Have you ever had trouble concentrating in the office as people walk by and glance at you? Do you come off as unfriendly or aloof, when you're really just focusing on your work?
Dr. Hirotaka Osawa from Tsukuba University, in Japan, has developed a new wearable device to help us with something called "emotional labor." His idea is that people could adopt cyborg technology to increase the emotional comfort of those around us. In this case, the device is a crazy pair of glasses that display eyeballs on their lenses.
The device's virtual eyes naturally follow people and movement, making itappearas though you're friendly and approachable, even if you're too busy doing something else or too tired to actuallylookfriendly and approachable.
"This emotional support reduces a user's cognitive load for social manners," Osawa says.
Check out his whimsical video below, which won the Best Video award at the 2014 ACM/IEEE Human-Robot Interaction Conference last month:
The device, which Osawa calls AgencyGlass, has several different functions: when you tilt your head back, the animated eyes look upwards to make it look like you're thinking. If you nod or shake your head, the glasses blink. All of this is performed with a gyroscope and accelerometer to detect head movement, and an external camera to detect faces and motion.
Osawa says his idea was recently challenged at a conference in Japan: "Isn't it wrong to deceive the people around you?" he was asked. Osawa argued that those around you know youre wearing the glasses, minimizing any deception.
He also cites sociologist A.R. Hochschild, whose book describes the occupations that require "emotional labor," a veneer of politeness that is necessary for a job, but can be stressful and detrimental to the workers mental health. As the book summarizes:
"Just as we have seldom recognized or understood emotional labor, we have not appreciated its cost to those who do it for a living. Like a physical laborer who becomes estranged from what he or she makes, an emotional laborer, such as a flight attendant, can become estranged not only from her own expressions of feeling (her smile is not her smile), but also from what she actually feels (her managed friendliness). This estrangement, though a valuable defense against stress, is also an important occupational hazard, because it is through our feelings that we are connected with those around us."

While many fans and analysts believe a loss against undefeated fight veteran Jorina Baars in a Muay Thai bout late last month has derailed her hopes of a superfight with Ronda Rousey, Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino believes otherwise.
The current Invicta FC women's featherweight champion still has her UFC bantamweight counterpart in her crosshairs, as she told AXS TV'sInside MMA(transcription per MixedMartialArts.com).
"Ronda, she did an interview and she said '145 for Gina,' you know," said Justino. "Only for Gina, not for me She run from me, you know. And I think she's a fake fighter. Because when you're a true fighter, you fight everyone...Ronda at 145. It's perfect."
In a media scrum just under a month ago, perMMAJunkie.com, the "Rowdy" UFC champion stated that the only opponent she would move up to featherweight for is Gina Carano.
Rumors have been swirling in recent weeks over a possible Rousey vs. Carano showdown this summer, and while that remains to be seen, Carano said she is planning to meetwith UFC president Dana Whitethis week in an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show.
Justino has not competed in an MMA fight since July, when she captured the vacant Invicta FC women's 145-pound championship in a rematch with Marloes Coenen, finishing the fight with strikes in the fourth round.
The musclebound brawler has scored back-to-back TKO victories under the Invicta FC banner since testing positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol shortly after a December 2011 win over Hiroko Yamanaka.
Meanwhile, Rousey improved her undefeated MMA record to 9-0 after she scored a quick Round 1 TKO over fellow former Olympic medalist Sara McMann at UFC 170 in February.
The matchup marked the first time Rousey won a fight by something other than her patented armbar.
Rousey does not have her next bout booked yet, though Carano and top contender Cat Zingano are two strong possibilities outside of Cyborg.

With Ronda Rousey tearing through UFC competitors left and right, it has left the UFC and MMA pundits scrambling for suitable contenders. It was only a matter of time before other WMMA stars would be brought into the mix. Cue Gina Carano, Cris Cyborg, and Holly Holm, who have all been deemed as possible contenders to the Womens Bantamweight champion.
The issue is that none of the aforementioned women are on the UFC roster, among other things. The fight that most fans want to see is a matchup with former StrikeForce and current Invicta Featherweight champion, Cris Cyborg.
Cyborg is a Featherweight, who has previously stated she would die if she cut down to 135. When Dana White and the UFC heard that statement, it was cut and dry that they would not sign her. White has said that Cyborg would need to cut to 135 a few times before giving her a shot at Ronda Rousey. Cyborg, in response to White, said she is looking to cut to 135 by September.
In a recent interview with MMAJunkie, Dana White explained that there is currently nothing on the table for Cyborg:
The crazy thing about talking about this is there is no negotiations or anything like that. Shes a 145-pounder.
Dana White continued, stating the other issues besides Cyborgs weight:
Shes being mismanaged. Shes been mismanaged since the day that this whole thing went down, and she will continue to be mismanaged right until her career is over.
Cyborg seems to be a long shot to fight Rousey anytime soon. Dana White has made it clear that until Cyborg is ready to fight on the UFCs terms, she will not get a crack at Rousey and the UFC title.

The Holly Holm hype train is back in Albuquerque, N.M., Friday night, with the stakes perhaps higher than ever.
Holm will face Juliana Werner for the Legacy FC bantamweight title just weeks after her management team met with the UFC for the first time last month. According to UFC president Dana White, that meeting didn't go well, and he is no longer interested in her services. However, the general consensus is that the idea will be revisited after Friday night's fight, especially if Holm wins.
Mike Winkeljohn, Holm's trainer of 16 years, said the plan was to have Cris Cyborg, another high-profile free agent, attend Friday night's fight, however, those plans changed following Cyborg's Muay Thai loss last week. He added that there have been preliminary talks to stage a Holm vs. Cyborg pay-per-view fight in the near future, should the UFC deal not come to fruition.
"Why do you think people tune in to boxing?" Winkeljohn said when asked if a Holm vs. Cyborg stand-alone pay-per-view could be successful. "Names. Not because Bob Arum or Don King was throwing a fight, it was all because [Mike] Tyson was fighting."
A source close to Cyborg's camp, for whatever it's worth, denied any talks of a pay-per-view fight against Holm.
Winkeljohn said it was his understanding that the UFC's initial offer was $15,000 to show and $15,000 to win. Team Holm was willing to accept that offer, however, they wanted a raise if she earned a title shot.
"We have no problem with fighting for the money they've offered us for the first couple of fights in the UFC," he said. "We just want good money to fight Ronda [Rousey] or whoever has the title at that point."
Winkeljohn said he expects Holm's manager Lenny Fresquez to engage in talks with the UFC after Friday night's fight with "a different spin."
"I think they don't want to hurt the other girls' feelings and let the world know that money has been negotiated in such a way," Winkeljohn said. "I don't blame them. They are who they are because they make all the right decisions. There are other things we can ask for. She's got such good marketability, I think she would be a good broadcaster. Hey, can you help us get to FOX to be a broadcaster? Can you help us do these things?
"There are other things we can do to make money. There are other sources for her other than a dumb little paycheck. So we might have to look at it that way."

Coach: Holly Holm vs. Cris Cyborg pay-per-view fight being considered
A huge women's fight is in talks, and it does not involve UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey at all.
According to MMAFighting's Ariel Helwani, a showdown between two feared strikers in Holly Holm and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos is being discussed by Holm's camp.
Holm's coach, Mike Winklejohn, told MMAfighting that preliminary negotiations have begun for a Holm vs. Cyborg pay-per-view fight if their camp cannot come to terms with the UFC.
Holm's management recently met with UFC President Dana White, and the UFC executive reportedly expressed no interest in signing the standout female fighter. If the two sides cannot negotiate a deal which satisfies both sides, Holm vs. Cyborg may occur outside of the UFC's legendary Octagon.
Winklejohn said that this matchup does not have to take place on the MMA's biggest stage to succeed. The name value alone would plant butts in seats and sell tickets.
"Why do you think people tune in to boxing?" Winklejohn said. "Names. Not because Bob Arum or Don King was throwing a fight; it was all because [Mike] Tyson was fighting."
Winklejohn appears to be dead on in that sentiment, as Holm vs. Cyborg is unquestionably the biggest "striker vs. striker" matchup possible given the current landscape of female fighting.
Cyborg recently lost a professional Muay Thai bout to Jorina Baars at Glory 14, but the Brazilian powerhouse showcased a ton of heart and resolve against a superior opponent, capturing fans' fascination in the process.
Holm, on the other hand, will fightJuliana Werner at Legacy FC 30 April 4 for the promotion's bantamweight title.
Holm is undefeated in professional mixed martial arts action and is an 18-time world champion boxer in three different weight classes, boasting a 33-2-3 overall record inside the ring.
