Mike Schmidt – ECMO Patient – Penn State Hershey Medical Center – Video

Mike Schmidt and his father, Gene, share their experience when Mike had the flu in February, 2011, and was flown to Penn State Hershey to be put on Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. EMCO therapy removes poorly oxygenated blood from the patient, externally oxygenates it through the ECMO circuit, and then returns it to the patient

Dr. Jeffrey Myers Explains Genetic Variations in Head and Neck Cancer – Video

bit.ly The first comprehensive studies of genetic variation in head and neck squamous cell cancers have uncovered mutations that may help refine treatment for patients with the disease, according to researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The two multi-institutional studies, both published online on the Science Express feature of the journal Science, found: • Mutations that affect an unexpected tumor-suppressing role of the NOTCH1 gene; • Infrequent but significant mutations in four suspected cancer-causing genes; and • Frequent mutation of the tumor-suppressing gene p53, which previously was known to be damaged or impaired in head and neck cancer.

The Emerging Network of Data for Understanding the Interactions of Genes and Drugs – Video

Air date: Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 3:00:00 PM Timedisplayed is Eastern Time, Washington DC Local Category: Wednesday Afternoon Lectures Description: The last two decades have provided a flood of data relevant to drug action--from both basic science and clinical sources. These data provide molecular, cellular, tissue, organism and population-level information about how drugs work to create both efficacy and adverse events. Any single data source is imperfect, but integration of these sources can yield remarkable and practical discoveries as well as opportunities for application.

Pt2: Do you understand the new genetics? Maybe you don’t have that gene! – Andrew Shelling – Video

Part 2 of 2 Assoc Prof Andrew Shelling from The University of Auckland discusses the 'new genetics' at Cafe Scientifique, hosted by the Auckland Museum Institute, on Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 See part 1 here: http://www.youtube.com There seems to be a "gene" for something being identified on a daily basis, whether it is for breast cancer, inherited cardiac disease, ADHD, obesity, sexual orientation, yo-yo diet, IQ, sporting ability, infidelity, death, etc., etc. There will be a little bit about the science used to find these genes and the $1000 genome, but the focus of this discussion will be on what this "new genetics" means for disease and lifestyle, what the risks really mean, do we need a "personal gene coach" and how the information should be delivered. Andrew is head of the Medical Genetics Research Group, which is primarily interested in understanding the molecular changes that occur during the development of genetic disorders, focusing on breast and ovarian cancer.

Alien Genetic Takeover of Humanity! – Video

How the global takeover might as well be coming from a hostile alien species-- as depicted in John Carpenter's 1982 film 'The Thing'. In fact, such an invader would be hard pressed to wreak more destruction upon the earth's biosphere. In the film, and its other versions from 1951 and 2011, an uncovered species takes over its host's DNA while outwardly imitating it, threatening to infect the entire planet in a short span

Science Talk: Vaccine Made With Synthetic Gene Protects Against Deadly Pneumonia – Video

http://www.einstein.yu.edu - February 22, 2011 -- Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, led by Liise-anne Pirofski, MD, have developed an experimental vaccine that appears to protect against an increasingly common and particularly deadly form of pneumococcal pneumonia, which infects 175000 Americans a year.

Functional Repair of Human Donor Lung by IL-10 Gene Therapy (EX VIVO Lung) – Video

For the first time, scientists in the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University Health Network have successfully used gene therapy to repair injured human donor lungs, making them potentially suitable for transplantation into patients. This technique could significantly expand the number of donor lungs by using organs that are currently discarded, and improve outcomes after transplantation.
