophical on Thursday. Indeed, both had the exact same choice of wordswhen maintaining this game will not define these players.

Nor should it. They all have or will achieve plenty more.

Nevertheless, immortality beckons, and all that.
