CDA launches Report Card system for Chilka Lake

Bhubaneswar, Jun 25 : Chilika Development Authority (CDA) today launched a Report card System to assess the health of the eco system in Chilika, through a fullfledged monitoring system.

CDA Chief Executive Ajit Patnaik said Chilika is the first lake in Asia to develop the report card system for monitoring the health of the eco system.

Mr Patnaik said the Small Scale Funding (SSF) of the UNEP has sanctioned 1,18,000 Dollar for developing the card system project.

Under the project the entire lake and its outer channel would be divided into different ecological zones. The monitoring data including the water quality, sediment, macrophytes and biota would be generated to a scoring system.

The eco system health card would very comprehensively indicate the health of the ecosystem of each zone and the lake as a whole. This would also guide the management actions.

Institute of Ocean Management (IOM), Anna University, Chennai and the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), India have been identified as knowledge partners which would be reviewed by an expert group periodically.

The project would define basic basic indicators and values to ascertain the health of the lake and rivers discharged into it.

The role of ricer catchments and fresh water nutrient flushing into the lake, assessment of biochemcials, estimation of ovrall waterquality and coatsal water quality in the adjacent Bay of Bengal would be monitored, Mr Patnaik said. (UNI)

Eco-friendly air conditioning gaining ground in GCC

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Evaporative air conditioning of outdoor environment is the new trend in the Gulf and its demand is fast rising especially with the advent of summer.

"We forecast exponential growth over the next five years and all countries in the GCC region are supporting environmentally friendly and energy-efficient sources of air conditioning," Sabu Abraham, managing director of UAE-based ClimaGulf, told Khaleej Times during an interview.

Being cost-effective is the main advantage of evaporative air conditioning over conventional, refrigerated air conditioning as it consumes as little as 20 per cent of energy.

ClimaGulf has just been appointed master distributor in the GCC for Breezair, the evaporative air conditioning technology brand manufactured by Australian company Seeley International, following its success in promoting this concept in the UAE.

In the UAE, Breezair systems have been installed in diverse sites including Al Wasl vehicle testing centres; large commercial kitchens for hospitality and catering companies in Ruwais; the outdoor dining area for Fenyala Restaurant at Qanat Al Qasba; the Lucy switchgear manufacturing plant; RAK Ceramics' kiln area; leisure and heritage destinations like the Sharjah Heritage area; the Sky Diving Institute located on Al Ain Road; and secondary cooling for HVAC at the Streit Vehicle Factory in Ras Al Khaimah.

Abraham explained that the reasons for the rapid growth in the region could be enumerated as: increasing awareness of effectiveness of air-cooling systems during peak summer conditions in GCC; increasing electricity costs and low-energy consumption of air-cooling systems; and consciousness of health and safety in work places requiring comfort conditions in hotter industrial and construction environment. In five years time, ClimaGulf aims to be the market leader with a 20 per cent market share of branded evaporative cooling systems in the GCC region, he said. About the country in which the demand is highest, Abraham said that initially, Breezair was promoted only in the UAE.

As a result, demand is high in the UAE with the product being installed at several sites across the country. Further, it has been tried and tested successfully at several other locations in the UAE that are suitable for this type of air conditioning.

"We expect this trend to catch on soon in the neighbouring GCC states once we have established our regional distribution network. Conditions typical to countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait or even Al Ain in the UAE are ideal for these systems. However, due to the lack of awareness or probably due to lower energy tariffs, even these regions have been slow in picking up demand. The main reason could be attributed to lack of leading brands in these markets," Abraham said.

Evaporative air conditioning technology is ideal for hotter climates like the Middle East, as it cools air naturally, effectively and efficiently, he said. It is a simple process, wherein the cool breeze is created by hot ambient air passing over water-soaked cooling pads. Natural evaporation helps soak up the heat and cools the hot air. The effect created by evaporative air conditioning is similar to the cooler conditions found at or near large expanses of water.

Abraham said that some of the places where evaporative air conditioning can be used include schools and universities, factories, warehouses, commercial kitchens, outdoor Majlis, tents, outdoor restaurants, airports and hangars, bus stops, public and private zoo, sports grounds, outdoor swimming pools and in poultry farming.

Eco suction mat cleans shoes, never gets dirty

We all have mats by our front doors to wipe our shoes on, but they eventually get dirty themselves and end up getting thrown out. Thats not the case for this eco-mat developed by Paionia Furyokuki. It keeps itself clean by using suction pads which suck away any dirt on your shoes and on the mat itself.

In the video above you can see the mat with the suction hoses placed underneath to capture and draw away the dirt. The suction pads are turned on when the sensor detects a person approaching, the user then simply walks over the mat to have their shoes cleaned. This stops people carrying any dirt on the soles of their shoes into a building, potentially saving businesses money on cleaning bills.

The entire system consists of a mat, cleaner, hose, front and back slopes, and a sensor. No difficult installation is required either, simply lay the mat down where you want it, position the sensor, and youre good to go.

A single eco-mat system will set you back quite a bit, though. A mat, riser, hose, and cleaner will cost $6,250, but naturally they are designed for businesses. The mats come in three different shapes and are 50cm wide and 1m long.

The technology has only just started being publicised so it hasnt had much recognition yet. Every building could benefit from having such a mat, it would save money and create cleaner environments. Their main goal at the moment is to let the world know this product exists so they build interest.

One question Id like answered, though. How does it deal with muddy shoes? Surely the suction isnt good enough to get rid of such a sticky, heavy substance.

Rio+20 shows UN 'impotence' in global eco-crisis: analysts

By Richard Ingham

Rio de Janeiro, June 23, 2012 (AFP) -- The outcome of the Rio+20 summit provides further proof that the nation-state system is failing badly in tackling global environmental threats, say analysts.

The UN's Conference on Sustainable Development had been billed as a once-in-a-generation chance to overhaul an economic model that had left a billion people in poverty and imperiled the biosphere.

But veteran observers who watched the 10-day event drag to a close on Friday shook their heads in dismay.

To them, it was a fresh failure by the United Nations system, after the near-disastrous 2009 Copenhagen climate summit, to respond to eco-perils that are now approaching at express speed.

"It's a demonstration of political impotence, of system paralysis, and it makes me feel pessimistic about the system's ability to deliver," Laurence Tubiana, director of a French think-tank, the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), said in an interview.

"The multilateral process today is not delivering the urgent action we need," WWF's Jim Leape told AFP in an email.

"International action is in fact important, to galvanize a global response to these challenges, but it's clear that we need to look to leadership in other places... that means looking for changes everywhere -- communities, cities, national governments and companies."

After a three-day summit of 189 nation-states, the conference issued a 53-page declaration with the horizon-sweeping title "The Future We Want."

It itemized a distressingly long list of problems -- from global warming, deforestation and fisheries collapse to water stress, pollution and biodiversity loss that scientists fear could turn into a mass extinction.

NEW BEDFORD A sustainably-focused eco-caf in the city's South End celebrated its first full year in business in mid-June, holding a neighborhood party on a tree-top patio above the caf.

Owned and designed by Carol Fisher, the Center Caf is a small coffeehouse offering coffee, ice cream, breakfast and lunch items in a mixed residential and small business neighborhood close to New Bedford's beaches.

Fisher is also the owner of Effortless Design, a Charlestown-based design/build business that offers architectural, engineering, and construction management services. She tapped her design skills and interest in creating sustainable businesses when designing the New Bedford caf.

"A lot of (our sustainability work) comes from having a neighborhood focus, of having a place in the neighborhood, that people can walk to as an alternative to fast food," said Fisher.

Many customers typically come from within a four-to-five-block radius of the caf, Fisher said, allowing them to walk there. Being in a city neighborhood helps her business flourish while the cafe's presence also benefits the neighborhood, by adding a desirable amenity.

"People are glad that there's a little neighborhood caf when they move in or when they're looking at buying," said Fisher. "It really says something about the neighborhood."

With Malibu Eco, Chevrolet Earns Top Safety Pick Awards

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco earned top safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is the first and only all-new 2013 midsize car to receive double honors for safety, Chevy officials say, including a 5- Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Both are the highest ratings possible.

The IIHS tests vehicles to determine how well they protect occupants in front and side crash tests, in rollovers via a roof strength test, and simulated rear impacts to evaluate seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries. The Malibu Eco achieved a good score in all four types of tests performed and has standard electronic stability control, which the IIHS requires for Top Safety Pick designation.

In achieving the 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score, the Malibu Eco was tested under NHTSAs revised New Car Assessment Program. The overall score is based on frontal and side crash tests in addition to evaluation for rollover resistance. Under the rating system, performances in three test segments are combined mathematically into an Overall Vehicle Score.

With the Malibu Eco, Chevrolet has earned seven 2012 Top Safety Pick awards, said IIHS President Adrian Lund. The IIHS and NHTSA results demonstrate GMs commitment to state-ofthe art crash protection.

We are now seeing the results from our commitment to design the highest-rated vehicles in the world in safety performance, said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety.

The all-new Malibu is designed and engineered to help drivers avoid crashes, while protecting occupants if a crash occurs.

The Malibu Eco is the sixth Chevy model within the 2012 model year to achieve a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score for safety. The others include the Camaro Coupe, Sonic, Cruze, Volt and Traverse. The 2012 Malibu is also is a Top Safety Pick.

The Malibu Eco with fuel-saving eAssist technology is Chevrolets most fuel-efficient midsize car ever. It is on sale now in the United States with a base price including destination of $25,995.

Chevrolet is scheduled to roll out an all-new fuel-efficient 2.5L Ecotec engine on the full Malibu lineup this summer. A new turbo model will be available this fall.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Eco bus helps reduce costs

The proposed electric buses by Syarikat Prasarana Bhd will serve as a pilot project for future operational performance. Bernama pic

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana), which will be introducing electric buses in its operations, wants to reiterate its commitment to promote green technology.

Our Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is a serious business venture and marks the beginning of a new era in public transportation.

The deployment of electric buses under the BRT project will not only be a showcase for green technology, but also serve as a pilot project for future operational performance of electric buses in the country.

The operation of buses, which will be under subsidiary RapidKL, is in line with the company's effort to reduce the level of harmful gases emitted by diesel-powered buses.

While the initial investment is big, it will be more economical compared with the maintenance of diesel-powered buses that require top overhaul of engines every 21/2 years and complete overhaul of engines every five years.

When we compare the 10-year life cycle of both buses, the electric bus is cheaper and helps eliminate a lot of these maintenance and invisible costs such as breakdowns. Plus, it emits no gas at all.

The new BRT-Sunway Line project -- a public-private partnership project between Prasarana, a government-owned company and Sunway Bhd -- will involve 15 electric buses running on dedicated guideways and passing through strategic places in Bandar Sunway with a length of more than 6km.

The BRT is a fully rapid transit system, combining the excellent features of rail systems with flexibility and cost savings of using over-the-road and environmentfriendly vehicles that operate on their own roadways and lanes, thus maximising speed and service.

Construction work is scheduled to commence in the second quarter of next year and is expected to be completed by 2014.

GORD Launches Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) as New Benchmark for Sustainable Development

DOHA, Qatar--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Gulf Organization for Research and Development (GORD), the authority for knowledge on sustainability in the MENA region, has today 7th of June 2012 launched the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) as the standard for excellence on sustainability in the MENA region. Respectively, GOR0D presents ECO VILLA, as a landmark project that will reinforce Qatars reputation as a leading advocate of sustainable development. The Green Villa has been designed to achieve a score of 4 stars based on the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), as it offers a genuinely sustainable, smart and healthy living environment for residents.

GORD has selected 3 consulting firms; LSI Architects, MYAA Architects & RHWL Architects to design a sustainable Qatari Modern villa. A committee has been formed consisting of representatives from the Museum Authority, Ministry of Cultural, Arts & Heritage, Qatar University and Private Office, in addition to region's experts to manage the bidding process and oversee the design of the ECO VILLA.

Dr Yousef Mohammed Al-Horr, Founding Chairman of GORD, said: The ECO VILLA exemplifies the vision of Qatar to be one of the global leaders in the pursuit of sustainable socioeconomic growth and development. Moreover, it is being developed according to stringent standards of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS). The Green Villa will be one of the most coveted residential addresses in Qatar, while it will also serve as a model community for sustainable living.

The sustainable features of the ECO VILLA include on-site renewable energy generation system, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and irrigation system, energy reduction, indoor lighting design, and intelligent building control system. The ECO VILLA will also be constructed using sustainable and recycled eco-friendly building materials that have low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emission rates.

Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) formerly known as Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS) is the most comprehensive sustainability rating system in the world. The change in Name came to support the all-inclusive offering of the system in assessing all types of developments starting from macro level such as master plans for cities to micro level such as single buildings. Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) is unique in catering for specific typologies such as sports & mosques.

GSAS looks into various types of typologies such as GSAS Core & Shell, GSAS Schools, GSAS Residential Single, GSAS Residential Group, GSAS Mosques, GSAS Hotels, GSAS Light Industries, GSAS Neighbourhoods, GSAS Construction, GSAS Operations, GSAS Health Care, GSAS Railways & others.

Dr. Yousef Mohammed Al-Horr, Founding Chairman of GORD, said: The launch of the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS/QSAS) is a huge step forward in our mission to promote sustainable applications and practices within the framework of a globalised society. We have conducted in-depth studies of 40 green building codes from around the world in order to develop a truly comprehensive and genuinely global-oriented assessment scheme. GSAS/QSAS embarks on creating a new standard for sustainable benchmarking in green building developments.

GSAS/QSAS has recently been incorporated in Qatar Construction Specification 2010 as chapter 7 Green Construction.

Ministry of Environment launched the fourth edition of Qatar Construction Specifications, QCS 2010, specifying a series of measures to pave way for green buildings and gardens in the country and to ensure safety of construction workers. Making the announcement at a formal ceremony held at Marriott Hotel, the Assistant Under-Secretary for Laboratories and Standardisation at the MoE, Dr. Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari said: The launch of the new specifications will have far reaching results as all new government buildings such as mosques, schools and hospitals, being approved from December 31 onwards will have to adhere strictly to the green building specifications. It is worth mentioning that Ashghal, in several occasions, has announced its commitment to apply GSAS along all future government projects. Such commitment is considered as a great achievement for GORD "GSAS" since Ashghal is considered to be the first governmental institution to adopt GSAS completely. He added that many mandatory requirements for private constructions are that they must employ energy and water saving measures, reduce solid waste and wastewater and improve indoor environment to safeguard public health.

Gore’s eco-friendly firm lands $16M contract to manage city pension funds

Heres an inconvenient truth: New York is greening the wallet of Al Gore.

Embattled city Comptroller John Liu has delivered a $16.56 million contract to the former vice presidents environmentally friendly investment firm, Generation Investment Management, to help manage hundreds of millions of dollars in city pension funds, The Post has learned.

The Comptrollers Office had previously awarded Gores firm $12.8 million in pension-fund business under Lius predecessor, Bill Thompson.

Since 2009, state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli has approved $6 million in contracts to the firm, co-founded and chaired by Gore. Generation now manages nearly a half-billion dollars of state pension-fund investments, records show.

Building on green reputation

Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD), the government entity aiming to position Qatar as the capital of green building, will construct an Eco Villa as an example of a sustainable, smart and healthy living environment. The open-to-the-public landmark project will reinforce Qatars reputation as a leading advocate of sustainable development, Dr Yousef Mohamed al-Horr, founding chairman of GORD, announced yesterday. The Green Villa has been designed to achieve a minimum score of four stars based on the GORD developed Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), which has six stars as its highest rating. GORD has selected three consulting firms; LSI Architects, MYAA Architects & RHWL Architects to design the Eco Villa on a public space. A committee has been formed with representatives from Qatar Museums Authority, Ministry of Culture, Arts & Heritage, Qatar University, Private Office of Emiri Diwan, and regional experts. The Eco Villa exemplifies the vision of Qatar to be one of the global leaders in the pursuit of sustainable socioeconomic growth and development, Dr al-Horr explained. The sustainable features of the Eco Villa include on-site renewable energy generation system, water-efficient plumbing fixtures and irrigation system, energy reduction, indoor lighting design, and intelligent building control system. The Eco Villa will be constructed using sustainable and recycled eco-friendly building materials that have low Volatile Organic Compounds emission rates. Indoor and outdoor gardens, water features, wind towers, wood panelling, smart use of daylight to provide indoor illumination through latticework and skylights, and a high roof to reduce the impact of heat are among the features of the Eco Villa. The design has been finalised and construction will begin soon, Dr al-Horr added. Once the Eco Villa is ready, members of the public would be able to visit the facility and learn about the sustainable, smart and healthy living environment.
