Ferrari's F70, an Eco-Friendly Supercar

Many makers of expensive performance cars have long valued one characteristic most: raw power. But now Ferrari, the preferred drug for many deep-pocketed drivers with a need for speed, is turning to fuel-saving hybrid technology to create its most powerful and expensive model. Using technology developed for Formula One racing, the Italian automakers first hybrid, dubbed the F70, will combine two electric motors with a 12-cylinder gasoline engine to produce more horsepower than any previous Ferrari while cutting fuel consumption by 40percent.

The F70 wont come at a Prius price: The vehicle will probably surpass the 660,000 ($850,000) cost of the automakers storied limited-edition Enzo, which the company considers it a successor to, says a person familiar with Ferraris plans who was not authorized to talk about them. Dedicated Ferrari drivers look first at power and technology, says Fabio Barone, president of the Passione Rossa owners club, who has two Ferraris. The new Enzo will satisfy their appetite.

The model is part of a wave of green supercars as high-end automakers step up efforts to make their models environmentally palatable while maintaining or boosting performance. As more models become available and emission rules tighten, sales of hybrid supercars may surge from fewer than 100 this year to more than 2,100 in 2015, according to IHS Automotive (IHS).

Porsche, which sells hybrid versions of its Cayenne sport-utility vehicle and Panamera four-door coupe, plans to start deliveries next year of the 768,000 918 Spyder. The top-of-the-line Porsche sports car will combine a 500-horsepower engine with two 218-hp electric motors to hit a top speed of more than 320 kilometers (199 miles) per hour. BMW (BMW) will roll out its own i8 plug-in hybrid in 2014. The BMW supercar, similar to one used in the film Mission: ImpossibleGhost Protocol, will be able to drive up to 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) on electric power and accelerate to 100kilometers per hour in less than 5seconds. If you want to sell a vehicle in the U.S. and Europe, you must show you want to make the difference in terms of lower emissions, even if you sell a 100,000 car, says Ian Fletcher, an analyst at IHS Automotive. Even a supercar becomes more usable for city driving if it carries a hybrid engine.

Toyota Motors (TM) Lexus, which has led the green technology shift among luxury-car makers, offers five hybrid models, ranging from the $29,120 CT to the $112,750 LS. Daimlers (DAI) Mercedes-Benz sells the $91,850 S-Class hybrid and introduced a diesel-electric version of the E-Class in Germany this year. Even Volkswagens (VOW) ultraluxe Bentley line is considering a plug-in hybrid version of its planned $201,000 to $252,000 SUV.

The Ferrari hybrid will go on sale next year, with the U.S. likely to be its biggest market, according to the person with knowledge of the cars rollout. Ferrari will produce a limited number of the model, with the final price yet to be decided, the person says.

The original Enzo, which sports wing doors, a carbon-fiber body, and a 660-hp engine, was limited to a run of 400 vehicles between 2002 and 2004. Because of its rarity, it now sells for about $1million, according to website Infomotori.com. The Enzo successor will be powered by HY-KERS hybrid technology developed for the brands Formula One team. In the system, the electric motors deliver about an extra 100 hp to the wheels by operating through one of the gearboxs two clutches. The setup transfers power instantaneously between the 12-cylinder engine and the electric motor, Ferrari says.

That brings some important gains for members of the 1Percent with an eco-bent. A 40percent savings in fuel economy would give elite car drivers some green bragging rights and about an additional 9 miles to the gallon vs. a conventional car of comparable weight. But the green benefits of the propulsion changes arent what has supercar fans excited. Instead, its the prospect that adding those supplementary electric motors will actually allow the cars to go even faster without requiring a larger main engine. Boosted by the electric motors, the new supercar may have more than 900 hp, says Barone, the Ferrari club president. Its going to be a sensational car, and it also lowers emissions.

The bottom line: Ferraris first hybrid vehicle, likely to cost more than $850,000, shows that even elite supercars are under pressure to get greener.

Wave power generator tested in Black Sea storm

// ?> Credit: Eco Wave Power

A medium-sized wave power plant has been successfully tested in storm waters in the Black Sea. The Eco Wave Power (EWP) system, which can generate enough electricity for 10 households from two floaters, was installed to mark international Mother Earth Day in April.

EWP says that once a full commercial scale plant is constructed it will unveil the build and production costs - which will be lower than any other energy generation system.

The Black Sea was chosen is it allowed EWP's wave power generators to be tested in uncontrolled waters.

EWP tested its Wave Clapper and Power Wing floaters and measured the KW output obtained from various wave heights and timescales, even surviving five metre storm waves.

It also examined the influence of side waves, connected the floaters to electric devices and showed an electricity supply, tested how they performed close to each other, united both floaters to one electric grid and charged a common accumulator and tested the storm-protection mechanisms.

The medium-scale power plant will now be tested in different coastal conditions, in order to show that it can operate in different ocean areas.

EWP will the construct its first commercial scale Sea Wave Power Plant, and reveal the exact prices of construction and production, which the company claims will be cheaper than any other renewable or traditional energy generation system.

EWP founder, David Leb, says, "Eco Wave Power is aware of the impact that pollution has on the world. According to a Cornell study, about 40 percent of deaths worldwide are caused by water, air and soil pollution. Such environmental degradation, coupled with the growth in world population, is major causes behind the rapid increase in human diseases.

"Both factors contribute to the malnourishment and disease susceptibility of 3.7 billion people. EWP wants to prove that there is another way for energy generation. The clean way is the right way for the world."

Eco village heating too costly to run – Video

Published Friday, 25 May 2012

Only half of the 400 expected homes were built at the private Woodbrook Housing development after the developer collapsed, but doubts have been raised whether the biomass plant would ever have been financially viable.

Residents are now facing running costs for the wood-chip fuelled heating that are three and a half times those of natural gas.

Sean McErlean, who owns a home in the village expressed his disappointment but said he was happy there was some resolution to the situation.

He said: "It's unfortunate that the resolution now means the end to the eco lifestyle that many people bought into with the district heating system".

On Monday at a meeting householders were given a number of proposed options by the management company.

The options for the energy centre included upgrading the system but it seems more likely the development will be converted to natural gas.

Lagan Valley MLA Basil McCrea supported the residents' search for a solution but said they still have homes to be proud.

"We looked at the figures, the scheme as it was presented is not viable. That says something about this type of installation. The more you get to understand the more you realise that it doesn't really work in this particular environment, so there's an issue with moving forward," he said.

"But we still have houses that are particularly well built and insulated, there's a future in those aspects but as for district heating systems they would need to look hard and long at them."

Eco Wave Power Successfully Installed its First Fully Operational Wave Energy Power Plant

TEL AVIV, Israel, May 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

** Eco Wave Power's Medium-Scale Wave Energy Generation System, is successfully operated in the Black Sea.

Eco Wave Power has successfully installed a medium-scale wave energy power plant, in the Black Sea, during the month of April, 2012. The installation of EWP's system, took place during that month in recognition of the international Mother Earth Day, celebrated in more than 175 countries every year.

A video of the testing is available at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCNz-QW3JYY&feature=youtu.be

The Black Sea providedEco Wave Powerwith real-life conditions necessary for the testing of EWP's wave energy devices under uncontrolled wave heights and wave periods.

Among the different tests, Eco Wave Power has examined the characteristics of 2 different floaters shapes, the "Wave Clapper" and the "Power Wing", and also performed the measuring of the KW output in different wave heights and periods, measuring the influence of side waves on the floaters and the connections, connecting the floaters to electric devices and showing an electricity supply(with and without an accumulator), examining the influence of floaters in proximity to each other, examining the option to unite both floaters to one electric grid and charge a common accumulator, as well as -examining the floaters' storm-protection Mechanisms.

On the 18th and 19th of April the Black Sea has experienced stormy conditions. During which, Eco Wave Power has decided to stress-test its floaters. Consequently, Eco Wave Power had operated its floaters, at a wave height of up to 5 meters. The results were astonishing. Eco Wave Power's floaters had survived the storm, without damages.

In addition, Eco Wave Power had concluded that 2 medium-scale wave energy devices are sufficient for the production of electricity for 6 to 10 households. Now, Imagine what a hundred commercial scale floaters could do.

The next phase of EWP will be to move the medium-scale power plant to a different coastal structure, in order to show our potential clients that EWP's wave energy generation system can be easily connected to almost any ocean structure. After this, EWP will build its first commercial scale Sea Wave Power Plant, and reveal the construction and production prices, this will be cheaper than any other renewable or traditional energy generation system.

David Leb, Founder, stated that "Eco Wave Power is aware of the impact that pollution has on the world. According to a Cornell study, about 40 percent of deaths worldwide are caused by water, air and soil pollution. 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco First Test

Motor Trend testing director Kim Reynolds mentioned the U.S.S. Iowa during a powwow the other day, and it got me thinking. The decommissioned battleship that served in World War II and beyond is being converted into a naval museum after it's towed from Richmond, California, to the Port of Los Angeles. The U.S.S. Iowa and its story rekindled memories of all those war books I read in school.

While I'm fascinated by war, I recognize its terrible reality -- unless we're talking about the 21st century car wars. There's a fierce battle raging in the U.S. midsize segment, an arms race that involves more than 10 legit models. But unlike real war, civilians actually benefit. Chevy is one of several top automakers who have brought in the heavy midsize artillery this year, and it's just fired off its latest round in the form of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco.

Approached in a vacuum, the 2013 Malibu Eco is solid. It may as well be brothers with the Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid. Brothers in the sense that both sedans -- stuffed with unconventional powertrains -- are the base players of their respective lines. The Chevy runs the most recent iteration of the Belt Alternator Starter mild hybrid system christened eAssist. An electric motor rated for 15 horsepower and 79 lb-ft of torque is mounted straight onto the engine, driven off the ancillary belt. On the gas side, a revised 2.4-liter Ecotec inline-four with direct injection pushes 182 hp and 172 lb-ft. In case you were wondering, combined peak production does not magically equate to 197 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. Precise power output depends on when the control electronics decide to phase the electric motor in to directly help the engine.

The eAssist getup works, but it's not always obvious, making us wonder how the average soldier, er, buyer will perceive the technology. The six-speed automatic is geared for fuel economy and uses a tall-for-a-four-cylinder 2.64 axle ratio. It's a mostly silky transmission, though it hesitates when downshifting during moderate to hasty braking. The 2.4-liter is also one of the slowest-revving mills we've flogged in years, as if it's carrying extra flywheel weight. Nevertheless, our Malibu Eco tester cracked off an 8.5-second 0-60 mph run and the quarter mile arrived in 16.6 seconds at 83.8 mph, handing the 140-pound-lighter predecessor (a 2010 Malibu LT -- 9.0 sec, 16.8 at 84.1 mph) its not-as-attractive behind.

Mat the gas pedal on surface streets or the freeway and electric assist may or may not come on, regardless of the air-cooled, 0.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery's state of charge. You may as well guess what accelerator pedal position and speed you'll need to trigger blended gas/electric power. The 15-kW-rated regenerative braking system does top off the battery amply, though. Speaking of braking, the brake pedal is hard and possesses a long stroke, but the depression to braking response relationship is otherwise convincingly linear.

Wind noise suppression is excellent but road noise was worrying -- so much so that it compelled us to do a sound recording. Out on the smoothest stretch of road we could find, the firm-riding Malibu Eco recorded a best of 23.8 sones and 65.8 dBA at a gentle 60-mph cruise. Our present D-segment yardstick/reigning Car of the Year Volkswagen Passat went through the same exercise, returning 20.8 sones and 66.0 dBA. It's unlikely the human ear will pick up 0.2 dBA, but the three-sone difference equals a 14.4-percent increase in loudness going from the five-banger Passat to the Malibu Eco. Low-rolling-resistance tires likely shoulder some of the acoustic fault, but I don't recall the Cruze Eco or Volt suffering nearly as much on marginally narrower rubber (215/55-17 vs. Malibu Eco's 225/55-17). Additionally, associate editor Scott Evans noted an unusual, vacuum-cleaner like battery-cooling fan sound issue during his first drive of the car. In an attempt to replicate, I had web production editor Carol Ngo shuttle me around at irresponsible acceleration rates as I listened for the sound from the back seat, but I could not detect what Evans did.

Overall, there's a good sense of quality in the fit and finish, with the weakest link being the flimsy release on the center console storage box. The large, highly legible buttons and hefty dials on the center stack are fantastic, the hidden cubby behind the screen and blue ambient lighting are neat touches, and the vibrant MyLink interface is incredibly easy to operate. The optional Pioneer nine-speaker sound system is well-tuned and audio playback quality is better than some luxury cars out there.

The interior dimensions grow and shrink from the last generation depending on where you look, but there's no getting around the Malibu Eco's 13.2-cubic-foot trunk, recessed hinges and all. Sans the battery, non-Eco Malibus will have 16.3 cubic feet, putting those versions in the upper echelons of the current midsize cluster.

Our assessment: Chevy's midsizer is almost there. Reynolds wrung the Malibu Eco out on the figure eight in 27.8 seconds at 0.60 average g (0.9 sec quicker than 2010 car) on test day, and then drove it back to the office. Pressed for his analysis, he declared it more suited for the figure eight than the real world -- damning praise for a midsize sedan. But he's right: the overdamped chassis could stand to loosen up, the car wanders a little too much when traveling straight, and can someone get rid of the chromed plastic? As a matter of fact, bring us the impending 197-hp 2.5-liter four and turbocharged 2.0-liter sport model and we'll lock-and-load the Malibu again soon.

Linetec Exclusively Offers Eco-friendly Copper Anodize

Wausau, Wis. - Linetec showcases its proprietary copper anodize finishing to architectural market-leaders at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) national design exposition. This exclusive, eco-friendly finish allows aluminum to present the look of real copper without such shortcomings as salt run-off stains, galvanic corrosion and patina.

Linetec's copper anodize has been specified on a range of architectural aluminum products including windows and curtainwall, column covers, canopies and panel systems. "Architects appreciate this unique finish for a wide range of projects: from eye-catching modern designs to historic restoration projects that will never patina," says Linetec's senior marketing specialist, Tammy Schroeder, LEED Green Associate.

As one of the nation's largest paint and anodize finishers, Linetec launched this technology in 2005. Unlike other finishes, anodizing highlights aluminum's metallic appearance. Because it is an integral part of the substrate, the anodic coating results in a hard, durable substance providing excellent wear and abrasion resistance with minimal maintenance.

Linetec's copper anodize meets or exceeds all AAMA-611 Class I specifications and weathering tests. Class I anodic coating is a high-performance finish used for exterior building structures and other products that must withstand continuous outdoor exposure. Class I anodize is resistant to salt spray and the seacoast, and it is extremely durable in high traffic areas. For nearly 10 years, Linetec's copper anodized material has been on a test fence in south Florida with no significant change to color or gloss.

Copper anodize utilizes Linetec's eco-friendly anodize process, which creates an aesthetically appealing, "frostier" matte finish. This helps hide small defects, such as die lines, flow lines, minor corrosion and scratches that may occur on the aluminum surface of architectural products. As slight imperfections can be common with secondary billet, the finish is well suited for products manufactured with recycled aluminum. Materials with recycled content may assist building projects seeking certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating System(TM).

With respect to LEED criteria for indoor air quality, the anodize process contains no volatile organic compounds (no VOCs). Further supporting environmental and energy-efficient goals, Linetec's eco-friendly anodize process also reduces landfill waste by as much as 80% when compared with traditional etch processes. The process byproducts from the bath are recyclable.

In addition, the improved anodize process has the viscosity of water and will not collect in the small recesses of aluminum extrusions or narrow aluminum tubes, enhancing the durability and lifecycle of the finished product. When it is time for the installed architectural product to be removed, anodized aluminum is 100% recyclable, lending itself to post-consumer recycled content during demolition or restoration of the building.

Learn more about Linetec and its finishing services at http://www.linetec.com or by calling 888-717-1472.

Linetec is one of the nation's largest paint and anodize finishers, and the largest independent architectural finisher. Located in Wisconsin, the company serves customers across the country through a national trucking network and offers 500,000-square-feet of capacity for finishing such products as aluminum windows, wall systems, doors, hardware and other architectural metal components, as well as automotive, marine and manufactured consumer goods.

Pupils learn hands-on about river eco-system

SALCON Berhad has once again collaborated with two well-known NGOs Water Watch Penang (WWP) and Malaysian Water Partnership (MyWP) in bringing 30 primary pupils and four teachers from SJK (C) Puay Chai 2 to the Lembah Kiara Recreation Park, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur in a mission to discover and learn about the main water resource.

The excited pupils, aged between 10 and 12, trudged along the banks of the Penchala River that morning as they were taught how to conduct water samplings and carry out checks on micro-organisms found in the river.

They also learnt to appreciate its eco-system by carrying out a river clean-up at the end of the programme.

The outing gives the pupils an understanding of the source of their drinking water. Their enthusiasm has given us the passion to continue our mission to cultivate and teach the youths the importance of river and water conservation through the River Water Awareness programme, said Salcon Berhad senior manager (corporate) Chern Meng Gaik.

The main objective of the river water awareness programme is to help pupils increase their understanding of river systems and the reckless human behaviour that could contribute to unhealthy water quality.

Beh Yen Cheng, a teacher from SJK (C) Puay Chai 2 said: The programme provides a very good opportunity for our pupils to have hands-on experience of river water monitoring and to distinguish the various micro-organisms that exists in this riverbank.

As is normal human behaviour, the lesser one understands, the lesser one will be concerned.

Therefore we are honoured to have a corporate entity such as Salcon to nurture and promote the idea of conserving and sustaining our river to young generations as it can help minimise our environmental footprint, said a representative of WWP, Hong Chern Wern.

This is the fourth time Salcon is conducting such programmes in collaboration with WWP and MyWP. The last one was successfully held earlier this year for SK TTDI 2.

The programme is conducted as part of Salcons corporate responsibility programme to raise awareness of river water protection and conservation among school-going children in the Klang Valley.

"Even wear is crucial, if a fleet is looking for optimal steer tire performance," says Heger. "With the latest generation of low rolling resistance compounding, the new HSL2 Eco Plus offers not only SmartWay verified fuel saving performance, but also advanced wear characteristics."

The HSL2 Eco Plus's increased tread wear volume is a major longevity factor, says the company, with engineering specifically for balanced pressure distribution and vectored forces within the tire's footprint.

Continental's VAI, a graduated system of sipes that provide a visual indication of proper alignment, is also included from the previous generation product. However, the Eco Plus tread compounding, specially formulated for low rolling resistance, and footprint modifications are what Conti engineers have incorporated in this new tire to guard against irregular wear.

"Components of the Eco Plus compound were specifically selected to reduce two major concerns with steer tires: decoupler groove cracking and micro-cracking in the sipes," Heger says. "Both of these contribute to irregular wear and premature removal of the tire. In addition, we've modified the footprint of this tire for maximum performance. More even pressure distribution in the footprint versus the previous generation HSL2 reduces slippage and tread 'snap,' which also delivers more even wear.

"By utilizing our expertise in fuel efficient compounding, as well as delivering better wear through an advanced layout, we can now offer both the lowered rolling resistance and long mileage that fleets demand," he says.

Other features that ensure longer mileage and retreadability for the HSL2 Eco Plus are a premium four-ply belt package and advanced bead chafer construction for extended product life through the retreading phases, Heger said.

The HSL2 Eco Plus is available now in NAFTA markets, in sizes 11R22.5, 275/80R22.5, 11R24.5, and 285/75R24.5. These sizes offer 19/32nds tread depth and load ranges G and H. For product specifications, go to http://www.continental-truck.com
