Peonage Explained: The system of convict labor was Slavery by another name – Milwaukee Independent

The Obama administration pursued a plan to reform it. An entire news organization, The Marshall Project, was launched in late 2014 to cover it. Organizations like Black Lives Matter and The Sentencing Project are dedicated to unmaking a system that unjustly targets people of color.

But how did we get this system in the first place? Our ongoing historical research project investigates the relationship between the press and convict labor. While that story is still unfolding, we have learned what few Americans, especially white Americans, know: the dark history that produced our current criminal justice system.

If anything is to change if we are ever to end this racial nightmare, and achieve our country, as James Baldwin put it we must confront this system and the blighted history that created it.

During Reconstruction, the 12 years following the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, former slaves made meaningful political, social and economic gains. Black men voted and even held public office across the South. Biracial experiments in governance flowered. Black literacy surged, surpassing those of whites in some cities. Black schools, churches and social institutions thrived.

As the prominent historian Eric Foner writes in his masterwork on Reconstruction, Black participation in Southern public life after 1867 was the most radical development of the Reconstruction years, a massive experiment in interracial democracy without precedent in the history of this or any other country that abolished slavery in the nineteenth century.

But this moment was short-lived. As W.E.B. Du Bois wrote, the slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.

History is made by human actors and the choices they make.

According to Douglas Blackmon, author of Slavery by Another Name, the choices made by Southern white supremacists after abolition, and the rest of the countrys accommodation, explain more about the current state of American life, black and white, than the antebellum slavery that preceded.

Designed to reverse black advances, Redemption was an organized effort by white merchants, planters, businessmen and politicians that followed Reconstruction. Redeemers employed vicious racial violence and state legislation as tools to prevent black citizenship and equality promised under the 14th and 15th amendments.

By the early 1900s, nearly every southern state had barred black citizens not only from voting but also from serving in public office, on juries and in the administration of the justice system.

The Souths new racial caste system was not merely political and social. It was thoroughly economic. Slavery had made the Souths agriculture-based economy the most powerful force in the global cotton market, but the Civil War devastated this economy. How to build a new one?

Ironically, white leaders found a solution in the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery in the United States in 1865. By exploiting the provision allowing slavery and involuntary servitude to continue as a punishment for crime, they took advantage of a penal system predating the Civil War and used even during Reconstruction.

A new form of control

With the help of profiteering industrialists they found yet a new way to build wealth on the bound labor of black Americans: the convict lease system. Heres how it worked. Black men and sometimes women and children were arrested and convicted for crimes enumerated in the Black Codes, state laws criminalizing petty offenses and aimed at keeping freed people tied to their former owners plantations and farms. The most sinister crime was vagrancy the crime of being unemployed which brought a large fine that few blacks could afford to pay.

Black convicts were leased to private companies, typically industries profiteering from the regions untapped natural resources. As many as 200,000 black Americans were forced into back-breaking labor in coal mines, turpentine factories and lumber camps. They lived in squalid conditions, chained, starved, beaten, flogged and sexually violated. They died by the thousands from injury, disease and torture.

For both the state and private corporations, the opportunities for profit were enormous. For the state, convict lease generated revenue and provided a powerful tool to subjugate African-Americans and intimidate them into behaving in accordance with the new social order. It also greatly reduced state expenses in housing and caring for convicts. For the corporations, convict lease provided droves of cheap, disposable laborers who could be worked to the extremes of human cruelty.

Every southern state leased convicts, and at least nine-tenths of all leased convicts were black. In reports of the period, the terms convicts and negroes are used interchangeably.

Of those black Americans caught in the convict lease system, a few were men like Henry Nisbet, who murdered nine other black men in Georgia. But the vast majority were like Green Cottenham, the central figure in Blackmons book, who was snatched into the system after being charged with vagrancy.

A principal difference between antebellum slavery and convict leasing was that, in the latter, the laborers were only the temporary property of their masters. On one hand, this meant that after their fines had been paid off, they would potentially be let free. On the other, it meant the companies leasing convicts often absolved themselves of concerns about workers longevity. Such convicts were viewed as disposable and frequently worked beyond human endurance.

The living conditions of leased convicts are documented in dozens of detailed, firsthand reports spanning decades and covering many states. In 1883, Blackmon writes, Alabama prison inspector Reginald Dawson described leased convicts in one mine being held on trivial charges, in desperate, miserable conditions, poorly fed, clothed, and unnecessarily chained and shackled. He described the appalling number of deaths and appalling numbers of maimed and disabled men held by various forced-labor entrepreneurs spanning the entire state.

Dawsons reports had no perceptible impact on Alabamas convict leasing system. The exploitation of black convict labor by the penal system and industrialists was central to southern politics and economics of the era. It was a carefully crafted answer to black progress during Reconstruction highly visible and widely known. The system benefited the national economy, too. The federal government passed up one opportunity after another to intervene.

Convict lease ended at different times across the early 20th century, only to be replaced in many states by another racialized and brutal method of convict labor: the chain gang. Convict labor, debt peonage, lynching and the white supremacist ideologies of Jim Crow that supported them all produced a bleak social landscape across the South for African-Americans.

Black Americans developed multiple resistance strategies and gained major victories through the civil rights movement, including Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. Jim Crow fell, and America moved closer than ever to fulfilling its democratic promise of equality and opportunity for all.

But in the decades that followed, a tough on crime politics with racist undertones produced, among other things, harsh drug and mandatory minimum sentencing laws that were applied in racially disparate ways. The mass incarceration system exploded, with the rate of imprisonment quadrupling between the 1970s and today. Michelle Alexander famously calls it The New Jim Crow in her book of the same name.

Today, the U.S. has the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world, with 2.2 million behind bars, even though crime has decreased significantly since the early 1990s. And while black Americans make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they make up 37 percent of the incarcerated population. Forty percent of police killings of unarmed people are black men, who make up merely 6 percent of the population. It doesnt have to be this way. We can choose otherwise.

NATICK, MA, USA I July2, 2020 I AffyImmune Therapeutics, Inc. disclosed novel advancements in their proprietary affinity-tuned CAR T-cell programs and technology in three presentations at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). One presentation reported on a new CAR T design for localized and inducible cytokine release. The other two described their affinity-tuned CAR T cell design approach that maintains robust tumor cell killing while reducing toxicity. The company currently has an open IND for the treatment of relapsed or refractory thyroid cancer using an affinity-tuned CAR T-cell targeting the ICAM-1 protein, which is overexpressed in advanced thyroid cancer.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy has shown robust anti-cancer responses in hematologic malignancies, but applying this therapeutic approach to solid tumors has been hindered by multiple challenges, including impaired T cell infiltration of the immune-suppressive tumor environment and on-target/off-tumor cytotoxicity to normal tissues. To improve infiltration and mitigate toxicity, AffyImmune developed CARs with selective targeting and fine-tuned affinity.

Highly localized, inducible interleukin-12 release augments ICAM-1 CAR T cell activity against solid tumors

One presentation (abstract #4359) demonstrated that IL-12 secretion induced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IFN- and TNF- both in vitro and in vivo, suggesting a mechanism by which local release of inducible IL-12 can help overcome hostile tumor microenvironments and augment anti-tumor immune responses. The inducible IL-12 CAR T cells exhibited much more robust elimination of subcutaneous and peritoneal tumors compared to CAR T cells lacking inducible IL-12 expression.

Mitigating on-target off-tumor cytotoxicity of EpCAM CAR-T by affinity tuning

Two additional presentations focused on the multi-cancer biomarker epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM). EpCam is frequently over-expressed in a wide variety of carcinomas, including colon, gastric, pancreas, and breast cancers. This makes EpCAM attractive for targeted therapeutics, but recent clinical trials of EpCAM-targeting therapeutics have shown significant dose-limiting toxicities resulting in limited clinical responses. To selectively target EpCAM high tumors, AffyImmune is developing affinity tuned EpCAM CAR T cells.

In one EpCAM presentation (abstract #4534), author Huan Yang of AffyImmune described the development of AffyImmune's EpCAM targeting technology, which involved a rational design approach incorporating lower-affinity single-chain antibody (scFv) variants. While high-affinity EpCAM-targeting CAR T-cells kill both normal human epithelial cells as well as EpCAM-high tumor cells, AffyImmune's lower affinity CAR T-cells were shown to spare normal human epithelial cells while still effectively killing tumor cells expressing high levels of EpCAM. Further, transcriptional profiling suggested that lower affinity CAR T variants were less prone to exhaustion.

Eradication of EpCAM expressing solid tumors by low-affinity CAR T cells

In the final, complimentary presentation (abstract #4534), it was shown that potent in vivo anti-tumor activity could be obtained using lower affinity CAR T cells in an intraperitoneal gastric cancer model, an orthotopic pancreatic tumor model, and in a PDX model using a gastric cancer patient-derived xenograft. The authors concluded that the technology enabled "eradication of various difficult-to-treat solid tumors, without triggering severe treatment-related toxicities," showing promise for the fine-tuning approach as a general strategy for identifying a therapeutic window for CAR-T cells in challenging, solid tumor types.

Ponce De Leon Health Announces Results Of Pilot Research Suggesting That Biological Age Can Be Reduced In Humans – PRNewswire

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla., June 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Ponce De Leon Health, Inc. ("Ponce de Leon"), a longevity company focused on reversing epigenetic aging, today announced the results of pilot research suggesting that Rejuvant LifeTabs, reduced the biological age of customers by an average of 8.5 years. The biological age was assessed by way of a DNA biomarker test that measures DNA methylation. Of the subjects in the analysis, two-thirds showed a statistically significant reduction in biological age. The analysis was based on data from subjects who had taken Rejuvant LifeTabs for a period of four to six months. Rejuvant, a dietary supplement, is Ponce de Leon's first commercial product.

The data were independently compiled by Dr. Yelena Budovskaya, Ph.D., co-founder and lead scientist of TruMe Labs, a pioneer in the emerging field of epigenetic aging testing. Ponce de Leon is a distributor of TruMe's TruAge Index, a take-at-home, non-invasive epigenetic age test. The subjects included in the analysis represent all 17 customers who had taken a TruAge test at the time of their first purchase of Rejuvant, as well as a second test after taking the supplement for four to six months. The TruAge Index measures DNA methylation, which is growing in acceptance by longevity researchers as an important biomarker of biological aging.

All formulations of LifeTabs contain the proprietary active ingredient LifeAKG,which was shown in recent pre-clinical animal studies to increase lifespan (the length of life) and healthspan (the length of healthy life) in mammalian models. Air pollution is much worse than we thought. Climate change is far from the only problem with fossil fuels. – Vox.com

In the late 1960s, the US saw regular, choking smog descend over New York City and Los Angeles, 100,000 barrels of oil spilled off the coast of Santa Barbara, California, and, perhaps most famously, fires burning on the surface of the Cuyahoga River in Ohio. These grim images sparked the modern environmental movement, the first Earth Day, and a decade of extraordinary environmental lawmaking and rulemaking (much of it under a Republican president, Richard Nixon).

From the 70s through the beginning of the 21st century, the fight against fossil fuels was a fight about pollution, especially air pollution.

In the ensuing decades, the focus has shifted to global warming, and fossil fuels have largely been reframed as a climate problem. And that makes sense, given the enormous implications of climate change for long-term human well-being.

But theres an irony involved: The air pollution case against fossil fuels is still the best case!

In fact, even as attention has shifted to climate change, the air pollution case has grown stronger and stronger, as the science on air pollution has advanced by leaps and bounds. Researchers are now much more able to pinpoint air pollutions direct and indirect effects, and the news has been uniformly bad.

The evidence is now clear enough that it can be stated unequivocally: It would be worth freeing ourselves from fossil fuels even if global warming didnt exist. Especially now that clean energy has gotten so cheap, the air quality benefits alone are enough to pay for the energy transition.

This conclusion has been reaffirmed by the latest air quality research, presented at a recent hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform by Drew Shindell, Nicholas professor of earth science at Duke University (and a lead author on both recent IPCC reports).

Shindells testimony reveals that the effects of air pollution are roughly twice as bad as previously estimated. That is a bombshell in a sane world, it would be front-page news across the country.

The air quality scientific community has hypothesized this for at least a decade, but research advances have let us quantify and confirm this notion, over and over, says Rebecca Saari, an air quality expert who teaches in civil and environmental engineering at the University of Waterloo. The air quality co-benefits are generally so valuable that they exceed the cost of climate action, often many times over.

Lets take a closer look at the evidence for this extraordinary claim, and then well consider its political implications.

Recently, I wrote about an ambitious and detailed new plan to substantially decarbonize the US economy by 2035 (primarily through electrification) and said that it would bring transformative social and health benefits.

Shindell and his team at Duke have attempted to quantify those benefits, drawing on the latest science. They began with the climate model used by NASAs Goddard Institute and upgraded it to represent air pollution at relatively high resolution, Shindell testified, making this model suitable for simultaneously studying the impact of climate and air quality.

Using this all-in-one model, Shindells team mapped out a pathway from 2020 to 2070 that reduced US greenhouse gas emissions consistent with the worlds pledge to stay below 2C and attempted to quantify the air quality and climate benefits.

(Note: Though the model and the techniques have been peer-reviewed, Shindells crunching of the latest numbers is currently going through peer review. He includes extensive documentation of his methodology in an appendix to his testimony.)

The numbers are eye-popping. Shindell testified: Over the next 50 years, keeping to the 2C pathway would prevent roughly 4.5 million premature deaths, about 3.5 million hospitalizations and emergency room visits, and approximately 300 million lost workdays in the US.

All that prevented death, illness, and lost productivity adds up to a lot of savings:

The avoided deaths are valued at more than $37 trillion. The avoided health care spending due to reduced hospitalizations and emergency room visits exceeds $37 billion, and the increased labor productivity is valued at more than $75 billion. On average, this amounts to over $700 billion per year in benefits to the US from improved health and labor alone, far more than the cost of the energy transition.

Importantly, many of the benefits can be accessed in the near term. Right now, air pollution leads to almost 250,000 premature deaths a year in the US. Within a decade, aggressive decarbonization could reduce that toll by 40 percent; over 20 years, it could save around 1.4 million American lives that would otherwise be lost to air quality.

Of the potential yearly deaths prevented, Rep. Robin Kelly of Illinois remarked at the hearing, Thats a huge number. Thats nearly three times the number of lives we lose in car accidents every year. Its twice the number of deaths caused by opioids in the past few years. And its even more than the number of Americans we lose to diabetes each year.

If the numbers are shocking, its because the science has been developing rapidly. First, says Shindell, theres been a huge upsurge in work in developing countries, in particular China, which has produced larger data sets and a wider, fuller picture of the real-world effects of exposure.

Second, where scientists used to focus almost exclusively on pollution effects for which there is an established and well-understood biological pathway, the recent production of enormous data sets (for instance, the entire population of more than 60 million Medicare patients) has allowed them to uncover new statistical correlations.

With giant data sets, you can control for socioeconomic status, temperature, hypertension and other existing conditions, and other variables, says Shindell. You can convincingly demonstrate that correlation is in fact causal, because you can rule out essentially every other possibility.

For example, scientists now know that exposure to smog (tiny, microscopic particulates) hurts prenatal and young brains. Even though they dont yet fully understand the biological mechanism, they know it reduces impulse control and degrades academic performance. Similarly, they know it hurts the kidneys, the spleen, even the nervous system.

The well-understood pathways, things like strokes, lower respiratory infections, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, only seem to capture about half the total, Shindell says. When you look at the [new] studies, you find that air pollution seems to affect almost every organ in the human body.

A recent study from the national academies of multiple countries, including the US, put it this way:

The scientific evidence is unequivocal: air pollution can harm health across the entire lifespan. It causes disease, disability and death, and impairs everyones quality of life. It damages lungs, hearts, brains, skin and other organs; it increases the risk of disease and disability, affecting virtually all systems in the human body.

About twice as many people die in total as die just from the pathways we understand, says Shindell. Weve been underestimating all along.

Alongside these updated estimates of air pollution impacts, Shindells team developed a new way of assessing the nationwide health impacts of severe heat, in order to quantify one of the best-understood effects of climate change. Combining them into one model, Shindell testified, we find impacts roughly double those that would have been obtained using older evidence.

While that may sound like a big jump, it is likely a lower bound. On both air pollution and climate change, the study omitted many effects that are clearly present but cannot yet be reliably quantified. The true numbers are almost certainly higher.

The implications of this new air quality research are far-reaching. Though the benefits of the Clean Air Act were already thought to outweigh the costs, they may be twice as high as previously estimated. The costs of Trumps rollbacks of Obamas fuel economy standards and Clean Power Plan are up to twice as large as previously estimated.

It is no coincidence that Trumps Environmental Protection Agency is trying to exclude consideration of co-benefits (often the largest class of benefits) in its air quality rulemakings. Its no coincidence that it is trying to exclude consideration of studies with anonymous participants, a category that encompasses all the latest research Shindell and others draw on. The fossil fuel lobby, which now includes the entire executive branch, has long understood that the science isnt going its way. These rule changes are its last-ditch bid to blind the government to new research.

Climate change has often been framed as an intractable problem for international coordination, a matter of shared sacrifice, with every country incentivized to be a free rider, reaping the benefits without taking on any of the costs.

But the latest air pollution research, coupled with the plunging cost of clean energy, should render that dynamic moot.

It is true that climate change can only be averted with the entire worlds cooperation; if the US reduces its emissions to net zero but the other countries of the world (especially China and India) continue on their current trajectory, it will make almost no difference in temperature. The health benefits of avoided severe heat will not manifest.

However and this is the crucial fact the air quality benefits will manifest, no matter what the rest of the world does. Shindells team ran a version of their scenario in which the US came into compliance with a 2C pathway but the rest of the world continued with current policies. We found that US action alone would bring us more than two-thirds of the health benefits of worldwide action over the next 15 years, Shindell testified, with roughly half the total over the entire 50-year period analyzed.

The air quality benefits arrive much sooner than the climate benefits. They are, at least for the next several decades, much larger. They can be secured without the cooperation of other countries. And, by generating an average of $700 billion a year in avoided health and labor costs, they will more than pay for the energy transition on their own. Climate change or no climate change, its worth ditching fossil fuels.

And if this is true in the US which, after all, has comparatively clean air it is true tenfold for countries like China and India, where air quality remains abysmal. A Lancet Commission study in 2017 found that in 2015, air pollution killed 1.81 million people in India and 1.58 million in China.

Shindells research reveals that those estimates may be woefully low. (He hopes to do similar modeling on China at some point.) The true toll may be almost double that, which is why both countries have experienced mass demonstrations against pollution in recent years that have left their governments scrambling.

Air pollution remains the leading environmental health risk factor contributing to premature death worldwide, as demonstrated repeatedly by the Global Burden of Disease studies, says Saari. Health care costs and lost worker productivity are direct economic impacts of air pollution so large they can exceed the costs of climate policy.

Shindell ended with a call to Congress, testifying that it would be unconscionable to realize these benefits could be obtained and not attempt to obtain them.

The extraordinary level of suffering humanity is currently experiencing from air pollution is not necessary for modernity; it could be reduced, at a cost well below the net social benefits, with clean energy technologies on hand.

If they are not necessary, then the millions of lives ended or degraded by fossil fuels every year are a choice. And when suffering on this scale, that is this brutally inequitable, becomes a choice, it enters the same ethical terrain as war, slavery, and genocide. The effects are more distributed over time and geography, as are the decision-making and the moral culpability, but the cumulative impact on human well-being on our longevity, health, learning, and happiness is comparable, and every bit as much worth fighting.

US policymakers have a chance to kick-start an energy transition that could save 1.4 million American lives over the next 20 years, especially among the most vulnerable, even as it creates jobs and saves consumers money. As Shindell says, it would be unconscionable not to act on it.

The resiliency of white-tailed deer – – Adirondack Almanack

Editors note: This is part two of a two-part series.

Deer appear in paleolithic cave paintings at Altamira, on the north coast of Spain, going back 36,000 years.

The white tailed deer has been in North America for about 4 million years, making the white tail one of the real veterans of nearly all varying habitats in North America, ranging from Nova Scotia west to southern Alberta, sweeping south into Central America, with gaps west of the Rockies.

To put that in perspective, modern moose have only been in North America about 15,000 years, having migrated through Berengia about the same time the ancestors of native Americans began to trickle across.

In North America, moose have much more serious problems with winter ticks in affected habitats than deer have. For example, deer go through winter with an average of about 300 winter ticks, while moose may accumulate from 10,000 to 90,000 winter ticks, a condition which is probably a serious factor in why moose are in trouble all along the US-Canadian border from Maine to Minnesota. Winter ticks are beginning to show up in New York as well. Are white tails simply more efficient groomers, or could there be a connection related to longevity in habitat, and the ability of animals to adapt to parasites and challenges not found in previous habitats?

Deer on the food chain

Deer have played a major role in human nutrition and survival for a very long time. European immigrants to America, learned from native Americans about utilizing all parts of the white tail. Deer numbers rose and fell in the 19th century with market hunting by both native Americans and the growing numbers of settlers and immigrants, joining individual hunting, along with deforestation and destruction of deer habitat. State regulation of hunting slowed down the hunting free-for-all, and helped increase deer numbers, but two other factors in the first decades of the 20th century led to an explosion of deer.

Everything in nature is connected. The increasing suburbanization and the expansion of farming in America had the effect of moving more people into deer habitat, while introducing deer to our orchards, crops and gardens, thereby increasing their ability to making a living and reproduce. The more deer saw, heard and smelled human activity, without being shot at, the more it helped to inure them to the dangers of our presence.

In an environment without humans, gray wolves tend to be the number one controller of both deer and western coyotes, the latter in competition for safer prey, smaller than moose, elk and bison, but the accelerating persecution of gray wolves, which included poisoning campaigns and bounties led to an explosion of both deer and coyotes. Predators tend to strengthen the health of prey populations by detecting and eliminating disease and weakness. An unfortunate example of why we shouldnt eliminate predators is the reappearance of chronic wasting disease, an infectious disease in deer which is slowly spreading in areas where wolves had historically kept it in check.

As wolf habitat in the lower 48 dwindled to Minnesota, the only state which kept the Federal wolfers out, western coyote numbers exploded out west, leading to a manifest destiny in reverse, with coyotes increasingly moving east under and over the Great Lakes, exploiting available wolf habitat in the lower 48, and causing further hybridization of Algonquin wolves in Ontario and Quebec, already averaging 20% western coyote going back tens of thousands of years, long before there were any humans in North America.

Yes, you read that correctly. Wolves have the most dangerous job in nature for two reasons. An alpha female may deliver 4 to 7 pups every Spring. While it is much safer for wolves to go after deer, snowshoe hare and beaver, pressure to produce food compels wolves to go after much larger, more dangerous prey, such as moose, elk and bison. Moose, for example, are so dangerous in defending themselves, that wolves test 20 moose for each one they decide to take a chance and attack. As though that factor in intself didnt make a wolfs life dangerous enough, in wolf economics, the pack has to defend a territory large enough to contain enough prey for the pack to make a living, and if a neighboring packs territory is not producing, theyll be invading another packs territory, which will result in wolves killing each other over access to prey. Add these factors to our inclination to shoot and trap wolves, and wolves are lucky to reach their fifth birthday in the wild.

Gray wolves tend to kill coyotes, just as coyotes kill fox, routinely and opportunistically eliminating the smaller predator, as a means of creating a larger base of smaller, safer prey, but starting in Minnesota and heading east over Lake Superior, young male wolves, who disperse from, in other words, leave Mom and Dads territory, to seek an unguarded territory, or a territory they may be able to take over, may discover that female wolves dont generally disperse as far as males, so they may end up defending a territory no other wolf wants, and they may end up mating with a female coyote.

Deer hunters tend to bemoan the impact of eastern coydogs, more accurately termed coywolves, because of their hybridization with Algonquin wolves, on the deer population in the Northeast. But the coyote impact on deer numbers is much greater on fawns than it is on adults, partly thanks to our assistance with traffic accidents supplying deer as roadkill. A study by SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry a few years back concluded that, excluding fawns, 92% of deer eaten by coyotes in New York were killed by cars. About 60% of fawns reach maturity, while 80% of fawn mortality is caused by predators, including bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, bobcats, lynx, fishers, eagles, and even foxes. Other fawn mortality factors range from car accidents to getting caught in fencing or under farm equipment, or natural causes like starvation and drowning.

More recently, hunting generally, and deer hunting in particular, which peaked among baby boomers in 1982, while rising in some states, and falling in others, is in a fairly steady decline nationwide. Weve lost 10% of all hunters in the last ten years, with less than 4% of Americans involved in hunting today, at exactly a time when, having largely eliminated wolves, natures tool for deer control, we need more human hunters to control deer numbers. For those concerned about health and red meat, venison is much leaner than beef, and probably half the calories.

Controlling deer without natural predators is no easy problem. Highest deer densities are often found in thickly settled suburban areas, where it is unsafe, and often illegal, to fire rifles within 500 feet of a dwelling, or shoot arrows, and the deer take a heavy toll on gardens and landscaping generally. Some towns and villages are experimenting with immunocontraception, to cut down the number of does breeding. Such methods may require multiple doses, and may only be good for a couple of years. Other towns employ specially vetted deer hunters to control local deer populations. Habitat carrying capacities, which increase as deer learn how to eat more human planted and invasive vegetation, determine how many deer a particular area can support, which means as you eliminate deer, other deer come in from surrounding areas.

This is a lesson we seem to refuse to understand. As we eliminate animals from habitat, for example beavers, they are replaced by other beavers who are attracted to the habitat for the same reason the removed beavers were. Its good beaver habitat. The same thing happens with deer, but because deer eat a much wider range of vegetation, and learn to eat our gardens, as well as invasive plants, they expand the areas they can make a living in. We always treat the symptom, rather than the cause, and end up throwing natures balance further out of whack.

In New York State, we have just under a million deer, with 60 to 70 thousand in the Adirondacks, and about 70,000 vehicle deer collisions statewide annually. Hunters took about 225,000 deer in New York State in 2018. As elegant and visually appealing as white tails are, their lives tend to be violent and short, with the average age of death for deer being about 3 years old. As a sign of the times, the mosquito, which for 80 years was the most likely animal to be involved in human mortality in the lower 48 states, just as it is in most moderately temperate countries, was knocked out of first place by the white tailed deer, because of the number of people killed in accidents involving deer.

Over Bathing If a fish is deprived of its scales, it will be chilled to death; and reasoning analogically, and knowing, too, that the human skin scales are destroyed by the alkali of the soap, a man may wash himself too much may actually wash away the scales of his body, leaving the pores so unprotected against heat and cold and obstructions, that death will inevitably ensue; indeed, physiological research proves that if a third of the skin is removed from the body by scalding or otherwise, a fatal termination is unavoidable.

Observant persons know how soon the skin becomes pale, shriveled and tender, even on the harder hands, if kept a great deal in cold water. These are suggestive considerations for those who believe that continued water sloshings are indispensable to health and longevity Halls Journal of Health.

New potatoes have been in market more than a week. This beats the lower country by at least two weeks. The Oregonians are in the habit of shipping their early vegetables from California. Henceforth we would recommend them to ship their supplies in this line from this valley.

Jacquire King on Combining New Technology and Human Performance to Find The Organic Grid – Twice

Nashville, TN, June 30, 2020 Whether lending his aural sensibility to breakthrough releases like Kings of Leons Only By The Night and Modest Mouses Good News For People Who Love Bad News or capturing intimate moments in the studio with eclectic singer-songwriters like Tom Waits and Norah Jones, producer/engineer Jacquire King has made his mark in music by knowing how to use the right combination of a classic analog recording sensibility with the latest in digital technology. By employing variations of this combination to suit the artists he works with, King has been able to create recordings with unique and contemporary sonic identities, something that he sees as vital to their success and longevity.

The DNA of modern recording

Kings combinative approach to the analog and the digital were born out of his own sensibilities as a listener. Raised on rootsy genres like classic rock, rhythm and blues, and soul music gave him an appreciation for passionate, human performances. At the same time however, King was drawn to the production creativity of golden age hip-hop and early electronic records for their sonic boundary pushing as well as their ability to reclaim these human elements in different contexts. This gave him a taste for seeking out ways to combine an old school sensibility with the latest sonic flavors that he could get his hands on to keep things fresh and interesting. My philosophy as a producer and engineer is to find the most powerful combinations in the studio between sound and technique in order to move us towards a creative outcome, King said. This ensures that the artists will have a successful experience and that the end listener will be hearing something with a unique sonic stamp.

Another key part of ensuring a unique sonic stamp on his productions comes from preserving the relationship between performers on the initial performances, something King says also informs the work to follow. The relationships inherent in a performance and the way that people play together has its own unique grid and personality, he said. When you make the relationships a part of the DNA of the recordings it creates a unique identifier and everything you add on after the fact is informed by that identity.

Building off the organic grid from there, King will often add programmed percussion and other elements to flesh out the sonics of the song. Doing so allows him to add depth and detail to the arrangements, something that the performers themselves will often key off of when adding overdubs later on. Having those elements can help give them something to react to when performing, he said. It elevates the moment for the performers to have all that texture and youll sometimes get stronger performances out of it.

Accuracy and precision

King primarily works out of his private studio just south of Nashville. He uses a combined analog and digital signal flow, often tracking to 2 tape while mixing in Pro Tools with a Quad 8 desk. A meticulous listener, King started using Amphion Two18 speakers for his monitoring needs in order to ensure that he was getting the most accurate response possible. I was hosting a Mix with the Masters and one of the attendees strongly suggested I check out the Amphion line, he explained. Soon after, I had the opportunity and I was immediately blown away by how precise they felt. It was totally different from any other monitor that I had heard before.

King had previously used many different types of monitors but had struggled to find one that was giving him the accuracy and truth that he needed for his mixes. I dont like the modern take on the studio monitor because it makes everything sound good, he said. When that happens, you arent working as hard as you should be to manage your frequency spectrum and you end up having a lot of translation issues.

Since he began using Amphion four years ago, King says that hes been able to trust his ears much more and that his workflow has benefited from the clarity and honesty. They are incredibly accurate speakers and theyve been a real lifesaver for me, he said. Previously I was mixing a song a day. Now I know I can trust the frequency response and crossover points so much that Im mixing two or three songs a day and getting way fewer notes back from clients.

I trust then more than any monitor Ive ever had, he continued. It helps me to mix with confidence, and at the end of the day they just disappear and help me move at the speed of my creativity.

Five organizations in southern Ariz. continuing to pursue bold environmental projects amid the pandemic – Arizona Daily Wildcat

Recently, environmental organizations have had to slow down much of their efforts to promote the safety of staff and an awareness of other pressing societal issues. Some believe that this is even resulting in opportunities for the government to sneak in and break apart environmental regulations, without the defense systems of environmental organizations.

The New York Times recently reported the Trump administration is in the process of rolling back on 34 environmental provisions, such as the National Environmental Policy Act and multiple Obama-era rules.

With COVID-19 and also the protests, people arent necessarily as focused on environmental issues that are happening right now, explained Harold Thomas, the associate director of the Watershed Management Group in Tucson. So, it's an easy time for government to roll back a lot of legislation.

Still, environmental initiatives held by a diverse range of organizations in southern Arizona are proving resilience during these difficult times. Five companies, Patagonia Area Resource Alliance, Sky Island Alliance, the Sonoran Institute, Zero-Mass Water and Local First AZ are showing that environmentalists can feel some optimism despite the whirlwinds hitting American society and the environment.

In Patagonia, the environmental watchdog organization Patagonia Area Resource Alliance has a history of keeping an eye on industrial mining in the area. For years, PARA has taken steps to hold industrial mining companies to the highest environmental standards, and this has not halted in times of the pandemic.

During the pandemic, PARA staff are continuing to monitor mining activities in a variety of ways, according to Anna Sofia, the communications and outreach coordinator. Since 2012, PARA has been tracking animals in the Patagonia Mountains with cameras to see what effects industrial mining is having on the wildlife and ecosystems. Sofia and another staff member have been continuously going out into the mountains to check these cameras.

Carolyn Shafer, PARAs mission coordinator, explained the importance of wildlife protection and monitoring in the area. She said that poor industrial mining practices could be very harmful to the wildlife and that it is a human responsibility to ensure protection.

An important thing that we need to do as humans is to assure the longevity of all species, said Shafer. The Patagonia Mountains are part of a region that has been identified by scientists as one of the top areas in the world, most in need of protection and study for species survival.

Similar to PARAs own wildlife tracking project in the Patagonia Mountains, the organization is also partnering with the Sky Island Alliance and the Mexican organization Naturalia Sonora to track wildlife along the border of Mexico. This project is meant to study the biodiversity in the region of border-wall expansion.

The organization has also been monitoring effects on the regions waterways. For example, they recently found what seems to be a leaking mine site left from historical industrial mining. Sofia describes that they have found acid mine-drainage that is flowing across a road in a canyon in the area. PARA is trying to monitor what impacts this may have on the water and reporting on it to the U.S. Forest Service.

We are actively out in nature keeping an eye on things, which has been really good, and we have still been able to do that throughout the pandemic, Sofia said.

In light of pandemic safety precautions, Sofia said that PARA is also hoping to create a multi-platform online educational program to engage the public on the risks and realities of industrialized mining. They are looking to fund much of this program with a recent grant received from Western Mining Action Network.

PARAs primary focus acting as a watchdog against poor industrial mining practices may be more important now than ever. Shafer explained that from the mid-1800s to around 1960, a total of 250,000 tons of ore was extracted from the Patagonia Mountains. Just one of the companies looking to mine now looks to remove about the same amount of ore from the mountains every 10 days.

Shafer and Sofia identified some of the major dangers that PARA looks to hold mining companies accountable for. One risk of poor mining practices is the fracturing and scarring of mountains, which would allow water from the Sonoita Creek Watershed to be diverted into those areas. Then, as the water picks up residue from mining and extracted metals, water sources important for humans and wildlife can become highly contaminated.

Additionally, Sofia noted that another worry is noise and light pollution from exploratory and underground drilling. These unnatural sounds and sights can negatively impact species in the area. For example, it can put burdens on threatened species of birds such as Mexican spotted owls and affect migration patterns, scattering populations and creating an inability to reproduce.

With everything going on in the world from environmental pressures like poor industrialized mining practices to the pandemic, Shafer stresses that PARA and the Patagonia community are staying resilient.

I have lived in this community for more than 20 years, and given the chaos of the times, there is no place nor any other group of people that I want to be with as we move through these multiple crises, Shafer said. This community has every skill set needed to co-create a thriving and resilient community and we are determined to do so.

The primary actor in the aforementioned Border Wildlife Study initiative that PARA is participating in was launched by Sky Island Alliance. Sky Island Alliance is a nonprofit in Tucson focused on protecting precious water resources, wildlife and creating awareness around the Sky Island natural region.

According to Emily Burns, the program director for Sky Island Alliance, the Border Wildlife Study was created in early March to document the wildlife community in the foothills of the Patagonia Mountains, the Huachuca Mountains and the San Rafael Valley. To do so, the organization and its project partners PARA and Naturalia Sonora have placed heat-activated and motion-activated cameras in the areas. Burns explained that these cameras are carefully arranged in a way that they can track both migrating species like black bears and mountain lions, and also the local diversity of animals.

The Sky Island Alliance formed this project in response to the Trump administrations border wall and its potential impacts on biodiversity. Burns explained that the federal government is furthering Trumps border wall project, and new waivers have been issued, allowing the construction to proceed without any environmental review.

We felt it was imperative to step in and collect information about what animals are actually here in the path of the coming border wall so that we can share that information with the public and go forward with eyes-wide-open about potential impacts to species that we care about, said Burns.

Though no border wall has been constructed yet in the region, Burns notes that past border wall studies have shown negative impacts on various species. She said that even flying species have been shown to be negatively affected, such as the once-endangered ferruginous pygmy owl.

Some of the negative effects described by Burns that could be the result of continued border wall construction include the division of natural habitats, an inability for migratory species to move and habitat fragmentation.

Burns said that in the short term, Sky Island Alliance hopes that this data can inspire people to stand up against border wall construction. In the long term, they hope that it will be baseline data that can help the public, voters and decision-makers be aware of the wildlife in the region.

Another Tucson-based organization that has been quite active in environmental initiatives and projects in the recent past is the Sonoran Institute. According to the institutes Senior Director of Programs, John Shepard, it is a community-based organization focused on connecting communities to the natural resources that nourish and sustain them.

Recently, the Sonoran Institute has been active in three major projects. These projects include the restoration of the Laguna Grande, upcoming Growing Water Smart workshops and the Living River Reports.

Since 2006, the institute has been partnering with U.S. and Mexican environmental organizations to restore Laguna Grande, a site on the Colorado River in Mexico. According to Shepard, it is the largest restoration site in the Colorado River delta.

The Sonoran Institute was inspired to restore the flow of water through the site, the natural habitat for riparian species and the groundwater for nearby impoverished areas. These are all factors that have been damaged by the Colorado River degradation.

Over many decades as Colorado River water has been dammed and diverted, the connection between the river and the sea was lost, and over 90% of the original delta was lost as well, Shepard said.

The second initiative, Growing Water Smart, is a training program for cities, towns and counties focusing on water efficiency as the Colorado River and Lake Mead lose the capacity to provide for people. Shepard said that the Sonoran Institute has trained around 30 communities so far. Much of this training is targeted toward community water leaders and public utilities.

It tries to get the people who are responsible for water supply, which tend to be your utilities, to talk and plan in coordination with people who are making decisions that will affect water demand in the future, Shepard said.

The third major project that is being pursued by the Sonoran Institute is the continued production of Living River Reports. These are annual reports documenting the condition of the Santa Cruz River.

For some time now, facilities have been restoring the flow of water in much of the Santa Cruz River by adding treated wastewater to it. The Sonoran Institutes reports aim to not only examine the health of the river as treated wastewater is deposited but also to make the case for improvements of treated wastewater quality.

Shepard said that over time, as these reports have been produced and treated wastewater quality has been upgraded, they have seen promising signs of improvement in river health. For example, they have recorded the return of the Gila topminnow, an endangered fish, to the Santa Cruz River.

Despite a series of changes that have had to be made, the Sonoran Institute and its initiatives have shown resilience during times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, Shepard urges people in the environmental field to maintain a sense of optimism during this time.

Zero Mass Water, a Scottsdale based company, has been advancing the usage of hydropanels to provide safe, clean drinking water for industrial, commercial, residential and community applications. They mention how access to safe water is a human right for every community throughout the world.

Hydropanels are machines that collect water vapor from surrounding air, and then condense the vapor by increasing the humidity once it reaches the hydropanel. Panels are then arranged in such a way that it allows vapor droplets to collect and provide water. This water is then purified, ozonated and mineralized. This essentially makes the production of water an infinite and renewable source.

Zero Mass Waters initiatives look to provide the world with clean drinking water through a renewable energy source thus the Zero Mass title.

These hydropanels built by Zero Mass Water help provide water to areas across Arizona, even when various environmental challenges plague the community.

CEO of Zero Mass Water, Cody Friesen, stated that access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right that is often too expensive, too wasteful, too extractive, and too scarce. Their hydropanels have helped to slow this problem by providing clean water to areas of Arizona that needed them the most.

With major burgeoning environmental challenges hurting Arizona such as excessive heat and water shortages, implementing a plan to obtain drinking water is important. According to the Fourth National Climate Assessment, water resources in the Southwest have already declined because of the growing population, deteriorating infrastructure and groundwater depletion, as well as human-induced climate change. Zero Mass Water is working to combat these challenges in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way.

Zero Mass Water looks to help communities not only in Arizona but across the world. With the climate changing the environmental frontier, it is uncertain to say what will happen to the main water sources that feed into major cities and rural areas.

This will be a risk for many due to the lack of availability of freshwater. Already, the United Nations indicated that 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress. In response to these growing concerns, Zero Mass Water has implemented hydropanels in more than 40 other countries.

The pandemic has not slowed the companys bold efforts. Recent funding and expansion efforts with help from several organizations like BlackRock, Duke Energy and Breakthrough Energy, have allowed Zero Mass Water to further its hydropanel endeavors. According to Business Wire, they recently raised $50 million.

Phoenix-based organization focused on uplifting and empowering local businesses Local First AZ has partnered with the Tucson 2030 District, to launch a significant initiative for Tucson businesses. On May 20, Local First AZ helped to launch the Southern Arizona Green Businesses Alliance.

In recent years, Local First AZ has taken big steps to try and foster sustainable transformation in the southern Arizona economy. In 2018, the organization helped to launch Scale Up, a program for businesses to enrich sustainable actions through green workshops, networking and projects. In 2019, the organization launched the Arizona Green Business Program, a certification process aimed toward reducing environmental footprints.

Now, the introduction of the green alliance is a further step for Local First AZ. This alliance allows businesses to engage in three parts. The first part is the Green Business Leaders Program. This entry-level program provides a checklist for sustainable practices that will end with a follow-up consultation, recognition for sustainable leadership and more benefits such as marketing.

The next part is Scale Up, adopted from the original program started in 2018. This is an intermediate level program with more interactive learning opportunities.

The last part is the involvement in the Tucson 2030 District. Tucsons district is part of a collaborative effort among national districts to reduce water and energy consumption and emissions from transportation by 50% as soon as 2030.

According to Claire Kaufman, the sustainability program manager for Local First AZ, the program has been adjusted in many ways to adapt organizations to current circumstances.

COVID hit and we did a lot of adjustment on the programs to focus them even more on resiliency, so how businesses can be prepared in cases of disaster, Kaufman said.

Kaufman also described that adjustments have been made to the programs to integrate a more holistic education, including lessons on equity, social justice and environmental justice.

Its about making an economy that is environmentally resilient, economically resilient and socially resilient, Kaufman said.

A wide range of environmentally-concerned organizations are continuing to take strides toward improving the health of ecosystems, important natural resources and communities during the times of the pandemic.

The Patagonia Area Resource Alliance, the Sky Island Alliance, the Sonoran Institute, Zero Mass Water and Local First AZ are only five of the many organizations fighting against the odds to ensure environmental resilience despite everything that is happening.

For example, Watershed Management Group launched an initiative called Steward in Place, with the goal of connecting people to projects they can do from home that can help with an array of Tucsons environmental concerns.

According to Shepard, this resilience is at the core of environmentalism.

To be an environmentalist means youre an optimist."

With most workplaces shut to stem the spread of Covid-19 during the circuit breaker period, the importance of flexible work arrangements and the use of technology to facilitate remote working came under the spotlight like never before.

Now, as Singapore has entered phase two of reopening its economy, working from home continues to remain the default for most employees.

In the third episode of the askST@NLB podcast series, The Straits Times' manpower correspondent Joanna Seow, along with Singapore Human Resources Institute president Low Peck Kem and Singapore National Employers Federation executive director Sim Gim Guan, considered these new ways of working, as well as the sustainability of the current workforce.

"It took us a crisis to get us going in the direction (of greater digitalisation)," said Ms Seow, adding that this could bring about "transformation in essential service sectors like healthcare, cleaning and public transport". Jobs in these sectors will soon become less labour intensive, owing to telemedicine, robots and autonomous vehicles.

Mr Sim said companies should transform the way they do business. "They will need to upskill and reskill their workers, so that they can take on new jobs or new ways of doing their job," he added.

Aside from acquiring skills in information and communication technology, employees should equip themselves with relevant "analytical, conceptual and evaluative skills", along with interpersonal skills that could help improve their employability, said Mr Sim.

By leveraging technology and redesigning work processes, Singapore will be able to focus on productivity and reduce its reliance on both foreign and local manpower. This is pertinent since the citizen working-age population is expected to shrink from around this year.

To address this, Singapore should "tap older workers, as well as those who are economically inactive", explained Mr Sim. This is where flexible work arrangements will prove crucial.

Many older workers tend to favour part-time work. Those who are economically inactive mainly comprise female workers who have exited the workforce for family and caregiving reasons. Hence, having flexi-work arrangements and schemes like the Professional Conversion Programme could ease them back into the workforce.

Ms Low introduced the idea of "productive longevity" - that living longer entails having people "work longer to ensure (their) retirement adequacy".

"When more services can be delivered digitally or virtually, biases like age, looks, nationality and geographical location get diminished, so people in their 60s or 70s who want to remain active and productive can continue to do so," she said.

The fourth episode of the askST@NLB podcast series, slated for July 3, will feature Straits Times senior food correspondent Wong Ah Yoke and hotelier-restaurateur Loh Lik Peng.

It is titled: The new normal in restaurant dining. The episode will examine how the Covid-19 pandemic has transformed the food and beverage landscape in Singapore.

In the meantime, in order to ensure that flexible work arrangements remain sustainable, especially working from home, a relationship of trust has to be established between the supervisor and the employee. Ms Low stressed that supervisors should seek to understand the challenges of older employees "and provide them with the assurance that (they) will walk the journey with them to have them accustomed to the new way of work".

The 25-minute podcast, which is part of a collaboration between ST and the National Library Board, was released yesterday and is available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, the ST Facebook page, radio station Money FM 89.3 and at str.sg/JWfR.

Gisele Wertheim Aymes speaks to Dr. Simon Whitesman (MBChB) about why mindfulness is medicine. Dr. Whitesman is a practitioner of medical psychotherapy at Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town and chairman of the Institute of Mindfulness.

A: I always wanted to be a doctor. However, when I became one, the experience was nothing that I had imagined. There was a strong missing element. Then a colleague suggested I start meditating. I had heard of TM, so I went and did TM training. This helped me become very disciplined, and it made a relatively quick and deep impact on my physical well-being. I had suffered from tension headaches and now found relief. And it was this that started my scientific interest in meditation.

When I read Quantum Healing by Deepak Chopra, I experienced an epiphany. It was like walking into a room I had been in and recognizing everything.

It resonated with me. This idea that raising consciousness is the basis for all healing like a key fitting into a lock.

And from there I began an exploration of this insight. I have walked many paths as a psychotherapist. From mind-body connection and Buddhist contemplative therapies to more contemporary approaches to mindfulness. This is where I have really found more meaning now in a more contemporary approach to mindfulness.

A: I discovered it was about my own healing a parallel process while wanting to find expression as a clinician and a doctor. And then recognizing a symmetry on the inside that was compelling for me, in terms of my own path and personal growth.

Then, through Jon Kabat-Zinns work, I was exposed to mindfulness, which is not the same as TM.

Jon Kabat-Zinn is an American professor emeritus of medicine, and creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in the US. Kabat-Zinn was a student of Zen Buddhist teachers such as Philip Kapleau, Thich Nhat Hanh and Seung Sahn, and a founding member of the Cambridge Zen Center. His practice of yoga and studies with Buddhist teachers led him to integrate their teachings with scientific findings. He teaches mindfulness, which he says can help people cope with stress, anxiety, pain, and illness. The stress-reduction program created by Kabat-Zinn, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), is offered by medical centers, hospitals, and health-maintenance organizations.

A: The original roots of mindfulness are part of a set of teachings from Buddha 2 500 years ago. Buddha was a human who woke up to who he was and developed a way of teaching others to help them wake up. Central to this path was mindfulness. There were obviously many other aspects, but mindfulness was central.

Kabat-Zinn understood that there are so many people who could benefit from mindfulness, but who were not necessarily interested in Buddhist teachings. He developed mindfulness around keeping the essential qualities of Buddhism, but without the beliefs. You could say it is Buddhism without the belief. Its a contemporary re-contextualization of ancient wisdom and tradition. This meant that if you were a Catholic priest, you could benefit from mindfulness; it didnt conflict with your own set of beliefs. This was a subtle, but very important shift.

A: Mindfulness enables you to be more compassionate, more present, less reactive. Its meditation made more accessible.

Kabat-Zinn first offered it in a contemporary tertiary teaching hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. He saw it could be a benefit for so many those suffering from chronic pain syndrome, the people who fall through the cracks. He told colleagues to send them to him. Kabat-Zinn taught these patients how to turn inward, to find a new way of being in pain. From there, his work expanded into other chronic disorders.

Medicine doesnt want to go there. I saw that, but for me, there is a desire to bring it back to my life. For me, it is not so much about mindfulness, but more heartfulness.

A: I went to the US and started training in that approach. While I had learned the TM technique, Jon Kabat-Zinn helped to orientate me to what meditation truly is.

What are you going to do when you finish meditation? When you finish meditating, can you make the next moment valuable, engaged, connected, awake, with a quality of curiosity, interested in your own experience? Its valuable to meditate, but the application is deeper than sitting and closing your eyes. Dedicate time to understanding your own mind. Its a willingness to explore and be interested in your own experience.

You dedicate time to silence, to understand your own mind better. Then I also need to get up and go to the world, be present in the world. Its always available to us. Awareness isnt going anywhere. Awareness is now, attending to each and every moment of our lives. Then life becomes meditation.

If you do take time to be with yourself, understand your relationship between body and mind, then life becomes a meditation. Its a radical shift in understanding, broadly and universally applicable. . Mindfulness isnt about thought; its prior to thought. Train yourself to be aware of the thought prior to its occurring.

A: Yes, agreed. We get lost in thinking. We lose a wider presence with our body. Most of us are lost in thinking the revered space between our left and right ear. And we lose our consciousness of Earth and others. You have to start with mindfulness of the body, then mindfulness of thoughts. And it becomes a trainable skill, an actual physiological skill transforming our own awareness. Not randomly, but in service of the greater good, to reduce our own suffering, then the suffering of others. In order to experience a more meaningful existence and live life, we have to train our minds.

When you train for the Two Oceans, you train your body extensively. You cant run a marathon if you havent trained physically. People think the mind is easier. Its not. Youre asking people to open up and be uncomfortable. Gym is not comfortable; gym can be hard. Its the same as training for consciousness. It isnt easy, but it is simple.

Mindfulness is about focusing on the present, not worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.

I treat mindfulness daily in my practice, and I teach an eight-week program on mindfulness. We are training professionals in mindfulness at the Faculty of Medicine at Stellenbosch University. Its much broader than doctors. We train the trainers through the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. This is the only university in South Africa that offers this course. I also contribute towards IMEISA, a non-profit around mindfulness, to create more awareness and debunk myths around mindfulness.

Everyone can benefit from mindfulness. However, the only way you will know the benefit is if you practice. It will be in your own experience. However, for me, I saw my own changes: reduced reactivity and stronger connection with myself and others, as well as everything around me. Its the human condition to be lost in thought. We cant connect if were not present. Something happens when we dont make our mind the enemy. Be more engaged in the moment. Its not an idea; its a truth.

The world faces an unprecedented global health crisis. As governments race to protect the health and well-being of their citizens, businesses must find innovative ways to serve clients and customers. Although countless employees in a wide range of industries have been asked to work remotely to prevent further spread of the new coronavirus, these businesses must continue producing. For many, this represents a unique opportunity to improve and modernize their practices.

Much-needed changes that organizations have been meaning to get to will now become paramount. Manual management of an environment by group participation works when the group is together in a common area, but when the group is dispersed, the tasks become exponentially riskier and more challenging. That means the need for automation is now. Businesses that embrace automation will realize its full benefits, while laggards will suffer from risk and inefficiency in our increasingly complex business world.

Automation has become essential to countless business processes, from manufacturing to fielding customer service calls. But many areas of business are still ripe for automation, particularly in IT. In the new work-from-home reality, IT departments must enable secure remote access for dispersed workforces. Automating important website security processes enables IT personnel to focus on other business-critical tasks while preventing costly lapses in protection. Automation solutions are usable by employees with limited technical skills. Manual processes, in contrast, often are built by experts who provide little by way of documentation or training materials. Workforce Disruptions Can Generate Security Lapses

Digital certificates are a critical aspect of website and device security, and we have already seen an earlier example of how a workforce disruption can affect them. The U.S. federal government shutdown of 2018-19 furloughed hundreds of thousands of government employees, including IT personnel who were unable to conduct routine operations such as issuing and renewing expiring certificates. As a result, many government services and websites went offline during the 35-day shutdown, including more than130 online services and applications in a single week. Affected websites ranged from the U.S. Court of Appeals to NASAs rocket testing website.

Manual certificate maintenance requires careful management. For instance, browsers will only trust a website certificate for a certain term length (at present two years, but soon dropping to one). That means more certificates will require renewal, or browsers will no longer trust the site. If IT departments are unable to track upcoming certificate expirations for timely renewal, they risk their sites being flagged as untrustworthy and critical systems going offline. In fact, many high-visibility service outages for major digital systems stem from certificate management errors. December 2018sday-long service outagefor 32 million O2 customers is a perfect example.

Todays global workforce disruption dwarfs the 2018 government shutdown in scale and longevity. Thurman Thomas was nearly the choice here, but it is impossible to overlook Strahan's credentials. He made seven Pro Bowl appearances and was named a first-team All-Pro four times. The Texas native led New York to one Super Bowl victory during his decorated career.

Drafted team: Jets

Gastineau played 10 seasons during which he made five Pro Bowl appearances. He was named a first-team All-Pro three times and accumulated 74 sacks over the course of his career. Andre Tippett and Ken Norton Jr. are a few other players that would have been considered here.

Drafted team: Patriots

Aaron Hernandez and Gronkowski formed one of the most devastating tight end duos in league history. Gronk played nine seasons before retiring, then announcing his return this offseason. If Gronkowski is able to stay healthy and produce similar numbers, he will have a chance to cement his status the greatest tight end in league history. The Arizona product has five Pro Bowl appearances and four first-team All-Pro selections to his name.

Drafted team: Michigan

Dierdorf made six Pro Bowl appearances and was named first-team All-Pro three times. The Pro Football Hall of Fame eventually opened their doors for the productive lineman, who has enjoyed a long career as a broadcaster after his playing days, including 15 years for the NFL on CBS.

Drafted team: Steelers

Dawson is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He made seven Pro Bowl appearances and was named a first-team All-Pro six times for the Steelers.

Drafted team: 49ers

Watters made five Pro Bowl appearances. He accumulated 10,643 rushing yards and 4,248 receiving yards during his career. He started all but two games in which he played, which is pretty remarkable.

Drafted team: Steelers

Pittsburgh seems to be really well-represented on this list. Larry Allen was a tantalizing option as well at No. 46. Both he and Lambert were selected first-team All-Pro six times and are in the Hall of Fame. Lambert gets the slight edge for us with this pick, however, with his four Super Bowl titles as well as hardware for winning the 1974 Defensive Rookie of the Year and 1976 Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Drafted team: Seahawks

Wagner is one of a handful of active players on this list. He remains one of the most effective linebackers across the league. He has been selected to six Pro Bowls and is a five-time first-team All-Pro. Wagner will only continue to distance himself from the competition. The California native was a member of the Super Bowl XLVIII championship team.

Drafted team: Raiders

Long's contribution to the game continued beyond his own playing career in the form of his sons, Chris and Kyle Long. The elder rusher made eight Pro Bowl appearances and was twice selected first-team All-Pro. He accumulated 84 sacks over the course of his career.

Drafted team: 49ers

The 49ers are another well-represented team on this list. It's fitting that San Francisco makes our list at No. 49 overall. Craig made four Pro Bowl appearances and was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 1988. The NFC franchise won three Super Bowls with the running back on their roster.
