Genetic engineering: It’s a technology, not an ideology

Not as simple as 'for' or 'against'

Whether you are pro or anti genetic engineering has become a divisive political issue, but remember that we are talking about technology; it shouldnt be an ideology.

Last week, BASF said it would stop seeking European regulatory approval for three genetically modified (GM) potato varieties, citing uncertainty in the regulatory environment. After a decade of research, its going elsewhere.

It was a decision welcomed by anti-GM campaigners. Jubilation exploded on various internet forums. But I think its a sad indictment of the scientific climate in Europe, when a company thats invested millions to produce potatoes that are resistant to late blight a major potato crop disease is driven out of Europe because regulators cant decide what to do about divisions in public and political opinion.

In the balance

Genetic engineering shouldnt be a political issue, no matter how much sci-fi-sensitive individuals might be reminded of the plot from The Day of the Triffids. Plants can be engineered in many ways, and their potential benefits should be balanced with an assessment of their potential detriments no matter what the technology.

Meanwhile, new GM crops are carefully considered by safety assessors around the world, including by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which, if youve been paying attention to its work on health claims, has an excellent record of telling the industry to go back to the drawing board if the science isnt solid enough.

From my perspective, the reaction from many people on internet forums underlines the need for better science education, not necessarily around genetic engineering, but in order to be better critical consumers of scientific knowledge. In other words, dont believe everything youre told.

Sarai Sierra’s Young Sons Don’t Know Mom Isn’t Coming Home – Video

Sarai Sierra #39;s Young Sons Don #39;t Know Mom Isn #39;t Coming Home
The two young sons of slain New York mom Sarai Sierra are under the impression that their father has gone to Turkey to bring their mother home - alive. Sierra, whose battered body was found near a highway in Istanbul over the weekend, was the mother of two boys aged 9 and 11. Steven Sierra, who went to Istanbul in search of his wife after she disappeared nearly two weeks ago, told his children that he was going to Turkey to bring their mom home. "The father will be speaking to them and it #39;s something that #39;s going to be hard and he #39;s going to be talking to them when he comes back," Betsy Jimenez, the mother of Sarai Sierra, said today during a family news conference. State Representative Michael Grimm said Steven Sierra #39;s biggest concern is telling his children that mom #39;s not coming home. "It #39;s going to be the hardest thing he #39;s ever going to have to do in his life," said Grimm, who added that the Staten Island family isn #39;t sure when Steven Sierra will be able to bring home his wife #39;s body. An autopsy was completed Sunday on Sarai Sierra, 33, but results aren #39;t expected for three months. Turkish officials however said she was killed by at least one fatal blow to her head. A casket holding the Staten Island mother was carried through alleyways lined with spice and food stalls to a church, where the casket remained on Monday. Turkish police hope DNA samples from 21 people being questioned in the case will be key to finding the perpetrators, the Associated Press reported ...

New Scary Skyrim Monster (Dragonborn DLC) – Video

New Scary Skyrim Monster (Dragonborn DLC)
You should of heard my reaction when this first came out of the water :PI had to record it right away, it scared the hell out of me. Small spoiler: These are normally in quests to do with the "Black Book". Along with other weird demonic creatures that float (I forger their names), but none of these are scary anymore, just my initial reaction when I first saw this. It was great. Kinda looks like a chorous (or whatever those bugs are) had a baby with a giant and then merged DNA with a slaughterfish or something. Then someone put the depths of Hell inside of it which it spits out as a weapon.
