Eco walk, butterflies highlight city's Earth Week events

As part of the national Earth Week celebration April 21 to 25, the city of Boynton Beach will have a series of educational activities and talks on the city's existing greenways, blueways and trailways projects.

The greenways/bikeways network encourages people to leave their cars at home and explore alternative means of recreation and transportation and makes it easier for school children to bike to school.

"We hope to create a livable, sustainable system to meet the demands of our population," said Carisse LeJeune, assistant city manager.

Demographic trends indicate many seniors are relocating from the suburbs back to the cities.

"Aging baby boomers and the generation after them are choosing to live in high-density urban areas when they retire," LeJeune said. "But, they want these areas to have entertainment, culture, be walkable and near public transportation."

She said that the city has "shovel-ready" projects on hand, waiting for state funding to become available.

"The Earth Week activities engage the community and conservation organizations to learn about the city's existing greenways, blueways and trailways," said Debby Coles-Dobay, the city's public arts manager. "Future plans are to link these areas with their points of interest to regional systems beyond Boynton's borders."

Events include a mangrove walk at the marina bird walk by Linda Humphries, Audubon vice president, and a walk and talk along the Old Dixie Eco Walk with eco-artist Lucy Keshavarz.

Keshavarz will discuss her work, butterfly migration, endangered butterflies, their habitats and the benefits of native plantings.

Warren Adams, the city's historical preservation planner and the forester/environmentalist, will give an historical preservation talk and specimen tree walk.

China at center of the global gold eco-system

April 15, 2014 - 17:35 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - China's demand for gold is set to rise by about 20% over the next few years, the World Gold Council has estimated, as the population becomes more wealthy, according to BBC News.

The council estimates private sector demand for gold in China will rise to at least 1,350 tonnes by 2017.

Chinese customers bought 1,132 tonnes of gold last year, in jewellery as well as gold bars and coins for investment.

The forecast comes as China becomes the world's largest gold-consuming nation since last year, overtaking India.

The World Gold Council says China is at the "center of the global gold eco-system", as rapid urbanisation creates a rising middle class.

Albert Cheng, from the World Gold Council, said: "The cultural affinity for gold runs deep in China and when this is combined with an increasingly affluent population and a supportive government, there is significant room for the market to grow even further. Whilst China faces important challenges as it seeks to sustain economic growth and liberalise its financial system, growth in personal incomes and the public's pool of savings should support a medium term increase in the demand for gold, in both jewellery and investment."

According to the council, consumers bought a record amount of gold last year, with Asia's economic heavyweights China and India in the top two spots.

In Western markets demand for the precious metal remained strong, particularly in the US, where people bought a lot of gold jewellery as well as gold bars and coins.

Family Dollar Promptly Applying EAS Loss-Prevention Technology To Stores Nationwide

By Megan Zielinski, contributing writer

Checkpoint Systems, leading global supplier of merchandise availability solutions for retail businesses, recently announced they are rapidly supplying more than 8,000 Family Dollar Stores with electronic article surveillance (EAS) systems nationwide. Since deployment in October 2013, 3,500 systems have been installed and 120 are happening each week, this marks the move as one of the fastest introductions of the new service for Checkpoint.

Family Dollar will be implementing use of Checkpoints source tagging, hard tagging program on merchandise as well as installing EVOLVE P10 ECO, the most advanced shrink management system on the market throughout all stores by December of this year. The powerful EAS system features include data analytics, alarm management, energy savings, and RFID technology. All three systems combined will provide Family Dollar with an all-inclusive approach to reducing shrink and increase sales.

Family Dollar entered into a multi-year agreement with Checkpoint in October 2013 after analyzing positive results during three years of testing EVOLVE P10 ECO system in select stores. Use of EVOLVE ECO electronics is expected to reduce store shrink in addition to reducing energy consumption by 75 percent compared to other solution alternatives. We are thrilled to participate in the continued success story of Family Dollar. This is a proven program, with a significant ROI, so our focus is on speedy and efficient implementation. The program is also a strategic platform for future added value; the long-term partnership, therefore, is exciting for both companies, states Per Levin, President and Chief Sales Officer, Shrink Management and Merchandise Visibility Solutions, Checkpoint Systems.

According to a study through Euromonitor International in 2013, Checkpoint revealed that with the increase in organized crime, shoplifting, and employee theft, companies are suffering, as shrink is continuously escalating. Global Retail Theft Barometer 2012-2013 revealed, shrink cost the retail industry more than $112 billion globally in 2012, representing 1.4 percent of retail sales. As a result, more and more retailers are placing shrink reduction at the top of their priority list, investing in resourceful, high-quality technology solutions to prevent loss. Retailers are deploying RFID-based solutions that combine protection with visibility at the item level. This type of strategic platform, combined with investments in people and processes, opens up new horizons to reduce out of stocks, improve merchandise availability for consumers, and increase sales for retailers, explains Levin.

Bentley plugs into electric technology.. and prepares to go…

Comments(0)

B ENTLEY is to showcase its first ever hybrid petrol-electric battery which will power its forthcoming SUV and pave the way for much wider use of the eco-friendly technology.

The Crewe luxury car maker will be displaying the system in this Mulsanne concept car later this month at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in China.

It is developing a plug-in hybrid system whereby the car has a battery driven electric motor which is charged both by various energy recovery systems built into the car while it is running, and by leaving it plugged into a recharger system at home, work or one of the rapidly increasing number of publicly available points. And Bentley says the results will be impressive.

A spokesman said: "The plug-in hybrid system will offer a power increase of up to 25 per cent, together with a 70 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions, both without any compromise to the exquisite luxury, timeless design and industry-leading refinement for which Bentley has become renowned.

"Bentley hybrids will also be capable of driving at least 30 miles on electric power alone, allowing for emissions-free city driving with the option of enhanced performance on the open road."

The hybrid system will first be produced for the company's new SUV in 2017, but will rapidly be rolled-out to the rest of the model range.

Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, said: "There is no doubt that plug-in hybrid technology is true to Bentley's values of outstanding luxury and effortless performance.

"Combining our renowned engines with electric power reinforces and enhances both principles and so we will gradually introduce this powertrain across our model range.

"By the end of the decade, at least 90 per cent of our production will be available as a plug-in hybrid.

BSE upgrades its trading platform to Bolt Plus

BSE has changed its trading system to the new trading system acquired from Deutsche Boerse from April 7, 2014 on its Equity segment. Earlier, BSE had already implemented this system for currency derivatives on November 28, 2013, Interest Rate Futures on January 28, 2014, and Equity derivatives on February 10, 2014.

The New Trading System is currently providing 200 micro seconds response time with a through put capacity of 5,00,000 orders per second. It is faster than any exchange in India by at least 10 times with through put capacity also higher by similar numbers. Despite the increase in speed, BSE doesnt intend to provide preferential treatment to members having co-location servers.

This is the largest ever technology transformation in India ever attempted where more than 900 broker members with more than 1 lakh branches have experienced the new trading system of BSE. By extension, several lakh users have been able to experience the new trading system. More than 50 vendors participated in this mammoth exercise over a period of 6 months to ensure a smooth transition for members and users.

Internationally, this is one of the smoothest technology transfer that has taken place. Most exchanges in India have not attempted technology change due to the apprehension that it may not work out. BSE had taken a call to implement new technology 2 years back and has successfully implemented this technology transfer.

Over the first 2 days of trading, more than 900 members have traded on this system which is close to the peak number of members we get on the BSE platform. Similarly, more than 13.66 crore orders were entered in the new system which works out to more than 6,000 orders per second on average basis through out the day. Peak order entry observed was more than 16,000 orders per second. Such high peak rates on the second day of technology implementation were beyond expectations and suggest an excellent adoption of new technology by all market participants.

Minor teething troubles were seen by few participants during opening session in the morning which have been identified and rectification put into motion. We believe that system of various participants will stabilise over few days in terms of their integration with BSEs new trading platform and provide India a world class integrated trading platform eco- system which will put Indian exchanges in the top 1 percentile of the trading platforms in the world in terms of speed and throughput.

This entire new technology platform has been built on open source software and commodity hardware which provides the lowest cost exchange operating framework to BSE as compared to any exchange of its size in the world.

BSE is currently considered the 4th largest index option exchange in the world, 4th largest currency futures exchange in the world, 5th largest currency options exchange in the world, 8th largest exchange in the world by number of orders and 14th in the world by market capitalisation. (source WFE)

The ranking of BSE is expected to improve substantially in many of these areas once the new system is adopted well and is implemented in all brokerage houses in entirety over the next few days.

BSE is pleased with the progress in technology transfer for the first 2 days.

Eco-friendly fluid keeps SGI supercomputer cool and moist

High performance access to file storage

Intel and SGI have built a new supercomputer using an advanced coolant from 3M flowing directly over the hardware to slash the running costs of such systems, and possibly to boost performance.

Don't try this with water

The SGI ICE X system uses Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors for grunt, and keeps them cool by passing 3M's Novec coolant directly over the chips. This gives almost unheard-of power density; Intel reckons it can pack up to 100 kilowatts of computing power per square meter using the new system.

"Modern data centers must increase the raw performance they deliver, but also do so efficiently by containing power consumption and operating costs," said Charles Wuishpard, general manager of workstation and HPC at Intel.

"Intel is continually innovating and improving microprocessor technologies to meet today's datacenter demands and is working with companies like 3M and SGI to explore advanced cooling technologies that improve energy efficiency in datacenters while also containing operating costs," Wuishpard says.

Taking out a bulky cooling system cuts the amount of space needed for a supercomputer by a factor of ten, says the company, and reduces the overall power consumption needed to maintain a healthy operating temperature by 95 per cent in comparison to air cooled systems.

Novec is a fluorinated liquid that 3M developed to be environmentally friendly but also highly effective at not damaging electronics or substances such as paper. It's used in fire control systems in some datacenters and also in the National Archive, home of the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

It's also an excellent heat exchanger, and is looped into a second stage cooling system that uses water to draw away the heat, which can be recycled, either to heat buildings or for industrial uses or power generation.

"We are thrilled with the work that our collaboration with SGI and Intel has produced," said Joe Koch, business director for 3M electronics markets materials Division. "These advancements are a significant stepping stone in accelerating industry wide collaboration to optimize computer hardware design."

Air Masters Brings Extended Money Saving Services to Area School

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) April 08, 2014

If building owners could save thousands of dollars by upgrading their existing power plants, would they do it? Air Masters significant modifications to the North County Christian Schools hot water plant have led to a highly-efficient, water-saving, and economical plumbing system.

Recently, Air Masters facilitated the replacement of North County Christian Schools antiquated 1960s boilers. Based on performance and past consumption, Air Masters found the preexisting, very large scotch marine style boilers, to be inefficient. After running numerous energy models, Air Masters determined the proper system set up for the North County Christian Schools hot water plant.

Air Masters new system at North County Christian Schools is approximately 1/6 the physical size of the old plant. Once completed, a Laclede Gas Rebate netted North County Christian School over $10,000.

Three high efficiency condensing class Camus boilers were installed and programmed by Air Masters knowledgeable and experienced staff. The controls lead lag to determine the output of each boiler based on system demand. This management is critical for effectiveness and efficiency.

The work did not end with installation. In order to further improve the operation of the plant, Air Masters converted the system from a primary pumping system to a primary secondary pumping system. The new system allows water to be pumped based on demand rather than continually. Clearly, this is more cost-effective as primary secondary pumps use less energy at partial load. The existing flue was utilized as a chase for the new PVC flues, and the schools comfort heating hot water boiler was replaced with a similar high efficiency condensing boiler.

Air Masters has helped North County Christian School as well as number of other businesses reduce expenses, become eco-friendly, and create an improved workplace environment.

Smart buildings: Tatung in endless pursuit of sustainable, eco-friendly management

Smart buildings: Tatung in endless pursuit of sustainable, eco-friendly management

Sponsored content [Wednesday 9 April 2014]

Depleting energy sources, climatic changes and rising power prices have highlighted the importance of energy savings and carbon reductions, and consequently, efforts have been made to optimize efficiency of energy use for buildings or factories. In line with the trend, the Tatung Group has been active in developing smart building/factory solutions to help users maintain an eco-friendly environment.

Given growing expectations for factories and buildings to optimize energy efficiency through better monitoring of their facilities, demand for smart building/factory solutions is on the rise.

Smart buildings/factories are crucial to corporation sustainable operations as well as overall environment. Pursuit of such goals will not seize until zero carbon emission is achieved, according to Liang Wen-jinn, general manager for SCADA Division under Tatung Co.

Tatung, as former construction company, now is approaching centennial. Over the years, tremendous energy has been devoted to develop smart home appliances, energy-saving industrial applications, high-efficiency motors, and high-grade safety cables. Also, Tatung possesses comprehensive deployments in the solar and LED sectors, and boasts strong experience in providing automation services as well as undertaking massive projects. Moreover, software development resources has grown and become one of Tatung's strength as well. Its recent projects for the luxury property market have also been well-received, attesting to Tatung's achievements in the smart building/factory sector. Enabled by a strong integration of group resources and technologies, Tatung offers comprehensive solutions.

The core of smart buildings/factories: The SCADA system

SCADA systems are crucial parts of smart building/factory solutions, Liang pointed out. Some users have equipped specific facilities with variable-frequency drives to save energy, but this is not sufficient because optimal energy-saving solutions rely on integrated energy consumption control based on data concerning power consumption of air conditioning, lighting, security control, etc., Liang explained. For example, control on valves of ventilation systems in addition to reducing load of air-conditioning chillers can enhance efficiency of energy use.

Tatung has provided central monitoring services for state-run Taiwan Power Company, China Steel, water companies, food manufacturers, automakers, universities, colleges and public facilities for nearly 20 years. However, such previous services focused on maintaining regular operation and monitoring abnormal conditions. But Tatung has now integrated such monitoring services with smart energy-saving innovations to form smart SCADA systems.

Studio Z Dental in Louisville, CO, Pursues Prestigious Eco Dentistry Certification with Earth Day in Mind

Louisville, CO (PRWEB) April 09, 2014

Studio Z Dental, a family-friendly general dental practice led by Dr. Tom Zyvoloski in Louisville, CO, is currently in the process of obtaining their Eco-Dentistry Certification, which will make Studio Z Dental the only general dental practice along the entire Front Range with an Eco-Dentistry membership and certification.

Integrating eco-friendly practices for the safety of both the Studio Z Dental team members and clients has long been a core element to Studio Z Dentals daily dentistry practice. For example, the Studio Z Dental office offers mercury-free dentistry, alongside some of the most up-to-date equipment such as the Swiss IQ Air purification system for mercury-safe silver amalgam filling removal. Studio Z Dental is considered mercury-safe (rather than just mercury-free), which means they follow the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicologys (IAOMT) protocols to keep clients from being exposed to high levels of mercury that are released during the silver amalgam filling removal process. This is just one element of their holistic dentistry philosophy intended to keep clients as healthy as they can be.

For Studio Z Dental, becoming an eco-friendly dentistry office under the Eco-Dentistry Certification means incorporating even more eco-friendly practices to form a prevention and conservation stance. Specifically, the GreenDOCTM Dental Office Certification Program by the Eco-Dentistry Association (EDA) helps dentistry offices implement such eco-friendly initiatives within their location and community contributions, alongside their daily practices.

At Studio Z Dental we are continually looking at how we can treat our patients in the healthiest manner, said Dr. Tom Zyvoloski of Studio Z Dental in Louisville, CO. So when we moved our dental office last year to our new location; it was an easy choice to look at every material that was used in the construction process, to make sure it was the most eco-friendly and patient-friendly material we could find.

Eco-Dentistry Certified offices are required to complete a long list of changes from traditional dentistry practices to eco-friendly dentistry practices. This list includes not only patient practices, such as being mercury-free and non-toxic cleaning and sterilization techniques for equipment, but also building codes following LEED guidelines, going paperless in the office, and implementing sustainable energy practices and a recycling program, among other requirements.

The Eco-Dentistry Certification is different from other green business practices certifications, such as the local Boulder County program named PACE, which stands for Partners for a Clean Environment. While both certifications aim to help businesses reduce costs while integrating sustainable green practices to benefit themselves and their community, the Eco-Dentistry Certification goes several steps further as Jessica Gallagher from the Eco Dentistry Association explains:

The GreenDOCTM Dental Office Certification Program was developed exclusively for EDA certifications as it was recognized that third party certifications are quite valued and provide a template for our members. With 180 initiatives over 8 separate categories, the Eco-Dentistry Certification encompasses all third party green verifications (such as for a green office, community leadership, etc.) and is specific to dental offices, not medical offices, veterinarian offices, restaurants, or anything else. This certification is the gold standard for dental offices.

With Earth Day in mind, Studio Z Dental will be the ONLY general dentist on the entire Front Range who is an Eco-Dentistry member and have an Eco-Dentistry Certification, and ultimately will be completing their PACE Certification as well.

Studio Z Dental in Louisville, Colorado is one of the few dentist offices in the Boulder area offering mercury safe holistic dentistry, family dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry, including teeth whitening. Studio Z Dental is located at 818 W South Boulder Rd, Suite 100, Louisville, CO 80027 and can be contacted at (303) 802-4313 or online at http://www.studiozdental.com/.

Burma's Inle Lake under threat from rapid tourist development

Noisy tourist longboats clog the narrow canals through stilt villages and floating gardens, and there are growing problems with rubbish disposal and water pollution.

"Small children leg-row little skiffs which are easily upset by tourist boats, everyone gets stared at and can't get around easily from their homes to their floating vegetable gardens. It all has the makings of a social and environmental disaster."

William Bleisch, a program director and researcher for the China Exploration and Research Society, described such alpine lakes in Southeast Asia as the Galpagos of Asia.

He told National Geographic that in three years of research however, he has found only 9 of the 17 endemic and range-restricted species historically reported in Inle Lake.

"We're still hopeful for the others, but some of them may be gone already, and others seem to be much rarer than they were in the past," he said, adding that it is also difficult now to find a pure specimen of the once prevalent endemic Inle carp.

Paul Craven, a travel consultant for Burma at Steppes Travel who knows the Inle area well, said: The villages of the lake do benefit from tourism, through employment and people buying things, but there is pollution from these boats and the lake is very shallow."

New hotels are being concentrated on the shore edge at Nyaungshwe, a former fishing village but now the lakes tourism hub. The plaster is hardly dry before they are opened to tourists, Mr Craven said.

He thinks part of the solution would be to spread tourism around.

Inle Lake is a jewel but there are other places in the country that, in different ways, are equally attractive, he said. But tourism is still very new and these areas dont have the facilities yet and the road infrastructure is bad.

I am being told by ground agents that the new buildings are far enough away from the shoreline and from each other, but only time will tell whether the development will be sustainable," he added.
