After Pilot Period, Top Ten Ranked Automotive Service Department Endorses ECO ULTRA® Motor Oil

WICHITA, Kan., May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Universal Lubricants -- a provider of premier motor oils that takes used oil as feedstock to produce re-refined base oil --announced today that its ECO ULTRA sales are up 40 percent at the Nation's sixth largest Subaru service department, Flatirons of Boulder, CO. Flatirons Subaru, along with a second family-owned operation, Flatirons Hyundai, has begun offering -- and encouraging -- the use of motor oils which are re-refined to offer outstanding quality.

ECO ULTRA is a performance-driven and American Petroleum Institute (API) licensed line of motor oils and coolants that takes used oil as feedstock to produce re-refined base oil. It meets all Original Equipment Manufacturers' (OEM) specifications and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) requirements. And now, ECO ULTRA is the motor oil of choice for Flatirons technicians. It's also the preferred product for an increasing number of Flatirons customers, too.

"We perform approximately 18,000 motor oil changes in a given year between our dealerships," said Michael Boudrieau, Flatirons Managing Partner. "We need to be both efficient and effective in our services to meet such demand, and entirely confident in the products we recommend to our customers. Our staff and our clients can't say enough good things about ECO ULTRA. It takes care of automotive engines as well as, or even better than, anything else on the market. We brought ECO ULTRA to a second dealership for that reason, and when customers ask for a trusted recommendation, we tell them the story of motor oils using re-refined base oil. We tell them that bottom-line, we pick ECO ULTRA for our own cars and trucks."

The U.S. produces approximately 1.1 billion gallons of used motor oil every year, of which approximately 880 million gallons is collected for re-use. However, less than 20 percent of what is collected is re-refined. Rather, most is burned as an industrial fuel, reducing supplies of limited petroleum reserves and perpetuating the need to import foreign oil. What's more, an estimated 220 million gallons of used motor oil is not collected, but instead, disposed of improperly, damaging the environment. Universal Lubricants is dedicated to reversing this trend with its Closed Loop Process by completely controlling every aspect of the proprietary system. The Company collects, re-refines, blends, packages and redistributes its own oil, the ECO ULTRA linewithout ever losing guardianship within the chainin an infinitely repeatable, sustainable cycle.

ECO ULTRA reduces the need to extract or import two barrels of crude oil with every four-quart motor oil change. The process of re-refining used oil requires up to 89 percent less energy and reduces the release of harmful greenhouse gases by a margin of up to 65 percent.

"Flatirons receives a fair amount of attention because it's one of the top ten largest auto service centers in America," said John Wesley, chief executive officer of Universal Lubricants. "But let's not forget they're also a family owned and operated business, and have been for 25 years. The secret to their success? Applying tried and true values like a commitment to quality, to putting the customer's interests first, to being conscientious stewards to the auto industry. Flatirons' endorsement of ECO ULTRA speaks volumes about the quality and reliability of the product line. "

Scotland's wind turbines less eco-friendly than they appear

Wind turbines in Nether Monynut, Scotland. Scotland plans to use all renewable energy by 2020. (Photo by Flickr user cowrin.)

Scotland plans to harness it's high wind concentration as a renewable energy source with wind turbines. Wind turbines have often been criticized as ugly and loud, but now they're being called potentially harmful to the environment. That's because wind turbines have been releasing carbon stored in peat bogs into Scotland's atmosphere.

Scotland, the windiest place in Europe, plans to harness its wind power and rely on only renewable energy by 2020, a plan that's drawn criticism from Donald Trump.

The turbines, however, do more damage than simply disrupting Trump's golf game. Many are concerned with building wind turbines on peat bogs because the bogs contain massive amounts of CO2, and the turbines release carbon from the bogs into the atmosphere. They may even release more carbon than they save.

Dave Gilvear, professor and River Science expert at Stirling University, pointed out the distinction between renewable energy and going green.

"I think most people understand what renewable energy is," Gilvear said. "Its getting power from the sun. Its getting power from water. Its getting power from the wind. But that doesnt necessarily mean that its green, in that the construction of a wind farm, the construction of a hydropower station, is going to have an environmental impact, so if you put a dam across a river, for example, and you dont have a fish pass built into it, its going to stop the migration of fish. And thats an environmental impact."

Gilvear was one of the first to discover the environmental impact of wind turbines built on peatland. He said four or five years ago, his team monitored dissolved organic carbon in streams near the turbines and found a higher concentration of carbon in the water than in streams near peatlands without it. He noted, however, that turbine planning has improved since his discovery.

"Weve also been monitoring another wind farm down in Ayrshire. Were not finding the same results there, in that best practice methods of construction are being adhered to. The Brazer Dune site is now seen as sort of poor practice, and hopefully those sorts of construction wont be happening again," Gilvear said.

As a response to this, the Scottish government launched a carbon payback calculator, an estimator of how much time it would take for wind turbines to save more carbon than it cost to build them.

"The initial estimates that this group came up with, I think, were kind of between 3 and 30 years," Simon Drew, biologist at Stirling University said. "Now the operational lifetime of a wind farm is about 25 years, so, potentially, although you have a sort of non-fossil fuel energy source, its not carbon neutral if its going to be for that long."

HSBC Malta Foundation renews support for Eco-Schools

The HSBC Malta Foundation renewed its support for the Eco-Schools environmental education programme during a ceremony held at Xrobb l-Gagin Nature Park and Sustainable Development Centre.

Among the various Eco-School initiatives organised this year, 12 Maltese schools won funding through an Eco-Schools competition to implement their in-school environmental projects. Students across the island competed by submitting project proposals of their own design to win project funding from 600 to 1,000, depending on the respective projects requirements.

Eco-Schools proposal competition succeeded on many levels. It engaged students in devising their own environmental projects and now the 12 winning proposals will be implemented with the prize money, said Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino. The implementation of these projects will offer first-rate learning experiences for students while effectively helping their own schools become more environmentally sustainable.

HSBC supports Eco-Schools in Malta and worldwide as part of its commitment to environmental education, said HSBC Maltas CEO Mark Watkinson in his address during the ceremony. The banks involvement in this programme aptly expresses our forward thinking approach towards positive change and more sustainable practices within the community.

One of the remarkable strengths of the Eco-School programme is its ability to integrate environmental initiatives into the educational system while remaining flexible enough to adapt and meet the needs of each school individually, explained Francis Sullivan, HSBCs Advisor on the Environment and Deputy Head of Group Corporate Sustainability.

Eco-Schools, known in Malta as EkoSkola, is an international programme involving nearly 38,000 schools worldwide. By focusing on empowering students through learning experiences, the programme encourages students to become involved in their schools environmental decision-making for sustainable development, said Vincent Attard, Executive President Nature Trust (Malta).

HSBC Group this year granted 33,000 US dollars for this initiative, coordinated in Malta by Nature Trust (Malta), who represent the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) Malta, with support from the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs.

HGTV's eco-home goes lean and green

ATLANTA

There are many reasons to go green, whether building a new home or renovating an existing one. You'll save money when you make your systems function more efficiently, and you'll have a warm glow of satisfaction at saving the planet one solar-water heater at a time.

A beautifully seductive billboard for the merits of green building, the striking house that cable channel HGTV built sits on a hill in the 1,000-acre Chattahoochee Hills, Ga., community of Serenbe, 30 minutes from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

The three-bedroom, 2 -bath home will be awarded to one sweepstakes winner in late June and will be open for public tours through June 24. For chances to enter the sweepstakes, go to http://www.hgtv.com/green-home/index.html.Designed by Atlanta architect Steve Kemp, of Kemp Hall Studio, the HGTV Green Home 2012 is a 21st-century spin on the classic American farmhouse, a combination of nostalgia and forward-thinking green values evident in features such as solar panels to generate electricity.

The HGTV Green Home illustrates a new approach toward green. While in the past, green building might have meant using low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint and Energy Star appliances, the approach to green is becoming much more holistic, encompassing a lifestyle that embraces existing with less space, living in a home longer, and, best-case scenario, locating your home in a green-friendly community.

Tiffany Barcik is an architect with Atlanta's Moon Bros. Architects, which has built three homes at Serenbe. All Serenbe homes are by design "green" because they have to adhere to EarthCraft principles and take advantage of the community's commitment to sustainability.

"It's not just individual houses trying to be green, it's a whole community," Barcik said.

With the economy affecting the way people think of home buying, there have been philosophical shifts that will impact the green movement.

One of the key green features of the HGTV home is its size. "Building smaller is the best green thing to do," Kemp said.

"I would say that the one thing we pushed in this home was challenging how much space we really need," Kemp said. "Having a maximum-efficiency geothermal system and you're still heating and cooling 5,000-6,000 square feet? If you can live the same way in 3,000 or 2,000 square feet, then you have gone way beyond anything you can do with any particular system."

2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco First Test

Please enter your username

I test drove this against the Toyota and was more convinced with the Chevy both inside the cabin/ behind the wheel and outside. This car has very good driving dynamanics and handsome looks.

I'll cut to the chase: over 4600 miles of mixed driving, I have averaged 40.8 mpg (using 93 octane). On one 300 mile road trip (60-75mph), with two adults, a child, and luggage, we averaged 52.5 mpg. The Cruze is the best small car Chevy has ever made. We cross-shopped it against the Accent, Elantra, Civic, Corolla, and Focus. It was the best value at $17,750 out the door (including back-up sensor and power driver's seat). It has more than adequate features (XM, Bluetooth, OnStar, USB, power-everything), decent fit-finish, and rides like the mid-size car it technically is. (Something all you people complaining about its weight need to keep in mind.) One of the pleasant surprises is how the Cruze performs! With a couple of mild modifications (cold air intake and programmer), the Cruze is fun. You can hear the turbo "woosh" when it spools up and "pop" when going off-throttle, the top-end is less asthmatic, and the throttle response is significantly improved. Well done, GM!

|We have many chevys in our family,i drive an awd equinoxlt and my wife has an LTZ Cruze RS.Both have been fantastic vehicles. The cruze has plenty of power both on the highway and around town. its quiet, stylish and confortable. but best of all it works so well. Mt will never give a good review of a gm , but the curze is likely one of the best cars in the class. The focus has awkward styling, a rough transmission and doubious quality.after the cruze i would pick the mazda.

Wish I could have bought this stylish little car when my kids were little...back in the 70s, small cars were cheaply made and poorly equipped. Though a little smaller than the compacts we used to have, it's roomy enough for a family and decent trunk space. Like Chrysler, GM has a strong powertrain warranty. Ford should get one, too.

It all depends on where your priorities are. The Cruze is heavier than many of it's competitors, but it rides better than, st quieter than, and has more airbags than the competition. And with those added features, it still gets excellent mileage.

My favorite thing about the ECO model is that Chevrolet did not skimp on the styling to make it fuel efficient. Yes, the RS package looks great on the Cruze LTs and LTZs, but you can still have chrome wheels on the Eco that are darn good-looking. I hope Chevrolet continues that trend in the future.

I remember when everyone was saying back at the Focus Eco that we need a comparison, and me saying "where there's one test, there's bound to be others." Well, here's another test, and a sure-fire comparison in the horizon.

A 1.8 manual equipped Cruze is not only capable of high real world mpg (I have a friend with a manual Saturn /Opel Astra with the same 1.8 that gets over 30 mpg average), but has far better prospects of long term reliability. 1.4 boosted liters pulling 3000 lbs. of well fed compact is a recipe for a repair nightmare down the road, especially if ANY routine maintenance is neglected and/or the driver doesn't let the turbo cool down after driving it, particularly during the summer months.

Whole Foods: Greenest Cleaners Most Popular

AUSTIN, Texas A year after Whole Foods Market launched its Eco-Scale system, which rates products red, orange, yellow or green based on environmental and sourcing standards, more than 90% of the retailer's household cleaning sales pass its green cleaning test.

Whole Foods sells more than 275 Eco-Scale-rated products from liquid laundry detergents and fabric softeners to all-purpose, glass and toilet bowl cleaners. It requires full disclosure of ingredients on all household cleaning product labels.

To make the cut, products must also meet at minimum Eco-Scales baseline orange standard, which means no intentionally added ingredients with significant environmental or safety concerns like chlorine, phosphates or formaldehyde donors and no synthetic colors or thickeners. Yellow-rated products meet even higher standards, with green-labeled products topping the tier. Red-rated products are not sold at Whole Foods.

We launched Eco-Scale to help shoppers make smarter, greener choices for their families and the planet and provide a way to know exactly what ingredients are in their household cleaning products, said Jim Speirs, global vice president of procurement for Whole Foods Market.

2013 Malibu Eco offers high mpg in a quiet, refined package

Chevrolet's Malibu midsize sedan is a welcoming family car revamped for 2013 with handsome styling, a quieter, refined interior and a pleasant ride.

The Malibu's eAssist electric motor supplements its four-cylinder gasoline engine. Unlike full hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Malibu Eco cannot travel solely on electric power, even for short spurts. Still, the 2013 Malibu Eco earned a fuel economy rating of 25 miles per gallon in city driving and 37 mpg on highways from the federal government.

The ratings compare attractively to the 22/33 mpg rating of the predecessor, 2012 Malibu with a four cylinder and no accompanying electric motor.

The 2013 Malibu Eco is already at dealer showrooms and is being sold alongside 2012 non-Eco Malibus.Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $25,995 for a base 2013 Malibu Eco with front-wheel drive, 182-horsepower, Ecotec, direct gasoline injection, four-cylinder engine mated to a 15-kilowatt electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

Standard features include a six-speed automatic transmission, cloth-covered seats, remote vehicle entry, power windows and door locks, dual-zone climate control, 17-inch wheels, antilock brakes, curtain and knee air bags and electronic stability control. It is the first Malibu to offer an onboard navigation system.

Competitors include the 2012 Hyundai Sonata mid-size sedan which has a 198-horsepower four cylinder, six-speed automatic transmission and a government fuel economy rating of 28/35 mpg. Starting retail price is $21,570.

The 2012 Sonata Hybrid, with 166-horsepower four cylinder mated to an electric motor and lithium polymer battery pack, starts at $26,625 and has a fuel economy rating of 35/40 mpg,

Another Malibu competitor is the 2012 Ford Fusion sedan, which has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $22,495 with 175-horsepower four cylinder, six-speed automatic transmission and a fuel mileage rating of 23/33 mpg. Meanwhile, the 2012 Fusion Hybrid, with 156-horsepower four cylinder mated to an electric motor and nickel metal hydride battery pack, starts at $29,570. The Fusion Hybrid is rated at 41/36 mpg and uses a continuously variable transmission.

The test Malibu Eco impressed with its exterior styling. The Eco model includes some underneath plastic panels and automatic moving "shutters" behind the grille to help smooth airflow and boost fuel economy.

There was some wind noise. But overall, the interior was quieter than in previous Malibus, and road noise was minimized.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco

No Rating 10

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a competent highway cruiser with a good baseline of cabin tech, but its eAssist mild-hybrid system doesn't really deliver the miles per gallon.

7.3

April 24, 2012 | 5:56 PM PDT

The Good: Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system brings Pandora Internet Radio, Stitcher, Bluetooth audio, and USB/iPod connectivity to the dashboard of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco. An optional Pioneer audio system features good power and staging. The standard OnStar connection adds safety and convenience.

The Bad: The Malibu's cabin rattles a bit when the Pioneer audio system gets bassy. Observed fuel economy was disappointing. Acceleration and braking were inconsistent and not confidence-inspiring. Users must choose between navigation and the MyLink system.

The Bottom Line: The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a competent highway cruiser with a good baseline of cabin tech, but its eAssist mild-hybrid system doesn't really deliver the miles per gallon.
