‘Aging in Your 20s and 30s’ panel to be held Oct. 16 – College of Health and Human Sciences – Source

The Columbine Health Systems Center for Healthy Aging is hosting a virtual panel discussion at noon on Friday, Oct. 16, to answer community questions about how young people can live longer, healthier lives.

One of the Centers new initiatives is to encourage people in their 20s and 30s to think about what they can do now to support longevity and health across their lifespan and into advanced age, says Nicole Ehrhart, director of the Center and professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences. Research shows that people in their second and third decades rarely explore these topics.

As such, the premise of the panel is to cut through the noise and abundance of health and wellness tips to provide clear recommendations for healthy aging in young adults.

CSU faculty members from the College of Health and Human Sciences will serve as panelists for the discussion, including:

All questions surrounding diet, nutrition, fitness, mental health and general well-being are welcome. Questions can be submitted by emailing healthyaging@colostate.edu. Some to be answered by the panelists include:

Thus, while the panel is geared toward younger people, it will provide general health advice that people of all ages can benefit from.

Attendees may register in advance for the webinar at col.st/pAe2s

The webinar will be recorded for later viewing on the Center for Healthy Agings YouTube playlist.

A Vaccine That Protects Against COVID-19 May Be Right Under Our Noses : Shots – Health News – NPR

The nasal spray version of the flu vaccine contains live but weakened form of the virus. Researchers think there's a good chance this could help boost the body's immunity and improve its ability to fight off pathogens such as the coronavirus. Tim Sloan/AFP via Getty Images hide caption

The nasal spray version of the flu vaccine contains live but weakened form of the virus. Researchers think there's a good chance this could help boost the body's immunity and improve its ability to fight off pathogens such as the coronavirus.

In case you were still procrastinating getting a flu shot this year, here's another reason to make it a priority.

There's a chance the vaccine could offer some protection against COVID-19 itself, says virologist Robert Gallo, who directs the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is chairman of the Global Virus Network.

The key is getting the right flu vaccine, says Gallo, who was one of the main scientists credited with discovering HIV. "The vaccine has to have a live virus in it. The virus is attenuated so it doesn't cause disease, but otherwise the virus is alive."

A live virus may sound a bit terrifying, but it's a standard way to make safe and effective vaccines. In fact, you've probably already had a few "live, attenuated" vaccines in your lifetime, such as the measles vaccine or oral polio vaccine.

Now scientists are just beginning to learn that these vaccines may offer some unexpected advantages to the immune system.

When developing a vaccine, scientists have a few strategies to try. They can take a piece or component of the bacteria and use that to trigger an immune response in a person. They can kill the pathogen and use its corpse as the vaccine. Or they can take a live pathogen and weaken it in the lab.

The latter are called "live, attenuated vaccines," and over the past century, scientists have noticed something peculiar about these vaccines: They seem to offer some protection, not just from the targeted disease, but also against many different diseases, including respiratory infections.

"There's plenty of evidence for it," Gallo says. "The weakness is we don't really know the longevity [of the protection]. It will probably work only for months, but we can't say for sure."

Take for instance, the vaccine for tuberculosis. It's called bacille Calmette-Guerin, or BCG, and it contains a live, but weakened, strain of TB from cows.

When doctors in Sweden first started using BCG back in the 1920s, they noticed not only that the vaccine reduced a child's risk from dying of TB, but also that children who got it had a mortality rate from all causes that was almost three times lower than unvaccinated children. Since the 1970s, scientists in West Africa have documented a similar pattern with both the BCG vaccine and the live measles vaccine. In other words, the vaccines were doing something to boost the immune system's response to many kinds of pathogens.

Recently, doctors in the Netherlands directly tested the BCG vaccine against a placebo, to see if it could help volunteers fight off a weakened form of yellow fever. The conclusion? People who received the BCG vaccine mounted a stronger immune response against the virus and cleared out the virus more effectively than those who received the placebo, the study reported.

It's not just BCG that seems to have this effect. There's growing evidence that any live vaccines can offer some broad, nonspecific protection, including the oral polio vaccine, measles and the live flu vaccine.

Scientists have had a hard time believing the evidence because the idea goes against the way they thought vaccines work, says immunologist Zhou Xing at McMasters University in Ontario. "It's a new concept that has emerged in the field of immunology over the past five to 10 years or so."

In general, vaccines work by tricking the body to produce antibodies. These molecules are very specific. They typically target and neutralize only one type of infection.

Live vaccines also work through antibodies, but they likely do something else, as well. They supercharge our body's front-line defenders the cells that first recognize an invader and try to clear it out before the infection gets out of control, Zhou says. Specifically, scientists think live vaccines epigenetically reprogram immune cells in the bone marrow, called myeloid cells.

Unlike antibodies, myeloid cells are nonspecific they work on many types of invaders. And they work quickly when the virus first enters a person's body.

Now the big question is: Will live vaccines help a person clear out the coronavirus from their body before they get sick or before the infection becomes severe?

To figure that out, scientists around the world are currently running more than a dozen clinical trials with both BCG and the live polio vaccine to see whether they offer some protection against the virus that causes COVID-19.

No one believes the protection will be as strong or as long-lived as that provided by a specific COVID-19 vaccine, says Dr. Moshe Arditi, who leads one of the trials at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles.

But, he says, the BCG vaccine has several advantages to a specific vaccine. It's cheap. A dose only costs a few dollars. And we already know it's safe. "More than 130 million kids every year every year receive the BCG vaccine so the safety profile has been very strong," Arditi says.

So the BCG vaccine could be approved and available by early next year, he says. "It could be a bridge until we have a safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine."

In the meantime, virologist Robert Gallo says, why not go get the live flu vaccine, if you can?

This year, the flu vaccine comes in two major forms: a shot or a nasal spray. The shot, which is approved for all people above age 6 months who don't have contraindications, contains an inactivated virus or components of the virus. The nasal spray (FluMist), which is approved for people ages 2 to 49, contains live, attenuated flu viruses.

"You watch," Gallo says. "People who get the live flu vaccine will also be protected against the COVID-19. That's the hypothesis."

However, even if you get a vaccine, you should still exercise all the same cautious you would otherwise: Wear a mask, keep your distance, wash your hands and avoid large indoor gatherings.

3 Steps to Building the Workplace Culture You Want – The Advocate

3 Steps to Building the Workplace Culture You Want

Every business leader influences their employees, but that influence should proceed with intentionand a clear understanding of the desired end state of their workplaceculture and its relationship tocompany objectives. A leader moving without a clear, consistent focus can very quickly erode confidence and lead to toxic impacts that can be difficult to reverse and impact the companys financial bottom line. Leaders of small businesses, in particular, should realize the direct line betweenleader-employee functioning and company stability.

Becoming an effective influencer as a leader is not a simple task. If it was, there would be a smaller percentage of disgruntled ex-employees and broad-based reduction in workforce turnover. A commonly referenced fact in human resources is that a majority of employees leave their employers due to management and failures to lead. From personal experience, having supported many entrepreneurs of large and small organizations over the last 20 years, a sampling of common, consistent reasons for employees departing shared with me include:

Related:6 Entrepreneurs Share Secrets for Boosting Office Morale

Here are some approaches toward building a workplace devoid of these beliefs, with committed employees.

A common desire shared to me from business owners experiencing growth is that their next employee be a unicorn that elusive individual with the innate qualities that are hard to cultivate and can lead to evolution of the organization at large. My response when hearing this is, What plans do you have to develop your current workforce into that ideal? The answers are commonly inconclusive.

Most companies have not invested in training programs that provide effective means for evolvingtheir workforce towards its highest potential state. Such investments, when made effectively, have the benefit of not only improving workforce success in people individual roles, but lead to improved satisfaction, long-term workforce stabilityand improved confidence by leadership being in their corner.

A few critical, but often overlooked, training areas that I recommend companies incorporate include:

At some point, nearly every company will arrive at the decision to document its shared beliefs as value statements. When Iwork with a new organization to identityareas of improvement, senior leadership will inevitably share their corporate values as a precursor introduction to their culture and guiding principles. In a vast majority of cases, I receive feedback that indicates employees mostly experience those as somewhat akin to buzzwords affirmed infrequently (and generally for public benefit), and mostly absent from daily decisions.

This importance of a focus on daily application of values cannot be overstated. It is foundational to belief in leadership and shared sense of accountability to the organization. As an example, in my current team we have defined our values around the acronym HOOK:Humility, Over-delivering, Optimism and Kindness. We work to incorporate this into daily circumstances to ensure that application of the values to emerging scenarios does not follow a divergent path from what is intended. Driving long-term team alignment, most especially with new members, comes via documenting relevant scenarios for further shared awareness in discussion or training.

Without this contextual application, valuessometimes slip into obscurity or introduce conflict in their interpretation, which can relegate the acronym tooa mnemonic device reinforcing different outcomes and a source of frustration.

There are multiple personality-assessment types used for evaluation of prospective employees. Unfortunately, what is less understood and rarely applied is the ability for those assessments to be used in ongoing employee engagement and growth of interpersonal skills.

I have worked with many clients that have leveraged the DISC method of profiling to onboard employees, which isused at the onset of employment and rarely (if ever) referred to again. My strong recommendation to clients is that such profiles are made available to all team members as a basis for understanding optimal communication methods with the new member, and further using collective team profiles to bring improve collaboration.

As an example using the DISC model, if I was addressing teammate with high Dominance (the "D"in DISC) in a particular situation, I would modulate to being on a direct path towards resolution. If I was instead going to work with an individual with high Conscientiousness ("C") for with a similar scenario, I would instead be focusing on providing significant detail on the situation and path forward. For all distinct profile types, the key opportunity being that the assessment can guide subtle changes in interaction that allow leaders to reduce reluctance and drive clear improvements in communication and influence.

While there are multiple facets to the relationship of an employee to their company, leaders in the organization have a singular potential to shape the health and longevity of the relationship. Key to that is balancing what employees bring on their own against with howleaders can reinforce trustthrough systems the raise the likelihood of success for all.

Because women typically live longer than men and may have asmaller pension pot, they need to plan accordingly to make theirmoney last.

While longevity sounds like a blessing, we wouldn't want tobe unwell and struggling financially during our later-life years. But many women run the risk that this will be their future. Notbecause they've got the 'right genes' or live asuper-healthy lifestyle: it's simply because they were born awoman.

A 40-year-old woman has a one in four chance of living to age96, and a one in ten chance of living to 100.1 Betterhealthcare and positive lifestyle changes have helped to raise lifeexpectancies across the board, but women still are likely to livelonger than men. And with several studies finding that more menthan women have died from COVID-19, the life expectancy gap couldwiden further from here.

Women not only need their pensions to last longer, they alsogenerally have smaller pension pots to use during these extra yearsof life. We already know that women typically retire with one-fifthof the pension wealth of men.2 New analysis from theCentre for Economics and Business Research found that, when lifeexpectancy is taken into account, the gender pensions gap could beas much as 108,130 for single women, and 186,120 forwomen who are married or in a relationship.3

Because they tend to live longer, women are more likely to endup in single-person households later in life. This could addfurther to their financial pressures because it can be much moreexpensive to run a household of one, covering all bills alone.

Adding to this, the State Pension age is rising, which meansmany people who will rely on this government payment will have towork longer before they can claim it. Plus, there's noguarantee your health will support you working into your lateryears.

Top 5 Group Exercise Classes for Your Return to the Gym – Longevity LIVE

Its not hard to see why yoga has become so popular. In addition to helping with strength, balance, and body awareness, its meditative qualities can help center your life and reduce stress and anxiety. Taking a yoga class with a professional yoga instructor is an absolute must since some moves can be dangerous if not performed properly.

Taking yoga as a group class, additionally, will allow for the meditative qualities of yoga to be enhanced by group participation and will give you the motivation to participate more fully in the spiritual aspects of the practice. Being a group yoga classalso allows you to benefit from the shared, collective energy of the group, and youll be able to leverage that energy throughout your yogic flows. For those who struggle to stay consistent with their yoga effortsparticularly beginnersthese classes can be a great way to create accountability, learn from others, and make it more fun.

Taking a group dance class can be an incredibly fun social experience, especially if you go with your significant other. Dance has many of the same advantages of yoga, including strength, balance, and cardio training, but instead of meditation, it concentrates on interpersonal interaction.

The social aspects of group dance go back to ancient traditions. All over the world, dance would have incredible importance in the ritual life of the community. Many of these ancient rituals have been lost, but some of those social benefits can be tapped into. Be it through swing, salsa, and other group dance classes. In fact, the ability to build close connections with your fellow dancers is one of the biggest benefits.

Because dancing involves physical connection, it allows you to bridge the gap between human interaction and human touch. Group dance classes are also almost always more affordable than private lessons, and youll benefit from getting a firsthand look at how many different people have different styles and approacheseven for the same dance.

Ask Maine Audubon: Why do baby snapping turtles hatch in the fall? – pressherald.com

Why do snapping turtles often build their nests quite a long walk from the water, instead of right next to it? Also, why do the babies hatch now, instead of in spring like so many other baby animals?

Avi, 4, Portland

Great to hear from a young inquisitive naturalist! Snapping turtles are a great species to study throughout our warmer months because they are fairly common, and their slow movements and large size make them easy to find and observe over time. Ive been tracking one of the snapping turtles at Maine Audubons Gilsland Farm in Falmouth for years. It lays eggs every spring, which gives us a few exciting days every fall when the babies hatch.

We can almost set our clocks to when the female snapping turtle will wander up from the pond to find a spot to lay her eggs. Every year that weve found her, it has been during the first week of June. As Avi notes, she makes the 400- to 500-foot journey from the pond to find someplace that will be safe to lay the eggs. In most cases, I see turtles moving uphill to find dry sandy areas to dig a hole for their eggs. If they lay them too close to the pond or body of water that they live in, they may risk getting the eggs wet or too cold. Temperature is critical for development, and actually determines the sex of the hatchlings: warmer temperatures during embryo development will result in females, colder temperatures result in males.

Predation is also a big problem for snapping turtles, with studies showing that over 80 percent of nests are raided by predators. Many of the animals that would make a meal of a turtles eggs, including raccoons and mink, are likely to be found around the waters or riparian habitats that the turtle lives in. So perhaps moving away from the water could also help lower predation risks.

Just as we can predict the early June laying of eggs, we almost always see baby turtles hatching out during the second week of September. This has varied over the years, with Oct. 10 being our latest hatch date, despite the same June lay day. Unlike the other spring babies that we see with other animals, especially mammals, snapping turtles have a narrower window to reproduce. They can only start mating once theyve emerged from the mud in the spring (we often see turtles mating during our Spring Warbler Walks at Evergreen Cemetery in mid-May). So by the time females lay eggs, the eggs incubate, and then hatch, we find ourselves in September.

There are sometimes reports of eggs that have overwintered in northern regions, probably because they didnt have enough time to incubate, that then hatch out in the spring. Still others can hatch, overwinter underground, and emerge from their nests in spring. Good questions, Avi!

CAN SOLAR PANELS AND BIRDS COEXIST?

Since reading that Paris and Oxford have approved a 30 acre solar panel farm, I have been worrying. Is it true that birds flying over such projects can get fried?

Cynthia Burmeister, Paris, Maine

With climate change arguably the greatest threat to wildlife, human health, and even habitability on this planet, we need to transition to renewable energies as quickly as possible. Acting fast does not mean we should act improperly, and this is where we need to evaluate the different options for a sustainable future, as not all are equal.

The sun sends us energy in the form of solar radiation, and we have several technologies (and more coming) for harnessing this hopefully infinite source of energy. One of those is used in concentrated power facilities, and it has been known to be harmful to birds. These facilities essentially use mirrors to reflect light back to a single point, on a tower, and convert that heat into energy. These systems can heat water to produce steam, or even efficiently store heat in molten salts.

The problem with concentrated solar power facilities is that they use lots, often thousands, of specialized mirrors (heliostats) that essentially create a heat ray. This is practically the same technology that Archimedes used to burn attacking Roman ships during the Siege of Syracuse (213212 BC). Scale up that Greeks science project, and you can imagine how effective these modern facilities are. They can, unfortunately, fry birds that fly through the hot beams. However, to allay Cynthias concerns, concentrated solar power is not very common, and Maine is far from suitable for this technology.

The solar technology that we are seeing a big push for in Maine is generating electricity through photovoltaics. This is basically a plan to scale up the solar panels you see collecting sunlight directly on rooftops and ground-mounted platforms. Photovoltaics represent the cheapest solar electricity source, and Maine is a great place for them, especially for homeowners thanks to the restoration of net-metering by Gov. Janet Mills in 2019. From an environmental impact perspective, photovoltaics are great: they dont produce any pollution or green-house gases. Yes, manufacturing of anything will produce some waste and carbon emissions, but the longevity and efficiency of photovoltaic cells make them one of our best options. And from a birds perspective, there is virtually no harm from photovoltaics themselves.

There is potential for adverse impacts, however, as my colleague Eliza Donahue wrote about in August. Photovoltaic technology is great, and placing them on rooftops or brownfields are ideal, but we need to be cautious in large-scale adoption. Proposals for large solar farms on grasslands, woodlands, or other ecologically productive sites need to be thoughtfully sited and evaluated for long-term impacts to the species that rely on those areas including humans.

Sergio Ramos’ titles, longevity for Spain and Madrid are the stuff of legend — and he isn’t slowing down – ESPN

Sergio Ramos is a freak. It's impossible to deny that fact.

Now, Sergio, if you're reading this, I mean it in the most complimentary way. Not a hint of denigration or disrespect.

But facts are facts.

We live in an age when players are gasping for respite, a breather for their tired limbs to regenerate. Not only that but the merest pause from the endless, vicious cycle of: train, prepare mentally, play, recuperate, train, prepare mentally, play, etc. so that creative players can regain sharpness of instinct and even little flames of inspiration and daring. They all fear their sparks of genius vision and invention will be extinguished.

The evidence that we are squeezing more out of our elite footballers than they should be giving is not only staring us in the face, it's adopting an aggressive "Why don't you care?" expression. In recent days there were reminders -- futile, I'm sure.

- UEFA Nations League on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games and replays (U.S. only)- UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying on ESPN+: Stream LIVE games and replays (U.S. only)

Kevin De Bruyne, a mere stripling at 29 compared to gnarled veteran Ramos (34), warned: "I've played flat out for two years, but nobody listens to the players. It worries me sometimes. Your body is screaming out for a rest but nobody listens to the players."

Then, after Spain's flat and creativity-starved 1-0 win over Switzerland, 23-year-old Pau Torres admitted that the players have felt the strain of a three-game week for their clubs followed by a midweek friendly in Portugal and then this test against the disciplined, athletic, hard-pressing Swiss. Then there was the 7,600-kilometre round trip to Kiev, for a match against Ukraine, to be faced and suffered.

It really is nonstop for these guys.

Mental and physical tiredness against the Swiss cost La Roja those split seconds where an invented action, a brilliant piece of sharp passing or an individual skill properly separates truly top-class players from those who are truly giving their top effort. "But there can't be any such thing as tiredness when you're playing for your country," Torres said.

Then you have Arsene Wenger arguing, while promoting his imminent autobiography, that "the next game changer is neuroscience." Why does he put forward this idea? According to Wenger, "Because we are at the end of the improvement of physical speed."

2 Related

Rate him or not, one of the modern era's most successful and epoch-changing managers believes that, athletically, elite football is already operating at absolute maximum -- pedal to the floor. With the needle steadily edging into the red zone, if this were a car, you'd slow down and find your nearest mechanic.

But not Ramos.

His stated aim, despite his 35th birthday coming in March, is to lead Spain at the European Championship next summer, do the same at the postponed Tokyo Olympics in autumn 2021 and then captain La Roja to the Qatar World Cup in 2022. All the while, no doubt, inspiring Real Madrid to another La Liga title and winning back-to-back Champions Leagues.

These remarkable objectives from a remarkable man need putting in context.

First, Ramos's voracious hunger and stamina. From his debut match for Spain (at 18 he became the country's youngest debutant for 55 years), of all the 17 players used that day, only Joaquin is still a professional footballer. Ditto his debut in a World Cup: the 4-0 thrashing of Ukraine in Germany 2006. Of all starters and substitutes who played that afternoon, only Cesc Fabregas has lasted this long as an active pro. Even if you take the starting XI from the first international final he won, the 1-0 defeat of Germany at Euro 2008, only he, Fabregas, David Silva and Andres Iniesta are still in the game.

And the subject of this man's trophy lifts is important.

Ramos has won the World Cup and two European Championships for Spain, rewriting history, but that didn't sate him as it did others. While teammates, greats at that, silently slipped away -- Iniesta, Iker Casillas, David Villa, Jordi Alba, Pedro -- Ramos powers on.

For his club, the trophy list is gargantuan. Four Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles and a cupboard full of other medals that lesser men don't even get a sniff of.

He still isn't satisfied.

Return our focus to international football and the history he's made outwith lifting trophies begins to explain Ramos' perpetual voracity Regardless of these difficult, unpredictable times, should international football continue as intended, by Euro 2020 Ramos will overtake Egypt's Ahmed Hassan, who is at the top of the all-time appearance list with 184 caps. Of all the players in the top 10, only one (Mexico's Claudio Suarez) earned his caps in a shorter time than Madrid's captain.

Upcoming games live on ESPN+ (U.S. only):FRIDAY, OCT. 16 Tianjin Teda v Shenzhen (3.25 a.m. ET) Hebei CF v Guangzhou Ever. (7.25 a.m. ET) Derby County v Watford (2.40 p.m. ET)SATURDAY, OCT. 17 Shandong L. v Beijing Guoan (3.25 a.m. ET) Dalian Pro v Shijiazhuang Yong. (3.25 a.m. ET) Napoli v Atalanta (8.50 a.m. ET) Mainz v Leverkusen (9.20 a.m. ET) Hoffenheim v Dortmund (9.20 a.m. ET) Freiburg v Werder Bremen (9.20 a.m. ET) Hertha v Stuttgart (9.20 a.m. ET) Augsburg v RB Leipzig (9.20 a.m. ET) Bournemouth v QPR (9.55 a.m. ET) Inter Milan v AC Milan (11.50 a.m. ET) Sampdoria v Lazio (11.50 a.m. ET) Bielefeld v Bayern Munich (12.20 p.m. ET) Gladbach v Wolfsburg (2.25 p.m. ET) Crotone v Juventus (2.35 p.m. ET) Inter Miami v Montreal (7.00 p.m. ET)

Ramos, over his career, hasn't done injuries. That's not to say he's utterly immune -- just fantastically robust. Nor does Ramos pick and choose when he plays for his country. If Spain want him, he's there. Tired? Sore? Family commitments? Rather be fresh for his club? Can't be bothered with the trip to the Faroe Islands, Moscow or Minsk? Those ideas, according to Ramos, are for wimps.

He's the all-time winningest footballer in international history, having overtaken his friend and colleague Casillas, and he's the top-scoring defender in the vast history of football nations pitting themselves against one another.

And he isn't slowing down.

In the past two years, aged from 32 to 34, Ramos has played 108 matches for club and country. In that time, both Spain and Madrid have developed a distinct Ramos dependency. It's not that Real Madrid simply cannot win without him, it's that they lose an essential aggression, competitiveness and self-belief without their leader.

Look at the debacle against Manchester City in the away leg of last season's Champions League round of 16. Without Ramos by his side, Raphael Varane made horrible mistakes, and once they were 2-1 down Madrid utterly lacked the chutzpah, the "We're not beaten until the stadium floodlights are switched off" attitude with which Ramos bristles.

1:01

Sid Lowe marvels at Adama Traore's impact in his first international action with Spain.

Compare that to how he almost single-handedly bullied all domestic rivals out of the way until Real Madrid won the title after La Liga's restart. Ten matches, nine wins, one draw, during which their 34-year-old central defender scored six times -- including the only goal in consecutive victories over Getafe and Athletic Club.

Nor should anyone overlook his record of big goals in Champions League finals. When Madrid were about to lose to Atletico Madrid in the 2014 Lisbon showpiece, Ramos didn't just score the most dramatic of added-time equalisers. No. He told me that he was thinking of his recently deceased grandfather as the minutes ticked away. Thinking to himself, "I can't, I won't let this match finish this way." And he didn't.

From that day to this, Madrid haven't found someone to replicate the Ramos effect. Cristiano Ronaldo was cut from the same cloth but when, if, Ramos ever departs this team, it'll be hell on earth to find anyone with the same mix of extraordinary talent, athleticism, technique, character and sheer, naked will to win.

It's the same for Spain. In his past 17 internationals, and please remember we are talking about a defender, he's scored nine times. He's their most potent striker. And while Luis Enrique has some productive scorers scattered throughout his squad, if Ramos doesn't hit the net, La Roja often struggle and look dry in front of goal.

Throughout his career he's taken 31 penalties and missed just three. Most importantly, though, he's scored 22 consecutively for Madrid and Spain since he last failed. He is metronomic from the spot.

Dan Thomas is joined by Craig Burley, Shaka Hislop and others to bring you the latest highlights and debate the biggest storylines. Stream on ESPN+ (U.S. only).

The key thing to understand about Ramos is that he's a buccaneer, someone from times gone by. He's an adventurer, a rascal, someone who lives life to the absolute limit; someone who sees horizons where others see walls and boundaries; someone who, when young, truly wanted to be a bull fighter; a man who's always wanted not just to win but to tilt against the odds, the bigger the better; and he's someone who simply loves the training, playing and competing involved in football.

Recently, he told UEFA: "I'm full of motivation. You have to reset every year and start from scratch; to live each triumph, every trophy win, as if it were a completely new thing. I think it's very positive to continue enjoying football like this, without looking back, without stopping to think what you have done or achieved. This is how it feels like there is a whole life ahead of you when your body is trying to tell you that you can't do it any longer.

"In principle, just so long as I'm as full of inspiration, pride and hunger, then I'll treat the World Cup in Qatar as another challenge. I want to play in it and increase my number of caps. If I can make it to 200 appearances for Spain then all the better."

They were born just two months and 990 km apart in 1986, but when you see Rafa Nadal hurting, fighting, recovering lost causes, equalling title winners who, perhaps, were thought to be slightly more conventionally talented than him, try seeing Ramos instead. Two peas in a pod: Spanish, proud, aggressive, athletically brilliant, perpetually inspired, self-motivated, deaf to both critics and those who say, "Not this time, he won't be able to ..."

Two fabulous freaks: men who are easy to admire, impossible to ignore and who give meaning to the whole idea of sport as a means to test the boundaries of what human beings can reasonably achieve.

COVID-19 Cross-Sector Impact Thematic Research, Q3 2020 – ResearchAndMarkets.com – Business Wire

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The "COVID-19 Cross-Sector Impact - Thematic Research (July 2020)" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

This report analyzes the impact of COVID-19 across industry sectors. It provides side-by-side analysis of alternative datasets to present you with unique quantitative analysis of the effects of COVID-19 and how these differ across sectors. We also provide qualitative analysis of each sector and analyse COVID-19's impact on leading companies.

According to John Hopkins University data, by 28 July 2020, COVID-19 had infected more than 16.4 million people and claimed 650,000 lives. The pandemic forced governments to impose rigid lockdowns that essentially shut down the worldwide economy for many months. With the exception of India and China, all major economies are expected to shrink this year. Unemployment levels have increased at jaw-dropping rates.

The COVID-19 recession has not been caused by a demand shock, rather, it is a policy-driven supply shock designed to save people's lives. Consequently, the strategies-of governments and companies-that will be used in the economic recovery could be different from previous recessions.

Despite the substantial uncertainty regarding the economic downturn, this could well be the first recovery with a focus on sustainability. The human cost of COVID-19 extends beyond infection and into the broader economy. Companies that ignore social, environmental and governance issues could face significant customer backlash. Governments are already showing signs that sustainability-particularly green energy-will feature strongly in stimulus programs.

The way we live our lives has been changed permanently. However, the extent to which human life will change will be affected by two competing factors: the longevity of COVID-19's presence and the speed with which a vaccine is developed. Most enterprises successfully transitioned to work from home; few will revert back to pre-COVID-19 practices. Many staff will opt to work from home at least part of the week. There will be ramifications for the way we plan our future cities and future transportation networks, as well as for the commercial property sector.

The New Face of Integrated Planning and Design – D Magazine

It is estimated the world will invest 94 trillion U.S. dollars in infrastructure globally in the next 20 years. With that level of investment, we should ask some important questions. What is the best approach we should use today to deliver these projects? How can we incorporate climate change, social equity, and sustainability into our project planning? What is the future of our engineering practice?

One thing 2020 has taught uswe cant solve problems as we did before. Todays infrastructure investment must include new thinking. Through innovation, every project, regardless of sector, needs the longevity to last several decades and incorporate forward-thinking innovations to solve future challenges today. We must start to apply green box thinking.

Rami Issa, AECOM

Cities, developers, architects, and engineers are increasingly looking for ways to move away from the concrete jungle and incorporate elements of nature into our everyday lives. This focus on more sustainable development is the same approach we should take when evaluating infrastructure.

Many of us are familiar with gray infrastructurethe more traditional, concrete, human-engineered solutions however, green infrastructure is a solution worth exploring and implementing alongside gray infrastructure. It refers to natural elements of our ecosystem, such as forests, reefs, and wetlands, which can serve many of the same gray infrastructure functions.

When you blend both green and gray infrastructure together, the result is a cohesive solution that helps address community resiliency future challenges. In many instances, incorporating green infrastructure into future infrastructure investments may boost eco-tourism and generate new revenues for local communities.

Green infrastructure can take many forms, from protected natural areas to green roofs in cities. The goal is to employ nature to provide natural benefits such as clean air or reliable flows of clean water. By blending conservation and restoration techniques with innovative engineering, green-gray infrastructure provides solutions enabling communities to mitigate natural disasters and adapt to a changing climate. However, the challenge is strategically combining the two.

To further advance the science and practice of green-gray infrastructure, the Green-Gray Infrastructure Community of Practice (GGI COP) was established. It will blend conservation and restoration of nature with human-made engineering approaches to fortify communities against climate effects.

AECOM co-founded the initiative with Conservation International, a global leader in environmental conservation and sustainable development. Conservation International plans to release a practical guide for GGI implementation, which will be a tool for engagement with local governments, clients, universities, and field staff to support project implementation.

Flooding resiliency is one area where green-gray infrastructure can help provide a solid solution. GGI COP estimates the number of people impacted by floods will double worldwide by 2030. While conventional engineering approaches of upsizing stormwater conveyance and storage systems may have near-future benefits, they do not incorporate future challenges such as climate change and social and economic shifts. These projects can be very costly to construct, and stop-gap solutions only kick the can down the road.

Flooding continues to be a challenge in North Texas, and tackling it head-on requires a new way of thinking. Collaboration and partnerships among many stakeholders in our North Texas community must deliver integrated infrastructure solutions that incorporate green and gray infrastructure together. These solutions should incorporate regional transportation, stormwater management, and environmental planning into regional infrastructure projects.

Now, how do we blend green and gray infrastructure solutions? We do it by adding purpose, beauty, value, equity, and resiliency through each project by transforming the way we perform integrated planning and design.

Integrated planning and design have the power to transform a community into the next level and incorporate restorative environments within urban density. A shift from reactive planning into a proactive planning approach will solve todays challenges and account for future challenges. This is the future of practice, no doubt.

Rami Issa is the DFW Water Business Line Leader at AECOM.

Fountain of youth? The science behind living longer – KGUN

Lets face it: life expectancy in the U.S. is an issue. Ranked 39th in the world at 78.93 years, Americans life expectancy lingers behind dozens of comparable countries (take Japans 84.67 years). As if this trend werent hard enough to navigate on its own, the Coronavirus pandemic has taken over 200,000 American lives and age is among the top risk factors for severe illness.

Americans are feeling overwhelmed. The pandemic has thrown their lives off track physically, mentally, and emotionally. A recent survey shows 8 out of 10 Americans have changed their eating habits; theyre snacking more and moving less. 80% of mothers are dealing with mild to high levels of anxiety around COVID its keeping 23% of moms up all night.

With no end in sight to the pandemic, Americans are desperate for advice on how to adjust and find ways to live their best life. American longevity expert Dr. Brian Kennedy is famous for his research in the biology of aging. Hes a visionary, translating research discoveries into new ways of delaying, detecting, and preventing human aging and associated diseases. Dr. Kennedy is joining viewers virtually from Singapore to give them knowledge and tools as they seek to find harmony, balance, and longevity amid the chaos.

Dr. Brian Kennedy will share key insights with viewers, and discuss the three top factors to increasing longevity:

Sleep for success: Did you know that sleep and longevity are directly related and can affect memory and immunity? Deep, consistent sleep is tied to good health and too little of it may end up shortening your life. Researchers say that every 5% reduction in REM sleep increases mortality rates by 13% to 17% among middle-age and older adults.

Human Connection is Key: Social isolation and feelings of loneliness have become widespread issues in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. Studies show loneliness and weak social connections are associated with a reduction in lifespan, and are as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Recently, researchers found links between poor physical and mental health outcomes and major risk factors like social isolation, especially in older adult populations. In general, Dr. Kennedy will explain why social connection is so important to our emotional health and overall longevity and will share ways to stay connected despite distance.

Mindfulness over matter: One of the most essential aspects to preserving and enhancing your health is mindfulness the ability to be fully present in the moment. Studies have linked quieter brains with longer lifespans. Dr. Kennedy will explain that mindfulness isnt just about observing the thoughts in your brain it also includes practices like forgiveness and time in nature that benefit emotional and physical health, and can reduce symptoms of stress and anxiety. Dr. Kennedy will share his tips and favorite reads on the subject.

The Science of Eating and Moving: Americans say the pandemic has thrown their eating habits out of whack. A recent survey shows Americans are snacking more and thinking about food more than usual. Dr. Kennedy believes a combination of proper nutrition and exercise leads to increased energy, mental clarity, and longevity. He will share how overall wellness and longevity can be positively impacted by eating foods that give your body the nutrients it needs to function at its best. Additionally, Dr. Kennedy will explain how periods of fasting can allow the body to rest and reset, and benefit processes in the body including cell rejuvenation.

About Dr. Brian Kennedy:Dr. Brian Kennedy is internationally recognized for his research in the basic biology of aging and as a visionary committed to translating research discoveries into new ways of delaying, detecting, and preventing human aging and associated diseases. He is a Professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Physiology at National University Singapore and Director of the Centre for Healthy Longevity in the National University Health System. From 2010 to 2016 he was the President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. Currently he remains as a Professor at the Institute. Dr. Kennedy also has an adjunct appointment at the USC Davis School of Gerontology. He is also actively involved biotechnology companies, serving in consulting and board capacities, as well as Scientific Director of Affirmative Health. Dr. Kennedy is on the Board of Directors for L-Nutra, Inc. and serves as a Co-Editor-In-Chief at Aging Cell.

Larry Hunter, former Ann Arbor council member and Black Panther, dies at 69 – MLive.com

ANN ARBOR, MI Larry Hunter, a social activist who served 12 years on Ann Arbors City Council and advocated for human rights and affordable housing and fought racial discrimination and segregation, died Nov. 12.

He was 69.

Hunter was a Democratic 1st Ward representative from 1982 to 1994 and served as mayor pro tem under both Democratic and Republican mayors.

At last weeks council meeting, 1st Ward representative Jeff Hayner observed a moment of silence for the late city leader, calling him a king among men who will be missed.

Born in 1951, Hunter, one of 14 siblings, grew up in a public housing project and lived in both the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti areas.

He became politically active at an early age, organizing walkouts at Pioneer High School as a Black Student Union leader, and joined the Black Panther Party and participated in marches and demonstrations against injustice.

He made his first run for public office in 1982 as a 30-year-old former city employee and 18-year resident of Ann Arbor, unseating three-term incumbent Earl Greene.

At the time, Hunter lived at 610 N. Fifth Ave. in a historically Black neighborhood just north of downtown.

Hunter, an anti-death penalty advocate with the American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, lost in eight of 11 precincts in his first run, but scored heavily in the three precincts that included predominantly Black neighborhoods, The Ann Arbor News reported in 1982.

In a win that somewhat surprised his opponent, he outpolled Greene 70-25 at the Ann Arbor Community Center, 97-35 at the Arrowwood Hills Cooperative and 127-37 at Mack School.

We reached the grass roots, Hunter said. People have traditionally written off Arrowwood, but we didnt.

Prior to being elected, Hunter spent several years working with Ann Arbors public housing and Model Cities youth programs.

He also was on the board of the Community Skills Center, where he once recalled we managed to save a lot of kids and return them to the Ann Arbor Public Schools system. He also served as director of the Ypsilanti Resource Center.

These are some of the most difficult times in Ann Arbors history, Hunter wrote during his 1982 campaign, calling attention to revenue challenges, business losses and declining human services.

However, after many years of grassroots involvement in this community, I know that solutions will be found and that we will prevail and prosper, he said. This is because Ann Arbors greatest asset is its people and the unique human environment they have generated. Now more than ever, we need to mobilize their energies to solve our problems through active participation in the process of city government.

He advocated for holding the line on property tax increases wherever possible, while addressing neighborhood needs. He called for aggressive leadership to ensure the continuation of essential human services by the public sector.

Hunter also thought economic regeneration, along with carefully planned growth, should be among the citys top goals, pursued through broad-based community involvement.

On the campaign trail in 1982, he vowed to give careful consideration to the concept of a Downtown Development Authority, which City Council created during his first term. In November 1982, council adopted a downtown development and tax-increment financing plan to combat urban decline and revitalize downtown.

Hunter vowed to work with downtown businesses to advance equitable measures to improve the business environment and create jobs.

He quickly rose to party leadership after knocking off Greene, an old-guard Democrat, and was known for a blunt and sometimes rambling speaking style, engaging opponents in bitter debate while providing sage political advice for his allies, The News reported.

In a 7-3 vote described as a symbolic blow against apartheid in 1985, Hunter won support for a resolution to divest stock the city held $19 million in city pension funds in companies doing business in South Africa. He carried a Divest Now sign as he marched with protesters in front of city hall beforehand.

In an endorsement in 1990, The News called Hunter a consistent, thoughtful voice for the 1st Ward and a council member who worked skillfully behind the scenes.

He is a respected and knowledgeable politician, whose contributions to the community are numerous, The News wrote, saying one of his strongest traits was his willingness to compromise and find consensus, such as his work with Mayor Jerry Jernigan and other Republicans to assist the Ann Arbor YMCA with building additional housing.

Hunter has put his longevity to good use by taking strong leadership positions on major issues without neglecting the benefits of compromise, The News wrote. He also has represented his district with sensitivity, continues to press for affirmative action and articulates a vision of the city that includes affordable housing.

Few at city hall had a better grasp of the issues or better knowledge of the workings of government than Hunter, The News said.

In January 1991, Hunter, then 39, was arrested by Washtenaw County sheriffs deputies following a traffic stop on Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti, an arrest he and his Democratic colleagues argued amounted to racial harassment.

White deputies who made the arrest alleged Hunter assaulted a deputy after the car in which he was a passenger was stopped because of a broken tail light.

Deputies also arrested the driver, 46-year-old Raymond Chauncey, an Ann Arbor human rights investigator and 21-year employee of the city.

Both men were jailed for about seven hours, according to news reports.

Hunter said the next morning there was absolutely no basis for the arrest and he questioned why deputies asked him for ID and searched him. He said his hand accidentally brushed a deputy while he was being searched and another deputy laughed and said, Thats assault.

The prosecutors office later determined there was not enough evidence for an assault charge.

Deputies claimed Hunter initially did not produce ID when requested and slapped and pushed away a deputys hand three times, and they searched him because he made a rapid movement to his pocket. Hunter maintained he initially didnt identify himself because he wasnt accused of a crime and was asserting his legal rights.

Hunter and Chauncey filed complaints against the sheriffs office alleging they were harassed because they were Black, and the sheriffs office launched an internal investigation.

Ray and I were subjected to brutality and incarceration and received overtly racist treatment by some deputies, Hunter said. It is not a crime to be born as an African American.

City Council Member Ann Marie Coleman, who represented the 1st Ward with Hunter, said she was truly outraged, while Liz Brater, D-3rd Ward, said she was very disturbed.

Everyone reports that when they have a tail light out and theyre stopped by the police, they get a warning, Coleman said. Im speechless that they did all they did with Mr. Chauncey and Mr. Hunter.

Weeks later, Republican Sheriff Ronald Schebil exonerated his deputies, saying they did nothing wrong.

There was probable cause to stop the vehicle, arrest the occupants and detain them at the correctional facility, he said in a news release.

Hunter called the finding an outrage and vowed to file a lawsuit for false arrest, false imprisonment and racial harassment.

He said he and Chauncey were not allowed to call attorneys while they were jailed until they pointed out two white men who also were jailed were given access to a phone.

Sabra Briere, a former 1st Ward council member, recalled this past week how Hunters arrest became a prime example of racial harassment by police when she was president of the Washtenaw County branch of the ACLU in the 1990s.

That was one of the things that people used when the ACLU was looking at driving while Black issues ... and its still an issue, Briere said. It is a shame it happened.

In 1993, as Ann Arbors longest-serving council member, Hunter announced he would not seek another term, saying 12 years is enough. He instead threw his support behind Pat Vereen-Dixon, manager of the Arrowwood Hills housing cooperative, who ran in the citys first November election and became the first Black woman on council.

Hunter later went on to earn a law degree and got involved in supporting lawsuits for fair housing and other issues in Washington, D.C.

Two years ago, while he was in town from D.C., he participated in a 74-minute video interview about his life as part of the Living Oral History Project, a partnership between the Ann Arbor District Library and the African American Cultural and Historical Museum of Washtenaw County.

He recalled his early life, how he became politically active, how he was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and his involvement with the Black Panthers, which he called the first Black mans book club.

He also offered some advice to the younger generation to stay in school and never fall behind on getting an education.

But my most important thing is be yourself and learn how to stand up and fight, he said. And if you get knocked down, you get back up and you keep fighting.

Briere said shes saddened by Hunters loss. She considered him a fighter for human rights and those with lesser means.

Hunter was probably concerned about national issues more than some were comfortable with locally, Briere said.

What Larry was, was a good spokesperson for all politics is local ... think globally, act locally, she said. Those were things that he was always doing.

Why this duo is opening a fitness studio in Jupiter during the pandemic – Palm Beach Post

Sam Howard|Palm Beach Post

JUPITER Between coronaviruslockdowns, consumer worries and the daunting task of keeping things clean, now might seem like an odd time to open a gym.

But Josh Werner and Zachery Eggen see an opportunity for the concept they're bringing to Jupiter. They plan to open a fitness studio called MADabolic during the first quarter of 2021 at 901 W.Indiantown Road in Pennock Square plaza. It will be MADabolic's first location in Florida.

The franchise co-owners say MADabolic's philosophy built around an emphasis on quality, strength-driven intervals is one that should translate well to the pandemic era, when sanitation is aconsumer priority.

The studio's training floor will be 2,600 square feet, which should give members in classesplenty of room to spread out, Werner said. They can book up to 25 people per class, he said.

The space is one ofthe largest in MADabolic's portfolio, which Eggen said was appealing when it came time to shop around for a location. The programcenters on rotating between different stations, with enough time for equipment to bewiped down in between, Wernersaid.

"They'll have their own space," he said."So that kind of helps attack that COVID situation a lot of gyms are running into."

Werner, 35, said he and Eggen first started looking into owning a MADabolic franchise in March. He called it a calculated risk, but one he feels good about based on MADabolic's safety measures andmarket demand should other gyms close. People are going to crave human connection, Werner reasoned, and he's trying to build a close knit culture at MADabolic.

"Are we taking a risk? Hell yeah, we're taking a risk," the Jupiter resident said. "But to achieve anything in life, you have to take a risk."

Eggen, 34, added that the company, based in North Carolina, has long made it a protocol for each facility to be deep-cleaned every night.

The company's philosophy toward fitness is "more is not better, better is better," Eggen said. That means focusing on the quality of reps rather than quantity.

Group classes typically consist of five stations each day two strength movements, one athletic movement and a cardio movement, Werner said.

Both Werner and Eggen have a history in the local fitness industry. Werner said he owned a Crossfit gym in the area from 2011 to 2016.

"For me, I want to create an enthusiasm and a love for taking care of yourself in the same way I have found it to be life-changing and transforming," Eggen said.

They also said they don't want prospective customers to be intimidated.

Eggen said the programis designed to meet people at their skill levels. There will be a nutritional component, too, Werner said, that emphasizes a healthy and sustainable relationship with food.

"It's all about longevity," Eggen said. "This program is about creating long-term health."

They say they hope the new gymwill be the start of somethinglong-lasting, as well.

Thelocation will likely employ five or six people to start, Werner said. The fitness studio will be open seven days a week, with five or six classes a day offered on weekdays and two or three on the weekend in the beginning, Werner said.

The first 100 memberships will be available for $128 a month, Werner said. Then the monthly price will jump to $178.

"We know the Jupiter area very well," Werner said."We both have a really strong following here. Plus our objective ... is to own multiple of these. It's a franchise system and we want to scale with it."

In Togo, There Is Nowhere to Hide – The New York Times

This is an article from World Review: The State of Democracy, a special section that examines global policy and affairs through the perspectives of thought leaders and commentators, and is published in conjunction with the annual Athens Democracy Forum.

In recent years a handful of African countries, including Sudan and Algeria, have said goodbye to longstanding authoritarian rulers, creating openings, however small, for democratic change.

The West African nation of Togo, however, remains firmly under the thumb of a military-backed regime that of the Gnassingbe family, the longest-ruling dynasty on the continent. In recent years, the regime has fully embraced the tactics of digital repression to extend its longevity, outflanking (for now) an increasingly emboldened community of online activists.

The citizens of Togo, a country of roughly eight million people between Ghana to the west and Benin to the east, have lived for more than 50 years under a brutal dictatorship. The nations military regime came to power in 1967, with the installation of the armys chief of staff, Gnassingbe Eyadema, as president. Mr. Eyadema died in 2005, bringing to an end a ruthless 38-year reign marked by widespread human rights abuses. In the months after Mr. Eyademas death, the military-backed candidacy of his son, Faure Gnassingbe, proved victorious in an election marred by serious fraud allegations.

The generations of Togolese activists who had fought the dictatorship of Gnassingbe the First hoped his passing would bring an end to the nations tyranny, paving the way for a brighter democratic future. Instead, Mr. Eyademas death, in February 2005, and the election of his son in April led only to horrific violence: Between 400 and 500 people were killed during those months, with thousands more wounded, according to a United Nations report.

In response to the arrival of Gnassingbe the Second, a new generation of activists came to the fore. The internet was their most powerful tool, and as internet penetration in Togo grew, so did the democratic resistance movement.

I was one of those activists, and like many of my fellow dissidents I have felt empowered in the years since Mr. Gnassingbes rise by the ability to denounce the government its corruption and gangsterism on social media. You may rule over Togo with no accountability, I wrote in a 2014 Facebook post, addressing the administration, but we citizens rule over the internet, and we will hold you accountable.

Unfortunately, the Gnassingbe government isnt keen on any form of resistance, whether in the streets or online. (Mr. Gnassingbe was re-elected in 2010 and 2015 amid accusations of fraud by Togos opposition.) In fact, in recent years it has become increasingly obvious that we underestimated the governments ability to adapt its repressive methods to the digital world.

In the late summer of 2017, major protests quickly spread across the country in support of the oppositions demands that President Gnassingbe resign and that term limits, abolished by his father in 2002, be reinstated. During the monthslong demonstrations, tens of thousands of protesters chanted Faure Must Go, a slogan coined by an activist movement that I co-founded in 2011 with other young Togolese dissidents living in and outside the country. The Faure Must Go movement relied on decentralized digital organizing, which helped many of us maintain our anonymity, protecting us from direct physical repression by leaders.

However, the governments response to the 2017 protests made it clear that we werent as secure as we had thought. In September, the regime shut down the internet for nine days. In the ensuing months, hundreds of protesters were arrested and several were killed, including a 9-year-old boy, according to Amnesty International.

During this time, we received information suggesting that some activists had been arrested and tortured by the government based on evidence gleaned from private conversations that had taken place on WhatsApp, the encrypted messaging app. This gave us a strong hint that the government was spying on us, thus destroying our anonymity as online activists and putting our own security and that of our family members in jeopardy. I was in contact with some of the imprisoned activists for months; many were subsequently forced to flee the country or to go into hiding.

Thanks to a 2018 investigation by Citizen Lab, a cybersecurity research group based at the University of Toronto, we later discovered that a spyware program known as Pegasus was likely being used by the Togolese government to target smartphone users in the country. We believe the regime has used this program to attack the electronic devices of Togolese dissidents.

Pegasus is a product of the NSO Group, an Israeli company that has sold the surveillance technology to numerous governments around the world, solely, the company said, to aid in the fight against terrorism and crime. However, multiple allegations have emerged that the governments in question, some of them with poor human rights records, have also used NSO spyware to target activists, journalists and other civil society leaders. NSO is essentially selling arms to authoritarian governments, fueling abuse and oppression as it puts profits before human dignity.

By late 2018, the Togolese regime had managed to consolidate power by repressing protests and by organizing parliamentary elections under dubious conditions (which the opposition boycotted). It also passed a new cybersecurity law curtailing freedom of expression. As a result of the elections, President Gnassingbe gained the control he needed in Parliament to modify the constitution in his favor: A law passed in 2019 reinstituted the term limits eliminated by his father a major demand of the opposition but it did so while ignoring the three terms Mr. Gnassingbe had already served, potentially allowing him to rule Togo until 2030.

Other West African leaders, including Alpha Cond of Guinea and Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast, have recently followed in Mr. Gnassingbes footsteps by claiming that constitutional changes within their countries have essentially reset the term-limit clock to zero. (It is perhaps no surprise that the 2018 Citizen Lab report found potential Pegasus infections in Ivory Coast.)

When Mr. Gnassingbe ran for a fourth term in February 2020, the opposition had only a microscopic chance of winning. The regime, which retained control of the legislature, barred election monitoring groups from operating in Togo and deployed security forces across the country. Mr. Gnassingbe declared victory with 72 percent of the vote, surpassing his percentages in the 2005, 2010 and 2015 elections, amid further allegations of fraud made by the opposition.

Recent investigations by Citizen Lab and others have revealed that yet more government critics in Togo, including prominent Catholic leaders, have been targeted by NSO surveillance software, as part of an attempt to monitor their conversations and movements. The government seems to have succeeded at maintaining its grip on power in the face of mass protests. The Gnassingbe dynasty, in power for over a half-century, continues.

Yet the thirst for democracy in Togo is stronger than ever. The resistance must now go beyond holding authoritarian regimes accountable and demand that tech companies like NSO also be held responsible for the resources they provide to these governments.

The Togolese regime is ignoring a crucial truth: The internet has given the younger generation a taste of freedom and once people know what it feels like to be free, they can no longer be held in bondage indefinitely.

Farida Nabourema is the executive director of the Togolese Civil League, a nongovernmental organization promoting democracy and the rule of law in Togo, and the spokesperson for the Faure Must Go movement.

HENNESSY CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF XO WITH CARAFE DESIGNED BY FRANK GEHRY – Forbes Africa

The story of Hennessy X.O for the past 150 years has been that of an odyssey. An odyssey that began in Cognac in 1870 before taking on the world and sharing the greatness of its blend with different cultures, from East to West.

The extra old cognac, intended for the inner circle of Maurice Hennessy and cellar master, Emile Fillioux, has become the emblematic blend of the Maison, defining an entire family of cognacs and setting the standard for excellence that lives to this day.

To commemorate Hennessy X.Os 150th year, the Iconic cognac maker unveiled its collaboration with Frank Gehry, one of the most important architects of our age, famed for always being open to experimentation and defying categorization.

Inspired by the Charente River and the multi-faceted experience of the blend, Gehry has created an X.O masterpiece carafe that reflects the iconic and meaningful stature of Hennessy X.O to celebrate this milestone. According to Gehry, he had to immerse himself within the history and creativity involved in Hennessy X.O At first it sounds mystical, but then you go there (Cognac), and experience all that goes into its creation, you see the location on the Charente River, and theres something magical about it. A common feature of Frank Gehry designs is the need to establish presence. It was important to me that it is handmade. Every step in creating Hennessy is handmade, and I wanted everyone to understand how special it is. I tried to create something that has feeling. To take the enormous amount of feeling that goes into making this cognac- all the people involved, all the history involved and express it so somebody who picks up a bottle gets a sense of all that gravitas. Its sort of a symbol of beauty and human expression, that can be transferred forever. Whenever you pick up the bottle, you are curious about the cognac.

The choice of materials for the Anniversary bottles are glass and bronze. The glass sculpture cracks beautifully when removed from the oven and the bronze mold is handmade, so that when the carafe is held, it is able to evoke emotions from all the centuries past.

Mr. Gehry identifies Hennessy as a powerful brand that has existed for a very long time, a symbol that resonates the joy and expression of a lot of people making something beautiful. He describes his collaboration as the very specialness of making art, especially with a brand with integrity. Cognac making is an art, and this contribution of love and attention is to add joy to lives, even in the smallest way. Hennessy X.O is the cognac for every occasion. Its timelessness means that it exists in a realm beyond fashion

Mr. Gehry recognizes the contribution of taste, smell and feeling to the inspiration for his design All you have to do is open the cap and smell the liquid. This is testament to the multisensorial experience which has been parsed into seven distinct chapters that flow seamlessly into one another. While these perceptions tend to vary depending on each persons individual palate and understanding, they typically unfold as sweet notes, flowing flame, rising heat, chocolate lull, spicy edge, wooden crunches and an infinite echo.

The leader in Cognac, the Maison Hennessy has shined around the world with its exceptional blends for more than 250 years. Built on founder Richard Hennessys spirit of conquest, the brand is present in more than 160 countries.

Based in the heart of the Charente region, Hennessy is also a steadfast pillar of the regional economy, the standard-bearer for a sector rich in expertise. The Houses success and longevity are rooted in the excellence of its cognacs, each of which is born of a unique process of transmission from generation to generation.
