Nursing homes get creative to connect residents with families – Wooster Daily Record

West View Healthy Living delivered plenty of smiles to its residents earlier this month when it hosted the first drive-up visits for families to see their loved ones since the state banned visitors from long-term care facilities.

Drive-up visits, the idea of West Views Life Enrichment Director Debbie Williams, allows families to see their loved ones in person. Residents sit outside the main door and their families drive up for 15-minute visits while practicing social distancing.

Nursing homes across the area are finding new and creative ways to keep their residents connected to family during the coronavirus pandemic. Other facilities are offering window visits, connecting residents through Facetime and Zoom calls, and providing regular updates on their Facebook pages.

"Its been hard. Residents are isolated from families. Isolated from their friends. Theyve been hit twice," said Mindy Scurlock, director of housing at Brethren Care Village in Ashland.

COVID-19 also has hit long-term care facilities especially hard. The number of cases in these facilities makes up at least 21% of the states cases, and deaths from the facilities account for at least 41% of the states total.

As of May 13, the Ohio Department of Health was reporting 35 of Wayne Countys 48 total deaths were from COVID-19 cases in the countys long-term care facilities. Holmes County had its only reported death from a nursing home. Ashland County had no reported deaths.

In Wayne County, 84 total cases of COVID-19 were reported inlong-term care facilities since April 15. All of the cases are at Smithville Western Care Center 60 cases among residents, and 24 cases among the staff.Since the state began counting cases in March, Wayne has tallied 202 cases overall.

Ashland and Holmes have reported no cases in nursing homes since April 15. On Monday, the state reported 15 cumulative cases in Ashland and 13 cases in Holmes.

Rhonda Geer of Ashland was used to regular visits with her parents Ron and Beverly Bolton at Belmont Towers, the assisted living facility at Brethren Care. She would chat with them in their room, enjoy lunch together, and give them lots of hugs. The family must now speak through a window, Geer on one side, her parents on the other no hugs allowed.

"I have a very close relationship with my parents so its been difficult," Geer said.

She credited the staff at Brethren Care for making it a little easier during the lockdown. They have helped complete tasks she would usually handle such as her parents laundry, sorting their medication, and taking them to doctors appointments.

"All the things I would do, theyre doing," Geer said. "They go the extra mile to help our families then go home to help their own families."

Thinking outside the box

Steve Miller of Wooster also appreciates the assistance provided by the staff at the Wayne County Care Center, which helps to facilitate Facetime calls with his father William "Bill" Miller. His father previously suffered hallucinations revolving around windows, a side effect of his Parkinsons disease, and Steve Miller felt it best to avoid window-side visits.

The county care center recently applied for a grant through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to purchase more iPads and Bluetooth devices so more residents can communicate with their families throughout the day. The federal agency is making funds available to provide communication technology to nursing home facilities and not requiring repayment.

Another way nursing homes are keeping families updated is on Facebook, sharing photos and videos of their loved ones enjoying activities still occurring inside the facility.

Altercare Majora Lane in Millersburg recently hosted Mohawk Valley Farm, which brought "fun and funny" alpacas to visit each resident at the window, according to Kayla Maurer, a spokeswoman for Altercare Integrated Health Services. The nursing home also had drive-up visits for families to celebrate Mothers Day.

"Our teams continue to think outside of the box for resident activities to keep them engaged and entertained. We understand how challenging these times can be and for that our team is taking special care and thought into making sure opportunities for engagement are creative and plentiful," Maurer said.

The Good Shepherd Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation in Ashland, operated by Lutheran Social Services, asked the community for cards and letters to lift the spirits of its residents. Each resident has received at least three letters, coloring pages, or cards from strangers, and the facility tries to respond to as many as it can.

"I can see pen pals in the future," said Terry McQuillen, director of life enrichment and volunteer coordinator at LSS The Good Shepherd.

The Good Shepherd, West View, and Brethren Care have faith services and other entertainment streaming directly to televisions in residents rooms. The Wayne County Care Center keeps its residents entertained with themed days, providing special meals and treats, and the staff dresses to correspond with the theme.

Getting professional help is not a sign of weakness. In fact, it is a sign of strength, Dr. Jim Polo, the Behavioral Health Medical Director with Regence, says. It means you have identified a problem and that youre willing to get help to make it better.

May is Mental Health Month so we wanted to talk about access to mental health providers and the differences in treatment.

Dr. Polo says finding help can be a tall task for some.

Once you make that decision it can be overwhelming. It can be a daunting experience. There are two things you have to think about. What kind of support do you need, and then how do you find that support?

There are different types of behavioral health providers. Counselors and therapists are those providers that Dr. Polo says can help you with problems that are generally new or current and will likely meet with you on a weekly basis, many of them are seeing people virtually.

They will help you with how you are thinking and feeling about a situation and also maybe sometimes with some of your behavior in relationship to that situation.

For more complex issues, Dr. Polo says you may seek out a psychologist. A psychologist can do the same things as a counselor or therapist but psychologists are going to dig a little deeper. In addition to how you are feeling about the situation, they are likely going to help you with how you feel about yourself.

Dr. Polo says some people might need to take it a step further and see a psychiatrist.

Now that you know what kind of support you need, next is figuring out where to go, and a lot of us know that can be a daunting task.

I would recommend that you first consider talking with family and friends," Dr. Polo says. "For one, you will realize many other folks are struggling and have already reached out to get help. And theres nothing better than getting a recommendation from somebody who is already a trusted counselor.

Dr. Polo says you can also talk with your primary care doctor as they often know who is available. Your health plan can also give you resources that are available in your area.

Getting professional help with a behavioral health provider is a little bit like dating. It doesnt always work out the first time. It is all about that fit. Certainly you want to make sure that the person has the experience and skills to handle your particular problem, but you want to feel comfortable with this person. You want to feel like you can trust them with some of your personal details.

Government attacked for ignoring expert advice on nutrition in food parcels – The Guardian

The government has been accused of a shocking disregard for the basic nutrition of the most vulnerable members of society during the pandemic by a group of leading food policy academics.

A letter written by Tim Lang, professor of food policy at Londons City University, was sent early in the Covid-19 crisis to George Eustice, secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, and Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England.

It called for the creation of an expert committee on food and nutrition to oversee the contents of food packages sent to 1.5 million people required to shield during the pandemicand to the 1.3 million children eligible for free school meals. The letter was co-signed by Erik Millstone, emeritus professor of science policy at the University of Sussex, and Terry Marsden of Cardiff University. They proposed a committee that would mirror the work of Sage, the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, which has informed government policy throughout the crisis.

In its response Defra said that PHE is responsible for the health of the public and the effect of nutrition on our immune system. In turn, PHE replied that the matters raised were for ministers. In effect, neither arm of government believes itself responsible for overseeing nutrition.

Lang described the response as shocking. It shows a troubling failure to put nutrition right at the heart of policy. Its stupid and shows a poor understanding of how inequalities get accentuated in a crisis, he said.

Many of those receiving the free food packages, provided by food service companies Brakes and Bidfood, noted that while they contained fresh fruit and vegetables, they were heavy on simple carbohydrates and low in protein. As schools closed and children eligible for free school meals were given food service company parcels, concerns were also raised about their contents.

Peter Overton, a primary school head teacher in Bristol, posted a picture of one to Twitter, describing it as shameful. The bulk of it was crisps, chocolate biscuits, a loaf of cheap bread, and a block of fat marked for cooking only.

Earlier this month Northumbria Universitys Healthy Living Lab reported a massive decrease in fruit and vegetable intake among pupils eligible for free school meals. Just over half of the children studied said they had eaten no fruit or vegetables in a three-day period after the introduction of lockdown.

Funding for free school meals is now through a weekly 15 voucher per child, which can be spent at nominated retailers. Last week a campaign by Manchester United and England footballer Marcus Rashford forced the government to extend the policy over the summer holiday. While this U-turn was welcomed by child poverty campaigners, there is mounting concern about the nutritional value of the food being eaten by the poorest families.

There has been a real danger that without some sort of oversight we lose focus on basic nutrition, said Naomi Duncan, chief executive of Chefs in Schools, a charity working to improve school meals, which is supporting 850 families during the crisis. The voucher scheme is a financial solution, not a nutritional solution. Theres been a 30-year struggle to get better nutrition at the heart of school food provision and there is a risk of that being lost, she said.

In its response to Lang, Defra argued that leading supermarkets are working to ensure people have the food and products they need. Lang describes this as the key to the problem. Its the leave-it-to-Tesco approach, he said. It shows the weakness of Public Health England.

In a statement PHE said that any decisions about establishing an advisory committee on nutrition would be for ministers to take. Defra declined to comment.

There is a big trend at the moment for the vegan diet. The number of people choosing a vegan lifestyle has increased significantly over the last few years.

Some are doing it with animal welfare and our planet in mind as a vegan diet is less of a drain on the environment compared to a meat and dairy diet.

Others are doing it for the health benefits which are numerous. A vegan diet has been shown to be helpful for some health conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, and a meat free diet may help to lower your cholesterol and blood pressure.

This may be because Vegan diets tend to include a lot more fruit and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and minerals and high in fibre.

Eating more fruit and vegetables can decrease the risk of diseases such as bowel cancer. Vegans also tend to eat more wholegrains, soy and nuts, all of which can help to protect your heart.

Of course with any strict diet or lifestyle change comes disadvantages and the vegan diet is no different.

One of the common problems seen with a vegan diet, especially those who are doing it for environmental and animal welfare reasons and not for the benefits to their health, is they become reliant on highly processed vegan products.

Going vegan doesnt automatically mean you have a healthy diet. You could be a vegan and still have chips, biscuits, sweets and alcohol every day. Its important to remember that there is a vegan alternative out there for every junk food!

So lets take a closer look at things to be mindful of on a vegan diet.

* Some people who go on a vegan diet become over reliant on processed food. They replace milk, cheese and meat with foods manufactured to look and taste as though they are the real thing. In order for food manufactures to replicate the taste and texture of these animal products, they use non-foodstuff, including stabilisers, gums, thickeners and highly processed protein extracts.

Moreover, you may be counting your vegan cheese in as a source of protein, when many of them are actually made from carbs.

* Vegan diets do not provide the fat soluble vitamins A & D.

Although you may be led to believe you get vitamin A from carrots, you dont. What you do get from carrots is the precursor to vitamin A, which is beta carotene, and yes although you can convert beta carotene into vitamin A this conversion is quite insignificant.

It would take a massive amount of carotene to convert to equal amounts of vitamin A. And this conversion wont happen at all if you have impaired digestion, low thyroid function or a lack of health fats in this diet.

Remember vitamin A & D are fat soluble vitamins so they wont be absorbed if the diet is low in healthy fats.

* It has been shown that vegans are often low in B12 which comes primarily from animal foods.

Contrary to popular belief, theres no reliable plant source of vitamin B12. You need to pay attention to this nutrient, as it helps to keep your blood and nerve cells healthy. It also protects your all-important DNA.

Low B12 can also lead to raised levels of the amino acid homocysteine. Raised levels of homocysteine have been shown to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and dementia. If you are planning to start a vegan diet or already on one, you may benefit from taking a high-quality B-12 supplement.

* Along with iron, vitamin D, vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids, calcium is another nutrient thats likely to be low on an exclusively vegan diet.

This essential mineral not only maintains strong bones and teeth, but it also contributes to normal metabolism. Luckily there are some excellent plant sources of calcium such as, broccoli, kale, rocket, soybeans, chickpeas, beans and fortified non-dairy milks to name a few.

* Protein sources are plentiful in a vegan diet and can be got through nuts, seeds, grains, lentils and soybeans, however it is important to remember that plant protein is not a complete protein as no one source contains all the essential amino acids. However with careful meal planning you can overcome this by combining different sources to make a complete protein, for example combining rice and beans will give you all the essential amino acids.

* Like protein, there are plentiful sources of iron in a vegan diet. However plant sources of iron are not as well absorbed as it is from animal sources, which is the most bioavailable form of iron.

The same can be said for Zinc which, although plentiful in the vegan diet bioavailability, is reduced.

As with any diet, variety and food choices are important. The vegan diet has many health benefits but it is also possible to have a very unhealthy vegan diet if you choose to swap animal products for highly processed alternatives, which lets face it arent actually food but products made in a factory!

If it came from a plant, eat it;

If it was made in a plant, dont.

Healthy Living: Suicide prevention is of increased importance in these stressful times – Norwich Bulletin

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that in 2018, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. On average, 132 people died by suicide every day that same year.

As we all know, we are living in unprecedented times. Among the lack of clarity the current situation brings, the impact on nationwide suicide statistics is also clouded. People are juggling increased responsibilities, financial despair and isolation from loved ones and friends.

Fortunately, we know how these factors can impact us mentally and can take action. Many of us are left feeling anxious, overwhelmed, lonely, and desperate for everyday life to return to "normal." People with existing mental health conditions may experience an increase in symptoms while others may be feeling mental health symptoms for the first time.

Those who are experiencing extreme distress will benefit from engagement in mental health treatment; trained mental health professionals can promote the healing needed from the scars of the pandemic.

If you find yourself struggling with the pandemic response but arent ready to contact a professional for help, there are many options you can use to support yourself and your loved ones. Mobile Crisis services can be accessed by calling 211, pressing 1 to indicate a crisis, and pressing 1 again. If a person is potentially in imminent danger, call 911.

While these may be unprecedented times, we are all in this together and by finding ways to connect, we will surely find our "new normal."

Covid-19 should be a wakeup call to focus on healthy lifestyle changes, reducingthe risks associated with any new waves of the virus or future pandemics, writes the University of Otago's Dr Margot Skinner

Globally more than 500,000 have died as a result of Covid-19. We know that people living with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and cancer are at higher risk of severe Covid-19-related illness and death.

In fact over 90 percent of peoplewho contract and die from Covid-19also have at least one NCD.

These sorts of statistics should be a wakeup call to all of us to focus on healthy lifestyle changes and reduce the risks associated with any new waves of the virus or future pandemics.

Much of the emphasis to date has been centred around bed shortages in intensive care unitsand lack of ventilators and personal protective equipment. Whilethese are important, it is just as important to understand that survivors of severe Covid-19-related illness have a long road to recovery, often over months, and may not ever get back to full health.

Physiotherapists have a key role in managing the survivors rehabilitation.

The severity of the acute inflammatory response leads to critical illness complications, so time spentby those patients in the ICU can be drawn out.

Physiotherapists work with these patients in the ICU to counter the negative effects of lying in bed and to reduce respiratory complications as well as to restore function.

Once the patient is able to be moved into the ward, intensive input by the health team continues. Physiotherapists focus on maximising long-term functional outcomes such as walking and preparing the patient for ongoing therapy once they are ready to transfer home or to a rehabilitation facility.

Patients and their families are encouraged to set goals to achieve as rehabilitation continues e.g. By tomorrow, walk to the bathroom using a frame and only one helper.

To get a sense of perspective around goal-setting and recovery, the physiotherapist will also spend time educating the patient about how the body functions and realistic timeframes in which to achieve the goals.

Lifestyle education such as not smoking, and aiming for a healthy weight is also included as part of the management.

Lifestyle management is fundamental to the care continuum for the patient with Covid-19. But we could do better, by focusing on healthy lifestyle behaviours in the general population of all ages and by addressing NCD risk factors.

During Levels 3 and 4 of the pandemic, prevention and treatment services for NCDs in New Zealand were severely disrupted -a disruption that's still ongoing in many parts of the world.

A survey from the World Health Organization showed that more than 50 percent of services for high blood pressure are partially or completely disrupted.

Rehabilitation services have been disrupted in almost two-thirds of countries, even though rehabilitation is key to a healthy recovery following severe illness from Covid-19.

There is an unparalleled opportunity for physiotherapists and other health professional colleagues to be supported by stakeholders including legislators and the Ministry of Health, to lead the campaign to reduce NCDs through a population-wide public health initiative Living a healthy lifestyle through exercise campaign.

In this way we could do better and reduce the risk for New Zealanders of Covid-19-related deaths

Green adds that this is a team effort. He said trying to look at it as cool that we are using this kind of technology might help those who are hesitant to get on board with the new safety measures we are seeing.
