Indian Bay Ecosystem Corporation (IBEC) | We are a non …

The Indian Bay Ecosystem Corporation is a non-profit community organization with the goal of protecting the Indian Bay watershed through research, community engagement, and sound stewardship.

The Indian Bay Watershed covers an area of approximately 700 square kilometers and is comprised of 14 large ponds and a number of smaller ponds. A network of old logging roads offer access to several ponds, while others are accessible by the use of an ATV or pick-up truck in the summer and snowmobile in the winter.

Historically, the Indian Bay area was known in fishing circles for its large native brook trout. In the 1970s and 80s easier access, increased fishing pressure, poor conservation ethic and lack of management led to declines in bothbrook trout populations and size, along withthe deterioration of the watershed.Growing concern for the watershed ledagroup of concerned citizens to take action.Since its formation in 1988 by the Gambo-Indian Bay Development Association, the Indian Bay EcosystemCorporation, hasmade many inroadsinrestoring the watershed back to its former pristine condition.

IBECs accomplishments include a major clean-up ofall waterways within theIndian Bay Watershed, increased public awareness, habitat restoration, andmanagement changes to the brook trout fishery. In addition, IBEC has partnered with various academic institutions and government agencies to compile a comprehensive database of habitat, life history, and fisheries-related information through research efforts conducted in the watershed.

Jianfang Jin Presents 5 Novel Eco-Social Theories in New Book

Aracadia, Calif. (PRWEB) January 26, 2015

Within The General Theory of Eco-Social Science: The Theory and Road Map for Comprehensive Reform (published by AuthorHouse), the new book from author Jianfang Jin, social science is reconstructed from an ecological perspective. Jin introduces five completely new theories in the fields of sociology, philosophy, economics, political science and monetary policy. This book not only illustrates future human society but also guides people in current social transition.

The five new theories presented within include eco-entity, eco-resources, ecological society, eco-economics and eco-currency. Eco-entity is described as a new system of ecological theory integrating social and natural sciences, while eco-resources advances the concept of ecological resources, expanding their application to the social relations of human beings. Jin delves further from here, bringing out the ideas of the social eco-entity, economic eco-entity and eco-currency. He thus portrays a complete picture of eco-society and demonstrates the strong appeal of future ecological civilization. Ecological society is described by Jin as the rule of organicism, eco-economics suggests a new economic growth cycle and eco-currency develops three new functions and attributes of currency, while introducing a new eco-monetary policy.

The General Theory of Eco-Social Science is a highly informative and in-depth study that is eye-opening and comprehensive, Jin says. It serves as a guiding tool that reveals how these five new theories play a pivotal role in improving the current situation society is facing.

Eco-friendly retreats in Costa Rica

Tourists come to Costa Rica for three reasons: the great beaches, the magnificent rainforests and the nationss dedication to eco-tourism. Hotel Belmar opened in 1985, and was one of the first eco-friendly hotels in Costa Rica. Here you can enjoy luxury accommodation without harming the local environment.

On a clear day, you can see over the cloud forest all the way to the Pacific Ocean from this Swiss-chalet-style hotel, says Sarah Gilbert in The Guardian. The hotel has been committed to environmental and social responsibility for 30 years. It runs reforestation programmes, and has helped to create a biodigester that cleans waste water.

Its eco-friendly nature means it does not recommend four-wheel-drive tours, but nearby private reserve Curi Cancha is made for walking. You can take the trail behind the hotel up Cerro Amigos, the highest point of Monteverde, before a dip in the al fresco hot tub and a dinner of gourmet local produce.

The restaurant, Celajes, serves up Costa Rican dishes using produce grown at the hotel.

Doubles cost from 75, including breakfast.Visit hotelbelmar.net, or call 00 1 506 2645 5201.

Most accommodation in Costa Rica once consisted of either wooden lodges (like the Belmar, see left), or giant American tourist complexes but Kur has helped to change that. These six cleverly designed open-plan villas, with views of the ocean on the horizon, have brought a real touch of style to the countrys tourist accommodation.

Kur has admirable eco-credentials the pool is salt-water and chemical-free, energy comes from solar panels and rainwater is recycled, says Hazel Lubbock in Cond Nast Traveller. Each villa is glass-fronted and surrounded by greenery and equipped with an iPad, loaded with books and music. The communal areas have a Miami beach-bar vibe, with an open-air lounge, infinity pool (with underwater sound system), large sun loungers and a rooftop to chill out on. There is also a small spa.

The open-plan Sky Lounge has 360-degree views of Costa Rican jungle and ocean, and is the best place to spot passing humpback whales, says MrandMrsSmith.com.The fish-packed menu includes a daily carpaccio.

China's Leshi Eyes Connected Electric Car

A Chinese billionaire is following global technology firms in eyeing the connected car market.

Billionaire Jia Yueting is kick-starting his electric-car ambition by releasing in Beijing today LeOS, a new in-car operating system with gesture- and voice-control features that would connect his companys forthcoming model with its smartphones and TV sets. Users will be allowed to remotely control their cars, stream contents from Leshis video site and ultimately achieve unmanned driving, Leshi says in a statement.

Jia, the 42-year-old chairman and founder of Leshi Internet Information & Technology Co., announced in December that the maker of Internet televisions and set-top video boxes spent the past year developing electric cars under a project called Super Electric Eco-system. Jia, who this year ranks No.78 on the China Rich List with a net worth of $ 1.9 billion, has said that he was confident Leshis cars would beat Tesla.

The [SEE] projects first stage result lies in the self-developed electric car operation system LeOS for Auto, the company says.

Global technology companies are racing to develop automobile appliances and gadgets that can be connected to the Internet. Google is reportedly planning to build Android M, the next version of its Android operating system, directly into automobiles. Apple in March launched its iOS-powered car operating system called CarPlay.

Shares of Leshi rose 3.73% to 52.59 yuan in Shen Zhen trading as of 5: 33 p.m. local time.

Leshis electric-car push also comes as the government in Beijing is encouraging more participation in new-energy vehicles to forge Chinas own electric-car brand and reduce air pollution. Authorities propose to grant more manufacturing licenses to companies other than car makers, but applicants should have more than three years of experience in product research and development.

He Yi, chief executive officer of Leshi Internet of Vehicles, said in Beijing today license application is going very smoothly.

Developmental Technologies, LLC Sues DuPont and Valmont over Alleged Use of Secrets Behind New Eco-Ag Water …

Bradenton, FL (PRWEB) January 15, 2015

To protect its unique patented Eco-Ag irrigation system, Florida-based Developmental Technologies, LLC(DTL) has announced it has brought suit against two industry giants, DuPont Co. and Valmont Industries, Inc. The case is Developmental Technologies LLC v. Valmont Industries Inc. et al., case number 8:14-cv-02796 in the District Court for the Middle District of Florida.

DTL is represented by Woodrow H. Pollack and Michael J. Collitz III of GrayRobinson PA. According to court documents, after developing its plant-responsive irrigation system, DTL discussed it with DuPont Co. and Valmont Industries, Inc. during a number of meetings held in DTLs offices in Bradenton, Florida. The meetings occurred in 2009/2010, and the information shared included some of DTLs proprietary approaches to irrigation products and methods. Court documents allege that DuPont and Valmont aborted the plant-responsive irrigation system deal under works with DTL and then both companies allegedly used trade secrets learned from DTL to create their own new product.

DTL owns a number of patents relating to processes for a unique new low-pressure water conservation irrigation system. According to the suit, Eco-Ag uses tubes that react to material exuded by plants, enabling the system to deliver water and nutrients only when the plants need it. The system reportedly uses a fraction of the amount of water used in typical drip irrigation and can potentially revolutionize the agricultural and landscaping industries around the world.

This simple system is based on a chemical interaction between plants roots and the irrigation tube, which releases water and/or fertilizer to the roots only when needed. No electronics or pumps are required, maintenance is much lower, and yields are much higher than with any other systems.

Our research has shown a 22% higher yield of crops using Eco-Ag, notes Michael Gould, one of DTLs owners. With water resources diminishing around the world, and in our own country as well, this is an extremely energy efficient alternative to current irrigation practices. It works on both large-scale commercial farms as well as small-scale hobby gardens and its effective on any plant or tree, including vegetables, fruit trees, berries, sod, yard landscaping, grains, corn, and fuel system plants.

Jan Gould adds, The cost is the same as installing any drip irrigation system under the surface of the soil. Theres no new equipment needed. And its especially effective in really dry areas because it uses much less water. With statistics showing that California, Arizona and our Midwest bread basket states are all at risk of another dust bowl, theres no time to waste in implementing this simple, yet life-saving technology.

About Developmental Technologies, LLC

Developmental Technologies, LLC is a privately held research and development company based in Bradenton, Florida. Its mission is to create innovative solutions to real-world problems through the use of technology, science, research, development and sound business practices. Its most recent project, Eco-Ag irrigation systems was designed to deliver water and nutrients to plant life using new processes developed by DTL. In testing, ECO-AG reduces water usage and fertilizer requirements by responding directly to the needs of the plant while maintaining or exceeding normal yields.

Researchers Testing "Eco-Vapour" Toilet System in India

Washington: A new "eco-vapour" toilet system being tested in India uses a breathable fabric that traps human waste and allows only water vapour molecules to escape, rendering sewage less hospitable to bacteria and other disease-causing organisms.

A team of researchers led by Steven K Dentel, Professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Delaware in the US, has been working for several years on a breathable fabric that can be used to line pit toilets and other basic sanitary facilities in developing nations.

The fabric Professor Dentel and his team are developing is similar to that used in sports jackets and raincoats; it only allows tiny water vapour molecules through.

Professor Dentel said this could be a valuable way to filter out liquid water from human waste, letting the pure water escape while retaining everything else.

Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, researchers have been working on the project for some time now.

On December 28, a small group led by doctoral student Shray Saxena headed to India to begin the first field test of the new fabric.

"A lot of people in India right now don't have improved toilet systems. Even in cities like Kanpur (UP), which are really quite developed, people do not have these facilities available to them," Shrey said.

Families in two cities, Kanpur and Puri in Odisha, are trying out the new "eco-vapour" toilet system, with sewage collected in 55-gallon drums lined with the breathable fabric, allowing water vapour to evaporate.

The researchers are observing how the fabric performs under varying conditions of heat and humidity, which affect the rate at which water diffuses through the membrane.

If external humidity is high, the lined drums may fill up before enough of the water can evaporate.

Real-Time PCR System can complete 40 cycles in 15 min.

Staffordshire, UK: PCRmax, a Bibby Scientific company, has launched the Eco 48 real time PCR system. This high specification, economically priced real time thermal cycler provides users with premium quality alongside unprecedented speed. The optimised instrument is capable of running 40 cycles in 15 minutes while still using standard chemistries and plastics. In a typical run, the instrument can still complete 40 cycles in 40 minutes compared to 2 hours with competitive systems.

In addition to this exceptional efficiency, the Eco 48 has the most uniform block of any thermal cycler (0.1C recorded at 95 C with no settle time). This is thanks to the patented silver and gold hollow thermal block filled with a thermally conductive fluid, which ensures the same measurement is delivered for every well during every run in every instrument. Furthermore, ALC (adaptive LED control) means there is no uncertainty over whether unknowns maximize the wide dynamic range, are bleaching through light to neighbouring wells or have saturated the detector, which can plague other systems. The Eco 48 is capable of identifying Class IV SNPs in more than 99.9% of cases.

In order to make adoption of the instrument as simple as possible, the free and open licence Eco 48 software provides cutting edge and powerful instrument control, data collection, and data analysis. Stephen Bustin, Professor of Allied Health and Medicine at Anglia Ruskin University and world renowned expert in real-time PCR, said, I have used the Eco system for a year and it is very good (and) fast. An urbanist's guide to Stockholm: Find your own secret space and own it'

Lola on the island of Skeppsholmen with Gamla stan (another island and Stockholms old town) in the background

My name is Lola Akinmade kerstrm. I was born in Nigeria, studied and worked in the United States, and moved to Stockholm for love many moons ago after giving up my life as a system architect working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). That was in 2009. Coming from two boisterous cultures Nigerian and American Sweden as a whole was an initial shock to the system. Life slowed down tremendously and the words work-life balance slowly crept into my psyche.

Today, Im a freelance travel writer and photographer who contributes to many major publications. My photography is represented by National Geographic Creative and Im also the editor-in-chief of Slow Travel Stockholm a site that encourages travellers to my city to slow down, re-examine their motives for visiting, and get to know the city on a much deeper level. Yes, Stockholm truly is that superhot person who is also a modest rocket scientist. Getting beneath its surface is challenging but rewarding.

Spread out across 14 islands with tons of nooks and crannies (read: hole-in-the-wall cafs) for hiding out - from historic Gamla stan and lush Djurgrden to vibrant Sdermalm Stockholm today feels more like the Silicon Valley of Scandinavia pushing out tonnes of wildly successful startups (Spotify and Skype anyone?) and popular video games (Minecraft).

Beyond panoramic good looks, Stockholm is arguably the greenest city amidst a sea of eco-friendly Nordic cities. In 2010, it beat out 34 European cities to win the inaugural European Green Capital award because of various sustainability initiatives - from purifying rain water to converting waste into biogas for its public transportation system.

Recycling is in our DNA. You will pay for that plastic grocery bag and yes, that low-flush energy-conserving toilet is still powerful enough to get rid of it so no need to watch.

Ive always associated human characteristics with cities I explore. Edinburgh feels like a moody yet brilliant gentleman. Belfast is a brawny rugby player you try to force into a business suit, and my city, Stockholm, feels androgynous. Very jean jacket, flipped collar and white pants. Stockholm wants you to find your own secret space and own it selfishly.

It is the most open society run by the most private people.

Buildings in Stockholm are all shades of ochre yellow and brown ochre buildings, pale lemon, dull pumpkin orange, mustard yellow, and blush red with the occasional grey futuristic-style buildings and 1960s block-style buildings with weird colour choices and white trims thrown in.

In my opinion, the best building in town is a toss-up between the gargantuan National Museum building which was built in 1866 and which is currently closed for renovations until 2017; and Stadshuset (City Hall) with its impressive series of archways and tower. The City Hall building was opened in 1923 and it hosts the Nobel Prize dinner and gala every year.
