ATL launches Eco-Smart Seal

KINGSTON, Jamaica Appliance Traders Limited (ATL) announced this week the launch of its Eco-Smart certification.

The programme is designed to earmark energy-efficient electronics in the companys product line-up.

Much like the international trademark standard Energy-Star, ATLs Eco-Smart seal will be affixed to electronics and appliances that are proven to meet international standards in energy efficiency.

With energy costs on the rise many home-owners and businesses are going green and are looking for eco-conscious appliances to reduce their energy bills as well as their environmental impact, said Paul Grey head of ATLs engineering and energy department.

With our new Eco-Smart seal our customers are assured that the product can save them as much as 60 per cent of their energy costs without sacrificing performance, features and comfort, he added.

ATL has had a long history in delivering engineered solutions working with leading international technology companies. Last year ATL leveraged its 32-year partnership with Panasonic to design and install an eco-village at Sandals Montego Bay. This project, which is the first of its kind in Jamaica, boasts an entirely self-sufficient solar power system to operate all the hotels cooling, heating, lighting and entertainment systems. The project was established as a pilot to demonstrate the savings to be accrued from the implementation of alternative energy sources.

The Eco-Smart Certification is the first of many initiatives that ATL plans to spearhead through its energy portfolio. Eco-electronics has become a big part of our business and we are dedicated to delivering to our clients solutions that will impact their bottom line, said Grey.

CSR Accelerates Low-Power, Mixed-Signal Chip Tapeout With Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation System

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - Oct 9, 2012) - Cadence Design Systems, Inc. ( NASDAQ : CDNS ), a leader in global electronic design innovation, announced that CSR plc ( LSE : CSR ) ( NASDAQ : CSRE ), a global provider of innovative silicon and software solutions for the location-aware, media-rich, cloud-connected world, sped tapeout of a complex low-power, mixed-signal chip by using the Cadence Encounter Digital Implementation (EDI) System, Cadence Incisive Enterprise Simulator (IES), and Cadence Conformal Low Power (CLP). The Cadence digital flow enabled CSR to tape out a 40-nanometer low-power Bluetooth and Wi-Fi combo chip speedily and efficiently, delivering excellent results in power, area and time-to-market.

The multi-radio chip included several analogue blocks, multi-million gate instances, multiple voltage islands and complex switchable power domains. The Cadence hierarchical Common Power Format (CPF) based comprehensive power intent methodology allowed CSR to precisely capture and manage power intent throughout the flow. The EDI System helped reduce power domain crossings and made designing with multiple supply voltages much easier. The net result was significant power savings while optimizing area and performance automatically. For verification, CSR performed power-aware simulation with IES, and formal checking using CLP, to confirm the correct implementation of its power architecture against the golden CPF.

In addition, the EDI System's timing and signal integrity engineering change order (ECO) flow helped to significantly accelerate the sign-off correlation fixing cycles leading to faster timing convergence and signal integrity signoff. The resulting productivity improvements helped shave off several weeks from CSR's design schedule.

"In another recent multi-radio chip tapeout, the Cadence EDI System and low-power design methodology enabled us to effectively implement and optimize a consistent set of design and multi-supply-voltage power domain constraints across a complex digital-driven mixed-signal hierarchy," said Steven D. Gray, Ph.D., CTO of CSR. "We gained significant power savings and achieved faster timing and signal-integrity signoff. As a result of this tapeout success, we have confidence in using the Cadence EDI System and CPF-driven low-power flow across all of our mobile connectivity and automotive designs."

The Cadence Encounter RTL-to-GDSII flow helps design teams optimize power, performance and area for the world's most sophisticated high-performance, low-power designs at advanced nodes. The integrated Cadence flow includes Encounter RTL Compiler, EDI System, and signoff-proven Cadence QRC Extraction, and Encounter Timing System. The new GigaOpt optimization engine inside EDI System produces high-quality results faster than traditional optimization engines by harnessing the power of multiple CPUs. In addition, the integrated CCOpt technology unifies clock tree synthesis with logic/physical optimization resulting in significant power, performance and area improvements.

"The demand for low-power mixed-signal designs for consumer electronics is skyrocketing. The CSR design team chose Cadence for our mature and comprehensive low-power solutions that meet the most pressing challenges of complex SoC design," said Chi-Ping Hsu, senior vice president, research and development, Silicon Realization Group at Cadence. "The Encounter digital flow provided a predictable design closure path, meeting and exceeding CSR's stringent design and time to market requirements. We worked closely with CSR to help them achieve tapeout success for this innovative low-power and mixed-signal SoC."

Perak, Penang Inshore Fishermen Seek Action Against Trespassing Fishermen

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 (Bernama) -- Inshore fishermen in Kerian, Perak and Penang have asked the authorities to act against trespassing fishermen using the so-called "Apollo" nets which they claim harm the eco-system and undermine their catch.

The president of the Education and Welfare Association of the Malaysian Inshore Fishermen's Network (Jaring), Jamaluddin Mohamad, said today the trespassing fishermen had modified the nets into damaging and illegal aids.

"The nets were used since the 1980s under the seine net licence issued by the Fisheries Department, but the nets of today do not adhere to that classification," he said in a statement.

He urged the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Fisheries Department to act immediately against the trespassing fishermen, saying the Apollo nets damaged the eco-system and fish-breeding locations.

Jamaluddin said the inshore fishermen feared for their lives because some of the Apollo net boat operators allegedly used ball firecrackers to scare away the inshore fishermen.

The authorities must address the issue because it can undermine the country's fisheries sector and threaten the livelihood of the inshore fishermen, he said.

State Parks in Danger

They're beautiful, they're close to home, and they're steeped in history. But the best reason to vacation in one of our 6,624 state parks? They're fast becoming an endangered species.

California's Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve has made big news twice in the past two years. The first time came in December 2010, when scientists thought they'd discovered an unusual form of bacteria that devoured arsenic while it lurked in the mud around the lake's knobby limestone spires. But it was the second headline, five months later, that was really scary. That was when California's state parks department announced that Mono Lake itself was about to be wiped out--though by a far more mundane force.

See the State Parks Now

Mono was one of 70 parks targeted by the state in an effort to cut $22 million from California's budget gap, which totaled $9.2 billion at the time. Also on the list: Jack London's former home and writing studio in Sonoma County and a handful of old-growth redwood forests along the northern coast. All told, California was talking about mothballing about 25 percent of its 278 parks. The news hasn't been much better elsewhere. New York, Illinois, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Virginia, and Idaho have contemplated closing parks in recent years; Ohio has considered leasing some state park lands for oil and gas drilling to help raise money; and Virginia has explored corporate partnerships to keep park gates open.

What gets lost in this game of budgetary Russian roulette is how precious these lands can be. State parks, such as the ones you'll see here, often rival their national-park cousins in sheer beauty: Did you know that Niagara Falls is actually a New York state park? Last year, the nation's 6,624 state parks attracted 720 million visitors, more than twice what the national parks see, and they do it with almost $1 billion less in annual operating revenue. "Some states have had cuts of 30, 40, 50 percent or more in their operating budgets, and some budgets have been cut twice in one year," says Rich Dolesh, the vice president for conservation and parks at the National Recreation and Park Association.

Yet, true to their more-with-less ethos, state parks are finding imaginative ways to hang on. Michigan has seen some success selling annual passes to its parks system, and other states have made arrangements with communities and nonprofits to share the financial burden-at least for a while. In April 2012, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo pledged $89 million for repairs and improvements to his state's parks. As for California: As of press time, 65 of the 70 endangered parks had been temporarily spared-including Mono Lake-thanks to help from the communities that depend on them. They've cobbled together private donations, volunteer staffing, and funding by city and county governments and nonprofits to try to bridge the gaps. We may not be out of the woods yet, but we're certainly sniffing out the trail.

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

California

This park's namesake tufa towers, limestone formations that rise from its 65-square-mile lake, are impressive from wherever you're standing. But to fully apprecate them, you've got to approach like an osprey might: coming in low over the water. Can't fly? Then bring a canoe. Up close, the spires resemble white-chalk skyscrapers, a kind of surreal city that's visited by more than a million migratory birds each year. Just don't get too close to the ospreys themselves. From April through August, the birds nest on the towers, and it's forbidden to come within 200 yards.

Like anything else this old-the lake has been around for anywhere from 760,000 to 3 million years-Mono Lake endured its share of woe long before the latest California budget struggle. Between 1941 and 1981, Mono lost half its volume and doubled in salinity after four of its five tributaries were diverted to supplement Los Angeles's water supply. Even now, it's almost three times as salty as the ocean. Yet, thanks to the Mono Lake Committee, which rallied to reclaim those lost streams in 1978, the lake is slowly filling up again. And now that the nonprofit Bodie Foundation has stepped in to help keep Mono Lake open to the public, you'll be able to witness the lake's gradual climb back to a healthy level-however long that takes. Let's hope we can say the same for the rest of California's parks.

Daimer Introduces Pressure Washer Machines for Faster, Eco-Friendly Chewing Gum Removal

Pressure washers' steam temperatures up to 330F offer up to ten times faster gum removal than other technologies.

Woburn, MA (PRWEB) October 04, 2012

Unsightly gum spots on sidewalks globally are more apparent than ever before. says Daimer Industries spokesman, Matthew Baratta. We are extremely pleased we can offer environmentally sound, technologically advanced machines to remove them quickly.

Daimer's Super Max 7000 represents a "greener" approach to chewing gum removal. The system is the industry's leading steam pressure washer, offering the highest temperature wet steam flow available to actually vaporize gum spots quickly from concrete sidewalks, parking lots, brick, pavers, and most other hard surfaces outdoors. The machine goes well beyond hot water pressure washer temperatures to dissolve up to an unprecedented 1200 pieces of gum per hour. This translates into approximately ten times the cleaning power of other technologies.

Steam vapor technology is currently marketed for chewing gum removal. Unlike vapor cleaning systems that require a chemical pre-spray and brushes to massage each spot, the Super Max 7000 cleans in a touch-less and chemical-free manner. The result is a faster, more effective, and less tedious approach.

The machine requires only a single 110 volt electrical power cord for power and a 40 pound propane tank to heat cold water to wet steam within approximately 30 seconds. Most gas pressure washer machines use gasoline or oil, which create greenhouse gases. However, the Super Max's propane heating system will not negatively impact the ozone layer, since it is not a fossil fuel, and will not rise into the upper atmosphere.

The Super Max system is a breakthrough in technology since it produces only 1000 psi, which is up to one-quarter the pressure level of conventional pressure washer equipment rated at up to 4000 psi. The 7000, with a low flow rate of only 2.5 gallons per minute and temperature up to 280F higher than high-flow cold water systems, cleans more quickly, yet does not etch concrete or hurt pavers like higher pressure machines.

Other brands' lower temperature machines generate 100% water while the 7000's flow is approximately 65% water and 35% vapor. Contrary to machines generating 100% water flow, requiring cleaning at night, the 7000 can be used during the day, even on surfaces with pedestrian traffic. The flow is directed towards the gum spots and does not flood the entire area to be cleaned.

Super Max 7000 systems are also available in 220-240 volt, 60Hz and 50Hz for shipment to customers globally. A propane tank is included with each machine, and additional tanks are available at any welding supply store worldwide.

Eco-friendly Move by Chesapeake – Analyst Blog

US gas giant Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK) is planning to develop a 100% green mixture of fluids for fracturing oil and gas formations underground. In line with this move, it is experimenting with hydraulic-fracturing fluids prepared entirely from eco-friendly materials in wells.

According to management, the current frac fluid formulations frequently contain risky components like hydrochloric acid or diesel fuel. Environmentalists believe that these components create a threat to water supplies.

Chesapeake is analyzing numerous environment friendly methods in several shale formations. The details of these shale formations have not been disclosed. The company is apprehensive of the fact that drilling a well costs about $4 million to $6 million. Meanwhile, if an untested frac system is pushed down a well it would damage the reservoir, resulting in wastage of resources.

Therefore, Chesapeake is testing the green fracking fluids to curtail threats from surface leak of drilling sites close to lakes, creeks and rivers. It would also help in reducing workers' contact with potentially dangerous substances.

Another process developed by Halliburton uses ultraviolet light that destroys bacteria in the fracking fluid, combining the technology with a recycling process called CleanWave that uses an electrical charge to detach contaminants and clean the water.

The efforts by Chesapeake will go a long way in helping the company to grow in the rising environment friendly surroundings.

Chesapeake carries a Zacks #3 Rank, which is equivalent to a Hold rating for a period of one to three months. Longer term, we maintain our Neutral recommendation.

Wanderport's Eco-Friendly Microwave Water Heating Technology Poised To Become "The New Industry Efficiency Standard In …

NEW YORK, Sept.27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Wanderport Corp. (OTC Markets-PINKSHEETS: "WDRP") On the heels of the company's recent confirmation of a functioning on-demand multi-cavity microwave water heating unit (MCMHU) and before releasing the name of the independent laboratory contracted to supply the unit's efficiency results, Mr. Robert Simoneau, Wanderport's Technical Advisor and Product Licensor, today summarized his thoughts on how to accurately benchmark and contrast Wanderport's proprietary eco-friendly microwave heat-engine technology performance efficiency results versus efficiency claims categorized and classified by others within the water heating industry.

Mr. Simoneau began by saying, "All water heaters consume some form(s) of energy in order to fulfill their stated purpose, which is to heat water. Traditional water heaters utilize energy solely in the form of "direct" consumption. An example of this would be natural gas, propane, electricity, etc., consumed to create heat. In the case of gas powered heaters, a controlled fire is used in proximity to a heat exchanger capable of handling high temperature. In the case of electric water heaters, a resistive element is used in proximity or immersed in the medium. These units have efficiency ratings (EF) that vary from about .67 to .95, where 1 is the theoretical maximum representing 'unity.' In other words, if your unit has an EF of 1 and is a unit utilizing a single 'direct' energy source, then the unit is operating at theoretical maximum efficiency.Other tangible losses, usually relating to usage patterns are more difficult to quantify and we would only require considering them when discussing heaters that require storage capacity. If this is the case, then we must ask why certain water heaters have claims of an efficiency rating (EF) greater than 1 or 'unity.'"

To answer this question, Mr. Simoneau continued by saying, "In addition to these aforementioned technologies, a number of water heaters, which I will refer to as 'bi-energy,' have also been introduced into the marketplace. These models utilize a primary source of energy, such as electricity, and a secondary, such as solar or ambient air heat extraction (heat pump). These models are rated at efficiency rating (EF) levels that surpass 'unity' ranging from approximately EF 1.2 to EF 2.2 inferring that they are inherently more efficient than 'direct consumption' models. In actual fact, the 'extra' EF of .2 to 1.2 is energy that is being consumed from an alternate source and the larger EF number does not relate to any increased efficiency in consumption of the primary power source. In the case of a heat pump, this can be quite important since water heaters are often installed indoors. Understandably, if the heat being extracted from ambient air is being generated by an HVAC system, then the actual 'cost' or burden of this energy is attributed to the HVAC system and not added to the water heaters' consumption, something not readily apparent and not qualified in the stated EF figure. Consumers should determine whether their total cost of energy consumption is important or if they prefer enjoying a reduction in the cost of water heating whilst experiencing an increase in the cost of heating their home and possibly a net increase in the overall cost of energy consumption."

Mr. Simoneau went on to say, "Something that is also common to both solar and heat pump water heaters is the requirement of a storage tank and the often lengthy recovery times, hence proper sizing is paramount. However, allowing for proper sizing is acknowledging that a compromise needs to be made between storage capacity and desired use. In other words, if you design a system to never run out of hot water, then you are, by definition, heating water that remains unused. This loss of energy is also not always considered when examining the efficiency rating (EF) levels or EF claims by their manufacturer. Why is this important? It is imperative that we all recognize that no form of energy is 'free' and that the method of comparing water heaters in order to obtain 'apples to apples' data is desirable but not easily ascertained."

Mr. Simoneau suggested that one of the most important factors to consider when comparing water heaters is the overall efficiency. For example, the ability to convert the energy medium consumed into actual heated water. The minimum efficiency rating as required in order to obtain Energy Star Qualification varies depending upon fuel type, technology and configuration. In the case of gas water heaters, a minimum EF of .67 for storage and a minimum of .82 for tank-less is required (source: http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/publications/infosource/pub/home/14553). For the sake of comparison, an electric storage tank will range from efficiency rating (EF) of .9 to an EF of .95 (source: http://www.aceee.org/consumer/water-heating). Clearly these examples as cited have not achieved the theoretical maximum of "unity" and demonstrate the existence of inherent energy losses and inefficiencies.

To sum-up Mr. Simoneau stated, "When initial tests were performed using Wanderport's single cavity microwave water heater (a first generation functioning test unit), we calculated an efficiency comparing favourably to the high-end of the most efficient electric storage models. The SCMHU was designed for characterization and this data led us to develop the multi-cavity microwave water heating unit (Wanderport's second generation functioning unit). Conversely, the results from the MCMHU are expected to be at the very highest level of efficiency of any direct consumption or tank-less technology available, while permitting increased flow rates and delta T's (temperature change) suitable to be employed outside the laboratory environment in a variety of applications. For this, slow yet steady progress from theory and ideas to tangible and practical has been made and we have every reason to be excited about this accomplishment. I join Wanderport's management and shareholders in anticipation of Wanderport announcing the name of the external laboratory recognized as a leader in HVAC on or before October 18th, 2012. This facility is performing a multitude of efficiency tests on the MCMHU where the results will be made public. The coming weeks will produce what I expect will arouse industry recognition and the eventual acceptance of our microwave heating technology as the new efficiency standard in on-demand electric water heating for the 21st Century."

H.B. Fuller Announces Bulk Feed Capability and System Network Option for the Liquamelt® Adhesive System

ST. PAUL, Minn., Oct. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- H.B. Fuller (FUL) announces two advances for the Liquamelt adhesive systema bulk feed option that eliminates the need for on-floor staff to refill the adhesive reservoir and a gateway I/O option that will allow the system's operation to be monitored by the packaging machine control system. "These new features, when combined with the potential energy savings, maintenance savings, safety and eco-advantages of the Liquamelt cool adhesive technology, present a compelling alternative to traditional hot melt adhesive sealing," said Dave Mancuso, business development manager/Liquamelt of H.B. Fuller.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121001/CG82797)

The bulk feed capability is accomplished by the delivery of Liquamelt adhesive in a large container that is replaced when emptied. Typically hot melt adhesive is dispensed from the hot tank of a conventional system or from a reservoir close to the hot melt system. The bulk delivery option allows containers to be located remotely and the Liquamelt adhesive to be safely transferred from the sealed containers to the packaging machines through common non-heated fluid hoses. As Liquamelt adhesive is supplied at room temperature and heated just prior to application by the Turboactivator technology located inside the packaging machine, heated transport hoses are not required. Three bulk container sizes are offered: 30 liter drum, 50 gallon drum, and 2,500 pound tote. These options maintain the Liquamelt system's cool on delivery hot on demand operating approach by easily delivering room temperature liquid adhesive from a variety of package options to the Liquamelt application equipment reservoir. Providing a closed, continuous fill operation is important in reducing waste, resulting in lower overall operating costs.

The gateway I/O option enables external communication and provides machine health status. It will allow monitoring of the Liquamelt adhesive system by the OEM equipment and ensure efficient and reliable line operation.

H.B. Fuller's Gen2 Liquamelt adhesive systems are currently under development and the company has scheduled a "Next Generation Brainstorming Event" to be held at Pack Expo 2012 to obtain user feedback and OEM input on new features and functionality of the system. The Liquamelt adhesive system debuted at Pack Expo Las Vegas 2011 as a- revolutionary alternative to hot melt sealing that delivers a up to a 50 percent improvement in mileage per pound and up to a 50 percent reduction or more in energy costs compared to traditional hot melt. Additional benefits include a non-petroleum formulation based on 40% sustainable raw materials, elimination of heated hoses and related safety concerns, and a formulation composition that helps ensure no char or adhesion to packaging machinery for clean operation and easy cleanup.

Ford fits in Focus app that lauds fuel-efficient driving

Published on 02 October 2012 Hits: 55

FORD has fitted its new Focusnow sold at the brands dealerships in the Philippineswith what it calls a handy software application thats aimed at helping coach customers in the art of eco-driving. The system rewards drivers with kudos displayed on a screen, and which include championship cup icons and playful titles such as Advanced ECO driver or the ECO champion top prize.

Called EcoMode, the system generates a personalized driver operation scorecard by monitoring engine rpm, vehicle speed, accelerator position, clutch position, selected gear and engine temperature. The variables are related to the drivers gear-shifting habits, anticipation and speed.

Drivers can review their generated score against the softwares optimized patterns through a five-leaf icon, with two leaves set as the default and five leaves being the maximum score. The scoring system gives hints on how to gain more leaves through advices like Smooth driving saves fuel or Early shifting saves fuel.

The foot of the driver has one of the biggest impacts on real-world fuel economy of a vehicle and was the starting point for the development of EcoMode, said Thomas Schick, an engineer with the Ford of Germany Core Vehicle Integration team who helped design the software. Trying to reach the maximum score while in EcoMode leads to a driving style that is optimized for fuel economy.
